Finals week two

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

This is the third meeting of these sides this year, and thus far the teams have won one game each, and on each occassion the margin was a solitary point. That would indicate we are in for another close contest here. I'm looking to the most recent contest between these two, which was in round 17 when the Bunnies prevailed 21-20. Note that the Sea Eagles scored more tries in that game and the Bunnies didn't score any tries in the second half – it was the kicking boot of Adam Reynolds that got them over the line. The other thing to be mindful of when looking at that round 17 game is how the playing lists have changed for both sides. Manly have added Koroisau at dummy half which is a positive, but they are without Thompson and Sironen in the back row (not that their absence stopped them last week). Perhaps more importantly, here are the players for the Bunnies on Friday that didn't play in round 17:

  • Alex Johnstone
  • Sam Burgess
  • Tom Burgess
  • George Burgess
  • Ethan Lowe
  • Mark Nicholls

That's five very handy forwards and a very dynamic finisher. The return of Taupau for Manly is a huge inclusion, but it looks like the Bunnies have an edge in the middle. If the Rabbitohs forwards can keep it simple and win the yardage battle, I expect Cook, Murray, Walker and Reynolds to get the job done. This is just the second time Manly have played at ANZ all season, and their record at this ground in recent years has been poor.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 8

Result – Rabbitohs 34 defeated Sea Eagles 26

Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – AAMI Park

Teams don't crack the 50 point barrier very often. It's only happened four times all season, and the Eels have done it twice. Their 58 points over the Lightning Link Broncos is the equal second highest score for the year. That's the good news. The bad news is that the highest score this season was 64 points...by the Storm...against the Eels. The Storm did that at a neutral ground (although it was at Suncorp where the Storm seem to perform better than at home). I'm not suggesting for a minute that we will see a repeat of that on Saturday night. The Eels were terrific against the Broncos and they have to be heading south with a spring in their step. But the Storm are not the Broncos, and I expect their preparation will be absolutely professional. The Storm have lost just five games all season and the margins in those games have been 1, 2, 1, 4 and 2. I was deluded enough (even if I was right) to tip against them last weekend, but I can't tip against them this time.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 32 defeated Eels 0

Wally Lewis - week two finals selections (in bold)

One way traffic all the way!!!

Eels' encounter tonight was with a team with a totally different, and determined, mindset to the one they played last week.

Feel for you Baggy, and other Eels supporters, but the strides your team has made in the last 12 months should make you proud!

Cheers,
Mary

Ahhh we gave up with those first few penalties. Mad Monday should be Evans and Sivo running laps while Reed, Dylan and Waqa have some beers. But typical game of two halves, we out performed them in the second, just failed to score.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Would have posted earlier but there is a F bomb rule here. Nice to see you back Rocket, at least my BOYS turned up to play in the second half at least. How are your record holders going?

Rocket Ryan's picture

58 or 32 whats it matter duck egg all over our faces and a long off season ahead.
Might try the pokies myself.

Yep not much else to do in the end, but build and refocus. What are your thoughts on all the nonsense that has come out since last Sunday Ryan. I'm waiting for our turn with similar.

Hi All
Back from the Goldie after 1 & 1/2 days with my kids. Had a great time.
Have any of you tried to teach 9 & 6 year old grandkids how to fish? If you haven't then do it as its the best fun you'll have standing up.
I would like to thank all for birthday wishes including you Annonymous/Eugene as I'm sure you really do care.

Baggy
My heartfelt thoughts go to you and the "BOYS".
After your troweling of the Broncs I thought you were in with a good chance. I originally went Eels but changed to Storm as the game was at AAMI.
Don't be too disappointed mate, you've gone from wooden spoon to the 2nd week of the finals. An incredible effort.

Didn't see the game but believe from media reports you guys were hard done by. When are the refs going to get some things right.
Des was royally p---ed of after the game and from what I've heard rightly so. Dessie and the team can hold their heads up high after a tough season, wish I could say the same about the Broncs.

I hope we're not the only ones to salute John Sutton on this site.
As you said he's not a Cam Smith or a Latrelle Mitchell but he's put in for Souths for as long as I can remember. Never a "dirty" player, a good try scorer and great in defense. I believe he retires this year and hope the club sends him out in the appropriate way.

It's all good Mark, thanks it's painful but it's a hell of a lot better than 2018. Hope you had an enjoyable time yesterday.

I don't recall ever hearing anything bad about john Sutton I mean you never hear his name dragged through the mud by the media as far as I know he has always been a good club man yes he is a Maroubra boy involved with the club outside of playing for souths but he has always managed to keep the two separate as far as I know please correct me if I am wrong on that one but I have never heard anything apart from the incident that time with the Maroubra boys & I don't even know if Sutton was there then when that happened or not ...

Thats ok Christine, Its horrible feeling, and we did play well terribly before the end of the half. But we didn't come last, and we made the 8. Life is good.

People who abandon dogs or cats should be flogged. If you have a pet and can't look after it then get a friend to take over or take it to the RSPCA. We have a problem with feral cats where I live and they are uncontrollable. Don't like them and they are trapped and put down.
Give me a cute puppy anytime.

BigPeteBx's picture

Totally agree with you Mark.
We have stray neighbours cats wandering about here, but usually very early morning or during night. Bloody things attack some lovely birdlife we have about. My daughters dog keeps patrol well, when she is outside. Colder weather, she is inside and I cant blame her, just like cats, one would think they'd be near a warm heater or fire.

FYI and Manyana - Greg and Wendy are re-naming the shop to Avondale Meats. I take it the shopping centre is called Avondale.

Cheers good friend and keep well
Pete

Evening Mark - it was a topsy turvy season.
Eels and my boys, were the big improvers.
I really felt that game against Souths was ours, as that is why I tipped Manly and only a few did here. Even Baggy G did and that is very unusual for an Eels supporter.
The game was ours, until Jake was locked away for 10. That was the sealer for Bunnies.

I cant see Souths getting past a well-oiled Canberra in Canberra, as Souths have had a couple of hard past matches and would be running on empty this week. Due for snow down in the alps, so it might just be a bit cold for the bunnies.

Cheers and keep well
Big Pete
