Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Thursday night – AAMI Park
It's the very first game of the 2021 NRL season, and as a tipster it's always nice to get the first game of the year right. There are genuinely compelling reasons to pick the home side in this first outing:
- The Storm almost never lose in round one...if ever
- The Rabbitohs almost never win in Melbourne...if ever
- The Storm haven't played a game in Melbourne for a very long time, and they'll be keen to put on a show for how ever many Melburnians are allowed to front up to AAMI Park.
But...I'm an idiot. I usually take trial form with a large grain of salt but the Rabbitohs were red hot in the Charity Shield match (take note that the Storm were pretty red hot in the trials too). The Bunnies have also been able to name a near full-strength line-up for their first outing, and their back-line, with the recruitment of Mansour and Marshall off the bench, looks dynamite. Meanwhile the Storm are set to begin their life without Cameron Smith, and he's been their captain and leader, on and off the field, for well over a decade. This isn't the first time the Storm have had to cope with the retirement or departure of a big name player, but Smith and his steadying influence has been there to help them move on. Now Smith has moved on, and it's almost impossible to know how much of a hole that leaves behind. I think it's a big hole, and with Harry Grant injured it's a very big hole. I'm not consigning the Storm to the also-rans in 2021...not even close. Their spine should be the envy of the competition, and their forward pack is almost entirely international standard. They can still win the premiership this season and they can still win this game, but I'll take them on here.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 1
Result – Storm 26 defeated Rabbitohs 18
Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium
I could be looking like quite the fool by Friday night. The Knights are a very warm favourite to win this at home, but their line-up for this game looks positively awful. They've cobbled together a back-line without Ponga (knee), Green (knee), Lee (foot) and Hunt (hamstring). Their replacements (in order) are Hoy, Mann, To'a and Shibasaki - handy footballers each and every one of them, but replacements nonetheless. The Bulldogs had a few racing the clock to be available in round one, but have named Napa, Averillo, Faitala-Mariner and Cotric as fit and ready to roll. Handy inclusions there. Cotric, Allan and Flanagan all slot straight into the starting back-line for the Dogs and I expect they'll improve the Dogs in attack, which has been an apparent weakness for a few seasons now. Another upset on the cards.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 2
Result – Knights 32 defeated Bulldogs 16
Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
The Broncos are on their longest consecutive losing streak ever, and it's hard to see them breaking that run of outs on Friday night. Their strength last year (if you could call it that) was their forwards, but Fifita and Ofahengaue have moved on and Haas is cooling his heels until round four after showing more ticker in a Kingscliff Hotel than he offered in game 3 of the Origin series last year. Their one shining light in the backs last season was Kotoni Staggs but he's unavailable for quite some time. The very talented but very young Tesi Nui has been switched across the park to fill in. Croft has won what I will call a reprieve in the halves but he has to lift. They all have to lift. The Eels on the other hand are rolling into town with a very strong seventeen. They gave the Broncos a footballing lesson early in the season last year, and I fear we will see a repeat of that. The new Broncos coach has his hands full, but at least you know he will give it his all.
Verdict – Eels by 10
Result – Eels 24 defeated Broncos 16
New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – Central Coast Stadium
A proper game of football here. The Warriors, as they almost always do, have a team that can beat anyone on their day, bolstered by some key recruits in the forwards (Fonua-Blake and Murdoch-Masila) while the Titans were one of the form teams of the NRL late last season, winning five games in a row and just falling short of a top eight berth. Joining the Titans this season are Fifita, Fa'asuamaleaui and former Warrior Patrick Herbert. Expectations are high on the Gold Coast, but with good reason. This is a genuine test of their prospects first up, but the Warriors have some issues finding a dummy half. Wayde Egan has been named but there are doubts around his fitness, and it's not easy to hide an injury in that position.
Verdict – Titans by 4
Result – Warriors 19 defeated Titans 6
Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday afternoon – Sydney Cricket Ground
Sometimes smart people make dumb choices, and Tommy Turbo is proof of same after accepting a challenge from a random on the Manly Corso to a sprint race after a night out. His hamstring, as it's prone to do, wasn't happy with the decision either and let him down accordingly. He'll be out for as long as it takes, and I think his inclusion or exclusion from the Sea Eagles has more impact than any other individual in any other team. Manly are that much more manageable when he's not there. As such, much of the expectation falls on the old halves duo together again - Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran. They're a great couple, but it's been a while and, like a said, containing those two will be easier without the Turbo lurking behind them. The Roosters don't seem quite as onimous as they have in previous seasons, but they're still at or near the benchmark when it comes to the NRL. Many of us are waiting for Sam Walker to get a chance with the Chooks. Not this weekend, but when he does he's worth watching. Too good the tricolours.
Verdict – Roosters by 10
Result – Roosters 46 defeated Sea Eagles 4
Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Panthers Stadium
I've a big wrap on Todd Payten as a coach. If the Cowboys stick with him I'm sure they can build a squad that can threaten for a premiership in the years ahead...but not his year. Penrith were dominant for most of last year (except perhaps for one half of the grand final). Their kids should be even better this year. Contenders.
Verdict – Panthers by 14
Result – Panthers 24 defeated Cowboys 0
Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium
The Tigers have added Tamou, Ofahengaue and James Roberts to their roster, but I just cannot warm to their side. I've struggled to warm to their side for years to be honest. There's nothing wrong with them, they just don't get me enthused, and they don't give me any indication that they can do any better than ninth. The Raiders are better than ninth. Much better.
Verdict – Raiders by 8
Result – Raiders 30 defeated Tigers 12
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
The last time the Sharks won a game in round one was 2013, but they're favourites here and probably should be. Anthony Griffin is back with a new club and I think he's a proper coach. I'm hearing the Dragons are still getting around some of the structural changes he has made to how they play the game, but changes had to be made. I'm willing to tip them in the local derby - a number of Sharks forwards are nursing injuries and the Dragons have plenty of players (Bird, McCullough, Hunt, Merrin, ALvaro) with points to prove.
Verdict – Dragons by 4
Result – Sharks 32 defeated Dragons 18

@ToughBunny
I have updated your tips in the tipping comp for round one now.
I'm trying to work out if there were issues with the tipping comp closing early last night.
If anyone can confirm that they were on the site before the Storm/Rabbits game commenced, and couldn't see the link to the tipping form, please let me know.
It may be daylight savings related...or something else, but I'd like to know before next week if possible.

Hi Boss,
I was on the website, considering a change with the form still available, then refreshed the page, and the "show/hide tipping form' was gone.
That was just prior to my message to you @ 6.28pm , re the disappearance of the form .
Cheers,

Good result for the Storm last night. Couldn't watch the game as I was in bed with a nasty cold and not really interested in anything except getting better. It was probably the worlds best coach against the worlds best coach. My brother did watch the game and thought Latrelle is no longer a fullback option ( a bit slow) but should be in the centres where GI excelled. Any thoughts?

What a first half by the Broncos!!!!
Regardless of the final score tonight- every Bronco player turned up to play tonight - what a turn around!

That first half killed me, and I was looking for a brick to lob down at Lane. Second half was a bit better, No idea how we were that terrible to begin the game.

When it is all said and done the broncos just need to have a win i liked what i saw just a small rub of the green would not go astray.
Submitted by Esra Star on
Yep,,i saw plenty of good things last night mate. Even though we lost it could have gone either way.
Although i tipped the Eels i wanted the Broncos to win.
They will have a good season based on what i saw last night. Specially with the return of Staggs in a few weeks.
Submitted by The Butcher on
The Eels were so bad in the first half a good team would of put 30 on them.
All they had to do is score first in the second half and game over but once Parra scored you knew the Broncos would crumble. Milford was good while the Eels struggled but when they came back he went missing if not for Turpins defence it could of turned ugly.
They needed more than a fun of the green try an 80 minutes performance.

There were a few performances that I found annoying, Lane, Waqu, Matterson (to a limit), and that period in the second half with mindless kicks from both sides into no where with out communicating?????? Happy with the two points but we have such a mountain to climb before next week.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
Lane wasn't the only culprit last night Baggy. Others guilty of dropped ball, the Blake & Ferguson edge was like they were complete strangers & Sivo on the other caught in no mans land a couple of times. Once the Broncos lost a couple of players it was always going to be a tough ask but you'd expect a team to kick on at 16-0 up and in total control. The tale of two halves indeed.
Submitted by mark ashford on
Thought the Broncs showed a big improvement over last years efforts or was it lack of effort last year. Losing 3 top players would hurt any team but it does give me some hope for future games. Only managed to see the first half as I'm still a bit crook and went to bed. Well done to the Eels. I see from some comments above a bit of criticism directed to some Eels players. Fair dinkum fellas, it was only game one, give 'em a break.

Hey Steel
Nice win by your Warriors, not too many of us here saw that coming.
Well done to you and the others who tipped them.

Cant expect butcher to miss a chance to drop us in the mincer.
Submitted by Steel Panther on
Yes Mark. Can't say I was 100% confident but we have a good record v Titans so decided to lock them in with hope after such a great effort last season. Apparently the game was played in 30 degree heat so thought the Warriors would run out of gas but they did well.

Good Saturday evening to you Mark A - yes mate -agree, the two "cageiest" coaches in the biz. Rugby League can be proud for it, as others come along and look up to these two icons.
Mitchell was once a centre and very good at it. That of course will depend on A. Mundine who gets in his ear and what he impresses, or tries to upon him. My thought is centre, as he is a very hard running enforcer there.
As for this afternoon mate - I have no answer, apart from defence wins games and we were bloody atrocious. I will of course report to Butcher, but again early games yet and first wins are a must, if u r intent on a top four finish.
Keep well Bro - Big Pete in Bx.

we know it is only a matter of time for you to surface, are you waiting to see how penrith go first before you do ???
Submitted by BigPeteBx on
Evening Butch/Padbul/Newbie (yeah U 2 Boss) - peace brothers, I'm waving a white flag.
We were bloody atrocious!
I would have picked Roosters, especially for my tipping comps, but being disloyal in early games, is not a good sign of a loyal supporter, if I had jumped on the Chooks wagon. There will be times, if those displays keep up.
You guys were poetry in motion and the ball was like a hot spud....oops, should I say that.
Heavens knows the result if Vic Radley played, because he is a dynamo in action.
Well done and I'll leave it at that. Although....early games, all teams need runs on the board for a final 4 berth.
Keep well fellas - Big Pete in Bx.

Yes Steely - we got carved up like a Sunday Roast on Saturday.
Shocker from my lot!
I tend to think the Covid sanitising had an effect on their hands and they couldn't grasp player, or ball. The ball wasn't slippery - looked like a nice fine SCG track. Soooooooooo............I'm bloody lost for words mate, but we'll all go through it this season - sometime or another.
Of course, us who show our colours will know, but as for the quiet hidden ones - who knows.
Cheers mate and keep well - Big Pete in Bx.

Hey Rocket Ryan
Nice to see the Butcher has his knives out for the Broncs yet again.
Yes his Rorters gave Manly a stich up and did deserve the win.
I've called for this many times but would love a salary cap look at the Roosters. I've heard talk Uncle Nick has been seen cruising the Eastern suburbs with plenty of brown paper bags. I will never believe they are under the cap when you look at their roster.

With butcher mark we wait for the wheel to turn hope it is soon.

Good to hear from you Big Pete. After watching Manly yesterday all I can say is it might be a long season for your boys although it's only round one. I'm thinking you might get more joy from your Red Devils who are doing well but even in second they are a long way behind City. Good my Rangers finally climbed back to the top of the SPL and travelling well in Europe too.
Hope all is well sir. Take care!!

The good news from the EPL is that even with the wrong team winning the right city will win. Europe is the big test these days isn't it.

All this banter is meant in fun. I'm happy your Roosters started the season with a convincing win. As it's only one round down I'm not ready to suggest a top 8. Your Chooks face the Tigers next weekend who put up a good show against the Raiders in Canberra. All teams need a couple of weeks to settle into form, let's see what happens.

Evenin Steely - all is relatively well, apart from niggles.
I just hope with Manly, they can create some winning ways and make a better effort of it, rather than hanging around as cellar dwellers.
I also follow Glasgow Rangers and in time can see Steven Gerrard down in EPL, much like what happened with Kenny Dalglish (Celtic) all those many years ago.
Devils have West Ham in the morning and will be interesting how that goes with former manager against former club and the close contest in Round 5 of FA Cup.
Have a good week and keep well
Big Pete

Evening Baggy - nice to see you have a following in EPL as well. I wasn't aware that you entered into that code.
Yes mate - Europe is the big bucks of it all, as that also links into the Euro Championships and shows who might be the ones to look out for, with players coming back to play for their country and then World Cup.
Man City certainly stuck to their goals and shows why they lead EPL. But I enjoyed it more when United defeated City last round, mind you at City's home ground. A big lead to peg back, but teams for European Cup are starting to show, with even West Ham showing up and making the count - so far.
Eels looked much better second half, as I sat in the lounge wondering.
Takes all teams a few weeks to gel with players in real time matches. We wait to see how the season progresses.
Have a good week and keep well

Yep Pete, going back to when I played the round ball in school. My coach told us all to watch United as they were miles and miles and miles away the best team during the 90's and to watch them move the ball was magic. Been with them ever since and loved the journey, its a bit harder since the scores and reporting have fallen off and work/study/children have devoured more of my time but I still touch base. Best of luck this week, but the Bunnies didn't look the good but sadly neither did your boys, thank god for home field advantage, crank the heaters in the away teams change rooms, hide the switch and let them bake.
