Round nineteen selections

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – CommBank Stadium

Fifth plays sixth and the winner of this contest is in best shape to (potentially) replace the Storm in the top four. Ryan Matterson is expected to return at lock for the Eels, but he may be rested for one more week. Some big inclusions for the Broncos in Carrigan, Capewell and Oates and some big possible inclusions in Haas and Cobbo. It's worth waiting for the official team lists if you can. The Eels have lost just the one game at CommBank all season (to the Tigers by a point). Meanwhile the Broncos have only beaten one top eight team away from home this season (the Bunnies). The Broncos are clearly good enough, but their away record against good teams (and their opponents record at this ground) has me tipping the Eels.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result – Broncos 36 defeated Eels 14

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Netstrata Jubilee Stadium

The Dragons may not realise it just yet, but their season is over. Conceding 54 points to the Chooks (who aren't exactly firing) on the back of conceding 32 points to the Baby Broncos. Given their current form, I can't see them winning any of their next four games and by then any finals prospects are beyond them. Manly, on the other hand, have won five of their last six. Their only loss during that period was a narrow defeat to the Cowboys. The Cowboys are lengths better than the Dragons.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10

Result – Dragons 20 defeated Sea Eagles 6

Newcastle Knights vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

Luke Keary returns for the Chooks and I think almost everyone would hope that it goes well. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves returns also, which is timely given the injuries to Taukeiaho and Tupouniua. Hymel Hunt returns for the Knights, with Young dropping to the reserves list. The Knights have a fair run home this year but their recent performances have been below their best. Their coach has been taking out appliances so he's probably put some rockets up a few of his troops. That might lift them, but I'm still tipping the Roosters.

Verdict – Roosters by 4

Result – Roosters 42 defeated Knights 12

Canberra Raiders vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium

The Raiders have a fair run home into the finals and are very much still in finals contention. Jordan Rapana and James Schiller are out but Canberra welcome back Nic Cotric and Elliot Whitehead. For the Warriors, the major change is the shunting of Reece Walsh to the interchange - it will be interesting to see how he is utilised from there. Chanel Harris-Tavita takes over in the number one jersey and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is a welcome return on the wing.  The daytime slot should improve the quality of football for both teams but it's hard to tip the Warriors away from home and it's just as hard to tip against the Raiders in Canberra.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result – Raiders 26 defeated Warriors 14

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – BlueBet Stadium

As I have mentioned previously the Sharks have had some luck with their draw this season and they've won their last two games against Origin-depleted opponents. This will be a fairer measure of how they are travelling. The Panthers rested all their Origin stars last week and they still won. They're all back this weekend and they're playing at home - it's almost unfathomable that they could lose this.

Verdict – Panthers by 14

Result – Panthers 20 defeated Sharks 10

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Accor Stadium

Many of us have been waiting for the Melbourne Storm reset, where they suddenly bounce back and become the team they have been for at least a decade. It didn't happen last week, but they were better, and I imagine the season-ending injury to Ryan Papenhuyzen would have unsettled them a little. They haven't found the solution to their defensive woes yet but they are improving. I'll back them to improve a little more this weekend, and do enough to get the win.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Rabbitohs 24 defeated Storm 12

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – CommBank Stadium

14th plays 15th, and while this game won't mean much in the context of the broader season it will mean plenty for these two clubs. Winning this might be the difference between a wooden spoon and something slightly less awkward. The Dogs, to their credit, have been a much-improved side under their interim coach (who can clearly coach). Addo-Carr is hoping to return and while wingers don't usually matter a lot, Addo-Carr does - he's a finisher and the Bulldogs need players that can score points. The Titans were better against the Broncos too, but I'm with the Bulldogs at home.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result – Bulldogs 36 defeated Titans 26

North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Queensland Country Bank Stadium

Tigers talisman James Tamou joins rare group as he plays game number 300 on Sunday afternoon. There aren't a lot of people in the 300 club, but there are even fewer prop forwards (for the trivia buffs, the list is: Steve Price, Brent Kite, Petero Civoniceva*). It's terrific that he gets to play this game against a club he won a premiership with. Coach Brett Kimmorley (Covid) won't be there to help him celebrate, which leaves the team currently running last on a road trip under a couple of assistant coaches against one of the in-form teams in the NRL. Potentially ugly.

*I'm not including players that played much of their career in other positions (Wiki, Blair)

Verdict – Cowboys by 22

Result – Cowboys 27 defeated Tigers 26

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 18. No perfects scores this time around with the Raiders (again) beating the Storm in Melbourne tripping most of us up. The average score across all tipsters was around 6/8 so if you did better than that give yourself a pat on the back.

If you notice anything with the scores that needs attention just let me know.

I will have my previews and selections published by Wednesday. Apologies to anyone that I convinced into tipping the Tigers to beat the Panthers. Close...but no.

Bugger!!
I forget to put my tips in last Friday, didn't notice 'till after the first game. I was pretty upset with myself for a while as it was our 55th wedding anniversary also that day. I thought about the many good things in my life & realized that the footy tipping was not the most important thing after-all. We were married 4 weeks after I had returned from a pretty rugged 12 months in Vietnam in June 1967.
I will continue with my tipping & my aim (hopefully) is to remain 12 games behind the leader.
All the best for the rest of the season to all, & regards, too.

Hi David.C-Manly1st

I can't see your tips in the list of our submissions for round 18, and I can't see any comments from you on the round 18 page or any other page where you might have added them in the comments.

Is it possible you weren't signed in when you visited the page?

You need to be signed in (and tagged as a tipster) to see the link to the tipping forms.

I have submitted my tips early this week, I usually tip right after the weekend of footy with a 'subject to change' attached to them. The tips I have submitted are those initial instinct tips and are subject to change as we get closer to kick off :P

Good evening Boss, I'm going to be stuck over on Fraser for the start of round 20 (Oh the humanity of it :)) so I would like, if I may, to put my tips in early. Round 20 tips

Eels
Raiders
Sharks
Broncos
Bulldogs
Dragons.

Thanks Baggy Gee

Have a great trip. I will add your round 20 tips for you.

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

Other than my laptop playing funny buggers tonight (45 mins to power up and update etc) not much to say. Oh, maybe just that I’ll be getting an ultrasound of my leg on Friday to see how bad my veins are and then another sit-down with the specialist Monday. The joys of growing older. Pffft 🤪 OK, let’s do this thing …

Eels vs. Broncos @ CommBank
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Eels

Eels
"We felt like we needed to target a number around our metres tonight, which you need to control possession and it gives you field position for our halves to play off the back of. The scoreline probably didn't reflect our dominance and our control, but we have to learn from it. I was really happy for 75 minutes, I didn't want it to finish the way it did. Just because we make changes things can't change in our systems and there was certainly some concentration lapses," coach Brad Arthur said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 80% (33/41)
Post Contact Metres - 672
Tackle Breaks - 19
Missed Tackles - 17
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 7

Broncos
"We don't speak about finals footy, we just speak about each week and just trying to get better as a group. We haven't spoken about it. The goal of ours, in the atmosphere at the Broncos, is to win premierships and that is what we are about as a club. When that happens, I don't know but we are heading in the right direction for all of that to take place," coach Kevin Walters said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 86% (32/37)
Post Contact Metres - 478
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 57
Errors - 6
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: The Eels had a good win last week but can’t read too much into that as they only beat the Warriors and they let in 2 late tries. The Broncos were missing some Origin stars but still managed to scrape in over a full strength and fresh Titans. My head is telling me to go for the consistently inconsistent Eels but my gut is telling me to go the steady Broncos. I think I’ll go the Broncos by 6.

Dragons vs. Manly @ Kogarah
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Manly
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Dragons
"It's an enormous effort from him [Ben Hunt] to play. The same with Tedesco today. That's why they're Origin players. They both backed up and go hard at the game for 80 minutes. I can't wrap Ben enough. He's one of the best players in the game and one of the toughest players in the game, we just needed to play better for him today," coach Anthony Griffin said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 81% (26/32)
Post Contact Metres - 341
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 47
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 3

Manly
"The second half we were able to consolidate a little bit and go away in the end, but I don’t think the scoreboard really reflects the type of game it was. Particularly that first half which was pretty well end to end," coach Des Hasler said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 88% (37/42)
Post Contact Metres - 550
Tackle Breaks - 40
Missed Tackles - 27
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: The Dragons were pretty average in the second half last week against the Roosters and were simply blown away. Things don’t get any easier this week against Manly who are starting to hit their straps in impressive fashion. If DCE continues in the form he’s in, the Dragons are looking at another loss here and they would have to do a complete 180 to get up this week. Manly by 12.

Knights vs. Roosters @ McDonald Jones
Probability @ 30-70
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Knights
"That’s a weird game for us to dissect… so much there to build on, so much more than last week. But then there will be some disappointing stuff to look at as well. We lost three key players and had a man in the bin, we had a fair bit to contend with, so there is a bit of an out there as well," coach Adam O'Brien said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 79% (27/34)
Post Contact Metres - 396
Tackle Breaks - 27
Missed Tackles - 40
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 5

Roosters
"For the most part we were really dominant. I really liked the freedom that we played with. It's been a while since we scored 50 points and opened up like that. We had lots of options, guys playing long periods with the injuries and ending up with no one on the bench. Guys just spending time on the field was good. It looks like we've lost two guys [Smith and Tupouniua] to quite serious knee injuries and you feel for them but we've got a game next week and you have to move on but you feel sorry for your mate so we'll support them on the road to recovery. You have to suck it up pretty quickly and move on to next week," coach Trent Robinson said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 76% (30/39)
Post Contact Metres - 440
Tackle Breaks - 47
Missed Tackles - 33
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 1

Verdict: The Knights are struggling to put a full 80 minutes together these days and it showed last week against Manly. The Roosters found some form last week and smashed the Dragons in a second half blitz. Not sure they can repeat the effort but playing an out-of-sorts Knights gives them a chance. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Knights put in an improved showing and even though the Roosters have a few missing (again) they should be able to win this. Roosters by 12. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Raiders vs. Warriors @ GIO
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Raiders
Bookies Favourite = Raiders

Raiders
"That was a really great game of football and either team could have won. It was a tough game, physically tough. We’re in the hunt. There’s no doubt about that. I just need us to play with that type of spirit and that’s why I love coaching them because they’re a tough bunch of blokes and they’re spirited. It was a great performance by James (Schiller), he’s a young bloke and that try he scored in the second-half, the grubber kick, that was a very good try. Whether it was try of the year or not, I’m not too sure, but it was very handy for us," coach Ricky Stuart said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 78% (30/38)
Post Contact Metres - 506
Tackle Breaks - 32
Missed Tackles - 43
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 8

Warriors
"We came in at halftime feeling pretty good about ourselves but we knew that we had to be patient with the footy and unfortunately at crucial times when we got down their end we came up with some crucial errors. Against a team like that they will hurt you and they did tonight. We had some players who had a real good dig tonight, we just probably didn't play smart enough to build pressure. I think the big thing for us is when things don't go your way dealing with it. For the rest of the year we just need to find a bit of steel and effort in those areas," coach Stacey Jones said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 76% (32/42)
Post Contact Metres - 670
Tackle Breaks - 17
Missed Tackles - 19
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 3

Verdict: The Raiders were very impressive last week when they beat the Storm. Repeat that performance and they’re shoe-ins this week. The improvement they’ve shown in the last month and a half is remarkable. The Warriors came back down to earth last week against the Eels and scored a couple of late tries when it was all over. They were competitive for the most part but given the form the Raiders are currently in, I just can’t make a case for the Warriors. Raiders by 12.

Panthers vs. Sharks @ Panthers Stadium
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Panthers
"I was actually pretty happy with it. There were clearly a lot of mistakes at the wrong time but I definitely thought we were the better team in the first half. The score probably didn't reflect our dominance. The second half we came up with errors in good field position where I thought we were going to do something. We could've easily lost the game especially with young guys. It was probably quite fitting our captain scored the winning try," coach Ivan Cleary said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 74% (29/39)
Post Contact Metres - 682
Tackle Breaks - 47
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 6

Sharks
"We had to do large periods of goal line defence - and I was happy with that. I thought physically they were a little bit more committed than us and put the pressure on us physically - I was was not happy with that part of the game. But we just kept turning up and finding a way in goal line 'D'. I was really happy with the eight minutes after halftime when Blayke was in the bin. They had scored prior to that and there was potential to get rattled. I was really pleased with that because if that goes pear shaped it sets up the trend for the rest of the half," coach Craig Fitzgibbon said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 75% (31/41)
Post Contact Metres - 546
Tackle Breaks - 45
Missed Tackles - 45
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: Even though the probability ratings (70-30) and the bookies prices ($4 Sharks) suggest an easy win for the Panthers, I think the Sharks aren’t getting the respect they deserve in this game. The Panthers will get their Origin stars back this week and they should win but it may not be as easy as some think as the Sharks have been playing some very good footy lately. They’ve knocked off the Storm and the Cowboys in successive weeks but this one will more than likely test them. Panthers by 8.

Rabbitohs vs. Storm @ Stadium Aust
Probability @ 45-55
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Rabbitohs
“I thought for us to game back from behind several times in the game showed where this team is going and we’ve got some pretty important players come back into the team next week which will raise the bar again. With no Cameron and Cook we needed Latrell and Cody to stand up and when we were behind Latrell was the bloke who was pushing through that middle third and that’s what you want from your leaders.” - Rabbitohs coach Jason DemetriouSome stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 76% (29/38)
Post Contact Metres - 585
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 32
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 4

Storm
"I’m obviously really disappointed that we lost. I thought that we created a lot of opportunities so that was a huge improvement on the last couple of weeks, but we just couldn’t finish a few of them off. To get beat by four is really disappointing when you see in the context of the game how many chances we had. Hopefully we can keep some combinations together and keep working on our preparation and things will turn," coach Craig Bellamy said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 80% (37/46)
Post Contact Metres - 510
Tackle Breaks - 43
Missed Tackles - 32
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 8

Verdict: The way I see this is possibly too simple. Since Latrell Mitchell’s return the Bunnies have beaten the Knights and the Bulldogs. In the same two weeks, the Storm (in a mini form slump and with some injuries) have lost to classier sides in the Sharks and the Raiders. OK, now the Storm have now lost Papenhuyzen but I still think they have a class edge and Bellamy would have made adjustments to compensate. Storm by 6.

Bulldogs vs. Titans @ CommBank
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Bulldogs
Bookies Favourite = Bulldogs

Bulldogs
“I knew the threat that Souths brought and they did exactly what we thought they’d do. They executed really well and we just couldn’t slow them down and couldn’t stop them. I thought our boys played some good footy to counter and scored five tries but the problem is they scored seven and that’s too many. We did improve our defence a little bit in patches but again the game is 80 minutes and we’ve got to be more resilient,” coach Mick Potter said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 77% (27/35)
Post Contact Metres - 489
Tackle Breaks - 32
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 5

Titans
"We came as close as you can get without winning a game of footy, that's for sure. We just lack a bit of confidence, we have come so close so many times. We have just got to stick at it now, there is still plenty of games. There was a lot to like about the players and the performance - just not the scoreboard," coach Justin Holbrook said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 80% (32/40)
Post Contact Metres - 506
Tackle Breaks - 57
Missed Tackles - 34
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 1

Verdict: It’s not often you see the Bulldogs start favourite in a game but they deserve to be favourites this week. They have improved significantly whereas the Titans are simply not delivering and are sitting last for a reason. The Bulldogs put in a bold showing last week against the Bunnies and should (in theory) get up over a Titans side who had their chances (but fell short) against an undermanned Broncos last week. Bulldogs by 6.

Cowboys vs. Tigers @ Townsville
Probability @ 80-20
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Cowboys
"The difference tonight was that they defended their line better than we did. We just gave up four soft tries that should have been stopped. Take the adjudicating out of it, our 'D' isn't where it should be against a good team," coach Todd Payten said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 73% (30/41)
Post Contact Metres - 643
Tackle Breaks - 45
Missed Tackles - 45
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded – 7

Tigers
"I thought the first half we were a bit off in understanding what we were trying to achieve. The second half I thought we understood how to play football and get into a process and get some second phase football and restrict how many metres their back five were making. We were disallowed two tries because of our discipline and that probably proved the difference in the end," interim coach Brett Kimmorley said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 85% (35/41)
Post Contact Metres - 637
Tackle Breaks - 34
Missed Tackles - 47
Errors - 6
Penalties Conceded - 7

Verdict: The Cowboys lost last week but you gotta remember it was against a very sharp Sharks outfit who have hit some impressive form. Playing the Tigers at home should be a whole lot easier. The Tigers almost got up last week against the Panthers but again, you gotta remember the Panthers had their Origin stars missing. I just can’t see the Tigers threatening the Cowboys in this one. The Cowboys will bounce back this week and they’ll do it fairly easy I would imagine. Cowboys by 18.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

Just sat through Brad Arthur's press conference never once did they concede they're out played by a better team talks cheap in this business next week's game again Panthers looks like a big mountain to climb, for me the Parramatta Eels will tumble out of the 8

Rocket Ryan's picture

I thought the Titans were a lot better last week at some stage I thought they could win the inclusion of Campbell this week will keep the Bulldogs honest with a bit of luck and David Fifita playing even close to what he's capable of I think the Titans get the chocolates.

I noticed you're certainly taking a swing with your tips this week Rocket & you've landed one of them already. Para so hot & cold. You never know what team is going to turn up.

Have just witnessed the most disgraceful piece of incompetence in many many years of watching footy. Feel sorry for all Tigers fans, players and supporters after that rubbish that was just dished out to them in the final minute of their game. Never in the history of rugby league has something so trivial been allowed to decide the result of a game. Ref, back to the juniors for you, and whoever bunker boy was, new job for you old mate. Not in any capacity in rugby league though, the game doesn't deserve an imbecile like you.

Anonymous's picture

What I witnessed tonight was one of the worst refereeing decisions in my 40 years watching the game of rugby league. The NRL should hang its head in shame. To rob a team like that of a thoroughly deserved victory against all odds is a crime. Really feel for the Tigers....

Steel Panther's picture

I'll put my name to that last comment & couldn't agree more with Gummy. The officials tonight should never be let near the game again. EVER!!

David's picture

I totally agree that was terrible, there are so many things wrong with the footy this year and maybe last few years for sure. Another home team bad decision nothing had changed with the Nrl. Please get rid of 6 again rule, get rid of Captains challenge and finally piss the Video Ref off. So many wrong decisions as usual

NuL1F3's picture

I really hate to say it but Tigers were robbed. They should hold their heads high in the knowledge they were the better team tonight.

Mary S's picture

Have to agree with you NuL1F3. I love to see the Cowboys win, but not like that.
Felt sorry for Tigers and Tamou's milestone game.

Cheers,

Hi All
Watched that Tigers/Cowboys game yesterday and must agree with the above comments, thought it was an even contest for most of the game but the Tigers came home strongly and deserved the win. The after the final whistle penalty was the cruelest thing I've seen.

Yes that was so f up that penalty as they say the top teams get all the terrible call

Evening All
Sorry for my absenteeism of late, as a true footy fan I wear my heart on my sleeve.

I took the loss in the origin decider hard and then yesterday afternoon just topped it off.

I did not want to get on this site and rant and rave and whinge and seek out sympathy votes.

Sometimes it is best to abstain and take the morally correct high ground and come out the other side with one's integrity intact.

I honestly don't have any funny comments or one bit of sarcasm to throw around, that's what being involved in this site is about, showing who one is, what they are made of and what they stand for and how they hurt.

Enjoy your week folks.

Hey Tiger,
Your integrity speaks volumes from your above post, I feel for you man as do many others here. Some would say it's just another game but that was a blight on referees which is a great shame.
