South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
Plenty of people are having a go at Greg Inglis after his field goal attempt against the Dragons, but he was just trying to make a point. Ow......my sides. No doubt GI will be keen to make amends after his mathematical miscalculations but he is, much like the value of a field goal, just one man. One other man, the great Terry Lamb, will be at the ground on Friday to remind Greg that he's not alone...even if it feels like it. The Bulldogs pack is the last pack of forwards you'd want to be facing without your best forward, and the Bunnies best forward is clearly Sam Burgess. Paul Carter is also an unlikely starter despite being named. It seems almost indecent to tip against the Bunnies over the Easter long weekend but I'm backing my barking dogs again. Can you buy a beer at the footy on Good Friday?
Verdict – Bulldogs by 2
Result - Bulldogs 42 defeated Rabbitohs 12
Brisbane Broncos vs North Queensland Cowboys – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium
It's pretty amazing that the Cowboys still have the same seventeen that won them the 2015 premiership. It's also pretty amazing that the same seventeen have been available to play every game so far this season...including this one. For those living on one of the outer planets of our solar system (Manly fans mostly) this game is a replay of the 2015 grand final which was, to be perfectly frank, a bloody good game of football. We can't possibly reach those dizzying heights again, but we can, to be perfectly frank, get bloody well near it. Don't forget that the last time these sides met at Suncorp was close to the high water mark for season 2015 (and yours truly got to sit right next to the Broncos bench for that game...ah sweet memories). Jack Reed is out on Friday night - not a bad idea as it was probably his defensive lapse in the grand final that let the Cowboys square things up in the final minute. Ben Hunt, on the other hand, must play through his demons. I'm a little bit surprised by the price on offer for the Cowboys. Surely this game is a toin coss, and no-one should give you $2.40 for heads. I'll take heads, and hope that the wise old heads of Thurston, Scott and company prevail.
Verdict – Cowboys by 1 (you heard me...by 1)
Result - Broncos 21 defeated Cowboys 20
Canberra Raiders vs Gold Coast Titans – Saturday afternoon – GIO Stadium
Whenever I see that the Raiders are a short-priced favourite I shudder - their capacity to lose when people expect them to win is a little bit legendary, and one of the main reasons Ricky Stuart is such a cranky little so-and-so. Yes they were good against the Panthers in round one, but since then they've beaten the Chooks by a point and drawn with the Knights...and that doesn't exactly read like strong form to me. The Titans haven't won away from home this year but their two wins at home were impressive enough. Kudos for halfback Ashley Taylor whose been in great form even though he still looks like he's 14 years old. I spruiked him at the start of the season but I didn't expect him to rise to the challenges of first grade so quickly. Losing Cherry-Evans and Sezer could prove to be a blessing in the end. The Titans at crazy and tempting odds to cause one of those early season upsets we get to see so often in this competition. Ricky Stuart to be a cranky so-and-so, another thing we get to see so often in this competition.
Verdict – Titans by 2
Result - Titans 24 defeated Raiders 20
Sydney Roosters vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium
In my 2016 season preview I was kinda joking when I said the Roosters might run last this year, but that joke isn't funny anymore. Absolutely nothing is going right for the tricolours this season. To make matters worse, the Sea Eagles appear to have finally found some form. They found themselves in a deep shark-infested hole on Monday night but they never panicked, pulled themselves out and ended up winning convincingly. I can't see Taupau lining up for the Sea Eagles but Jamie Buhrer returns to plug the gap. And make sure you have a good look at Eloni Vunakece for the Chooks when he comes off the bench - he's pretty funny looking.
Verdict – Sea Eagles by 10
Result - Sea Eagles 22 defeated Roosters 20
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Sunday afternoon – WIN Stadium
We had a few surprise winners in round three, and here's two of them. The Dragons and Panthers dragged themselves off the bottom rung of the ladder with gutsy victories over high-flying opponents on the top rung of the ladder. Clearly the Panthers have more points in their backline than the Dragons, and the team that scores the most points wins (just ask Greg Inglis). I have no idea what sort of weather we'll be playing in on Sunday afternoon, but we're in an El Nino pattern so I'm assuming sunshine. If it's wet I'd probably like the opportunity to pick again.
Verdict – Panthers by 2
Result - Dragons 14 defeated Panthers 12
New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Monday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
If Jesus truly rose on Easter Sunday you can be sure and certain he wasn't getting up to watch this. Take your kids fishing. Mow the lawn. Take your kids mowing. Anything but this.
Verdict – Warriors by default...and by 10
Result - Warriors 40 defeated Knights 18
Wests Tigers vs Parramatta Eels – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium
The Eels were my sneaky pick for a finals berth this season, but after the first game of season 2016 I decided I was wrong. Two more games later, and I'm starting to think I was wrong to think I was wrong, and that I may have been right all along (I haven't made that very clear). Foran and Norman works, the Fijian winger is racking up plenty of meat pies to shore up his citizenship status and that pack of Eels forwards is actually playing like a pack of forwards. Conversely, I'm concerned that the Tigers are about to replicate their performance in season 2015 - which started with so much promise but then wilted as the long campaign wore on. Farah returns, but whether he is an asset or a liability these days is currently up for discussion. I'm with the Eels, but this could prove to be one of the games of the round. If you only watch one NRL game on Monday afternoon make sure it's this one. Hopefully Jesus hasn't given up on the NRL after the Warriors/Knights debacle. With luck, he'll plonk himself on the couch, finish off the kids Easter eggs and wonder out loud what Andrew Voss did to upset all those hard heads at the Nine Network. God knows JC. God only knows.
Verdict – Eels by 10
Result - Eels 8 defeated Tigers 0
Cronulla Sharks vs Melbourne Storm – Monday night – Shark Park
Whether you like them or not the Storm are far and away the most consistent side in the NRL. While they haven't been at their best they are undefeated and have gradually improved with each game. Last weekend against the Warriors they completed 89% of their sets and I think their best is still in front of them. If the Storm got off to the start the Sharks had on Monday night against the Sea Eagles there is no way known they would have let that game slip, and that's what separates the purple machine from the also-rans..they know how to get the job done. Clearly the Sharks can win this game (the bookies certainly think so) but the overall head-to-head record (9 wins from 29 games) tells me this is a team the Sharkies don't like to play.
Verdict – Storm by 1
Result - Sharks 14 defeated Storm 6

Hey Coach
What do you think of the tackle by Martin Taupau on Jack Bird, he has to go for at least a month. That would be the biggest problem with his aggressive tackling style.
...... Not really sure how to answer because there wasn't much tackling involved. It was premeditated, dangerous, reckless, not to mention avoidable. It's 6 weeks on the sideline to me.
Getting cheap shots out of your game isn't anything to do with tackling style.

I loved watching this boy player with our magpie tigers. Was disappointed when he went to the seabeagles. I would be surprised if Trent used him/ advised him to be a Hopoate thug. I hope not. Unfortunately i think we will miss seeing him on the paddock for several weeks. Sad, and I hope Martin sees this comment.

But then the refs go overboard Coach, like Gavet getting put on report (with a penalty of course) for a perfectly legal tackle on Munster. It really gives me the shits when refs blow penalties just because someone gets hurt.

I know what you mean Andy. They give penalties for a slap, and then the worst they do is put someone on report.
17 weeks or whatever it was for Travis Burns on Martin Kennedy. Wasn't half as bad as Tupou's. You really cop it at the judiciary if you aren't a popular player, and you get off Scott free if you are one of the darlings. Revised sentence. 1-2 weeks bloody koala court.

I agree Coach, how can that shot on Bird only warrant 1 week out of the game. I bet Jack Bird won't play this week !!!!

Hi guys my tips for this week are:
Rabbitohs by 4- Rabbitohs to win because it'll be easter and they'll be fired up for this good Friday clash.
Cowboys by 2- Cowboys to win another close game against the Broncs.
Raiders by 10- Raiders to win here.
Roosters by 8- Roosters to get their first win this season here and plus, who likes Manly besides their fans?
Dragons by 8- The mighty Dragons to get their second win in a row here.
Warriors by 14- Warriors to get a big first win this season here.
Eels by 20- Eels to smash the Tigers in the big Easter Monday clash.
And finally... Sharks by 4- Sharks in a close one here.
Thanks guys and cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know how ice- skaters get their score, about 8 or 10 judges offer their own mark, top and bottom scores get canned, and they average the rest.
Why don't they bugger off the judiciary, gradings, and all that crap. Have a panel made of maybe 8 to 10 experts of the game. They all put in a secret vote of their suspension, top and bottom canned and average the rest. Pretend it's the Taupau case. Judges marks come in 2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 6, 8 , 6, 5, 3. 8 & 2 get canned. Average of the rest .....36/8 ..... 4.5. Round it down to 4 for a first offence. Round it up to 5 for the repeat offender. Coaches theory gives Taupau 5 weeks. No correspondence entered into. No appeals. You just get what you get.

Consider this. With coward punches headline news, was Taupau's effort anything short of that description? Bird definitely did not provoke, had no idea it was coming, and no way to defend. Isn't that the definition? Was the force of the hit equivalent to King hits that have killed? He's no weakling.
Hypothetically, let's say Taupau's identical act killed someone on the field last weekend. Would the suspension still only be one week judiciary? Would that be an appropriate outcome from the judiciary for someone who would likely be facing manslaughter charges and the other man sentenced to life in a coffin? Is this what they are waiting for to happen before they get tough on these ones.
Sure there's plenty of high hits every week we see, but a majority are a bit reflex, a bit careless, a slight error in timing.
Marty Taupau's effort fits none if these categories. The player's Union should appeal the one week ban, on behalf of all players, and request he be sent back to the judiciary for a fair dinkum judgement.

So lots remember Terry Lamb in 1992 against Newcastle down 12-10 and he goes for a field-goal, which he makes, and so a much more respectable scoreline of 12-11 the end score. If you don't remember here it is ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP4DKgoor5o
I reckon few though recall Terry Lamb, 1982 playing for Wests against the Bulldogs. It's the dying stages and yes again he pots a field goal. Wests were leading 12-11 at the time. Lamb makes it 13-11. I'm sure he got it wrong again. Thought it was all square. If you missed that one, here that one is ..

Johnny Ray, a month back you were confident 2016 was the Warriors year. Skip, dance and twerk back to the present and you are taking Newcastle to jag their first win in Auckland, playing on a likely wet track on a public holiday where there'll be a crowd against a team that has only won 1 game in Auckland since 2005, and whose opposition teams this year have already broken through the 100 point barrier in just 3 games. Is it fair to ask, what the hell are you doing?

The forward pass - by Coach Potato
To understand the forward pass, when it is truly forward and when it is not, one needs to understand some level of physics and that's often all a bit much for the average fan, player, commentator, and now Bunker.
To say that a ball caught in front of the mark where it was thrown is always a forward pass. That is not a 100% true statement. This circumstance is indeed often a true statement, but it can sometimes and often be false. Herein lies the difficulty. I'll try my best to explain.
First we need to understand that the ball itself after being passed carries energy. It carries energy mostly in the direction it's being thrown, but it also carries energy based on the speed and direction the player was running before releasing the ball. If a player is running at top speed goalpost to goalpost before throwing a long pass, that ball will still have forwards moving energy even though it was passed in a slightly backwards direction. If the player was running at 15kph, the ball will also possess some of that 15kph forward moving energy upon release. Think hypothetically of standing on top of the last carriage of a moving train and facing towards the side. The train maybe going at 80kph. Now imagine yourself throwing a footy as far as you can - 45 degrees back so yoh know its been thrown back. You would find that the forwards energy from the speed of the train would totally dominate even your fiercest throw. The footy would finish miles in front of the mark from where it was released. The old line about the ball floating towards, it's not really a fair description. It's more like a battle between this fowards energy and the direction that you released the ball.
The other extreme is the player standing still, moving only slowly, or sideways before passing. In these cases, it is generally fair to say that a ball caught in front of where the player passes the ball was a forward pass. This is because the ball had little or no forward moving energy at the point of release.
Watch this video, it's not a great comparison to footy. They are mostly interested in what happens after the ball hits the ground and loses its energy. We are interested in what it does through the air. What I want you to see is about the one minute mark of the video. They track the ball released with a red line. Then they show the ball released again. Although thrown almost sideways, the ball travels in sync at the same speed as the car !!!! The ball has forwards energy consistent with the speed of the carrier. See this and you will understand that a ball has forward moving energy and a player at speed can throw a truly backwards pass, and the catcher be in front of the initial release point.
I hope it opens the eyes of those think its just about marking where the ball was caught and released from.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VJzr_aSSE4
Submitted by Coach Potato on
... The other great thing to see is the release point, and the point where it touches the ground. The ball is thrown virtually sideways from the car but consistently the ball lands some 10m (or two of those yellow lines) past where the ball was release. The forward energy came from the speed of the car, not the direction of the throw.

You have to be the oldest 14 yr old I have ever seen Andy. Still having a laugh at the penalty for Tapou's hit, one week for a) a late hit b) a high hit c) a hit without the ball d) premeditated. We were annoyed about the nonsense with some players charged with touching the ref and others not, now this farce for a hit that is easily the equivalent of the shoulder charge that laid out Dean Young? Minimum 8 weeks.
Submitted by Tailspin on
Yes Coach, all those things are taken into consideration but even a blind man can see a blatant forward pass, as far as I new, the rule states that the ball must travel backwards, wow, how times have changed, now there is line balls, floaters, and all sorts of crap, are we playing league or aussie rules?? and I agree Baggy_ Gee, that hit on Bird was worth a hell of a lot more bench sitting time.
Submitted by Baggy_Gee on
Here are my tips, I have entered them, so it's all good.
Bulldogs - Sam Burgess is a great player and will be a big loss, and the Bulldogs were hindered by a forward pack not going forward. I think that they will miss Sam and allow the Bulldogs to get a roll on and make a game of it. I'm going with Bulldogs to get the roll on and win in a tight one.
Cowboys - Ben Hunt with a drop, the same team for the Cowboys, a huge 50/50 split of the crowd support. This is a great game, and I think that the Cowboys will prove that they are the better team.
Raiders - Because why the hell not. Being at home is always a boost for the Raiders, and the Titans are a rough team to get a read upon. I like the Raiders this year and they seem to be doing good things down there.
Sea Eagles - Roosters were and have been abysmal this year. 40-0 is a horrible result and Manly got up for a moral boosting win. Might be a dead cat bounce but I think that Manly can hold off a 3 loss Roosters.
Panthers - The Dragons will be high after a good win, so will the Panthers. A mostly full strength Bronco's, rates better with me than a broken Bunnies side in the rain. Think that the Panthers are back where they should be.
Warriors - Same as the Titans, Not sure that they are able to go 2 from 2 with good games. Warriors are bad, Knights are bad, flipping a mental coin to work out a winner is bad. Lets just go with the bad idea and back the Warriors.
Eels - Go the BOYS, we were better last week, edge defence was a hell of a lot better. That, the last try from the Dogs hurt, might have included a obstruction, but it was so so so so soft. It was a fatal clock off inside the last few minutes. But I my heart is saying we are going 3/4 with another good win.
Storm - Sharks should have been better against Manly last week, but they stalled, If the did that against the Storm they are going to get spanked, and a spanking I think they are about to receive.

Morning football fans,
I've woken up on north Stradbroke island which isn't a bad place to wake up.
Coach,
There was a tech company working on a device that could be implanted inside a football. The plan, as I understood it, was that the ball would light up like T20 cricket bails if passed forward.
I believe they grappled with two issues. Firstly, as you point out, a ball often travels forward even when passed backwards. Secondly, every pass in the other rugby code goes forward....and the lights would never go off.
Now.....where to catch a fish?

Thinker the point directly north of Point Look out has always seen good fishing for me when I've been over there. Enjoy your time off and may the fish be with you.

So what do you think is that a good idea to keep all the people who are not on the ladder for me to update the scores round after round
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Thinker, sounds like the device has a few bugs. Pie in the sky more like it. How the hell does the ball know which team has the ball, so which way is forwards and which way back??
There's really only one easy way to show a pass wasn't forward and you do see it sometimes ...
(From video training, it shows that the ball will initially travel forward at the same speed as the person passing it).. So if the player keeps running at the same speed after passing, as before he released the ball, and by doing so, maintains a similar gap ahead of the catcher, then regardless whether the catcher takes the ball at a point which was in front of where the ball was passed - the pass was thrown backwards. No question.

COACH I've gotta admire your analysis of forward passes. Can't in any way fault your thinking.
How do we fix it...is it possible to come up with a fool proof plan or just leave it with the touchies ?
I've got no idea.
After watching league for 40 years and seeing all the new innovations it seems to be the one thing we can't fix.
Anyway QLD will win SOO again...no problem. (just for fun)
THINKER if there aren't any fish at Point Lookout go back to Amity Point find the rock retaining wall (about 200 metres north of the boat ramp) and try for big Bream and Trevally.
Be aware though that heaps of car bodies, white goods etc have been dumped here over the years (to halt erosion) and you will lose a bit of gear.
Years ago I dived it and there was enough line, sinkers etc to outfit a couple of tackle shops.
Anyway good luck hope the fish are biting.
To all on this site hope your team wins this weekend and you have a happy and safe Easter!
cheers

Mark it's a bit too complicated for the NRL and whether they believe the world is round and stuff.
Basically they could use a Torpedo like world record tracking line at the pace the player is running when passing the ball. The tracking line continues on, whether the player stops or not, and the player would need to catch the ball somewhere before the line.
That's how something like a Bunker could assess a forward pass if they wanted to but chances are high they don't. They are happy to keep going with a call from a touchie through a series of video monitors that don't have the sound turned on.

Hi everyone,
Based on last week’s results, I have a guaranteed system for you. Just tip the opposite of what I tip. Easy? You betcha! Saved from absolute humiliation by the Knights and Raiders draw but if you take that out of the equation, I had a total wipeout! Newbie’s gotta get some “street cred” back somehow. Maybe it’s just a case of softly, softly, catchee monkey as they say. Seems sort of cosmic that both Newbie and his beloved Roosters are sitting on the bottom of their respective ladders. Oh well, as that old classic goes … “the only way is up, baby”. Check it …
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtKADQnjQmc
I reckon this should be the Roosters’ (and mine too) new “anthem” for this year! OK, let’s get into it…
Rabbitohs - based on current rankings for attack and defense you’d think the Fluffy Ones would win in a canter. Then again, without Big Sam the Bulldogs forward pack might cause some trouble. Nah, I’ll stick with the Rabbitohs.
Broncos - yeah, the Cowboys absolutely flogged my boys last week but methinks the Ponies are a tad better opposition than we were. Brisbane will want to bounce back from last week’s loss and they’re playing at Suncorp so it’s the Boys from the Bronx for me.
Raiders - might be a bit cold for the Titans down in Canberra this week. Raiders a bit too big and the Titans poor record so far this year with missed tackles has me leaning ever so slightly towards the Green Machine.
Roosters - I was reading on the NRL website about the “post-Cronulla factor and I’m hoping like hell that it holds true. That and my beautiful boys need to get some pride back after last week’s abysmal effort. Against my better judgement I find myself tipping them to win yet again. Go you mighty Roosters!
Panthers - I thought to myself “who had the more admirable win last week, was it the Dragons solid win against Souths or the Panthers upset win against the classy Brisbane?” The Dragons’ form seems a little confusing to me while the Panthers recent form stands up as not too bad. Hmm, might put my tick alongside the Panthers this week.
Newcastle - both of these clubs are travelling pretty ordinary and it’s hard to make up my mind on who to tip. Based solely on how they fought their way back last week to grab the draw, I’m tipping the Knights in this one.
Tigers - this has me scratching my head. The Tigers have been pretty good so far but their fade out last week has me worried. Eels on the other hand had a pretty ordinary start but then had some nice wins against the Cowboys and Dogs. What the hey, let’s go the Tigers.
Storm - think the Storm are playing better footy at the moment and feel fairly confident picking them here. Storm Troopers for me.
OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Have a great Easter break and see you all next week. Cheers.
P.S. Why does quicksand work so slowly? Hmmm…
