In a competition where picking the winner of a game at half-time is difficult, it takes a certain boldness to put fingers to keyboard and predict the NRL ladder for the entire season weeks before the season even begins. Will I get it right? I doubt I'm even close, but here I go, boldly typing where many others have boldly typed before:
1st - Brisbane Broncos
Wayne Bennett probably got his Broncos to the grand final one year too soon, and they almost won anyway. They'll be better this year, and the signing of James Roberts (to replace Justin Hodges) is a masterstroke. Josh McGuire missed the back end of last season and his return bolsters a pack of forwards that should cope with a reduced interchange better than most, and how good are those Broncos halves going to look when their opponents are on tiring legs? Corey 'Benjamin Button' Parker defies all logic and gets better every year. His offloads to the Broncos little men are priceless. Clearly the team to beat.
Key addition – James Roberts
Rising star - Anthony Milford
Player to watch - Corey Parker
2nd - Manly Sea Eagles
The achilles heel for the Sea Eagles in 2015 was their well-beaten forward pack, and they've done much to rectify that situation this season. Nate Myles is a great signing even if he's edging toward the end of his playing career. Lewis Brown is under-rated, and Martin Taupau is the sort of player than can become a crowd favourite at Brookvale. For the Sea Eagles to prosper this season their new halves combination of Cherry-Evans and Walker needs to gel - note that Lyon can slot in alongside Cherry-Evans if needed. Departing coach Geoff Toovey went close to winning a premiership as coach. They just might win without him.
Key additions – Nate Myles, Martin Taupau
Rising star - Tom Trbojevic
Players to watch - Daly Cherry-Evans
3rd - Melbourne Storm
Assuming Billy Slater comes back somewhere near his best, there's no reason to jump off the purple machine just yet. Munster is clearly the fullback-in-waiting, but he'll be slotting into the centres this season. We know what we get with the Storm - top four for mine.
Key additions – Nil
Rising star - Cameron Munster
Player to watch - The big three (again)
4th - Canterbury Bulldogs
Never underestimate Des Hasler and his ability to do what he can with what he has. What he does have is a pack of forwards that would sink an aircraft carrier. They may be big but quite a few of them are 80 minute footballers, and plenty of them have some sublime ball skills. The surprise packet.
Key addition – Will Hopoate
Rising star - Moses Mbye
Player to watch - Josh Jackson
5th - North Queensland Cowboys
They were arguably the best squad on paper in 2015 and they got the job done in what has to be one of the greatest sporting contests on Australian soil. They've managed to keep that very strong roster intact. The only question mark around their title defence is history - the last team to go back-to-back was 25 years ago. Records get broken...this team are good enough to do so.
Key additions – Nil
Rising star - Michael Morgan
Players to watch - The JT's (Thurston, Tamou, Taumalolo)
6th - South Sydney Rabbitohs
I tipped, perhaps foolishly, that the Bunnies would miss the eight last season. They ended up in 7th...so I was wrong, but close. Still wrong though. Sam Burgess returns, and he is one of those players that can carry others around him - I expect the whole team will lift with him back in the side. Inglis needs no introduction to anybody, but if those two superstars stay healthy and in form the red and green are a team to be seen. Watching with interest.
Key additions – Sam Burgess
Rising star - Cameron McInnes
Player to watch - Greg Inglis
7th - Parramatta Eels
Active in the off-season, it's hard not to be impressed with the additions to the Eels roster. If Foran and Norman work as a halves pairing the Eels aren't far off a top four spot. My roughie for a finals berth.
Key additions – Keiran Foran, Michael Jennings, Michael Gordon, Beau Scott
Rising star - Tepai Moeroa
Player to watch - Corey Norman
8th - New Zealand Warriors
There's a tavern not far from Thinker Lodge. I drop in from time to time and I usually give the steak a go...it always disappoints. It looks good on the menu, and every 12 months or so I'm told they have a new chef in the kitchen. It gets my hopes up, and it would bring much happiness to my life if they got it right...but they don't. The New Zealand Warriors are that steak. And here I am tempted again, despite all the gristle and let downs. Johnson, Tuivasa-Sheck and Luke in the same line-up is a spine to dine on. The steadying influence of Robson looks good too. They're a chance here. Medium-rare thanks.
Key additions – Issac Luke, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck
Rising star - Tuimoala Lolohea
Player to watch - Shaun Johnson
9th - Cronulla Sharks
The Shire has been suffering under an El Nino weather pattern since 1967 - there are more than a few who think the drought may finally break. They've had a big pack of forwards since The Thinker was a boy, but it's been a while since they've had such exciting talent in their backline. Holmes and Bird can, potentially, bring the sort of football we used to see from the likes of Peachey, Campbell and Rogers in their prime. It makes for entertaining footy, and I haven't been able to say that about Cronulla for quite some time. Ennis and Maloney in the spine add composure, and the goalkicking boot of Maloney will win the Sharks plenty of those tight games. So why do I have them outside the eight? I don't like Paul Gallen much...it's hard to let go.
Key addition – James Maloney
Rising star - Valentine Holmes
Players to watch - Valentine Holmes, Jack Bird
10th - Sydney Roosters
What's this? The Sydney glamour club outside the top eight. Some big departures in the off-season with Jennings, Maloney and Tuivasa-Sheck moving on. Couple that with the injuries to Cordnor and Waerea-Hargreaves and the mental state (and playing future) of Mitchell Pearce and you have to wonder if this side is more of a wooden spoon candidate than a premiership contender. Joe Burgess comes with lofty expectations given his performances in the English Super League, but he's a wait and see for mine. They've won the last three minor premierships in a row, and that's a feat we're not likely to see often, but I doubt this squad can make it four.
Key additions – Joe Burgess (potentially)
Rising star - Jayden Nikorima
Players to watch - Jackson Hastings
11th - Penrith Panthers
Still rebuilding, but what are they rebuilding? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? I still can't make it out but it doesn't look like a premiership.
Key addition – Trent Merrin
Rising star - Matt Moylan
Player to watch - Matt Moylan
12th - Wests Tigers
While so much of the focus in Tiggertown has been on Robbie Farah, our eyes will soon turn to the performance of the pack of forwards Farah will be steering around the park. On paper they look like they'll struggle. Outside of that the playmakers and backline are full of promise, but it's in the forwards that games are run and won, and that is where the struggle lies. Signs of life, but a finals campaign in 2016 looks unlikely.
Key addition – Matt Ballin
Rising star - David Nofoaluma
Player to watch - James Tedesco
13th - Canberra Raiders
The entertainers. This is a side with a lot of points in them but, sadly, this is a team that will concede a lot of points too. I can't see them making the top eight, but I'll be doing my best to watch the Green Machine every time they get a daytime slot in the schedule.
Key additions – Aiden Sezer
Rising star - Joseph Tapine
Player to watch - Blake Austin
14th - St George Illawarra Dragons
I didn't see the Dragons making the top eight last year, but make it they did. For mine they over-achieved last season, and it may be difficult to back that up again this year. There's nothing wrong with their spine or their backline, but those forwards look like they'll struggle against the better teams. Not yet.
Key addition – Tim Lafai
Rising star - Euan Aitken
Player to watch - Josh Dugan
15th - Gold Coast Titans
They missed out on Daly Cherry-Evans, they let Aiden Sezer go (to make way for Daly Cherry-Evans), and their biggest strike weapon last year (James Roberts) has moved north. Now Kane Elgey is out for the season with injury. How the Titans are going to launch successful attacking raids on their opponents is anyone's guess, but it's a lot of pressure for Tyrone Roberts. Ashley Taylor looks a bright prospect but his best years will be many years from now. A tough year on the glitter strip.
Key additions – Chris McQueen
Rising star - Ashley Taylor
Player to watch - Tyrone Roberts
16th - Newcastle Knights
Nice guys finish last, and new Knights coach Nathan Brown is a very nice guy. I wish nothing but good fortune for Brown on his return to the NRL, and I'm one football fan who thinks the NRL is a better competition when the Knights are going well. Prove me wrong boys.
Key addition – Trent Hodkinson
Rising star - Sione Mata’utia
Player to watch - Dane Gagai

Hi Thinker, I can't believe we are back at the start of another season. I am aiming to do what no team has done since the Bronco;s and go back to back.
Thanks for having me back and good luck to everyone involved.

Greetings one and all. I hope you all enjoyed your break - I mean, not as much as Mitchell P enjoyed that..., yeah - so anyway, nice to be back.
Thinker probably has it right with the Panthers. Only thing to do from here then is overachieve. Overachieve through to October would be fine.
World Club Challenge tips
St Helens - hopefully featuring ex-Panthers Luke Walsh and Travis Burns
Wigan - the team playing the Broncos
North Queensland - Cowboys know this may not come about too often. One chance to take it all, and keen not to leave it til the last second.

Perhaps that Tigers jersey he won last season needed a larger neck size. It must be cutting off the circulation to his head.

Curious to me that although most people think the NRL and Super League seasons run concurrently, that's not actually 100% the case. The Super League season is now 2 weeks old. This weekends matches against the Aussies will effectively be their third full game. That's a huge advantage in regard to match fitness in my books. No amount of trial games replicate the real 80 minutes. It's no wonder the Poms have won the majority of these games, even though Super League has long been regarded as the NRL's poor cousin. For the record, Wigan sit 2-0(to play Broncos), St Helens 1-1(to play Roosters)and Leeds 0-2(to play Cowboys in the big one). Great value to be had on the Pommie teams I say. Match fitness, home crowds, cold as all ....!!
Any UK bloggers out there? Would love some first hand opinion of the Pommie teams.

Intresting stats
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Stats meant nothing. Roosters ran all over St Helens this morning. Although lots of 50-50 calls went the Roosters way early including an incredible ruling where the Roosters knocked on about 5 metres, St Helens picked up the ball, and the ref calls last tackle for St Helens?!?! From the next set, Roosters score their first. Could have been closer if not for half-wits running the game.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Broncos smash Wigan in what I would actually regard as a pretty lacklustre affair. My gut says while the NRL skill level has not improved at all over the last 5 - 10 years, relying on the same old plays, the English Super League has gone backwards 5 - 10 years relying totally on ad-lib play and expecting something to just happen.

Hi everyone I'm new to this. Can't wait for the nrl season to kick off. Good luck to all the teams and go the West Tigers!!
From what I've seen from the West Tigers last year they will make the playoffs this year
Submitted by Johnny Ray on
Awesome. And we're back for another season of NRL picks and dude personally between you and me I can't wait till we get things started ! Man I don't know about you but with American Football over as soon as it began and Rugby still not on I've been so desperate for something to watch I even started watching this : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r21LdEQKxqI ! Yeah. .. Let's get on with this year's NRL team picks :
1.) Broncos - Master coach Wayne Bennett will be determine make up for mistakes his team made during last year Grand Final, giving it away to Cowboys in the last minutes of game. It's this push for final greatness is why I'm picking Brisbane Broncos to be minor premiers.
2.) Warriors - You told someone at start of this decade that Dragons, Rabbitohs and Cowboys would all win grand finals they would all look at you like you were crazy and then they would spend the next ten to twenty minutes trying to explain you that big tall dark scary man that been following you around all day is your shadow ! Man maybe I really am that nuts but as Warriors fan and a Rugby League fan I do think when you look at our spine and our halves combination and then compare it to other teams, this year will finally be our year !
3.) Sharks - They have players where it counts and a coach to match ! What they haven't had is alot of luck but this year I'm predicting that things will change that's why I am picking big things for the Sharks !
4.) Cowboys - Talking about luck, Nth Qld Cowboys had it all going their way last year and though I can't see things happening like that again, on talent alone you have got to pick them for a top four spot.
5.) Rabbitohs - G.I will win them more games than they will lose that's why I'm picking the Bunnies to get a place deep inside the top eight !
6.) Raiders - Along with Knights, I'm picking Raiders to be big surprise movers of 2016. Just look at their backline and tell me I'm wrong ...
7.) Bulldogs - Des Hasler doesn't coach losing sides. Bulldogs are a certainty for top eight spot and could go deep in this year's playoff.
8.) Eels - Would anybody really be surprised when looking at their roster of players they've got if Paramatta makes top eight this year ?
9.) Storm - Too much reliance of an ageing roster of players will cost Melbourne Storm place in top eight this year is what I'm predicting ...
10.) Knights - They'll improve as team this year but then not by much ...
11.) Roosters - After Mitchell Pearce scandal and loss of RTS from their lineup don't expect a lot this year from the boys from Bondi.
12.) Sea Eagles - Experience will get them home in some games but expect really bad season from this team now their good coach Geoff Toovey has gone ...
13) Panthers - Does anybody think they'll do anything at all this year ? Dude I don't !
14) Titans - They will continue to struggle this year for points and a loss of significant players as franchise tries to rebuild from last year.
15.) Dragons - The surprise disappointment for this year.
16.) Tigers - Won't win. Can't win. Not when there's still too much inner turmoil going on inside club at senior level.
Awesome. Thanks again Thinker ! Thanks everybody ! Enjoy the rest of your summer ... ;-D
Submitted by Coach Potato on
People might be right again about the Panthers but I reckon if you're worth your salt when it comes to knowing your footy, you will know Moylan, Mansour, Whare, Watene-Zelezniak, Wallace, Soward, are all from the back line that got to the prelim in 2014 and still there. In the forwards we've lost Lewis Brown, but still have McKendry, Segeyaro, and now the reliable Merrin, with the classy Cartwright plus two of the Jennings boys. So 2015 didn't go to plan but 2014 was only the year before. Short memories for some.
Submitted by Johnny Ray on
Sorry Coach but when your as crazy as I am your memory is always the first thing to go. That and reason and the ability for rational coherent thought. "Hey I just noticed something ! Te Maire Martin. Panther 2016.
Who the hell is he?
You'll say that now, but he'll be in your SuperCoach /NRL fantasy team as soon as he starts getting game time. He should be anyway.
Here is a little highlights clip. Forget the first minute or so where he just runs fast - although certainly nothing wrong with that.
Look at the 2nd and 3rd minutes, the crisp accurate passing in traffic / through traffic. (Yes Benji and Cooper, only a fool looks away before they pass the ball - have a look at how it's done). It takes amazing vision and skill to get this right time after time. Biased as I may be, some of these passes are just beautiful to watch.
My only prediction come season's end is there'll be plenty of egg-on-face, so would be an idea to stock up on bacon and sausages.

Hi everyone,
Thank “the bloke I don’t believe in” the footy’s just about to start again. Been semi-lost since last year’s GF. It was the best one I remember watching in living memory (mine at least).
BIG “thank you” to the Boss and his Little Helper for getting another season of informative analysis, passionate discussion and tipping up and running.
Assuming the Boss includes me in the tipping comp this year (I’ve just this minute logged in with cap in hand requesting same), I’m looking forward to hopefully doing a little better this year than last year.
Besides the Boss, I’m especially looking forward also to getting my weekly footy fix from the likes of JR’s WTF comedic genius, the Coach’s ever reliable thought provoking insights and stats and the undying passion of “a” for his beloved Cowboys and all the other good stuff from old friends and new.
Anyway, absolutely no predictions on who’s gonna finish where. All I do know for certain is that my beloved Chooks are gonna be pretty average this year. Everything goes around in cycles people. You get good and then you get not-so-good and then you get crap. Then you get a little better and then you get good again. And so the circle of life goes on…
Can’t expect too much this year from the Roosters when we lose the calibre of players we did. On top of that you have MP doing really foolish things over the break. Just goes to prove footballers are mere humans just like the rest of us. Doesn’t matter how much money you’re on or how famous you are or how priveliged you are, you’re simply another human and some humans are just plain thickheads. Has me beat why some people are just so stupid. I love my Roosters but not much sympathy (actually none now) for what MP did. Dude, you’ve disappointed me so much and giving us the standard “I’m sorry for what I did” spiel just don’t cut it!
OK, enough crying for now, let’s get this pony saddled up and start this cattle drive! Good luck to everyone involved in the footy tipping, either here or at work or wherever. Here’s hoping 2016 is a burster and we get to witness some great footy and exciting new talents emerge. Yeah, me too … “Bring back the Guru!”
P.S. If Emos are so non-conformist, how come they all look the same? Hmmm…

From the Courier Mail, October 6 2015
"Hunt pleaded guilty to a grade-two dangerous throw on Kane Linnett during Brisbane’s grand final loss to the Cowboys, which means he will be suspended for one match and have 62 carry-over points next season.
The Nines, in early February, can be counted as an NRL game for demerit points purposes, meaning the Broncos will select Hunt in their squad and replace him because he will be suspended."
What a total load of shit, a player can be suspended for a spear tackle and then get off by being named to play the stupid nines, but then somehow unavailable. Now he's sweet for Round 1. How does a trial game count anyway? Why don't they just allow team training sessions too.
Besides, to be fair on poor old Hunt, he could desperately use an extra couple of weeks catching practice.

I agree with Chook, the Ponies look better than the rest this year. But I think that the Panthers will show some promise and if not cruelled by injury should get into at least the eight of not the four. Thanks guys for showing the faith with the Eels, baby steps are needed and the first one is to make the eight this year and prove we can play to our potential. And on the Pearce farce, Joel and Todd have fallen the same way, the NRL needs to show some stones and give the same treatment to Mitchell.

To the best of my knowledge, no NRL player has ever been convicted of a crime against a woman, even the players that have admitted guilt have not been punished accordingly. That's an incredibly good record. Either our players are all saints and always have been, or else NRL players are seemingly untouchable in a courtroom when it comes to these matters. Noone will ever know enough to, without doubt, know which one, although one of these must be true.
