Round one selections

Manly Sea Eagles vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Our very first game of the year takes place in a North American desert, but I caught some of the Superbowl and the facilities look pretty good. I suspect these two teams get things underway because the NRL hoped Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe would be on hand for the kick-off. I'm pretty sure Rusty can't make it, but Hugh could still make an appearance. Jason Saab made the bold declaration that the best four NRL teams are in Vegas on Sunday - a bold declaration indeed given neither of these sides made the top eight last year. Perhaps the bright lights of American media got the better of him, or perhaps he's taking lessons from former President Trump - the truth is whatever you say it is. The Sea Eagles have impressed during the trials. I'm not the only one to point out that Manly are a very different animal when Tom Trbojevic is on the field. He seems fit and well. The pairing of Cherry-Evans with Brooks in the halves could be a surprise packet this season - Brooks will likely appreciate having an elder statesman calling most of the shots. The Bunnies have named the best centre in the NRL on Sunday, but he'll be playing at fullback. With Wighton suspended and Graham injured the centre pairing of Tass and Kennar will likely be targeted. Note the slightly smaller dimensions of this field (compared with regular NRL venues). With less room to move, scoring points could be harder than typical. Something of an upset here, but it's how I roll.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result – Sea Eagles 36 defeated Rabbitohs 24

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

I'll admit it. When Ezra Mam scored his third try in ten minutes in the 2023 NRL grand final I thought they were home. So did Thinker Junior, and three of his friends, who departed Thinker Manor and headed over to the rooftop party at the Broncos to celebrate. Ah rugby league, you unpredictable devil. The Broncos that went so close last year haven't recruited any big name players from elsewhere for this season, rather they are backing their mostly young squad to keep improving. They have lost some quality in Farnworth and Flegler, but this is an exciting squad. The Broncos won the pre-season challenge this year with a bunch of kids, so they have depth in the roster. The move of Cobbo into the centre is an interesting one. I certainly hope it works, because Deine Mariner should be playing first grade rugby league. As for the Chooks, they'll be missing Waerea-Hargreaves and Dominic Young on Sunday, but they're a strong side and plenty expect them to go close again in 2024. The Chooks will be hoping to extend the playing minutes of Spencer Leniu, but that's hardly going to happen overnight. Given that, the Broncos might wear the Chooks down through the 80 minutes. Mam and Walsh will be hard to contain through the middle if that happens.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Roosters 20 defeated Broncos 10

Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

These sides last met in week one of the finals at this very venue, with the Knights prevailing in the 89th minute of an extra-time ripper. Quite a few changes since then, with the Knights losing Dominic Young, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Kurt Mann from the 2023 squad. The Raiders have lost Jack Wighton, but will also be without the suspended Corey Horsburgh and Sebastian Kris. The Raiders will have some new talent on show, which is likely to include Ethan Strange who is a promising talent. In recent years the Raiders have often won their round one game but their record over the Knights is rather poor. At the back end of last season, the Knights won their last six games at home, and I'll be tipping them to do the same in front of what will likely be a hefty crowd by Thursday night standards.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Result – Raiders 28 defeated Knights 12

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Go Media Stadium

The Sharks almost always lose in round one of the season - 9 of the last 10 in fact. Given that alarming statistic, and given they have to travel to New Zealand and play a team that have won their last five in a row at home, it's hard to tip against the Warriors here. To make matters worse, I'm hearing suggestions Nicho Hynes isn't as likely to play in round one as the Sharks are letting on. Note that Roger Tuivasa-Sheck makes his return to the game he prefers - it's always nice to welcome home a Dally M medal winner.

Verdict – Warriors by 7

Result – Sharks 16 defeated Warriors 12

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – AAMI Park

While the Sharks can't win a round one game it seems like the Storm can't lose one. Coach Craig Bellamy is yet to lose a round one game, in a streak that stretches back 20 years. That's a proper streak. The streak gets tested here, taking on a team that have now won 3 premierships in a row. That's a proper streak too. Notably, the Panthers lost in round one last season backing up from a World Club Challenge loss. They're doing that again this year, but this year they played the WCC match on the other side of the world. Note that the Storm have done some travelling of their own, playing a trial game in Fiji. A much shorter flight of course. Here's a statistic that will surprise a few - the Panthers have just one victory from their last 8 matches at AAMI Park. For a team that haven't done a lot of losing in recent years that's quite the statistic. I'm with the home side here, who will be keen to put on a show before the city of Melbourne gets all giddy and stupid for that other football code. And, more than anything, I'm hoping for a safe return to football for Ryan Papenhuyzen. Football can be a cruel game, but not that cruel. Please.

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result – Storm 8 defeated Panthers 0

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – CommBank Stadium

The Eels are the shortest favourites to win in round one. Now full disclosure, I've been fishing in the sun in the tropics for two days, so there's some chance I've fried my brain, but I'm giving the Bulldogs a sneaky chance in this. Not just a sneaky chance...I'm actually tipping them. The Dogs have done an extraordinary job to update their roster in super quick time. It's a lot of changes and a lot of moving parts to get right, but they can win this. Ex-Panthers Burton, Kikau, Crichton and Salmon are all in the starting thirteen, so they might come together as a unit quicker than expected.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result – Panthers 26 defeated Bulldogs 8

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – CBus Super Stadium

The trouble with this split round is trying to work out who will be available to play. There's a lot of guessing going on here. One of my guesses is that David Fifita will be fit to play by Saturday week. If he doesn't, then this contest evens up considerably. Jayden Campbell is highly unlikely, and AJ Brimson has to pass concussion protocols. The Dragons have some issues of their own, with Liddle and Lawrie battling injuries. It seems they are more likely to play than not, but who knows? What I do know is that the Titans have a solid recent record against the Dragons, and are almost always a better side at home. Note that both clubs have shiny new high profile coaches this year...cranky Des and cranky Shane. I'm with cranky Des.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Titans 4

Redcliffe Dolphins vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

A Queensland derby to get things underway at the spiritual home of rugby league in Brisbane. Unusual that it doesn't involve the Broncos, but I'm expecting a decent turn-out through the gates regardless. Both sides have lost key forwards to season-ending injuries before the season even started. Yuck. The Dolphins knocked off the Roosters in their NRL debut last season, and I think they can upset their favoured rivals here too. Flegler and Farnworth are quality additions, and Bennett will have them primed as always. The Cowboys took a while to get warm last season, and that's been the case more often than not in recent years.

Verdict – Dolphins by 2

Result – Cowboys 43 defeated Dolphins 18

Greetings football fans

If you're reading this you've already found our tipping page for round one of the 2024 NRL season.

Those of you that have participated in previous seasons probably know what to do. For those new registered tipsters, if you sign in to the website (there is a 'Sign in' link at the top right of screen) you will see a link on this page called 'show/hide the tipping entry form'. Click that link, and you will see all the games for that round. Select your teams, and then click the submit button at the bottom of the form. Do all that, and your tips are in. You can go back and change your tips at any point up until the kick off for the first game of each round. Once that first game has started, no more changes can be made.

Once you've done this a few times it's pretty easy, but if you have any questions or aren't sure what you are doing, feel free to ask a question in the comments section.

Best of luck everybody.

Hi Thinker
Hope your well and ready for a fantastic season ahead.
This might be a real dumb dumb question. With Round 1 being a split round kind of and no team lists for 6 games until next week(maybe I'm wrong there)
Do we still tip the whole round prior to game 1.
Sorry and thank you's in advance

The Thinker's picture

@The Last Samurai

That's actually a very smart question. I hadn't even thought of it. Sadly, the answer is yes - tips for all the round 1 games need to be submitted before that first kick-off in Vegas.

And welcome back, sir.

All the best

I was going to ask the same question as The Last Samurai, about tipping with the split games for round 1.

It will make it interesting for you too Thinker, doing the previews for us to mull over, as they will be done before you know the teams being put forward. Will Wally Lewis have his tips in before the Sunday matches?
Cheers,
Mary

Hey Frens,

Firstly, thanks to the Boss for having us all here for another year. Here’s hoping your hosting costs don’t go up too much buddy 😱. You’re a good man doing a good thing. Really appreciate it bro’. Cheers.

Yeah, I’ve been MIA since the Grand Final but my time was 100% taken up diving down “rabbit holes” as it were. I thought Covid was the biggest lie ever told to humanity 🤭 but during the off-season I came across something that’s even bigger … the biggest lie in human history as far as I’m concerned. I won’t say too much about it here (for various reasons) but I can tell you it has completely changed my life and how I look at things now.

Once I realised what was going on, all the shenanigans and bad stuff happening in the world today suddenly made much more sense. While this “biggest lie” is utterly despicable and unforgivable, it somehow brought a certain peace to me so I suppose that’s a silver lining. Not trying to sound all mysterious or anything but all I’ll say to finish this little story is … “The difficulty is not proving it. The difficulty is accepting it.”

Having been away so long I have absolutely no clue as to how sides will go in Round 1 but I do know that the Mighty Roosters have won a couple of pre-season games in style but then again, they, like most sides I would imagine, would have had a lot of reserve grade boys running out in those games. Nah, the real stuff starts on Sunday in LV, followed by the other games next week.

Looking forward to the season getting underway but strangely, maybe due to what I discussed in the opening of this post, I’m not super excited. I’m guessing I’m about 75% excited compared to 100% in previous years. You never know, it might ramp back up as the season goes on and especially if the Chooks go well 😂. OK, let’s do this thing …

I haven’t had time to suss out the games as yet so this will be short and sweet. Hopefully it’ll all fall back into some sort of rhythm by Round 2. Round 1 is always a stab in the dark for me. Don’t forget you’ll need to put your tips in for all games in Round 1 before kickoff Sunday. Meh, it is what it is. Fingers crossed eh?

Happy NRL day, football fans.

If any of our registered tipsters are having issues with submitting their tips, feel free to put your tips in the comments section before the Sea Eagles v Rabbitohs kicks off today.

There is some chance the tipping form may close early (what with strange timezones and what-not). Again, if that should happen, just put your tips in the comments.

Best of luck everyone

Watching Rabbits v Manly on Kayo and 12 mins in during a pause in play 3 different players with head cuts and blood flowing freely as they get vaseline and bandages applied , I had to chuckle at the thought of an American watching our game in horror for the first time as those players casually get back in line for the next play !!
A great contest so far.

Reese Walsh SCORES to put his team back in contention !
For all his youthfull inappropriate moments , I still love Reese Walsh !
(and I'm not even a Bronco fan!)

MGM's picture

Where IS everyone ?
I would like , at this early stage of the season, to put forward a request/suggestion/challenge to all you fellow tipsters out there.
Please consider sharing your thoughts and comments in real time during the matches this year.... At least the "free to air" ones , but many of you watch Foxtel, Kayo, etc... and it's so easy from your lounge in front of your telly to have your mobile device (laptop, phone, whatever) , on the coffee table and logged in to the Thinker.
Maybe a lot of you have enough company with you watching the games to enhance the experience, but even if you do, how about it.
My wife has started to take some interest in the Game but, for the most part, my comments fall on "deaf ears" :)
And here too lately !
I'm sure there's plenty of you out there in Thinkerland that might just enjoy the NRL experience , a bit more at least, with some banter during and immediately after a match , but it seems you're all logged out!... :(

Mary S's picture

I haven't logged out MGM - not yet anyway!!
Roosters certainly played a fast and furious game today, which seemed to make the Broncos efforts lack lustre in comparison.

So please Reece Walsh got his try, wish he was able to get more - just not today!
Cheers,
Mary

The story found below -
‘Like human cockfighting... is this normal?’: Hilarious way US reacted to NRL’s Vegas extravaganza was a fun read.

MGM's picture

Good on you Mary !
I was wondering where to find U.S. reactions and comments to the matches today ... where did you find this one?
P.S.
Tipping the odds/favourites is a 100% fail so far this season !

MGM's picture

P.P.S.
One comment 5 hours after kick-off in Las Vegas is a great example of why I've put out the suggestion/challenge to you all . :)

The Thinker's picture

Apologies, MGM and Mary S

I usually keep an eye on things here during the big games.

There's been plenty of critics and naysayers about this whole Vegas shindig, but most would accept that it's been a successful venture for now.

And it was nice to see Luke Brooks smiling.

The Roosters were the home team in the US, and even wore the red, white and blue.

That result makes sense now :-)

An article in the New York Post this morning:

NRL shows rugby’s potential in America with mesmerizing, bone-rattling thrill in Las Vegas

OK Aussies, I’m hooked.

They had me at the first bone-rattling hit between two players wearing no helmets or pads that could be heard and felt from the press box in the sky at Allegiant Stadium, which feels like its miles from the pitch below.

Then they really reeled me in at the sight of another player with blood streaming down the side of his head from an incidental hit — a minor scratch depending on whom you ask — that was quickly treated with a bandage wrapped tightly around his forehead that acted as a tourniquet.

Play on.

Unlike in the NFL, where those blue tents on the sidelines are occupied with players having injuries tended to as often as people check in and out of those hourly motels on the outskirts of the Vegas strip, the National Rugby League plays on despite the constant raw brutality to its rhythm.

Watching the historic NRL doubleheader Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium, where the Manly Sea Eagles defeated the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Sydney Roosters defeated the Brisbane Broncos, the one thought that sat constantly in my head was that these Rugby players must think the NFL players are soft by comparison.

That, of course, isn’t the least bit true.

But what is true is this: The Rugby League I watched Saturday night was evidence that these players are tougher and require far more endurance than any of our mainstream sports do from their respective athletes.

Because it’s brutal and fast and it feels like there are as many stoppages in play as Jets quarterbacks throw touchdown passes in their games. Which is to say: there aren’t many.

Three weeks ago, I sat inside Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl 2024 and soaked in the largest, most spectacular event in American sports for the 32nd time as a sportswriter.

Unlike some of my colleagues who’ve grown tired of the Super Bowl because the larger it becomes the less the access to the players and officials we’re granted, I still get up for covering the game the way the players get up for playing in it.

On Saturday night, on the same sheet of natural-grass turf the Chiefs and 49ers played on 21 nights earlier for the Lombardi Trophy (faint images of both teams’ logos were still visible in the grass at midfield), I witnessed another memorable sports spectacle in the form of that NRL doubleheader involving four of Australia’s most popular clubs.

Even though these were real, regular-season contests of consequence with points at stake and not fluffy exhibitions, the point of this doubleheader had less to do with points in the NRL standings than it did a bigger picture for the sport.

And the bigger picture in play here wasn’t lost on me as I witnessed and covered my first rugby match in more than 40 years as a sportswriter and I did so thoroughly stimulated by a curiosity to learn the game and get a feel for how it’ll translate in America.

For the NRL, this was a dip of the toes into American waters and it presented a strong case for the uninitiated like myself and the many Americans inside Allegiant Stadium and watching it on TV to take further interest.

“I think we’ve made a huge impact,’’ Manly halfback Luke Brooks said after scoring a “try’’ (rugby’s version of a touchdown) in his debut match with the club after 11 seasons with the Wests Tigers.

Scott Penn, the Manly owner and chairman who lives in New York City, called the night and the week “a huge success’’ and added, “this is building for the future. We put on a show. We’re showing America what the NRL can do. It’s spectacular entertainment. It’s been amazing experience.’’

No argument there.

Play on.

“The occasion itself was a big occasion,’’ Manly coach Anthony Seibold said. “It was a great opportunity for us. We wanted our most important 80 minutes of the week-and-a-half we’ve been here to be tonight, and we feel like we played some really good footy. We’re proud to come out here and represent the NRL and proud to get a win.”

The show was indeed terrific. And it was played in front of an announced crowd of just more than 40,000, which is pretty impressive for a sport few in this country know much about. In fairness, some 14,000 Aussies made the trip from Down Under just for the game, so the crowd was heavy on Aussies.

Everyone in attendance was treated to some memorable NFL-like moments.

In the first match, when Manly’s Reuben Garrick took a pass and crossed the goal line for a “try,’’ he celebrated by smashing the ball onto the turf with a violent spike.

“He talked about doing it during the week; that was a Gronk spike,’’ Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans said with a smile, referring to former Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski and his patented spikes.

In the second match, we got a true Patrick Mahomes moment when Joseph Manu from the Sydney made a magical no-look behind-the-back pass to teammate Junior Pauga as he crossed the goal line for a “try’’ to extend the Roosters’ lead at the time.

To borrow a slogan from a PGA Tour marketing campaign a few years ago: “These guys are good.’’

“We were not just representing Manly, we were not just fighting for two points, we wanted to get the game exposure over here,’’ Cherry-Evans said. “As a player, you try not to think of the bigger-picture things. You try and go out there and perform at your best.’’

They did.

And it was a marvelous climax to what was a cool week of build-up surrounding the NRL playing foreign soil other than Australia and New Zealand for the first time in the 108-year history of the league.

The pre-game buzz was highlighted by a fan fest on Friday night in the old-town Freemont Street section of Vegas with some 5,000 fans packing the streets and sidewalks to have a look at the players from the four clubs on stage and then walking a red carpet.

Unlike with the Super Bowl, where the players are essentially kept under wraps all week aren’t seen by the fans until they’re on the field on game day, this was a unique intimate experience for the rugby league fans.

There were a number of moments that struck chords for me during the week, beginning with the fan fest and including the genuine appreciation the players from the teams had for being fortunate enough to be a part of this historic opportunity. Many of those I spoke to felt the responsibility of this week to help grow their sport in America.

While there’s a finality to the Super Bowl every year because it’s the ultimate, final game of the season, Saturday night’s NRL doubleheader felt like a new beginning.

The two matches marked the opening of the NRL’s 2024 season and, more importantly, they marked the beginning of a five-year commitment the league has made to open it season in Las Vegas.

Hopefully, the NRL will learn from this week and find even better ways to present and promote its product even better, and that should include better player access to the media during the build-up.

Nothing will sell the product better than the players, and the NRL is not short on remarkable athletes, outgoing personalities and characters. The league needs to showcase that better going forward by making them more available to the media so people can get to know them.

“If we can make an impact and it’s a bigger-picture thing, it’s great for our game,’’ Cherry-Evans said. “I hope the Americans have taken notice. I hope they enjoyed tonight.’’

I took notice.

I enjoyed the night.

And I’ll look forward to watching more rugby league in the future, because I’m hooked.

Thankyou Thinker for posting that great response from a U.S. sports juorno , that was just what I was hoping to see from one (or more) of them after our boys put on such a good show.
I'm not so sure about his idea of getting More access to the players ... they already did plenty promotional stuff in the lead-up. maybe not all of that appeared on U.S.telly.
But , no offense to the many smart , articulate gentlemen players in our game , there is also a fair contingent that nobody should ever let anywhere Neeaarr a microphone or interviewer (I'm looking straight at YOU Leniu!!)
Last night I had consumed a "few" bourbons by the time I saw that Idiot responding on camera and dismissing the whole issue he was responsible for smearing our International image with.
I immediately typed a comment here but thought I should wait a while and read it again today before posting it.
I don't feel that it needs editing and will post it if anyone is interested in reading.
