Round eighteen selections

Canberra Raiders vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – GIO Stadium

Appearances for the Raiders on Friday nights are rare, so they'll be super-keen to show us what they've got. Let's hope they don't make a meal of it. It's difficult to tip either of these sides with any confidence, but the location and timeslot sways me to the home side. It will be about 4 degrees when they kick-off and when they come out for the second half it will be near enough to zero. Under those conditions, I think the Raiders will be looking for the two points while the Knights will be looking for a fireplace and a Hunter Valley red. Hopefully Jarrod Croker has been working on his defence - he's a quality player but he knows how to miss a tackle from time to time. Assuming Gagai backs up from Origin I expect the Knights will give him plenty of chances. Back him in those try scoring market thingies if you are into such things.

Verdict – Raiders by 4

Result - Raiders 36 defeated Knights 22

Penrith Panthers vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium

It hasn't been a great week for Phil 'what a dismal night this is....oh, unless you're a Queenslander' Gould or Coach Potato and it doesn't get any easier on the weekend. The Panthers have done well in recent weeks but they are still missing some key men in key positions. Assuming the Roosters Origin reps back up they're bringing their best seventeen. The Chooks are looking for four wins in a row and they are one team that look like they are gaining momentum as we approach the business end of proceedings. I can't back the Roosters at $1.45, particularly when you get the same price about the Panthers with 12.5 points start. I'm on the Chooks to scrape home - that should make it all the more painful for Gus and Coach.

Verdict – Roosters by 2

Result - Roosters 24 defeated Panthers 4

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Brisbane Broncos – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

The last two times I was super keen on an outsider I was wrong. Very wrong. Because of that, I'm trying to hold my nerve a little. What I say next I say with cautious optimism - The Broncos at $2.50 looks tasty. They haven't put a foot wrong through this Origin period. They've kept winning, and they've kept winning away from home. This time they're facing the Bulldogs, and the Dogs have five of their own Origin players backing up. Hodges gets a rest this weekend as you would expect, but it looks like the remainder of the QLD contingent will be there. Note that all the Broncos backing up from Wednesday are backing up from a series win. For the Bulldogs...its the opposite. It hurts less when you win.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result - Broncos 16 defeated Bulldogs 8

Audkland Warriors vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Sixth plays seventh and the loser risks falling away from the leading teams in the top four. The Warriors last two victories have been most impressive, while the Storm have lost three in a row. In any case, this is a step-up in grade for the Warriors and will give us a better guide to their prospects. Storm coach Bellamy has had plenty of experience managing his troops through the Origin period, and he has two of his big three on board for the run into the finals. That said, I'm swaying to the Warriors, as those youngsters in the Storm backline will find those enormous Warriors bodies hard to contain.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result - Warriors 28 defeated Storm 14

Cronulla Sharks vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Sunday afternoon – Remondis Stadium

Did Paul Gallen play his last Origin game last night? What a way to go out. A big question mark has to hang over him backing up on Sunday, given the state of his body these days. Mind you, Josh Dugan had his fair share of knocks and is a possible late exclusion too. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for changes. For mine the Sharks are better placed without Gallen than the Dragons are without Dugan. It's all speculation of course until we know more. The folks in the Shire will pack the joint for the local grudge match, and they'll go a long way toward lifting the local lads over the line. In round 12 the Dragons absolutely walloped the Sharks (42-6), but the Dragons have lost their last four and the warning bells are starting to ring. Note that all four losses were by narrow margins, but the Sharks can grind out a narrow win on their home ground better than most. Not remotely confident.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sharks 28 defeated Dragons 8

Gold Coast Titans vs Manly Sea Eagles – Monday night – Cbus Super Stadium

I'm not sure what sort of crowd will turn up on a Monday night on the Gold Coast, but 90% of them will be there to vent their frustrations at Daly Hyphen-Evans. Meanwhile, Nate Myles gets to rub shoulders with his future team-mates. No-one can ever accuse the Titans of not turning up, but the injury toll is high and it's hard to know the effects of the looming court cases. Manly are two or three forwards short of a great football team, but a win here goes a long way toward ensuring they avoid a wooden spoon. I expect we'll see quite a few good footy games this weekend, but I don't expect this to be one of them.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Sea Eagles 38 defeated Titans 6

Wally Lewis - round eighteen selections (in bold)

I can understand Thinker's "thinking". He doesn't ever want his impartial comments to be seen as prejudiced by his support for one club.

Although by offering to be true to everyone else, he fails to be true to himself.

Why not be true to yourself as a rugby league fan Thinker.

It's a horrible advantage (looking through NSW eyes) for Queensland to have teams 1 and 2. Home final week 1, and I get the eery feeling that NRL bigwigs will buckle to allow unprecedented home Preliminary finals (totally unfair for teams like Canberra, Newcastle, NZ, Melbourne who would not get similar treatment in the same situation) and who knows? a Grand Final at the neutral CBus stadium.

Remember Port Adelaide and Brisbane both travelled to the MCG.
Swans and West Coast, also happy to travel to the MCG. Respect for the traditional home of the Grand Final is never questioned in AFL. The AFL has never not had a daytime GF and I applaud them for sticking true. NRL on the other hand, is all about constant rule changes by people who have no respect for the history of the game.

Coach Potato's picture

On dear. Home preliminary finals for non-Sydney teams are not unprecedented.

Storm hosted the prelim against the Warriors in 2011.

Manly and Penrith couldnt get a single home final between them finishing 2nd and 4th last year. So on the nose this game sometimes

christine 's picture

as well as getting guru craig back on the tipping ladder where is the joker ?

Coach Potato's picture

No please don't come back Guru and Joker. I happy that it looks like I'm not coming last.

Cowboys vs Broncos grand final this year

Coach Potato's picture

Who knows if Canberra and NZ finish 5th and 6th the year.

Just wondering if there's a scenario that not a single final gets played in Sydney all September.

Brookvale snubbed last year weeks 1 and 2. Penrith Stadium snubbed preliminary final week. The way its looking, what argument does the NRL take now? Townsville capacity is only 30k max. and Suncorp only 50k.

My argument is not against Queensland having their finals. My argument is why should the smaller Sydney team have their finals taken away? It's just not fair. Panthers had a right to a home prelim last year. Whether they reverse the result is anyone's guess but they deserved to have the opportunity. These kinds of games don't come around that often you know.

Coach Potato's picture

Wests, Parramatta, Manly, Penrith, Cronulla, and to a lesser extent St George have the ability to lose home ground advantage in September. The other 10 teams do not.

Even crueller was displayed last year, Manly playing two away finals to Souths and Bulldogs when they were the home team, and Panthers playing an away prelim against the Bulldogs as the home team.

Both teams contesting the Grand Final, Souths and Bulldogs, got there as a result of playing away finals at home.

If I was part of this year's annual conference, I would be proposing a motion to boycott next year's semis unless the 6 smaller teams retain home ground advantage through to the Grand Final, just like the other 10. Who cares if the NRL loses a bit of revenue from a few games. Don't they make enough squillion over the rest of the season? Who cares that the smaller ground will sell out, and some people not get a ticket. Would you rather your team made it to the G/F or not? If I missed out on a ticket I'd be saying "yee ha, full house. We're gonna be tough to beat now. It's about the team, not about me"

Coach Potato's picture

Ironic that this weeks lead-in statement refer to tradition.

Coach Potato's picture

.. And I suspect The Thinker's team is amongst the 6. Not Penrith. Not the Dragons. Probably not Cronulla or Manly.

Coach Potato's picture

Lots of references to the 80s.

This weeks plea to Johnny Ray, Yazoo's "Dont go" - 1982.

NSWRL Minor Premiers and Premiers - Parramatta.

Team of the 80s - Sterling, Kenny, Ella, Grothe, Price, Cronin.

The Thinker is an EEL.

It would be good if a Sydney team does not win this year

Coach Potato's picture

QLD V NSW Grand Final, like another State of Origin would be good

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
Those six Sydney teams you mentioned don't have to do anywhere near the traveling of the Warriors, Cowboys, Storm, Broncos, Titans, Raiders or Knights throughout the season.

With nine Sydney teams in the comp, that gives the Sydney teams (potentially) eight away games in their home town.

Every away game for the seven non-Sydney teams is a journey.

That said, the Bulldogs, Rabbits and Roosters clearly have an advantage in the finals given their home grounds....and it's no surprise they are the three most powerful teams in Sydney.

Coach Potato's picture

Couple of hours on a nice play a couple of times a fortnight a few days before game day is horriby tough on these millionaire players.

That's just not a very strong argument as to why 6 teams lose out at finals time and 10 teams don't.

Yes three Sydney teams have extra advantage. Is it good enough to just make that observation and for everyone to suck it up? Would repeating myself if I answered.

Coach Potato's picture

*plane not play

The Thinker's picture

Nice planes - Those millionaires at the Storm fly on Tiger.

I hope Jesse Bromwich gets an exit seat.

Coach Potato's picture

Must be almost as bad as a leaky boat off Christmas Island. Those poor guys

Coach Potato's picture

Coach Potato's picture

West Coast Eagles. Much larger players but I guess they have a bus like the Partridge family to get to their games every other week. Whatever it is, I don't hear them complaining.

Baggy_Gee's picture

As I keep putting out there, the NRL needs to be more family friendly and nothing is better for the game than watching your boys run around at your local field. Any final barring the G/F should be a home game, a packed house at Brookevale beach, Lichehart, Pirtek fortress, The Chilli farm (a nice nickname for pepper, cold weather, hot peppers), does more for the confidence of both sides than it does playing in front of a half full ANZ where the silence is deafening. Make the G/F at ANZ, reserve a 1/4 of the seats for team A and a 1/4 for team B members, half go on sale to the general public early. and unsold member seats are the only tickets available on the day. That way you are hopefully guaranteeing about 20,000 of each teams supporters on game day and 40,000 people who want to see the last game of football for the season.

Coach Potato's picture

Don't forget to see the video through to the 2m 30 mark. They sure look like battery hens in there.

a's picture

Let hope it is a Cowboys vs Broncos grand final

The Thinker's picture

Coach,
After 18 rounds this is how often some teams have had to travel:
Cowboys - 8 games
Broncos - 9 games
Storm - 9 games
Warriors - 8 games

Your Panthers have traveled away from Sydney for an away game just 3 times this season:

Broncos (8-5 loss)
Titans (32-6 loss)
Knights (26-14 loss)

Perhaps it's not as easy as you might think.

a's picture

It is not easy at all

Coach Potato's picture

I take your "total travel minutes during the season stat" and appreciate your efficient research but to me its a negligible factor considering we are talking about guys that don't work for a living, whose Mondays and Tuesdays mostly consist of having a dip in a heated pool, a bit of light training plus weights and then off for a relaxing latte. Sorry but I remain perplexed how weekly travel to and from games has anything to do with the right to home ground advantage come semi-finals?

Hypotetically speaking surely Gold Coast would be up in arms if they finished higher than Broncos but had to play a home prelim at Suncorp because it holds more people. That's the exact equivalent of what happened to Penrith last year having to play at ANZ. It stinks, and this year's semis is only set to get smellier.

Coach Potato's picture

Good luck with the perfect round tomorrow Thinker. Let's hope that the arduous joy flight to the Gold Coast doesn't take too much out of Manly for you :p

Good luck to Federer tonight. A true champion. Humble and great. I hope he wins. Watch for Djokovic to pull the shot-duck trick if he's down. Laugh a minute, the ol' Joker.

Guess what? My streak table looks like this:
Broncos 12
Cowboys 11
Roosters 9
Warriors 8

The real table reads
1.Broncos
2.Cowboys
3.Roosters
4.Warriors

Losing streaks scores read
Newcastle 11
Wests 9
Manly 8
Parramatta 8
Canberra 8

The table reads
16. Wests
15. Newcastle
14. Manly
13. Gold Coast
12. Parramatta

What can I say!

a's picture

Yeah good luck Ferder

Baggy_Gee's picture

Nicely done/predicted Coach. Always nice to discover a pattern that proves itself.

a's picture

But still Cowboys will win

Coach Potato's picture

Nothings quite proven yet. There's still a heap of teams that could be in the mix for top 4 and nothing even certain about Broncos and Cowboys finishing 1 and 2 just yet. They are the only two who have reached the magic 10, but a few others could be there soon. Dragons are on 8 and only two straight wins away, but somehow feels like they may not have two straight in them.

Coach Potato's picture

Curious is the Sharks who will hit 8 if they win away in Canberra next week. Never would have thought they were a top 4 chance, but right now they are.

a's picture

Dragons and Storm are struggling at the moment

Coach Potato's picture

..and Souths, and of course my Penrith.

My Panthers are gone. Need to win 5 from 8 but they haven't won 5 from 8 at any stage this year. Love to be wrong but I don't think so.

Not Johnny Ray's picture

Ah what marketing genius decided that a team called "Storm" would be right sports club to associate their airline with ? That's so not what you want to hear on flight ! Probably the same marketing genius that decided to call buildings at airport "Terminals" another word that you don't ever want to hear when associated with air travel ! Dude there are some really dumb people out there ... :-s

Not Johnny Ray's picture

It's like what it is, in New Zealand Woolworth supermarkets are all called Countdown and you're thinking cool Not Johnny Ray, what's problem with that ? The problem is in last six to eighteen months all across the country there has been spate of people going around and taking letter O off word Count from Countdown signs out front so that name instead spells out, well ... you all know what it spells ! Gives new meaning to word when you wife wants you to go down road for her and buy her some tampons ! Good luck with your pick tomorrow Thinker. Hope you get a perfect round ! ;-D

a's picture

Panther have. A tough run

Coach Potato's picture

Tiger at 33/1 is surely worth a 10-er in the British Open starting Thursday. Three rounds in the 60s last week tells me he's hitting straighter. Not to mention the Open is at St Andrews. With all due respect, apart from the pot bunkers, is wide open spaces. He's gonna feel like cutting loose out there.

Coach Potato's picture

Souths need 4 from 8 just to scrape in.

They have easier games against
St George,
Newcastle,
Penrith but then play
Manly,
Cowboys,
Bulldogs,
Broncos,
Roosters.

They better win their next 4 straight else they I don't think they make the semis either.

Congrats on the perfect round. Calling it off at half time. Will call for the inquiry if I'm wrong.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Dammit, and I was running equal with Thinker as well. Oh well 5/6 is a good result at least.

Coach Potato's picture

Who knows who wins from here?

Since 1908 never has there only been 4 points between 5th and 14th. The usual gap is 8 to 10.

Sure there's been upsets, but this unprecedented. Sounds more and more logical that a team could win from 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th. Eagles, Raiders, Sharks, Eels all 50/1 or more, but in a year of upsets, whose going to discount you if you make the 8?

Coach Potato's picture

Evening football fans,
As Coach has pointed out, quite a lot of us got 6 from 6 in round 18 - including the top three on the tipping ladder.

The round 19 preview will be published on Wednesday.
