Round twenty selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

It's a good thing Mick Fanning dodged that shark - the Titans need every fan they have. Unlike Mick Fanning, It looked like the Titans gave up last week, and that is unusual for this club. If they don't turn up again for the local derby I'd be surprised. Aiden Sezer is back, but it won't be enough. When Bennett was asked last year (by Lachlan Murdoch) why the Broncos should welcome him home his response was, as you would expect from Bennett, straight-forward. "We'll win a premiership." If it happens (and I think it will) the cagey old buggar could be the next statue outside Lang Park.

Verdict – Broncos by 22

Result - Broncos 34 defeated Titans 0

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

The only change to the Roosters line-up that kept the Warriors on zero last week is the inclusion of one of the best second-rowers in the NRL in Boyd Cordnor. Their performance last week was reminiscent of some of their performances back in 2013. In that year they were the only team to score more than 600 points (640) and the only team to concede less than 350 points (325) during the home and away season. There were seven or eight occasions that season when they kept their opponent to nil. Remember that the Warriors scored 94 points in the three games prior to the duck egg against the Roosters - they aren't an easy team to keep out. I don't expect the Tigers to score either.

Verdict – Roosters by 32

Result - Roosters 33 defeated Tigers 8

New Zealand Warriors vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

A quick turnaround for the Sea Eagles, combined with some international travel, makes this quite the challenge for the Brookvale boys. I don't have a great deal of faith in the Sea Eagles pack at the best of times so I can't see them winning that contest under these circumstances. Given that, we should get another chance to see some Shaun Johnson magic...and who doesn't like magic?

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result - Sea Eagles 32 defeated Warriors 12

Melbourne Storm vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday night – McLean Stadium

McLean Stadium is in Napier, New Zealand if you were puzzled by the venue. There's no shortage of Kiwis in the Storm seventeen so I expect they'll have their fare share of support in the stands. While the Dragons continue to be competitive they haven't won a game since round 12. I'm sure they'll be competitive again, but if anyone knows how to grind out a win in a competitive fixture it's the purple machine. Cameron Munster showed me enough last week to prove that the Storm have a handy replacement when Billy Slater finally calls time. He's no Slater (obviously), but he's good.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Storm 22 defeated Dragons 4

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

A 'dead knight bounce' from Newcastle last week with their convincing win against the Titans. This weekend they face the defending premiers at home...and Issac Luke is back. There'll be glimpses of goodness from the Novacastrians - they do look a better side with Mullen in the halves and Gidley at fullback. Glimpses won't beat the better teams and there's no denying the Rabbitohs are still one of those.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 14

Result - Rabbitohs 52 defeated Knights 6

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders – Sunday afternoon – Pepper Stadium

In what looks like a lop-sided round of footy this is the game you want to be getting right. The Panthers are a warm favourite but I'm struggling to find a lot of love for them on the back of their last two performances. Importantly, those two big losses were against good teams (Roosters and Storm), and prior to that they did put the Bunnies to the sword. On paper they should win, but I feel like this Raiders pack can dominate. The Raiders have won 5 of 8 away games this season. The teams that beat them (Roosters, Warriors and the Dragons when they were going well) are better than the Panthers. In any case, daytime conditions in Penrith aren't that much different to daytime conditions in Canberra at this time of year.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result - Raiders 34 defeated Panthers 24

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – Belmore Sports Ground

The game of the round, at least in part due to the venue. The weather looks promising and they'll pack the stands at Belmore. There is something special about a sunny Sunday afternoon game at a traditional ground in Sydney. As a bonus we have two teams in form and playing with confidence. I still doubt both sides against the top three or four teams, but it looks more likely each week that both these sides will be rounding out the top eight come September. I'm tipping the home ground advantage (and a Hodkinson field goal) gets the Doggies over the line. At $1.40 I couldn't possibly back the Bulldogs, particularly when I can get $1.53 about the Sharks with 12.5 points start. Dogs....just. Excited.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 1

Result - Sharks 18 defeated Bulldogs 16

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Monday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

I've mentioned previously that the Broncos came through the Origin period undefeated. It's also worth noting that the only game the Cowboys lost during that time is the game they rested Jonathan Thurston. They dominated the Sea Eagles last Monday night and there's no reason to think they can't carry that form into this round. Many of you may recall the last time these sides met (also on a Monday night) when the Cowboys came from behind in one of the more extraordinary victories you're ever likely to see. Since then, I feel the Cowboys have made an effort to focus on starting well, and in recent weeks they've been the first to score more often than not. They'll be no come-from-behind victory this Monday night - expect the Cowboys to lead throughout and win well.

Verdict – Cowboys by 20

Result - Cowboys 46 defeated Eels 4

Wally Lewis - round twenty selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Thursday night or early Friday morning.

  • Tigers vs ROOSTERS
  • WARRIORS vs Sea Eagles

William Hill Premium Price Odds  - NRL Round 20

I haven't posted one of these for a while - this is pretty good.

South Sydney to beat the Knights on Saturday night at ANZ Stadium paying $2.00 (instead of $1.17). Maximum bet at those odds is $25. Gamble resonsibly and good luck. Here's the link:

Coach Potato's picture

Sure Panthers need to win 5 more, but with the fight of Fanning and a draw like this, they must have a shot.

Raiders
Souths
Parra
Warriors
Dragons
Raiders
Knights

Coach Potato's picture

...and they really need to be honest up there and build a monument to Inglis before anyone else

The Thinker's picture

Heh heh....sorry Coach

I'm getting my surfers mixed up - his mate Joel Parkinson is the mad Titans fan.

As for Mick, they are his 'second' team. I'm sure he's not super impressed with either this season.

Coach Potato's picture

Astronomically speaking, I bet he's happy to see all the stars out each night, and have a go at counting the lucky ones.

Hey, you want the PM too QLD?, he's yours.

Johnny Ray's picture

Yeah ... First off Thinker I don't know what you mean by Shaun Johnson magic ! Last week he was supposed to play like this : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vWPQQbldFjw instead guys last week we got this : https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=RDRFDW9b_ejfI&params=OAI%253D&v=RFDW9b_... Yeah ... Pretty bad ! Here's hoping he can turn it all around this week ! Let's get on with our picks :

Broncos - Expecting this to be a lot closer than people expect. Broncos by ten points.

Roosters - Experience is everything and these players have it where it counts. Roosters by twenty eight points.

Warriors - Warriors to bounce back by playing against dead rubber side who without their star recruit DCE has lost what little hope they still had of reaching playoffs. Warriors by sixteen points.

Dragons - Storm still struggling and it only because they played a team last week worse off than them in injuries that is making them favourites here. Don't believe the hype. Dragons by twelve points.

Rabbitohs - Bunnies to get home here. Bunnies by eighteen points.

Raiders - Panthers have sadly turned to crap and are now looking certain to make bottom four at end of this year because of all their injuries. Raiders by six points.

Sharks - This unbelievably is looking to be game of round especially since it's being played at Bulldogs spiritual home ground at Belmore. Sharks by four points.

Cowboys - Eels are another team that has sadly turned to crap because of injuries late in their season. Cowboys by forty two points.

Thanks Thinker. Thanks everybody. Good luck with all your tips and go New Zealand Warriors ! Kiwi Power ! Peow ! Peow ! ;-D

Coach Potato's picture

The trick to magic is to catch people out when they least suspect it. When it comes to NRL's magician, Shaun Johnson, that just means it can't be every week.

I know he's got more tricks in his bag. Just waiting for finals time. Now is to early to bring them out.

The cross field try assist against the Storm in the 2011 prelim was the illusionist at his best. Or so I thought. I know he's got more tricks. Can't wait til the next moment we least suspect.

In case somehow, SOMEHOW you forgot - here it is again ...

I think there's as much truth about Fanning's second team as the Thinker's first. I think the Rooster thing was a big Thurston dummy.

mark ashford's picture

Morning all
I'm with you Coach "a fine dummy" from the Thinker!
This week I like
Broncos
Roosters
Warriors
Rabbits
Storm
Panthers
Bulldogs
Cowboys
Good luck hope your team goes well.

The Thinker's picture

Show and go boys......show and go!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Rightio, Having outed the Thinker as a Roosters man, your now calling his credibility? Here are my Tips for this weekend.

Roosters - Last time the Tigers took on a top side, they beat the Rabbits and beat them well. So the Roosters should be looking for a bit of trouble, Ain't gunna happen says I. A comfortable win for the Roosters.

Broncos - I wish the Broncos would regress a year or two so I could tip against them with confidence. The script has been written and the Titans are going to be the Bond villian who has the Broncos in peril before letting them unravel their plans just at the 45 min mark.

Warriors - 14 players and staff threatened with cutting, recipe for a great Manly win across the creek. I think that any discussion of home finals should include NZ as they usually fire and fire well in their own state.

Storm - Napia hey, could backfire on them but both teams travelling, Benji being home, Who knows. But with out a win in their last 5 games, its hard to see a Dragons win materialising.

Rabbits - I prefer a Dead Cat Bounce as if your canny you can clean up. But a cat only bounces once and then it lies still. We could go with Dead Knights Walking, as this game should defiantly execute any chances of a late season revival.

Raiders - Sorry Coach, but I'm going against the west Sydney to head WEST. I think that last weeks lose was a farce, particularity the apology from the on field ref about that forward pass call. Call it and move on. But the Raiders played well and I think that they can bounce the Panthers at home. Does anyone know who is going to be in the box before the Tips close??

Sharks - Again confidence should help out, the Sharks know they can mix it with the best out there, and on paper they are a pretty good team. I think kicking the last few points and stepping up in extra time will help the Sharks and Valentine Holmes to get the Win here.

Eels - The BOYS will travel well, and they will put on a good showing, the Cowboys right still looks to be one way traffic as far as attacking teams are concerned, and we have the big bodies to plug the holes in the center. I am Hoping for the BOYS to play hard, play big and bring a win home. C'arn the BOYS.

Ferg's picture

You have the Raiders down twice. No Roosters or Tigers, no Broncos or Titans.

a's picture

I think Coach was talking about Panthers run home to the finals

a's picture

Here are my tips

Broncos by 12 I think Broncos will continue their good form against the Titans

Roosters by 10 I think Roosters will continue Titans misery here

Warriors by 8 I think Warriors will end Manly season here

Storm by 6 This looks like to me a good game and Storm will win it

Rabbitohs by 8 I think Rabbitohs will be too strong here

Panthers by 1 A 50-50 game win it will be Panthers by a field goal

Bulldogs by 2 Another close game here will be won by the Bulldogs

Cowboys by 50 Hey Cowboys will win by 50 here write this down in your notebooks

Coach Potato's picture

Sherlock, Watson, and myself have deduced that Thinker started following the game more likely in the 80s, and so followed team of the 80s, Parramatta. Roosters from the early to mid 70s doesn't match my impression of Thinkers age. Would have only been a toddler.

Thinker's response today gives more creedence to my suspicions than otherwise. Problem is now, if we got thrown a dummy, how will we ever know the truth?

Maybe Thinker can go back to the ol' telephone booth, do a quick change, and come back out again?

Johnny Boney's picture

Hi these were my tips for this week:

Broncos by 25- Titans are crap, Broncos premiership contenders this was an obvious one to pick.

Roosters by 28- Roosters to absolutely smash Tigers here obviously.

Warriors by 10- Johnson's magic will bring the Warriors home here and Fishiaii is back so Warriors for me.

Dragons by 4- Dragons will breathe fire and snap a 6 game losing streak, Go you mighty Dragons.

Rabbitohs by 32- A one-sided affair here going the Rabbitohs way here I think.

Panthers by 1- Toss of the coin here, Panthers just... at home will be buoyed with Simmons return, Simmons to score double here.

Bulldogs by 12- The Dogs will be too good here at Belmore.

Cowboys by 40- Cowboys to absolutely destroy Parra here, Parra too depleted.

Thanks guys and just going to give my dad a big happy b'day, cheers.

Coach Potato's picture

I bet your not proud of Roosters long long long list of off-field behaviour, not to mention penchant for buying players sacked for off-field behaviour - Carney, Ferguson, Jennings. I see why you were in the closet about your support

The Thinker's picture

The Chooks might have picked this guy up if the Panthers didn't keep looking after him:

From wikiworld:
Craig Gower has been involved in a number of alcohol-related off-field incidents. In 1999, Gower exposed himself to a female Irish tourist in a Coogee bar, blaming his behaviour on alcohol intoxication. He was dumped from the Kangaroos squad and fined A$2,500 by the NRL and a further A$500 in court after pleading guilty to indecent exposure.

In December 2005, Gower was fired as Panthers captain after incidents at a charity golf event where he argued with several guests, groped the teenage daughter of former league player Wayne Pearce, chased Mitchell Pearce with a bottle before vomiting on him, streaked nude around the resort, stole and crashed a golf cart, held a butter knife to the throat of a Sydney radio personality before throwing it at resort guests, and engaged in a brawl with resort security before being ejected from the official function and detained by police. He was handed a "final warning" by the National Rugby League and fined A$100,000, with A$90,000 to be paid to an NRL programme encouraging the responsible use of alcohol by league players and $10,000 to replace the destroyed golf cart. Gower was "deeply unhappy" that the Penrith Panthers club did not defend his reputation, and at one stage threatened to "walk" from the club.

Allegedly inebriated with alcohol in a bar at Kings Cross on 11 February 2007, Gower allegedly tried to kiss one man before biting him on the neck and sparking a brawl, and is accused of assaulting another man. The Panthers club controversially reappointed Gower as captain in 2007, claiming the Peppermint Lounge incident was just a media "beat-up". Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser said Gower was unfit to be captain, due to his alleged lewd behaviour at the charity golf event which she attended, and Sarah Maddison, spokesperson for the Women's Electoral Lobby, said "reappointing Craig Gower would send all the wrong messages."

Coach Potato's picture

$10k to replace a cart that only cost $4k?? That's a bit rich.

Sure, I'm not comparing angels to saints, but Panthers are a much cleaner unit than most clubs. You've delved back a ways to dig that up.

Noone needs to remind you of your current player roster's history.

Coach Potato's picture

*... I mean angels to .. devils ??

Coach Potato's picture

Was hiring Blake Ferguson sending the right messages Ms Maddison? What about SKD? All ok as long as he says sorry Ms Maddison?

Christ Thinker, great research and all, but you don't get a start on the debating team.

Coach Potato's picture

What horse did Dawn Fraser ride in on anyway. Someone who thinks if you were born in Australia but not your parents, you have no right to be here. Hardly the person you want to seek out for moral guidance.

a's picture

So might Benard Tomic

Coach Potato's picture

Mud keeps stickin' to the Roosters Thinker. Kinda like the stuff that comes out Nate Myles' ass. What a crock that was about the alcohol ban a few years back. Was just a cover for the coach and players doin' other stuff instead. Ask Freddy. Ask Finchy. Ask Mason. Ask anybody.

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Another wonderful week of footy is upon us. Looking at the matches for this weekend it appears that, on paper at least, most of the games are pretty straightforward in terms of winners but …

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from being on here it’s that there’s no such thing as “dead set certainties” in this wonderful game of ours. One thing that is fairly certain however is that Newbie usually gets his tips 50% correct and 50% wrong each week.

I’ve just had a quick look-see at our tipping ladder and notice that I’m 18 points away from tigerholic and scotty so not much chance of me collecting any prizes this year. I suppose that’s a good thing insofar as there’s no pressure on me to maintain my position on the ladder. No pressure means that I can now tip without worrying who’s challenging me or who I have to keep ahead of. O Joy of Joys!

Having said that, it now comes down to announcing this week’s tips to the world. Hello world! Just be warned that some of ‘em are “out there” and I’m hoping I might be able to “jag” a few more than usual. OK, let’s get into it …

Broncos - The Titans let me down last week and the Ponies are travelling along nicely. Broncos for me.

Roosters - Another “no-brainer” surely. Go you Mighty Chooks!

Manly - Sorry JR but I’m desperate for an upset this week. Don’t give the Brookie Boys much of a chance but I’ll stick with ‘em in a probable forlorn hope that they get up somehow.

Knights - Yeah, I’m tipping the Knights here. Why? Absolutely no idea other than I keep thinking about my 50-50 results each week. Is this game one of them or have I punted on the wrong match to take the risk with?

Storm - Just can’t get a handle on the Big Red V anymore. Both Melbourne and the Dragons are flying across the ditch I see but Obi-Wan has told me that the Storm Troopers will get up.

Raiders - Thought the Green Machine were a tad unlucky last week but hey, all credit to the Sharkies for fighting their way back. I’ll give the Raiders another chance.

Sharks - Another mob I can’t work out. Gotta admire what they’ve done this year (even with that Cry Baby in there) and what they did last week. I’ll go the Sharks.

Cowboys - Tough one this. Just because they’re a class act, I’ll tip the Cowboys.

@ The Coach - Interesting comments regarding the Boss’ team and the Roosters’ habit of picking up “troubled souls”. You’re absolutely right my friend but my boys are my boys and just like family, I will always (well almost always) forgive their mistakes. A Rooster I am and a Rooster I’ll always be, warts and all. I want to hear everyone’s comments, be they good or bad. It’s what makes this life such fun. I never take bad comments so seriously that it gets me angry or entices me to get nasty. Please keep those insightful and perceptive opinions coming my man. I value them and really look forward to reading them each and every week. Thinking differently rocks! Much respect!

@ Johnny Ray - Love ya new avatar big-fella. Only you could come up with something like that. Cool!

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. Can you ever get tired of sleeping? Hmmm…

Coach Potato's picture

To balance, apologies to all diehard Roosters fans. No doubt they've been a great team on the field since the '09 spoon. Pretty sure they used the spoon for melting stuff though, and hard not to do well when one team has twice the salary cap of the others and Ian Schubert is the auditor.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Newbie, what about upload and download? Sounds like the same thing to me.

Coach Potato's picture

Wait wait wait. Initially agreeing that you were throwing a dummy - but then showing that the dummy was it's own dummy? Hmmm?

Coach Potato's picture

Why can't loads go sideways or diagonal?

Tailspin's picture

Hey everyone hope you are all ready for some big scores this weekend,

Steel Panther's picture

A lot of conjecture this week about The Thinker being a Rooster's fan. I guess if nothing else it's given Coach something else to focus on. I too followed the Roosters when I first discovered the great game back in the 80s but that was more because my favourite Kiwi Olsen Filipaina played for the Chooks. At that time most people from this side of the ditch supported Manly prior to the Warriors entering the comp.

On with my picks. In my work comp we have a "joker" round which is worth double points so I'm bringing out the card this week as the draw seems pretty lopsided but with that I know they'll be upsets along the way.

Broncos, Roosters, Warriors, Storm, Rabbitohs, Panthers, Bulldogs & Cowboys

Will be going along to Mt Smart tomorrow to catch the game.

Have a good weekend everyone and best of luck!!

mark ashford's picture

The Thinker has spoken.
Good enough for me he's a Rooster.
I was at first sceptical as I was certain he was a Bronco but a Rooster he is.
Coach when I last looked the blues had 14 NRL clubs to pick from and the maroons only 4. Now I know Qlders play in NSW clubs and to a lesser extent NSWers play in the other 4.
Take out the NZ born and loyal Kiwis and surely you must concede that NSW has a far greater roster to pick from (I believe it's about 65%)
Do your stats show why Qld has won 9 of the past 10 series?
Get over Inglis there are numerous NSWers who weren't born there.
Sterling and Tamou come to mind.
Finally none of the clubs are lilly white so why single out the Roosters for a spray.
It's a tough game played by tough blokes who certainly aren't Rhodes scholars. Silly decisions are made (off the field) and the media feast like a pack of rabid dogs.
By the way I'm in no way condoning violence toward females.
What say you oh statistical one?

Coach Potato's picture

Simple to me. A team without Greg Inglis is far weaker than a team with Greg Inglis. All agreed? Fool of you say no. So firstly, take Inglis out of the Qld team going right back to when he started Origin in what year ... Oh yes, 2006. First year of the streak. Then have him play for NSW instead for the last 10 years. My guess is NSW would have won more series than lost in that time. You say we all need to get over the guy who is the actual difference.

Sterlo was great but he was never the difference.

And I don't mean to sound patronising, but where do you get the idea that Qld'ers only play for Qld NRL teams? and NSW players only play for NSW NRL teams? Thats the most uneducated comment I've heard all year.

Coach Potato's picture

You say you don't condone it, but you are an avid supporter of the team that still harbours Thaiday, and Boyd.

You are also a supporter of the Qld team that includes Inglis.

Don't condone? I would say you're not trying hard enough

Coach Potato's picture

Dont condone, but haven't heard a bad word uttered about Kenny-Dowall this week. Don't condone hey Roosters. Could have fooled me

Declan_S's picture

Nooooo I thought I had commented by clearly it didn't go through :((
If it's not too hard to put my tips through Thinker, I went the same as you this week. If this is against policy that's alright I guess :/
Time of posting: Halfway through first half.

Declan_S's picture

*but clearly

The Thinker's picture

Declan S

This is a tough call, because I am 99% sure you would have went with the Broncos and Roosters in the Friday night games.....but:

I've been saying since the beginning tipsters need their tips in before kick-off, so I'm kinda stuck with that in this situation.

That said, I'll put your tips through for the remaining six games.

Sorry about that.

Baggy_Gee's picture

A lot of QLD's success is built on the fact that the Australian side is almost a carbon copy of the QLD side. Now I HATE!!!! the pick and stick, Boyd playing 1 club game and straight into origin? Get off the grass. But that confidence and combinations build to give the players the ability to walk out on to the field with a days notice and play as a cohesive unit. NSW had the same strengths when we won 3 straight back in the early 2000's and late 1990's. Also it is part the fans fault, hard to get up for a home game when no one is in your corner at home. But can we please not mention origin until next year, biggest blight on the game as it stands.

mark ashford's picture

Coach a trip to specsavers is in order.
Read my comment again, I said Qlders play in NSW teams and vice versa.
If you are placing Qld success squarely on Inglis shoulders then you disappoint me. Several times in the past 10 years Inglis has gone missing through injury or disinterest. He is good but I think you give him too much credit.
I'm not a Rooster fan at all but surely SKD is innocent until proven guilty?
I wonder how many of your beloved Panthers have given their girlfriends/wives a touch up and it's gone unreported?

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans. I haven't posted a betting promotion from William Hill for a while but this one is pretty good. They're offering $2.00 about the Rabbits beating the Knights at ANZ tonight (Saturday). That's a lot better than the $1.17 you'll get elsewhere. Maximum bet at those odds is $25. Gamble responsibly and good luck. Here's the link if you're interested:
