Round fifteen selections

Parramatta Eels vs Melbourne Storm – Thursday night – Bankwest Stadium

I held off writing this preview until we had news from the judiciary, and it wasn't a great headline for the Storm. Jesse Bromwich fought the law and the law one, and he joins a pretty long list of pretty good first graders who won't be lining up for the purple machine on Thursday night - C Smith, J Bromwich, Munster, Finucane, Vunivalu and Kamikamica. Take note that Jahrome Hughes has been named but could be a late withdrawal. They were tremendous against the Chooks last week (who, to be fair, ended up more injured than the Storm), but without three of their most important forwards this is another step up for a team that doesn't know how to step down. The Eels couldn't beat the Dragons a week ago, but I think they get lucky here.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Panthers Stadium

The Panthers, atop the table and with a nice short casualty list that is the envy of almost every team in the NRL, just keep on winning. They've been beaten once this season, back in round five to the Eels, and it's still a mystery to me how they lost that game. Meanwhile the list of the teams the Sharks have beaten this season look like also-rans - Broncos, Cowboys, Bulldogs, Sea Eagles, Titans, Warriors, Dragons. I can't see any premiership contenders there. So there's that, and there's the result from round nine when these sides actually played it each other. The Panthers were away from home, and they piled on 56 points.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Broncos suffered another second half capitulation last week - it's all getting a little bit predictable isn't it? When one is in the business of predicting the near future it doesn't hurt to use the near past as a guide. As such, I predict the Broncos will try hard for somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes, then leak points like they just dont care late in the game. Milford slots in for Croft in the halves, but I feel like the Broncos have already played this song before and it didn't get the crowd on their feet. With so many Broncos forwards unavailable (Haas, Lodge, Pengai Jnr, Flegler and Turpin) I can't see any other result but the obvious one. For the record, I have seen the Siebold rumour, and I'm not surprised he's taken the action he has taken.

Verdict – Dragons by 22

Gold Coast Titans vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The Raiders are on the cusp of the top four after putting the Broncos away and improving their points differential. Given their run into the finals I think a top four finish is all but inevitable. Proctor is out for a month following his apparent indiscretion - I'm gobsmacked there wasn't a single newspaper or media outlet that ran with the headline 'Man Bites Shark'. He is a big out for the home side, particularly with Jai Arrow also unavailable. The Titans aren't exactly having a great year, but they have won more games than the other two Queensland teams and their future is looking bright. They won't win this, but they won't lose any fans with their effort on Saturday either.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Leichhardt Oval

The Roosters were never in the hunt against the Storm last start, and they lost a few prized chooks through the course of the game. Waerea-Hargreaves was named last week and didnt play, so I'm a little gun-shy here in case he doesn't play again. They'll win if he does (at least, they usually do). Flanagan is back after a rest, and the promising playmaker Sam Walker is included on an extended reserves list. Despite the injuries to the defending premiers, they have kept Sonny Bill in cotton wool for at least another week. For the Tigers, they need to keep winning to secure a top eight berth, but they only just got there last weekend against the team running last. They'll be competitive, but this is harder than that.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

Every time I think about this game, I visualize the tongue injury to Manly backrower Joel Thompson. Not cool Joel...not cool at all. He's actually talking up his chances of playing, but his doctor has asked him to talk less (because he keeps popping stitches). Not cool Joel. Stand-in fullback Brendan Elliot has done his ACL, and regular fullback Tommy Turbo has had his return delayed even further. Marty Taupau is back which helps, but the depth of the Manly squad has been well and truly tested this season. The Rabbitohs keep plodding along and winning games. They aren't shooting the lights out and no-one is paying them much attention, but they do look set to play finals football this year. I expect they'll do just enough to win this too.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 7

Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

One day I'm going to sit down and put together a 17 man squad of under-appreciated NRL players. The fullback picks himself...Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. All the players with hyphenated surnames are pretty good, but he is is the king of the hyphens. If the Bulldogs can lessen his impact they can go close here, just as they did against the Tigers last week. One win for the Dogs in their last six games might be enough for them to avoid the wooden spoon, and I think this could be the game. They're the outsider here and they should be, but the Warriors record at ANZ isn't flash.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Newcastle Knights vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

The last time the Cowboys won a game was against the Knights back in round seven. Since then the Knights have won 4 from 7, and their losses were all competitive. A win here should all but secure them a finals berth this season. The Cowboys should have won last weekend, but found a way to lose. Struggling teams make a habit of that, and it's hard to break out of it. Knights at home.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Wally Lewis - round fifteen selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning

  • EELS vs Storm
  • PANTHERS vs Sharks
  • Broncos vs DRAGONS
  • Titans vs RAIDERS
  • Tigers vs ROOSTERS
  • RABBITOHS vs Sea Eagles
  • Bulldogs vs WARRIORS
  • KNIGHTS vs Cowboys

All jokes aside that took a lot of guts to share your experience. I also have experienced a traumatic situation relating to death and 30 years on its still hard to shake. I live near Silverwater jail and unfortunately have friends on both sides of the bars and have heard how tough it can be let alone what you went through
Take it one step at a time you obviously have the right traits or you wouldn’t of got selected in the first place.
To show my solidarity I stopped at the bottlo and instead of getting my usual 6 pack of Furphy I decided to buy a 6 pack of Great Northern ...how do you drink that piss. I’ve had 4 when do they kick in?
Keep your chin up just remember our teams play each other tomorrow and I think it may be close.
Enjoy the footy yet to come.

Great news tiger thats what we like to hear & don't ever think the boss would kick you off this site he won't & when you are ever in need we are also here anytime you need to talk about what you deal with at work i also know someone else that is a nuse at a maximum security prison (psyche nurse) that is a tough job ...

Tiger the only time i would ever tip bulldogs this season is when they have to play broncos but i am a bit concerned about my tio now as i didn't know warriors have so many pkayers out but i am sticking with warriors ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

I'm a lot happier this morning the Broncos have finally had to go we look determined and were having a real crack that'll do me it's been a shocking year at least if we have a go I can be happy with that new paragraph
Butcher if you're gonna try and drink Queensland grog please stop putting lemonade in it you're such a dribbler

Tigerholic,

Thank you for sharing your story...and for your extraordinary contribution to the community for so many years.

And on top of all that, you're a top bloke to boot.

Well done sir

Thank you Thinker, Butcher, Christine
I know that there is always help available and even if that is only for a phone chat it can make the world of difference.

Butcher- You need more than 4 of the super crisps mate as they are a mid strength, drink the original if you want to end up like Rocket(messy).
Christine- The Warriors do have a few out but that has been the case for them most of this year. Stick with your tip and see how it plays out.
Thinker- I have learn't to manage the worst of the worst over the last 25 years, don't get me wrong I love what I do and that would be the same for Police, Ambos and Firies who have to deal with trauma and high level stress.
Your site is not merely a tipping comp mate it is community of like minded(except Rocket) individuals who gel together. I am sure that if the need arose none of us would hesitate to travel and give assistance where needed.
Thanks for allowing us all to play a part here on this site. Off to golf now to spoil a good walk or in my case a good cart ride, have a great weekend folks.

Thanks Mark, It was awesome to see the BOYS put in for the full 80 and for the square up not to occur in the second half. I agree with Brad that we could have been better, but how good was the Storms cover defence especially B. Smith getting across to deny Jennings. Only think that has me worked up is how does the Solomon guy get a grade 1 for a blatant shoulder charge K.Hunt style, and our boy gets up to 2 weeks for a good tackle. But lets see if we can back it up next week and close out the season with good wins.

mark ashford's picture

Rocket Ryan & other Bronco supporters.
Did the heart good to see the Broncs finally put in an 80 minute effort.
They were in it all the way and to lose by only 4 points gives us some hope. StG were just a bit better and earned their win. In the next 3 rounds we face Roosters, Panthers and the much improved Titans, a big ask but last nights performance may just give the boys some much needed confidence.

I agree Mark will be back just not this year

Tiger,

I'd like to echo the comments of the many other fine folk on this site. You certainly have a job that's not for the faint hearted and I bet you have been the witness to a lot of unsavoury stuff. Hold your head up mate and keep on the road you're on. You're a champ!!

Cheers SP

Thank you Steel
Very kind words mate, following the footy is one of my ways to destress, unless its a Tigers game:).

Enjoy the rest of the weekend mate.

Tiger

mark ashford's picture

Hey Steel
Your Warriors win again. I did tip the Dogs as I thought I saw some improvement in them last week. Like my Broncs I won't be tipping the Dogs again this year.

Tiger earroirs what can i say ...

Tiger that was meant to read warrors what can i say ...

Steel Panther's picture

Hi Mark,

I have to confess I didn't think they'd win either, tipping the Dogs in my work comp but I'm struggling so badly in the Thinkers comp this year I'm just throwing anything in there now. I tipped Manly as I thought they'd be desperate this week but they dished up a woeful effort, forgetting to even turn up. Big Pete will be gutted.

You and Rocket happier with the Broncos effort this week but I actually thought they were a lot better a few weeks back against the Sharks when I think you were away fishing. Cows now lost 8 straight and watching them again tonight it doesn't surprise me. They are almost too frustrating to watch.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Steel
Yeah just watched the Cows/Knights game and don't think either will feature in the finals. Maybe I'm being a bit hard on the Knights but they should have put the Cowboys to the sword if they are serious contenders. Not sure who I'd tip for the GF winner but it won't be the Knights.

a's picture

Knights will but not cowboys

Steel Panther's picture

You'll be especially pleased too Mark with the Warriors win as a Dogs victory would have sent your Broncos to bottom of the ladder. With all the turmoil the Warriors have faced this year even their harshest critic would have forgiven them for picking up the wooden spoon. I understand the loan players are now wanted back at their respective clubs. How many of them will that leave in the squad?? May struggle to find a fit 17. Proud of the lot of them, no one more so than RTS. He has left his young family back in NZ. A big big sacrifice indeed.

How does a heart felt message to Tiger become another misunderstanding Mr Ashford. I don’t dislike the beer because it’s from Queensland I don’t like it because it taste shit.
In fact I had my first beer in a pub on the Gold Coast. I was 16 on a footy trip away. We met a group of girls and the one I liked invited me to the pub in Tugan. My mate was a bit unsure because we were under age and they seem to be a bit older. But I was up for it.
We walked in without a problem but I didn’t see her then my mate said I think she’s working behind the bar. I thought this should be easy.
So I over confidently walked up and she said what are you having? I said a couple of beers thanks. She said what kind? I honestly didn’t know the different types of beers. so I said what ever you reckon. So she poured the beer and I saw the name on the tap and said that’s one of my favourites and she burst out laughing.
When I brought the beers over my mate said what did you say to make them laugh. I said I don’t know all I said was that’s one of my favourites four crosses. He said you idiot it’s pronounced fourex.

Christine's picture

There is an article on nine msn saying broncos have offered seibold $1 mil to walk aeay the article is from news corp ...

Tiger - thinking of you mate and hang in there. I know it's easier said than done, but you have good support people within your program and you also have us here at Thinkers.

U r a very gutsy man, to come up front on a National site, with what you've expressed. It may also open doors to others, who visit Thinker site and who just peruse our print and say zilch.

Take care Cobber, take small steps at a time and Keep Well.
Big Pete

That was to walk away...

Gr8 story there Butcher - like it, amongst other things with ales.
My first beer I had in Qld was a XXXX (fourex). My first beer as a lad in NSW was a Tooths Old (Kent Brewery).

Tugun also rings a good bell with me, as a mate of mines brother- in-law came from there and ended up at South Sydney Juniors, came to Bx to play/coach and is now back at Tugun living with his family. His surname was Rose.

I know what you may be thinking with SS Juniors in particular, last nights game. Well, I thought they'd have put up a better showing and I picked them. Next week another story with Storm on. I need to keep amongst the leaders at my work, so will be ruling with the head.

Keep well Butch.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Steely for remembering me.
Gutted isn't the word, with that scoreline. Truly thought they'd put in a good showing and take Souths full-on. Looking at Fox 4min replay, they were just letting loose mistakes beat them. But, what the heck - my team are the one they love to hate.
Next week another story with Storm on the agenda and of all things its the televised game on Nine. We usually dont go too bad against Storm, but we need a fully fit side to do it and I think Des is calling in reserves from The Chelsea Old Men's Home, to get us by.

I know how you are feeling, with The Nix bowing out of A-League.
Will be interesting to see who plays the final. Nix were my BIG improvers this year. I'd say the young kid, will be getting his bags ready for Europe now.

Keep well and have a good week.
Big Pete

Have a look back at the posts mate it was the Rocket man who called you to task over the Great Northern not me. Rocket suggested "you stop putting lemonade in your beer, you dribbler" and I suggest a visit to Specsavers wouldn't go astray.
You we're lucky to have been served a xxxx, the best beer in the country. Bet you are wishing you are a QLDer so you could enjoy it everyday. Your Tooheys new is close but not quite there. XXXX Gold is by far the biggest selling ale in the country. Personally I'll drink Great Northern but not by choice. QLD wins!

tigerholic's picture

Thanks Big Pete
Firstly I bet you are a small man weighing in around the 75-85 kgs. That was just this weird thought I had before I post.

Mate, from someone that has almost reached the end of a long journey where I am close to being fully fit again, this site does provide an outlet for some that need that small attachment.
I don't mind that I have opened up, I have been through the range of emotions and feelings, mate I had some low moments where I pondered what use I was to any future involvement. I am one of the lucky ones that have got through to the other side, I feel so much different to what I felt 15 months ago, I am ready to get back to work.

I feel for those that suffer from a mental health issue, its a tough journey that requires family, friends and colleagues to understand, listen and be there for those that are suffering.

I'm sorry for going on a bit but I feel like I can be of assistance to anyone that is suffering from similar condition to what I have been through. Thank you BigPete for your messages, it means a lot.

Christine- You were right about the Warriors, maybe next week you can tell me what your tips will be for next week,

Butcher- I tried to find where Mark may have got you a little riled up, it's all good mate. This year has been very different, when we first started Rocket and I were after this new bloke called "Butcher" but now here we are and we are all mates.

Folks, if I can finish with this, we are all headed to the same place as each other, none of us are any better than the next person regardless of how wealthy we are. The world will be a far better place if we all respected and accepted everyone. I have to say that being in the prison environment, it is a tough, rough and often violent situation and the best way to handle all of the shit that goes on is to enjoy your family, friends and life. Life is too short and footy is our way of relaxing and never will footy be bigger than life itself.

Tiger

Perhaps the best post of the year. You revealing your demons and coming to grip with them may just open it to to others on here who have problems but won't talk about it. Thank you mate it may just open the door for for someone to have a say and I can assure you, you will be heard and listened to. Yes it's a footy site but we like to look after all who venture here.

I need to apologise to Mark it was the other Queensland loser
I think it was the great northern crap was affecting my judgement
In your last post I was a little disappointed when you said folks if I can finish with this I had my lighter out ready but the song never came.

Great taste in music Mary
If only Tiger had that taste in beverages

Greetings football fans,

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 15. No huge surprises over the weekend, and a number of you managed to get 8 from 8 - including two of our top three. Well done to you all. By my reckoning at least 20 tipsters are still in contention for a top three finish - this could be the tightest tipping comp yet. If anyone sees any errors in the scoring just let me know.

I will have my previews and selections published on Tuesday and Wednesday.

All the best
