Canterbury Bulldogs vs North Queensland Cowboys – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium
ANZ Stadium can appear cavernous and empty at the best of times, but especially so on Thursday night. This marks the first spectator-free game for the season, and for that reason alone it will make for interesting viewing. Two sides coming off a loss, but the Bulldogs probably impressed while the Cowboys disappointed. Defensively, the Bulldogs are, like their coach, a tough unit. You would expect much of the same in round two. Their attack will likely improve, but will it improve enough? The Cowboys showed glimpses of form with the ball, but were guilty of pushing plays where restraint was the order of the day. Perhaps the occasion got the better of them - in a place like Townsville the build-up before the opening of that new stadium would have been immense. I can't imagine the scoreboard attendant will be busy, but the Cowboys can do enough to bounce back here.
Verdict – Cowboys by 4
Result – Cowboys by 8
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
Rugby League is often a game of two halves, and in this particular case, the two halves are Ben Hunt and Nathan Cleary. Ben Hunt put his hand up and owned his contribution to the Dragons loss in round one, while Cleary was instrumental in the Panthers come-from-behind win over the defending premiers. Cleary has always been a wise old head on young shoulders, and we saw that in spades in round one. I wish every club had one of him. Heck, I wish every club had two of them. The Panthers should be heading into this game filled with self-confidence, while the Dragons could be filled with self-doubt. With that in mind, I think you all know who I'm tipping here.
Verdict – Panthers by 10
Result – Panthers by 4
Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
Green shoots, and then some, for the Broncos with an impressive and unexpected win over the Cowboys in Townsville. The new combinations impressed, and we have to assume that Croft and Isaako will continue to improve. Haas and Fifita look set for an enormous year, but Pangai drops out of the forwards rotation for a month. He's not the first enthusiastic forward to let enthusiasm get the better of him - some time spent focusing on his discipline would be time well spent. Alex Glenn returns, and he is disciplined. The Rabbits, like the Broncos, will improve after Mitchell gets some more time in the number one jersey. In the battle of the coaches, Bennett had the last laugh (assuming he laughs) with two victories over Seibold last season. I think Seibold will be smiling on Friday night.
Verdict – Broncos by 8
Result – Broncos by 4
New Zealand Warriors vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium
First things first - for those that hadn't noticed the Warriors have re-located this game to the Gold Coast, but their future in the competition beyond this round is uncertain. Herbert and Hiku have already returned home for family reasons, and the rest of the squad indicated they are likely to do the same after this weekend. In that sense, they have all but played their hand, and one wonders if their hearts will be in this on Saturday. It's possible they'll come out and play like globetrotters, in which case this would be the game of the round. It's more possible, much more possible, that they'll hardly turn up at all. Croker and Nicoll-Klokstad suffered head knocks for the Raiders in round one, but are likely to play. Raiders for mine.
Verdict – Raiders by 14
Result – Raiders by 14
Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval
Another relocated game, perhaps with less consequence than the Warriors/Raiders clash, the Chooks have decided to move this game to Balmain rather than travel to the Central Coast. Manly are expected to name an unchanged line-up, but if they turn up wearing facemasks it would be hard to tell. They held their own against the Storm last weekend for much of the game and I'm willing to back them here in what would be quite an upset. While it seems unlikely that the Chooks would be 0 from 2 to start the season, this season is really weird, and Cordnor won't be back for another week (assuming we have another week). I honestly think the Sea Eagles can win the premiership (assuming we have a premiership), so if that be true they can prove it by knocking off the champs.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 1
Result – Sea Eagles by 1
Cronulla Sharks vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
Looks a gritty contest on paper, and it usually is on the paddock when these two face off. They both bring an uncompromising style of play to the game, and while I admire their tenacity it can at times be hard to watch. There won't be a crowd of Sharkies fans there to boo the Storm every time they 'bend the rules', so definitely no home ground advantage here. The Storm don't really enjoy playing the Sharks because it's a little like staring into a mirror for 80 minutes, but they do have the better roster, and with Dugan and Moylan injured (naturally) the Sharks are much more predictable in attack. Cameron Smith wants to go home, but he's a professional, so he'll get the job done and head to the airport.
Verdict – Storm by 4
Result – Storm by 2
Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium
While the Eels attack struggled to gain an ascendancy they should find the Titans defence a little easier to crack. There are five (yes...five) Titans who may or may not play on Sunday (Roberts, Proctor, Fotuaika, Brimson and Boyd). We will probably have some of them, and we could even have all of them, but with so many uncertainties the easiest thing to do is tip their opponent.
Verdict – Eels by 10
Result – Eels by 40
Wests Tigers vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval
Of all the empty stadiums this weekend, this is the one that might sadden me the most. For mine, there are few greater joys than watching a Sunday afternoon game at Leichhardt Oval - at least I'll get a good view of all those trees. Both teams impressed with victories in round one, but the injury to Luke Brooks is a huge blow for the Tigers. It puts a lot of pressure on Benji Marshall (which he won't mind one bit), but he's easier to manage when the team he's playing in has less moving parts. Mbye might be back for this game, which would help, but I'm with a settled Knights line-up that didn't concede a point in round one.
Verdict – Knights by 8
Result – Knights by 18
Wally Lewis - round two selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or Thursday morning
- Bulldogs vs COWBOYS
- Dragons vs PANTHERS
- Broncos vs RABBITOHS
- Warriors vs RAIDERS
- ROOSTERS vs Sea Eagles
- Sharks vs STORM
- TIGERS vs Knights
- Titans vs EELS

ROFLMAO. Really, out of all the last 16 games, all incidents, all issues, all missed and caught indiscretions and you go after the most innocent one. What about the tackle on Sivo last weekend by the Bulldogs winger? The Croft incident, which has taken a talented young player out for 4-8 weeks? Any of the high penalty counts given away blatantly on the try line by all teams? None of this raises a peep from you, yet here you are now with an axe to grind.................................... I think that speaks for itself.
Submitted by The Voyeur on
No your reaction and ridiculous argument to justify today’s behaviour speaks for itself. Read anything I have posted today, nothing says I have said any other behaviour you refer to is ok.....I am focusing on the track record of a thug....he just happens to play for parramatta, and does these sort of cheap shots every week.....

Hi Thinker,
Congratulations on 8/8 + correct margin in a couple.
Looks as if we may have a few more with a perfect score this round - just looking at them now!!
Cheers,
Mary

I think Voyeur's point was Brown is a serial offender versus other players who may be involved in one off indiscretions. There are bad tackles week in week out in the NRL but Brown has history. Just because he plays for your Eels is irrelevant. Adam Blair plays for the Warriors and is a thug with a history of late tackles littered throughout his career at a number of clubs. On another note....locks don't sprint...haha

True Steel, forwards only amble don't they. The problem I had with the point is that he is not a serial offender. People like Josh McGuire is a problem, N. Brown is in the same boat as Dylan Napa. They play hard and give it their best at all times. Sometimes it goes wrong, other times it is fine. When it goes right they are lauded as the second coming, when it goes sour they are a "serial offender". If you watch the last try from Sunday the only person coming across while everyone one else stood still was N. Brown to support D. Brown. I have always had a problem with the way people only shape the narrative to fit their perspective, maybe why I dislike journalists. I had several issue with the ref's on Sunday and most of them were when the Titans got dudded. The Captains Challenge in the second half was a good starting point, it was a strip! He pretended his hands were out and used his head on the ball, how did they miss that? If it was a genuine bad tackle I'm happy to throw him under the bus, but it wasn't.

Well, as a famous cartoon pig once said "bdep bdep bdep thats all folks"
At least until the 1st of may but I fear it will be much longer.
Interesting exchange between The Voyeur and Baggy Gee. I did watch the game but either didn't see or can't remember the tackle in question.
I did a Wiki search and found he has a bit of history but nothing like the previous NSW captain one P. Gallen. He is a bit younger than Paul so has some time to catch up.
But seriously there has always been bad boys in our game, some of us love them some hate them. Personally I detest foul play but am happy to leave it to the judiciary to sort out.
Now I would like to ask you all to please stay in touch here if you can.

No matter where this ends up I do admire your support of your club and it's players. The Broncs had a few naughty boys over the years, yes as our friend Steel has pointed out Adam Blair and you Josh Maguire and no doubt others. As long as these guys wore the Broncs jersey I would defend them, as soon as they went to other clubs they became thugs.
That is what a supporter is all about. Call it one-eyed, biased or just plain dumb but that's what we do.

That is the point of the tribalism of Football. You have to nail your colors to the mast and then defend that choice until dishonor, death is never an option, which is why SoO is such a big thing. I try to be even handed these days instead of that which annoys me, and I do attempt to find good in everyone. The passion shown by everyone on here to supporting their team has to be commended, we are all joined by your love of the game first and foremost, our choice of teams allows for the different flavors to come through.

I'll be here and glad to hear you will be too. The SOTW can grow and maybe some of us can offer a joke or two (clean ones of course) to give us a laugh in these troubled times.
Butcher you have a way with words some more of those anecdotes would be welcome. Ignore Rocket I'm sure he loves your stories.

Mark & Baggy,
It's pretty obvious I'm the opposite of you blokes. I can see fault in my own team and speak out accordingly. I don't think you guys see a lot in the media over there about the Warriors but some of the on field performances coupled with a hell of a lot of poor back room decisions has turned me into a bitter and twisted "supporter" which is sad. When you support/die for your club and get nothing back it hurts. The worm turned for me when they let Ivan Cleary go after he took them to the 2011 GF. I've just read Simon Mannering's autobiography and he too labours this point throughout the book which says a lot coming from one of the best to don the jersey. We signed known thug Adam Blair from Brisbane and not sure if you recall a season or two back Mark, Blair pretty much cost you the game versus the Storm in a preliminary final with two cheap shots. Momentum was with the Broncos who I think were leading but the penalties conceded pretty much swung the momentum and the rest is history.
Baggy this link is for you. As you said Brown is not a serial offender but given you are the opposite of me I understand your comment. Or maybe since this article was written in 2016 when he played for Souths it doesn't count....haha

I certainly feel for you over your Warriors. The decision to replace Cleary had plenty of us on this side of the ditch scratching our heads. I wonder if the fact that RU is NZ's favourite game and tends to draw the cream of the crop leaving the leftovers to RL? just a thought.
Now that the season is cancelled (for now), I'm going to have to go back to watching re-runs of Star Trek and heavens forbid Married at first sight. This show is an insult to our intelligence and now that #9 has no footy we'll probably see it run back to back. Keep yourself well mate and more importantly keep the faith.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
You are right it comes from Souths and therefore not applicable. LOL Thank you for that article Steel, it proves my point, consistency!!!! He should have been punished and punished hard for being an idiot, and last year he was a freaking idiot. Got suspended and came back hard to make up for it, pushed the envelope and nearly got suspended again. A bloody Moron, (Maroon?????). I just find the incident that he gets pinged for and what was discussed, there was no intent in what happened, he was committed, like Reed was in Round one where Lewis's leg got caught on his shoulder, laughable. I'm sure that we could find another report able incident during the game where he deserved to be on report. Not trying to paint him as a saint, just defending a committed player trying to stop a try.

I must say to you the word "moron" should never be used in the same sentence as "maroon". I know there are ugly rumours circulating that this is the origin (pun intended) of our team's name. I would like to assure you NSW supporters, it's just a colour, nothing more. A bloke said to me in the pub the other day (before it was shut down) "did you know where the name "blues" came from" I said it's a colour mate. He said "no" its all the fights they started at the beginning of SoO games.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Lol I do like the reasoning behind why we are the blues. Done, I'll do my best to keep those two words apart in the future.

Cheers mate, I knew you are a gentleman.
I must admit I'm a bit lost at the moment as no doubt most of us are.
I was so looking forward to this season and it began so well for both of our teams. Broncs on two wins as are your Eels who are on top by for and against. Who knows where this would have ended.

After watching the Broncos take care of the Bunnies, and also the Cowboys, they really took me by surprise after losing so many players during the off season and picking up Kahu who was injured already. Lets hope that there is a good balance of games shortly to really prove that the premiers were the best, and not just lucky with their draw. Take care of yourself over there on the island.

Thanks for your kind words. I'm certainly taking care here on Bribie Island. Keeping the advised distance and making sure personal hygiene is number one. We have one of the oldest demographics here in QLD and if it gets a hold God knows what will happen.
So far we have only one confirmed case and that lady is fully recovered and back home with her hubby and both are self isolating.
I did hear the NRL is looking at a restart on September 1 depending how we are going and playing a shortened season for a month or two.
Don't matter to me as I'll be just as keen in 2021,
Keep you and your family well.

To All
OK I'll post the first joke, it's simple, short and a bit corney but it's a start.
A policeman patrolling a Brisbane suburb saw this guy walking down the street with a gate under his arm. He said "where did you get that?"
The guy replied " I stole it" The policeman took no further action as he feared the guy may take offence.
I know I know it's silly but it's a start.

Ahhhhhhhh nice and simple word play. always the best.
A garbo, sees a man outside on his morning run in front of a house that he hasn't collected the bin from in a while, so he asks the man, "Where's your bin?" the man replies, "I've been away." The garbo shakes his head and says " No, where's your wheelie bin", to which the man replies, "I've really been in jail, i just didn't want to tell you."
