Round seventeen selections

Melbourne Storm vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Thursday night – AAMI Park

Both teams lose plenty of troops to game three of Origin but the Storm look better placed to deal with it. James Graham is a collosus but he is just one man, and most of his usual forward pack won't be there with him. Ben Hunt was 'dropped', but stays on the bench for Queensland. The Dragons pack has been one of their key strengths this season, while the Storm will lose just the one back-rower to Origin duty (Kaufusi). The Dragons don't have a great record in Melbourne at the best of times. I'm no Charles Dickens, but this looks the worst of times for the Dragons to be facing off against the purple machine. The Storm get an opportunity to peg back the lead of the premiership front-runner, and they'll take it.

Verdict – Storm by 13

Result – Storm 52 defeated Dragons 30

Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – Penrith Stadium

Is Hook about to get hooked? The Panthers are undertaking the dreaded mid-year review even though they are in the top four. Some may see that as an over-reaction, but their last two games have been ordinary, their one point win over the Raiders was fortuitous, and 11 of their 15 games this season have been against teams outside the top eight. There aren't many teams in the top eight that look like they could slide out of finals contention from here, but the Panthers are a candidate. They'll be without much of their playmaking prowess on Friday night too, with Cleary, Maloney and Peachey on Origin duty. Meanwhile the Warriors are near enough to full strength, and showed enough last week against the Sharks to suggest they can get the job done here.

Verdict – Warriors by 8

Result – Panthers 36 defeated Warriors 4

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Belmore Sports Ground

The Bulldogs showed some of that traditional Bulldogs spirit last week with a thumping win over the Knights. Unfortunately their best player in that game was Klemmer (who carted the ball for 200 metres and gave his all), and he won't be playing this weekend. The Raiders are losing plenty of close games this season, but games are (usually) won by teams that score the most points. Only the top two teams on the ladder have scored more points than the Raiders this season, while only two teams have scored less than the Bulldogs this season ( the Eels and the Tigers). Without Klemmer they'll have even less opportunities to be in a position to score points, and the Bulldogs need more opportunities to score than most.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Raiders 32 defeated Bulldogs 28

Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The Titans probably can't make the top eight this season, but they're good enough to create nuisance value for every team they come up against. They lose a fair chunk of their engine room to Origin with Wallace and Arrow suiting up for QLD, although it looks like Ryan James will now be available. The Broncos lose Wallace and McCullough which weakens them in the middle and they also lose Oates – his runs and yards early in the tackle count will be missed too. I'm sticking with the Broncos who have plenty to play for and plenty of big game experience to draw on despite the absence of their Origin players. This should be tight though, and given the weather and timeslot I think this is the game of the round.

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result – Broncos 34 defeated Titans 0

Coach Potato's picture

Is it possible to have two teams finish 40+?

Baggy_Gee's picture

I was marvelling at the points being equal to the minutes. Been a while since that has been the case. 76 points 74 minutes. Good stuff.

Mary S's picture

My tipping prayers were answered - wow 52/30 in Storms favour.

Would that be one of the highest scoring games in NRL?

Coach Potato's picture

A team scores 30 and damages their for / against by 22 !?

Pretty sure that’s never happened.

Coach Potato's picture

Wow. Enough to push Souths up to 1st.

a's picture

Wow Broncos scored 34 last year and lost by 18

Coach Potato's picture

Gus said during the call of the game that no team has had 50 scored against and won the comp that year. Fed to his earpiece by fellow Panther, Middleton I’m guessing. Whether it means the Dragons are already gone or not, is a great fun stat.

Made me worried how Panthers had faired in the against stakes this year, although was pretty sure they hadn’t had a 50. Here is a list of most scored against to least this year.

Titans - 54 (v Dragons R3)
Eels - 54 (v Sea Eagles R2)
Dragons - 52 (v Storm R17)
Warriors - 50 (v Storm R8)
——————————————-
Knights - 48 (v Sharks R12)
Tigers - 48 (v Raiders R15)
Sea Eagles - 44 (v Eels R7)
Raiders - 42 (v Rabbitohs R7)
Sharks - 40 (v Dragons R6)
Broncos - 38 (v Sea Eagles R10)
Bulldogs - 36 (v Storm R1)
Storm - 34 (v Dragons R9)
Cowboys - 33 (v Panthers R4)
Rabbitohs - 32 (v Warriors R1)
Panthers - 32 (v Roosters R15)
Roosters - 30 (v Warriors R4)

Thanks for the providing the spark to check this one Gus, (ahead of tonight’s game that is)

Hey Thinker if traffic was big when I was around ‘15/‘16, then less 2017, and even less now - sounds like the people left for Rugby same time as me.

Else, as I’ve only been back a month or so, could be a bit harsh to judge the 17 rounds as my doing.

Coach Potato's picture

If Broncos can beat Gold Coast that will make it just 4 points separating 1st and 8th.

That’s a red hot drag race to the finals if you ask me.

Morning Mark....yes my friends live in the RSL village. They are the parents of my best mate who now lives in Sydney. They have been in OZ for probably 15 years now with maybe the last 10 on Bribie. I was quite taken by the Sunshine Coast and came away thinking "I could retire here one day" as the lifestyle is great. Never ever thought of leaving NZ but who knows!!

Steel Panther's picture

Coach....good luck to your Panthers tonight. Agree...I wonder which teams will show up?? Warriors have surprisingly been better away from home this season but will miss Harris. I think Blair is back so that may help if he doesn't give away silly penalties. We are lucky to strike your team during Origin and need Johnson to get more involved if we want to win. I rate Penrith to be there at the pointy end of the season and was surprised that they turned in such a poor effort last week against Manly. Maloney looks tired.

The Annoying Devil's picture

It’s true no full strength team has never won the comp letting in 50 points
But with your best players missing that stat goes out the window

Brad S's picture

What an entertaining game to start the round.

Also amusing to wake up and see the Broncos are trying lure Ivan and Nathan Cleary on a package deal. As much as I would love this to happen, I can’t help but think it’s another rubbish story with no substance.

Mary S's picture

Found my answer to my previous question -"Would that be one of the highest scoring games in NRL?"

Some very impressive points scored on
https://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/competitions/nrl/records.html
with 91 points St George May 11th, 1935 - St George vs. Canterbury with 19 tries scored in the match!

Coach Potato's picture

# Panthers throw a new halves combo 10 games, and 1 game respectively at Johnson. I know they can play, as they have starred during their 1st grade appearances. Will see how they go on their own now though. Luck might be more a factor than people’s wish for a good game.

# stats are stats and sometimes don’t tell the whole story I agree, but can sometimes be a handy indicator for reasons unknown

# a, baggy and Pete - the soccer quarter finals kick off at Cinderella o’clock. Tips on by then:
URU v FRA,
BRA v BEL,
RUS v CRO,
SWE v ENG.

The Annoying Devil's picture

Gus brought up the same stat last year when the dragons put 50 points on manly
The difference is the dragons are coming first
A full strength dragons has already beaten Melbourne
And the Grand Final is played in Sydney

The Annoying Devil's picture

On paper the clearys going to any club sounds tempting but to me it’s like moving into the in laws after a while it has its consequences
Though both are good at what they do
I think they have more chance winning the comp under separate roofs
All it takes is a bit of favouritism or a player not getting on with Nathan or Ivan dropping a player that Nathan thinks should be in the side or Nathan not getting on with his dad the list goes on
The best coaches can seperate being a coach from being a mate when it matters. seperating being
a coach from a father would be more testing
I hope they prove me wrong

Here's my Russia tops

I personally have had a problem with a father and son working for competing NRL clubs, on occasion taking each other on in club games, but who knows if it may one day be a semi or further.

It feels like such a conflict of interest to have each other’s organisation’s intellectual property potentially floating around the loungeroom / breakfast table / back verandah.

Even Ivan’s fatherly advice for son seems to undermine his role at the Tigers.

A bit like Brooks and Moses sharing a house and playing for opposing teams, even on the same field a couple of times a year.

It’s obviously fine with the NRL, but that’s no indication that it must be above board.

The Annoying Devil's picture

Well put coach conflict of interest
I believe we are agreed

The Annoying Devil's picture

I guess then John and Martin Lang in 2003 defies logic?

Coach Potato's picture

Cmon devil there must a word out somewhere. If not, cheers.

Coach Potato's picture

I think same team same intellectual property of same organisation. I think that’s ok.

Coach Potato's picture

2003. Correct weight.

Coach Potato's picture

.. plus Martin was hardly able to communicate verbally anyway.

The Annoying Devil's picture

Martin did stick his neck out for his father....literally

Baggy_Gee's picture

That neck got whiplash so hard that I felt it watching at home.

Brad S's picture

I think you're both on the money with yours points TAD and Coach.

Individually they have both done really well this season but working together could have serious complications for them as a family and a team. Especially with Nathan still being young and them two living under the same roof. Tense times around the dinner table if Nathan's form drops and he gets a tap on the shoulder from dad.

Baggy_Gee's picture

URU v FRA A
BRA v BEL H
RUS v CRO D
SWE v ENG A

The Annoying Devil's picture

The clearys dinner table
Ivan : Nathan can you pass me the ketchup ?
Nathan : only if you drop Tedesco .

Baggy_Gee's picture

Probably more like
Nathan: You'd only drop it Dad.

Coach Potato's picture

Seriously, they must must must watch the footy on TV together. It’s a fathers and sons thing. Things must come up such as set plays, defensive reads etc all of which would be a clear conflict of interest to discuss as they are from opposing sides.

christine's picture

can anyone please answer a ? for me is ryan james playing for titans this week or is he in camp for origin. ???

The Annoying Devil's picture

Even if they don’t team up together surely they can still socialise by kicking a few goals down the local park and ask passers by who they think has the squarer jaw.

Coach Potato's picture

No contest I would have thought. Even Roger Ramjet is jealous of the Cleary son.

christine's picture

I'm changing another tip of mine so my tips now read as -
dragons
warriors
raiders
broncos
I know I promised I wouldn't make more changes but seeing I'm not on the tipping ladder it doesn't really matter anyway ...

Coach Potato's picture

You forgot to change the Warriors christine. The Panther pups are ready to roar.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker/TLH sorry to be a whinger but I'm still getting all posts to my junk box.
Nice to see everyone getting along, seems like the happy family it should be here.

Coach Potato's picture

Probably says it all about what we write, mark

mark ashford's picture

Coach is it true Peachy is going to the Titans next year?
Another one of your best and now an origin player.
What is going on with your retention committee?
If it's a cap thing then surely someone else should have gone.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Christine Pick n stick your costing me a fortune every time you change your bets my Sportsbet account in tatters somehow I've laid bets on all 8 teams this week.

Mary S's picture

Hi Christine,
Ryan James shows on the official team for Titans this week.
Nothing so far in NRL late mail, to indicate any change.
Cheers
Mary

Mary S's picture

You sure it's not a whimper you're hearing from Panthers Coach???
Cheers,
Mary

christine's picture

Rocket
You can't have I haven't tipped Penrith yet & i'm aloud to change my mind & second guess myself i'm not on the tipping ladder & now you know why but believe it or not when i'm in a comp I don't actually change my tips ...

christine's picture

Mary s
Thanks for your response to my ? I appreciate it . Rocket seriously you follow my tips I hate to tell you but I follow yours so it looks like we are both up the creek without a paddle then but occasionally I do take one different from you to try to jag one you don't get ...

The Thinker's picture

Thanks for letting me know Mark

I will have to get TLH to dig deeper and rectify. Sorry about all the mail.

On a happier note, well done all on the friendly footy-chatting tone today.......it's a joy to be here again.

The Thinker's picture

I must admit I have a soft spot for Sam Thaiday...I wish there were more in the game like him.

One club, laced on boots for state and country, and barring an injury he will join the 300 club this season.

A great career....and it's only just begun.

Coach Potato's picture

I’m big and stupid enough to say sorry for misreading some posts as something it may not have actually been.

The harsh word I used is often appropriate to describe getting ganged up on by the power of numbers. Just that here, that may not have been the case. so happy to retract.

Also all good if people may have misunderstood me too, thinking I was long held as the problem, not just disguised in the form of quirky but acid wit in regards to sticking up for myself, and for those who were never good at standing up.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker, it's not a major problem. just a slight distraction.
You know what they say "happy wife...happy life"
So perhaps "happy site...happy....well..... we'll just keep our fingers crossed.
