Round twenty one selections

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Sydney Cricket Ground

The Roosters are equal eighth with the Raiders but have a superior points differential to them, and to the three sides above them. Their run home isn't easy, but they only have to travel outside Sydney once between now and the finals series. The Broncos top four prospects were dampened by the loss to the Tigers. Their run home isn't too bad and includes three key games in a row at home. The Chooks have lost Collins and Egan Butcher this week - Matt Lodge (who has impressed) moves into the starting pack and some much less experienced players (May and Thomas) are named on the bench. Taukeiaho is expected to return next week. For the Broncos, Hetherington replaces the suspended Carrigan at lock, and Cobbo returns for the first time since State of Origin on the wing. He's just a winger but, then again, he's a lot more than just a winger. Even without Carrigan, I expect the depth of the Broncos forwards will carry them a long way to victory here. Their backline is young but brimming with talent - providing Adam Reynolds can keep them on track they can pick up what could be a very important two points.

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result – Roosters 34 defeated Broncos 16

Melbourne Storm vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – AAMI Park

The Storm are losing fullbacks like Spinal Tap lose drummers, with Nick Meaney the latest to succumb to a bizarre gardening accident (see the YouTube video for context if confused). Wishart comes in at fullback while an on-loan Tiger (Nofoaluma) plugs a gap in the Storm backline. It's a strange world where a player who can't get a run at the struggling Tigers goes straight into the starting side of an NRL heavyweight. Coates is nearing a return, but not yet. The other big out for the Storm is Justin Olam (Covid) who is replaced in the centres by Grant Anderson. Defending in the centres is a real niche skill set so this is quite the challenge for Anderson. Don't be surprised if the Titans target him with, I dunno, Fifita...surely. Importantly, Brandon Smith returns from suspension and is likely to have an impact. The Titans coach is tinkering with his spine again, hoping to stumble across some magical combination. This time it's Campbell at fullback, Brimson and Boyd in the halves, with Sexton missing out altogether. The Titans have won just three games this season, and won those three narrowly. Two of those wins were way back in March, and their last win was 11 weeks ago. Those victories were against teams outside the top eight. This wouldn't be the biggest upset of the season if it were to happen, but it seems pretty darn unlikely.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 32 defeated Titans 14

Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – 4 Pines Park

It's a rich rivalry with plenty of extra spice on this occasion, with Manly battling for a top eight finish and five of the 'Manly Seven' returning after a self-imposed suspension last week. Manly impressed just about everyone with their resilience last week, despite losing to the Roosters. Hopefully the Sea Eagles squad are galvanised and not divided. The Eels have now done what no other team has done this season, and they've done it twice. The send-off of Cleary obviously helped, but they looked like they were in that game up to that point. Their second half was a little disappointing, but Moses was running around with a broken finger which wouldn't have helped. He's been replaced by Arthur in the halves. Big shoes to fill given the importance of the Moses kicking game to the Eels. In a round choc-full of terrific contests this is probably the best of them. I'm with Manly in front of what should be a packed Brookvale Oval on Friday night.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Eels 36 defeated Sea Eagles 20

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Sunshine Coast Stadium

I'll call this a must-win game for the Bunnies, given their draw leading into the finals. They were a little unlucky against the Sharks last week, with Mitchell missing three extra time opportunities to ice the game. Burgess was sent off late in that game, and he's suspended for this game as a result. He's been terrific in recent weeks and he'll be missed. The Warriors season has been over for a while, but they have been performing admirably under interim coach Stacey Jones. This is a big ask though, particularly away from home.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 16

Result – Rabbitohs 48 defeated Warriors 10

Canberra Raiders vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

Last week a 12 man Panthers outscored the Eels in the second half, proving they can well and truly match it with the best of them without Nathan Cleary. Potentially, they could lose the minor premiership from here (and that round 25 game in Townsville could end up being the game that decides it), so they still have a bit to play for. The Raiders have more to play for though, sitting outside the top eight with a negative points differential. Their draw is favourable from here, but a win on Saturday night and a finals berth looks very likely. Much focus will be on the new halves pairing for the Panthers (Salmon and O'Sullivan), but it's the forwards battle that has me salivating. I lean, albeit slightly, to the Raiders, particularly at home, but the return of Rapana on the wing will help with his kick returns early in sets. The Panthers absolutely clobbered the Raiders earlier this year (36-6) but I see a bit of an upset brewing in this.

Verdict – Raiders by 2

Result – Panthers 26 defeated Raiders 6

Cronulla Sharks vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – PointsBet Stadium

A little bit of history on Saturday night, with Kade Dykes becoming the third generation of the Dykes family to play for the same club. That's only the second time that's happened, and the first time was just one week ago (Zak Fulton for Manly). There is a very big wrap on Dykes, so he' worth watching on debut to see how he goes. I think the Dragons season is over but they may not believe it yet. They certainly have to win this, and that seems unlikely with the Sharks still in the hunt for a top two finish.

Verdict – Sharks by 8

Result – Sharks 24 defeated Dragons 18

Canterbury Bulldogs vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Salter Oval, Bundaberg

The Bulldogs have taken this game to Bundaberg which I'm sure the Cowboys will appreciate as they push for an unlikely minor premiership. Kyle Feldt is out for a few weeks for the Cowboys, replaced by Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow who is more than handy. The Bulldogs are unchanged and in form. While promising, most of their recent wins have been against poor opposition, and they've lost three of their last four against top eight teams. Jeremiah Nanai is some chance of being the top try-scorer this season. That a 19 year old playing in the back row is in that contest blows my thinkering mind, and if he isn't the best new talent in the game I'm going to bed. The Dogs actually beat the Cowboys in Townsville way back in round one but they'll turn the tables on Sunday. A terrific game.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result – Cowboys 28 defeated Bulldogs 14

Wests Tigers vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Campbelltown Sports Stadium

A shout out to Jackson Hastings, who hung around after the game last week for the best part of an hour signing autographs and taking photos with fans, all the while hobbling around with a broken tibula. You'll never see a soccer player doing something like that. Plenty of us (me included) have been calling for Doueihi to play in the halves for the Tigers, and they're a different team. The referee and the bunker can't take this one off the Tigers.

Verdict – Tigers by 16

Result – Knights 14 defeated Tigers 10

Greetings football fans

I have updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp after round 20. Congrats to JhayMare, our top-scorer for the round with 7 from 8. Outstanding work there. The Voyeur maintains their lead at the top of the tipping comp.

If anyone notices anything with the scores that needs attention just let me know.

I will have my previews and selections published on Wednesday.

All the best

News today that the planned upgrades to suburban stadiums for Manly (Brookvale), Cronulla (Shark Park) and Wests Tigers (Leichhardt Oval) totalling $250 million, have been put on hold.

The $300 million upgrade for Penrith is going ahead.

Now I am not an expert on NSW politics and it could be just a coincidence - but the electorate for the NSW Sports Minister is.........Penrith.

And it's a marginal seat.

Nothing to see here,,,move along please, lol. They have no shame, none at all.

"Dia duit gach duine" i dteanga ní mo theanga féin,

Thought I’d try and get in early tonight as I wanna go off and finish watching the last 2 episodes of Star Trek Discovery SE03. Then onto SE04 🤪💥. Woo-Hoo! Just quickly, if you manage to get on here Mr Ashford … have a great trip buddy. Remember that simplicity is the key when cooking fish, but you most probably know that already 😉. OK, let’s do this thing …

Roosters vs. Broncos @ SCG
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Broncos
Bookies Favourite = Roosters

Roosters
"I felt like we were threatening to open it up at lots of stages but we lost complete directions of ourselves. We just didn't collectively do it play after play, set after set to break them open. You could see there were opportunities for the guys to play. End of sets they were a lot better than we were. We cared about the play, not the next five minutes. There's lessons in every game but you celebrate your wins and take your lessons for next week," coach Trent Robinson said.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 62% (28/45)
Post Contact Metres - 662
Tackle Breaks - 38
Missed Tackles - 38

Penalties Conceded - 6

Broncos
"You don't have to be off too far to lose at this level. There was plenty of effort there but just a couple of moments in both halves where they won the battle and in the end they won the war. The Tigers' football over the past five weeks has been very good and they probably shouldn't be sitting where they are on the ladder. We just weren't quite there tonight and the Tigers were. The beauty is we have a short turnaround into the Roosters so we can fix things up pretty quickly and get into Thursday night," coach Kevin Walters said.

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 75% (31/41)
Post Contact Metres - 616
Tackle Breaks - 42
Missed Tackles - 44
Errors - 13
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: I suppose either side could win this one. The Roosters had a good win last week but should’ve done better against a Manly side lacking a bit of experience. The Roosters will have to up the ante this week against a Broncos side that’s not really doing anything wrong at the moment. Yeah, the Broncos had an embarrassing loss at home to the Tigers last week but I’m sure they’ll put in a much better showing this week. Against my better judgement I’ll be tipping the Roosters by 6. Begurk! 🐔 Begurk! 🐔

Storm vs. Titans @ AAMI
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Storm
Bookies Favourite = Storm

Storm
“There was a few peaks and a few troughs as well. I just thought the Warriors played really well, especially the first half, they had us down in our end the whole half basically… I wasn’t sure quite how we were in front at half time to be quite honest. But I thought that was probably the best we have defended in a few weeks. Our ruck was really good, but we did so with not much experience on the edges. Our whole back five is pretty inexperienced. They really stood up tonight," coach Craig Bellamy said.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 81% (27/33)
Post Contact Metres - 632
Tackle Breaks - 31
Missed Tackles - 26
Errors - 7
Penalties Conceded - 8

Titans
"We fought hard in the first half and then obviously let too many soft tries in and had to chase the game at the end. It's the same sort of issues [as past games], inexperience in key positions is hurting us and that's what is costing us," coach Justin Holbrook said.

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 68% (28/41)
Post Contact Metres - 508
Tackle Breaks - 44
Missed Tackles - 50
Errors - 15
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: The Storm were desperate for a win to get back on track last week and they managed it against the Warriors. They weren’t as impressive as we’re used to seeing but the win might just get them up and running again. The Titans were once again pretty awful and I just can’t see how they can win this. They seem to be getting worse as the season goes on and odds are they’ll be collecting the spoon this year. This should be an open and shut case here. Storm by 18.

Manly vs. Eels @ Brookvale
Probability @ 50-50
Ladder Position = Eels
Bookies Favourite = Manly

Manly
"It was full of effort and I thought they stepped up and really had a real dig. Given the lead in and change up with side, four debutants and people coming back from COVID it was a pretty brave effort. We could've done a few things better but with a short turnaround we'll fix it up. We've got a bit of work to do [as a club] but as long as we're all sympathetic we'll get through it. It's been an emotional week in all different aspects," coach Des Hasler said.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 78% (32/41)
Post Contact Metres - 575
Tackle Breaks - 38
Missed Tackles - 38
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 8

Eels
"The first half was good, we played nice and professional. Sometimes it gets hard in that situation where they are a man down and you have got plenty of footy. Our completions were above 90 per cent, we stuck to the plan. They are a very good defensive team so we needed to make sure we ran the footy nice and hard and had plenty of numbers around the ball if we could get an offload to try and break them up. They were down to 12 and competed very hard, and it just got a bit lateral at times but it is two points we will take," coach Brad Arthur said.

Possession - 55%
Completion Rate - 83% (36/43)
Post Contact Metres - 683
Tackle Breaks - 29
Missed Tackles - 21
Errors - 8
Penalties Conceded - 6

Verdict: Not quite sure why Manly are favourites here but still. I know most of the “Magnificent Seven” will be returning and that will definitely give them a huge boost. The Eels were really good in their win against the Panthers, albeit the Panthers were missing Cleary and Luai. Even so, the way they played, the Eels would’ve won anyway. I’m thinking the Eels are not favourites due to their consistent inconsistency. Could you make an argument that because of their inconsistency they might once again be inconsistent and actually win this? I think they can, even without Moses. Eels by 6.

Rabbitohs vs. Warriors @ Sunshine Coast
Probability @ 75-25
Ladder Position = Rabbitohs
Bookies Favourite = Rabbitohs

Rabbitohs
"I thought we handled the extra time pretty well, we just didn't nail our chances, obviously... Latrell is dirty, that [field goals] is a moment he nails a lot of the time and he’s disappointed. But it’s not on him, there was 80 minutes of footy before we got to that point,” coach Jason Demetriou said.

Possession - 53%
Completion Rate - 84% (38/45)
Post Contact Metres - 697
Tackle Breaks - 43
Missed Tackles - 22
Errors - 7
Penalties Conceded - 6

Warriors
"I just thought there was moments in the game, again in the second half we let them score early. The game is about moments and the moments where it mattered we didn't quite get them right. I thought the effort from the boys was outstanding. I thought they dug deep at times, much better than last week," coach Stacey Jones said.

Possession - 50%
Completion Rate - 88% (32/36)
Post Contact Metres - 595
Tackle Breaks - 26
Missed Tackles - 31
Errors - 6
Penalties Conceded - 7

Verdict: The Rabbitohs have rediscovered their mojo as we all know and they were unlucky not to win last week against the Sharks. The Rabbitohs seem to be tracking well heading into finals footy which is just 5 weeks away. Even though the Warriors lost last week to the Storm, they were somewhat impressive and their effort areas were good. Even Craig Bellamy thought they showed a lot more fight. Mind you, they will have to up their game yet again and do it for the full 80 if they’re any hope in this one. I don’t think they’ll be able to do that so I’ll be tipping the Bunnies. Rabbitohs by 14.

Raiders vs. Panthers @ GIO
Probability @ 40-60
Ladder Position = Panthers
Bookies Favourite = Panthers

Raiders
"The last two weeks playing the Warriors and Titans, respectfully with their positions on the table with nothing to lose, they are tough games to play. That game out there tonight was just real chaotic, fast, throwing the ball around, going side to side," coach Ricky Stuart said.

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 78% (32/41)
Post Contact Metres - 622
Tackle Breaks - 50
Missed Tackles - 44
Errors - 10
Penalties Conceded - 6

Panthers
“We won the second half so I was really proud of the boys, actually. I thought they were very courageous. There were some lessons in that game. When Nat first went off we didn’t handle it. They were on fire at the time too and we just couldn’t stem the flow. I couldn’t have asked for much more in the second half. I thought it was really good. Obviously, with the send off and losing your halfback, for a little while there we just didn’t handle that but it is not something we have really done before so we will learn from that and I thought we did in the second half," coach Ivan Cleary said.

Possession - 45%
Completion Rate - 91% (33/36)
Post Contact Metres - 628
Tackle Breaks - 21
Missed Tackles - 29
Errors - 4
Penalties Conceded - 7

Verdict: The Raiders have somehow managed (in my mind at least) to develop their game to the point where they’ll be looking to sneak into and entrench themselves in the top 8. To start that process they will need to try and get over the Panthers this week. The Cleary sending off last week was huge and the 5 weeks he’s copped for that will also be huge. Add to that the Panthers will have the “Princess” (Luai) missing through injury and the Panthers are now more vulnerable to the better sides in the competition. The Raiders have an ideal opportunity to take advantage this week but I still think the Panthers will be way too good for them, even though they’ll be missing Cleary and Luai. It’s not often the Panthers get to “bounce back” after a loss but they will this week. Panthers by 8.

Sharks vs. Dragons @ Shark Park
Probability @ 65-35
Ladder Position = Sharks
Bookies Favourite = Sharks

Sharks
"It was a wild old night, filled with many different things, so to hang in there and hang in there… really tough performance and proud to get away with a win there. It was enjoyable at the end," coach Craig Fitzgibbon said.

Possession - 47%
Completion Rate - 72% (32/44)
Post Contact Metres - 644
Tackle Breaks - 22
Missed Tackles - 43
Errors - 19
Penalties Conceded - 3

Dragons
"I thought even with 15 to go at 16-8 we had our opportunity to get back into it. We didn't get much out of our first half. We had opportunity to be in front at half-time and they got a couple of tries back-to-back. It was the story of the night, then they got three back-to-back in the last 15 minutes defensively for us," coach Anthony Griffin said.

Possession - 46%
Completion Rate - 80% (28/35)
Post Contact Metres - 543
Tackle Breaks - 22
Missed Tackles - 42
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 4

Verdict: The Sharks got up by the barest of margins in a nail-biter last week against the Rabbitohs and deservedly so it might be argued. They were pretty impressive all in all. I thought the Dragons were in with a chance last week against the Cowboys but they just fell away in the second half. Sometimes they show glimpses of what is possible but glimpses ain’t enough to get wins over the good teams and I think they might have their hands full this weekend. The Sharks are the better side here and should win semi-comfortably. Sharks by 12.

Bulldogs vs. Cowboys @ Bundaberg
Probability @ 35-65
Ladder Position = Cowboys
Bookies Favourite = Cowboys

Bulldogs
"It was a bit stressful, we had to do a little bit of defence in the second half. I was really happy we showed a bit of resilience to hold them out. The first half was good and we executed some plays well. I think they're playing well and are playing a brand of footy that suits them. I think they're enjoying their footy and I'm happy for the players and the fans and everyone around," coach Mick Potter said.

Cowboys
"I was pleased with a lot of it, when we had the ball and when we didn't have the ball. I challenged the lads to play our way and they did that tonight. I've learnt a bit about our team over the last 6-10 weeks around the type of language we use. We've got a really talented and excitable group. We play our best when we move the ball but we have to be clear around what that looks like," coach Todd Payten said.

Possession - 54%
Completion Rate - 86% (32/37)
Post Contact Metres - 692
Tackle Breaks - 42
Missed Tackles - 22
Errors - 7
Penalties Conceded - 7

Verdict: The Bulldogs had a good win last week but just remember it was against the Knights. The Cowboys here is a totally different proposition. Then again, the Bulldogs have shown they can cause “upsets” a couple of times this year so you never know. The Cowboys managed to get back in the winner’s circle last week against the Dragons but it took until the second half for them to assert themselves. They looked really good when they did I might add. The Cowboys should have a class edge here but I’m sure Burton may cause some problems. Cowboys by 12.

Tigers vs. Knights @ Campbelltown
Probability @ 60-40
Ladder Position = Knights
Bookies Favourite = Tigers

Tigers
"I'm extremely proud of the boys with what they have done. The journey they went on from last Sunday night [after Cowboys loss] effectively from when things went against us and they had every reason to say 'we can fall into a heap now' ... I'm proud of these guys as a coach because for the last four weeks we've been really good and we've been knocking on the door for a win and for me it's not about how many times I win as a coach, it's about how well we go and how we get better as a team and a club and that's been a really enjoyable moment that's enjoyed over the last month," interim coach Brett Kimmorley said.

Possession - 49%
Completion Rate - 75% (30/40)
Post Contact Metres - 551
Tackle Breaks - 44

Knights
"The first 10 minutes, the first two sets was a shock. Something I didn't see coming in our set. I was really concerned after the first two sets of the game. I'm not quite sure why we would do that. With our attack we missed him (Kalyn Ponga) with the flow and amount of ball we had down there. He's a very good player in terms of attack but at the end of the day that hasn't been our issue this year it's been our defence and resilience, that's my most concern," coach Adam O'Brien said.

Possession - 51%
Completion Rate - 78% (32/41)
Post Contact Metres - 784
Tackle Breaks - 18
Missed Tackles - 36
Errors - 12
Penalties Conceded - 5

Verdict: Not sure about this one. It could possibly go either way. The Tigers got the upset win last week against the Broncos and deservedly so. I read somewhere that the Tigers usually “flop” the week after really big efforts like last week. Does that mean they’ll lose? Not sure. The Knights are costing me points for sure. I just can’t seem to get a handle on them to be honest. I’m almost at the stage where I “drop them” as far as tipping them goes. The Knights have been disappointing this year and knowing my luck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out and win this 🤣. But based on what I’ve seen from the Tigers in the last 2 weeks, I’m tipping them to get up here. Tigers by 8.

Let’s finish off with another “Song of the Week”…

Don’t care who you are or what you say, everyone has a bit of “soul” in them. This one is from my era and is a cracker. Wish I could've been in the USA when I was younger…😍

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week. Cheers 🐔 🐔 🐔

I live in Penrith and am a Panthers supporter. However, as far as I can see, we don't need a new stadium. Everyone I've spoken to feels the same way. We are attached to the current one, to being able to sit on the hill, to leaving things the way they are. And while the upgrade is to cost $300 million dollars, there are people waiting in Emergency Departments in hospitals who cannot get a bed. Priorities.

Wrong "P" word Isobel ... Politics!

Now if your Local Member were the Health Minister instead of the Sports Minister logic may prevail.
Unfortunately, your local Minister is the liar and minister for preferential treatment, Stuart Ayers, who has exercised his "right" to continue representing the good people of his electorate and continue taking back-handers from all his business contacts and developers (his other ministry was for Enterprise, Investment and Trade).
All a far cry from caring about the sick and incapacitated!

That's alright Isobel - good to know how the fans feel about the changes proposed.

Welcome back, your sarcasm and wit has been missed. Keep an eye out for the rope that I have dropped down to you, tie it around your waist nice and tight and I will try and stop you falling(down the tipping ladder.

Ignore Rocket, he he is struggling with poor form and when someone gets one over him he gets nasty. Lucky you aren't on the official tipping ladder, Rocket is plummeting down at the moment and he may take some collateral damage down with him.

Hi Christine

I did catch that on the news, I hope it's not an omen for Sundays match against the Knights. I look at these occurrences as signs or coincidences that relate to something.

Like driving home on Thursday morning, I almost ran over a wild turkey that reminded be of a rooster and I thought the Roosters will beat the broncos, scary what the outcome was.

Anyway, I must be tired, sitting in prison at close to 1am and I have to work right through til 4pm Sunday arvo.

Take care

Ricky Stuart doesn't have the temperament to be a good coach. Whether the kid was right or wrong, the incident happened when he(the player) was 12 years old!
Bitter and twisted,Ricky,,,bitter and twisted. And,it isn't the first time he has shown his true colours.

Yes he should be fined and suspended

Well at least Ricky's got one thing going in his favour he's not a Tiger's supporter I'm not sure there could be anything worse then having to stand up and say I'm a tiger supporter
