Finals - week two

North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

It would be presumptious to assume this weekend will give us the best weekend of football we'll see this season, but it may also be true. The last four games between these two sides have given us some of the best rugby league you are ever likely to see. These sides met in round four where the Broncos prevailed in Brisbane by a point. Then they met again in round 11 where the Cowboys prevailed in Townsville by a point. That round 11 game was game number 250 for Jonathan Thurston, and his effort to lift his side over the line in the final ten minutes sums up everything about the man as a player and a competitor. The Cowboys are short favourites on Friday...a little too short if you ask me. The Broncos were clinical in their disposal of the Storm in Melbourne in round 25, while the Cowboys struggled to get any sort of attack going throughout their loss to the purple machine last weekend. I'm hardly confident – we don't know what's happening with Jimmy the Jet (I'm assuming he won't be there) and that's a concern, but my biggest concern is goal-kicking. In what is likely to be a close game that could be the difference between winning and losing. I have more faith in Thurston handling the goal-kicking pressure over whoever puts their hand up for the Broncos (Kahu...probably). Note that when the Cowboys won by a point in round 11, the Broncos kicked just 1 of 3 conversions, while Thurston didn't miss a thing. They aren't meeting in a grand final again, but I'm glad we get to see these two sides one more time this season. The Broncos are $2.75 for a reason. Perhaps I'm mis-reading the formlines badly, but I'm with the visitors.

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Cowboys 26 defeated Broncos 20

Canberra Raiders vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

The two best backlines square off in what should be a points frenzy on Saturday night. Those named in jerseys 1 through 7 have scored 75 tries for the Raiders and 62 tries for the Panthers this season. On face value that looks like the Raiders have an edge in attack, but if you dig deeper you'll notice an important change that has taken place with the Panthers this season. At the start of the year I was critical of the Panthers in attack. In the first nine rounds of the year they were scoring virtually the same total every game - it didn't seem to matter who they were playing, they were stuck in a range between 12 and 23, and I pointed out (quite rightly) that it wasn't enough. If the Panthers wanted to make the top eight their attack needed to improve. It has. Things started to click when Coach Griffin made some key changes in key positions. Wallace got shifted out of the halves and into the number 9 jersey, Jamie Soward got shifted to London and James Segeyaro got shifted to Leeds. This current Panthers spine (Wallace, Cartwright, Cleary and Moylan) works, and the Panthers backline is singing on the back of it. They've scored 199 points in their last six outings and they're playing with a confidence that is both infectious and entertaining. The Raiders attack has been much the same, but while things changed for the better for the visitors, things have changed for the worse with the Raiders. Josh Hodgson is their best player and he's probably one of the five best in the NRL this season. He's been named, but I doubt he'll be there, and it would be even worse if they risked him and he pulled up after ten minutes. Blake Austin is a more likely inclusion, but he has been out of action for a while. So the Raiders face their most important game of the season thus far with line-up changes in key positions. Against most opponents you could back them to carry on, but not this opponent. This opponent is one of the few that can match the Raiders for points. The Raiders are a warm favourite and deserve to be at home, but it's the Black Cats I say. They are purring.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result - Raiders 22 defeated Panthers 12

...so time is a short for the Panthers because they won't have 5 NSW jerseys in the one team and stay under the salary cap for very long.

Let's face it, this isn't the Broncos with the non-exiistent salary cap of the early 90s - where playing the State team in normal cub games was allowed.

Good afternoon Tippers - very wet here today.
Not far to go until season's end.

Coach - Panthers had a very good season (better than good). I tipped them last night and also in my work tipping comp. Panthers can say they got a lot further than others in 2016. Cowboys got me home in the money one, and I live another day to fight another fight.
But Sharks will be fresh and had the week off (like Storm). They'll be doing it for Gal and Mick The Menace.

However, if Cowboys play the style they played on Friday night they might just crawl over the line. Like Penrith, they gave a good amount of start and in finals footy, one thing you don't want is to be playing catch-up.

As a new name I noticed that posted, The Thinker site is a guide for our registered tipsters, it is what one feels or thinks, but doesn't necessarily say, that if u r a gambling man, that it is going to be.
You outlay, you make the final decision - other pundits are only a guide of what they think. Just like newspaper journo's and former player match predictors.

Cheers folks and have a good week.

Big Pete

Curse my damned theories, I was hoping against hope it was wrong.
Panthers streak score of 9 was never good enough to go all the way.
Likewise Cowboys with a streak score of 10 shows as not good enough either.

Streak Theory says it's out of Melbourne, Sharks, and Canberra. So if Cowboys happen to make the Grand Final, the theory says they will lose. The Storm Raiders Prelim, would produce the Premier.

Just theories.

So it's Melbourne Cronulla grand final, just like I predicted. Tell me Coach what have I won ? Is it a date with Thinker ? Please tell me it's not a date with Thinker ! I mean no offence Thinker but ewwww ... :(

Coach I know you and I have crossed swords many times this season but there are a few clubs I would like to offer sincere congratulations to for what they have achieved.
1. Titans...not supposed to go anywhere.
2. Panthers...Exceeded beyond any tipsters expectations.
3. Sharks...can they win the big one?
4. Eels...despite adversity performed unbelievably.
5. Raiders... Ricky has finally learned how to coach.
Can't praise the Broncs as they were premiership favourites.
Cows & Storm still in there, so what do you say.
I would be very happy if you tempered your attack on the QLD teams.
We have;
1 Qld team.
1 ACT team
1 SYD team
1 VIC team
So I guess it makes it 75/25 over Sydney, if you want us willies to comment.

.
And Manly had a good shot despite major injuries all season.

No worries Mark but as long as you don't mean the old Over Achievement. Anyone who thinks that deserves to have less teeth.

Panthers deserved to be where they finished. Deserved to play finals.

mark ashford's picture

Coach, no mention of 'over achievement' in my comment. I missed a weeks games being on Fraser Island with my brother but my Sister-in-law (another Broncs tragic) said the Panthers were amazing in their game against the Dogs. She's a good judge so no problem.
The fact that both our teams went out on the same weekend speaks volumes. You won the early rounds, so I take my hat off.
Would love to have seen a Broncs/Panthers finals game but we will have to wait for next year.
I'm sure we will see it in 2017.
Keep the faith my friend!

Well said mark both your clubs were great, add the mighty sea eagles to make a surge next year as well .

Great weekend of footy comming up who will go through to the big dance should be great indeed.

The fortress eagle home of the iconic manly beach !!!!!!!!!

Coach Potato's picture

Well done to Canberra but wasn't it such a show of poor sportsmanship by having the crowd do the Viking Clap while Cleary was preparing to make his two conversions, one from each sideline.

Wasn't it just as great to see both kicks finish between the posts. Outstanding maturity vs Incredible immaturity.

The question is coach will junior follow senior to his new coaching job big chance????

Coach Potato's picture

No. It won't happen for the exact opposite reason to what you think.
Ivan realises the difficulty of having to be coach and father, and would prefer not to be both, unlike Bennett and his adopted heel dog, Darius.

Coach Potato's picture

Ivan's problem was his inability to drop players in poor form.
He gets a chance to do that weekly at the Dragons.
Dragons will fail if he doesn't and ultimately so will be, again.

christine's picture

Coach Penrith lost can you get over it & leave it alone now.

mark ashford's picture

Coach I just read your comment that Darrius Boyd is Wayne Bennetts "heel dog".
Just shows how shallow a person you are. Darrius had a terrible childhood and looked to Wayne as a father figure. A very sad story for Darrius.
Don't know if you have a father but I lost mine at a young age.
Your pathetic comment is just that and speaks volumes for the sort of person you are.

Coach Potato's picture

I'm not here to please the masses.
Don't like what you read, stop reading.

Coach Potato's picture

Doesn't excuse for a minute his shady off-field goings on.

mark ashford's picture

That Penrith loss really cut deep Coach.

Coach Potato's picture

Consecutive finals series, extra time losses would cut much deeper.
