Round twenty three selections

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

Successive Thursday night losses for the Broncos (against teams they should be beating) have seen one of the biggest teams in Australian sport drift from top four contender to the cusp of drop-out territory. A loss here and the Tigers could easily replace them in the top eight...and stay there. If their season isn't over, this next fortnight gives the Broncos an opportunity to redefine their season, but they probably need to defeat the Rabbits and the Chooks to convince any of us that they're back. They've had a season full of distractions, and those distractions haven't gone away. The Bunnies still look like contenders to me – their left edge has sparkled in attack but circumstances took their sparkle away last start. Despite that, they still only lost by 4 points to the premiership favourites. Inglis may return this week, although I suspect he won't. If he plays and he's ready they win. If he doesn't...they'll win anyway.

p.s. I could grubber kick to the Broncos sparkly new headquarters from my joint. If I happen to see the Rabbitohs coach touring the facilities on Friday I'll let you know  :-)

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result – Broncos 38 defeated Rabbitohs 18

Manly Sea Eagles vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Lottoland

While the Rabbitohs coach is (potentially) checking out Red Hill, the Broncos coach might take a road trip down the M1 to have a look at the digs on the Gold Coast. Bennett would like the look of AJ Brimson, who has clearly emerged this season as a player with enormous potential. The Titans should secure his tenure as soon as they can, or someone else will. With both teams in limboland this season (outside of finals and wooden spoon contention) it's hard to get enthused about this game as a contest. Whichever team can find a way to get enthused about this contest should win. I'll take a punt that the Sea Eagles are that team. Why? It's their last game at Brookvale for the year. That's reason enough.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Titans 42 defeated Sea Eagles 34

Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – AAMI Park

If the Eels were in the top four they'd be close to premiership favourites on the back of that performance last weekend. A 93% completion rate, 40 points in attack, 4 points conceded and a Jarryd Hayne hat-trick...all against a team in the top four. A repeat of that sort of performance and they'll be winning again, and frustrated Eels fans will be asking where this team has been all season. Mind you, few fans know frustration like an Eels fan. Meanwhile the Storm have lost two games in a row, and I've pointed out many many times how rarely that happens. I have no idea how often they lose three games in a row, but I suspect the last time it happened was years ago. Strangely they got through the Origin period without a loss. I'm tipping them again, because they were very ordinary last weekend and almost won anyway. I expect Cameron Smith has had the kicking tee out all week, and he'll be better for it. The Eels are tied for last, but this is close to the game of the round.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 20 defeated Eels 4

Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Panthers Stadium

The Panthers could, if they were serious, cement a top four position with a big win here. Playing football from the kick-off would help. While their comebacks are very entertaining it's not a strategy to take into a finals campaign. The Knights might be in 11th place, but their points differential is the worst in the NRL...and by a very wide margin. That tells you that when they win they don't win by much, and when they lose they lose by plenty. I suspect they lose this game by plenty. The absence of James Maloney just means the Panthers won't leak as many points as they usually do.

Verdict – Panthers by 28

Result – Knights 20 defeated Panthers 12

Wests Tigers vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – Leichhardt Oval

This is a game where results earlier in the round can have a profound impact. The Tigers are two points behind the Broncos, and if the Broncos lose (likely) the Tigers can get their whiskers into the top eight with a win. For the Dragons, the three teams directly above them on the ladder will have already played, and all three are likely to win. That makes any hope of a top four finish for them less likely. If the Dragons aren't looking back they'll be looking forward, and the two teams directly below them on the ladder are likely to go past them if the Dragons lose. Sheesus McSneezus...where do they look?  The Tigers at Leichhardt for the last time this season, while the Dragons appear to be in a death spiral. Stripey cats it is.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result – Dragons 20 defeated Tigers 10

Cronulla Sharks vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

The Cowboys win over the Broncos last round must have felt almost like a grand final after what has been, I think, the Cowboys worst season in their history. I have doubts about them performing at that level again, particularly with Taumalolo unavailable. The Sharks can stay in the hunt for a top four berth with a win. Their last game at home was a loss to the Sea Eagles, but they won't be letting their fans down this time. Expect Valentine Holmes to have a big game against his next club :-)

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 28 defeated Cowboys 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

While a top four finish for the Warriors looks unlikely, they would love to get themselves into 5th or 6th and play their first final at home. I think they can, and they look like the only team outside the top four with the firepower to knock off the likely contenders. There's some suggestions that Tuivasa-Sheck is a smokey for the Dally M medal, but I think Issac Luke will steal too many points off him. They'll win this though...surely.

Verdict – Warriors by 14

Result – Bulldogs 27 defeated Warriors 26

Canberra Raiders vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

Few of you would be surprised to hear that the Roosters have conceded less points than any other team this season, but a few more of you would be surprised to hear that the 10th placed Raiders have scored more points than any other team this season. Seven of their ten losses this season have been by four points or less – they've been close, a lot, but they don't win the close games. Heading into this game they've lost four in a row, and they're facing a team that have won five in a row. It's taken the Chooks 22 rounds to get to the top of the ladder. I doubt they'll lose top spot this weekend.

Verdict – Roosters by 8

Result – Raiders 14 defeated Roosters 12

Panthers going down at home to the Knights now that's an upset

Tigers are now out of the finals unless there is a miracle

Rocket I wonder if Coach was in the stadium, or if Gould was there to watch the carnage. Bet Hook has a small grin on his face.

Baggy can't agree more it seems to take ages for the HELD call to go out. Sick of seeing the upright wrestle or a player being dragged 5 metres or more and thrown into touch. Even after HELD is called the wrestle continues with defenders hanging on to the tackled player.
Refs need to clean this up.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yes I agree, and after seeing Chambers effort on Hayne, well that's two we owe him, that and laying down last year. But we had them on the ropes and lacked the execution so it's all good. We'll hopefully get them next time.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy that's the beauty of this game there's always a next time.
Cows & Sharks locked up at 6 a piece half time.
Who wants it more?

mark ashford's picture

Sharks get a win over the Cows. Thought the refs were a bit hard on the Cows. A Fiffita is nothing more than a thug. He is the worst flopper in the NRL using his weight to hurt opposing players. If he wasn't playing in the NRL he'd be in a bikie gang somewhere hurting people.
Have a look at his off field record, starting fights at junior matches etc.
He's not what we want in the NRL.

After seeing the Sharks/Storm match last week, it was going to be a big ask for Cowboys to win tonight, I felt.
They put up a real gutsy performance and kept up the fight, but unfortunately, were not able to achieve the result they (or the fans) wanted.

I agree with you Mark on Andrew Fifita!!

Hopefully Cowboys beat Eels next week

Nice tipping this weekend Rocket. Well done!!

Hello Steely and hope u r well mate.
Not to be sorry. Manly has been their own worst enemies this season.
They certainly let that game get away on them, in the second half.
They tried to come back and did, but it was another of those performances, they've shown this year and couldn't last to the final whistle. Their last game at Brooky this season and many would have tipped a win. I did and they were more than embarrassing in that second stanza. Much like a V8 going into the pits and forgetting to turn the engine on, to get back onto the track.

The NRL Tipping this season, I will say again - "it's been all over the shop". Broncos knew they needed to win on Thursday night, they did and I tipped them, to do just that. They got into it from word go and deserved their win.

I was at presentation sports dinner last night and didn't see the progress scores on Tiges v Drags match. But I certainly heard it, when they won, as we had a couple of supporters on our table.

Keep well all and enjoy your Sunday.
Big Pete from early sun, partly cloudy and icy Bx Country

Good Sunday morning to you Mark A, as I've always known you as.
I said similar last year about players being dragged out over the sideline.
Makes the game look cheap, I detest it and the NRL needs to fix the rules up along with number of players in a tackle. Because you see players lunged upon, after being tackled, you see more than a required number, gang lashing a player. If it continues, the game will end up being wheelchair league. Gone are the Terry Randall boot lace tackle days, as players are able to stand up and offload, which Artie B would lovingly, truly appreciate. But we again ask ourselves the question of "when is a player tackle". Seems like Spartacus/Gladiator scenes and tackled, when the lions have eaten them.
Not Brisbane Lions mate!
Cheers Champ - Big Pete

Hi Steel Panther, you're still going well. Keep up the good work.
Well done to Rocket Ryan too.
I don't think that I could tip a winner even if there was only one team lol.

christine 's picture

Oh well that shows you what the season has been like for me after the dragons beat tigers currently on 2 / 6 so far this round & yet I have won three comps before , that's tipping for you ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Lachlan Lewis is handling the Warriors single handly. Wish it was the televised game it seems good end to end football.

Steel Panther's picture

Lewis's field goal to win it for the Doggies was a gem Baggy.

Steel Panther's picture

Good to hear from you Big Pete. Was thinking you've been a bit quiet lately. Hope you are well. Manly can only look towards next season now. Just hope they can sort the coaching situation out. The Warriors hardly flash today against the lowly Dogs.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Manyana...I'm hanging in there. I'll be a point closer to the top after this round but this weekend's top effort belongs to Rocket!!

christine 's picture

steel panther
Next week tigers play manly & it's a home game for tigers ...

manyana's picture

Yes, hats off to Rocket. But you're keeping up our (your) team averages, which is more than I can say.
Cheers, Manyana.

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Christine. Hope you are going ok. Tigers will be deflated after that possible season ending loss to the Dragons yesterday although the Warriors loss today still leaves the door slightly ajar. Who knows the head space of Manly but any team can win on the day especially after some of the results we've seen this weekend!! Take care.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Cheers Steel Bulldogs hang in there again Warriors too slack will the Knight's win again this year not sure I knew the raiders would put in a big one today down there in the cold it's been a big weekend on Friday all I could see of tiger girl was her tail lights still anyones tipping comp.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That field goal only just fell over the crossbar, but it was a good shot and a well deserved result if the highlights are to be trusted.

BigPeteBx's picture

Good evening Steely - I'm ok, I think.
Lots on with running around and in addition to NRL, I now have EPL in 2nd Round and tipping to analyse there, as I am in a past seasons free ESPN Tipping Comp there - winners given bragging rights and all that jazz.
Then in October, A-League starts back up.
So a few interests to attend during NRL & Thinker site off-season.

Certainly has been a mixed bag this round - also!
Usually in past years gone by, rounds this late into a season, have faves winning, to keep their finals hopes intact or alive.
Cheers mate and keep well - have a good week.
Big Pete

Steel panther
I hope tigers beat manly next week no offence intended there big pete by saying that but Dylan walker does like to niggle and get in your head or your face for that matter so I would like to see tigers win but now I've said that manly will probably win that's the sort of luck i'm having at the moment ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Christine - I quite understand and this season Manly have really got up my nose. There are times they play like possessed devils, then they play all over the place, like a busted sewer pipe. I love me team, but they have cost me in a couple of tipping comps. You really think they can do it, then they fall through their back passage. Ok agree, there has been a few saga's out there at Brooky but Manly needs to steer clear of the bottom two. Good chance they might win at Campbelltown this week and thank heavens it isn't Leichaardt, they're playing at. Then last round in Brizzy - its Broncos and if Broncs are finals contenders they will win, as last round of NRL and for their patriotic supporters who fill Suncorp week in, week out.
Cheers, keep well and have a good week - Big Pete

mark ashford's picture

Congratulations to my mate Rocket on hitting the front on what was another difficult tipping weekend.
As Sterlo said today on the sunday footy show "the bottom 8 are playing better than the top 8" Only 3 top 8 teams scored a win and only the Broncs against another top 8 team.
The Raiders effort against the Roosters was to be admired, gives Ricky some comfort for next year.
Latrell Mitchell is a gifted player but his coach needs to have a word to him to curb his anger.

mark ashford's picture

With all the naughtiness on the net these days I would suggest NO ONE visits Lola or Lamar websites.

Yes your right Mark hopefully the Thinker removes it

Morning Folks

I'm a big believer in giving credit where credit is due so as much as this hurts I have to say it;
Well done this weekend Rocket, an amazing result in a very difficult tipping round. You deserve to be on top as you have set the standard all year. Although Tiger Girl still has a big chance, well done again.

I think fans from the Eels, Manly, and Tigers can all have a bitch together. The Eels and Manly had the biggest chances of winning but the Tigers again at Leichhardt Oval couldn't deliver.

Someone mentioned that is always next year, I've been saying that for my Tigers since 2005.

Have a great week folks

Tiger

manyana's picture

Hi Christine, I think everyone is having "one of those seasons".
All teams seem to up & down.
I'm like you, if I think a team will win, then the opposition beats them.
Ah well, that's rugby league.
Best of luck with the rest of your picks.
I think I'm at the stage where I'll pick the team that I think will win & then go for the opposition.
In our family tipping competition, I almost went for my "power round", that's double points. Boy, am I glad I didn't, as I think I only picked 2 winners this week!!

manyana's picture

Hi Mark, the names are not just Lola & Lamar, they seem to change with every post.
Definitely not a good idea to visit their website!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Tiger, the BOYS have been in that "next year" mode for the last few years, I just don't know when it goes from being a mind set to reality.

Steel Panther's picture

Tiger...and you think you've got it tough...I've been saying that since 1995....

The Thinker's picture

I think I got them all....you'd be amazed how many spam attempts there are every week...and most of them seem to be advertising the same things.

All the best
