Round seven selections

Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Thursday night – Brookvale Oval

Green shoots are emerging at Brookvale - not on the actual field of course, I'm talking about the performance of the team. The last four rounds have seen victories over the Sharks, Roosters and Warriors and a narrow loss to the Rabbitohs. That's good, but it's not great, and it's a step down from the Manly of old. The win last week pleased me (at backable odds.....zing!) but they're facing another quick turnaround combined with the joys of international travel. Meanwhile the Eels are sitting third on the ladder, just behind two teams they've already played. That tells you the Eels have been facing stiffer opponents than most and they're holding their own. It's also worth noting that both these sides have played the Bulldogs this season - the Sea Eagles got flogged by the Dogs at Brookvale while the Eels flogged the Dogs at ANZ. Now it's never that simple in this competition and the Sea Eagles have improved since then, but I'm liking the look of that Eels spine and they're working behind a pack of performing (and under-rated) forwards. The Eels rarely walk away from Brookvale with two points, and I'd be much more confident if Tim Mannah were available, but it's the visitors for mine in what could be the game of the round.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result - Eels 22 defeated Sea Eagles 10

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While the big names at the Cowboys get plenty of accolades (and they should) it's worth stepping back occassionally and having a look at the performances of some of the trenchermen in the seventeen. Ethan Lowe doesn't get a lot of attention, but he's topping their tackle count, he's carting the ball up more than anyone else, he's breaking the line and he's racked up three tries. Not shabby at all. In fact, the Cowboys starting back-row have scored seven tries this season, and interchange forward Scott Bolton has a pair to boot. At first glance you'd expect the Rabbitohs attack to challenge the Cowboys more than the Dragons did two weeks ago, but the Bunnies looked pretty predictable with the ball last week (against the team running last). The Cowboys aren't running last, and they're back at home where they are undefeated and their cumulative point tallies stand at 96 points scored and just 14 points conceded. Twice they've held teams to zero. Give your love to a Cowboy man. He's gonna love you as hard as he can can.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Cowboys 44 defeated Rabbitohs 18

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The last time the Dragons had such an unsuccessful tour of Queensland was when Marc Hunter and his band were self-imploding in the late seventies - are you old enough (to get that reference)? Two games down and not a point to show for it. Ironically, Marc Hunter was scoring plenty in the seventies (heroin mostly). To be fair (to the football team...not Marc Hunter) their opponent this Saturday is a peg down from the Broncos and the Cowboys, but I can't help but think that the Dragons can't wait to get back to Sydney and prepare for ANZAC Day. Much like the band, the Dragons have added three kiwis to their line-up on Saturday (Marshall, Faifai Loa and Havili), but they'll be looking forward to ANZAC Day too. The Titans are beating the poor teams and competing against the good teams, and that's good enough for this. Take me to the April Sun at Cbus.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result - Dragons 19 defeated Titans 14

Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Westpac Stadium

A quick glance at the odds for this game and you'd be wondering why the bookmakers can't split these two. Take a second look and you'll notice that this is one of those games the Bulldogs take to New Zealand. Take a third look and you'll be back where you started, wondering why the bookmakers can't split these two. Perhaps it's the travel, with the Bulldogs backing up from a Monday night in Melbourne for a Saturday night in Wellington. I get that. I'm also pleased to see Lolohea getting a chance in the halves for the Warriors - I singled him out as a rising star at the start of the season and he's been stuck on a wing ever since. I'm looking forward to what his partnership with Johnson could deliver. Still..it's the Bulldogs surely. And besides, Ms Thinker wants the Dogs scoring plenty of tries so she can stare into those deep blue pools that are the eyes of Kerrod Holland. And it's good news for the Thinker on a Saturday night too. I can just sit back, watch a bit of footy, give Ms Thinker a second glass of wine during the last 20 minutes. Then I just have to wait for the final hooter and for Ms Thinker to pounce. You'd like the lights turned off darling? Fair enough.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Bulldogs 20

Brisbane Broncos vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

I've been to quite a few Broncos/Knights clashes over the years. I can recall a game in about 2007 when the Broncos cracked the 70 mark (I think they even slotted a field goal that game). I can also recall a golden point game in about 2004 when (I think) Kurt Gidley slotted the winning field goal. Sadly I won't be able to attend this game - there's a fair chance I'll still be pinned under Ms Thinker when they kick off, but if the Knights are good enough to take this game to golden point I'll be very surprised. I'm glad they got the win last week (even though I didn't tip them), and it was great to see 22,000+ at the game to support a team that are doing it pretty tough. They'll be doing it pretty tough on Saturday night too.

Verdict – Broncos by 31 (another field goal)

Result - Broncos 53 defeated Knights 0

Canberra Raiders vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

If the game on Thursday night doesn't deliver then this game can step up and give us a show. The Sunday afternoon timeslot can often bring out the best in the Raiders. Unfortunately it can also bring out the worst in the Sharks, but they've won three games in a row, and one of those was a Sunday afternoon game just last week. That was one courageous victory over the Titans too, losing three important players (Maloney, Lewis, Fifita) to injury during the 80 minutes. Lewis sits out this game but his replacement (Bukuya) is no slouch. That Maloney returns is most important, as this game is likely to be one of those 6 tries to 5 contests. In the end goalkicking may prove the difference. They need Maloney there slotting goals, because his opponent on the day (Croker) doesn't miss many either. The Raiders were poor last and there's every chance they'll bounce back at home, but I'll stick with the more consistent Sharks. Points by the brazillions in these two backlines and these two goalkickers....back the total points overs if the weather is fine and the track good.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sharks 40 defeated Raiders 16

Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

The Storm have settled into a win-loss, win-loss pattern at the moment. They lost last week, so my selection all but picks itself. Clearly they aren't playing at their best, but Cyclone Bellamy will be upgraded to a Category 4 system after that loss to the Bulldogs on Monday night. That should be enough to get them over the line here, particularly with the injury to Aaron Woods. That's four losses in a row for the Tigers - they've settled into a loss-loss, loss-loss pattern.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Storm 19 defeated Tigers 18

Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers – Monday night – Allianz Stadium

Attention shoppers...we have a red spot special in the store on Monday night. Head on up to our fresh meat section where, for one night only, you can get Panther meat for $1.70 a kilo. You heard that right shoppers...that's $1.70 about the Panthers which is incredible value. Note that we'll also be giving away the roast chickens on Monday night too. They were fresh in round six but they peaked (for that game) and are past their best. Note that Tyrone Peachey has been named on an extended bench for the big black cats. If he gets named in the seventeen I suggest you buy even more Panther. Shop responsibly.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result - Panthers 20 defeated Roosters 16

Wally Lewis - round seven selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • Sea Eagles vs EELS
  • COWBOYS vs Rabbitohs
  • TITANS vs Dragons
  • BULLDOGS vs Warriors
  • BRONCOS vs Knights
  • RAIDERS vs Sharks

The Thinker's picture

Apologies for the delays getting the page published for round seven folks. A key member of the Thinker household was out of action yesterday and last night with some unwellness - and by key member I mean me.

I'm on the mend....slowly. Feel free to add your tips and comments as you see fit. I'll have my previews and selections done today.

Dragons fanboy 2007's picture

All good Thinker I understand. Anyways my tips this week are:

Manly by 4- Manly I think at home in a close one.

Cowboys by 10- Cowboys will be too god at home here. Rabbitohs have Reynolds back but Cowboys will be too good I think and also the Rabbitohs haven't been in good form.

Dragons by 2- Dragons to bounce back after two horrific and heavy defeats to the two grand final teams last year. I think that we'll score some points and be good enough in defence to win.

Bulldogs by 13- The Warriors don't have a good record at other venues in New Zealand. It'll continue here. Bulldogs I think will be too strong and overpower the big Warriors pack.

Broncos by 34- Yes the Knights won last week which will give them a lot of confidence. But they're facing the Broncos and if they don't get it right, then it'll be a long time at the office for them. They need to muscle up in defence, complete their sets and score points if they're any chance, but I don't think that will happen. Broncos are a much classier team than the Knights.

Raiders by 13- Sharks have lost Lewis but they have a good replacement in Bukuya. But I think Raiders will bounce back and will be to good in attack for the Sharkies at home in what will be a high scoring game.

Storm by 14- It has gone from bad to worse for the Tigers with Woods out. I can't see them defeating the Storm with him out and with their form at the moment. Storm too classy.

Panthers by 6- Roosters have their tails up. But I think that Panthers will bounce back and edge out the Roosters here.

Good luck Thinker and the crew. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Here are my tips

Eels by 2 Yes Eels to continue good form they are in here

Cowboys by 8 Go Cowboys you are the best and you will win here for sure

Titans by 2 Dragons will improve and score points but Titans to win here

Bulldogs by 1 it will be a thriller here but Bulldogs to win

Broncos by 20 Broncos will kill the Knights here for sure

Raiders by 2 No Luke Lewis for the Sharks will spell out a L.O.S.S here

Strom by 8 Storm to continue Tigers misery here

Panthers by 8 Panthers to win here they are actually doing okay at the moment nearly beat the Cowboys Raiders Bulldogs and Dragons and beat the Broncos and Eels

Rob's picture

Agree with all your tips expect for Eels. Celebratory beers will be had at Brooky pub Thursday night!

Coach Potato's picture

Roosters coming off a confidence boosting win and Panthers coming off another heart breaker. Roosters a team that loves it when teams give them a sniff of a win. Panthers just the team to do that.

Now to meet at Alliance on a Monday night. Yes Panther fans will commute about an hour or so West after work, then get the Jersey on and head an hour back East into more traffic, all before 7pm. Make that 6:30 regards parking and the gate queue. God, you only finished work at 5pm in the city. Is this logistically possible?? More than likely not. You could travel straight from work except there's no Mufti Monday. Bottom line is the pitiful fortnightly Roosters crowd will outnumber Panthers fans 25/1. That makes the total Panther attendance only 100 strong. Scaredicat refs will blow a penalty whenever the crowd calls for one (that's practically every set out of their own end).

Would love them to win, but honestly think they have their work cut out. Wrong place, wrong time.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And you hit on why Monday/Thursday night football is such a poorly attended game. Who is willing to do all that just to be late home and wake up Tuesday wondering why you bothered. More Saturday games in the suburbs and family friendly venues so we can bring the game back to the masses.

Fortress eagle's picture

The mighty sea eagles starting to click they will relish the big crowd and to prove to foran he made a mistake leaving the great club I think the eagles are warming up week by week parra have peaked very early I expect the eagles to even climb higher if they match or get over the eels forwards they will then dominate in the backs the eels are. Good side but the eagles in my mind have more flair if we defend well and control the ball well I believe we wil win if we do win then we may see the emergence of a premership threat on paper we have the team to do a lot of damage the halves are underrated and have the talent to stand up tommorrow my tip the mighty eagles by 12. The rest. The broncos by a lot The sharks to edge out Canberra cowboys to edge souths. Panthers to thrash easts. Titans to beat the drag queens The warriors to give it to the dogs and the storm to edge tigers good luck everybody and go the might eagles

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

What in the name of Sweet Jeebus is going on? Newbie picked 5 winners last week and he’s all a quiver! Talk about putting pressure on himself to repeat the dose. D’oh! Not full of too much confidence but I’ll have another crack.

But first, can I ask a favour Boss?

Newbie won’t be here for Rounds 10 and 11. He’ll be enjoying himself in the LOS (Land Of Smiles). Just in case there’s some who might not know where that is, it’s a little place I like to frequent (one day it’ll be where I’ll be living) that goes by the name of Thailand. Yeah, chill out time for Newbie. Sooo looking forward to it I can tell ya. My soul needs recharging. To that end, seeing as I won’t be in Oz, I was wondering if I could wack my tips up here in the comments when I do my tips for Round 9 so that there’s a record of who I tipped. Is that possible Boss? Helper? It’d be great if you could see your way clear and do this for me. I’d be ever so grateful. Cheers.

OK, let’s get into it …

Eels - the Eels might just be too classy defense-wise for Manly. Brookie doesn’t seem like the fortress it once was. The Slippery Ones for me.

Cowboys - after last week’s shocker from Souths (thankfully) I’d be mad to tip ‘em. Yee-Hah! Ride ‘em Cowboys!

Titans - this was a toughie. Had to mull this one over for a good 3 minutes or so. Got a feeling Titans might crack it this week. They let me down last week, will they do it again? I’ll give them another chance.

Dogs - sorry JR but this is (or should be) a no-brainer. Woof-Woof!

Broncos - on paper and at Suncorp, you would think the Broncs are a moral in this one. Ponies first past the post here.

Raiders - another toughie. My head says the Sharkies but my gut says the Raiders. Man, this could go either way. Green Machine for me.

Storm - not really impressed with the Stormers of late. They’re not beating the better sides (apologies to those fans of the sides they have beaten so far) and that has me worried. Do I class the Tigers as one of the better sides or not? Not sure. What I do know is they’re without Aaron Woods and that’s enough for me to lean ever so slightly to the Storm.

Roosters - don’t wanna put the kibosh on my BBB (Beautiful Bondi Boys) winning another game by tipping them but seeing as they’ve finally won one, I might take a chance and get back on the wagon. The Roosters for me. Go you good things!

For what it’s worth (or not) regarding game schedules each week as alluded to by the Coach and Baggy … Newbie, being the “old school” guy he is, reckons the NRL should go back to the KISS principle and have 2 Friday night games and the rest of the games spread out over Saturday and Sunday. No Thursday or Monday games at all. The whiz-bang marketing wannabes sometimes over think things and get it completely wrong. And this coming from a bloke over in WA who never goes to a game. Sheesh, what would I know? Just thought I’d throw in my 2 cents worth. Peace!

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers.

P.S. What was the best thing before sliced bread? Hmmm…

Coach I'm surprised you tipped the Chooks, surprised but can't fault your logic.
Everytime I've tipped Panthers this year they lost and when I tipped them to lose they won.
So this week I think they will win so I went the opposite. That's my logic.
Bird is out so maybe the Dragons can salvage something from their QLD trips...gonna be close.
Newbie are you a married man? Hope all these trips to Thailand are for the right reasons, you know cheap living, cheap booze, cheap RE. If there's a Mrs Newbie does she like it as much as you?
Just kidding mate. Only been there once, a stopover on Thai Airlines that grew to 2 days due to plane problems. Amazing place..amazing people.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey Newbie, and others who wonder:

Have you ever stopped to think how ridiculous it sounds that a player can escape suspension for foul or dangerous play just by admitting he was guilty?

Surely the minimum suspension for a guilty plea should be a week. Minimum.

Analogy:

Judge: You are charged with two counts of shoplifting. How do you plead young man?

Defendant: I'm guilty, your Honour.

Judge: Well that's very honest of you. Of you go then.

Coach Potato's picture

Maybe egg on my face again no worries, but with Adam Reynolds back, the Souths team is so close to their Week 1 side, and Cowboy just scraped past a team that won't make the 8. How am I the only one brave enough to take the Rabbitohs? They were the last away team to win in Townsville.

BigPeteBx's picture

G'day Tipsters - sorry to hear (oops read) u r unwell Thinker.
I thought it was great weather where u r.
An interesting round this Round 7 is. Could be a couple of surprises (not upsets) and I'm going with them.
Mine for this week -
Sea Eagles - should be a cracker at Brookie. If their defence improves and holds, the backline will do the rest.
Cowboys
Titans
Bulldogs
Broncos
Raiders - if its a cold Sunday afternoon, look out Sharks.
Tigers - Leichhardt Oval is a graveyard like, Penrith Park to many.
Roosters

mark ashford's picture

Just watched the pre game interview with Kieran Foran
Question "was it a hard decision to leave Manly for the Eels"?
Bullshit answer HA HA HA HA all you had to say Kieran was the $1.2 mill a year took all the pain away.
Club loyalty is non-existant.....what a shame.

mark ashford's picture

Following on has anyone heard anything about the Eels salary cap issues?
Plenty of rumours etc anything concrete?

Coach Potato's picture

Decision within a fortnight and consensus is they will lose 10 points + whatever fine. Would put them back to either zero or minus 2.

How ironic that this team bleats on about how they should have been crowned 2009 Champions.

Coach Potato's picture

The standard of refereeing, in particular, video review, is the scurge of Rugby League.

Coach Potato's picture

Fair try after fair try disallowed. You mustn't have a TV left Baggy. I mean radio.

Baggy_Gee's picture

F$#king bullshit. This game is proof that the refs have an agenda and use that to determine the outcome. If that was a high shot on Steve mati then why wasn't the same call made when Jennings was tackled over the line.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And on the points fiasco, the Titans were in line to lose points, they cooperated and the points lose was waved. Of course at this point the NRL owned the Titans. We have cooperated with this rubbish and based on precident we should have nothing to worry about. And about time those clowns off field got a call right.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Great now another bloody KFC ad. Try for all money so why send it upstairs.

Coach Potato's picture

Your 2nd point raises the NRL conflict of interest. Someone else has finally agreed.

Fortress Sandcastle hey Eagle Boys.

Baggy_Gee's picture

There has to be questions raised about what the NRL has at stake. It is not for the betterment of the game, it seems to be based on headlines and t.v. deals.

Baggy_Gee's picture

The right result, but they made it hard for the BOYS to get the win. Odd calls and it seems they are trying to keep the Eels down by loses as they know that the point loss will cause rioting. Reading an exposure of the doping culture in cycling from a person inside it. His point is that everyone is on the edge of cheating because if your not, you end up at the back consistently. Apply that thinking to the NRL and we know several teams where money questions have to be asked/answered.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Doesn't KFC exist over the ditch, or is the zinger black and Australia only? Never considered the outside aus implications of the non stop push to eat chicken.

mark ashford's picture

Good win to the Eels no thanks to the refs. What a f--kin joke those disallowed trys. Manly were good but I hope this doesn't come back to hurt the Eels when points for and against are critical.
Refs and bunker a joke. This from a QLDer

Coach Potato's picture

Great move by Radradra, great little bit of sports science with what I call the stutter-stop-and-go.

The stutter-stop-and-go has scored him try after try. Why? Pretty simple. Because with those long tree trunk legs, noone is faster of a standing start. Once the defender decides to stop it's game over. As soon as Semi restarts, he's going to win the race every time. Lyon is no slouch, but off a standing start he is left clutching at some thin seaside air, just like any other mortal would be.

mark ashford's picture

Coach Semi may just be the best attacking RL player at the moment.
Big difference in size between him and Jamie Lyons. Don't think there's many who could have stopped him.
Congrats to all you Eels supporters....a well deserved win!

mark ashford's picture

No more posts I'm going to bed to read and eat a stack of peanut m&m's
good night all

Coach Potato's picture

Baggy, barring salary cap decisions, Parra are now equal first with Broncos in streak scores.

Shame it may end up requiring a super human effort to just make the eight, but they just may be able to do that.

Titans loss of 4 points was suspended and only to be imposed if they broke rules in the next 2 years. If Parra don't get a similar sentence then believe me, this will go before a magistrate.

Coach Potato's picture

I'm sure we would have heard Eagles beatin their chest if they'd won. Too bad you didn't hear any come back and concede the better team won. Typical.

Johnny Ray's picture

@Baggy_Gee We have KFC only our menu is completely different from what you guys get in Australia. Like no Quarter Pack Burger Boxes for example. It's also on average depending on what deal you decide to pick up $3 to $5 more expensive. But then the food in New Zealand is generally crap compared to Australia, don't know why that is ... :-S

Coach Potato's picture

Thats it. Warriors have an accumulation of bad KFC in their systems. Spent like last week's pay.

christine's picture

Baggy gee when tim manah returns does foran still stay as captain ?
