Round eight selections

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Wests Tigers - Friday night – ANZ Stadium

It's fair to assume that conditions underfoot will be difficult on Friday night. Under those circumstances you want a pack full of hard-nosed big boppers weathered by years of NRL exposure. You want guys that can tuck the ball under the arm and work their way up the middle of the paddock. You want ball security. That sounds like the Bulldogs pack to me, with or without their captain - Tolman and Eastwood come to mind. The Tigers have some big cattle coming through their system, but they are light on for experience - especially with Keith Galloway out of action.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Tigers 38 defeated Bulldogs 14

New Zealand Warriors vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday lunchtime – Mt Smart Stadium

The Kiwis often put it all together for this round. No doubt they like to remind us that 40% of the ANZAC acronym belongs to them, but it's also a good time to put their hands up in front of the national selectors. Sam Rapira is back and I always think the Warriors are a better team when he's there. Dave Taylor is out for the Titans and you can't replace his size unless you have an elephant on your roster. That said, Nate Myles is the bellweather for the Titans - if he plays the Titans can win. Early indications are that he won't get there. The first of a string of ANZAC Day games this round - it will be interesting to see how the Kiwis mark the occasion.

Verdict – Warriors by 4

Result - Titans 32 defeated Warriors 28

Newcastle Knights vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

There's a lot of football on Saturday, but this game could end up being the best of a very good bunch. The Cowboys are speaking of revenge, but why talk about it? Now the Knights know what's coming. The Knights see themselves as a community team, and they will rally given what we've seen from mother nature in the Hunter region this week. I'm compelled to tip them, even though the Cowboys have been playing better footy. The Cowboys are warm favourites and I expect the weight of money will come for them - if I can find $2.60 for the Knights I'm prepared to ask Ms Thinker for a loan and stick her money where my mouth is. Gamble responsibly...and thank your partner while you're at it.

Verdict – Knights by 2

Result - Cowboys 26 defeated Knights 24

Sydney Roosters vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

If the Knights/Cowboys game doesn't deliver (and I think it will) then the 4pm game almost certainly will. This is your 'traditional' ANZAC clash and these sides turn up to play it. That both sides are in good form just adds to the anticipation. The Dragons have a defensive line that simply doesn't quit and they'll head into Saturday full of confidence and self-belief. The Roosters have lost two in a row but those two games were, I think, the two highest quality games we've seen this season. The injury to Waerea-Hargreaves has swung me here. Sam Moa returns but the Dragons pack has a slight edge (and I'll admit it, at the start of this season I didn't think I would ever say that the Dragons pack had an edge over anyone). The bookies don't give the Dragons much hope at all but I think that water-tight defense can frustrate their opponents out of the game. Back the 'total score unders' - it's been quite the money-spinner in Dragons games this season and I can't see any reason to stop backing it yet.

Verdict – Dragons by 2

Result - Dragons 14 defeated Roosters 12

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – AAMI Park

First plays last. Oddly enough, the only game the Sea Eagles have won this year...they beat the Storm. I thought the Storm were pretty unlucky to lose that game but they won't be letting luck determine the outcome on Saturday night. Keiran Foran comes back, but Jamie Lyon comes back out - the Sea Eagles seem to have run out of luck altogether. All those Kiwis in the Storm forward pack will be keen to make a statement this weekend. I have an image in my head of a final score of Storm 32 - Sea Eagles 4. Let's see if I'm close.

Verdict – Storm by 28

Result - Sea Eagles 12 defeated Storm 10

Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

It's rare to see one player lose a game of football for a team, but one player went very close to achieving just that when the Broncos went down narrowly to the Dragons last weekend. I try to focus on the positives rather than the negatives, so I won't name and shame him here. With the injury to Justin Hodges he gets a chance to atone, and I hope he does. I keep thinking this is a danger game for the Broncos, but my uncanny record of getting the Broncos results wrong is hanging over my head. I've got them right just once this season - when they beat the Warriors by 8 points (and I even got the margin right). I'll tip that margin again. That Broncos pack looks too good to me and I think they'll win on the back of that platform. Keep an eye on Josh McGuire in this game - he's likely to be best on ground.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result - Broncos 28 defeated Eels 16

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

Paul Gallen is back this weekend, not that he was needed on Monday night. The Sharks haven't lost a game for three weeks, and in that time they've beaten two of the heavyweights in the Rabbits and the Roosters. During the same period the only team the Panthers have beaten are the Sea Eagles. To get a gauge on how far the Panthers have fallen have a look at their game against the Titans last week. Just a few weeks earlier the Panthers beat the Titans 40-0. For reasons that baffle me the bookmakers can't split these sides, but I can. The Sharks won't win by much, but they'll win.

Verdict – Sharks by 6

Result - Panthers 26 defeated Sharks 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs  vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Barlow Park

Barlow Park is in Cairns for those that are curious, and the Rabbitohs will appreciate the change of scenery given they spent much of their round seven loss underwater. Clearly the Bunnies are missing Adam Reynolds and his kicking game but what remains of that very talented backline should enjoy the drier and warmer conditions in what is a rare daytime game in North Queensland. The Bunnies have won just one game in their last four outings...and that was by a single point in a very controversial game. They're better than that. Surely they're better than that.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result - Raiders 30 defeated Rabbitohs 22

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,
The NRL and the Australian War Memorial have signed a four year collaborative agreement to ensure that the NRL honours the ANZAC Centenary celebrations appropriately.

A number of vignettes will be shown before the games this round as part of the ANZAC commemoration this season. I have been lucky enough to see three of them. They are outstanding...congratulations to all involved.

The files are a little large for me to embed them on this site. If you can't wait until game time, here's a link for you to download the vignette for the Warriors/Titans game:
https://files.rugbyleaguecentral.com.au/edjr1

As fans of the game we are often overly (and at times unfairly) critical of the NRL. They love the game as much as we do, and they've got this right.

I'd like to share some poetry.

An English poet Robert Binyon, just over 100 years since this one was first published. A few verses in, you will see the relevance.

For the Fallen by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), published in The Times newspaper on 21st September 1914.

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

.... Verse 4 has come to symbolise ANZAC and remembrance day in Australia, yet I'm not sure how much acknowledgement, if any, Rob Binyon receives for his words of wisdom. I really would hate to think plagiarism is what the lack of credit comes down to. Anyway, for what it's worth, I say thanks Mr Binyon.

Looks like a very brief summary round. I'll be quick and to the point.

Bulldogs - History is with them, and more so at home.

Warriors - Same as above, we'll see if the Titans are the real deal and can win over in N.Z.

Cowboys - A bit of a spite might creep into this game but the Cowboys are a fraction hotter this weekend.

Roosters - Hard call, but they are due at some point, why not this weekend

Storm - A few players back for Manly makes this a tough game for the Storm to win, but home ground and possibly an under done Foran, hard to go against

Eels - Last time I saw them at Suncorp we got a win and hopefully that trend continues.

Sharks - If you can win against the premiers in a cyclone you should be able to knock off the Panthers with a list of injuries

Rabbits - Hmmmmm the Raiders have a 9 wins to 8 advantage over the Rabbits but thinking that after Sunday it will be all square at 9 a piece.

Hope everyone has a safe ANZAC day and if your going to the dawn service or any other around the country may we always remember what has been laid down so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have.

Lest we forget.

Hey Coach thanks for the 'Lest we forget" info, I had no idea where that came from just thought it must have been something the RSL came up with.
Good effort mate.
I would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and reflective Anzac day.

Coach Potato's picture

No worries Mark. It's not a big deal and dont want people to lose focus, but it's at least curious that 99.99% of the population have been led to believe the same as you.

I saw a footy jersey-wearer today. It's only Thursday. His team not playing for two more days. Was he going to wash it in-between? I doubted as much.

But straight away I thought, a footy jersey-wearer. On ANZAC day, this guy will be proudly wearing his teams colours. Fans from a massive 10 NRL teams get to proudly hold hand against heart for both country and team. So good for so many fans.

All these footy jersey-wearers out and about, and I won't be able to join in, else likely get asked if I got the day wrong.

NRL, I hope my expectation of next year's match schedule is the same as yours.

Is Birdboy a mystery? I see he or she, got to assume guy...is leading comp but I haven't seen his tips EVER....this could be rigged.. Time to get the NRL integrity unit in to sort this mystery out!

The Thinker's picture

Thanks Declan,
I've amended your selections as per your comments.

Rodney,
Birdboy is real (probably a guy or it would be Birdgirl).

Everyone,
A few notable line-up changes coming through. Paul Gallen is out again with his purple thigh. Justin Hodges is back for the Broncos - Vidot is out (which makes my preview of the Broncos/Eels game look a bit silly).

christine 's picture

Rodney there is also nik you don't see tips for him or her either, I smell a conspiracy

The Thinker's picture

Christine,
Not everyone adds comments in the comments section. Thousands of people are reading this each week, and 99% of them don't add comments.

Some of our tipsters are just filling out the tipping form each week - which is all they have to do.

There's no conspiracy.

christine 's picture

Thinker I was only joking it is okay all is good

a's picture

Yes it is all good

christine 's picture

a I hope raiders don't beat souths this one makes me a bit worried

The Thinker's picture

Afternoon again,

I've closed the tipping comp for the round. Nik hasn't put in selections yet but if he/she can add them in the comments before the first game I will push them through.

I think we can safely assume the Guru is out for this season with a torn pec or something. If you are out there Craig I hope all is well in your world.

Have a great weekend everyone.
We will remember them.

Thanks Nik....I'll push them through for you.

Good luck

Thinker's little helper can we have the tweet feed back again please ?

Coach Potato's picture

If I was framing a market, I would have had that game much closer. I would say Sydney $1.80 St George $1.95. With the maximum Bet, means there's only $25 extra risk taken for the $50 punter. Makes it sound like William is doing it a bit tough.

a's picture

Cowboys will win tomrrow but

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
I think the Dragons are a huge chance - and you can get $2.95/$3.00 if you like them.

Roosters are about $1.40/$1.45 with most...so $2.00 is fair overs if you like the Chooks.

Rodney's picture

Thinker,

How can I cheat in my comp if I can't see Birdboy tips for the week? :)

Coach Potato's picture

Rodney, underneath the thinkers tips each week are all the "guest tipsters submissions for the week" click on whoever you like and their tips are there. Some dont chat much which is their choice, but if you also want to leave it til late Friday to tip, that's also each to their own

The Thinker's picture

Rodney,
What Coach said.
All the best...and good luck in your comp
The Thinker

Coach Potato's picture

Yes Thinker the Dragons are overs, but I won't be taking them. I have Sydney winning, just that $2 still isn't enough sway to part with any of mine.

Why only 50c per dollar to maximum of $50? Do these bookies want to promote people to gamble or not? I hate this nanny state stuff. Hardly should be up to the bookie to administer responsible gambling.

Johnny Ray's picture

Anybody reading this is at tonights game, can you please throw a couple of bottles at Bulldogs supporters who won't shut up during the Last Post ceremony ? Lest We Forget :-(

Baggy_Gee's picture

Now that deserves a life ban as well as pelting the ref's with bottles.

Coach Potato's picture

Yep, JR. Wasn't a good start. There's always young and less experienced spectators who dont know the ritual. Might be a couple of grand per venue well spent to put a flyer on each seat to help explain eg bugle .. minutes silence .. more bugle .. little bit more silence.

Else yes, bunch of yobbo knobs. Embarrassment to themselves and country

Coach Potato's picture

That's it. George Costanza. You're doing my tips from now on.
