Round nineteen selections

New Zealand Warriors vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

These sides met in round 10 at Penrith, and the Warriors flew the boxes and led 28-6 at half-time. Then the Warriors did what the Warriors do, and threw away a game that was almost impossible to lose. The Panthers did win (against my better judgement) in round 18 against a very good side, but they got the rub of the green in that game and only scored two tries in 80 minutes. Two tries against the Warriors won't be enough..

Verdict – Warriors by 8

Result – Panthers by 12

Canberra Raiders vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – GIO Stadium

In their last seven outings the Raiders have scored 18, 20, 20, 22, 24, 20 and 20. They get bonus points for consistency, but only got the two points twice in those seven games. So the only question I'm asking myself when it comes to this game is this – is 20 points enough to beat the Dragons? Well...in their last five games the Dragons have scored 10, 32, 10, 2 and 16 points. Those 16 points were against the 15th placed Tigers, and those 32 points were against the 16th placed Knights. In those other games where they struggled for points they played teams currently in 8th, 13th and 14th. In all three cases they were playing away from home. So in the last five rounds the Dragons have played the bottom four teams, and struggled. The Raiders haven't won for a while, but surely they're better than that. Is 20 points enough? Surely.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Raiders by 4

Newcastle Knights vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

I hear people saying the Knights would be a frustrating side to support, but I could name quite a few teams that I would find more frustrating. Almost every week they give it a red hot go, and as a supporter I couldn't ask for more than that. I expect a tighter contest than most here, but I can't tip the Knights given their inability to win. They're close. They're very close, but I'm here to tip winners. Knights with a 10.5 handicap start looks tempting, but it's the Broncos for the win.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Broncos by 12

Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

I do have to keep reminding myself that the Titans did beat the Sharks in round eight, and that was in Sydney. I've reminded myself umpteen times now, and it's not making a lick of difference, and that's because I can't get that Sharks performance in round 18 against the Chooks out of my head. They were ruthless and brilliant, and it reminded me of the Sharks in the second half of last season. It may have been a complete bloody fluke, or they may be about to surge when it's a very good time to start surging. Watching this one with interest.

Verdict – Sharks by 10

Result – Titans by 20

Manly Sea Eagles vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Lottoland

The Tigers don't buy Lotto tickets. They've played here 11 times and they've won once. That Tigers team that did win was an awful lot better than the team playing this Sunday. If Tedesco does get through Origin on Wednesday night he's not likely to back up here. Manly let me down last weekend but they won't be losing the penalty count 14-4 at Lottoland. In a competition where nothing is certain this is as close to a certainty you are ever likely to get. Disclaimer: most of my certainties this season have lost.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 16

Result – Sea Eagles by 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Barlow Park (Cairns)

I've been doubting the Cowboys in a post-Thurston world but the doubting ends here. In recent weeks the only teams to beat them are the teams running first and second. On both occassions the Cowboys were without Thurston, they were close (1 point loss to the Storm and a 4 point loss to the Sharks) and they were away from home. They are away from home in this game but they're closer to home than the Rabbitohs. Two weeks ago the Rabbits looked promising but it was clearly a false dawn. I suspect that lacklustre performance against the Chooks is what we can expect from the red and green for the rest of the season. If they can't turn up against the Chooks I can't see them turning up here. At least they get to enjoy some warm weather for a couple of days.

Verdict – Cowboys by 20

Result – Cowboys by 13

Another origin series after tonight

ay's picture

Still no tips from Wally. Too many XXXX Golds have kept him in bed after last nights win

Mary S's picture

Hi 'ay'.
Wally gives his tips on Channel 9 usually the night before matches start(so tonight in the sports segment approx 6.40pm), then they appear on the Thinkers site, either the same night or early the following day. When I was first persuaded to join a work tipping comp. is where I discovered his tips and consequently found this site. It has been great and helped me get to the front of the work comp on several occasions.
All the best with your comp!

Mary S's picture

And yes 'ay' it was a hell of a great match last night (from a Queenslander's prospective) and I bet the XXXX flowed long into the morning.

Johns snorts 's picture

I am wary of tipping the raiders, been playing pretty ordinary of late should a be good round this one.

a's picture

Here are my tips

Warriors by 4 I think the Warriors will win here

Raiders by 8 I think the Raiders will keep their season alive here

Broncos by 16 I think the Broncos will win and win easy

Titans by 1 I think the Titans can upset the Sharks here

Sea Eagles by 20 Damn I think the Sea Eagles will win easy here

Cowboys by 6 I think the Cowboys will win 3 in a row without Thruston

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Warriors by 8- Warriors to beat the Panthers here at home.

Dragons by 2- The mighty Dragons in a close one to continue ion their streak in Canberra against the struggling Raiders.

Broncos by 10- Damn, I feel sorry for the Knights, I really do. If only they knew how to win. But, hey on the bright side, at least they are giving it a red hot go. They'll do it again against the Broncos here but, the Broncos' class will get them over the line here.

Sharks by 4- Gotta say, this is going to be a cracking game. Perhaps the game of the round. Last time these two met, the Titans got the upset win over the Sharks in Sydney. This time it's the Sharks turn to get the away win here in a thrilling game.

Sea Eagles by 22- I can't see anything else but a Sea Eagles win. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a 50-0 or 60-4 shellacking here but you never know, it's a funny game rugby league but Sea Eagles to win big here.

And finally... the Cowboys by 12- Cowboys too good for the Rabbits here. The warm weather in Cairns will affect the Rabbits, it's pretty much a home game for the Cowboys. And even without Thurston the Cowboys have been winning so Cowboys for me.

Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams for this week and with everyone's tips for this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spartan Warrior's picture

Greetings from the Spartan Warrior,
To Lady Christine and Master ‘a’ it would be remiss of myself not to thank thee. Both of you accepted my presence on Master Thinker’s site immediately, even though you knewth I was different. I make no apologies to anyone for being different, for I am from another time. My past, both good and bad, is what hast shaped me. I am the original Spartan Warrior. When the internet became worldwide in the early 1990’s, I joined it as a naïve Spartan Warrior hoping to escape the battles in my life. Little did I knoweth another battle hadst already begun on the worldwide internet and once again I hadst to raise my sword and shield in defence over many years. So thanks to you both, I am now tipping games on Master Thinkers site. Master ‘a’, some time ago you hath asked which team I follow, please excuse me for not replying. I follow a team that no longeth combats in the NRL premier league. However, the team I follow still plays in the NSW cup. This team was also a founding team of rugby league in Australia and sadly it was dropped from 1st grade in 1983. The team I follow are the Bluebags.
Anyway it’s time to submit my tips:
Warriors by 4
Raiders by 12
Broncos by 14
Sharks by 2
Sea Eagles by 12
Cowboys by 7
The Spartan Warrior has spoken

Taka's picture

Now that origin is over, the remaining rounds for this season will be interesting. Most of the teams below the top eight will try to make the eighth. But if the top eight teams keep winning than it'll be harder for the bottom teams that are on 16 & 18 points to crack the eighth spot. Well anything can happen so I'll just wait and see.

My round 19 tips:

Panthers by 10
Raiders by 6
Broncos by 8
Sharks by 7
Eagles by 12
Rabbitohs by 4

Cheers...!

I think you should be in the tipping Comp next year Spartan

Baggy_Gee's picture

It'll be good for the storm, roosters, bulldogs and eels to have the weekend off, the storm will be pretty hard to pull back with 8 games and a good rest. The rooster also are very nicely placed being in virtual 2ND with the bye. Just hoping that the BOYS can push through for the eight.

christine's picture

Spartan warrior, You don't have to thank me I would do it for anyone & fortress before you even say it I even did for you when the person we no longer mention on this site gave you a hard time & didn't want you on here so just remember how it feels , Spartan warrior good to see you putting in your tips ...

newbie from perth's picture

Sa-wat-dee krup,

Late as usual but have an excuse. Got carried away watching the Mighty Arsenal (current English FA Cup holders) playing an exhibition game against Sydney FC on SBS. Not bragging or anything but the Gunners were simply toying with the Sky Blues and took it easy and won 2-0. God I love those boys! Anyhoo, time for the real football so let’s get into it…

But before I do, a question for that Mighty Spartan Warrior … being a lowly newbie serf from Perth who grew up with the aerial ping-pong, would you be so kind as to divulge the identity of said “Bluebags”. That is, what’s their “official” club name? Thank you kind sir!

Warriors - The Warriors have home-ground advantage and Isaac coming back. I’m assuming they remember letting the Panthers score 32 unanswered points in Round 10 and might want to even things up. The Panthers did however knock off a good Manly outfit so you never know. I’ll stay with the Warriors in this one.

Dragons - The Raiders have lost four games in a row whereas the Dragons have managed to win one of their last four. I get the impression the Raiders have lost the plot a little. The Dragons haven’t exactly been setting the place alight though so this is a hard one for me. I do like the fact that the Dragons have a fairly decent defence that might just be enough to get them over the line. The Dragons for me.

Broncos - How the hell did the Knights manage to lose to the Doggies last week? The Broncos have had an extra week off and I just can’t see them losing this.

Sharks - What the Sharks did to my BBB has me picking them to knock off the Titans this week, with or without their Origin guys.

Manly - Manly got “dacked” last week by the Panthers but they’re a better side than that and should be able to knock off the Tigers and send the Brookie crowd into joyous rapture. This deal is done and dusted.

Cowboys - Rabbitohs home game in Cairns has the Cowboys rubbing their hands together and smiling. The Cowboys were pretty good 2 weeks ago and had last week off to rest up. Souths had an ideal chance to knock off my under-strength BBB last week but came up short. Just don’t think they have enough left in the tank to make a run to the finals. Sorry, but Cowboys for me.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. Are there any unguided missiles? Hmmm…

Hardyards's picture

Good morning fellow Rugby league aficionados.
Apologies Thinker, my first post should have contained a big thank-you for this great site, please accept my heart felt thanks for the effort you put in to keeping us lesser minds in the 'ARL' know.

I will not attempt to post my opinion, as it is very Cowboy orientated, and I (sometimes blindly) always believe the Cows can run home Champions. I even smashed my Bank to ensure I was at our Maiden Grand final. I don't regret spending a cent :)

Anyone else going to visit Cairns to watch, not only the Cowboys take on the Rabbitohs for a Sunday afternoon footy delight, but also Double Header with Scotland to take on Tonga and Ireland to play Italy? That’s a value for money ticket. Hope to see you there.
Cheers All, and may your team emerge victorious, and players finish uninjured.

And hello to you to Hardyars good to have another Cowboys supporter along

Rocket Ryan

You are the epitome of all Queensland Grubs. True league followers have some integrity, and empathy, rubbing peoples noses in their own misery shows what sort of person you are.

Do yourself a huge favour, look up in the dictionary the word"etiquette, study it and take note of how it applies to being a football fan.

Johns snorts 's picture

Tigerholic obviously forgets the atrocious post try celebrations by those NSW grubs and johns in 2000

Hi 'A'. Thank-you and I'll make sure my love of the Cowboys is promoted in this forum, and others will flock on board once they fully experience the brilliance of the "currently injured but definitely the next GOAT's" team.

Evenin Newbie - hope all is well over in WA.

Love your posts mate, but a slight correction in the real football.
When rugby league is played on the foot 90% of the time, I'll stand being corrected. Good to know you have a liking or love to football/soccer, because I certainly do. Love me rugby league as well.

EPL starts around 13th August in UK. Will be interesting tomorrow night, to see how West Sydney Wanderers "light up" the night against The Gunners. As long as crowd behaves, the colored smoke can be tolerated, as it is part of the Euro feeling.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

Origin period must be over...Warriors served up an embarrassing effort to send out one of their best Manu Vatuvei. Such a disappointment...

just a comment on the football thing. I hear a few soccer fans argue that they are really the only sport entitled to the title of football because they are the only one where most of the sport is played with the feet.

this is a flawed argument because the origin of the term football is actually any sport not played on horseback ... ie a sport played on foot.

soccer people hate it when I point this out ... but it doesn't make it less true.

p.s. I like soccer

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yay 2 from 2. I see Ryan copied my tips as well.

pabdul's picture

Football is a term used for the most common type of football in that particular area such as AFL in Melbourne NRL in Sydney gridiron in the US and Gaelic football in Ireland and so on. All the soccer nations call it football as again it's the most popular form where they live. So when people say soccer is the real football that's incorrect. It all depends where you live. I love soccer and went to the Arsenal game yesterday and I love football which where I come from is rugby league.

newbie from perth's picture

Just heading off to beddie-byes and thought I’d get on and post a few “shout-outs” if I could…

@ Spartan Warrior
Thank you kind sir for letting me know your “Bluebags” are in fact Newtown. I can remember reading about them constantly back in the day when I first started buying Rugby League Week. What a great magazine that was. Full colour, nice big size and all the latest gossip, wrap-ups and great photos. What a shame it is no longer. I’m sure we had some members down at Fremantle Roosters who were connected to Newtown in some way, shape or form. There might’ve been some who actually played for them but not a 100% sure on that as it was such a long time ago. I’d have to check with my brother – his memory is better than mine. Anyway, thanks again for the clarification, I now know a little more.

@ Big Pete
Get your point on the “football” thing and understand why most purists consider it so. Yeah, I’ll be settling down Saturday to watch the Gunners play the WSW. Living in Perth has its perks sometimes – the coverage starts nice and early on SBS. I think it starts at 5.30pm but not sure when the actual kick-off is. Channel 9 doesn’t broadcast NRL on Saturdays over here and I will definitely NOT be watching the AFL so it’s the Exhibition Game for me. I love my Gunners and look forward to the EPL each year to tide me over for a while after the NRL has finished.

@ pabdul
You were at the Arsenal game? You are leading a charmed life at the moment. I must admit I’m a wee bit jealous. I’ll just have to live the glory of walking past Highbury (their old ground) in the off season in 1985 and kissing the wall as a sign of my love for them. Only thought about the possible germs and spit and kak I exposed myself to on the Tube ride home. Hey, couldn’t have been that bad if I’m still alive and kicking eh?

@ The Boss
Was totally unaware of the origin of the term “football” – thanks for the enlightenment. Not that I don’t trust you or anything but rather because I have an enquiring mind, I did a quick Google and it seems you (and pabdul) are 100% correct. Then again, when are you not? Keep bringing us the odd pearls of wisdom and I’ll be happy.

OK, nuff said, I’m outta here. Stay safe, stay sane and love life. As far as I know, it’s the only one we’ll ever have. Peace!

pabdul's picture

Yes the arsenal game was great coming from London I've been to high bury which is an experience you never forget.
I have 3 loves apart from the wife and they are arsenal the roosters and the western bulldogs ive already told them when I go I want to be buried with all 3 jerseys as they all gave me the same amount of pleasure. I had a dream about this that I died and I got to the pearly gates and met St. Peter and he said you can enter heaven but you can only bring one jersey. I said that's impossible. He said you need to go to limbo till you decide (now I know why so many people are in limbo). So I said bugger that how do you get into hell then? St. Peter replied did you bring a Melbourne storm jersey?

BigPeteBx's picture

Mr Thinker - point noted with feet v's hoofs.
I do however state, that played on the feet, might differ a little more, when played with the feet.

Glad you like your football/soccer.
Who is your favourite in EPL mate?

For the sake of a former Socceroo's captain in the late Johnny Warren, who loved to see the day, when the word soccer was replaced with football in this country. I'll stick with football.
I met Johnny in Dubbo one day when my U/17 District Rep Team played a curtain raiser to St George Budapest/Dubbo select team v's Bathurst 75. Then I met his brother (Ross) at NSW State Championships, which we contested back in 1982 and won both State and Country titles.

Keep well T and TLH
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hahahaha.....loved that Pabdul.
Again, I saw Arsenal play West Ham in FA Cup Final at old Wembley, of which we have previously discussed. I was with Gunners that day.
Maybe mate, I would have said - a Manly RLFC jersey.
Keep well and enjoy your weekend.
Big Pete (Saint for short).

pabdul's picture

Hi Pete
I hope your getting cremated then coz the grave digger will bury you and cremated the manly jersey.

Baggy_Gee's picture

So fortress, Nathan Brown is still undeserving while his team is performing quite well. The broncos might have to pull their thumbs out to close this game out.

Goodnight!!!!!!

Yawn...any other alive person on here over these rants? Bring back the Coach. At least some of his posts made sense...

GaryChesterUK's picture

Its all got a bit vitriolic on here? Bit of banter is one thing but its all a bit serious? Anyone would think you people all know each other personally?

Back to the rugby, Sharks have been dreadful in this match, though the first half was as wet as i've seen a game of League, and I'm in the UK!

pabdul's picture

Vitriolic is a great word gary

christine's picture

Steel panther I agree we don't need it but we don't need coach here either between the two that's just one big headache ...

christine's picture

Gary from the uk We had a game played once between skarks & storm in Cronulla at sharks home ground which was worse than the game tonight between titans & sharks but at the game between sharks & storm they had spectators wearing goggles , flippers , & a snorkel & it was directional rain & there was a lot more of it too ...

a's picture

Yeah the weather was horrible in the Titans and Sharks game

Mary S's picture

Obnoxious is another word that suits Fortress and Coach spud.

christine's picture

I have to say how good is the drainage at cbus stadium you saw how wet it was at half time & when the came back out for the second half all the water was gone you have to give them credit for that ...

christine's picture

Mary s I can think of a few but we will just leave it with your choice for now , all the best ...

Mary S's picture

Same to you Christine - enjoy the rest of your weekend footy.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Yeah was very wet first half but the drainage system done a good job, much better game 2nd half.

1st half a football (Soccer) game would have been abandoned, too dangerous with tackles flying in and the ball not rolling properly.

Good result for the titans though but sharks didn't really turn up...

Steel Panther's picture

@Gary...no doubt you'll have seen that Salford have signed one of the Warriors favourite sons Manu Vatuvei. I don't get to see a lot of Super League but will be interesting to see how he goes. He's been very injury prone these last few seasons.

EagleROCKS's picture

Every one, you all support JNS and baggy disrespecting my mate Fortress and when he defends himself and his club you all have the hide to put him down for that as well.
Good on ya fortress were with you all the way mate.

Mighty Eagles have had a great win over the Tigers and the Mighty Eagles tough and gritty with great Defense and attack. Second on the ladder can anyone beleive it!! But us mighty Eagles supporters belive it, Whatch out were comming to get you!!!

Go the mighty Eagles doing the Eagle ROCK!!!!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Just before you get ahead of yourself on both your accounts Fortress, the Roosters are actually second on 28 points, you are third on 26. Better luck next time.
