Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium
The extended break has given a number of key Broncos players the opportunity to overcome injuries, with Brodie Croft, Corey Oates and newly minted captain Alex Glenn almost certain starters. Matt Lodge is recovering from a knee injury more quickly than anyone imagined, but I'd call him an unlikely inclusion. If he does it's a big help, with Fifita and Pengai Junior unavailable. The Eels are hoping Reed Mahoney can be passed fit to play, but I'd suggest he's unlikely to play too. Rhys Davies flies north with the squad as his replacement in that all-important number nine jersey. I've had plenty of opportunities to watch the Broncos train recently (what else am I going to do?), and they seem sharp and fit. The Eels could be sharp and fit too, but I can't get across the border to find out. Two undefeated teams to restart the season, and while the Broncos will tell you they aren't thinking about that historic 58-0 loss to the Eels in the finals last season, they are. The barbs from that loss still sting, and with redemption on their mind they'll be out to prove they care.
Verdict – Broncos by 4
Result – Eels 34 defeated Broncos 6
North Queensland Cowboys vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Queensland Country Bank Stadium
Michael Morgan is recovering from shoulder surgery, but otherwise it's been plain sailing for the home side leading into this game. Clifford joins Drinkwater in the halves in the interim. Slightly more chaos on the Gold Coast, with the back injury to Brimson a major blow, and Kallum Watkins granted a release and returning to the UK while his Dad battles coronavirus. Note that he's already signed up with the Toronto Wolfpack which is slightly unusual. The Titans are one of many teams yet to win a game this season, and I can't imagine them winning this either.
Verdict – Cowboys by 20
Result – Cowboys 36 defeated Titans 6
Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Bankwest Stadium
The oldest rivalry in the game is back on the box on Friday night, and while the venue is unusual and the crowd is absent, there will be plenty of feeling on the paddock. The Rabbitohs have had a few issues along the way. James Roberts has taken time out to gather his thoughts and silence his demons. He's been training this week - I'm a lousy therapist but I suspect he's better off playing than not playing. Cody Walker definitely won't play again until round five - you just can't kick people in the street like we could in the 'good old days'. You'd think those two would be making the headlines, but most of the talk is centred around Latrell Mitchell squaring off against his former club. There's talk he'll play at fullback and I still have some doubts about that, but Wayne Bennett knows slightly more about the game (and Mitchell) than I do. If he's focused and engaged he'll be bloody fantastic, but he does have a history of drifting in and out of games. The Chooks haven't won a game this year, and with a shortened draw their climb back into the top eight has become more difficult. That said, I think they'll start that ascent with a win here.
Verdict – Roosters by 2
Result – Roosters 28 defeated Rabbitohs 12
New Zealand Warriors vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium
If the Warriors aren't your favourite NRL team, this is the season to make them your second favourite NRL team, because without them we may not have a season at all. The whole squad have agreed to up stumps and live in a Tamworth bubble for as long as it takes. Despite the sacrifice, the relocation has proven to be something of a curse thus far. Tevaga, Keighran and Au Mau have all been injured at training and won't be available for quite some time. Roache was waylaid in New Zealand until he passed a Covid-19 test, but he has arrived with just enough time to lace on the boots. Fusitu'a is still in New Zealand. While all this has been happening, the Dragons have had time to get some injured players fit again, with McInnes and Sims (Tariq and Korbin) all named to play. I'm feeling for the injured Jazz Tevaga - with a name like that I'm not sure how welcome he'll feel in the country music capital of Australia.
Verdict – Dragons by 10
Result – Warriors 18 defeated Dragons 0
Cronulla Sharks vs Wests Tigers – Saturday afternoon – Bankwest Stadium
Cronulla haven't won a game this season but Scomo and the rest of the Sharkies enthusiasts are getting all giddy because they've jagged an easy draw for the rest of the season, and the break has allowed a number of players to overcome injuries. Dugan, Xerri and Nikora will all play on Saturday. There are reports that Moylan will play but I doubt it - history tells us that both Dugan and Moylan can't be fit and ready to play at the same time. The Sharks have also lost a Morris brother to the Roosters. There's been much less chatter about the Tigers, but the break allowed Mbye and Brooks to get fit for round three, and Harry Grant is likely to start after his much-discussed player switch-a-roo with Momirovski. With Grant coming through one of the best systems in the game, and learning under the wing of Cameron Smith, I expect he'll have a positive impact on the Tigers in that all important dummy-half role. The Sharks look stronger in the forwards, and that's usually where games are run and won, but I'm picking the Tigers in what would be something of an upset result.
Update: Xerri has been stood down for impersonating Ben Johnson. I guess that explains all the land speed records he's been breaking on the track.
Verdict – Tigers by 4
Result – Tigers 28 defeated Sharks 16
Melbourne Storm vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – AAMI Park
Because the NRL are getting cleverer, every undefeated team this season has to play another undefeated team in round three. The Storm get an opportunity to let Victorians know they exist while the AFL try and get their schmoo in order (a special shout out to AFL legend Tim Watson* for not even realising there is a Victorian team in the NRL). One of the reasons the Storm never lose in round one is because they want to perform while the AFL isn't around to suck all the air out of the room. I expect they'll be primed for another big one. Note that Brandon Smith (aka the Chuck Norris of the NRL) is ready to play even though he broke his actual face not that long ago. He's a besser block in a purple jersey that bloke. Potentially the game of the round.
* Tim gets legend status for being an above average competitor in a sport played in Victoria and the three least populous states of Australia (one of the lowest populated countries on Earth). I can't believe this Tim Watson doesn't have a planet named after him.
Verdict – Storm by 1
Result – Raiders 22 defeated Storm 6
Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium
Oh the city's cold and empty. No-one's around to judge me. I can't see Cleary when you're gone.
The Panthers are without Nathan Cleary who was blinded by the lights and won't be back until round five. A quick lesson for the kids - mobile phones truly suck. He's a huge out, but I'm excited to see Matt Burton get a chance because this bloke is a deadset footballer. Put that name in your black book...and don't let him have a mobile phone. The other key omission is for the Knights, with Kalyn Ponga also suspended for two weeks for a shoulder charge - probably more dangerous than a Tik Tok dancing challenge...or is it?
Verdict – Panthers by 4
Result – Panthers 14 drew with Knights 14
Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday night – Central Coast Stadium
While the Panthers lost Cleary for two weeks for dancing with young girls, the Bulldogs lost two players for something much worse. A quick lesson for the kids - don't be a bl00dy tool. As is generally the case, the Bulldogs defence has been great but they continue to struggle in attack. Foran may return against his former club which helps, but I can't see them outscoring that Manly backline. That said, Manly could be rusty in attack after the extended break, so a tight low-scoring contest wouldn't surprise.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4
Result – Sea Eagles 32 defeated Bulldogs 6

Queensland may have found their number 9.
He's very good. I wish I knew he was going to play when I put my tips in :-)

I'm happy for him to play origin but only at the end of the season. Got to stop the crash play though.

Finally, wasn't sure we could buy a try with all the ball we had in the 20. Good on ya Jennings.

It was hard tipping against Eels tonight, but before everything shut down I swore I wouldn't tip against the Broncs again in a hurry.. Seems they are not the same team that won their first 2 rounds earlier this year? Eels more than deserve the win tonight!

BTW did anyone see that tackle on Gutho, that was magic.

Morning Folks
I watched last nights game with the same amount of anticipation as any Broncos or Eels fans. Well done Baggy, your Eels were on top from the get go last night, enjoy the win mate and it looks like being a great year for your team.
For me Croft was a weak link with his kicking game, every kick was ordinary and straight to the fullback or winger every time, there was no height in them and his players didm't have a chance to put pressure on the catcher. I know he scored that great try but that was all he done.
Bronco's lacked a leader, someone to guide them around the park, fair enough it was the first game for 9 weeks or so but that goes for the Eels as well and look how they played.
Anyway folks, great to have the footy back, not sure about the one referee or the 6 again for ruck infringements, time will tell.
Has anyone seen my old mate Rocket Ryan, he has been a bit quiet last night. The shorter season puts a greater emphasis on each win, so much more important to get some early wins in the bank.
Have a great day
Tiger

1.273 million watched the game last night - the biggest audience for a regular season NRL match in six years.

Very disappointed with the Broncos last night. Milford and Boyd should be dropped. They were lethargic, uninspiring and walking around the field like they didn't want to be there. There is no soul in the team any more. They couldn't even be bothered warming up on the field.

And Boss, don't forget what the have all been saying, 26 years since the BOYS won 3-0 to start a season. But that viewership is awesome for the game. Lets hope it kicks on.

Pretty sure that watching audience will increase more when the longest rivalry in NRL history kicks off tonight
Great win baggy but they need to keep consistent and also be competitive when they play the top 3 sides

Congrats to your team for that convincing win last night. Your boys were sharp, played to the rules and gave my Broncs another humiliating lesson. My Broncs looked like a second rate team who had spent too much time reading their own press. I know it's only one game into the new season but, am I worried? you bet I am.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
It was good to get a win, and I am very interested in how the penalty driven teams of the Storm and Raiders go with the never ending tackle count, instead of resetting their defensive line. Butcher, don't I know it, we also have to find a way to win when we are not at home or in an empty stadium with out a hostile crowd, I'll take the hype seriously when that happens. As long as we towel Manly as well as they toweled us a few years back, that will make me happy.

You and I and many others tipped the Broncs last. Do you have any insights into their poor performance or were the Eels just too good.

Cowboys did to Titans, what Eels did to Broncos - great result (from a Cowboys fan that is!!!)
Time for the Roosters/Rabbitohs clash.
Cheers to all,

Well done Cowboys but they only beat the Titans

@Mark Ashford
I think you can forgive the Broncos for that one. The Eels are a good team, and once they dominated possession it was hard for the Broncos to get back in the game. If they can get Fifita and Pangai Jnr back on the park they'll be a force again.
Three games down and in all three the victor has won by a decent margin. With the rule change and one referee I think we will see that regularly, at least until the teams get fitter and used to the new normal.
Submitted by The Butcher on
I don’t know if you can forgive them for that one every team has had the same amount of time off and all knew about the new rule changes. I originally would have picked the broncos if Fifita and TPJ played but they still would of lost.
Seibold would of had a plan A and a plan B but the halves had a plan F.
Moses and Brown dominated on the back of great offloading forwards. It’s the only score line so far that has surprised me I even saw a player with grey hair cross the try line (M Jennings)
The broncos have the luxury of playing on your home ground you can’t throw away that opportunity.

Don't know if I can forgive that performance (or Siebolds) due to a couple of missing players. Do you recall the Broncs of old when no matter what the scoreboard they played hard right to the 80th minute and more often than not pulled a miracle win in the dying minutes.
Today's Broncs just seem to give up as soon as they get behind. I know the Eels were red hot but Siebold needs to get this out of his team.

I thought Latrelle's defense was poor as were his attacking options. Thought he may have showed a bit more against his old club. He's been dubbed "the next Greg Inglis" boy does he have a way to go.
See JWH has been charged for a high tackle but will escape with a $1600 fine, with his record are they kidding? Also saw him constantly leading with his forearm into the throats of tackling players. Fair dinkum this guy will kill or seriously damage someone soon.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
This is the question, who is to blame, the player or the manager? I'm sure that his manager has over inflated his worth and therefore killed his potential. I think that he should have stayed at the Roosters and worked to become like the man he is touted to be similar to. He won't get there unless he pulls himself together and works hard, but here's to hoping that he doesn't become a Blue at the end of the season.
Submitted by The Butcher on
While I’m watching the tigers v Sharks game they’re both used up their captains challenge.
I can’t remember a challenge in the Eels v broncos match. So does that mean both teams were happy with every refs call?
Submitted by mark ashford on
The Butcher
Being the first round of the revised I expected a few upsets and we do.
Broncos being undone (partly) by the new six again rule.
Souths / Roosters can't remember it being called even though both teams laid all over each other. Didn't see any of the other games but you're saying Tigers/Sharks used all their challenges, did any change things. Warriors flogged the Dragons, who saw that coming. Just hope the reffing is consistant as we progress.

I wanted to back the Warriors, but over thought it and went with the Dragons. Good on the Warriors for a great win, holding any team to 0 is a great feat.

Baggy,
Based on the first two weeks you'd never have tipped the Warriors in a 100 years. Zip points in the first game and a penalty try in the second. Add this to leaving NZ to set up camp in OZ and you can make that a thousand years.
The Dragons are a bloody awful team considering their roster. Orgin reps Frizzell, Vaughan & Hunt. International Graham. Handy Sims, Norman and hooker McInnes you'd expect better. Surely McGregor is a dead man walking.

After the Rosters/Raiders game, one of the commentators said "Someone better go and check Craig Bellamy's blood pressure!"
The Storm players will get a good serve over stupid mistakes, particularly in their scoring end, but the Raiders were relentless and deserved the win.
A fast and furious game!!
Cheers,
Mary

Afternoon All, hello to you too Butcher
I am a very happy Tigers fan today, was worried for a period in the second half. The Tigers showed some grit to hang tough and not give in like they would have last year.
All of the boys performed well,
Does anyone have a spare parachute for Rocket, he is about to plummet down the ladder faster than the space rocket went up this morning.
Looking forward to the last two games of the round, having a few beers and a lamb roast on the webber.
Take care folks.

Just finished watching Panthers-v- Knights. What a ripper of a game.
The final result of a draw after golden point was probably a fitting result giving each team a point. Gotta feel for those goal kickers. The Panthers missed one to the left and one to the right with the third hitting the post and bouncing back into play. All in all an enjoyable game to watch.
My tipping so far is 1 out of 7, think I should give up now.

It was a great second half Mark. I thought the Panthers would win in a canter after the early game-ending injuries to Pearce & Watson. In fact Newcastle should have won after butchering that "dead cert" try in golden point.
Have thoroughly enjoyed the return of the great game this weekend!! Shucks even the Warriors won....

Great effort by the tigers. I can see why your grinning you’ve got an amazing leader in Benji,a halfback as big as a jockey but has a heart like Phar lap and two young hookers so good that prince Andrew would get excited.

Yes I agree the Knights should have won the loss of Pierce & Watson was a major factor. Don't forget Nathan the Panthers main playmaker was also out. The bombed try near the end had me shaking my head. There was a three metre gap in the Panthers line all he had to do was go for it, but chose to throw a pass behind his winger.
Congratulations to your Warriors, maybe they should be here permanently.

Know this is not exactly footy but just watched the Josh Reynolds 60 minutes program. I've never been a fan of Josh (the grub) but after watching this my heart has gone out to him. I never thought Josh was the sharpest tool in the shed and like a lot of footballers he was attracted to a pretty girl with a pumped up body. But this is different.
Arabella Del Busso (one of her many names) is a predator using her looks to extract money from many men including Josh Reynolds.
