Brisbane Broncos vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
Wayne Bennett appears to have adopted a crop (or is that prop) rotation policy to get his troops through the Origin period. Thaiday and Hodges are back while Parker lies fallow for this round. Ben Hunt, presumably, takes over goal-kicking duties. Even with Parker resting, the starting pack for the Broncos has plenty of punch. They have a clear advantage over their opponents on that front and it's difficult to imagine them losing that all-important yardage battle. With room to move, Hunt and Milford could have a night to remember. My Friday night curse is a powerful spirit, but I'm backing the Broncos at home...confidently.
Verdict – Broncos by 14
Result - Broncos 44 defeated Sea Eagles 10
Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Leichhardt Oval
The Tigers don't like to lose at Leichhardt, but they did the last time they played here (in an extraordinary game against the Raiders). Losing two in a row at their spiritual home seems unlikely, but I'm struggling to warm to the line-up the Tigers have named. With Farah unavailable, Dene Halatau moves into dummy half. That's not a huge surprise, but Chris Lawrence starting in the second row is. This leaves the Tigers with a fairly inexperienced centre pairing of David Nofoaluma and Deloise Hoeter. It looks like Hoeter has been tasked with holding out James Roberts - sheesus! You all know about me and my Friday nights, but this game reeks of an upset. A quick check of the weather forecast and, for once, conditions in Sydney don't look too bad - another tick for the Titans. Don't trust me...I'm haunted.
Verdict – Titans by 2
Result - Titans 27 defeated Tigers 20
Newcastle Knights vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Hunter Stadium
The first of three daytime games this round (yay) and both these sides are better for the scheduling. More shuffling in the halves for the Knights as Kurt Gidley returns to replace Tyrone Roberts and Carlos Tuimavave gets another run at five-eighth. Both these sides lost last weekend but their were signs of life in each case. The Knights are the logical favourite at home but with just one win since round four I have my doubts - I think the post-Bennett hangover may have set in. The Raiders are bringing a settled line-up on the road and I'm going green.
Verdict – Raiders by 2
Result - Raiders 44 defeated Knights 22
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – NIB Stadium (Perth)
Note the venue - it's the perfect crime. The Bunnies drag the Warriors to the other end of the earth for this game every season. They get paid to take a game to Perth and they still, theoretically, have a home ground advantage. It is devilishly clever, and they tend to fly home with two points (and a bag of cash) as a result. Adam Reynolds (and Glenn Stewart) are still a few weeks away but the rest of the line-up looks solid. Night-time suits the Bunnies too - the Warriors play better during the day and the time zones push this game past the bedtimes of most of the lads from Auckland. As I said...it's the perfect crime.
Verdict – Rabbitohs by 8
Result - Rabbitohs 36 defeated Warriors 4
Penrith Panthers vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium
There could be a dozen line-up changes in this game before Saturday night, but I'll go with what I know. Slater is back and Soward is playing. We shall find out on the night. A slightly strange performance from the Storm on Monday night - the Roosters were at or near their best and it was almost as if Craig Bellamy put his queue in the rack. The purple machine rarely put in successive sub-par performances but they are on a quick back-up, and successive away games brings the Panthers well and truly into contention. The injury to Matt Moylan sways me - his exclusion limits the Panthers attacking options and the Storm know a thing or two about closing down the attack of their opponents. I'm far from confident, and if Slater is a late withdrawal I'd be changing my tip.
Verdict – Storm by 4
Result - Storm 20 defeated Panthers 0
Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – Remondis Stadium
Paul Gallen, aka 'The Gentleman of Rugby League', returns to lead his beloved Sharks. Sadly, for Gallen, he faces a red-hot Roosters outfit with an unchanged line-up that just demolished the team that was on the top of the ladder. The Sharks have also jagged the Sunday afternoon timeslot, which has been something of a death sentence for the lads from the Shire. They often save their worst for Sunday afternoons, and did so again last weekend when they got comprehensively destroyed by the Dragons. I am reminded of the Knight from Monty Python (it's just a flesh wound). I say Chickens....I say Chickens by a considerable margin.
Verdict – Roosters by 30
Result - Sharks 10 defeated Roosters 4
Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
Which bookmaking genius woke up and decided to make the Bulldogs favourite on Monday afternoon? All of them apparently. The Dragons were ruthless and brilliant last weekend and sit perched at the top of the ladder - deservedly so. Their defence is still holding up, and in the last two rounds they've been scoring points as well. Meanwhile the Bulldogs are outside of the eight and have conceded more than twice as many points as the Red V this season. As soon as I can find Ms Thinkers' handbag I shall be emptying it onto the Dragons I tells ya. Emptying it...gamble responsibly.
Verdict – Dragons by 8
Result - Bulldogs 29 defeated Dragons 16
Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys – Monday night – Pirtek Stadium
The Cowboys record in Sydney has never been great, and at Pirtek Stadium it's arguably worse -particularly when you consider that the Eels haven't exactly been the best Sydney team in recent years. I guess with each successive win the Cowboys edge closer to their next loss, but the same can be said for the Eels...and everyone. The Cowboys keep on winning, and an all Queensland grand final is entirely plausible this season. The Eels needed their share of luck to get the win last weekend, although to be fair a bit of luck was due to fall their way. I have to stick with the northerners - the weather in Sydney on Monday shouldn't kill them.
Verdict – Cowboys by 2
Result - Cowboys 36 defeated Eels 30

QLD will still win
Submitted by Coach Potato on
No Mark, I doubt it's intentional. The team in front doesn't hope for a decider to make it interesting. It's hardly an easy fix either. There won't be any straight swap because no newbie (pardon the pun) is going to play first receiver to Thurston. It's now about who will be the new no.6
I don't think it will be Hunt. Bennett doesn't like his half playing Origin of his team is up the top. (All bar room arguments now but I think Soward would have caused huge headaches 5 years ago). I also don't think it will be DCE. Hasn't been in sparkling form and I don't think QLD would like two no.7s - seeing it not work too well for NSW.
So who else is there? Inglis? Maybe. The roaming at fullback for Souths has leant itself more to half play than switching back out in the centres, and possibly why he wasn't as effective first game.
If it was me my preferences would be:
7. Thurston 6. Inglis
7. Thurston 6. Hunt
7. DCE 6. Thurston

It could be Morgan as well
Submitted by Coach Potato on
No. I know he's played there a "little bit" for the Cowboys, but your no. 6 needs to be your star, and is that Morgan? He's a good player, but I say no. He'll be on the bench, but not a starter.
I think it's much more of a headache than people realise.

Hope you put that money on Norman Coach!
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Daley is just a dickhead for saying after game 1 he was sticking with his halves combo. Talk about making a rod for the old back. Now what does he do now that Reynolds and Hodkinson are in form, and Pearce isn't. Reynolds will now come off the bench, but will that cut it in Origin? I think he needs to be a starter. Didn't 2014 prove that Pearce was more hindrance than help? Short bloody memories.

Hodkinson in form Coach? Not from what i saw tonight. Thought he was terrible. The game changed for the Dogs when he went off. Good collect on Cory Norman!

Truth be told I didn't see much of the game. Made a calculated guess. Yes Norman good. Parra not so good.
Actually Norman must now come into 5/8 calculations to partner Thurston.

The tipping ladder has been updated - top scorer for the round was 'a' with an impressive 7 from 8.
Tailspin and Mark Ashford share the lead at the mid-way point of the regular season - plenty in contention chomping at their heels.
All the best

I am within 3 of the leader

Was a good comeback, Cooper offside a metre his second try. Billy Slater seems to have created a precedent where that can no longer be a penalty.
Baggy you must be shattered. Would have had the victory speech written. Heart from the fact only the Broncos have put more points on the Cowboys.
Cowboys 10 straight. Qualify for top 4. Home semi. Home Prelim. Home game 2nd week if needed. Dont think streaks have anything to do with premierships? Better think again
Submitted by Johnny Ray on
What the Come-By-Chance was that ? Cowboys ! :'(

That was a excellent comeback from the Cowboys 10 in a row isn't that excellent
Submitted by Coach Potato on
If opposition teams wish to continue to wear blinkers, or start taking note, Cowboys are leaking plenty of points down their right hand side. Parra went there for lots of reward tonight as Manly did the week before. I wonder if Sticky was watching tonight ahead of their round 15 clash in Canberra?
Submitted by Declan_S on
I agree with Steel Panther. The Bulldogs looked just like NSW did all game when Hodkinson was on (waiting for an individual moment of brilliance from one of their x-factor players), whereas they virtually doubled their first half score in the last 20 when Reynolds was on.

Gidday Folks
It has taken me a while to catch up on all of the comments as I had a big weekend with a 40th party then a recovery break, lunch and dinner on Sunday.
Thanks Helper for the table of tips, it looks great. For all of you who are unsure of the winner of Origin 2, put all of your spare cash on NSW. Off to Suncorp all locked up.
I didn't see the bulldogs game as I was at work, with Graham injured and Hopkinson's apparent poor form, how bad did the Dragons play.
Looking forward to next week already.
Cheers

Gutted, absolutlely gutted. What annoyed me more was the number of close range tries scored off forward passes today, Kasiano to Brown couldn't have been more forward unless it was NFL. I'll talk later in the week.

I'm with you there Declan. The most frustrating thing about the Dogs is their 5th tackle option. Last night again was a raft of poor 5th tackle kicks/plays from both Hodkinson and Mbye. Twice I think one of the Morris boys got the ball on the last tackle. This was poor. When Reynolds came on he kicked to the corners and had Dugan pedalling backwards. This turned the game late on.
Chin up Baggy. Know it would have been hard to take. At 30-6 the Cowboys didn't look like they had a point in them let alone 36. Massive effort by the Cowboys though to turnaround such a deficit. A you'll be proud of your team.

Does anyone see a disturbing trend regards halftime/ fulltime doubles ?
Everyone knows that the two "turnaround" HT/FT options pay much greater than the lead-all-the-way options. 6 times out of 13 games. That would put punters well in front I would say.
Are all these once a fortnight get-back-off-the-canvas-after-being-knocked-out events to believed? Or does each time it happens convince you more that the Rocky movies and WWF were the real deal too? I'm starting to smell a stench that involves not just the Cowboys, but many an opposition team.

BUT what I really believe is a clean sweep to the mighty Maroons this year.

I have purposely left the Parramatta game alone, two reason being it hurts like hell to think about it. Secondly there were two tries that I was very iffy about. The last Cooper try, good on the ref for backing himself and making a definative call on field, but i'm a bit hazy about actual grounding. And there was a very very flat pass that the try scorer caught behind him.
Also during the round there was a try where the ball touched the line by a few microns. Rough tries to be scored against you, great tries if it is your team scoring them. I think we need to improve ball technology to contain a locator spot inside, if you suspend it by slightly stretchy silicone from the centre of each panel and each point then the ball handling won't be compromised, and with markers down each touch line, dead ball line, and the try line. If the marker breaks the line, the ref gets a tone in his ear piece and that ball is dead, out of touch, or a try. This would allow no more batting the ball back in to play, no more weird dead in goal calls, and make it easier to call a try if the ball is short.
