Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – AAMI Park
The Storm have named Jesse Bromwich on an extended bench – he must be a quick healer. I would urge the Broncos forwards to avoid making contact with the bones poking out of his body. Also back, after a slightly longer break from the game, is Billy Slater. He reclaims his number one jersey, Munster moves back into the halves while Riley Jacks and Young Tonumaipea will probably have to wait for another day. In a competition that is so darn unpredictable, I take some comfort from knowing what I'm going to get with the purple machine. Undefeated thus far after two away games in atrocious conditions, they continue on in their relentless pursuit of rugby league perfection. Some may say they are bored by the way they play, but by gee by jingo by crikey it's successful. The Broncos back up from another epic golden point encounter with the Cowboys. They have a short turnaround and one of the hardest road trips in town. I have to single out two Broncos from last week – Ben Hunt showed us how good he can be and Sam Thaiday played the full 87 minutes and looks ten years younger. He must be on the Corey Parker diet. The Storm return home and they don't lose their first home game of the season very often – they do like to remind the people of Melbourne that they have a very good NRL team before the AFL takes over the town like some hideous pandemic. It's the game of the round.
Verdict – Storm by 7
Result – Storm 14 defeated Broncos 12
Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – Forsyth Barr Stadium
Note the locations tipsters – this is the home game the Bulldogs take to New Zealand so they can come fly home with a briefcase full of crisp non-sequential fifty dollar notes. They often get the two points too, despite the travel. For those of you that aren't Super Rugby fans (and there are many of us), Forsyth Barr is the home of the Highlanders in Dunedin. It's an interesting stadium, and that's a good thing too because it usually plays host to Super Rugby matches (take note that I'm planning to have a dig at every other sport on the planet this week...two down). For reasons unknown the Bulldogs are rank outsiders on Friday night. They have lost Hopoate and Holland with injuries but they bring a big and willing forward pack, a pair of halves that have to prove themselves and enough Morris brothers to fill a......Mini Morris. The fullback for the Dogs, Brad Abbey, is a former Warrior who sought a release from them when they signed Tuivasa-Sheck. He'll be keen to prove himself. Marcelo Montoya gets a start on the wing. It's a name that wouldn't be out of place on Channel V or Rage but in reality he's a promising young Fijian and a great finisher. If there's one thing this game can do it's unearth a promising Fijian winger. Good luck son. The Warriors just beat the Knights and never looked likely against the Storm. Granted this game is in New Zealand, but the Warriors have a pretty ordinary record when they head out on tour in their native land. The Dogs competed in a high quality game in round two and I'm tipping an upset. $2.70 looks generous to me if such things interest you.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 4
Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Warriors 12
Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Cbus Super Stadium
When Channel Nine claimed this for their Friday night timeslot they were banking on Jarryd Hayne taking on his old club – but it's not to be. To make matters worse Corey Norman is out with a hamstring issue. Jeff Robson steps into the halves in lieu of Norman, and while he doesn't have the speed or the brilliance (or the looks according to Ms Thinker), he does bring a steady hand and a wise old (unattractive) head. Providing he can give his backs enough opportunities there's enough finishing power out wide for the Eels to get the job done. The Titans won't relent easily – that loss to the Knights would hurt even though circumstances were against them on the day. They'll try, but they'll fall short.
Verdict – Eels by 8
Result – Titans 26 defeated Eels 14
Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
Well blow me down with a feather – the Knights have won their first game in 300 and something days. Good for them I say, and may they celebrate like it's 2001. Clearly they are getting better but the stars did align for them in round two – round three may be more of a horrorscope. The Bunnies proved they could still compete in a post-Inglis world and they're unlikely to take their opponent lightly.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 16
Result – Rabbitohs 24 defeated Knights 18
Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium
If Channel Nine could swap their Friday night game I suspect they'd ask for this one. The Panthers bounced back in the best way possible with a demolition job on the other cats while the Roosters are undefeated after two solid performances. I'm leaning to the Panthers in their first home game of the season – given I've tipped them to win the premiership this season I naturally think they have a little more upside in them than the tricolours. The absence of Blake Ferguson gives me a little more confidence too – that does take some of the firepower out of that backline. Take note also that the Panthers have named Hiku and Zelezniak on their extended bench. The weather in Sydney is a little bleak of late and that may take some of the shine off this contest – in any case this is one of the must see contests this weekend.
Verdict – Panthers by 2
Result – Roosters 14 defeated Panthers 12
North Queensland Cowboys vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
The Cowboys are without Matt Scott, Jason Taumalolo, Lachlan Coote and Antonio Winterstein on Saturday night – yet they remain a $1.25 favourite to beat the Sea Eagles. That's hardly a ringing endorsement for the Sea Eagles. I accept they were pretty awful against the Bunnies, but their narrow loss to the Eels in round one had merit. If I could add Martin Taupau to the Sea Eagles pack I'd be tipping them. I still think they can win, and I will disclaim that I have backed them with 11.5 points start at $1.91 (gamble responsibly), but the Cowboys have players in their deck who just know how to win. They're on track for 26 consecutive golden point victories this season and it wouldn't surprise me if this went beyond 80 minutes also. The Cowboys...but only just.
Verdict – Cowboys by 1
Result – Sea Eagles 30 defeated Cowboys 8
Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium
Hey Dave Taylor is a big man. Never one to be late. Explains complex ideas in his brain.
He just wanders around, unaffected by, the winter winds, yeah. He'll pretend that, he's somewhere else, so far and clear, about two thousand miles from here.
Canberra coach Ricky Stuart was disappointed with the Raiders poor choices, silly errors and poor handling last weekend, and he's addressed that by bringing big Dave Taylor into the seventeen. Sheesus McSneezuz, I think Ricky has finally lost his gourd. Despite this rather baffling selection, I expect the Raiders will regroup and give their fans at home a better performance this week. That said, the Tigers at $2.94 for this game seems an over-reaction. Was their loss to the Panthers poorer than the Raiders loss to the Sharks? Anyhoo, I'm here to tip a winner and it's the green machine to bounce back at home. Total points overs folks...these two sides will rack up about 70 points in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
Verdict – Raiders by 4
Result – Raiders 46 defeated Tigers 6
Cronulla Sharks vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium
As far as local derbies go this is one of the biggies. I don't want to say these sides hate each other, but they definitely don't send each other Christmas cards. To borrow a phrase from the great Steve Roach – forwards determine who wins the game and the backs determine by how much. This forwards battle looks delicious, and I'm giving the Sharks a very slight edge because they'll have a big home crowd pushing them on. While the Dragons attack is showing signs of life, the Sharks are racking up 42 points against the Raiders. They may even give Valentine Holmes a run on Sunday. Worth watching.
Verdict – Sharks by 10
Result – Dragons 16 defeated Sharks 10

The Thinker,
I followed your advice and backed the Bulldogs at $2.60 to beat the Warriors. Even if they don't win from here I want to thank you for the tip. It was a very good bet.

Yes Bulldogs won 2 from 2 for me

Broncos, Warriors, Eels fans. Where are you?
Bloody happy to beat the chest after a win, but just as happy to hide in the corner after a loss.

Holy crap ! The Titans ! Congratulations to Rocket Ryan for being only one on here picking what has to be one of upsets of round ! Dude ! :-s

You know as kid I used to watch things like He Man and wonder how can someone constantly get things wrong ? How is it that Skeletor still hasn't managed to defeat He Man yet ? I don't get it ! You're not always going to get things wrong. Then I look at my league picks week after week and now I know. I'm my own worse enemy ... :-(

well my Warriors again let me down last night. Still the same old defensive lapses that have not been resolved since Cleary left and we need to seriously to get some physical props........
Well done the Titans...........great win for them !!!!!!!

Thinker, such an unfair tipping society we all live in.
A prize only for the one who, at the end of the week has everything, and nothing for the one who at the end of the week has nothing.
The rich tipper gets a richa, the poor tipper gets the pitcha.

Difficult to know which is the better omen tip for a soggy wet Rosehill Slipper -
She will Reign - or
Frolic
Both sound like wet-trackers. Quinella / Exacta combo maybe?

On the upside Baggy, just need Manly and the Knights to get up and Last One On The Couch would be you.

No actually this is the first time since Thursday afternoon I've been near a computer. Missed the game as work needed set up but planning on watching the replay later today. From what small analyse I have heard this morning from the triple M team, our old enemy was our edge defence. Josh Hoffman was called into question, my worry is that French is still a little small as a fullback in the line. Incredible in attack, but.............. probably needs 2 years and 10Kgs of muscle extra. Will have a better idea after the game. But last time the BOYS went 2-0 to start the season was back in the 90's so little wins, stoked to be top of the table last week, but as long as we are there at the pointy end of the season.

Hi Coach
Yes the "one who can't be named" is back in front of his computer.
Been fishing and crabbing (did quite well in both)
As I've said before this is a tipping comp not a loyalty to your club site.
We all want to win but of course support our clubs most of the time.
I too thought the refs were a bit tough on the Broncs but you have to play the full 80 to win.
Storm are almost impossible to beat at home and that's why I picked them. Correctly as it turns out.
Big surprise Titans over the Eels, may be just what they need with so many players out.
No interest in your "couch" comp or your ridiculous racist claims.
You sail "close to the wind" Coach but that's unforgivable.
Submitted by mark ashford on
On another more important track a local RL writer said in his column on Thursday (Brisbane Courier Mail) that he had it "from a reliable source" that Dessie Hasler would be "gone" before half way through the season.
The next day I hear Des has signed a two year extension to his contract.
Is this just Media BS and if so why do they write what they do?
I didn't think Des had done that badly.
For those struggling with winning tips and that includes me;
this has happened for the past 3/4 years, underdogs winning etc, just let things settle, try not to get too far behind, watch the form, and pick carefully. It will settle to where you can (hopefully) predict the round....Good luck!

Your curious questioning of my background only tars you with a heavier brush.

Submitted by mark ashford on
Coach, I have no interest in your background, just an interest in your aggression.
It's wonderful to have a RL rivalry, between clubs and of course SOO.
I've said before I admire your passion for the Panthers and of course NSW.
I dislike the word "hate" which you have just posted for the Broncos.
I don't "hate" your Panthers but of course hope we will beat you.
Hate to me is over the top perhaps "dislike" would be more appropriate.
I hate ISIL and all terrorists who want to kill us, but it stops there.
Take a chill pill Coach and lets get on with the season.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Melbourne based fans having a hatred for fans of Collingwood and vice versa is a great thing. Inter club rivalry isn't borne from friendship.
Sydney FC fans having a hatred for fans of Western Sydney Wanderers and vice versa is a great thing. Inter club rivalry. Not borne from friendship.
Glasgow Celtic fans having a hatred for fans of Glasgow Rangers and vice versa is a great thing. Not borne from friendship.
QLD Maroons fans having a hatred for fans of the NSW Blues and vice versa is a great thing. Not borne from friendship.
Try telling fans of any of these clubs they should not hate the other team mentioned. They should only dislike them.
You'd get laughed at.
And that's pretty much what we are all being advised to do. Laughable.
Hate in the context of footy is the mildest form of aggression there is.
Throwing barbs at the other team during a game is all part of the game.
Currently I'm needing to cop whatever a Rooster, or non-Panther wants to throw at me, and its up to me to wear it. I know they can say what they want, because I get to say what I want in the reverse situation. Explaining all this over and over is all very choresome, but I will keep explaining if I have to until people start getting it.

Jesus F$&@k America ! How did Sea Eagles manage to come from behind beat Cowboys 13 plus in Townsville ? How is that possible ? Yeah couple of their key players were out injured but come on ! You know who I blame ? I blame Beast Man. I don't know about you but I will be lucky to come out this round four from eight ... :-(

Straight out exacta tip of the Golden Slipper at 8:30am yesterday morning but noone even vaguely impressed ? C'mon.

Well done Coach. I was on Frolic and was more than happy with the effort.
Note that going into this round there were four teams yet to win a game. Three of those teams (Bulldogs, Titans and Sea Eagles) have won in round three in 'upset' results.
The Raiders are the only team without a win this season - how do they respond this afternoon?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
So far looks for all the world like plenty more Tigers players are still betting on themselves to lose.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Well listening to the call the entire game, they started so well. how they leaked 40 points without even hitting back. Sometimes I'm sure that players do bet on the opponent, take Manly last season, they lost some games that they shouldn't have.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Raiders 16th before kick off and by the end of today will be 7th.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Bit of a jump, not a huge amount of variation between F/A so far out of the top 8, But if the Dragons get up it'll only be F/A that edges the sharks into 8th. Cowboys will slide right down the list as well once there are more 2-1 teams in the ladder.

Evening football fans,

Giddy Folks
Last year and this year I have been working really hard on my mental approach to my love of football and golf. In golf I don't let one bad hole ruin my entire round.
With the Tigers I am handling each loss with a better temperament, today I just heard via a statement to all Tigers members that finally Jason Taylor has been sacked, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
All I can add to that is"bye bye Jason"
Submitted by Johnny Awesome on
Wow, it's obvious the JT sacking has been brewing for a while. Looks like the players are still running the asylum out at Wests Tigers and the board is as dysfunctional as ever. Yep, whoever they get as a coach would have to be as brave as the first man who ate an oyster. Maybe, Ivan Cleary is that man.
Submitted by Johnny Ray on
Ivan clearly is going be a good coach for West Tigers ... :-)
Submitted by a on
I think you made a mistake on RAZZLEDAZZLED he got 2 not 3
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Did Tigers make a pact to keep losing by plenty so that JTs fate would be sealed? Some of the tries yesterday were legitimate tries in touch footy. If this suspicion is correct, they need to sack more than just the coach.
Submitted by Thinker's Little Helper on
Thanks a - you're right, I've corrected RAZZLEDAZZLED's round total.

Tigerholic should we get on them this week
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Leichhardt Oval Sunday arvo and the first game with a new Coach phenomenon. Tigers like playing the Storm there as much as the Storm don't like visiting. Players keen to impress the new Coach. Theres three reasons to stick.
Submitted by tigerholic on
Coach/Rocket and everyone else
The only advice that I can give is stay off the Tigers, the Storm will do a job on them even at Leichhardt Oval.
You might remember that I picked the Tigers as wooden spooners, what place are they in at present????
I think Taylor had to go but there are bigger issues behind the scenes that are causing the poor form. The effort against the Raiders was pathetic, even you could have stopped a couple of those tries Coach.
Tedesco, Brooks, Moses and Woods are all off contract at years end, I can see a long dark road ahead for the mighty Tigers cause we won't keep all 4.
Submitted by Johnny Ray on
Yeah Tigerholic, I don't know about that because the thing is dude alot of teams recently have had big game after sacking their coach and not just rugby league teams. Look at Leicester City in EPl. They haven't lost a game since getting rid of their coach who won them a title. It's why I'm backing Tigers to win this week and is why I think you should too ... ;-D
Submitted by Coach Potato on
For all those that rave about Cleary (Ivan), the things I didn't like about him was his constant refusal to blame individual players for bad performances. He would give players chance after chance. Soft leadership if you ask me. I got doubts about that working at the Tigers.
Submitted by a on
JT was a terrible coach anyway
Submitted by Steel Panther on
You know I'm a Cleary fan. He was present at the Warriors in both their grand final appearances, firstly as a player and secondly as a coach. They say you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear but he nearly did and based on some of the rabble this team has that's nothing short of a miracle in my opinion. What have they done since he left......NOTHING!! They haven't made the top eight since. Good luck to him if he takes on the Tigers job.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
My problem was not that he wasn't a good coach because he was. It was that he showed me why his team has never lifted the trophy. Softly softly can carry you through the regular season and the odd final but it's not the approach when the season is on the line.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
As someone who is in Management, I agree, you need to have that hard edge so that people know that they can not cross you. But I prefer the soft touch as it is easier to get people to work with you than for you. Look at the almighty BRAD ARTHUR, he has been hard, but has still inspired the BOYS to join him on the process of becoming a better football team. If you can get people to see your vision and work with you to achieve that then your battle is half won.
