Round twenty five selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

A lot can change in a month. The Gold Coast need a new coach. Ms Thinker has completely different coloured hair and the Broncos are a raging hot favourite to beat the Eels on Thursday night. Astonishing really, given the Eels ran roughshod over the Broncos just four weeks ago when they won 28-14. The longer that game wore on the stronger the Eels looked – they won the last 70 minutes of that game 28-2.  On the back of that performance I'd pencilled the Eels in as a team that could give the premiership a shake...so what's changed? Well...in the three weeks since the Broncos haven't looked like losing, conceding just 22 points while they scored 110. Those are compelling figures at the business end of the season, particularly when two of those games were against teams that really wanted to win. The Eels have had three games in a row against teams outside the top eight, so they'll need to lift here, but given what happened four weeks ago they should, at the very least, go into this game with some self-belief. I'm tipping the Broncos, because this weird Thaiday/Hunt strategy seems to be working a treat, and the Milford/Nikorima halves pairing hasn't lost a game all season. Note the return of Frank Pritchard on the bench for the Eels – I'd all but forgotten he was still in the NRL. What a game on Thursday night folks – round 25 peaks early.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Eels by 18

Canberra Raiders vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – GIO Stadium

There was talk that the Raiders finals hopes were dashed with their loss to the Panthers on Sunday, but that isn't strictly true. They will need to win their last two games (which may not be as hard as it looks on paper) and they'll need games they aren't involved with to go their way. Once you're facing that equation you're in a spot of bother...but this isn't over until Dave Taylor sings karaoke in a backpacker bar in Thailand. Whatever happens this is the last home game for the Raiders this season, and I hope they give their loyal followers a performance worthy of The Clap (note to Dave Taylor – take care in Thailand my good man). Theoretically the Knights can still avoid the wooden spoon...but I think that's more unlikely than the Raiders making the eight.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders by 18

Wests Tigers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – Campbelltown Stadium

Unlike the Raiders the Cowboys finals prospects are still in their hands. If they win their last two games a top eight finish is theirs. Some big inclusions for the Cowboys in Cooper and Coote but note that they are named in the 21 man squad and not the 17 man squad – that leaves me thinking they are very unlikely to play. The Tigers have played three games at Campbelltown this season and been comprehensively flogged every time. If this were their last home game of the year I'd be tipping Tigers, but I might save that tip for next week. The Cowboys have lost four in a row but their opponents in all four games (Roosters, Storm, Panthers, Sharks) were better teams than their opponent on Friday night. I'm tentative...but Cowboys

Verdict – Cowboys by 2

Result –Cowboys by 8

Gold Coast Titans vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Des Hasler you fox you! For months we've all been wondering when you were going to get the sack, and here you are, the penultimate round of the season and you're taking the lads up to the Goldie for the weekend. And you're playing a team that just sacked their coach. And you won last week against a team you used to coach. Well played Des Hasler. Well played indeed. I have no idea how the Titans are going to respond on the field following the dramas off the field in the last week, and I doubt they know how they'll respond either. I'm going to assume Jarryd Hayne will have a bloody blinder, because the only way to get him to pull his finger out is to put a rocket under him. He needs to show the fans on the Coast that he actually cares enough to make a positive difference instead of tearing the joint apart. I think he can do that....for one game.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Bulldogs by 12

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park

The purple machine have wrapped up the minor premiership so it's worth watching for significant changes to the Storm line-up. If there were ever a game for Bellamy to rest a few players this would be it. To demonstrate just how dominant the Storm have been this season the team in second place (and the second favourite to win the premiership) played the Storm at home and got absolutely towelled up. They've lost just once since then (to the Eels) and in the last seven weeks they've been conceding (on average) around 12 points per game while scoring (on average) more than 27. The Rabbitohs most prolific try-scorer is unavailable with injury, and I can't possibly imagine how the Rabbitohs can score anywhere near enough points here. Unstoppable.

Verdict – Storm by 16

Result – Storm by 58

Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

Take note tipsters – I haven't had a ton of success tipping for or against the Sharks this season. While their performances at home have been pretty ordinary this season this is their last game at home for the year. Also note that when these sides met on the Central Coast not so long ago the Sharks gave us arguably their best performance of the season. They've been beating up on the Roosters for a while now and I suspect they can do the same on Saturday night. Third plays fourth and there's much at stake. These teams need to decide if they want to travel to Melbourne or Brisbane in the first week of the finals. Decisions Decisions...

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Roosters by 2

New Zealand Warriors vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

I can't believe I'm saying this – I miss the old unpredictable Warriors. I used to tune in every single time they played, because there was about a 30% chance they would deliver the most entertaining rugby league you were going to see all weekend. But now...now I don't even have to watch them. My eyes deserve better than that, and your eyes don't need to read me crapping on about them either. So instead, I'm just going to sing my Manly song (which isn't Eagle fricken Rock).

Oh Manly. Well you came and you gave without taking. But I sent you away. Oh Manly. You keep losing and I am not learning. And I've tipped you again. Oh Manly.

Verdict – Oh Manly by Barry Manilow (and by 8)

Result – Oh Manly by 1

Penrith Panthers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

The Panthers are on a seven match winning streak, and I don't know how many teams can say they've won seven games in a row this season. While many of their opponents during this run have been pretty ordinary, seven wins is seven wins, and my early tip for the Premiership this season can still, believe it or not, finish in the top four this year. While the Panthers were winning seven games in a row the Dragons have lost five of their last seven. Their only two wins during that period were over the 14th placed Titans and the 16th placed Knights. Moylan is out for the Panthers but they have another exciting young talent stepping in to take his place. Last week when the game was there to be won, Tyrone May walked off the bench and into the game and scored the winning try. Two Tyrones in the one team...it wouldn't have happened in my day. Three Garys maybe. Four Steves sure. Even a couple of Alans in the backline. The names have changed to protect the innocent.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Dragons by 2

Steel Panther's picture

I'm sure you picked up on my sarcasm Baggy. I didn't see the game but did manage to catch the highlights. It looks like Semi carved up and that 34 guys had all of a sudden forgotten how to tackle. Hard to believe such a scoreline and what a rarity to see Brisbane concede 50 at Suncorp. Well done to your BOYS.

Wow Eels scored after 18 seconds

christine's picture

Well done to your team last night baggy they played really well ...

Thinker breaking news laurie daly has been sacked as nsw state of origin coach ...

Hello all,
The fastest try by Auva'a is now the fastest in NRL history at 12.88 seconds. I was reading that the fastest try in rugby league overall is held by UK amateur club Wigan St Patrick's Dean Hatton who took 7.3 seconds to score in 2016.
Starting to sound like the NRL version of the Wild West with all the gunslingers/players ready for action. How good is rugby league. I love it. Cheers from Mr Awesome.

mark ashford's picture

Firstly congrats to your Eels, Baggy they were "electric" all over the park.
I thought Broncs defense for the entire game pathetic.
For a team that prides itself on not leaking too many, they were poor.
Not taking anything away from the Eels they were by far the better team.
Any teams meeting the Eels from now on should be worried.

mark ashford's picture

Havanna
Thanks for the kind words.
Hope you enjoy your fish dinner.
A top hairdresser and a good cook to boot.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Christine
Yes just heard Laurie has been let go (sacked is a harsh word) I know it's not yours but our wonderful media.
Sure NSW only won 1 of 5 under him but I'm sure he gave his all.
Maybe the Titans could pick him up?
Kevvie Walters seems to want to stay with QLD origin.
So it's anyones guess who will end up at the Titans.

Giddy Folks

I believe the Broncos will turn last nights embarrassment into a premiership.
They played terrible right from the outset, forcing a pass that did not need to be thrown. Very uncharacteristic of the Broncos, I am not their biggest fan but I can see the GF being between Melbourne and Brisbane, Brisbane to win in a close won.

christine's picture

Mark Yes your right sacked is a harsh word but both articles I've now read stated so & there is another article here below on the thinkers website that says dumped which is also poor to say , I wonder what jarryd will have to say about that ? ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

I got the sarcasm Steel, but lets think about the last 6 minutes of the game and especially the last 20 seconds. All we had to do was dive on the ball, not kick it, not bat at it, FALL ON THE FRIGGING BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH!!!! Right, good on the Broncos playing football til the death, and very very very very happy with the result. Just like Brad a bit disappointed in the last 18 points we let in. Yes the Broncos were their own worst enemy, and that interference in that try that the Broncos scored by my books should have resulted a sin binning. Its a professional foul and needs to be dealt as such. But as the Thinker said and I agree twice they have met in the last five weeks and both times both teams have produce the game of the round. Neither side can hang their heads as it always takes two to produce a great game.

mark ashford's picture

Tigerholic
I'm amazed by your comment, amazed but intrigued.
Are you just taking the p**s?
If not what happens when the Broncs meet the Eels again in the finals?
Getting flogged twice in 5 weeks doesn't bode well.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Just read your last comment. Sounds like your not entirely happy with the Eels performance.
I must confess I only watched the first half (Broncs getting flogged so it was off to bed) A 50 odd 30 odd scoreline in the NRL today is most unusual.
Anyway lots of posters have called this for an upset round so lets see what happens tonight.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Chris
Don't know what Jarryd would say about Lauries demise as I doubt any future coach would pick him.
As a Qlder I hope they do.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Mark

Not being sarcastic at all, just a feeling that a team that gets flogged as the Broncos did last night seem to do well soon after. A bit like clearing the cobwebs from the car when it has been running a bit rough, a bit of a tune up and the way you go.

Did you see the emotionless expressions on Wayne Bennet's face, is he really a good coach. I think he is past it, the Broncos need to move on without him but that can come after they win this year's title. I could be wrong though.

Darius needs to stop whingeing to the Refs after each decision is made, last night at one point he almost stopped playing the ball so he could have a cry to the ref, that is not teaching the kids what sport is all about.

Anyway, have a great weekend.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I'm over the moon Mark, to put 50 points on any team let alone one who won 54-0 a few weeks before is great. It's just my work crossing over into my passion. Great win now what rough edges need to be knocked off. But that last try it was so unnecessary, with some desperation we would of kept the score to 28.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Tiger
Wayne has always hated post match media scrums.
As probably all loosing coaches do and why wouldn't they.
The Semi try where he propelled the ball forward and was awarded was interesting. I have seen that called back so many times it's not funny.
Also 4 in the tackle, an obvious strip, the ball comes loose and a Eels player grabs the ball and scores. Broncs blow up but no help from the refs.
Darius is the captain and allowed to question decisions.
Did anyone look at the Eels never behind the 10?
I'm not making excuses, the best team won.
But beware a wounded Broncs team when it comes to finals.

Come on Cowboys you can beat Tigers

Baggy_Gee's picture

It's been an amazing first two games 160 points in 160 minutes of football.

Mary S's picture

Hi 'a' - they did it. Sheer grit and determination is alive and well in the Cowboys team!!
Cheers, Mary

a's picture

Yeah Looks like Cowboys will be playing finals after all

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning everyone - hope u r all well.
Frosty up this way this morning.

Pabdul - where r u mate?
You haven't been heard of since last Saturday, 1 week ago and you haven't tipped this round.
Hope u r ok, big game this week with Sharks.

Gotta go Bro's - catch up later. Yes, I'll slip a couple in the batting this week, but that's footy and tipping. Took Tigers last night, they had it in their hand, if they wanted it, but artistic Cowboys came home.
Tigers fell away in the last 1/4 of the second half, like as though someone yelled out from the sideline, that they got $50k to throw it.

Credit to injury ravaged Cows, they played well and believed in themselves, that they could do it.

Cheers all and have a nice day.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes 'a', they played well in second half. Catch up to there, it was.

BigPeteBx's picture

Correct there Mary,
They travelled down south, as well.

The Walkin Dude's picture

Tough game to watch on Thursday. Was still optimistic until the Eels ran over just before the half. Eels much more deserving on the day.

Good to see the Cowboys win a grinder. They'll have to play that way from here on out if they want their season to last longer than a fortnight..should be a good game next weekend.

Anyone else think Darius has had a poor season? Three tries all year and missed tackles galore.

Baggy_Gee's picture

James Robert's was badly stood up in defence on bot those long range sami tries. As much as I'm not a fan of Darius because he does rack the cue during the game, if your fullback is beaten trying to stop a ling range try the other 12 players have let him down before that chance.

a's picture

Who do you think Cowboys will play the finals if they make it I think it will be Panthers

mark ashford's picture

Just heard the Dogs beat the Titans 26/14 on the Gold Coast.
Highlight of the game was our favourite player Hayne throwing a forward pass around 5 metres forward (according to the callers)
Bet the Titans board was happy with that.

mark ashford's picture

"a", Tailspin & Mary S
Terrific win by the Cowboys last night in Sydney.
Pity my Broncos didn't show that sort of grit Thursday night.
We meet next Thursday in Townsville...who will win?
Loved seeing JT in the coaches box really excited as the boys won.
Don't like Woods but thought he had a great game.
Tigers should get a win next week over the Warriors.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Looking at the ladder predictor, if Manly and the Panthers get up this weekend that's game over for the chasing pack. Both teams in 7th and 8th will be on 30 points and the chase will have a maximum of 26 points. So in reality I'd be happy to call the top 8 cemented in. In the paper thin chance the Warriors have on knocking of Manly, and the panthers losing to the Dragons, is the only way to upset this. The big one is Sharks vs Roosters this evening, if the Sharks get up then the best the BOYS can really get is 5th, if the Roosters get the win then we get to finish top 4 and the Sharks fall back to 6th. Come on the Roosters.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Have you had a good look at Sami recently?
He is pure muscle attached to amazing speed.
If he ran at me I'd jump over the stadium to get out of his way.
Great pity ( for the Eels) he's off overseas next year...to French Rugby???
Is he still going?
As a Broncs fan I'll be happy to see him gone.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yes he is going, he wants to come back and be one of the BOYS again, hard for me to welcome him back with open arms, especially if a young guy steps up to take his spot. But that said he might suffer from the Jared Hayne problem and the NRL tells him where he is going. Love the guy but I agree with you Mark, no way in hell would I try to stop him unless someone paid me very good money, 1 followed by three o's is not enough maybe five 0's. I can think of several right side defensive units that will be happy to see him boarding that plane next year.

Steel Panther's picture

Mark...& Hayne kicked one out on the full or should that be fool. He looked disinterested pretty much all game. Hardly ran just catch & pass. Poor Ash Taylor passed to one of the Morris twins under his own sticks for a gift of a try to the Dogs. One of the biggest brain explosions I've seen in a long time...

mark ashford's picture

Hi Steel
I think we should feel a bit for the Titans with such a disrupting player as Hayne in there.
Half time in Melbourne I think it's Storm 36 Souths Nil.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Brutal score last time I checked it was only 12 nil.

Steel Panther's picture

I'm watching the game guys & all I can say is the Storm are on absolute fire. Clinical first half. Hard to see any other team in the same league as Melbourne. The football they play is a pleasure to watch!!!! On the other channel the Wallabies are giving it to the All Blacks!!!

Steel Panther's picture

It's 54 nil now in the 58th minute!!

Steel Panther's picture

Try scoring frenzy for the Storm. 11 tries with the wingers getting 3 a piece. 64-6 final score.

a's picture

Looks like Storm will win the grand final

mark ashford's picture

Steel
Watched the wallabies and listened to the Storm.
happy for Storm but gutted for the wallabies.
They had it for so long.
Yeah, who will beat Storm?

Baggy_Gee's picture

Wow, the BOYS might end up playing the Storm week 1 with a top 4 finish. As long as they don't believe the hype and lose to the Rabbits.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Mark...yea it was a tough loss for the Wallabies. You've never beaten the ABs until the final whistle. I'm not a big fan of the other rugby code but living here it's hard to avoid as the All Blacks get extensive coverage in the media. You can't say they don't deserve it though being such a champion side. I only wish the Warriors showed the same professionalism & diehard spirit.

Had intended going to the Warriors Manly game this afternoon but the weather has turned a bit ugly. Looks like it will be a wet track.

Baggy_Gee's picture

With 20 to go do the warriors have the ability to close out Manly Steel?

Mary S's picture

Maybe the wet track Steel spoke of is getting to Manly Baggy! 14 each and 13mins to go - different to what I thought it might be at this stage.

The Thinker's picture

Manly to miss the top eight I say. Goodness, they were in contention for a top two finish not so long ago.

Steel Panther's picture

Golden point Manly win with a DCE field goal!!!! Massive escape by the Sea Eagles

a's picture

But Manly came back to win

The Thinker's picture

...or maybe not

oh the Warriors....what a team you are. Supporting this team must be so darn hard.
