North Queensland Cowboys vs Sydney Roosters – Thursday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium
The Cowboys aren't under the same sort of pressure as their Queensland compatriots in the capital, but they are under pressure. They were comprehensively walloped by the Eels last week, which is a fair representation of where the Cowboys find themselves when compared with the better teams in the NRL. The Roosters are the only team to beat the Eels this season, so that tells you how hard this will be for the home team. That the Roosters have a few injury concerns, and some doubts about a whole bunch of their forwards (Liu, Cordnor, Waerea-Hargreaves) raises the Cowboys prospects a little, but not a lot.
Verdict – Roosters by 16
Result – Roosters 42 defeated Cowboys 16
Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – CBus Super Stadium
We all like to make fun of wingers from time to time (especially me), so it's only fair that I give one of them a wrap from time to time, especially when someone flies under the radar. Ken Maumalo is proper flying, and has been for some time now. In round eight he made ten tackle breaks, two line breaks, two tries and just shy of 300 metres. In a team that at times struggles to lift themselves, Maumalo is putting his hand up almost every week. I'm tipping the Warriors here, who could easily have the lions share of crowd support on Friday night on the Gold Coast. I'd be more confident if I knew Nikorima was cleared to play, but he looks more likely than not. For the Titans, Mitch Rein is in doubt, but Nathan Peats isn't far away and could be a surprise inclusion.
Verdict – Warriors by 4
Result – Titans 16 defeated Warriors 12
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – Bankwest Stadium
The Tigers have lost one and possibly two Leiluas for this clash, with Luciano injured and Joey getting reckless (to the surprise of almost no-one). Reckless Joey creates some selection challenges for the Tigers as Jennings is unavailable. There's some chance Chris Lawrence returns and slots into the centres in the interim. The Bunnies are without Braiden Burns for the rest of the year while they rebuild his kneecap. That said, the Bunnies backline are all class, and should do enough in what looks like one of the better games of footy this weekend.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 8
Result – Rabbitohs 18 defeated Tigers 10
Cronulla Sharks vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
The hamstrings of Matt Moylan, held together most weeks with good intentions and plumbers tape, have come undone once again - he'll be unavailable for a few weeks. Dugan might slot in at fullback, but Kennedy getting the call up seems more likely. Brian To'o is likely to be ruled out with an ankle injury for the Panthers, with Malakai Watene-Zelezniak the logical replacement. The Sharks have strung a few wins together but they have been playing in the shallow end of the pool of late. Now they have to take on a side that has beaten both the Roosters and the Storm this season. It's top shelf form, and the steadying hand (and feet) of Nathan Clearly can get the Panthers the points.
Verdict – Panthers by 4
Result – Panthers 56 defeated Sharks 24
Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium
They've laughed. They've cried. They've gaffed. They've tried. The only thing the Broncos haven't done is win. Plenty of us (me included) thought the Broncos could resurrect their season (to a point) during this run of games against easier sides. They started as favourite against the Titans and the Warriors and lost to them both, and once again they're the favourite to win this game too. They could win, they could win this by 40, but I'll tip the Bulldogs who have half the talent but twice the heart.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 2
Result – Broncos 26 defeated Bulldogs 8
Canberra Raiders vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – GIO Stadium
While the Raiders form in recent weeks has been below their best, they have shown for many seasons that, for reasons that are difficult to explain, they are the team with the wood on the Storm (including in round three in Melbourne). The Storm are backing up from an epic contest, and they are without Vunivalu, a vital cog for the Storm when they're trying to gain ground and momentum early in tackle counts. With the Storm now enjoying the weather on the Sunshine Coast a road trip to Canberra on a wet Saturday night doesn't sound like fun.
Verdict – Raiders by 4
Result – Storm 20 defeated Raiders 14
Newcastle Knights vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
The Knights return to Newcastle for the first time since round one when they kept the Warriors scoreless. This is harder but not impossible, although the injuries to Edrick Lee and Siona Mata'utia don't help. The forwards battle has me licking my lips, and the return of Nathan Brown gives, I think, the Eels a slight advantage. Parramatta coped without Mitchell Moses last weekend and I think they can do it again. It's the match of the round, and I'm happy this contest jagged the Sunday afternoon timeslot.
Verdict – Eels by 2
Result – Eels 10 defeated Knights 4
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
The suspension of Addin Fonua-Blake is difficult to ignore - he has been one of the form prop forwards in the NRL for quite some time. Taniela Paseka moves into the starting pack. The Dragons are showing signs of life, and while I agree that they are coming off a low base, the green shoots are there and I feel like what they have is the beginning of a competitive football team. They are the outsider in this contest, but I'm giving them a proper chance. Hunt at hooker and McInnes at lock makes sense to me.
Verdict – Dragons by 1
Result – Dragons 34 defeated Sea Eagles 4
Wally Lewis - round nine selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning
- Cowboys vs ROOSTERS
- Titans vs WARRIORS
- RABBITOHS vs Tigers
- Sharks vs PANTHERS
- BRONCOS vs Bulldogs
- Raiders vs STORM
- Knights vs EELS
- Dragons vs SEA EAGLES

Evenin Mark and nice and brisky, but doesn't make us frisky (rhymes).
Annesley felt at least a chance to level, but Garrick has had mixed fortunes from sideline. I know your feeling mate, but I also admire your stand for referee's (in past posts), as I had tickets in soccer and basketball as a ref.
Broncs really amaze me thus far. They have the players, but some aren't performing. Lazy pack of mothers if you ask me. Just going for a stroll in the park. I've picked them this round, but with Dogs lifting their efforts, it'll be a close one. Dragons are a mixed bag and who knows with them. But I'm hoping Manly can win it, as Drags at present, are only 2pts behind us on the ladder.
Cheers mate, keep well and another buffalo on the barbie. One day, we'll hopefully share one and a couple of "ginger" beers.

I always thought a bit of freezing weather sent one to bed a bit early.
Perfect opportunity to get a bit frisky with the missus.
A few cuddles, lots of hugs and some warming kisses.
Before long you'll find yourself in the blisses.
Do it right and you'll avoid doing the breakfast dishes!

Mark you got that wrong we as females get out of doing the dishes just for being on the receiving end in the first place , thats more like it ...

Evening Mark - slightly late as it is.
Very poetic from you.
Rarely much hitting the cot early for me these days/nights.
Mon-Fri I try to get there by 10pm.
I'll be avoiding the breakfast dishes in the morning, as I'm on community desk early. They'll all be asleep (including the pooch) when I depart.
Prediction here is rain for 4 days, we got showers through the day here. The of course, it becomes icy after with winds - that's the usual trend.
Cheers, keep well and have a nice weekend.

Hiya Big Pete, nice of you to comment about my "guesses".
I didn't really think anyone would be interested in my tips, as I'm not doing very well in the Thinkers competition.
How's the weather there? I'll bet it's a bit chilly.
Currently I'm getting my meals from Lite and Easy, so no need to go to the butcher. When I do go I'll say g'day from you.
I know Mark goes there and loves their meat, and another friend of mine has now started going there after I recommended them.
The weather in sunny Queensland is absolutely beautiful, shorts and t-shirt weather.
Good luck with your tips for the rest of the round.
Cheers, manyana.

Glad to see others like a bit of Depeche Mode 😉. Yeah mate, people are indeed people. The world’s a wonderful place ain’t it? No choice but to smile bro’ 😍. As far as my favourite DM song goes … I’d have to say it’s this one. There’s something about this one that has me hooked. Wish I could work it out.

@ Mr Ashford
No freakin’ way! Read your comment and as I clicked on the link I said to myself … “I bet Mark’s put up One Night in Bangkok”. Lo and behold, what pops up? Ha-Ha! You’re a champion mate 🤪.
Now for a little something, conversation-wise…
Not wishing to cause a “ruckus” but just wanna comment on the Reynolds-Mitchell affair in the Souths vs. Tigers match. Yeah, Reynolds’ “kick” was extremely careless but it was clearly unintentional. You could see Reynolds was bent over, seeing if Campbell Graham was OK and then Mitchell comes in from behind and gives Josh one on the jaw. Latrell mate, you don’t hit blokes from behind buddy. If you wanna hit someone, look ‘em in the eyes first and then (while I don’t recommend such behaviour) have a go if you really believe you have to. Very disappointing to be honest. And it’s gonna cost you big time at the judiciary. If not, then there’s something wrong with the system.
Sometimes Latrell just goes “overboard” I know. It used to “burn” me when he did this sort of thing while playing for the Roosters. He has so much talent that’s “untapped” and carrying on like this is a real shame (waste). I think he needs to ditch his manager (not that it’s got anything to do with it 😁) and be man enough to seek out some professional anger-management help. It’s just so frustrating to see him squander his talent. OK, enough said, I’m outta here. Peace 💖.
P.S. Spoiler Alert – next week’s SOTW is a beauty and will (should) hopefully appeal to most, if not all 🙏.

Ha-Ha glad you liked it mate, one of my favs.
On the Mitchell/Reynolds thing I know Josh has a bad record for grubby play but I don't think his kick to the head was intentional just striking for the ball. It looks bad and he'll get a week or two off. Temper tantrum Latrelle decided on some revenge and used a dog shot on Josh from behind while he was checking on the Rabbits player. Later he had another head high shot on another Souths player so he too will get a holiday. Even under Bennett he has failed to reign in his aggression.

Yes it was great to see the Broncs get a win but where has this been for the past 6 weeks. With all due respect the Bulldogs are hardly a scalp to be proud of. Lets hope this is the turn around we need to regain some respect in the comp. Next week the Tigers, will be interesting to see how they go.

I tell you one thing Mary the Broncos are putting good shelter over the Cowboys performances we're taking a lot of heat but the Cowboys are really awful to there's a big chance Green will beat siebold to the unemployment line
Submitted by Mary S on
Will agree Rocket, that Cowboys performances have been up & down like a yo-yo, and with the next 3 rounds being against Panthers, Manly & Raiders, they will need to get it together!!
I see Broncos will also have an interesting time with Tigers, Storm & Sharks their next 3 games.
Cheers,

Yes both our teams need to lift if they are going to make the finals.
With only 9 games to go in the regular season it's getting harder.
I don't rate the Broncs win over the Doggies but it may just give them a confidence boost to go on. You are obviously missing Micheal Morgan big time, any idea when he will be back?

I have been looking forward to the Eels/Knights game all day and wasn't disappointed. Sure there was plenty of errors from both teams but those forwards went at each other like gladiators from ancient Rome. I thought overall the best team won. In the losing team I thought Quentin Pongia was a stand out. Also noted your "naughty boy" Brownie played hard but played nice. Congrats on the win.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Best part Mark, he didn't give away a penalty or got on report, He's the Messiah!!!!!!!!!! Bit put out with the reffing, especially that Ponga in the first half, it was a penalty, but not allowing the play to roll on for 4 tackles and then call it back, nor allow the player to remain on the field for 5-8 minutes, attempt a conversion and the HIA him off. Rubbish, yet when D. Brown got the exact same treatment in the second half, not a peep. Poor effort from Sutton. But I was packing death for the last 20 as we seemed to have nothing in attack but our defense held strong, it was nice to see the BOYS grind out a win when in the past we would have hemorrhaged points in those last 20.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
Have to agree with you Mark. Brown had a good game for the Eels but I thought Gutherson was the difference between the two sides.
Agree with you too Baggy about the refereeing. No consistency. Been like that all weekend. Warriors badly dudded by inconsistency in their game. Two boys go up for a bomb. Mid air tackle ruled against the Warriors. Penalty Titans. Down the other end same thing but Warriors told two guys challenging for the ball play on. Bunker robbed them of a possible try too. Harsh call according to every commentator. Bunker also got it wrong in Raiders Storm game with the sin-binning of Simonsen of the Raiders. Another very very poor call. Is the Bunker looking at the same pictures as us fans???

I had a bad week tipping the nrl gods didn't like me this week ...
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Steel, I think that they just pull up a random try between the teams from the last 5 years and judge on that. How is it not advantageous for the BOYS to score a try from a Newcastle infringement, the Reed dive over in the second half? Strange rules, interpretation and as you said consistency.

Great win from the mighty Dragons! Spine looked really good. I really hope we are on our way up from here. We've got the Dogs Next Week, definitely a winnable game and we should win that one, yes we've given them their only win, but we are a different team now and are very well settled! Up the Saints!
Cheers!!!

Greetings football fans
I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping competition after round nine.
A fair bit of movement (up and down) in the tipping comp this weekend, but congrats to COSSEY POSSE and Johnny Awesome who both managed perfect rounds. Outstanding work by you both.
I'll have the round ten page published as soon as I can...just doing a bit of tweaking now that we have our updated schedule through to round 12.
If anyone sees any errors with the scores just let me know.

Hi Mark,
In answer to your query -
Michael Morgan looks to be another 6-8 weeks before playing again according to the following article, as he had an infection in his shoulder, that has delayed recovery from the op.

Mary S & 'a"
Seems to me as "a" has said it's the season. I see it as almost as important as when JT retired. Being selfish I guess he won't be available for origin either. As both our clubs struggle we can only hope for a better year next year. Did see Kevvie Walters on an interview a few days ago and he said he was confident with QLD origin this year. Wonder what he has up his sleeve.
