Round seven selections

Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Thursday night – Brookvale Oval

Green shoots are emerging at Brookvale - not on the actual field of course, I'm talking about the performance of the team. The last four rounds have seen victories over the Sharks, Roosters and Warriors and a narrow loss to the Rabbitohs. That's good, but it's not great, and it's a step down from the Manly of old. The win last week pleased me (at backable odds.....zing!) but they're facing another quick turnaround combined with the joys of international travel. Meanwhile the Eels are sitting third on the ladder, just behind two teams they've already played. That tells you the Eels have been facing stiffer opponents than most and they're holding their own. It's also worth noting that both these sides have played the Bulldogs this season - the Sea Eagles got flogged by the Dogs at Brookvale while the Eels flogged the Dogs at ANZ. Now it's never that simple in this competition and the Sea Eagles have improved since then, but I'm liking the look of that Eels spine and they're working behind a pack of performing (and under-rated) forwards. The Eels rarely walk away from Brookvale with two points, and I'd be much more confident if Tim Mannah were available, but it's the visitors for mine in what could be the game of the round.

Verdict – Eels by 4

Result - Eels 22 defeated Sea Eagles 10

North Queensland Cowboys vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

While the big names at the Cowboys get plenty of accolades (and they should) it's worth stepping back occassionally and having a look at the performances of some of the trenchermen in the seventeen. Ethan Lowe doesn't get a lot of attention, but he's topping their tackle count, he's carting the ball up more than anyone else, he's breaking the line and he's racked up three tries. Not shabby at all. In fact, the Cowboys starting back-row have scored seven tries this season, and interchange forward Scott Bolton has a pair to boot. At first glance you'd expect the Rabbitohs attack to challenge the Cowboys more than the Dragons did two weeks ago, but the Bunnies looked pretty predictable with the ball last week (against the team running last). The Cowboys aren't running last, and they're back at home where they are undefeated and their cumulative point tallies stand at 96 points scored and just 14 points conceded. Twice they've held teams to zero. Give your love to a Cowboy man. He's gonna love you as hard as he can can.

Verdict – Cowboys by 10

Result - Cowboys 44 defeated Rabbitohs 18

Gold Coast Titans vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

The last time the Dragons had such an unsuccessful tour of Queensland was when Marc Hunter and his band were self-imploding in the late seventies - are you old enough (to get that reference)? Two games down and not a point to show for it. Ironically, Marc Hunter was scoring plenty in the seventies (heroin mostly). To be fair (to the football team...not Marc Hunter) their opponent this Saturday is a peg down from the Broncos and the Cowboys, but I can't help but think that the Dragons can't wait to get back to Sydney and prepare for ANZAC Day. Much like the band, the Dragons have added three kiwis to their line-up on Saturday (Marshall, Faifai Loa and Havili), but they'll be looking forward to ANZAC Day too. The Titans are beating the poor teams and competing against the good teams, and that's good enough for this. Take me to the April Sun at Cbus.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result - Dragons 19 defeated Titans 14

Canterbury Bulldogs vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday night – Westpac Stadium

A quick glance at the odds for this game and you'd be wondering why the bookmakers can't split these two. Take a second look and you'll notice that this is one of those games the Bulldogs take to New Zealand. Take a third look and you'll be back where you started, wondering why the bookmakers can't split these two. Perhaps it's the travel, with the Bulldogs backing up from a Monday night in Melbourne for a Saturday night in Wellington. I get that. I'm also pleased to see Lolohea getting a chance in the halves for the Warriors - I singled him out as a rising star at the start of the season and he's been stuck on a wing ever since. I'm looking forward to what his partnership with Johnson could deliver. Still..it's the Bulldogs surely. And besides, Ms Thinker wants the Dogs scoring plenty of tries so she can stare into those deep blue pools that are the eyes of Kerrod Holland. And it's good news for the Thinker on a Saturday night too. I can just sit back, watch a bit of footy, give Ms Thinker a second glass of wine during the last 20 minutes. Then I just have to wait for the final hooter and for Ms Thinker to pounce. You'd like the lights turned off darling? Fair enough.

Verdict – Bulldogs by 4

Result - Warriors 24 defeated Bulldogs 20

Brisbane Broncos vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

I've been to quite a few Broncos/Knights clashes over the years. I can recall a game in about 2007 when the Broncos cracked the 70 mark (I think they even slotted a field goal that game). I can also recall a golden point game in about 2004 when (I think) Kurt Gidley slotted the winning field goal. Sadly I won't be able to attend this game - there's a fair chance I'll still be pinned under Ms Thinker when they kick off, but if the Knights are good enough to take this game to golden point I'll be very surprised. I'm glad they got the win last week (even though I didn't tip them), and it was great to see 22,000+ at the game to support a team that are doing it pretty tough. They'll be doing it pretty tough on Saturday night too.

Verdict – Broncos by 31 (another field goal)

Result - Broncos 53 defeated Knights 0

Canberra Raiders vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – GIO Stadium

If the game on Thursday night doesn't deliver then this game can step up and give us a show. The Sunday afternoon timeslot can often bring out the best in the Raiders. Unfortunately it can also bring out the worst in the Sharks, but they've won three games in a row, and one of those was a Sunday afternoon game just last week. That was one courageous victory over the Titans too, losing three important players (Maloney, Lewis, Fifita) to injury during the 80 minutes. Lewis sits out this game but his replacement (Bukuya) is no slouch. That Maloney returns is most important, as this game is likely to be one of those 6 tries to 5 contests. In the end goalkicking may prove the difference. They need Maloney there slotting goals, because his opponent on the day (Croker) doesn't miss many either. The Raiders were poor last and there's every chance they'll bounce back at home, but I'll stick with the more consistent Sharks. Points by the brazillions in these two backlines and these two goalkickers....back the total points overs if the weather is fine and the track good.

Verdict – Sharks by 2

Result - Sharks 40 defeated Raiders 16

Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

The Storm have settled into a win-loss, win-loss pattern at the moment. They lost last week, so my selection all but picks itself. Clearly they aren't playing at their best, but Cyclone Bellamy will be upgraded to a Category 4 system after that loss to the Bulldogs on Monday night. That should be enough to get them over the line here, particularly with the injury to Aaron Woods. That's four losses in a row for the Tigers - they've settled into a loss-loss, loss-loss pattern.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Storm 19 defeated Tigers 18

Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers – Monday night – Allianz Stadium

Attention shoppers...we have a red spot special in the store on Monday night. Head on up to our fresh meat section where, for one night only, you can get Panther meat for $1.70 a kilo. You heard that right shoppers...that's $1.70 about the Panthers which is incredible value. Note that we'll also be giving away the roast chickens on Monday night too. They were fresh in round six but they peaked (for that game) and are past their best. Note that Tyrone Peachey has been named on an extended bench for the big black cats. If he gets named in the seventeen I suggest you buy even more Panther. Shop responsibly.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result - Panthers 20 defeated Roosters 16

Wally Lewis - round seven selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • COWBOYS vs Rabbitohs
  • TITANS vs Dragons

Yes, Tim is the Club captain, Fraon lead on field. Sorry to hear that JR, KFC here is slow service, average to rubbish food, and still overpriced. I've heard that Hell's Pizza is a pretty damn good feed though.

newbie from perth's picture

I know this comment is not footy related but in answer to my friend Mark Ashford …

No (some may say thankfully) not married. Not the marrying kind. I like to think I was too fussy in my earlier years but some of my friends and relatives might disagree.

Yeah, I always go to LOS with the right intentions. As you said, cheap meals, accommodation, booze and massages! Cheap by our standards and it helps out their economy so everyone’s happy.

There’s no Mrs Newbie at the moment but the future Mrs Newbie is actually in Thailand as we speak. Haven’t met her yet and not sure where she lives but she is there! Yeah, sounds crazy I know but convinced she’s there somewhere waiting for me. Could meet up with her in a few weeks time or maybe next year, not sure. She’s there mate, no worries about that, just gotta find her!

Yeah, they are a wonderful people. No offense to anyone anywhere but in my personal opinion, they’re a much better mob than us Aussies. We’ve been ruined by our fast-paced modern day world and all its trappings. They live a much simpler type of life and are happy with what they have. Much like we did back in the 60’s. Geez I am definitely showing my age now aren’t I? Hey I was just a little kacker back then so not quite ready for the pine box yet. Anyway gotta go. It’s “Fat Friday” breakfast time over here in the West so I’ll head off and partake of a Potato Scallop, Spicy Chicken Strip and a Deep Fried Samosa. It’s my once-a-week treat. Every other day it’s salad so looking forward to it. Cheers.

P.S. Hope you enjoyed your Peanut M&M’s last night brother!

Adam Reynolds, State of Origin beckons. Much more than being able to tell your kids and grandkids. Much more than personal achievement. Much more than helping NSW get the trophy back. There's $150k at stake to play 3 games. Show tonight if you want any or all of these.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Parramatta eels best start in years good front row quality halves try scouring back line good solid team defence a real chance to challenge for the cup after plenty of disappointment might all be for nothing.
Makes you wonder how these breaches keep happening.

Coach Potato's picture

How ironic coming from a Bronco?

Coach Potato's picture

You will cringe Baggy, to learn that the investigation into salary cap breaches by the Broncos in 2014 came to an end "because" the Broncos failed to cooperate. That's right. The NRL concluded they couldn't prove anything because they would not cooperate with the investigation.

Much the same as the Sharks scandal came to an inconclusive end because the players allegedly involved, failed to cooperate.

Parra? Yes they cooperated. History shows all they had to do was say nothing.

Johnny Ray's picture

That's true (and there's no doubting from me dude that it is) that's terrible Coach. In other news I just discovered we have an Oporto's out here. Finally I find a place that has chicken salt fries. My life is at this moment complete ... ;-D

mark ashford's picture

Coach I'm watching the Cowboys. See what happens when a decent half takes on the line? Maybe Jamie Soward should watch some Cowboy games and give it a go.
NEWBIE thanks for the reply mate. I too am single. When you go over there looking for Mrs Newbie have a look around the plane. If you see a bloke wearing a Broncos jersey it may well be me!
Coach you leave me speechless about the Broncs and the cap. The thing you are referring to was an amount of $300 000 paid to an xplayer who was in an administration position and had since left the club. The 300 was repaid and the xplayer refused to cooperate as he was no longer employed by the club. So it was that xplayer not the club who refused to cooperate.
Bloody hell Coach just how much do you hate QLDers.

Coach Potato's picture

He did ok against the Broncos. Else we had a passenger and still beat you. Which one would you rather it be?

mark ashford's picture

Coach Panthers won by 1 point not a convincing win by anyone's imagination.
The article you sent was from the daily telegraph hardly an impartial forum considering all you NSW people think RL belongs to you.
Do you honestly think the NRL would let the Broncs off if there was anything to report? Look what happened to the Storm.
When was a NSW club last prosecuted?
Have the Roosters been innocent? or the Rabbits?
Think you need to take your blue glasses off.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Mark, last time the Ponies were in the news for salary cap breeches, the next head line read Andrew Gee quit. So who was that player, can Parra claim that Anthony "no knees" Watmough, is going to give his cash back and that will make it all go away? Rubbish, it is an unfortunate problem that has been dumped on us by previous coaches and administrators, as well as that digit poppin' fool with the Dogs. We are working with the people in power to right the wrongs as well as play the game of Football in the arena mandated, under the same rules that the Rabbits, Cowboys, Roosters, Bronco, Storm, Bulldogs play under.

Baggy_Gee's picture

If Matt Scott gets any time for that tackle on Greg Inglas it will be a travesty.

mark ashford's picture

Agree Baggy, don't know too many details of the Eel's alleged breach but hope they come out ok. They are playing great footy and don't deserve sanction from management f--kups.
Anyway you look at it it's 13 on 13 does a few extra bucks make supermen?
Scotty won't get rubbed out it was a nothing hit and deserves nothing.
Bit worried about Ingles he seems to go done easy these days with SOO around the corner...is he fit?
Good night all I've got another date with some M&M's

Baggy_Gee's picture

Enjoy the M&M's. That has to be the best point against the salary cap I have ever heard. Regardless of how much they are worth it is still 13 v. 13. It would erode the value of the top men, because even on $10 million a season, Manly have got bugger all game time out of Evans, and their wins have come with the cheapies running the side around. Smith, Ingles, Slater, make a superteam and your really only one injury away from being the same as the bottom of the barrel team with 1 superstar. Thanks for getting me to think of it that way Mark.

Coach Potato's picture

Eels will lose points as I said. Some newspaper called the Daily Telegraph reported it today and also said it would be announced next week. Will see how much this tablet is wrong again hey Mark?

How about The Australian newspaper? Are they full of scandalous rubbish, lies, and stuff they just made up during morning cuppas also?

I thought I would CrUnCh the numbers and pull up Parra's streak scores through the years, all the way back to 1947.

The table reads:
Year * Streak Score * Ladder Finish * Result

What does it all mean? Maybe not much in a couple of weeks. Parra's streak score is s healthy 5 after only 7 weeks. If they were to escape punishment, I could only predict a successful year. History shows ...

Apologies, I gave Parra one too many spoons, they came 2nd last in 1974 by a margin of 9 points differential. Balmain won the spoon of 74.

My god Parra has a collection of woodware though don't they? I'm wondering if the NRL will change their decision given Parra's great form. (No punishment if they still make it to the finals and win the comp right?). In 2010, the Storm lost the 8 points they had, and then barred from earning any more points for the rest of the season. If that's the case with Parra, there's more wood to add to their cupboard.

Baggy_Gee's picture

True it is a dismal amount of spoons we have, But at least we have several legitimate Primerships, (Sharks, Storm, we're looking at you.). It is very interesting that after a long run of spoons, (rebuilding) we have gone on to have a good few years. But I suspect that if you go through most teams there should be that trend of losing the old successful playing group and then getting a great team back through your juniors. Based on the Ricky years we should be headed for a few good competitive years. And you really don't want to know my thoughts on us playing for no points. Promote all the Wenty BOYS for a season of blooding.

Coach Potato's picture

Parra before this weekend were paying $25 to win the spoon. If you think the NRL's decision will be a guaranteed spoon, next Tuesday could be almost too late to get on.

Coach Potato's picture

This one is not from the Daily Telegraph. Whatever happens to Parra, they, Storm, Titans, Bulldogs, amdd others who have been fined or sanctioned over the years should be heavily agrieved that Broncos got away with this shit ..

The recently released annual report of the Broncos Leagues Club (BLC) admits $298,000 was used by the Broncos then football manager, Andrew Gee, for purposes it can't explain, while the NRL can't find any evidence it was used to make secret payments to players at the associated Broncos NRL club.

ASIC is not pursuing the matter, presumably because the money was repaid.

Note 19 of the financial statements in the annual report admits: "Over the past two financial years, funds from the Club were made available to, or on behalf of, Andrew Gee who, at the time, was a director of the Club. The amounts involved totalled $298,000. Those payments occurred without appropriate supporting documentation, without first obtaining member approval and without board approval. The full amount of $298,000 was repaid to the Club prior to the end of the financial year. The Club subsequently notified ASIC that there may, in the circumstances, be a reasonable basis to suspect that these transactions breached the Corporations Act. ASIC has since notified the Club that they will not be taking any further action.

The league community however is left wondering how the Broncos survived a salary cap bullet, while speculating that Gee, who resigned over the matter and refused to answer questions from the NRL, took one for the club.

Questions remain: (i) where did the money go? (ii) why is ASIC not interested? (iii) why are any of the BLC board who presided over the mess still in their positions? (iv) who repaid the $300K?

Cowboys are the best

Rocket Ryan's picture

Nobody wants to see this parra side end up with a similar outcome suffered by the storm that was brutal for the club and rugby league.

christine's picture

Yes but you can't have a rule for one team & not the other if they have breached the salary cap they should loose points .

Coach Potato's picture

What's the deterrent then? Fines aren't doing it. The problem is not the punishment. The problem is the Broncos never received theirs.

Coach Potato's picture

Hey JR, you took the Bulldogs against your Warriors even though Shaun Johnson has moved to #7. Are you sure?

Coach Potato's picture

Dear NRL ( Titans Pty Ltd) ,

There was only 12,000 at Cbus stadium for the game today.
One whole section behind the goalposts at one end was completely empty. The other three sides of the field were only 1/3 full.

Can you explain to me again the purpose of the stadium policy, which is denying loyal Rugby League clubs fans their right to see games at the rightful home ground? Because it's clear to me the policy is pointless if it doesn't attract any more people to watch live.

Making teams like Panthers, Manly, Sharks, Tigers, and Dragons play at larger away stadiums will not produce higher figures and only denies home ground advantage. C'mon NRL. Show some goodwill after years of being on the nose, years of perceived favouritism towards certain clubs. #LeaveHomeGroundsAlone.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I'm not one to try and side step the punishment for wrong doing, and we as a club should be prepared to cop it sweet, and I will, if the same rules Christine are wheeled out for all 16 clubs. You want me and the fan of Parramatta to swallow this load of crap softly and silently? Not likely, fair playing field you say? Lets look into the Brisbane matter, Let's re-open the Scott Prince house problems for the Titans, lets re-open every other file that has been swept under the rug and forgotten because that is making the playing field level! Let's look in to the Rabbits and double check their figures on how they got one of the more expensive lock forwards in RL back after he had his year off in Union? Lets see how when most teams let players go after a grand final win, the Cowboys are still together as a playing group? Cop the punishment if we're breaking the rules, sure, if the field is level. I will not let my team run uphill and into the wind against other teams who have been accused regularly of the same offence!

Coach Potato's picture

I can see "Bring Back Souths Sydney" style street protests at NRL HQ by roudy Parra fans regardless of the sentence handed down. They'll be shouting why not Broncos? why not Gold Coast? and how can it be that the G/C $225,000 fine can be paid for with a curious NRL grant to the club of a similar amount only a month before the sentence is handed down?

Broncos Cowboys and Eels all look the faviourites

Johnny Ray's picture

Should of factored in five day turn around. Not to take anything away from them but it really was only reason that Warriors won tonight. The Bulldogs beat themselves. I just hope when Parramatta Eels are stripped of their points the NRL remembers to take Auckland Nines trophy off them and gives it back to us. Bastards. I was at that game ... :-(

Johnny Ray's picture

Congratulations too Newbie on wedding. Hope it all works out for you. You deserved some happiness mate. It's like my Grandfather always said " You should always learn to leave toilet seat down, you never know when you're going meet the right woman ... " He also said that squirrels in park were secret KGB informants who learnt how to communicate with communists using hollowed out tree trunks, why do you think Stalin's offices were made of wood, so don't I know how much of that crazy guy's advice you're going want to take ... ;-D

Coach Potato's picture

Watched it again and again and can't work out how the Warriors first effort could be called forward. You can freeze frame it and see the ball was still caught a metre and a half behind where the pass was thrown. Imagine a Grand Final being decided by this level of officiating. Sorry, shouldn't talk too soon.

The mlghty broncos best defence in the league second week in a row zip against despite coach and baggy whinging about matters allready settled its happy times for us.

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket, you have players in your team you weren't entitled to buy. It's no wonder you have a good team.

Not quite good enough to be undefeated though. Panthers were too good for you.

The Thinker's picture

Broncos 53.....I was right - they did kick a field goal.

Even broken clocks get to be right twice a day.

Coach Potato's picture

Tony Archer, any chance of enlightening us all about the made up rule that allows the clock to stop with a minute to go?

Yesterday's Dragons game was a great example. A minute to go and time off because of an injured Titan player, I understand. That's all good. Time back on for Titans to take the penalty kick, but then immediately time back off again. Can you explain this rule on the run?
If the Dragons take excessively long to bring the ball back to kick-off thats different, but what team brings the ball back in zero seconds? Aren't the Dragons entitled to take a reasonable amount of time to do this?

Why, if a game is in the bag after a team scores late in the game, do I never see the clock being stopped here for the next kick-off ? Hmm?

Coach Potato's picture

PS Tony Archer

I also don't understand the recent rule on the run whereby the ref stops the shot clock during a scrum formation.

Can you explain the circumstance where a ref is allowed to overrule the shot clock? As much as I can make out, it's where the shot clock is running down, and refs don't want to be in the position if blowing a penalty.

Thanks for explaining these two. Else if I don't hear back, I can safely assume you don't have a credible response.

christine's picture

Baggy gee yes all clubs should be treated the same i'm not saying for one minute they shouldn't be but I am not responsible for what has happened in the past or the present or the future & what ever the nrl does is their business you & I don't get a say in any of it so there is no point getting annoyed over it .

Rocket Ryan's picture

The panthers did us coach as you often remind me big game monday night for them they need a win and they have the ability but the roosters will be ready

Coach Potato's picture

Yeah, I think it will be close and a dud call here or there, the refs continuing to ignore Jake Friend's forward passes, the difference.

Yes, I have the Panthers Broncos card in my pocket, and will use as often as I please.

Coach Potato's picture

You just gotta be fuckin joking Bunker. When in 108 years has elbow hitting the ground before the line not been a double movement ? Only just today. You're making history Bunker.

Now I know why you called it that name. There's pitchforks everywhere outside.

Coach Potato's picture

Tigers forward pass called back. Rightfully so. Storm forward pass freely let go. It really is laughable.

Johnny Ray's picture

Crap ! Storm wins game. I'm getting completely sick of this :-(

tigerholic's picture

Its days like this that I have trouble seeing the positive side of being a footy fan.

I know that the Tigers had their chance to kick the winning field goal but that forward pass with the touchy right next to it makes me a little jaded:(

Coach Potato's picture

I would guess maybe 20-30% of games these days end with the wrong team taking the two points.

Today's game at Leichhardt was definitely one of those.
#Lawrence should have had a penalty try. Easily first to the ball as it sat up like a tennis ball.
#Cronk's double movement.
#That forward pass.
