Melbourne Storm vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – AAMI Park
The Storm have named Jesse Bromwich on an extended bench – he must be a quick healer. I would urge the Broncos forwards to avoid making contact with the bones poking out of his body. Also back, after a slightly longer break from the game, is Billy Slater. He reclaims his number one jersey, Munster moves back into the halves while Riley Jacks and Young Tonumaipea will probably have to wait for another day. In a competition that is so darn unpredictable, I take some comfort from knowing what I'm going to get with the purple machine. Undefeated thus far after two away games in atrocious conditions, they continue on in their relentless pursuit of rugby league perfection. Some may say they are bored by the way they play, but by gee by jingo by crikey it's successful. The Broncos back up from another epic golden point encounter with the Cowboys. They have a short turnaround and one of the hardest road trips in town. I have to single out two Broncos from last week – Ben Hunt showed us how good he can be and Sam Thaiday played the full 87 minutes and looks ten years younger. He must be on the Corey Parker diet. The Storm return home and they don't lose their first home game of the season very often – they do like to remind the people of Melbourne that they have a very good NRL team before the AFL takes over the town like some hideous pandemic. It's the game of the round.
Verdict – Storm by 7
Result – Storm 14 defeated Broncos 12
Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors – Friday night – Forsyth Barr Stadium
Note the locations tipsters – this is the home game the Bulldogs take to New Zealand so they can come fly home with a briefcase full of crisp non-sequential fifty dollar notes. They often get the two points too, despite the travel. For those of you that aren't Super Rugby fans (and there are many of us), Forsyth Barr is the home of the Highlanders in Dunedin. It's an interesting stadium, and that's a good thing too because it usually plays host to Super Rugby matches (take note that I'm planning to have a dig at every other sport on the planet this week...two down). For reasons unknown the Bulldogs are rank outsiders on Friday night. They have lost Hopoate and Holland with injuries but they bring a big and willing forward pack, a pair of halves that have to prove themselves and enough Morris brothers to fill a......Mini Morris. The fullback for the Dogs, Brad Abbey, is a former Warrior who sought a release from them when they signed Tuivasa-Sheck. He'll be keen to prove himself. Marcelo Montoya gets a start on the wing. It's a name that wouldn't be out of place on Channel V or Rage but in reality he's a promising young Fijian and a great finisher. If there's one thing this game can do it's unearth a promising Fijian winger. Good luck son. The Warriors just beat the Knights and never looked likely against the Storm. Granted this game is in New Zealand, but the Warriors have a pretty ordinary record when they head out on tour in their native land. The Dogs competed in a high quality game in round two and I'm tipping an upset. $2.70 looks generous to me if such things interest you.
Verdict – Bulldogs by 4
Result – Bulldogs 24 defeated Warriors 12
Gold Coast Titans vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – Cbus Super Stadium
When Channel Nine claimed this for their Friday night timeslot they were banking on Jarryd Hayne taking on his old club – but it's not to be. To make matters worse Corey Norman is out with a hamstring issue. Jeff Robson steps into the halves in lieu of Norman, and while he doesn't have the speed or the brilliance (or the looks according to Ms Thinker), he does bring a steady hand and a wise old (unattractive) head. Providing he can give his backs enough opportunities there's enough finishing power out wide for the Eels to get the job done. The Titans won't relent easily – that loss to the Knights would hurt even though circumstances were against them on the day. They'll try, but they'll fall short.
Verdict – Eels by 8
Result – Titans 26 defeated Eels 14
Newcastle Knights vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium
Well blow me down with a feather – the Knights have won their first game in 300 and something days. Good for them I say, and may they celebrate like it's 2001. Clearly they are getting better but the stars did align for them in round two – round three may be more of a horrorscope. The Bunnies proved they could still compete in a post-Inglis world and they're unlikely to take their opponent lightly.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 16
Result – Rabbitohs 24 defeated Knights 18
Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium
If Channel Nine could swap their Friday night game I suspect they'd ask for this one. The Panthers bounced back in the best way possible with a demolition job on the other cats while the Roosters are undefeated after two solid performances. I'm leaning to the Panthers in their first home game of the season – given I've tipped them to win the premiership this season I naturally think they have a little more upside in them than the tricolours. The absence of Blake Ferguson gives me a little more confidence too – that does take some of the firepower out of that backline. Take note also that the Panthers have named Hiku and Zelezniak on their extended bench. The weather in Sydney is a little bleak of late and that may take some of the shine off this contest – in any case this is one of the must see contests this weekend.
Verdict – Panthers by 2
Result – Roosters 14 defeated Panthers 12
North Queensland Cowboys vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
The Cowboys are without Matt Scott, Jason Taumalolo, Lachlan Coote and Antonio Winterstein on Saturday night – yet they remain a $1.25 favourite to beat the Sea Eagles. That's hardly a ringing endorsement for the Sea Eagles. I accept they were pretty awful against the Bunnies, but their narrow loss to the Eels in round one had merit. If I could add Martin Taupau to the Sea Eagles pack I'd be tipping them. I still think they can win, and I will disclaim that I have backed them with 11.5 points start at $1.91 (gamble responsibly), but the Cowboys have players in their deck who just know how to win. They're on track for 26 consecutive golden point victories this season and it wouldn't surprise me if this went beyond 80 minutes also. The Cowboys...but only just.
Verdict – Cowboys by 1
Result – Sea Eagles 30 defeated Cowboys 8
Canberra Raiders vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium
Hey Dave Taylor is a big man. Never one to be late. Explains complex ideas in his brain.
He just wanders around, unaffected by, the winter winds, yeah. He'll pretend that, he's somewhere else, so far and clear, about two thousand miles from here.
Canberra coach Ricky Stuart was disappointed with the Raiders poor choices, silly errors and poor handling last weekend, and he's addressed that by bringing big Dave Taylor into the seventeen. Sheesus McSneezuz, I think Ricky has finally lost his gourd. Despite this rather baffling selection, I expect the Raiders will regroup and give their fans at home a better performance this week. That said, the Tigers at $2.94 for this game seems an over-reaction. Was their loss to the Panthers poorer than the Raiders loss to the Sharks? Anyhoo, I'm here to tip a winner and it's the green machine to bounce back at home. Total points overs folks...these two sides will rack up about 70 points in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
Verdict – Raiders by 4
Result – Raiders 46 defeated Tigers 6
Cronulla Sharks vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium
As far as local derbies go this is one of the biggies. I don't want to say these sides hate each other, but they definitely don't send each other Christmas cards. To borrow a phrase from the great Steve Roach – forwards determine who wins the game and the backs determine by how much. This forwards battle looks delicious, and I'm giving the Sharks a very slight edge because they'll have a big home crowd pushing them on. While the Dragons attack is showing signs of life, the Sharks are racking up 42 points against the Raiders. They may even give Valentine Holmes a run on Sunday. Worth watching.
Verdict – Sharks by 10
Result – Dragons 16 defeated Sharks 10

Qlders are claiming Bevan French as their own.
He is from Tingha, NSW.
Last time the bloody cencus worked 6 years ago (pre technology), they said there was 1174 in the town, although probably a fair few more because as we all know, they only send you a cencus form if you live in a house. Homeless don't get counted.
Anyway, this little place that has produced Nathan Blacklock and Preston Campbell, has Copes Creek run through it, is part of the Murray-Darling River system.
Qlders are suggesting there's something in the water, and that because the Darling runs through part of Southern Qld, that there's a connection.
Sounds plausible until you find that the Darling River's source is also in NSW.
Bad luck Qld.

Honestly, they would claim that W.A is part of QLD if it suited their needs. Bevan needs to understand that the time of NSW has come and he is either with us or against us. But getting in early here, Fix the stupid eligibility ruling and bring back the ORIGIN part of SoO.

Coach I cant say anymore after the post above me.
You say "bragging rights" but I think it's bullying rights.
Its bullying and belittling of other posters here.
Were you bullied at school Coach?
Perhaps you were a fat little kid at school, got bullied and that's why you are on the couch.
Your biggest cry is Englis and now he's out.
Did you NSW tragics not have a replacement for him in the team?
What is going to be your excuse this year?
Yes Englis & Scott are gone but QLD has Napa and many others.
So far the Broncs have beaten the Premiers at their home and lost to the Cows by another golden point.
Whereas your Panthers have been flogged at home but then had a win away. SO who has the bragging rights.
Why don't you stop being such a pain?
Submitted by Coach Potato on
What a racist friggin pig to insinuate that coming from an ethnic background automaticly makes you ineligible for State or Country.
Elias, Fenech, McManus, they all came to Australia as small children.
How do you go around with a big cheesy grin. Racist pig.
Submitted by mark ashford on
Ah Coach
It's so easy to use the 'racist" call.
I now think I know who you are.
Are you an Australian person or perhaps a newcomer who doesn't understand our culture.
You demand the tipsters to name club, etc but who are you Coach?
Why call the racist thing...name your origin?
Submitted by mark ashford on
Coach you must be ashamed of your last post.
I didn't think you were that low.
I love the indigenous players and anyone who comes from the Pacific Islands, PNG and anywhere else.
As a western NSW supporter you should support all ethnics no matter what.

Coach and Rocket
This is a tipping site where we all try to win with our tips.
If we think our team cant win then we are surely free to tip the other team to win.
It's not a loyalty site just a "lets win" site.
So how about we stop flogging tipsters like "tiger holic" who doesn't always tip his team.
He may just be in front at the end.
Lets just all have fun as we go ahead.
That's what Thinker set this up for.

Thank you for the reminder who came from where.
Coach is a bit of a fool but he loves NSW and can't help himself.
Gotta love his passion, even though it's a bit bent.
QLD will win 2017 easy...3 nil.
Submitted by The Thinker on
Coach,
There is nothing racist about what GuySmiley said. He's just pointing out that a number of players that have represented NSW 'origin'ated somewhere else.
And when McManus did move to Australia he lived and played rugby league in the Northern Territory until he was old enough to vote.
The whole 'who should and shouldn't play for which state' is just tiring isn't it? I'm certainly tired of it.

Evening All
I can stop all of the bitching, complaining and throwing of nasty little barbs, it doesn't matter who or where a player who plays for NSW comes from, he automatically becomes legend in my book.
Queensland had a fantastic gut wrenching, soul destroying, lets leave QLD now, over the top bragging rights for 9 years winning run, 2017 is the year that the NSW Blues step up, NSW will win the series 2-1.
Coach, got to stay away from that word "racist", Mark is correct, we need to stick to out tipping and with that comes some bragging, or hat in the hand or tail between the legs for you coach.
Round 2 is way too early to right anyone or any team off. Have a good week!

I mean what I say, and I say what I mean.
Some fly-in basically saying how could Elias be classed as a true New South Welshman, he was born in Lebanon.. The most fundamentally racist thing I've ever heard in the context of rugby league, until it was then outdone by those who came to the defence.
I champion equality and fairness for all.
You choose to tire.
Please don't choose for me to.

Erm no Coach. You're wrong.
You mentioned Tingha is not in Queensland, and you have regularly mentioned that Kempsey is not in Queensland.
All Guy has done is list 17 players who played for NSW who were born in places that are not in NSW.
That's it. It's not racism. It's a geography lesson.

Yeah a is right guys ! What is with all this arguing and infighting when we're just been given some of best news ever this week ? North Sydney Bears are back ! That according to latest news The NRL are all but willing to sell Gold Coast Titans license to club in lieu of $7 million dollars plus other minor party guarantees. Don't know what they could be but still who cares ? Bring back Bears ! Only instead of calling themselves Gold Coast Bears, I think that personally they should drop any reference they have to Gold Coast and just rename themselves North Beaches Bears due to amount of times Gold Coast has failed to support a club. To me, their literally NRL answer to Dad that's never turned up for his son's Little League practice. Honestly even if the Bears deal doesn't go through, whoever does ends up owing the club instead of calling them Gold Coast Titans they should just call them "Sorry Timmy I was late, I was seeing your new Mommy at the strip bar near Airport. You would like her. She has drawing of a dragon bursting into flames tattooed on her lower back ... " Titans. Yeah ... let's get on with this week picks. Good luck everybody ...

Sorry Thinker, you are wrong because you know full well that Origin eligibility is not based purely on birthplace.
Your use of Inglis to demonstrate is absolutely perfect because he is the one who passes absolutely zero criteria to play for QLD.
Whereas noone on SmileyFace's list failed the criteria test to play for NSW?
Prosecution rests.
Case closed.

Hello all, I've been around a fair while, been following footy since the 60's. In the days gone by, true loyalty to a club, state started in the heart. Mate, if someone originated in NSW and wanted to play for QLD or vice versa then, I've never had a problem with it. On a local scale, would you really want someone playing for you that didn't want to be there, nah, we let them move on, everyone's happy. I played local country footy from a small country town of 1800 folk. I got an opportunity to move on higher playing in the Western region for Mudgee. That didn't make me a traitor to my home town, it is what it is. My view is home is where the heart is for the player. If the rules change over eligibility over the years makes no difference, they are only a guide. If a player wants to play for a particular state let him, his heart won't be in it if he is forced otherwise. Cheers from Mr Awesome, sorry for phone typo's.

Hello All,
Here is something that maybe interesting for some.
http://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/origin/queensland-twice-as-dependent-on...
Personally, my view is that if you don’t want to play for a particular state, then don’t. If you are eligible to play for another state and want to, so be it. I would only want those in my team that are 100% committed anyway. In addition, the question about eligibility would probably be a non-issue if NSW were winning or breaking even. The eligibility rules were created because QLD always had smaller pool to dip into up. The fact that QLD are riding a gravy train with biscuit wheels is irrelevant, every team is beatable. It reminds me very much of the Ford vs Holden parity issue in the V8 supercars at its height, wasn't that a pain. It all got sorted in the end, and most of it by just buckling down through hard work and improving yourself to match the current yardstick.
As Coco Chanel said, don’t spend time beating on a wall hoping to transform it into a door.
P.S. Go NSW this year, sometimes to win you need to step out of the box, go back to the past for ideas and then re-innovate.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Read between the lines people.
Or should I say read between the tips.
The one who shall not be named (because he has already told us) , who made the hoo-ha about getting off Tigerholic's back for tipping against the Tigers. Well let's just say, this wasn't about Tiger at all.
It was about ... that person that shall not be named (because he has already told us). It's about him. For he is the mighty Bronco fan who has tipped the Storm to blow past tomorrow night.
He wants it out there, that if Broncos play like busted's , that he won't cop it.
You will cop it, that person (blah. blah.. you know)... and what's more you will cop it sweet.
If you win. You can give it all you've got.
If you lose, whether you tipped correctly or not. You will cop it. For it is beyond reasonable how the phrase "Mark my words" came about.

Thinker, if I took just one last peak inside that racial cold case before slamming shut, I would have cause to find it mighty curious this was upon good advice, a geography lesson, yet it was only caucasians who get dignified with an actual town or city or birth, even London, and Auckland get mentions. Just that when it came to people from a country where a different language was spoken, bit of colour in their skin, those players just got a country plonked on their head.
I'm not Lebanese or Maltese but I hope any viewers from these backgrounds didn't feel any less Australian for reading the original list + one author's borderline tones afterwards. They sure had a right to be though. It is of course their right to feel how they feel, is it not?

Interesting issue involving the NRLitans for this weekends game. Seems they are trying to bend/avoid the lock out rule on team list have to be the final 21 by 6 pm Tuesday night. Copley is trying to be smuggled in to face off against the BOYS. Now not worried about his presence for the game itself, am very worried about the precedent set for the rest of the year especially since the NRL runs the NRLitans. Lets watch this space with interest.
