St George Illawarra Dragons vs Cronulla Sharks – Thursday night – WIN Stadium, Wollongong
One of those proper local derbies, but I doubt the PM will be there with his magic fingers to help the Sharkies over the line. Even without the mystical forces of Scomo willing them on, I'm happy to pick the Sharks in this. The Moylan/Hynes combo in the halves hasn't quite clicked yet, but at some point Moylan should work out what he's meant to be doing out there. Their forwards are a nice blend of hard-working trenchermen and brutal blocks of angry granite. The Sharks beat the Dragons twice in 2021, and while the Dragons are on the improve, you could argue that the Sharks are too. Also, there's that whole Burgess situation to unsettle the Red V just two days before the game.
Verdict – Sharks by 2
Result – Sharks 36 defeated Dragons 12
Wests Tigers vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – Campbelltown Sports Stadium
When I heard that the Murdoch papers had some big scoop on some awful behaviour from the Wests Tigers on the eve of their game against the Knights last weekend, I feared the worst. In reality, two of their players walked three minutes from their hotel to play the pokies and not drink anything until 10 o'clock at night. Then they walked for three minutes back to their hotel, and had just enough time to get some rest before they played football some seventeen hours later. Scandalous!!! I'm not much of a pokies fan myself, but given that most of the NRL clubs would go broke without them it seems silly to criticise their behaviour. Needless to say the Tigers were poor against the Knights, hence the pokies criticism I guess. There's also talk that Luke Brooks isn't happy, and there may be some truth in that given he asked for a release from the club in the off season. James Tamou and Jacob Liddle return while Jackson Hastings is suspended until round six. For the Warriors, Kodi Nikorima replaces Ash Taylor in the halves. I don't mind that change. In a game where points could be freely scored (weather permitting), I'll back the Warriors attack to score a few more.
Verdict – Warriors by 4
Result – Warriors 16 defeated Tigers 12
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – Accor Stadium
It's still, I think, the biggest and most important rivalry in the game. This will be the first time these sides meet since Latrell Mitchell caught Joey Manu high and changed the shape of his skull. Both players line up on Friday night, and it's all just another chapter for 'The Book of Feuds'. The Bunnies are yet to win a game this season but you just know they'll be up for it. It's also their first home game (and first game in Sydney) which can't hurt. They created enough chances against the Storm to win comfortably but couldn't quite find the player or the line when they needed to. I expect they'll improve, and Walker and Mitchell will keep getting fitter each week. For the Chooks, there was marked improvement from round 1 to round 2, particularly from their spine. They also had an opportunity to play some wet weather football last week, and there's a fair chance they'll be working in similar conditions here. I'd be surprised if this game doesn't go down to the wire. Roosters...just
Verdict – Roosters by 2
Result – Rabbitohs 28 defeated Roosters 16
Penrith Panthers vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Carrington Park, Bathurst
First plays second in a contest between two sides who are yet to taste defeat in 2022. To be fair, the Panthers have barely tasted defeat in years. They're also winning without Nathan Cleary, so it's hard not to be impressed. He's edging closer to a return, but it won't be this week. Note that the Panthers have lost Brian To'o for quite some time, and there has to be considerable doubt over Fisher-Harris playing (although he has been named to start). With Leota also unavailable for a couple of months, the Panthers are going to start missing these players that give them so much field position through brute force. The Knights often start the year well. They won last week without Ponga at fullback, and even though their opponents were poor I was impressed with what I saw. They're probably rank outsiders, but I think they can pull this off.
Verdict – Knights by 4
Result – Panthers 38 defeated Knights 20
Melbourne Storm vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – AAMI Park
I was leaning ever so slightly to the Storm in this, if only because of their relentless consistency and winning strike rate, particularly at home. But the withdrawal of Harry Grant (COVID protocols) has sent me over the edge. So here I am, tipping against the Storm in Melbourne. It's the tipping equivalent of pushing a medicine ball up a sand dune with a pair of chopsticks but look at me, tipping like a goose. The last 20 minutes of the round two game between the Storm and the Rabbitohs was some of the maddest sport I've ever seen. The Storm found a way to win, as they tend to do, but without Grant, Brandon Smith and Christian Welch I think they're vulnerable. Look at me, calling the Storm vulnerable. When will I learn?
Verdict – Eels by 1
Result – Eels 28 defeated Storm 24
Canberra Raiders vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday night – GIO Stadium
The Raiders were sub-par against the Cowboys, but they did have to strap a bunch of cats together to name a backline for that game. This weekend they welcome back Cotric, Rapana and Schneider, so they should be a lot less cat-like. They need to be though, because the Titans look like a team on the ascendancy. I still think they'll be playing finals football this year.
Verdict – Titans by 8
Result – Raiders 24 defeated Titans 22
Brisbane Broncos vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium
Since an epic grand final back in 2015, these two clubs had been on a steady decline, and for the last two seasons they've been battling each other to avoid the wooden spoon. It's been an ugly couple of years. Finally, there are some green shoots emerging for both clubs, and in both cases it's taken the recruitment of an experienced halfback to turn things around. Chad Townsend (Cowboys) and Adam Reynolds (Broncos) are both well-paid for what they do, but they understood why they are there and they are delivering. Both bring experience and intelligence to clubs that really needed it. Perhaps even more importantly, they're both good people, and the youngsters at both clubs will be better people for working alongside them. These clubs leaked more than 1400 points combined last season and this year their defence has been miserly - so they've come a long way. As a guide to this contest, both sides have played the Bulldogs already this year, with the Cowboys losing by 2 points in Townsville while the Broncos won by 6 in Sydney. That would suggest the Broncos have a slight edge, but the round two Cowboys were much better than they were in round one. In a rare Sunday afternoon timeslot for the Broncos at home I'd be surprised if we don't have a crowd of 40000+ for this game. There will be plenty of support for the Cowboys at the ground, but the weight of support will be behind the Broncos. It will help, and I'll back the Reynolds kicking game to get the Broncos home in his first game for the club at Lang Park. There's a bunch of games you should be watching in round three, and this is definitely one of them
Verdict – Broncos by 7
Result – Cowboys 38 defeated Broncos 12
Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Sunday afternoon – 4 Pines Park
Manly coach Des Hasler isn't panicking. He's named the same seventeen as last week, and Des would know better than you or I if he needs to make changes. Last year the Sea Eagles lost their first four games of the year, then they went on a bit of a tear and looked like world-beaters, so they've been through this before. Importantly, their first two games of the season were away from home and against premiership heavyweights, so this should be a little easier. They've also had two more days than the Bulldogs to prepare for this game. At some point they're likely to fire up the after-burners and show us all they are still a force in this competition. A Sunday afternoon at Brookie seems the right setting for such a show.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8
Result – Sea Eagles 13 defeated Bulldogs 12

Greetings tipsters
I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round two.
A special shout out to Teraflare - who picked up our first perfect round for the season. Most of us only got 5 or 6 from 8, and from memory only three tipsters got 7...so an impressive effort.
If anyone notices any scoring that needs attention just let me know.
I will have my previews and selections published tomorrow, and Wally will have his tips published on Wednesday night.

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,
Getting in early this week as I’m currently on a week’s leave 💪. No, I’m not in ISO, just chillin’ before we start working on the new ERP (computer) system at work. Been through a few of them in my time and they’re always a headache and a very stressful learning curve for all. Hence the R&R this week.
Now, unless I start to pull my finger out, I see another tipping season down the gurgler 🤪. Yeah it’s early days I know but still, 7 after 2 rounds ain’t good. Round 3 has a number of games I reckon could go either way (STG & Sharkies / Tigers & Warriors / Rabbitohs & Roosters / Broncos & Cowboys) so I’ll be stoked if I can get 5 or 6 correct.
OK, let’s do this thing …
Dragons vs. Sharks @ WIN
Probability @ 45-55
Ladder Position = Dragons
Bookies Favourite = Sharks
Dragons
The Dragons followed up their Round 1 form with another great effort last week. They kept the Panthers scoreless in the second half and forced them make 80 more tackles than the Dragons made (306-386). They lacked a bit of polish at times and just a bit down on fitness but a good effort nevertheless. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 65% (27/41)
Post Contact Metres - 574
Tackle Breaks - 25
Missed Tackles - 32
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 6
Sharks
The Sharks celebrated their return to Shark Park after 2 years with an exciting 18-16 win over the Eels last week. They were guilty of some poor discipline at times (and some poor kicking from Hynes) but dug deep and showed determination in that win. They look the real deal, much to my surprise I must admit. As coach Fitzgibbon said … "We did it the hard way." Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 75% (28/37)
Post Contact Metres - 621
Tackle Breaks - 49
Missed Tackles - 37
Errors - 11
Penalties Conceded - 8
Verdict: Geez, this is a hard one. Both did well against quality teams last week. Even though they lacked a bit of polish I might just go the Dragons at home.
Tigers vs. Warriors @ Campbelltown
Probability @ 50-50
Ladder Position = Warriors
Bookies Favourite = Warriors
Tigers
I’m afraid I gave the Tigers too much credit last week. Their 26-4 loss to the Knights was pretty submissive to be honest. They just didn’t come to play and showed basically nothing. Their plays were unimaginative, their completion was terrible and to top it off they had no luck whatsoever. It was just one of those days they need to learn from. Where to from here? Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 40%
Completion Rate - 61% (24/39)
Post Contact Metres - 392
Tackle Breaks - 20
Missed Tackles - 36
Errors - 18
Penalties Conceded - 6
Warriors
The Warriors scored a couple of late tries in the first half to go into the sheds 18-16 up but a scoreless second 40 may have cost them any chance of winning last week against the Titans. Well that and some crucial errors when genuine scoring opportunities presented themselves. "We're way past trying to develop players, we want to win bloody games of footy and that's just not acceptable," Warriors coach Brown said. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 52%
Completion Rate - 76% (32/42)
Post Contact Metres - 527
Tackle Breaks - 29
Missed Tackles - 36
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7
Verdict: After last week I have no faith in the Tigers (yet). I think the Warriors are due to “switch on” and I’m tipping them to get up.
Rabbitohs vs. Roosters @ Stadium Aust
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Roosters
Bookies Favourite = Roosters
Rabbitohs
The Bunnies looked gone for all money (14-0 down with 13 minutes to go) but they really came to life in the last 15-20 minutes and nearly pinched it. It was a much better effort last week and they most probably should’ve won that considering they beat the Storm in a lot of key areas stats-wise. If only Latrell hadn’t missed those 3 conversions 😰. There were some encouraging signs with their effort. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 61% (29/47)
Post Contact Metres - 700
Tackle Breaks - 39
Missed Tackles - 24
Errors - 19
Penalties Conceded - 4
Roosters
The Roosters won that game against Manly last week in the first half when they led 22-0 at the break. They were relentless in attack in the first 40 and in a vastly improved defensive effort from Round 1, they saw off a fight-back from Manly in the second half and ended up winning 26-12. Walker and Keary worked well together and Taukeiaho had a burster. Tupouniua was heading for a possible MoM (in my humble opinion) until he got forced off with a HIA. Not perfect but what I saw was encouraging. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 73% (33/45)
Post Contact Metres - 556
Tackle Breaks - 35
Missed Tackles - 33
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 7
Verdict: I can’t believe the Bunnies are at $2.45 for this. They were pretty darn good in that second half last week. Without ANY confidence at all, I’ll go the Roosters. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔
Panthers vs. Knights @ Bathurst
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Panthers
Panthers
Another good effort from the Panthers last week saw them come away with a 20-16 victory over the Dragons. Even though they were kept scoreless in the second half the Panthers went about their job in a professional and clinical manner and did what good teams do, albeit they had to make a truckload of tackles (386). Great contributions from Viliame Kikau, Jarome Luai and Isaah Yeo. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 68% (26/38)
Post Contact Metres - 513
Tackle Breaks - 32
Missed Tackles - 25
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 7
Knights
The Knights made a glorious return to McDonald Jones last week with a comprehensive 26-4 victory over the Tigers. They were switched on from the start and had 12 points on the board inside the first 9 minutes. The Knights forward pack simply dominated the Tigers and the Knights’ defence never gave their opposition a look in. It was a really focussed effort from the Knights. If there was a question mark on their performance it would be whether or not the Knights were good or did the lack of opposition make them look good? I’ve got a feeling they were the former. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 60%
Completion Rate - 88% (39/44)
Post Contact Metres - 590
Tackle Breaks - 36
Missed Tackles - 20
Errors - 7
Penalties Conceded - 8
Verdict: I think the Knights sitting on top of the ladder might change this week. Smarter heads than mine have them at $4.00 to win this and I think they might be right. Nah, until something breaks, I’m on the Panthers.
Storm vs. Eels @ AAMI
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm
Storm
Another impressive effort (albeit a lucky one with the FG in extra time) from the Storm last week saw them come away with a 15-14 nail-biter over the Rabbitohs. Went about their job in a professional and clinical manner (the first half anyway) and did what good teams do. Great contributions from Cameron Munster, Harry Grant and Felise Kaufusi. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 69% (29/42)
Post Contact Metres - 598
Tackle Breaks - 24
Missed Tackles - 39
Errors - 18
Penalties Conceded - 10
Eels
With just a minute to go, the Eels lost a thriller 18-16 last week against the Sharks. The opportunity was there to hold on but they failed to do so, which I thought was just a little uncharacteristic. I think their game needed to be a bit more physical against the Sharks. The Eels are a quality side and they just need to iron out a few bugs and they’ll come good. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 87% (34/39)
Post Contact Metres - 633
Tackle Breaks - 37
Missed Tackles - 49
Errors - 6
Penalties Conceded - 8
Verdict: I think the formlines from last week read better for the Storm and they’re home. Yeah, Storm to get up here.
Raiders vs. Titans @ GIO
Probability @ 55-45
Ladder Position = Titans
Bookies Favourite = Raiders
Raiders
The Raiders were right in the mix up to half-time last week against the Cowboys. They looked a little more dangerous than the Cowboys at the start of the second half but when the Cowboys scored at the 55 minute mark it was the start of the end for the Green Machine and they were well beaten 26-6. Not quite sure what went wrong but it did. Maybe it was their error count or lack of possession, but either way they struggled to compete. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 44%
Completion Rate - 56% (18/32)
Post Contact Metres - 360
Tackle Breaks - 31
Missed Tackles - 19
Errors - 15
Penalties Conceded - 8
Titans
The Titans didn’t win as easily as I thought they would but that may have been due to the heat and the effort put forward by their opposition. They still managed to get themselves a skinny 20-18 victory against the Warriors last week however. After some good second half defence the Titans hung in there and toughed out the win (a good win given the circumstances). Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 48%
Completion Rate - 75% (33/44)
Post Contact Metres - 542
Tackle Breaks - 36
Missed Tackles - 29
Errors - 14
Penalties Conceded - 2
Verdict: The Raiders were pretty ordinary last week whereas the Titans just snuck in against the Warriors. Having said that though, I give the Titans a fair ol’ chance of pinching this. I know I shouldn’t but I’m tipping the Titans.
Broncos vs. Cowboys @ Suncorp
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Broncos
Broncos
Just like the Bulldogs, the Broncos defended with determination last week. Again, they showed something that’s been missing in recent times. A number of attacking sets from the Bulldogs in the second half were turned away by the Broncos time after time and Kelly’s in-field take off the boot of JAC was a beauty. Every time the Doggies edged ahead, the Broncos responded. A couple of contentious tries from Herbie Farnworth off of some (alleged) lazy Bulldogs defence eventually got them home 16-10. All round, a good showing from the Broncos, even though they only had 41% possession 😱. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 41%
Completion Rate - 75% (28/37)
Post Contact Metres - 421
Tackle Breaks - 31
Missed Tackles - 37
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 6
Cowboys
The Cowboys bounced back from their disappointing Round 1 form and with the help of 3 unanswered tries in the second half they brushed aside the Raiders 26-6 last week. Not much in it up to half-time but after absorbing the early second half pressure from the Raiders they scored in the 55th minute and their confidence grew and they simply out-gunned the Raiders. A surprising yet well deserved victory. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 56%
Completion Rate - 76% (30/39)
Post Contact Metres - 560
Tackle Breaks - 19
Missed Tackles - 31
Errors - 9
Penalties Conceded - 6
Verdict: Very, very impressed with what the Cowboys did last week but at Suncorp I’m tipping the Broncos.
Manly vs. Bulldogs @ Brookvale
Probability @ 70-30
Ladder Position = Bulldogs
Bookies Favourite = Manly
Manly
Manly basically lost that match last week against the Roosters when they went into the sheds at half-time 22-0 behind. Nice fight-back in the second half but it was too little too late and they finally succumbed 26-12. For the second week in a row the opposition managed to stifle Turbo’s game (is he carrying a little niggle I wonder) and that hurt Manly. Don’t worry, they’ll figure something out I’m sure. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 81% (30/37)
Post Contact Metres - 502
Tackle Breaks - 33
Missed Tackles - 35
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 5
Bulldogs
The Bulldogs put in a good effort last week against the Broncos but still went down 16-10. The Bulldogs defended with improved attitude and execution, something that’s good to see. It was 4-4 at half-time and they poked their noses in front in the second but the Broncos were responding tit-for-tat with the points. Two instances of questionable (lazy) defensive efforts led to tries for the Broncos and that may have been the difference between the Doggies winning and losing. Even though they lost last week, the Bulldogs showed us their defence has come along and they should be pleased. Pretty impressed with the workload from Corey Waddell. He had a good one. Some stats possibly worth a mention:
Possession - 59%
Completion Rate - 75% (30/40)
Post Contact Metres - 533
Tackle Breaks - 37
Missed Tackles - 31
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 3
Verdict: I’m liking what the Bulldogs are doing so far but surely Manly must bounce back eh? They have the players so I’m counting on them to get the chockies this week. Manly to finally get on the board.
Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”. I’m sure a lot of you ol’ timers will enjoy this one, if not for the dancing 😁.

Good Friday arvo to you Mark A.
Mate - Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly along with Judy Garland certainly had the genes for dancing and many a person on this site would know of them, or their parents sure did.
We have the NRL visitors to town for tomorrows annual match. As I live only two walking blocks to the ground and two pubs on corners, one keeps a very close eye on car parking, because it fills up in our street from early morning hours.
Have a good weekend and keep well.

Hey Big Pete
Yes my parents were hooked on those old movies, probably explains my interest even today. As a youngster growing up in suburban Brisbane, when my Mom could afford it, I would go to the local theatre on a Saturday morning where we would get a travelogue followed by a Three Stooges short and then usually a western. I absolutely fell in love with the Stooges even to the point I occasionally watch them on u-tube. Not quite as funny today as it was back then. Too violent for some now.

Any Sharkies fans out there.
You should be proud of your club after their effort last night. Completely shut the Dragons out, sorry for the Dragons fans but someone had to win in a dominate match. Nikko Hynes was in everything and seeing he had played in the Qld Cup and then Storm I was hoping he was a Qlder but alas he's a blue and maybe deserves a jersey in this years SOO....great player.

Yep Some go with you some against but it slows the game down and what really gives me the shizzers is when the try has been awarded, the other team are back in their half waiting for the kick off and then they decide to "go up stairs". and look at it! Grrrr!

Im with esra somebody should blow the buncker up.
Preferably with no refs inside it.
Submitted by NuL1F3 on
I wouldn't want to play footy at that level for quids! Absolute crap that awarded tries can go to the bunker so long after the fact, then they slow the footage down so much and what do you know? The play wasn't 100% perfect, which, without the super slow mo you would never have known.
I wonder how many slightly less than perfect celebrated plays the greats of this sport had that we would have lost had this eras bunker been there? I wonder how long until the players stop playing so hard because of overuse of the bunker? It has to be at least a little soul crushing.
I'm really hating some of the late tackle calls too, where is the tackling player supposed to go if the ball is offloaded mere moments before the tackle? In real time it looks ok but you slow it down and it seems like an eternity...

They are trying to make it like American football. But the two are completely different structured games.

The NRL should trial a weekend of fixtures without the bunker. See how that goes.

The bunker works for me so long as they get it right but they don't always. Wests robbed of a try last night that wasn't even referred upstairs. Ref backed himself but if it's an act of scoring surely you go upstairs? Isn't that primarily what the bunker is for, to eliminate any doubt, but I can only assume in the ref's mind there was no doubt.

Mark,
Any footy purist who watched the game would surely agree with my comments. Even Under 6s aren't as bad as what was on display last night. Who the teams were makes no difference, what I'm referring to is the standard which was way short of what's expected at NRL level.
In the last 20 minutes, with the game there for the taking for both teams, I don't think either team completed a set. Tigers did get across the chalk only for the boy to drop the ball under minimal pressure.
It was a game where, in my opinion, the best team lost....
Tigerholic did you see it??

I can think of a few refs that I would put inside before detonation.

Hey Steely,
I wasn't being critical just say a win is a win. If you look at my Broncos performance last year they were diabolical even to the point I was ready to walk away from the NRL. Grossly overpaid players, not just in the Broncs but in other clubs as well. We now have several players across the clubs getting a million or close to it. There is something wrong with the salary system. I think a base rate and then a generous bonus payment based on performance would sort the would be's from the genuine players. Just a thought.

Hey Mark,
I know you weren't being critical. I just thought the quality of football was absymal. I've just watched the Storm & Eels game & the two games were as different as night & day!!

Thanks steel, just a bit shattered that it might be the last we see of Ray until he runs out in a Flippers jersey. Lovely effort from a second rower not to die wondering though.

Hey Baggy,
Your Eels beat the Storm, not many clubs can claim that for quite some time. Hope you are happy.

A nice Sunday morning to you Mark.
Oh yes, the Newsreel, a couple of cartoons like Tom & Jerry, Tweety & Sylvester, Larry, Moe and Curley Joe or Shemp, or other comedy, a short serial and then the Main Movie.
For many years at our Saturday afternoon "matinee" there was a weekly running serial of Ali and The Camel. Can never forget it.
Of course back in those days we never had the chocolate coated ice cream in cones like they have at Hoyts/Village or Metro Cinema's these days.
Do you recall the Marella Jubes confectionary?
They are a far cry these days. Marella's were extra hard, lasted longer and certainly made you chew. They were in a green rectangle box. Boxed Fantales, Jaffa's, Milk Shakes (wrapped) and so on.
Thanks for the memories mate. Have a nice day.
Big Pete
