South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium
Reports of the Rabbitohs death (by me mostly) have been exaggerated, given their successive victories without Greg Inglis and their reasonably lofty position on the ladder. Wins are wins and they're all worth two points, but I'm not convinced that victories over teams I expect to struggle this year (Sea Eagles and Knights) is strong enough form to beat the undefeated Chooks. That said, they'll lift for what has to be the longest running derby in Australian sport. I went looking for an older rivalry globally – Yankees vs Red Sox (since 1901) sprang to mind. I imagine there are country cricket teams in England that can match it too but I simply don't care enough to look it up. I'll be looking up this game though – live on the lounge if anyone wants to join me. George Burgess and Hymel Hunt are spending some time off the field for some ugly discretions on the field, while Blake Ferguson is some chance to return. I'll be sticken with the chickens who have, in my opinion, been defeating tougher opposition than the bunnies. Closer than some may think, but the Chooks will prevail. Here I go with the rudest animal call in the world...cock-a-doodle-do
Verdict – Roosters by 4
Result – Roosters 20 defeated Rabbitohs 6
Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights – Friday afternoon – Pepper Stadium
When I saw that the Panthers were $1.18 to win this game my first thought was 'whoa Nelly! The only reason you'd be backing the Panthers at $1.18 is if you were some Russian criminal trying to get money out of Moscow before some KGB operative takes you out on the way to the airport'. Then I stopped working on my terrible screenplay and started thinking about this game a little more seriously. And guess what? The Panthers are deadset specials and $1.18 is giving money away. One from three is not where the Panthers should be and they'll be proving that this weekend. Bravo to the Knights for their efforts this season – clearly they are putting in and improving, but that only gets you so far. The skill gap between these sides is too large to ignore, and unless the Panthers playing group want to get rid of their coach they'll be winning this in a canter. Lock of the week...gamble responsibly.
Verdict – Panthers by 38
Result – Panthers 40 defeated Knights 0
Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
If the Bunnies and the Chooks hadn't been tackling each other for 120 years this would be the game of the round. The Broncos may have lost their last two games but there is no denying the quality of their effort. The Raiders were close to awful in their big loss to the Sharks, but were very good indeed in rounds one and three. Their golden point loss to the Cowboys in Townsville should hold up here, given that the Broncos lost to the Cowboys in golden point in Brisbane. I flagged Junior Paulo as the player to watch at the Raiders this year and it's nice to know I got one thing right. He is near enough to unstoppable and I'm so old he reminds me of big Sam Backo – potentially the prop forward of the year. Despite all my Paulo love I'm tipping the Broncos – they'll be a much more resilient opponent than what the Raiders faced in round three and I still have this lukewarm theory that the Raiders are a better team during the day. Looks like a belter of a game...unmissable.
Verdict – Broncos by 4
Result – Broncos 13 defeated Raiders 12
Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Lottoland
I suppose the Sea Eagles will take some confidence away from that (somewhat) surprising win over the Cowboys last weekend (I almost tipped them dagnabbit). They will face a sterner test in the middle against the Bulldogs and I expect the visitors to dominate on that front (although the return of Martin Taupau does even up that forwards battle a little). One of the Morris brothers (Brett...probably) racks up NRL game number 200 on Saturday afternoon and both brothers will be keen to celebrate the milestone with a win. The hopeless romantic in me suggests backing Brett Morris to score a try at any time during this game at $1.91. Back the Bulldogs too. They may have lost two from three but both losses were narrow and the two teams that beat them are the only undefeated teams in the competition.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 8
Result – Sea Eagles 36 defeated Bulldogs 0
Parramatta Eels vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium
The Eels jumped out of the gates against the Titans and all appeared to be going to plan...until it wasn't. Suddenly, as if by magic, they went cold, and the Titans triumphed. Clearly they missed Corey Norman, and I expect his return will see the Eels reclaim their earlier form. The Sharks aren't likely to submit to anyone easily, but I feel like they've come down quite a few notches from where they were at the tail end of last season. Note that Valentine Holmes returns on the wing, and Jack Bird retains the fullback role for now.
Verdict – Eels by 2
Result – Sharks 20 defeated Eels 6
Gold Coast Titans vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium
The Cowboys never looked like winning last weekend, but I'm tipping they'll bounce back here. I expect their forwards to respond in the only way forwards can. Any sort of platform for Thurston and Morgan and I think they'll expose those new combinations and the youngsters in that Titans backline. Given what happened against Manly you couldn't possibly tip the Cowboys with confidence, but I'm certainly tipping them..
Verdict – Cowboys by 10
Result – Cowboys 32 defeated Titans 26
Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval
When I was younger so much younger than today, I was in a relationship with this girl. At the beginning it was all pretty exciting and fun. Then, after about 18 months, I started to get a feeling that she wasn't really making an effort for me anymore. She started farting on the couch and leaving the toilet seat up and coming up with ludicrous excuses not to do things we used to enjoy doing. I knew it was over before it was over. As Jason Taylor watched his stripey cats turnstiling their way around GIO Stadium last Sunday afternoon, he knew it was over too. He wouldn't have known it would come so quickly, but he would have known it was coming. Stay strong JT...we've all been there. There are any number of examples where teams have put it all together in their first performance after the coach is sacked, and that's just sticking the knife in surely. I don't think JT would want the boys to lose at Leichhardt this Sunday, but he wouldn't want them winning well either. Don't worry JT...it isn't going to happen.
Verdict – Storm by 8
Result – Storm 22 defeated Tigers 14
St George Illawarra Dragons vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – UOW Jubilee Oval
There are a couple of important inclusions in the Warriors list this weekend. One is Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who will almost certainly play. The other is Kieran Foran who almost certainly won't. Regardless I cannot possibly tip the Warriors, particularly over here, against a pack of forwards who will actually put in. If the Sharks couldn't get through the Red V last week the Warriors pack have Buckleys. The bookies can't split these two, but I can. Dragons...specials.
Verdict – Dragons by 10
Result – Dragons 26 defeated Warriors 12

Been a tough couple of rounds fellas, but it is just the beginning. I'm not overly active here but I am here nontheless...stalking you all...im just not much of an active forum person.
I almost cried when my boys lost Matt Scott last week and the weekend game against the sea turkeys revealed how much that hurt. Hopefully the get their rhythm back.
Women spend more time thinking about what men are thinking than what men actually think.....
just something to think about! hahhahaa :)

Nice stat today Daily Telegraph, (or did you plagarise from SmileyGuy in turn who copied the Courier Mail)?
Anyway, seems its been 45 years since all teams had a win on the board after 3 rounds. Probably much more of a strange one this year, as there are 16 teams to get off the mark, and was only 12 teams in the comp back then.
I'm still holding to my theory that the top 4 after 5 rounds usually make the semis, and the bottom 4 after 5 rounds usually miss out. Will be interesting to see the table in 2 more weeks.

Hi Guys
Yeah tips are in. So good luck to you all.
Coach our teams are 1 and 2. Not much difference between the scoring.
The Broncs maybe a little better than your Panthers.
Don't care too much about the other teams so lets make this a Broncs v Panthers little comp.
You don't like me and I don't like you. So lets let our teams decide who wins.
If the Panthers outdo the Broncs I will send you a present and I would assume you would do the same.
Nothing expensive...just a token of our win.
What say you.

They only play once and its at Suncorp.
It's a completely unfair bet.
To you that is.
Broncos have zero chance.

Looks like people can't currently comment on the Couch side of the Loungeroom.
Are you able to take pick the lock on that one?

No worries. Thanks.

I don't think the 52 comments there are likely to be read again.

Dragons hierarchy,
UOW.
Obviously - or not so obviously - stands for University of Wollongong, but how does "of" get to be part of the acronym?
No other University in the world includes a letter for "of".
Quite a paradox wouldn't you say, given the connection with higher education.

I see Sandow has signed with the Norths Devils.
A Brisbane club involved in the Queensland Cup, and feeder club to Qld's fourth team, the Melbourne Storm.
If he makes it back to 1st grade, Storm could be on the slide for the first time in history.

Is father and son directly connected with different NRL teams a conflict of interest? I'm struggling a little to see how not.
Intellectual property, or in layman's terms, "stuff a team knows that other team's don't" surely has an opportunity to be breached.
Is Cleary, Ivan still coaching his son in lots of ways?
Is a coach of one club morally able to also coach a player from another club?
Joey Johns did, you may say, but I would counter, not with any morals in place,

The Coach's Low Down - (I mean, way ..... down)
**************************************
Rabbitohs - Hard to split on current form. Came down to Sutton being named at 6 who can often be a handful, at the very least attracting the extra defender. Johnston back to his preferred wing, and replaced by a more skilful Cody Walker (and who's State of Origin eligibility remains very unclear. More enquiries may follow the game)
Panthers - I still have severe doubts about Panthers not using Cartwright as their main attacking weapon. Without that they don't have the same aura they had last year, and opposing teams sense that.
So I wouldn't be surprised if they fall again, I mean they lose so many games they are favoured to win, but happy for this to be a true tipping comp tip.
Raiders - Broncos will struggle to manage the Raiders forwards and the different attacking style that they are coached to defend, especially Rapana. Broncos have their attacking options too, but will be under pressure if old Chicken Thaiday and CornCob Sims can't make the hard yards.
Bulldogs - Forward battle is David and Goliath stuff. Manly, you are David in case you were wondering. Sure, David came out on top in that scuffle so they say, but that wasn't a rugby league game. Will take more than a bloody slingshot to stop the Dogs here.
Sharks - Much more like the makeup of the team that won the comp, albeit they aren't getting Barba and Ennis back. Although rather than the Sharks attack, I think it's their defence that will be more of a test to the Eels. They've lost attacking options, and so will regress back to their grinding days of old here. Wet weather only adds weight. Parra's attack just won't be as good in heavy boots.
Titans - The Coast make plenty of mistakes on their day, but mistakes are guaranteed from the inexperienced Cowboy combos. No Taumololo , no Scott, no Coote, take #2.
Storm - They haven't been as impressive as their undefeated record suggests, but Tigers defensive flaws will be exposed again eg targeting Brooks and Naigama. (not the coaches fault)
Warriors - Finally leaving the cocoon that NZ soil has become in the last month may be a blessing. Expectation not as high, but plenty of wet ground underfoot will make them feel at home.

Bulldogs by 6 I think the Bulldogs are going to win back to back
Eels by 2 while we at it lets looks when Eels played the defreding premiers early in the last few season
2016 round 2 Eels 20 beat Cowboys 16

I guess on the upside they did break a 9 year / 11 game losing streak last year. At least that monkey's off the back.
Athough another monkey has jumped on after uncovering the last time they beat the V in Sydney. It coincides with the first time they beat the V in Sydney. That's because it's the same answer.
It only happened once, and it was back in 2003.
Monkeys sure are annoying little critters.

Hi everyone,
Good to see all teams have now won at least once. A few wins last week down to “upsets” in my tiny brain but others may not agree. Sorry Coach but I was stoked that my BBB managed to get over the top of your blokes on Saturday. I read briefly somewhere that the win was “controversial” but don’t know why. I think I’ll jump on the NRL website and have a look after I’m finished here just to see what all the hoopla was about, if any. OK, let’s get into it…
Roosters - The BBB have managed to impress me no end and I’m absolutely cock-a-hoop about that (yes, the pun was intended). Souths did win last week but are now missing Burgess, Hunt and Burns so I’m breathing a little easier about this one. Mind you, I’m not looking forward to seeing Big Sam busting my BBB about. It could get ugly. I have a lot of time for Big Sam but here’s hoping he’s under par Thursday night. I’d rather see Keary showing Souths just who they let go. Go You Mighty Roosters!
Panthers - I think the Panthers are the shortest priced favourites this weekend. And so they should be. Apparently the Panthers were a bit unlucky last week against my BBB. I’ll find out why when I go to the NRL website as mentioned above. Regardless, the Panthers are hard to beat at home and have a bit too much class compared to the Knights I reckon. Yes, the Knights have improved a lot since last year but methinks not enough for a Panthers side wanting to bounce back after last week. Panthers will win and possibly win well.
Broncos - This is gonna be a tough one to pick. The Broncos would have to be feeling a bit annoyed with the results of their last two. They played really well but unfortunately they met two classy outfits in the Cowboys and the Storm. How much will these 2 games have affected their mindset I wonder? Hey, these guys know what they’re doing so not really concerned. The Raiders were ruthless last week but you have to weigh up the fact that the Tigers didn’t offer much of a challenge on the day. I’m thinking that being at home and more than likely being desperate to get back on track should see the Broncos get up in this one.
Bulldogs - I’m not exactly sure what happened in the Manly vs Cowboys game last week. I’m still trying to figure it out. Manly were good defensively last week but can they do it again? If not, they’re gone. In hindsight, I should’ve tipped the Doggies last week but hey, that’s why I’m the “Newbie” eh? The Doggies were good against my BBB in Week 2 and franked that performance with their win last week. I think I’ll go with my “gut” this week and pick the Doggies.
Sharks - Very disappointed with Baggy’s BOYS last week (sorry mate). What the hell happened in that one? I read that Corey Norman returns this week which should help the Eels. Just can’t seem to work out the Sharkies so far this year but I’m feeling they might have an edge in class here. They will want to bounce back this week as well so I’ll take a punt and tip them here.
Titans - What the Titans did last week was very impressive. I actually watched the game on TV and couldn’t believe what I saw. They started the game with players already MIA and then had some more injured in the first half and that had Newbie thinking they were all but gawn! What they did after the break was nothing short of gutsy and inspirational. On the other hand, the Cowboys were apparently a tad woeful last week against Manly. I’m led to believe they have injury concerns at the club and they’ll be going into this one with a somewhat under-strength side. That, along with Taumalolo still suspended is making me like the Titans a little more. The Titans for me.
Storm - I am aware that some sides can have a form turnaround when their coach is sacked but it would take a freakin’ huge turnaround for the Tigers to get up in this one you’d think. “The Storm were tough and the Tigers were fluff.” What more can I say? Storm Troopers should do this without much trouble.
Dragons - I just can’t understand why these 2 sides are so close in the betting. The Dragons did pretty well last week against Cronulla and haven’t started too bad this year. The Warriors let me down on home soil yet again (sorry JR) and need something special if they can be considered half a chance here. I can’t see that happening any time soon. Dragons for me.
OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.
P.S. Do cemetery workers prefer the graveyard shift? Hmmm…

With regards sporting derbies, there are lots of UK football ones dating back into the 1800's - The oldest that is still played would probably be Notts County V Nottingham Forest, first played in 1866.
Looking forward to a week where I can watch most of the games for the first time this season! Good luck everyone.

Glasgow Celtic v Glasgow Rangers, the Old Firm derby.
This is how wiki describes..
"The rivalry between the two clubs has become deeply embedded in Scottish culture and has contributed to political, social and religious division in Scotland and also beyond, especially in neighbouring Northern Ireland. As a result, the fixture is recognised as having enduring appeal."
See. The rivalry causes so much chaos, yet is embraced, revered, and so deeply entrenched in the culture of the people of this land.
Territory within the same City can be difficult to define.
There is no line to mark what is yours.
Instead you are left to fight and say this place is ours.
Club rivalry. Embrace it with passion.
It was never meant to have people hold hands through a meadow of daffodils.
If what I say about others teams, players, coaches etc is taken as something personal, than you still don't understand.
Even Thinker's Lounge tonight has a sign on the door with words that have previously been used by people in reference to me. Who wants to be part of a clubhouse anyway, who collectively have no idea.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Predominantly it's the northerners who don't understand. Not that it's their fault. They just don't have the same.
NRL, make them understand.
Give Brisbane a 2nd team.
Force this City into owning their own inter-City rivalry.
Then they will have no choice but to embrace.
More importantly, it would help improve this site no end.

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:
Rabbitohs by 4- Should be a cracking game. Will be an awesome battle between the forwards. My tip is the Rabbits to break the undefeated streak this season of the Roosters in this one.
Panthers by 16- Panthers to win big in this one.
Broncos by 6- This is be a cracking game. I think the Broncos at home in a tight one.
Bulldogs by 8- Ah. The grudge match. The Bulldogs to win this one I think to continue on their winning ways.
Sharks by 10- Eels do have Norman back for the Eels which is a huge boost for them. But I think that the Sharks to bounce back here.
Titans by 8- To continue the injury woes for the Cowboys, O'Neill is out but Gela-Mosby comes in who is an exciting prospect for the Cowboys. Exciting to see how this young backline will play for the Cowboys. But the Cowboys badly need the forwards to muscle up in this one, the halves to produce, which they likely will and the backs to back that up. But, although the Cowboys will improve from last week, I tip the Titans to upset the Cowboys here at home. It seems to be that the Titans play better without Hayne.
Storm by 20- New coach for the Tigers, could work out for them or could get much worse for them. I think it's going to be option 2 for the time being. Storm have a poor record at Leichhardt, but you would expect the Storm to win and win well here.
And the mighty Dragons by 14- The mighty Dragons. 2 wins, 1 loss. Pretty good start to the season. The forwards will muscle again and the backs will produce us with the points and produce them well. The mighty Dragons to roll on here to continue on their magnificent record against the Warriors. We've got to watch out for Tuivasa-Sheck, when he's on, he's on.
Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and with everyone's tips this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've definitely fired up the other in the last 6 months, but both know it's all a little tongue in cheek.

As out of touch as the pollies.

Spuriously purporting that the Old Firm derby has a causal effect of increased domestic violence in Glasgow is shamefully ill-conceived.
Since when would an individual household have fans of both teams?
Pretty rarely I would say.
The only logical connection here would be an increase in rolling pins to the head of the males who get home too late after a win and surely to those blokes you would say, serve yourself bloody right.

I'm a fan too coash. But agree with the Thinker regarding Old Firm, not so much that it causes an increase in domestic violence (Though rumour is it does with the theory being that the husband who's teams lost goes home and takes it out on the wife) - more so that it coincides with an increase in sectarian violence in Glasgow and Northern Ireland and whilst I'm all for massive rivalries between sports team and love a moody 'edge' to a game the hatred that fixture creates goes way too far.
Cheers for the kind words, just some mentally ill idiot - horrible for the victims and their fammilies but no point letting the guy affect day to day life - I just ignore that these things happen.
On other notes, I watched Rabbitohs - Roosters, how come the crowd was so sparse? I guessed at the weather?
