Round thirteen selections

Melbourne Storm vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – AAMI Park

The Storm have a team list that's 23 players long so they'll be trimming that between now and Friday. I'm assuming Smith, Cronk and Chambers play until I hear otherwise – none of them gave any indication they were injured on Wednesday night. Cameron Smith made just four metres in Origin One with the ball under the arm, which tells you just how dominant the NSW forward pack were. Given the size and talent in the Storm pack he and Cronk should have a little more room to work with on Friday night. 1st plays 16th, and 1st are playing at home. Purple picks itself.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result – Storm by 28

Parramatta Eels vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

Two teams that don't know how to play for 80 minutes are playing each other, so prepare yourselves for a topsy turvy match with plenty of momentum changes. Both sides are notoriously inconsistent, but if there's one consistency I can rely on it's that the Warriors struggle all too often away from home. They haven't won a game in Australia this season and, somewhat surprisingly, this is just their second visit to ANZ Stadium since their 2011 Grand Final loss to Manly (when Keiran Foran was playing against the Warriors). Clearly you can't tip either of these sides with any confidence but the Eels did enough to get the win in round 12 and I'm tipping them again.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result – Eels by 8

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The Dragons have won just one from three without Gareth Widdop but the statistics don't tell the whole tale. Those two losses were competitive and they happened to be against the top two teams (and the two grand finalists from 2016). Widdop has been named this weekend but it wouldn't surprise me if they waited one more week. These sides met in round five at this venue and in this timeslot and the Dragons won comfortably. Tedesco and Woods are set to return from Origin but even then this Tigers outfit looks far from settled. New recruit Lolohea slots straight into the halves with Littlejohn and that combination may take time. Dragons...comfortably so.

Verdict – Dragons by 10

Result – Dragons by 4

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

Of all the games this weekend this is clearly the contest most dirupted by the Origin game. Six Broncos and five Roosters played on Wednesday night and we wait to see how many back up three days later. Napa, Pearce, Ferguson and Milford must have some doubts over them and there could be others. McCullough is an important inclusion for the Broncos and Hunt should be better for the run last week. The Chooks are a warm favourite but I'm with the Broncos here on the assumption that the Broncos back row of Thaiday, Gillett and McGuire all play. The Roosters haven't lost many games this year but they did get towelled up by the Broncos in round six, and the Broncos record at Allianz Stadium is a lot better than most would expect.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Roosters by 2

North Queensland Cowboys vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

If Kevin Walters is looking for some up-and-coming Origin forwards (and he probably should be) then he should be watching this game to see how Jarrod Wallace and Coen Hess perform. I was sorely tempted to pick the Titans here, but I've been won over by the Cowboys back row (and solid interchange) in the end. Thurston has been named (almost) but you can't imagine he would play. O'Neill may be in doubt for the Cowboys but they have Hampton or Bowen on their list to slot in if need be. Peats may not back up for the Titans either, and he's a little harder to replace. I'm not particularly confident here. If you were considering the Titans don't let me talk you out of it.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result – Cowboys by 12

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Lottoland

The bookies and everyone else are finding this game hard to split but I'm seeing green. The Raiders have a settled line-up, are close to full strength and daytime conditions help their cause. While I accept they lost to the Knights on a Sunday afternoon I'm assuming they took their opponent lightly on the day. I can't see them taking the Sea Eagles lightly. Looks like the game of the round to my eye.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Sea Eagles by 1

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The Bulldogs would be thankful that Hopoate has agreed to play on Sundays because they need all the help they can get, particularly if Brett Morris can't overcome his Origin niggles. In their last five outings the Dogs have averaged just 13.5 points per game and this is their primary issue they need to resolve. The Panthers have made some pretty significant changes to their line-up – Moylan moves into the halves alongside Cleary and Mitch Rein starts at hooker for the injured Peter Wallace. Whatever the line-up, you know the Panthers have points in them, and the return of Josh Mansour on the wing doesn't hurt either. The 4pm kick-off lends itself to expansive attacking football too, only bolstering the Panthers cause. Dogs vs Cats. Meow!

Verdict – Panthers by 4

Result – Panthers by 38

Wally Lewis - round thirteen selections (in bold)

Yeah they were weeks where there was 400 comments

Yeah in the years before you know who came along you could see the only people who are still on here today me Christine Mark Steel Newbie and Rick had comments from the early years

Johnny Awesome,

If you can't find what Steel Panther is referring to here is a link for you:

https://the-thinker.org/nrl-tips

This site started mid-season 2011, but the tips used to appear on another site (which no longer exists), and from memory I started that from the beginning of season 2010. There's a few here that were around even for that...pretty sure Mark Ashford was.

In 2011 we used to get about 4000 views each round and we thought that was pretty darn good.

In 2012 we wondered if anyone would remember us after the off-season but remember us they did (thankfully) and it's just steadily grown since then.

This season we are close to 40000 views each round....so we are nearly ten times bigger now than we were then. Pretty incredible really, given we don't advertise at all. It's just good people like you coming back and hanging around...and word of mouth.

A few years back I was at a dinner party thing and we started talking about the NRL and this fella I just met that night tells me he is winning his tipping comp at work. Then he pulls out his phone and shows me this website he uses for his tips. I didn't tell him it was me :-)

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi Mr Thinker,
That's a terrific story. Wow thanks for giving me a run down on the origin. Thanks heaps for your reply. I must admit I was using your site for a while before signing up. Yep, you certainly helped me win my sisters oztips comp as well. I was reading up on your stuff, checking out footy forecaster which is quite dispassionate, but good because it just works on the analytical stuff.. I then used a bit of gut feeling. All in all, I ended up using about 90% of your recommendations. Thanks Mr Thinker. We had about 40 family and friends doing the footy comp. The win got me a new BBQ and yep I told my family about your site. I give you a toast with each sip of Carlton dry whilst cooking those snags. Great story regarding the chap at the party, fairdinkum. Cheers from Mr Awesome. Sorry for typos using phone.

I came in 2012 I discovered this site cause I was looking for somewhere when Wally was tipping in the off season than I found this website I also found another website I post my tips on that also no longer exists so I keep on this website I have got to say I wish some old people would come back Thinker but hey you on 138 likes up the top it's good that more people come on the site every year

Does that person that shows you the site comments on here

Maybe if more people comes on maybe you should put a page on social media sites so you can see how many people like the page

Do you ever look back on the older pages anyone else

a's picture

And also what made you create the tipping comp can you tell me how you made the idea

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
Thank s for the link Mr Thinker, saved it to my desktop. Should keep me occupied for a while.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Yeah it will be good to see the people back than

christine's picture

Well it's happened in England again garry from the uk keep safe ...

Mary S's picture

Thank you Mr Thinker for the story of your site.
In 2013 I had agreed to enter a tipping comp at work, with a sport I knew absolutely nothing about. On hearing Wally Lewis giving his tips on the TV, it encouraged me to do a search, as I was doing the same as Johnny Awesome and 'a' and looking for info to assist my tipping. As a result I found your site and have followed it with interest ever since.

Like Johnny Awesome, and much to the amazement of other tippers at work, I won the comp that year and have been successful on another occasion.

Although I have followed comments on your site since 2012, I have only posted this year as there was time on my hands recovering from a total knee replacement.

As I find people fascinating, with their passion for the sport and their teams, different views and sometimes obnoxious attitude, I will continue to follow the site with interest.

Many thanks to all who contribute.

Hit the wrong key - should be 2013 half way down my last post.

christine's picture

christine's picture

Mary s I hope ever thing goes well for you with the healing & rehabilitation of your knee replacement , some find it easier than others I know a lady that's looking at have her third ,two being on the same leg but the doctors don't want to do it they say there is nothing else left to take but she won't except that & claims it's just not the same as it was before & she falls all the time but I think mentally if you put your mind to it the doctors can only do what they can & the rest is up to you , stay strong mary s ...

a's picture

Yeah Gary I hope everything is okay I think the Thinker should contact him

christine's picture

Yes Thinker can you try to get in contact with garry from the uk he hasn't posted a comment since rd 11 & I don't know if he's caught up in amongst all these terror attacks in England ?

The Thinker's picture

Christine and 'a'

I'm pretty sure Gary is in the city of Chester (hence his name) which is a long way from London.

Not sure if he's still visiting the site but I'd like to have him back. He's a good egg.

Raiders.......groan!!!

The Thinker's picture

If the Raiders pull this off today it shall be quite the win. If they don't, the Ricky Stuart post-match media conference will be very interesting indeed.

The Thinker's picture

And Manly win .... Thinker shakes head.

Over to you Ricky

a's picture

2nd time Manly have beaten Raiders in golden point

Steel Panther's picture

I've just watched the game too Thinker & I wondered if you knew Manly would have 15 on the paddock when you made your decision to tip the Raiders? Talk about getting the rub of the green today & then they still needed golden point to win. Refs gave the Raiders nothing...disgraceful.

christine's picture

Thankyou Thinker for letting us know & hopefully we can get garry from the uk back on the site again one day , From memory he was offended by the one who shall remain name less at one stage ...

fortress's picture

What a awesome game we had today, well done to both teams.

EagleRocks

The Thinker's picture

Even the golden point decision was wrong. Fair dinkum.

christine's picture

Panthers had better win this game , bulldogs don't seem to be the threat they were before to other teams would you like to give your opinion on that taka as to what is going on with bulldogs this season win or lose something is going on ?

christine's picture

Thinker I'm not a walking atlas when it comes to other countries I just know England is over there some where I wouldn't even no which direction to head in but at least I can admit that ...

christine's picture

sorry for the spelling my spell check is from Ireland ...

EagleROCKS's picture

Yes Fortress

we had a magnaficient game, and close game today!!!! Great win!! Great team!!!
more credit should be giving to my great team!!
The Eagales are Flying high. keep it up fortress!!!

Fortress's picture

And the haters out in force steel panther u Cronk give yourself an upper cut or are you baggy pants in disguise !!!!!!

What a magnificent epic win by the mighty eagles,in an epic game of footy, great fightback by the raiders, but the mighty eagles again gutsy never say die attitude, these 2 clubs have now fought out 2 epics this year, same as the broncos and nth qld last year, great to see these top devision clubs showing the world what our game is all about imcrediable attack today rock brickwall defence and the mighty eagles once again putting egg on the critics faces.who would ever in there rightful ming critisize that game only people who have hatred who don't have passion and who don't enjoy classic epic rugby league, its the way footy should be played by 2 gutsy footy teams, with the mighty eagles getting home in a magnificent gold point epic !!!!!!!!

And as the fortress always says go the mighty sea eaglesssssssssssss

The Thinker's picture

Love is blind Fortress....but your team got the win.

The Raiders could have easily turned it up today, but they tried to the end even when everything was going against them. A great effort...no reward.

A fine for their coach in 10,9,8.....

christine's picture

I had raiders on the thinkers website but on the talking sport comp I had manly so if panthers win I will get 6 / 7 on the talking sport tipping site & 5 / 7 on the thinkers website ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Princess I'll just point out that it's twice in two straight games Manly has given up a lead of 14 points, one they lost and one they just scrapped home. Not what you'd call convincing great play.

pabdul's picture

fortress is about to go off in 10,9,8,7..

Baggy_Gee's picture

I just love how I say nothing and poor Steel talking with the boss get accused of being me. Next he'll accuse the boss of being the Coach in disguise.

The Thinker's picture

75 minutes from Junior Paulo today for the Raiders....a big effort from a very big man.

And that 'loose carry' from him in the 85th minute that costs them the game. Ouch.

He'll be hurting tomorrow.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good afternoon Thinker.
Correct Gar is from Chester - which is located I think near Wales Border.
Gary and I used to have an occasional chat about EPL.
He should be in good spirits, as this morning Real Madrid (Spain) played Juventus (Italy) in Champions League Final at Millenium Stadium in Wales.
Yes, no matter who it be. This site has grown in numbers and views and we care about our members.
Great stuff Thinker on a little bit of the past and the memories that live forever.

Cheers and Go The Mighty Sea Eagles. Close game, but we'll take the 3 pts.
Big Pete

Steel Panther's picture

Fortress you obviously can't read. My post gives the refs a serve for their poor performance something you often do. & what's a Cronk? Doesn't he play for the Storm. Calling people names because you don't agree with their post is childish. Just disagree, don't bag the individual for having an opinion. That's what the Coach used to do.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good one Pabdul - love the avatar which is much better.
Talk is on of golden point again. Well Manly copped a couple of defeats in the past two seasons going down that way.
This time they can settle for the win - not loss.
Fortress is flying high above Eagle Rocks (without the rocks).

Cheers SBAB and all - Big Pete (smiling - not humming)

The Thinker's picture

Exactly Steel

We aren't having a crack at the Sea Eagles. They got the win...good on them. Two points is two points.

The Raiders lost two prop forwards early and still came home with a wet sail in front of a hostile crowd and with some questionable calls by the officials. Good on them. Two points lost...sadly.

pabdul's picture

raiders lost players and got some bad calls but after 83 mins and 42 secs they were behind so good on you manly. as hot chocolate once said you win again hummin or what

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Baggy I do agree in teams having a massive lead and taking foot off the accelerator. That is certainly one thing NSW Blues didn't do last Wednesday night.
However, a win is a win and I look to see who the players were that walked off at the full-time whistle. Some purely couldn't wait until final whistle, I dare say - especially if involved in SoO 1.

Cheers - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

I see it ever weekend Pete, early lead blown by the boys and then the heart stopping nonsense that is the last ten minutes we get as Parra supporters. I don't get how a mixed team for NSW hold it together and are still running and hitting hard, but playing for your club and fans, you clock off after 50 minutes and 12 point lead to lose it in the last 15. Just mind blowing.

Fortress's picture

I'm sorry but baggy pants and steel panther before the start of the year who would of had my great club where we are on the ladder not many I say,u both were praying my club went down today ,and when ur prayers were not answered u both once again come on here with only one thing to give just hate, tripe, verbal diarrhea.

What we saw were both teams wanting to win the raiders are not an average team by any stretch of the imagination, thy were tipped by many to take the title out this year.

That was an epic any real football lover would attest to that, but only the haters, blinded by there own inept clubs for god sake look at that tripe that was served up last night 100 errors ,and rabble.

One wonders why these people support this great game,it needs a rare breed of people who can see it as it is fact not fiction and the fact is that was a magnificent game of footy, thirsty the commentator on 2gb said in his own words at the end of that epic.
"That was rugby league'

Manly warringah, manly warringah they" ll all be waltzing behind us this year, from crounalla,to penrith,to kogarah and the cricket ground they"ll all be waltzing behind us for we are victory bound!!!!!!!!

Padbul I'm a humming.

Cheers everyone from the fearless fortress,of the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yeah it seems like Raiders are getting bad calls against them every week

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,

I've updated the tipping competition. Some knucklehead called The Thinker has found himself in the outright lead for the first time in a very long time.

Lillychino is storming up the comp ladder after a perfect round. Congrats also to BigPeteBX and Tigers 717 who also got 7 from 7 in round 13.

I'll get the NRL ladder updated once I've worked out the Byes and what-nots.

I'll have the round 14 page published on Monday for those that tip early, and my previews and selections should be done on Wednesday.

All the best

mark ashford's picture

Bit surprised Thinker appears to blame refs for the Manly win.
I didn't see the game and had tipped Raiders.
But surely you play the game to the last whistle and the best of your ability. Admittedly refs can influence a game but surely it's up to the players to get the win. We can't do anything about bad calls, most teams get them from time to time.
Manly stopped me getting 7/7 this week but I congratulate them on the win.
Panthers gave the Dogs a footy lesson this afternoon.
Had to have a laugh at Klemmer, every time he was tackled he got up mouthing off at the ref.

christine's picture

Padbul Good for you to see you lost your little green guy giving the bird & instead displaying your tri colours well done ...

Fortress's picture

2 straight games baggy pants,by my reckoning we thrashed the titans last game, and if u were referring to the 2 epics the mighty eagles and raiders have played I just wonder deep down inside that hated heart of yours that you wish ur inept club could of been involved in them I just wonder, and I wonder weather ur actually watching the football or playing hide and seek with your 2 great mates the spud head and steel panther I realy and truely wonder.

Wishing everyone a warm and great evening as we head to round 14 and it gets more interesting as every minute ticks !!!!!!!!!

Padbul
Cordner 2 Qld 0
Yes mate you now have a formidable captain.
Backing up from SOO he was amazing.
I think the Broncs were a bit flat after origin.
I must admit our Capt. Cam Smith left a bit to be desired.
Qld will reassess, look at our options and give you a good game in 2 weeks time.
Just hope NSW don't get complacent because it's at home.
Beware the wounded Maroons

Baggy_Gee's picture

Mark this afternoon is the perfect example why Klemmer is bad news for the Blues, argued everything, gave up easy mtrs on the penalty. We needs players like him who have brains, and Boyd is the perfect example.
