Round twenty three selections

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Bankwest Stadium

What I said about the Bulldogs last week (and the weeks prior) still holds. They're winning games on the back of water-tight defence, and keeping a top four team tryless for 80 minutes is worthy of platitudes. Note that the Eels have conceded just 30 points in their last three games too, so we have two well-drilled defensive units on display on Thursday night. I keep tipping against the Bulldogs and I'm not alone. If they win again I wouldn't be surprised but I'm with the Eels for a raft of reasons:

  • a top four finish is well and truly alive
  • their record at Bankwest is hard to knock
  • their victory over the Bulldogs in round two was comprehensive and away from home

Whatever the result, having two competitive teams in Sydney's golden west is good for the game. Should be a fair crowd by Thursday night standards.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result – Bulldogs 12 defeated Eels 6

North Queensland Cowboys vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Cowboys could rally together and win a game for retiring monolith Matt Scott, but my gut feel is they might do that next week in their last home game of the season. Taumalolo has been named on an extended bench but I usually interpret that to mean he isn't quite ready. With that in mind, and with what the Knights did to the Cowboys without JT last weekend, I have to tip the Panthers. A top eight finish is still a possibility...barely.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Result – Cowboys 24 defeated Panthers 10

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

I had a beer with Anthony Siebold and Allan Langer last Saturday. When I say 'had a beer' what I mean is I loitered nearby while they had a beer. Why would either of those blokes want anything to do with a mug like me? Anyhoo they seemed in good spirits, especially after Siebold tipped Alfie into a winner at Eagle Farm. A bit of chat in the lead up to this game has added some extra spice. We may see some of that spill onto the field, particularly if Sam Burgess can get himself fit in time. If he doesn't, the Rabbits pack could struggle, particularly with brother Tom unavailable. The Broncos lose Pangai Jnr for this and probably the rest of their season, but Matt Gillett and Alex Glenn return just in time. The suspension of Jake Turpin might be harder to overcome, so the Broncos need Boyd to deliver alongside O'Sullivan in the halves. When these sides last met the Rabbitohs won in an absolute canter, but it's hard to believe it's the same team that couldn't score a try against the Bulldogs last weekend. The Bunnies are slight favourites but I'll tip the home side in front of what should be a sizeable crowd.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Rabbitohs 22 defeated Broncos 20

Cronulla Sharks vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – PointsBet Stadium

Apparently the Warriors are still a chance of making the finals – it must take some particularly special form of mathematical wizardry to get them there. Any loss and it's over...if it isn't already. It was fleeting but Moylan and Dugan both played last start, which means they actually had four good hamstrings to share for a change. It was short-lived with Moylan succumbing to, you guessed it, a hamstring issue. Dugan back to fullback this weekend, hamstrings permitting. I say the best form of revenge is to live your life well, and Shaun Johnson gets to exact some revenge on the team that punted him by putting the Warriors finals hopes to the sword. I've been saying the Warriors season is over for a while now. I'll be right eventually.

Verdict – Sharks by 8

Result – Sharks 42 defeated Warriors 16

Wests Tigers vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Campbelltown Stadium

The winner here keeps their finals hope alive while the loser plans their holidays. As such, this becomes one of the most important games this round. These sides met less than a month ago in Newcastle, where the Tigers prevailed 28-26. This games moves to Campbelltown which aids the Tigers cause, but they head into a must win game with two of their wisest, steadiest heads (Farah and Mbye) on the sidelines. The Tigers lost their second string dummy half last week, so they've dragged Josh Reynolds out from wherever they've been hiding him for another run. I'm sure he'll relish the opportunity but it's a big ask. Ponga and Pearce were back to their best last weekend and they'll be hard to contain if they repeat that performance. Take note the news regarding Nathan Brown too – it's amazing how often teams respond positively to such things.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result – Tigers 46 defeated Knights 4

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

The Chooks have won five in a row and have scored 190 points (averaging 38 per game) in the process. It's been an age since a team won back-to-back premierships but they look likely don't they? The Dragons just don't have enough points in them to make this a contest. Sure they scored 40 points against the Titans, but this is a proper football team they're up against here. Taukeiaho returns from injury to make the tricolours even more formidable. We are the Roosters...the red, white and bluesters.

Verdict – Roosters by 16

Result – Roosters 34 defeated Dragons 12

Melbourne Storm vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

You'll notice I'm languishing on the tipping ladder this season. Don't worry, I noticed too. It's partly because some of you people are freaking geniuses, and it's also partly because I've made some pretty dud calls this season. One of the biggest was tipping the Titans to beat the Storm earlier this season. The Storm rested five Origin players and they still beat the Titans on the Gold Coast 38-18. Given that result, what will the purple machine do back in Melbourne with all their Origin players available? Do rugby league scoreboards have space for triple figures?

Verdict – Storm by 68 (not a typo)

Canberra Raiders vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

For the third week in a row the Raiders give us the game of the round. After a very competitive loss to the Chooks they came from behind to run down the Storm in Melbourne. That's the two best teams in the NRL so form doesn't get much better than that. The weather looks pretty good on Sunday (for Canberra) so there'll be no shortage of vikings in the stands. Manly have struggled somewhat away from Brookvale this season (winning five from eleven) but one of those wins was against the Storm. The Raiders are a warm favourite here, and should be, but I'll tip the visitors in an upset. Manly beat the Raiders earlier this season at Brookvale and they won that game without Tommy Turbo and Addin Fonua-Blake. What a game though, and thank heavens it gets the free-to-air Sunday afternoon timeslot.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 1

Wally Lewis - round twenty three selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • EELS vs Bulldogs
  • Cowboys vs PANTHERS
  • Broncos vs RABBITOHS
  • SHARKS vs Warriors
  • Tigers vs KNIGHTS
  • Dragons vs ROOSTERS
  • STORM vs Titans
  • RAIDERS vs Sea Eagles

Tiger and Baggy G
You were both receivers of the venom from Coach when he was here.
My call is ignore we don't want to start that nonsense again.
So it's GOODBYE Coachy yet again.

Steel Panther's picture

More comments already this round than last & the round hasn't even kicked off!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Let's be honest I had more issues with another former contributer, I liked what coach brought to the table with his analysis of top/bottom four, his theories and thinking, but left the rest. If he is back to spread insight then all good, if it is about driving wedges and being a pain in the posteria, well it makes no difference, coach or anyone else that's not welcome here. But speculation will help no-one, let us see how the lie of the land occurs and deliver judgement where appropriate.

Yes that’s right Baggy

I am fine with whoever is on the site as longer as there’s no bullying In happy

put my tips in for taking the same as footy chick & wally
on the other point of conversation it is up too the thinker who is on this website & who isn't no one else really gets a say but we can all keep it civil if anyone says something some else doesn't like or it is put in a way to irritate & get your back up we all just have to keep a level head & let the thinker deal with it , it isn't that hard we are not back in primary school ...

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Congratulations to the Bulldogs for yet another win. All heart in defence to keep the Eels to 6 only scoring 12. Unbelievable from the Dogs

Baggy_Gee's picture

The only part I was upset with was that Josh Jackson stayed on after he came up and start that nonsense with Nathan Brown in front of the ref, apart from that we deserved to lose. Moses threw Ma'nu several terrible passes, and that shoulder charge was brain dead. Atkins did a good job of being clear and showing a spine the entire game, so all in all, happy with the reffing, pissed off with the BOYS for a horrible game.

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Yeah that decision for the Jackson-Brown incident was a little dodgy. But there were no calls that would've affected the result anyways I don't think. That was a finals like game. It was even interesting when it was 12 on 12. Tough footy from both sides with plenty taken out of both sides.

Dragons-fanboy's picture

But then again there were plenty of errors in that game. I saw that there were 25 errors in the game in total.

Baggy_Gee's picture

As I said to the wife it was 24 caret tripe. We didn't deserve to lose and they didn't deserve to win. But they did outplay us and got the result. I award the BOYS no points and may God have mercy on their souls.

Anonymous's picture

I remember a whole gang of others either attacking this coach guy, who isn’t me by the way, or joining in both male or female to say how funny the post about the coach was. I think he then came back to say well isn’t that a bit hypocritical to say that he was the problem, if others were fine to treat him this way? Good on the coach for sticking up for himself. I never saw him call people names unlike the manly fanatic and yet you guys befriended him and supported his troll-like comments. Apart from that, coach would offer lots of team-ribbing but so what? You support your team, and you dislike plenty of others. Who isn’t that ? What a world it would be if Roosters and Bunnies fans held hands watching a game together. Not the real world. Good on the coach for keeping it real, and boo to the regulars for being hand holding flower child one minute and a pack of trolls the next.

Steel Panther's picture

I don't support some of the past poor behaviour on this site but Anonymous makes some valid points especially the one about the support shown to the Manly supporter here a couple of seasons ago by many on this site. It appalled me and felt at times that he was shown the red carpet on here yet he resorted to some pretty horrible personal attacks especially on Baggy. The Coach on the other hand simply rubbed people up the wrong way (me included) with his sometimes abrasive approach towards individuals opinions. It was his lack of respect at times for others opinions that riled me. Apart from that he contributed with footy stats and his own loud opinion which was a far cry better than name calling and attacking individuals on a personal basis.

Steel Panther's picture

Baggy

Know you were disappointed in your BOYS last night but maybe we saw some complacency knowing they are comfortably in the 8 now. It's been on the tip of my tongue for a few weeks but after last night I will share my thoughts on Nathan Brown. Paul Gallen is obviously passing on the baton to this bloke when he retires. Brown plays the game like Gallen and Greg Bird combined and may have been schooled by Adam Blair in the art of cheap shots. These are my observations after watching many Eels games this season. It's a shame as the game doesn't need players like this.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not sure on your Nathan Brown assessment there steel, but he was brainless, brain dead and a moron to lead late with the shoulder. He will get decent amount of time for it and rightly so, maybe it will clear his head and allow him to go back to running the ball. Though did you see how often he stepped between defenders and made post contact meters with good footwork.

a's picture

Yes both that nameless Manly supporter and Coach stir up trouble a couple years ago and especially when they were together just hope it doesn’t return like this again soon

Steel Panther's picture

There's no doubting he's a good lad Baggy. Tough and nuggetty (almost in the mould of Bird) but he doesn't need to bring the filth into his game. Let his footy do the talking!! No good to your BOYS if he's sitting in the stand.

@ Anonymous

Yeah mate, you’re dead right on the length of my comments (diatribe) each week 😁

I keep telling myself that I need to shorten it down a whole heap but it’s proving more difficult than I thought (natural story-teller/waffler). Will definitely make plans in that regard for next year. Thanks for the reminder bud and have a good one. Cheers…

Christine 's picture

Newbie Don't change what you do it you you just stock to being you & on the other note I think it is safe to say we hit a nerve he bit so let it go we know who we are dealing with & we know how to handle that & that's what bothers him the most ,he will get board soon he is just trying to talk himself up ...

Anonymous's picture

At 5:12 this morning a different person posted under the name anonymous
If there are two anonymous’s does that mean we are anonymoi ?
Anyway I have never said I was the coach it was a presumption made by those reading the comments though having said that I believe the Anonymous at 5:12 is dum dum dum (dramatic music) is.
No one else except the true coach would pump up himself and remember such fine details and yet try to cover by knowing all that but not his full name saying that “coach guy “ to throw even the most cunning sleuth off the scent.
The plot thickens

Baggy_Gee's picture

Unless this is a double bluff anon, bluff the bluffers before they catch on to your bluff. Or is that a triple bluff with a half lutz

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans

Just a heads up that I'm sneaking away for a short holiday with Ms Thinker and the junior Thinkers in Queenstown. Leaving this weekend for a week.

Steel Panther,

From memory I don't think you live there but if you do give me a nudge.

You shouldn't notice any great difference on the website while I'm away, except my accent might start sounding funny. If I'm slightly delayed with updating results or anything else, I'm probably stuck in a crevasse without a wifi signal...or something.

All the best

Mary S's picture

Enjoy your break Mr Thinker and family - don't get stuck in that crevasse you mentioned!!
Cheers,
Mary

Steel Panther's picture

Hey Thinker,

I've never been to Queenstown. It's way too cold for me!! I'm in Auckland and that's bad enough although Auckland is more wet than cold (bl00dy wet here this month!!). There's a reason why I holiday on the Sunshine Coast haha.
Hope you and your family enjoy yourselves. Not sure if it's your first trip there but I understand it's damn expensive but beautiful.

newbie from perth's picture

@ Baggy

Ah, the old “triple bluff with a half lutz” 😁 An oldie but a goodie.

@ The Boss

Hope you, Mrs Thinker and the thinkerettes have a great time. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoy your holiday good sir.

Cheers!!!

Well done on Cowboys for finally get a win

Looks like that might silence a certain someone on this site

Mary S's picture

Great win by Cowboys - would have been great to have more play like that earlier in the season but great to see more determination tonight!!

christine 's picture

lick your wounds anonymous ...

christine 's picture

I take that back I don't want to stoop to your level anonymous, enjoy the rest of your weekend ...

manyana's picture

Hi Thinker, ( and family) enjoy you NZ holiday.
Cheers, manyana.

Anonymous's picture

Manyana
I tried to warn you
I’m 2/3 in my comp cowboys were always going to do it for Matt Scott and Souths are a class above the broncos but damn you eels playing for a top 4 spot and bank west oh well
Christine why would I be licking my wounds when my team hasn’t lost this weekend?
Baggy your eels “missed it by that much”
Does anyone know if Big Pete is around?
I gotta mate going on one of those virgin space shuttles and he’s bound to know someone on the moon.

christine 's picture

not you manyana re read what I said it wasn't directed towards you at all in any way I said it to anonymous ...

christine 's picture

I am not stirring any one up we are not going to go back to having 400 comments posted each week all on stats & start arguments because we don't like someone choice in a team they follow because we have come too a conclusion we don't like someone ie the person or there said traits we have been keeping the comments posted down & it is already creeping back up again so coach we are not silly it happens every time your on here & you also had to change what you called yourself hence anonymous because once you register under one name using that said computer you can't re register with the same computer using a different name , disagree all you like you won't get a response from me & any comments I do post are not always directed towards you there I have said all I wanted to say so lets get on with the nrl ...

christine 's picture

that was you can't re register using the same name with the same computer so you had to change your name hence anonymous , that's all from me on the subject I have too say ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

When you say "missed by that much" your saying they missed by several country miles. I was devastated to watch it. Bad play but if any of those passes Ma'nu dropped would have opened the flood gates. Moses was throwing them to hard, and just bad all around. Any further discussion will take place in the CoS, do people can't hear me scream.

Anonymous's picture

Baggy don’t tell me you think the eels will make the top 4
I told you not to tell me that!
I guess it could be worst you could be agent 13.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That's the way i feel at the moment, stuffed into the eight in the most uncomfortable position. I only want 5-6th, home final, and make the 8 after the spoon last year. Ahhhhhhh well it's just a tad of optimism on my part.

Anonymous's picture

Would you believe I heard Semi would be back for the finals
You find that hard to believe
Would you believe semi will be ready next year and will attend pre season training
No
What about Semi waving to the boys at training on the way to meet his mates for a kava session

Baggy_Gee's picture

Now that I believe. But it would be nice for the game if he came back to Parramatta and played center, or wing. As good as Brad has been, Sami is far better all round.

manyana's picture

Anonymous, thanks for the warning.
Actually I was rather chuffed that someone actually looked at my tips, considering that I'm not doing very well in the tipping comp.
Good on you for picking a couple of winners.
Keep up the good work & you might end up a bit higher on the tipping ladder.

manyana's picture

No worries Christine. Hope you are feeling a bit better.
Cheers, manyana.

mark ashford's picture

The Broncs/Rabbits game last night was a battle of not who wanted to win but who could put more hurt on the opposition. Two Rabbits sent off to the bin but the Broncs failed to capitalize on this. They should have won the contest being a home game and no Burgess boys. If the Sharks win today the Broncs drop to #8. They then face Eels at home and the resurgent Dogs in Sydney, not a nice thing. As much as I hate to say it, it's goodbye to my Broncs this year.

To be honest I couldn't give a rats if you are Coach or not.
Your recent posts are all footy related and therefore welcome.
That's all we ask and you seem to have some insights.
Semi Radraha (is that how you spell it) will not return for the finals as the Eels team is set. Maybe as a spectator. However if you're correct I would love to see him back in the Eels next year. Baggy will be over the moon.
