Finals - week two

North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

It would be presumptious to assume this weekend will give us the best weekend of football we'll see this season, but it may also be true. The last four games between these two sides have given us some of the best rugby league you are ever likely to see. These sides met in round four where the Broncos prevailed in Brisbane by a point. Then they met again in round 11 where the Cowboys prevailed in Townsville by a point. That round 11 game was game number 250 for Jonathan Thurston, and his effort to lift his side over the line in the final ten minutes sums up everything about the man as a player and a competitor. The Cowboys are short favourites on Friday...a little too short if you ask me. The Broncos were clinical in their disposal of the Storm in Melbourne in round 25, while the Cowboys struggled to get any sort of attack going throughout their loss to the purple machine last weekend. I'm hardly confident – we don't know what's happening with Jimmy the Jet (I'm assuming he won't be there) and that's a concern, but my biggest concern is goal-kicking. In what is likely to be a close game that could be the difference between winning and losing. I have more faith in Thurston handling the goal-kicking pressure over whoever puts their hand up for the Broncos (Kahu...probably). Note that when the Cowboys won by a point in round 11, the Broncos kicked just 1 of 3 conversions, while Thurston didn't miss a thing. They aren't meeting in a grand final again, but I'm glad we get to see these two sides one more time this season. The Broncos are $2.75 for a reason. Perhaps I'm mis-reading the formlines badly, but I'm with the visitors.

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result - Cowboys 26 defeated Broncos 20

Canberra Raiders vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

The two best backlines square off in what should be a points frenzy on Saturday night. Those named in jerseys 1 through 7 have scored 75 tries for the Raiders and 62 tries for the Panthers this season. On face value that looks like the Raiders have an edge in attack, but if you dig deeper you'll notice an important change that has taken place with the Panthers this season. At the start of the year I was critical of the Panthers in attack. In the first nine rounds of the year they were scoring virtually the same total every game - it didn't seem to matter who they were playing, they were stuck in a range between 12 and 23, and I pointed out (quite rightly) that it wasn't enough. If the Panthers wanted to make the top eight their attack needed to improve. It has. Things started to click when Coach Griffin made some key changes in key positions. Wallace got shifted out of the halves and into the number 9 jersey, Jamie Soward got shifted to London and James Segeyaro got shifted to Leeds. This current Panthers spine (Wallace, Cartwright, Cleary and Moylan) works, and the Panthers backline is singing on the back of it. They've scored 199 points in their last six outings and they're playing with a confidence that is both infectious and entertaining. The Raiders attack has been much the same, but while things changed for the better for the visitors, things have changed for the worse with the Raiders. Josh Hodgson is their best player and he's probably one of the five best in the NRL this season. He's been named, but I doubt he'll be there, and it would be even worse if they risked him and he pulled up after ten minutes. Blake Austin is a more likely inclusion, but he has been out of action for a while. So the Raiders face their most important game of the season thus far with line-up changes in key positions. Against most opponents you could back them to carry on, but not this opponent. This opponent is one of the few that can match the Raiders for points. The Raiders are a warm favourite and deserve to be at home, but it's the Black Cats I say. They are purring.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result - Raiders 22 defeated Panthers 12

That's better.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Watching them play you need to wonder what's happening. Panthers are making plenty of ground.

GaryChesterUK's picture

Why are they not kicking on the last tackle, not working trying to run it

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not giving a possibility of seven tackles. Good tactic if you can hand it over 1m out.

Coach Potato's picture

Better still.

What do I know!

Baggy_Gee's picture

That was nice.

Wow the bunker got one right.

Send him off. Inside the 20. Get it out of the game.

That was not a strip. It's been turn over all game.

Not this time Panthers.
Very proud of how they gave it their all.
Never gave up.

My stoopid streak theory that only three teams could win it before Finals even started, Storm , Sharks, and Raiders. Didn't want to believe it. I guess I'm smarter than I ever thought.

Baggy_Gee's picture

The tries were all good, so all in all a good game.

Coach Potato's picture

Who's gonna be lying all over who next week?

Obviously Storm home ground advantage dictates that the Raiders will be the constant offenders in that area.

Coach Potato's picture

Doesn't feel fair.
Isn't anyone gonna give it to me?
I'm gonna feel cheated if people don't rip in.

Gee Baggy supporting your mate Coach and his Panthers despite all the shit he put on your Eels earlier this year. What's the go?

Coach your premiership winning/ Maroons slaying Panthers managed a paltry 12 points and were out played in every respect.

At least my Broncs gave the premiers a decent game and almost won it.

Coach Potato's picture

I gotta say there's no way that Croker had control of that ball over the line.

Would have been only 2 down last 10, not 8.

Coach Potato's picture

Plenty of calls didn't go their way, but yes Canberra were better.

2016 Penrith had it over Broncos in spades. Thats a bit of a silver lining.

Coach Potato's picture

Mark you showed no class disappearing from the internet after last night. What you say today doesn't restore anything.

Silence told this us everything.

Coach turns out ricky stuart was dynimo and just before our eyes the panthers had disappeared

He seemed to bounce back up each time.
I don't think he will.

Coach Potato's picture

The NRL was pretty Dynamo saying they had sacked Sutton after last week, but somehow returned the next !?! Treat fans like goldfish with second memories. Bloody amazing.

Coach Potato's picture

How was he allowed back in the box to make a other dud call?
Doesn't defy belief because nothing the NRL do, does.

Coach Potato's picture

A game away from a Prelim was not where all those who think they know something, had the Panthers finishing.

Pretty embarrassing the level of footy nous on this page.

Coach Potato's picture

Too late now, bit pain !willing injections need to be regarded by ASADA as performance enhancing.

Coach Potato's picture

f-ing spell corrector.
How do you turn the f-ing thing off.

Painkilling injections *

Coach Potato's picture

Give me the f-ing injection Hodgson.
I'm in more pain than you.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I called the game square, got frustrated with the strips, the trys were all clean except for that Crocker try. I have no really interest in backing a team in the finals. I'll just call it as I see it.

Coach Potato's picture

Thanks Baggy for clearing that up.
Integrity of reportimg needs to be owned by at least a coupleof contributors.

One Qld, one NSW,, one Vic, one ACT.
What's your percentage calculator say now, bunch o Wallies.

Coach you should be proud if your boys not many people picked them to go that far, I believe there execution let them down, where as against the dogs they controlled the ball a lot better, the raiders were very good but they will need to improve to knock the storm off in Melbourne they can do it but they must cut out the mistakes. great future for your panthers no shame in the loss.

Mark your broncos were gallant in defeat so close some critical errors at the end there cost them the match I feel , but still how could u be not proud of them a great contest won by a very strong North Queensland side they will take some beating the sharks won't be pushovers though.

Have a great Sunday everyone!!!!!!

The fortress eagle home of the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Fanti's picture

Worst tipster ever I went from two in front to two behind and losing competition following your tips in finals how can you say one week that team cannot beat anyone in top four and then say next week that they are unbeatable

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Fortress. A couple of silly errors cost the boys dearly but the Cowboys were pure class and deserved the win.

Coach I didn't know I needed your permission to be absent from this site in future I'll be sure and ask.

Coach Potato's picture

Work it out yourself then Michael Fanti.
Then when you get it wrong the only one you get to blame is yourself.

Idiot.

christine's picture

Coach I promise you I won't do bragging rights for a week I will just simply say I told you so ...

Coach Potato's picture

Penrith proved many wrong this year, no doubt yourself included.

No need to mention where you heard it.

Baggy_Gee's picture

That life Mark. Everyone slung so dung at the BOYS over the course of the year. It's to be expected when something like that comes out. I can guarantee that if a similar thing happened to the Broncos, the reaction would be exactly the same. Next year will be exciting though, a lot of the old guard gone, new exciting youngsters coming through the ranks. A mostly even field.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Mr. Fanti, thank you for your input, do you follow the games or just steal tips?

The Thinker's picture

Greetings Michael fanti. Thanks for following the tips. If you are two in front two weeks ago there are probably worse tipsters out there than me. For the record, I didn't say the panthers were unbeatable .... I said they were purring. I also said that it looked like Hodgson and Austin probably weren't playing... And they both did. Things can change between Wednesday and Saturday night. Panthers have had a good year. From memory they haven't beaten a top four side this season...that's where they fell short again and they've ended the season one game short of the last four teams. Nearly there...but not quite.

christine's picture

Coach yes panthers have had a good season there is no denying that & next year they will do even better with tamou joining them .

a's picture

So go Raiders and Cowboys next week

Coach Potato's picture

Whether they do better in 2017 or not who knows.

They made the Prelim in 2014
Almost won the Spoon 2015.
Finals week two 2016.

Tamou will push good players out next year.
Will have to see how that leaves them.
I have to say I don't think he was a big part of their success this year.
Does that mean he's over rated, over valued? Possibly. Will see.

One good thing the Panthers have done is re-introduce a style of play from a bygone era that will be copied by other teams. Rarely using block plays, and putting the ball through the hands. Just like the halcyon days.

Where Dragons, Storm, Souths, and Roosters put league on a path towards slow death with the non stop structured block plays, Penrith have revived the old style, and we thank them for that. In years to come, we will thank them.

Most teams only have a few years at the top and then they hit bottom.
