Canterbury Bulldogs vs Sydney Roosters - Friday night – ANZ Stadium
I haven't a clue who wins this fixture, but here's one prediction I will get right - Laurie Daley will be watching. The Roosters and Bulldogs playmakers get yet another opportunity to step up and demonstrate they deserve a Blues jersey this year. As a young gadabout The Thinker was rather keen on a young lady in first year psychology but it went nowhere. If only I had as many chances as this lot are getting to impress - perhaps I should have studied in New South Wales. Some big returns for the Dogs - James Graham is back to yell and headbutt and bite his way to victory; Reynolds is back to trip his way to victory; Eastwood is back to dance his way to victory - I do like a big man who can shimmy and shake just before the point of impact. Clearly those inclusions level the contest, but the Roosters are a vastly more dynamic team in attack. The tricolours are in a rather baffling situation at the moment - they've lost more games than they've won, but they have the best points differential in the competition. That tells you that when they lose they don't lose by much and when they win they fire. With that in mind, I'm considering a few margin bets - Bulldogs by 1-6 points and Roosters by 13+. Note that in round eight the Tigers beat the Bulldogs by 24 points and in round nine the Roosters beat the Tigers by 32 points. It's never that cut and dried but it's the chickens for mine.
Verdict – Roosters by 13
Result - Roosters 24 defeated Bulldogs 10
North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
Neither side looked like a top four team after round one but a lot has changed. In fact, the two teams that walloped these sides in round one (Roosters and Rabbitohs) now sit below them on the ladder. I remember a time when people in North Queensland would cheer for the Broncos in these fixtures - essentially the locals wanted a Queensland side competing in the finals and they didn't want the Cowboys taking two points away from a team that would be there. So much has changed. Right now, the Cowboys are the favourites to win the premiership while the Broncos are favourites to win the minor premiership. Could we have our first all-Queensland grand final? Anyhoo...let's worry about this game for now. The Cowboys bench looks a little light but the Broncos are without McGuire and Ofahengaue so that evens out a little. No doubt Ben Hannant and Jake Granville will lift against their former club. I'm expecting a close game and with that in mind I'll stick with the home team - they're likely to win the penalty count at home and the right boot of Jonathan Thurston is a little more reliable than the right boots of Parker and Hunt. Thurston with the field goal....and he's got it!
Verdict – Cowboys by 1
Result - Cowboys 31 defeated Broncos 20
Parramatta Eels vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Pirtek Stadium
Chris Sandow may or may not have crashed a car last weekend, but it's nothing like the car wreck that is the Parramatta Board. Sandow has been punted to NSW Cup to work on his game - hopefully someone can give him a lift. I believe there's a board meeting at the Eels this week. They call the cops when the Eels have a board meeting...I'm not kidding. There'll be plenty of threats of arrest and talk about how the club is heading in the right direction on and off the paddock. I'm not sure how much attention the players will pay to such discussions, but for some crazy crazy reason I've convinced myself the Eels can win this game. Both sides should be suited by daytime conditions so prepare your eyes for a visual feast. The Warriors barely got home last weekend against the Sharks and they don't win back-to-back games in Sydney very often. The home side by just enough...and I genuinely wish Chris Sandow well - when he's in good spirits and playing well he is a joy to watch.
Verdict – Eels by 2
Result - Warriors 17 defeated Eels 13
Gold Coast Titans vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – CBUS Super Stadium
Last weekend I mentioned two of my golden rules. I ignored both of them and got both games wrong...that'll teach me (I hope). The Titans return home which they'll appreciate after a weekend in Canberra they'd rather forget. Note the talk that the Titans may be relocating some of their home games to Central Queensland - with a local zillionaire keen to throw some much-needed schamoolah at the franchise. This effectively makes them FIFO workers - like 80% of the Queensland workforce...it can't hurt their fan base.
Verdict – Titans by 2
Result - Sharks 23 defeated Titans 22
Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday night – AAMI Park
Josh Reynolds returns for the Dogs...Adam Reynolds returns to the casualty ward for the Rabbitohs. Ouch! The Bunnies got a much-needed win on Monday night but the injury to Reynolds means it's one step forward and one step backward for the defending premiers. The Storm have dragged themselves up to second on the ladder and they'd love to rack up a few more victories before the Origin period of the season kicks in. In a round where there are no easy winners (good luck getting a perfect round this weekend tipsters) the Storm look like the only obvious choice in round ten. Even then, I'm hardly confident. Both coaches graduated from the Craig Bellamy school of coaching, so they know each others game plans pretty well. That could turn this game into a dire battle of tactics. If it is dire, the Storm will grind out a victory. If it isn't, the Storm will absolutely thrash it in.
Verdict – Storm by 7
Result - Storm 16 defeated Rabbitohs 12
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – WIN Stadium
No-one, and I mean no-one, has been the target of more of my barbed comments than Ricky Stuart. I just love having a go at the bloke, and after all these years he hasn't keyed my car or threatened to throw lawyers at me or anything. So for that I will give the little buggar the credit he deserves. I also have to applaud what he has done with his roster. On paper they don't look like much of a football team, but by-jingo by-crikey he's moulded them into a football team. They are punching above their weight but (there's always a but) this weekend they face the other side that is punching above their weight. Come to think of it, Dragons coach Paul MacGregor does look quite a bit like Ricky Stuart...especially if I got Ricky to stand on a milk crate. Raiders playmaker Blake Austin has gone from 'who the bl00dy hell is Blake Austin' to 'likely utility for the New South Wales Blues. No-one, and I mean no-one, saw that coming. In the last three rounds the Raiders have scored 116 points - while the Dragons have conceded less than that all season. A performing attack takes on a performing defence. Traditionally defence wins games of football and I am a traditionalist at heart. Call me old-fashioned if you must, but I've enjoyed watching the Dragons suck the life out of opposition attacking raids this season. I also don't believe people should have the right to marry their kitchen appliances. Traditional football. Traditional values...and yay for Sunday afternoons at the footer. Yay!
Verdict – Dragons by 4
Result - Dragons 32 defeated Raiders 18
Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium
No changes to either side this weekend. Mind you, there could be dozens of changes between now and Sunday, as the naming of team line-ups has become an exercise in creative book-keeping in recent times. Both teams were soundly beaten last weekend but I thought the Knights were better than the final result implies. Twice they crossed the stripe early, only to have the on-field decisions over-turned by the video referee. The Knights were undefeated after four rounds this season and they haven't won since. One can hardly tip a side with that sort of negative momentum confidently, but the Knights at home on a Sunday afternoon has been one of my golden rules. Breaking my golden rules last weekend did me no favours whatsoever.
Verdict – Knights by 8
Result - Knights 22 defeated Tigers 12
Manly Sea Eagles vs Penrith Panthers – Monday night – Brookvale Oval
Ever so slowly the pivotal pieces in the Panthers puzzle are returning to the fray, and as each piece returns the Panthers near closer and closer to the side we know they can be. They went desperately close to beating the in-form Broncos last weekend, and I'm gonna throw some cash at them to upset their favoured rivals at their god-awful home paddock. Segeyaro is back, and he gives them zip and momentum in the middle. The Manly forwards will be back-peddling, and the Panthers forwards will just keep on coming all night. That's the plan. That's Cleary's plan. I plan to back the outsiders and I might even back them to win by 13+. Don't forget to gamble responsibly, and don't forget that I'm tipping at less than 50%.
Verdict – Panthers by 2
Result - Panthers 11 defeated Sea Eagles 10
Wally Lewis - round ten selections (in bold)
Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Hi Guys
Hope your all well. I wanted to ask what was your take on that Monday game between Bunnies vs Dragons. I thought the refs really ruined the game and basically handed them the game on a silver platter. Will be great this weekend, when Storm smash Bunnies. I am also liking Roosters 13+, Cowboys and Warriors to all win this weekend.

Isn't it horrible Eugene when post-match analysis needs to include vital ref calls at vital stages. I guess regardless of the result, you would rate both Souths and Saints highly at their best.
Again I easy referees, this isn't WWF. Hulk Hogan doesn't always need to beat the Junkyard Dog. What I would have given to see JD kick Hogan's oversized ass - just once :p

will be interesting to see what happens if alex McKinnon decides to sue storm / nrl over his spinal injuries which have ended his carrier
Submitted by mark ashford on
Hi all
From what I know of Alex Mckinnon suing would not be his idea. I just hope it's not some ambulance chasing lawyer pushing him. The NRL and the Knights have assured Alex he will be cared for for as long as he needs it. This could set a dangerous unwanted precedent and see players with broken legs, arms or finger nails trying to jump on the bandwagon.
It was an unfortunate accident, lets leave this suing for anything crap in the US of A.
The number of games in round 10 that could go either way is astounding, so it's back to the pin and paper for me.

Here are my tips
Bulldogs by 1 yes I am tipping a bit of an upset here and why not they are a good chance of winning here
Cowboys by 2 I think Cowboys are going to beat Broncos in a thiller here
Eels by 4 I think Eels are going to dig in and beat the Warriors here
Titans by 6 I think Titans are going to beat the Sharks here
Storm by 10 No hope for the Rabbitohs here Storm should get them with no Renyolds
Dragons by 8 I think Dragons will end the Raiders run here
Knights by 6 I think Knights will bounce back against the Tigers here
Panthers by 1 I hope this happens so i tip Panthers here

Hi guys, sorry I haven't been tipping, at times I haven't had time to.
So this is my tips for Round 10 (Women's in League Round) hoping to see Dragons in pink V this year and also panthers in pink panthers this year.
Roosters by 7- I'll take the Roosters here because they have a strong side and even though James Graham is back, I just think Roosters will be too good here.
Cowboys by 4- Cowboys to win in an absolute nail-bitter.
Warriors by 10- Parra have been in disappointing form and have no Sandow, Joe Paulo, and another player, I forgot his name. Warriors here even though without Hurrell (suspension)
Titans by 6- Titans to win in which will be a cracking game.
Storm by 14- I'll take the Storm here due to rabbitohs having a bad record against Storm and no Reynolds, but Sutton's playing which will be a boost for Rabbitohs.
The mighty pink V Dragons by 100.. JOKES dragons by 8- Dragons who should be wearing the pink V jersey this week, to beat RAIDERS who have defended well ever since that a quarter of that game against the raiders last time. Dragons too good here.
Tigers by 16- Tigers to get a big win here. Knights have been in terrible form losing 5 in a row and will make it 6 in a row in loses here.
Manly by 22- Manly to absolutely destroy Penrith here.
Good luck to all and cheers!

After five weeks Graham just won't let go of the lead, won't heel, roll over,or play dead while Reynolds with a week to adjust his tackling technique still thinks he's a chance to play Origin, (although most everyone think he's just tripping).
BULLDOGS
Kind of forgotten at this time of year, but Qlders also push for Origin spots too. Duels across the park, and for once Thurston to have an off night, or more to the point, kept very quiet.
BRONCOS
Parra's search to replace Sterlo has been going on for 23years now. I dont think Luke Kelly trying on the magic 7 does anything to call off the search party. Johnson on the other hand is in sparkling form. Watch this everyone, I implore. A 17 year old, 5 years before joining the Warriors. He really is the most talented footballer in the world. Most welcome at Penrith Shaun. Gus, go and have one of your chats.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kSCCWEHfePE
WARRIORS
Legal matters and undoubtedly further implicated players to come is my theory, and starting to wear more heavily on other Titans minds. Namesake Bird from Cronulla to rub sea salt into gaping wounds.
SHARKS
Inglis has been watching his Rocky movies, and Novak Djokovic tapes. The A-Z of how to feign injury, then bounce back off the canvas like he's just stolen Popeye's can of spinach. He's done it before. He'll do it again. With Origin around the corner, Storm's Qld spine will be fractured .. especially when they see the goanna.
RABBITOHS
The hoodoo might be over in Canberra, but it's not over in Sydney and Wollongong. Last home win against Canberra was 2007, and the time before that, 2001. That's one home win in 14 years. Sounds like a hoodoo to me.
RAIDERS
Nothing to suggest that their losing streak won't continue, just that for one of these two duds, it will. May as well be the visitor.
KNIGHTS
The calls will go Manly's way, the crowd as parochial as ever, the video ref will again claim colour- blindness and apologise for pressing the wrong button. All of this, and Penrith will still be too strong. PANTHERS

Hi everyone,
OK, Newbie’s back from his holiday in Thailand and no wiser as to what’s been happening the last 3 weeks. Absolutely no coverage of the Great Game in Chiang Mai and the timing in Kata and Karon (Phuket) was all wrong.
@ Shanghai - the Travel Agent had official confirmation the hotel was booked (Booking Number, “booking confirmed” and “no need to re-confirm” etc) so it seems that Expedia stuffed it up somehow. No biggie, it all worked out in the end. Awesome!
Anyway, checked the results after I got home and I did pretty ordinary I must say. Then again, I see I’m only 4 off the pace so I should be happy with that eh?
Thanks again to the Boss for crunching my tips through. You be Da Man!
As mentioned a few weeks ago, I have no idea of the past form to go on so I’m gonna have to “wing it” this week and hope for the best. OK, let’s get into it…
Roosters - I’m hoping the Boss’ analysis holds true. Roosters for me (obviously).
Broncos - yes I know the Cows are favourites and they’re at home but I notice the Broncos are still on top. Plus the points differential is 35 versus 4. Good enough for me. Broncos to get the bikkies (maybe).
Warriors - methinks it might be Peow! Peow! time Johnny Ray.
Titans - both as bad as each other but Sharks have Cry Baby missing so it has me leaning towards the Titans this week.
Storm - I did see that the Fluffy Ones have JS returning but at home, I reckon the Storm Troopers should scrape in.
Raiders - both of these sides are ticking along nicely aren’t they? Don’t know why but Newbie received a flash of inspiration (not sure if it’s divine or not) and for some strange reason I think I’ll tip Ricky’s mob this week. Flashes of “inspiration” don’t always hold true but what the heck, let’s have a crack anyway. Raiders for me.
Tigers - maybe my roughie for the week? Just think the young fellas are worth having a punt on. Could be a lot closer than some may think. We’ll see what happens Sunday I suppose.
Panthers - I know Manly are favourites and they’re playing at home but I’m gonna tip the Panthers.
@ tigerholic - how did your HOMEMADE BAILEYS IRISH CREAM turn out? Did you manage to whip up a batch? If so, Newbie and Shanghai would love to hear how it turned out.
@ mark ashford - same question brother.
OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.
P.S. Is it considered rude for a deaf person to talk (sign) with their mouth full of food? Hmmm…

Yeah hey everyone ! Sorry I'm late this week with my tips, I've been out surfing with The Joker : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AlusgU-MUZ4 ;-D Yeah ... Lets get on with my picks :
Roosters - Roosters will win this and should win it easy in spite of Bulldogs having there Captain back. Roosters by fourteen points.
Broncos - Close contest against two of the top sides in competition. It's going to be coin toss when it comes picking winner in this game but me if I had to choose I'm on Southern Queensland Bennett Train to crush Cowboys at home this week in tight match up. Broncos by two points.
Warriors - Not that anybody should care but it's my birthday on the weekend and though there are few things I would like, tickets to go see Avengers Age of Ultron movie would be good, or Monster Truck Delorean to go with Back To Future Blu Rays that I just bought, or a couple Rebel Wilson comedy CDs (come to think of it, is Pitch Perfect 2 movie out yet ? I'm so going to be see that too ! ) the one thing that I would really, really, really, like is just to see Warriors win on weekend against Paramatta Eels. I know will be another close match but come on Warriors, just do it ! For me please ? The NZWarriors by six points.
Sharks - Can't see Titans winning this. Cronulla Sharks by six points.
Storm - Can't see Rabbits winning this either. Storm by eight points.
Raiders - This could be the game of round as Ricky Stuart has really started turn Raiders around this season and so has Mary done same thing for Dragons. I'm going with Raiders in this one. Raiders by ten points.
Knights - Home ground advantage has me going with Knights in this one against Tigers. Knights by twelve points.
Sea Eagles - Panthers really need to pick there game up but playing Sea Eagles at home won't be place to do it. As much as I hate Manly more than I hate lightbulb my Uncle once gave me as a birthday gift (Seriously, that's not joke. It was one of those Dick Smith electronic kid sets. He was all like " You see Johnny ? You set wires to battery and battery is what turns the lightbulb on ! Ooo exciting ! Yeah. Yeah. That's excellent Uncle. And this is better than Lego, how exactly ? " )
I'm picking Manly to win here. Manly Sea Eagles by eighteen points.
Awesome. Thanks again Thinker. Thanks again everybody ! Good luck everybody with all your picks and go New Zealand Warriors ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

Johnny Farragher had a scrum implode on him back in 1978 at Penrith Park. He never walked again. Panthers vowed to take care of him financially. If you visit the Leagues Club on any given day, you will still find Johnny in the foyer assisting patrons. He's a credit to himself, the club, and to the game that he still loves.
I think Johnny has the same claim that Alex has, if not more. After all he's endured 37 years of life in a wheelchair, but I think if you gave him $10M he'd probably give it back.
Alex's story is no less tragic, but surely in NRL and other contact sports, you can't claim a dangerous tackle has somehow contravened the Workplace Health and Safety Act. ?

..so I see you must have had a chat Gus, just that you didn't sell it good enough. Dont give up. Talk again.
"The New Zealand Warriors have pulled off a major coup by re-signing star halfback Shaun Johnson until the end of the 2017 season.
Johnson, the Kiwi's No.7 - whose current deal expires at the end of this season - would have been one of the most sought after talents in the NRL heading into 2015. Instead, the Auckland club can base its long-term plans around one of the game's best attacking players.
''For something this big about my future, I wanted it to be handled before the season started,'' Johnson said. ''So that when it comes to the time to play, I can focus solely on that and don't need to worry about anything else. I'm very happy that it's been sorted.''
Early signing: Shaun Johnson is sticking with the Warriors until 2017.

At 23, Johnson is approaching his peak years and this deal will keep him at the club until he's 26.
The Bulldogs and Penrith were both linked to Johnson last season. It was reported that the Panthers were prepared to offer him a $2.2 million three-year deal."

Happy Birthday Johnny Ray and welcome back Newbie. Trust you had a great holiday. I'm hoping to follow on from last weekend.
Roosters - This should be a close game but my tip goes to the Chooks.
Cowboys - Another tough game. Both teams playing well. Home ground swings it for me. Enjoy the game "a' I hope your Cowboys come home for you.
Warriors - I know they are going to win just because it's Johnny Ray's birthday.
Sharks - My roughie for the week. Titans are traditional sliders. Did the slide start last week?
Storm - They need all the points they can get before Origin starts. It should be a good match.
Dragons - I saw the stat mentioned by the Coach but I'm sticking with the Red V.
Knights - Surely they are due a win.
Sea Eagles - Another tough game to pick. Manly need to start putting in some back to back wins if they are to court the top 8 this season.
Here's hoping this round sees no contentious refereeing decisions. Have a good weekend everyone and good luck!!!

Nothing against the Cowboys, but how could Morgan's ball dropping with only fingertips attached effort be awarded a try. That hasn't been a try for years. Jake Granville had another a few weeks ago. Ball dropping with only fingertips attached is no try. What the hell is going on NRL. Penrith and Watene-Zelezniak want an answer.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Ball control is the lost art. Again if that happened in field of play knock on. And also consistency is lacking. If we took the video ref away and took nine's slow mo off them then there would be a lot less dissection of each and every play and hopefully less fan disgust from a single event and more general disappointment when your team lost.

Losing always sits comfortably when my team loses fairly, and winning sits just as uncomfortably when my team gets treated as a Royal, and the opposition as a pauper.

In my humble opinion I reckon they need to completely revise the try scoring put-down rules, it's never going to get better whilst there's still so much subjectivity.
While they're at it they can get rid of the ref calling try or no try. Almost every round a try isn't awarded due to the flaws in this rule. Quote Phil Gould..
"How, the hell, are referees meant to make a call when they haven't seen it the first time!"

Would have been an injustice if Sharks hadn't won. Even a draw would not have been a fair result. Ayshford definitely scored.
I was fearing when (not if) the Titans / Refs Association / NRL conglomerate's conflict of interest would show itself. Showed up in spades during this game. Companies are in business to make money. For the debt ridden Titans that means winning games. The NRL having the Refs association as one of its arms, and in charge of making a profit for the Titans is such a conflict. It really shouldn't be allowed to continue. 15 teams should take this thing to court.
