Wests Tigers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – Bankwest Stadium
The Tigers, theoretically at least, kept their top eight hopes alive with a stunning win over the Sea Eagles in round seventeen. To stay in contention they will need to win their last three games of the regular season...and they can't. They can't because they have played top eight teams nine times this year, and they lost eight times. The only top eight team they have beaten this season is the Sharks, and they aren't a proper top eight team anyway. Their last three games are against the Bunnies, Storm and Eels. It can't happen, it won't happen, and it can't happen. The Rabbits gave the Storm a shake last start. Specials.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10
Verdict – Rabbitohs 26 defeated Tigers 24
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
People with their ears closer to the ground than I do are suggesting that the once mighty Bulldogs are a club on the verge of self-implosion. Their on-field performances wouldn't have helped, but those on the park are certainly trying. They face an opponent spiralling out of finals contention on Friday night, and have to be some chance, but the season ending injuries to Dylan Napa and Kieran Foran make it hard. Manly dont have a lot to play for anymore, but I think they can pick up their first win since July.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 1
Verdict – Sea Eagles 32 defeated Bulldogs 20
Penrith Panthers vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Panthers Stadium
Penrith take on the only team that has beaten them this season. That was back in round five, when the Eels were going much better than they are now. Even then, Penrith were the dominant team on the night, and it was peculiar (to me at least) that they lost. Isaah Yeo returns for the black cats, bolstering them even further. For the Eels, Reed Mahoney has overcome a shoulder injury which is good news for them (and potentially for Queensland later this year). It's hard to come up with a reason why the Panthers will lose this, so I won't...and they won't.
Verdict – Panthers by 13
Verdict – Panthers 20 defeated Eels 2
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – WIN Stadium
It doesn't bring me any joy talking down NRL teams. I genuinely wish we had 16 teams in contention for the minor premiership. Sadly, we do not, and I have to be honest. The Dragons are no hope here, and the Raiders have an opportunity to bolster their points differential and shore up a home final, or even a top four finish if the Eels completely lose the plot. For the Raiders, Soliola isn't far away from a return. Despite the loss to the Roosters last weekend, they are still a genuine contender.
Verdict – Raiders by 28
Verdict – Raiders 37 defeated Dragons 8
Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium
I expect the Broncos will be up for this game, because a win here puts to rest any thoughts of them running last this season. That's a pretty low bar for success for any team, but especially this team. The Broncos are training next door as I write, so I took the trouble to duck over and watch them go through their drills for twenty minutes. They look sharp, but I've thought that several times this year and it hasn't made a lick of difference. Alex Glenn and Joe Ofahengaue are back, adding some experience and starch to the pack. You can't possibly tip them with any confidence, but Saturday night could be a rare chance for the Broncos to sing the team song after a game (if any of them can remember how it goes).
Verdict – Broncos by 4
Verdict – Titans 18 defeated Broncos 6
Sydney Roosters vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Sydney Cricket Ground
The Roosters, on the wrong end of the top four, face a side that thrashed a top eight team last weekend, and they're a $1.10 favourite. Normally I would say that is madness, but in this instance it's probably about right. The Knights are resting their two most potent backs (Ponga and Hunt) and their line-up numbers 1 through 7 looks woefully inadequate in comparison with their opponent. Jake Friend returns and Mitch Aubusson isn't far away. As the finals loom, Victor Radley is perhaps the only first seventeen Rooster that is unavailable. Here they come.
Verdict – Roosters by 25
Verdict – Roosters 42 defeated Knights 12
Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Sunshine Coast Stadium
While both sides won last start, there is a clear divide between the very good sides and the also rans. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they are clearly in that latter group. Papenhuyzen is rested here and he was at his absolute best against the Rabbits, but the Storm have been pretty good at finding useful replacements when needed. Nicho Hynes gets a chance to shine...and probably will. While the Storm can't win the minor premiership from here, a top two finish looks a certainty.
Verdict – Storm by 22
Verdict – Storm 36 defeated Cowboys 20
Cronulla Sharks vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
A few important returns for the Sharks - Johnson, Fifita and Rudolph. I rate Rudolph as both a player and a reindeer, but I have some doubts about the fitness of Johnson and Fifita. This is a very important match for both sides, and I think the winner here makes the top eight at the expense of the loser. After this the Sharks have two games where they will probably be torn to shreds, so they need this, and the pressure will break them. As for the Warriors, anything they do this season is a bonus, and if they can win this they will probably only need one more win from their last two to sneak into the top eight. What a freakin story that would be. Crossing everything.
Verdict – Warriors by 2
Verdict – Sharks 22 defeated Warriors 14

Good Afternoon Big Pete
Since we last spoke my team won the FA cup so it’s not such a bad year.
I agree with the anti butcher Mark Ashford that there’s nothing wrong with a bit of banter and all I do is try an create a bit of fun but unfortunately I’m not getting the results or the insults (that did rhyme Mark).
Guru might think I don’t like him but I saw a bit of confidence in this post so I gave it to him but instead of an ace I copped an underarm serve.
I don’t know what happened to Tiger he’s gone toothless and the Rocket has failed to launch.
So now we have something probably worse than COVID the dreaded potato virus who relies on stats from the past to predict the future. He has already started on the roosters this might be fun.

Still hearing a sheepish no comment in the air about no quarantine for players breaking the bubble. Was good enough for players from other teams, for Seibold and for Bennett. Why not ok for Cordner? Anything to say porkchops ?

Coach
I hope you're not calling me porkchops, I don't like porkchops, prefer lambchops. Mate you should try living here in QLD. Millionaires, film stars, dubious tv stars seem to come and go as they please while someone who's father is dying can't get in to say goodbye, it is a disgrace. Our Premier is doing more press conferences than the rest of the Premiers put together boasting about how she has saved the AFL and the NRL. It should be one rule for one and one rule for all. The problem is someone keeps changing the goal posts.

Your post about the Broncs had some feeling in it and I must agree with their hopeless attempt to play football. If they had any chance of redemption it was against the Titans but no the tents folded and they all went home to count their money. If I was Paul Green or Kevvie Walters I be seriously thinking of taking on this team of losers.

I'm sorry you refer to me as "anti butcher" as that is far from the truth.
Yes I'll have a say when you get close to the bone but it's all meant in fun. Now the Coach is back expect things to liven up here, he doesn't miss anyone so we're in for some fun.

Coach
Just read your post about Darrius announcing another little Darrius to come. With the sex ban on, I wonder, I wonder, no it couldn't be, surely not, surely not WB.

I am making a late change becausr i am not on the ladder anyway i am tipping warriors over sharks sorrybtoger but i have to stock with the warriors this season ...

No Mark. Refers to a purveyor of cheap cuts.
Appreciate your opinion none the less. Agree, there should be no exceptions to these rules. The virus doesn’t know the difference.

I didn't know tiger had tipped sharks i just said i was takingbthe samw as tiger except for titans so now it would also be warriors ...

Evenin Butch - they also won last night, against Fulham in the new season Round 1.
That's footy with an underarm serve - better than a double fault.
Tiger has a bit on his plate of late (rhymes), but also looking over his magpie shoulder, to see who is on his clanger, for the final standings of NRL, with two rounds to go.
Rocket is a concerned man, as he and Mark will be watching closely for these last two rounds, to see how Bulldogs go and to see who gets the w/spoon. For the record - Broncs play Eels and Cowboys, Dogs play Souths and Panthers.
That will also be interesting!
Have a good week and keep well

Dont think so Mark.
It will be Darius' bambino, as he's been having too many sleeps on the field, to not be awake and alert at the home base.

Greetings football fans,
I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 18. While the top eight is pretty settled, our tipping competition is still pretty wide open.
With all the favourites getting up we had plenty of high scores, and more than a handful of perfect 8s. Bronco Legend takes a narrow lead at the top with a huge peleton still in contention for a top three finish.
If anyone sees any errors in the scoring just let me know.
Once I have the details for the last two weeks of the NRL draw punched into the system I will publish the round 19 tipping page. My tips and previews should be published on Tuesday/Wednesday.
All the best

I understand your BPM comment but for the life of me can't remember anyone declaring themselves a Panthers supporter here other than yourself. Of course not all tipsters declare their allegiance so here we go. The Panthers are on top of the ladder and unless half the team breaks a leg they will be minor premiers. Tipsters, if you support the Black Cats let us know. Coach needs all the support he can get.

Hi Thinker (still don't know who you are),
Embarrassed to call myself Bronco Legend but done that before their downfall after the pandemic but that's life.
Its my first year tipping here but have followed your site for tips for years as been in a family tipping comp which I'm leading as well ha ha, but enjoying the fierce competition from the other tipsters on your site.
Yes round 18 was a lucky one for me the sharks got home after a good comeback by the warriors, was contemplating going for my team the Boncos even though you picked them but i am still not convinced they have it and may not pick them for the last 2 games.
Cant believe i have got 8 games from 8 twice this season this never happens to me, a lot of tipping is luck not skill.
Hoping we don't get the spoon but if we do I'm hoping it will give everyone a big kick in the arse in the Broncos and make them better out of this for next season which i think it will.
My guess for the new coach at the broncos will be Paul Green for 2021 ,my wife said to me,( who knows nothing about rugby league and cant stand it) but heard Paul Green got sacked from the Cowboys and said why would they employ him as coach for the Broncos when the Cowboys got rid of him.
Good luck with the tips everyone.
Bronco Legend

Thanks for the call out but not needed. Numbers on a footy page don’t change the score on the field.

Interesting reply to Marks comment Coach, as you were the one who indicated that someone needed to speak up for "#BlackPanthersMatter"
It would be great to hear from 'Black Cat' supporters, as I'm sure they are as enthusiastic as you, in the results your team is achieving this season!
Cheers,
Mary

I wrote the hashtag so I expect you would know I was designated spokesperson.
I think if other fans out there were interested in saying something, they shouldn’t need any prodding from me.
Choose wisely in your tips Friday night.

If anyone’s still here before the Boss puts up Round 19, just a few comments before I post my weekly 600-page rundown of last week’s action…
I’ve got a week off and was catching up with the comments and I see the Coach is back! Welcome back mate. Your boys are doing OK aren’t they? Looking forward to seeing how they go in the finals for sure.
Loved the bit of biff following the “difference of opinion” between Gagai and Brooks in last week’s Tigers vs. Rabbitohs game. Yet another reason I love this game. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one for violent behaviour and absolutely do not condone it but “letting off steam” is good to see every now and then 😉.
Putting aside him leaving the “bubble” and the furore around his quarantine exemption, I really felt sorry for Boyd Cordner last week. As if losing his cousin wasn’t hard enough, he copped yet another head knock. I think it’s his third one this year and I’m hoping and praying he’s not gonna miss out on finals footy. Absolute tragedy if he does. Maybe he should in fact kill 2 birds with one stone and isolate for 2 weeks 🤔.
Rant Time:
The disallowed try to Lindsay Collins because Nat Butcher was deemed to have obstructed was an absolute travesty. It was pretty obvious that Butcher was the one playing the ball and he didn’t move off the mark. I think Ashley Klein either has no guts or no brains if he sent that one upstairs to Jared Maxwell for review. And Maxwell then made one of the worst decisions of his career. Clowns both of ‘em! Off with their heads! 🤬
OK, I’m outta here as it’s getting late here. Then again, I have this week off so I can stay up late if I wanna 😉. Cheers y’all 🐔 💖 🐔 💖 🐔 💖

I found this article of interest about Benji Marshall and the explanation for Tigers letting him go.

Cheers,
Mary

Don’t think it would matter if they kept Benji or not. They will still be left hamstrung with Brooks in the side. Are they after a fresh start? Or just a quick dust and mop?
Submitted by mark ashford on
Hi Mary
Thanks for that article about Benji but must admit after reading it I was none the wiser why. Surely the main aim of a club is of course to win games but also to attract fans and memberships. Benji fits 2 or maybe 3 of these. I know clubs have to build for the future so I guess I'm still none the wiser.

Hi Coach
I see your general demeanour here hasn't changed. You seem to have no interest in olive branches etc just your own opinions. No problem, at least we know where we stand. Good luck to you.
