Round one selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Jubilee Oval

It's rather clever of the NRL, I think, to take what many feel is one of the weaknesses of the competition (players switching from one club to the next and the next again) and use it as the focus of the season campaign launch (I've added the video on this page for those that haven't seen it yet). The actual football kicks off with one such switch, as Ben Hunt takes on his former club for the first time. Safe to say he'll be under the spotlight on the night, but he's spent more time under the spotlight than most. While it hasn't gained as many headlines, the signing of James Graham could prove just as valuable to the Red V. He brings a work ethic and an attitude that can only bolster what is already one seriously serious pack of forwards. It's this pack of forwards that has many tipping the Dragons for a top eight finish and a win in round one. While this Dragons pack scares the jigglies out of me, I'm in the fortunate position of being able to watch the Broncos train in their brand spanking new training facility from my verandah (Sarah Palin might be able to see Russia from her house, but I can see Sam Thaiday get out of the pool and try and shoot three pointers on a half court in his pineapple budgie smugglers). Let me tell you, this Broncos side is the opposite of tiny (and Thaiday isn't playing in the NBL in this lifetime or the next). I'm writing this before their team for round one is named but the starting pack I'm expecting to see weighs in at a whopping 654 kilograms. That amount of size won't scare the jigglies out of anyone in the Dragons pack, but there might be enough mass there to make this a contest. If we have a contest up front, the Broncos backs look superior, and more settled, on paper. That Dragons spine of McInnes, Hunt, Widdup and Dufty could be unstoppable, but it might take them a little while to put it all together.

Important note: Ms Thinker nearly ran over Jordan Kahu this morning. He was visibly shaken (a lot like me whenever I'm in the car with Ms Thinker), so there's some chance his kicking game might be off).

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Dragons 34 defeated Broncos 12

Newcastle Knights vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights have been one of the more active clubs in the battle for new recruits..and they needed to be. They've finished in 16th place three seasons in a row – you'd need a very good time machine to find the last team that racked up three successive wooden spoons. I've no doubt they'll be better this season, but I think the Sea Eagles will be better too (and they were 6th last year...not 16th). The Knights lost 8 of their first 9 games last season, and it may take a while for the new recruits and the old guard to come together. The late withdrawal of Danny Levi won't help matters on that front either. The Sea Eagles have a settled spine and while they lost in round one last season, that defeat to the Eels was one of the best games of the round. A similar performance on Friday night and the points are theirs.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Knights 19 defeated Sea Eagles 18

North Queensland Cowboys vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Sharks, on paper, have a side that could beat everyone. That said, age catches up with us all, and Paul Gallen and Luke Lewis aren't as young and attractive as they used to be. I also have a few doubts on the fitness of Andrew Fifita this early in the season, but all three of them could take to the field this weekend and make me look an utter fool. They'll need to be good though, as the Cowboys were too strong for the Sharks in the finals last year (despite the protests of a few) and that Cowboys side didn't include Thurston, Matt Scott or Jordan McLean. That's two Kangaroo-level prop forwards the Cowboys have added to their line-up this season. Their contribution is likely to make the contribution of Jason Taumalolo all the more dynamic. There's no shortage of backup firepower either with Hess, Cooper, Lowe, Bolton and Asiata. The Cowboys have been turning their home ground into quite the fortress in recent times. More of the same in 2018.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Sharks 14

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

What a sweet sweet draw the Chooks have in season 2018. They will barely leave Sydney all year and most of the teams they're playing twice didn't make the top eight last season. Underestimate them at your peril – given the team they can put on the park I don't think many will. The Tigers have been going through a rebuilding period, focussing on the young talent coming through the system. They've turned that on their head somewhat, with the recruitment of Benji Marshall, Josh Reynolds and Ben Matulino. Will it work? I have my doubts.

Verdict – Roosters by 16

Result – Tigers 10 defeated Roosters 8

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Perth Stadium

In 2014 I asked NASA to run the ruler over the New Zealand Warriors and get back to me with a legitimate explanation. I haven't heard back. In the meantime I have learned to live by the following mantra – you don't need to understand the Warriors, you just need to understand that they will let you down. The Rabbitohs could be a surprise packet this season, and forcing the Warriors to travel halfway around the planet to play this game in Perth has proven to be a successful formula. Bunnies for mine, and welcome back GI.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result – Warriors 32 defeated Rabbitohs 20

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Perth Stadium

The second game of the double-header at the new Perth Stadium sees the defending premiers taking on one of the fallen giants of the NRL. I'm struggling to get my head around what's happening at Belmore, and I'm not sure if those inside the club understand it either. Usually the ever-reliable Storm tip themselves, and I am still tipping them, but we must be mindful that the Bulldogs are playing this game on the back of the memorial to club great Steve Folkes. Their current coach is well-placed to get this side to pull together and give us a performance for the ages. If James Graham and Josh Reynolds were still there I'd actually tip them, because that's two players you want in your side under these circumstances. But they're not, and without them I think they will fall short. No Slater for the Storm who will play his 300th game elsewhere. A purple victory, but this could be a more interesting contest than most expect.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 36 defeated Bulldogs 18

Penrith Panthers vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Panthers Stadium

If the rumours are true Phil Gould and Anthony Griffin are yelling at each other a lot. What's more likely is that Gould is yelling and Griffin is mumbling under his breath when Gould storms out. In any case, the trial form is poor and what was meant to be a golden period for the Penrith Panthers seems a way off yet. Gould has spent a lot of money trying to build this club..and he's cranky. He's going to be even crankier on Sunday when his side gets dusted up by another Western Sydney team with more off-field issues than Barnaby Joyce.

Verdict – Eels by 14

Result – Panthers 24 defeated Eels 14

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The Titans are competing with the Commonwealth Games, the Suns, and a whole lot of surfing beaches for the hearts, minds and wallets of the locals on the glitter strip. They can get things off to a bright start under their new coach with an upset win over the Raiders on Sunday. That spine of Peats, Taylor, Elgey and Gordon looks promising and the addition of Arrow and Cartwright in the second row won't hurt either. There's no shortage of talent on show from the Raiders either. Total points overs if the wet weather clears on the weekend.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Titans 30 defeated Raiders 28

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, it's great to be back in 2018 for the NRL season. My tips for this week are:

Dragons by 4- I'm not going against my team here. This round last year we demolished one of the favourites the Panthers in what was a major upset. I think we can start off this season with a win too. Ben Hunt vs the Broncos is going to be interesting. Also expecting a blinder from Graham who isn't the focus going into this game.

Knights by 8- Knights to start off this season with a win. Not sure how the salary cap scandals have affected Manly during the off-season and coming into this game, but I'm going with the Knights with the upset win at home.

Cowboys by 10- The Cowboys will have a magnificent season this year and will make Townsville a fortress of theirs this season so I'm going with the Cowboys but the experienced Sharks could upset here.

Roosters by 14- Tigers have some great recruits but how will they go in the first game? Will they gel? I guess we'll find that out on Saturday afternoon. The Roosters I predicted will dominate this season and I'm still sticking towards that so the Roosters to start off with a big win here.

Rabbitohs by 6- Rabbitohs to continue the Warriors' woes in Perth here. Great to see Inglis back as well.

Storm by 8- Storm too good for the Dogs here.

Eels by 2- Going with the outsiders in this one, but in terms of how their season will go, the outsiders the Eels here won't be outsiders. Eels in a cracking game. Also expecting good season from these two teams.

And finally... Raiders by 12- Raiders to beat the Titans here. Titans will have a poor season this year and it starts here.

Awesome. Good luck to all with your teams this season also good luck to all with your tips this season. Bring the Nrl season of 2018 on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Esra Star's picture

My heart is with the Titans this weekend, but, the Raiders have been flying under the radar so far this pre season so i have tipped against the Tits. I will probably live to regret it. sigh!

Esra Star's picture

Sports bet has the Panthers $1.85 to beat the Eels $1.95.

You are both registered as tipsters...welcome aboard.

Registrations are now closed for this season. Apologies to those who are keen but missed out. I have to draw a line somewhere and the line is drawn. Feel free to post comments and your tips in the comments section if you want to. Those that do will definitely get priority next year.

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and a random prize for one more tipster that went to the effort of tipping all season. I'll post details on what those prizes are once I've raided the piggy bank.

Could I please join the tipping competition PLEASE? I was a huge contributor last season but because I joined this community after round 16, I was far too late to enter the competition then. I hope I make it this round.
Btw, here are my predictions;

Storm
Broncos
Rabbitohs
Knights- this will be a definite shocker
Eels
Cowboys
Raider
Roosters

MGM's picture

Thanks for having me in the comp.
In the interests of good etiquette I should declare that I have changed a couple of my tips , they are now :-
Dragons
Eagles
Cowboys
Roosters
Rabbitohs
Storm
Eels
Raiders
At this early stage, maybe rather than going looking for the upsets it might be better to let them find me !!

Baggy_Gee's picture

An interesting stat for anyone betting on first try scorer in the Eels games, out of 24 rounds we scored first 16 time or 66%. 2 trys inside 1 minute, 3 inside 3 minutes, 2 inside 4 minutes, 1 inside 5 minutes and the remaining 8 outside 6 minutes. That said gamble sensibly and bet on the BOYS to get up each week.
Dragons - First first game of the season, so no idea. Not sure how good McCullogh will be, but he is a Dalby boy and they are tough. Not sold on the Thaiday prop gamble, and as someone said the Dragons already have game miles in their legs.
Manly - As most here know I really think Nathan Brown has done great things with the Knights and with a few seasons under his belt should really be coach of the year. I don't like how a few of the Knights have been shafted to buy in new guys but the team looks good. That said we blew them out of the water in the back of each half and Manly should be able to do the same. Will laugh like a drain if the Beach Boys lose though.
Cowboys - Based on the current weather up here, it'll be muggy after 2 days of rain and 30 degrees, not sure if the Sharks can do it. JT being back will help lift a team that knows the conditions will be on their side.
Roosters - With their team it feels slightly like 2009 all over again. At least there is no boats. I think the Tigers are either bluffing with the Benji injury report or have seriously dropped the ball for a few more bums on seats. But its nice to see a few of the old guard have gone home. Wonder if Benji will throw a cut out in to row 4 of the grandstand like his first game for the Dragons.
Rabbits - Like the Boss said last season he won't tip the Warriors again until there is good reason. There might be hope but I'll wait for the bandwagon to start before I look at anyone but their opposition.
Store - Nothing in the Bulldogs side grabs me, especially the halves combination, backline seems to be a bit muddled as well. Will did a good job at fullback last season but I am not the coach.
Eels - It has been said that if you add up all the players who have left the Panthers in the last few years and add Ivan Cleary as the coach you would have a pretty damn good side. On paper they seem to be a damn good side in their own right, but factional nonsense within the office is never a good sign. Look how the BOYS went with a bunch of monkeys running their office for years. We played well as a team vs the Knights and no-one over played their hand or tried to be a one man show. This is a good thing as the top teams do their job on the field and do it well.
Titans - I think the lack of travel, the wet weather training they have done and the fact the Nathan Peats is a ledgend, should get the Titans into the 8 for the first round at least. I don't like a half on the bench and think as far as a game breaker goes Blake Austin should be on the field for 80 minutes. But who knows, Croker will kick them from anywhere, Rapana and Leilua have a great combination, 50/50 for me on this game.

TigerGirl's picture

Thanks Tigerholic

Esra Star's picture

Baggy,,does that Eels stat include Radrada's try's? That may make a difference.

manyana's picture

WOW!!! Thank you Mr. Thinker. I'll now put on my tipping hat, & think about my tips while I walk on the treadmill. My tips will be in later today. Once again Thank You.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Actually he only scored first once or twice, and never really in the first 10 minutes. Our total tries scored will be a hell of a lot lower, and the fact that last year the Panthers outscored us on average by about .5 of a point per game, and let in .3 of a point less per game does point to a close one. But if none of the BOYS try to be the hero, we can do the the Panthers what we did to the Knights.

Esra Star's picture

I am a Bronco's supporter, but i grew up in Granville in the 60's and have a soft spot for the slipperies.I think they will do well this year, maybe even top 4 finish.

Sa-wat-dee krup,

First up, just wanna say a big “thank you” to the Boss and his Mighty Helper in organizing this year’s activities once again. Legends! Both of you!

A big “hey! hey!” to all the old faces from last year and a warm welcome to all the new tippers on here as well. Feeling “primed and ready” for this year and fingers crossed I can improve on last year’s somewhat average performances. Seeing as this is Round 1 and I have absolutely no idea how the pre-season games went, I’ll keep the tips short’n’sweet. OK, let’s get this juggernaut rolling…

Broncos - no idea why, just got a feeling.

Manly - might be closer than some may think.

Cowboys - should be alright at home (maybe).

Roosters - go you BBB!

Rabbitohs - form in Perth is pretty good and Warriors’ isn’t. Simples!

Storm - seriously, you need to ask?

Panthers - crazy I know. Newbie’s roughie of the week.

Raiders - could be another close one, not sure.

Getting’ excited about the double-header on Saturday over here. Finally get my chance to check out our new stadium. Woo-Hoo! Look for me on the big screen if they televise it over East. I’ll be the most handsomest bloke there and I’ll be wearing my Roosters beanie! Bang-a-Rang!

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points!

Now as some of you may remember, I usually sign off with a ponderous question each week. Well, Newbie is goin’ all out crazy this year and is gonna leave you all with his “Song of the Week” instead. It will be a bit of a mixed bag but you are guaranteed these songs are some of my faves. Some bring back fond memories, some bring back tears and some are just plain awesome. Cannot guarantee everyone will appreciate my highly cultured sense of taste in music but hey, just tryin’ to bring a little bit of extra class your way (ha-ha, only kidding). Each to their own I say. Having said all that, here’s this week’s “Song of the Week”. Get down!

Hey pabdul
Your a man of much experience
In your honest opinion how do you rate Souths this year?
Most had them in their bottom 8 including you just wondering

pabdul's picture

Gday Demon
I didn’t want to make comments this season but because your Irish, started a fun comp and one of your relatives played in the 1975 grand final I will make an exception.
Not having Souths in my 8 will probably come back and bite me as they probably will just scrape in.
They have the attack to put 20 points on every team but can they defend it they’re a bit ac/dc meaning attack credible /defence crap but I like their new coach and if they can complete their sets they have a backline that can score from anywhere.
They do lack genuine depth and if they loose some big names it will get scarier that being in a car with mrs thinker.
If their best 3 players stay fit all season they will have a BIG year
Burgess
Inglis
Gagai

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not my style Newbie, but a good song none the less. Thanks for broadening my horizons musically and geographically. Pabdul, i think you could add the roosters as well to that lack of depth. Hope both teams don't get shafted because of a massive run of injuries, but that also is for the entire competition, need to remember that these are people and playing is their livelihood.

The Annoying Devil's picture

Thanks pabdul fair call
True Baggy I can’t remember the roosters ever winning without Freddie
In all clubs you lose 1 or 2 marquee players your seasons as good as over eg if Widdop went down tonight and is out for a number of weeks the dragons you think couldn’t make the 8

Bet Wayne wasn't smiling last night after Broncos lost 34-12. Great result for all Dragons fans though. I was't either (smiling that is), as I thought Broncos would do better.

I only saw snippets of the match as we were too busy moving furniture to higher areas of the house and cars to higher ground in preparation for Ingham flooding. This morning we were inundated with water - about 1 metre through the house (fortunately 2 story).

The floods may make a huge difference to the attendance at the Cowboys/Sharks match as all roads are closed and there are a lot of Cowboys supporters around here.
Cheers to all
Mary

Tailspin's picture

I think you would be right Mary S, That was absolutely woeful from the Broncos. They are going to be in for a very long season I think. Go the Cowboys tonight.

Esra Star's picture

Broncos lacked any cohesion and talk was pretty much non existent. I don't think Boyd is captain materiel.

Wow!!! 2 competition points for the Knights & Tigers. This will boost their 2018 season campaign, didn't see that coming... Go Doggies for a win too..

Enjoy your footy..

Cheers..

Terrible effort by the Broncs but well done the Dragons.
Wayne believes the Broncs are invincible...this was his "wake up"
NEWBIE interesting song, enjoyable but not great.
Do you know "take a load off Annie" or "the weight" song has two names.
performed by "the band" in the USA but better by an Aussie band
apologies I can't recall who it was, but it was better.
Sometimes we do it better here in AUS.
