Round one selections

Manly Sea Eagles vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Sunday afternoon – Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Our very first game of the year takes place in a North American desert, but I caught some of the Superbowl and the facilities look pretty good. I suspect these two teams get things underway because the NRL hoped Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe would be on hand for the kick-off. I'm pretty sure Rusty can't make it, but Hugh could still make an appearance. Jason Saab made the bold declaration that the best four NRL teams are in Vegas on Sunday - a bold declaration indeed given neither of these sides made the top eight last year. Perhaps the bright lights of American media got the better of him, or perhaps he's taking lessons from former President Trump - the truth is whatever you say it is. The Sea Eagles have impressed during the trials. I'm not the only one to point out that Manly are a very different animal when Tom Trbojevic is on the field. He seems fit and well. The pairing of Cherry-Evans with Brooks in the halves could be a surprise packet this season - Brooks will likely appreciate having an elder statesman calling most of the shots. The Bunnies have named the best centre in the NRL on Sunday, but he'll be playing at fullback. With Wighton suspended and Graham injured the centre pairing of Tass and Kennar will likely be targeted. Note the slightly smaller dimensions of this field (compared with regular NRL venues). With less room to move, scoring points could be harder than typical. Something of an upset here, but it's how I roll.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 7

Result – Sea Eagles 36 defeated Rabbitohs 24

Sydney Roosters vs Brisbane Broncos – Sunday afternoon – Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

I'll admit it. When Ezra Mam scored his third try in ten minutes in the 2023 NRL grand final I thought they were home. So did Thinker Junior, and three of his friends, who departed Thinker Manor and headed over to the rooftop party at the Broncos to celebrate. Ah rugby league, you unpredictable devil. The Broncos that went so close last year haven't recruited any big name players from elsewhere for this season, rather they are backing their mostly young squad to keep improving. They have lost some quality in Farnworth and Flegler, but this is an exciting squad. The Broncos won the pre-season challenge this year with a bunch of kids, so they have depth in the roster. The move of Cobbo into the centre is an interesting one. I certainly hope it works, because Deine Mariner should be playing first grade rugby league. As for the Chooks, they'll be missing Waerea-Hargreaves and Dominic Young on Sunday, but they're a strong side and plenty expect them to go close again in 2024. The Chooks will be hoping to extend the playing minutes of Spencer Leniu, but that's hardly going to happen overnight. Given that, the Broncos might wear the Chooks down through the 80 minutes. Mam and Walsh will be hard to contain through the middle if that happens.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Roosters 20 defeated Broncos 10

Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Thursday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

These sides last met in week one of the finals at this very venue, with the Knights prevailing in the 89th minute of an extra-time ripper. Quite a few changes since then, with the Knights losing Dominic Young, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Kurt Mann from the 2023 squad. The Raiders have lost Jack Wighton, but will also be without the suspended Corey Horsburgh and Sebastian Kris. The Raiders will have some new talent on show, which is likely to include Ethan Strange who is a promising talent. In recent years the Raiders have often won their round one game but their record over the Knights is rather poor. At the back end of last season, the Knights won their last six games at home, and I'll be tipping them to do the same in front of what will likely be a hefty crowd by Thursday night standards.

Verdict – Knights by 8

Result – Raiders 28 defeated Knights 12

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Go Media Stadium

The Sharks almost always lose in round one of the season - 9 of the last 10 in fact. Given that alarming statistic, and given they have to travel to New Zealand and play a team that have won their last five in a row at home, it's hard to tip against the Warriors here. To make matters worse, I'm hearing suggestions Nicho Hynes isn't as likely to play in round one as the Sharks are letting on. Note that Roger Tuivasa-Sheck makes his return to the game he prefers - it's always nice to welcome home a Dally M medal winner.

Verdict – Warriors by 7

Result – Sharks 16 defeated Warriors 12

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – AAMI Park

While the Sharks can't win a round one game it seems like the Storm can't lose one. Coach Craig Bellamy is yet to lose a round one game, in a streak that stretches back 20 years. That's a proper streak. The streak gets tested here, taking on a team that have now won 3 premierships in a row. That's a proper streak too. Notably, the Panthers lost in round one last season backing up from a World Club Challenge loss. They're doing that again this year, but this year they played the WCC match on the other side of the world. Note that the Storm have done some travelling of their own, playing a trial game in Fiji. A much shorter flight of course. Here's a statistic that will surprise a few - the Panthers have just one victory from their last 8 matches at AAMI Park. For a team that haven't done a lot of losing in recent years that's quite the statistic. I'm with the home side here, who will be keen to put on a show before the city of Melbourne gets all giddy and stupid for that other football code. And, more than anything, I'm hoping for a safe return to football for Ryan Papenhuyzen. Football can be a cruel game, but not that cruel. Please.

Verdict – Storm by 2

Result – Storm 8 defeated Panthers 0

Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday afternoon – CommBank Stadium

The Eels are the shortest favourites to win in round one. Now full disclosure, I've been fishing in the sun in the tropics for two days, so there's some chance I've fried my brain, but I'm giving the Bulldogs a sneaky chance in this. Not just a sneaky chance...I'm actually tipping them. The Dogs have done an extraordinary job to update their roster in super quick time. It's a lot of changes and a lot of moving parts to get right, but they can win this. Ex-Panthers Burton, Kikau, Crichton and Salmon are all in the starting thirteen, so they might come together as a unit quicker than expected.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 2

Result – Panthers 26 defeated Bulldogs 8

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – CBus Super Stadium

The trouble with this split round is trying to work out who will be available to play. There's a lot of guessing going on here. One of my guesses is that David Fifita will be fit to play by Saturday week. If he doesn't, then this contest evens up considerably. Jayden Campbell is highly unlikely, and AJ Brimson has to pass concussion protocols. The Dragons have some issues of their own, with Liddle and Lawrie battling injuries. It seems they are more likely to play than not, but who knows? What I do know is that the Titans have a solid recent record against the Dragons, and are almost always a better side at home. Note that both clubs have shiny new high profile coaches this year...cranky Des and cranky Shane. I'm with cranky Des.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Dragons 28 defeated Titans 4

Redcliffe Dolphins vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

A Queensland derby to get things underway at the spiritual home of rugby league in Brisbane. Unusual that it doesn't involve the Broncos, but I'm expecting a decent turn-out through the gates regardless. Both sides have lost key forwards to season-ending injuries before the season even started. Yuck. The Dolphins knocked off the Roosters in their NRL debut last season, and I think they can upset their favoured rivals here too. Flegler and Farnworth are quality additions, and Bennett will have them primed as always. The Cowboys took a while to get warm last season, and that's been the case more often than not in recent years.

Verdict – Dolphins by 2

Result – Cowboys 43 defeated Dolphins 18

Dear Thinker,
Congratulations and Huge respect to you and your team . It's only a small team and you've managed to build, I think, the best Tipping site available on the internet - Not just a tipping comp , it's a tipping site.
Over the years I've watched and read the comments section and it did take a little while before joining in, but once I saw the friendship and respect tipsters had for each other here , I could tell this was a forum (unlike so many others) that is safe , fun and friendly.
...That's the main thing that sets you apart, Thinker.
There are 78 tipsters this year and a fair few are first timers and I would like to encourage them to voice their opinions and comments here.
But you other guys (50 or so) need to show our newcomers what you showed me when I first signed up here 5 or 6 years ago.
This year the NRL has kicked the season off with the Biggest most Expensive and Risky season opener in it's History ... AND it's been HUGELY successful !
And if That wasn't enough for you (all) to dust off the cobwebs and make a Comment there's even been a juicy controversy complete with an idiot and his coach trying to take the Shine off it all !!

You don't have to say much ... you newbies will soon see that most people here keep it short and succinct and there's only a few Long-winded and Over-opinionated contributors like yours truly and maybe the Biggest Newbie of them all (haha).
.. I've been dying to post my opinion on Leniu and his equally idiotic and embarrassing coach but I don't want to dominate the comments section any more than I already have , so I've been waiting for over 48 hours now for SOME OF YOU to SAY SOMETHING !...PLEASE!
... To you newbies ....It's not normally like this.

It's alright MGM, don't blow a gasket 😤😂😂over Leniu. The incident left a sour taste in the mouth, on what was an excellent & historic occasion, He was an idiot and I bet he won't do it again in a hurry!!

The Thinker has made comment in a post above, about trying to cut the number of ads appearing, and this problem maybe making a difference to whether tipsters want to comment, as the ads are very frustrating when they continue to appear.

I now have the programme BitDefender on my computer, which makes a huge difference to that problem.

Cheers,
Mary

I must admit Mary I can't relate to that problem. I've been here for some years now and never seen an ad .
I have Trend Micro with the Ad-Blocker activated.
The ad-blocker causes a problem occasionally when I'm watching Catch-up TV , but I just flick it off for that particular show and problem solved.

Cameron Munster ruled out for the Storm v Panthers on Friday night.....dagnabbit

It sneaked up on us a little - but the Knights vs Raiders is on tonight from Newcastle.

Not sure there will be any interest, but I'll be hanging around on the site tonight if anyone wants to chat about the game.

All the best

The Thinker

What's happened to some of the newbies (and the oldies) that haven't entered the rest of their tips for Round 1, here in the comments section??
I know there are 6 hours remaining to decide, but thought some would be in by now!!

Cheers,
Mary

Good luck getting Josh Papalii to the ground if your not allowed to lift one of his tree trunks off the ground !

The Thinker's picture

@MGM

Good point...I can think of a few players that will be harder to stop based on that interpretation.

Knights seem a bit nervous tonight.

The Thinker's picture

Knights completion rate to half time - 13 from 20 (I think).

Hard to beat anyone with numbers like that.

Great crowd tonight...as expected.

Gummy Sharks's picture

Well done all. Not a one of us tipped the Raiders.

The Thinker's picture

@Gummy Sharks

I used to have a theory that if you backed every outsider in the first five round of every NRL season you would end up in front. It's holding up this season...so far.

All the best

The Thinker

Gummy Sharks's picture

Thinker I had the same approach to Big Bash cricket games. Back the outsider in the two horse race and see what happened. Some years you did quite well out of it.

Gummy Sharks's picture

Ok, too much time on my hands today. Have a bit of a theory that I'll throw out there for comments and criticisms. You may or may not remember my rather harsh criticisms of Matt Moylan over the last few seasons. Basically I thought he was being paid $400,000 a year to play touch footy and Cronulla took the field with only 12 players each week. Cam McInnes covered for him one week and made 70 odd tackles in a game. Got me thinking about team morale and what the younger players in a club must think when they can't get a start in first grade yet are probably on much less money but ready to do twice the work if the chance arrives. So I've come up with a list of teams that in my humble opinion will struggle to win the premiership this year because they have a Matt Moylan type player as well. First off, Cronulla, Talakai you're in my sights old mate. Manly, Luke Brooks, huge money, little talent. Saw him do a dropout once that went 5 metres. Saints, Zac Lomax. Wow, even his coach said to him the other day you're only the 22nd best centre in the comp. Ouch! Newcastle, Bradman Best. Vastly overpaid for his meagre efforts. Thought about adding Jason Taumalolo and Nth Qld as well. Yep, they're on the list. What do you think? Any players to add? I'll show myself out.

BigPeteBx's picture

G'day Sharkie (Gummy) - nice to see you here making a few choice words sound out. I've got to head out shortly but was checking in to see if any of our "older" Comrades were having choice words. Who would have thought Knights being at home and tipped by nearly all media predictions (except Deb Knight at 2GB) would go down in a heap like they did. I'll be careful saying that as my wife follows Knights. I personally feel that Luke Brooks is destined for a big season and with DCE alongside him, Brooks will get more chances than he did at Tigers. He's already, in games played to date, shown confidence and that can only grow. Too early yet for me to revoke my words. Take care, good luck in NRL24 and keep well - BigPeteBx.

BigPeteBx's picture

Howdy Tippers - what happened to Tigers717 this season/tipping comp. I felt after the top finish "it" had, it would have been an instant starter for Thinkers NRL24 Tipping.

MGM's picture

@ Gummie Sharks,
Nice concept Gummie.
As soon as I saw Bradman Best on your list I had to agree.... too often lately when one leg of my same game multi fails he has been the culprit !

MGM's picture

Warriors v Sharks 13 mins in - Luke Metcalf just made me laugh out loud as he sidesteps and leaves 3 sharks defenders tackling each other and romps in for a try!
You guys have to try and find that footage , so glad I forked out for Kayo.

Mary S's picture

Tipping R1 - and another one bites the dust!!!

Cheers,
Mary

Halfway through the first round of 2024 and the quality of the football thus far is as good as any finals rounds that I can think of.
Well done Storm , what an incredible record you have defended tonight!!
Loving it even though I am 0 from 4 so far !
Should have subscribed to your underdog theory Thinker !

MGM's picture

P.S.
Sorry about the misspell Gummy !

Gummy Sharks's picture

@MGM. Agree about the standard of footy so far. Can't really remember a year where the starts have been so high quality as these games so far. Most impressive side so far? Probably the Storm for me. They just don't make many mistakes, play as a team/hunt as a pack and tend to capitalise on any opportunities they get. Was interested to see that the Raiders didn't seem to miss Jack Wighton in the slightest. Thought the Sharks went ok. Had the nerves tested when they were down 12 nil after 15 minutes but then they drew a line in the sand and hung in there until the Warriors tired. Talakai had his best game for a long time. If he plays like that each week I'll stay off his back.

Hardyards's picture

Well, only a few tipped the cowboys this week. Great defence and varied attack with Drinky running from every side. Awesome first round win while dismembering the ‘fins’ attack and isolating the hammer all game. Convincing win to the Cows.

Ready to send this tomorrow afternoon 😂😂

Mary S's picture

Like your style Hardyards - hope you're 100% correct.

Cheers,
Mary

I'm in trouble already was looking at a duck egg.

That’s the start I wanted from the cowboys. Great off season.
