Round eighteen selections

Wests Tigers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – Bankwest Stadium

The Tigers, theoretically at least, kept their top eight hopes alive with a stunning win over the Sea Eagles in round seventeen. To stay in contention they will need to win their last three games of the regular season...and they can't. They can't because they have played top eight teams nine times this year, and they lost eight times. The only top eight team they have beaten this season is the Sharks, and they aren't a proper top eight team anyway. Their last three games are against the Bunnies, Storm and Eels. It can't happen, it won't happen, and it can't happen. The Rabbits gave the Storm a shake last start. Specials.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Verdict – Rabbitohs 26 defeated Tigers 24

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

People with their ears closer to the ground than I do are suggesting that the once mighty Bulldogs are a club on the verge of self-implosion. Their on-field performances wouldn't have helped, but those on the park are certainly trying. They face an opponent spiralling out of finals contention on Friday night, and have to be some chance, but the season ending injuries to Dylan Napa and Kieran Foran make it hard. Manly dont have a lot to play for anymore, but I think they can pick up their first win since July.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 1

Verdict – Sea Eagles 32 defeated Bulldogs 20

Penrith Panthers vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Panthers Stadium

Penrith take on the only team that has beaten them this season. That was back in round five, when the Eels were going much better than they are now. Even then, Penrith were the dominant team on the night, and it was peculiar (to me at least) that they lost. Isaah Yeo returns for the black cats, bolstering them even further. For the Eels, Reed Mahoney has overcome a shoulder injury which is good news for them (and potentially for Queensland later this year). It's hard to come up with a reason why the Panthers will lose this, so I won't...and they won't.

Verdict – Panthers by 13

Verdict – Panthers 20 defeated Eels 2

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – WIN Stadium

It doesn't bring me any joy talking down NRL teams. I genuinely wish we had 16 teams in contention for the minor premiership. Sadly, we do not, and I have to be honest. The Dragons are no hope here, and the Raiders have an opportunity to bolster their points differential and shore up a home final, or even a top four finish if the Eels completely lose the plot. For the Raiders, Soliola isn't far away from a return. Despite the loss to the Roosters last weekend, they are still a genuine contender.

Verdict – Raiders by 28

Verdict – Raiders 37 defeated Dragons 8

Gold Coast Titans vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

I expect the Broncos will be up for this game, because a win here puts to rest any thoughts of them running last this season. That's a pretty low bar for success for any team, but especially this team. The Broncos are training next door as I write, so I took the trouble to duck over and watch them go through their drills for twenty minutes. They look sharp, but I've thought that several times this year and it hasn't made a lick of difference. Alex Glenn and Joe Ofahengaue are back, adding some experience and starch to the pack. You can't possibly tip them with any confidence, but Saturday night could be a rare chance for the Broncos to sing the team song after a game (if any of them can remember how it goes).

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Verdict – Titans 18 defeated Broncos 6

Sydney Roosters vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

The Roosters, on the wrong end of the top four, face a side that thrashed a top eight team last weekend, and they're a $1.10 favourite. Normally I would say that is madness, but in this instance it's probably about right. The Knights are resting their two most potent backs (Ponga and Hunt) and their line-up numbers 1 through 7 looks woefully inadequate in comparison with their opponent. Jake Friend returns and Mitch Aubusson isn't far away. As the finals loom, Victor Radley is perhaps the only first seventeen Rooster that is unavailable. Here they come.

Verdict – Roosters by 25

Verdict – Roosters 42 defeated Knights 12

Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Sunshine Coast Stadium

While both sides won last start, there is a clear divide between the very good sides and the also rans. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they are clearly in that latter group. Papenhuyzen is rested here and he was at his absolute best against the Rabbits, but the Storm have been pretty good at finding useful replacements when needed. Nicho Hynes gets a chance to shine...and probably will. While the Storm can't win the minor premiership from here, a top two finish looks a certainty.

Verdict – Storm by 22

Verdict – Storm 36 defeated Cowboys 20

Cronulla Sharks vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

A few important returns for the Sharks - Johnson, Fifita and Rudolph. I rate Rudolph as both a player and a reindeer, but I have some doubts about the fitness of Johnson and Fifita. This is a very important match for both sides, and I think the winner here makes the top eight at the expense of the loser. After this the Sharks have two games where they will probably be torn to shreds, so they need this, and the pressure will break them. As for the Warriors, anything they do this season is a bonus, and if they can win this they will probably only need one more win from their last two to sneak into the top eight. What a freakin story that would be. Crossing everything.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Verdict – Sharks 22 defeated Warriors 14

Wally Lewis - round eighteen selections (in bold)

  • Bulldogs vs SEA EAGLES
  • PANTHERS vs Eels

Pardon me I meant my condolences Tiger

Cheers!!!!

Guru Craig's picture

Condolences on your friend Tiger.

The reason i made the comment about the Tigers is because of the way they have conducted themselves as a club. What they have doe to Benji, probably the greatest ever West Tiger...How they use the media to knock and degrade their own players...Its no wonder the cricket great Michael Clark declined the offer of a board seat.

The behaviour of the West Tigers management has been shameful, dishonourable and down right disgusting!, when you take into account the financial losses for over a decade and how these people treat their own.....Why is integrity so difficult? why can they not conduct themselves with honour and dignity?

There is constant turmoil from the West Tigers, none of this is new. Its been going on for over ten years. The nonsense with Robbie Farrah and Ryan. It fails me that people can behave like that and keep their job. The West Tigers will never have success or harmony while they continue to behave without honour or dignity.

Thursday nights game was enjoyable, Benji Marshall had a ripper while Souths should have some concern. Reynolds and co looked lost at times in attack, the kicking game from the Bunnies was poor and the Tigers were probably the better side.

Mary S's picture

Hi Guru,
Where my interest in NRL has been more recent than a lot of other posters, particularly in regard to the Tigers management, I agree with your comments on last nights game.

Benji really did have a ripper. He was so 'disgusted' with himself when his kick went too long in the last few minutes of the game, therefore missing the possibility of a winning try.
Cheers,
Mary

Guru Craig's picture

Yes i remember that moment...also if his left winger had caught a few of those passes it was a Tigers victory. The Guru feels for Benji, because it's plain to see for all that he is giving 100% and as a playmaker his game is on point right now.

WB seemed happy enough in the press conf but i feel he will have concerns, Reynolds had an off game for sure and Souths didnt really step up.

Hey Guru

Thanks for your comments about my mate.

I see your point about the Tigers, you are on the money there and the rot has been set for years. The facebook group I'm in for Tigers fans is an endless call for the CEO to be sacked. We have always recruited poorly and let go our best prospects more often than not.

My heart rate was through the roof last night when I thought we were on the verge of an upset, even though I tipped the bunnies. Thats footy though and I am a proud supporter this morning due to the effort and pride shown last night, and as you stated we were the better side except for the first 20-25 mins.
Thanks for your open comments mate, nice talking but I have to go and have lunch with the missus.

Enjoy your Friday

Tiges

Tiger
Hope you enjoyed that lunch with your better half. I thought the send offs last night were a joke for both sides. It was a good game to watch and I fear the better side lost. Are you really releasing Benji? He would be a better fit at the Broncs than Foran, just a thought.

tigerholic's picture

Hey Mark
It's very sad that we can't keep Benji for his last year in the NRL. He is a true ambassador for our club and the game.

I'm still hopeful that the club will have a change of heart, Benji was devastated last night after the game in the sheds, he took the blame for the loss because of his decision to kick on the 2nd tackle. I can say in hind sight I think that was the wrong tactic but I have never played footy to the standard of the NRL, he did what he thought was going to get his side home.

I'll always love Benji for what he has done for our club, he would be a great fit in Brisbane as long as he gets game time.

Manly up at half time.

Tiger

Tiger with or without benji you stay true to your team end of story & if you need a reminder just ask me ...

Baggy
Are you nervous mate. You have the only team to have beaten the Panthers this year. I've looked back and most or nearly all of the Panthers wins have come from teams in the bottom 8 must give the boys some confidence. I've tipped Panthers (using my head) but I'll be cheering for the Eels(using my heart). Good luck mate.

a's picture

Wow the eels really did defend but it was no where near enough

Guru Craig's picture

Para turned up tonight, The Guru was impressed with the Eels effort, much improved enthusiasm. Para really put the Panthers off their game in the first half, forcing errors and shutting down 4 trys. This is the area the Guru isnt yet convinced about with Penrith, The G feels Para out muscled the Pennies outside backs. Bigger and harder men the Eels in the centre and wing positions, and they certainly had their opposites worried, Penrith dropping quality passes than would normally get a result and it would seem to be their weakness going forward into the finals.

Couch Potato's picture

6 weeks on, looking back, people will show themselves to have been either on the wagon who cheered the Panthers home each week ala the Winx, the Black Caviar of NRL 2020, and chose to marvel in awe at, what would be, the greatest end streak in 113 seasons, or be on the wagon that backed against them each time.

a's picture

Welcome back coach I knew the winning streak of the Panthers would bring you back

Mary S's picture

I believe in giving credit where credit is due Couch Potato, and like Winx & Black Caviar, credit is due the Panthers for an exceptional season.
Cheers,
Mary

Stone the Crows, hold the phone, "I'll be dammed"

Couch has made a comeback, how have you been Couch, have you been sitting at home keeping tabs on what has been happening here on the site.

I'll have to let Rocket know, he will want to catch up with a few misguided barbs to throw your way I'm sure.

Thinking back when you were one of the regulars, you were a Penrith fan were you not.

I was just thinking yesterday, I'm going to ask everyone just how many Penrith fans do they know. I probably know of just one.

Anyway Couch, nice to see you back and I hope you are well and plan on sticking around.

Tiger

tigerholic's picture

Thanks Christine
Losing someone is always difficult and hard to let go. I lost my mum and dad when I was only 26 and that has always left me feeling a little cheated that I had such a small amount of time with them.
Anyway enough of the tissue grabbing talk, thanks for your comments.

I'm a Tiger for life and if that means we never ever hold the big trophy up again well that's the way it goes.

Hope you are well, did you see Couch has returned.

The Butcher's picture

Attention to detail has always been a main focus in my work
I have my doubts that this is the return of the Nepean nut case
First of all he used an avatar of a potato sitting on a couch and second he was called coach not couch.
He wouldn’t get that wrong.

Mary S's picture

Think you are right Butcher.
I thought it odd when the avatar of a potato on a couch was missing, and Coach always prided himself with that.

Cheers,
Mary

Coach Potato's picture

Creating doubt in the opposition’s minds is the Panthers way.

Personal insults are just a reflection of people’s own insecurities. Show your true self all you like. Panthers ready to visit your shop and order some of that tasty chicken mince very soon.

The Butcher's picture

Another blow in coming in because his team is winning.
At least your one up on other panthers supporters you got your name right the second time.

Coach Potato's picture

I see your grammar is not nearly as sharp as your barbs.

Rick's picture

Hi there Coach welcome back I have missed all your stats this season maybe next year we will see more of you cheers.

Rick's picture

Sorry, also to the Guru after all these years great to have you back too mate cheers.

mark ashford's picture

Couch/ Coach which one is it these days? Either way I can't take too much away from the Panthers impressive run. Interesting games will be when they meet Storm, Raiders and the Roosters in the finals. By the way no need to mention my Broncs run to the bottom I'm fully aware of it. If it really is you I for one would welcome you back (I think we had an imposter a while back) as long as we all play nice and you leave Christine alone.

Christine's picture

Welcome back coach i knew it was only a matter of time with panthers playing the way they are well at least we are getting the regulars back on here spartan warroir has disappeared not sure where he went he is off in battle / conflict somewhere but i don't think you ever met guru or butcher for that matter guru goes way back when & butcher is the newest newbie but newbie will always be newbie from perth thst titleveill always be his anyway coach welcome back ...

Broncos

WTF was that?????

I am embarrassed for the Broncos and I am not a supporter, that was fucking awful. This club has hit lower than rock bottom, they had nothing in attack, they had nothing in defence, they had fucking nothing.

I feel sorry for all of the Broncos fans, the end of this year and the start of next year will not fix the problems that are deep rooted at Red Hill.

Tiger

a's picture

Really hope broncos can fix things up

Christine's picture

Thats two teams not toot tip next year tiger bulldogs & broncos i tipped titans i dsid i was taking the same as you except for taking titans i can't tip broncos ...

Christine's picture

"a" broncos have to start from scratch & foran is not their solution either he is another problem they don't need ...

Coach Potato's picture

I totally understand Cordner being allowed to break the NRL bubble, heart-breaking and tragic. At times like this, the game is much less important .... but not required to quarantined for the next 14 days is a disgrace. An outrage. Jeopardising not just the rest of the NRL season, but the lives, and livelihoods of all Australians. I could never have believed in a million years, the Roosters players were above the game to this extent.

Coach Potato's picture

And extra “d” after quarantine. Dear Lord please forgive me.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I shall Potato, I shall. That is the main issue with the NRL, there are always 2 rules, one for the just, and another for those who have large sacks of cash. Remember the peptide debacle, 3 clubs going to be named, only the Sharks were done, TPJ gets sprung drunk in his car, suspension, Addo-Carr, and MItchell breaking the bubble and charged with gun crimes, nothing. If the game wants to move forward it should be one rule for everyone and it is consistently applied. Its a pity that Boyd has the passing of a cousin to drag him out of the Bubble, but he can still make week 1 of the Finals.

Coach Potato's picture

Baggy, he’s on the field tonight if you weren’t aware. He was amongst who knows how many covid-positive with no symptoms in his time outside the bubble. Unknown is the answer. That’s what the quarantine period is for. Newcastle should have flat-refused to take the field.

Baggy_Gee's picture

No i wasn't aware of that Coach, the joys of a Friday night game, feet up for the weekend.

a's picture

Yeah except Foran will just get injured

Still doing your streak table coach

"a" foran still has other issuses to go with it all too if you think he has solved all of his problems i have got news for you take one look at who he is married to now , i think you find we will see alot more of them yet & i think any club that takes him is justcasking for trouble ...

Good Sunday morning to you Mark.
Yes mate agree with the Butcher stories, but he doesn't stray far.
Seems a good bloke. I'd say coming on finals time, he might just change his avatar to his original Chook's one he had here a season or two ago.
Hmmmm.......mate, as I said in last Thursdays post, don't underestimate it, he must have read it and he's back. Straight to the point and loves his Black Cats, like Butcher loves his Chook's.
Now he's talking chicken mince - as I said, straight to the point, in a round about way.

Finals will be interesting, as we have several here on Thinker site, who are gong to have some fun. I'd still have the pleasure in saying, "my boys can still come 9th". Last week with The TigPies, set us back, but that's footy.

The Peeps are behaving - one is for op, when it gets ok'd. Ankle is the most pain I have at present.

Keep well Mark A and when in Rome, do as The Romans do. Stay with your instincts and remember Foran might need a change and a change of climate - the warmer weather and the warmer hearts.
Have a nice Sunday arvo - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Good Sunday morning Tigger - the best trophy The Tigs have got, is Benji and don't let go of him. His experience might just carry you guys to finals footy in 2021.
Yes mate, The Mulgoa Black Cat has returned and I made that prediction last Thursday night, as his team has been going too good, for us not to hear that from him. It'll be full on, from hereon - at Thinker site.

Cheers Tiger and I hope things are settling in for you.
Big Pete
