Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

Sometimes I repeat myself. Often times its because I'm a tad forgetful, but occassionally I repeat myself because I'm trying to make a bloody good point. Last week I mentioned the Dragons had scored just three tries in their last four hours of football. We're now up to 5 hours and 20 minutes, and they're still on three tries. Their last two away outings have yielded no tries at all, and here they are in another away game, against a team that recently beat the team that just beat the Dragons 36-0. The Broncos are yet to taste defeat at home this season, and I suspect I can repeat that statement in a weeks time.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result - Broncos 26 defeated Dragons 0

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

At the start of the season I would have highlighted this game in the schedule, but a lot can change in five weeks. The Eels/Raiders clash the next day looks more enticing, and I would never have said that five weeks ago. These sides actually met in round one when the Rabbitohs put the Chooks to the sword in a clinical display. Things have only gotten worse for the tricolours since then. Losing is a much harder habit to break than winning, and there's no reason to think they've cured their woes yet. To make matters worse, the Rabbitohs will take great delight in pinning some tailfeathers to the bottom of the ladder. No doubt the Chooks will try - there's every chance they'll lift and give us their best performance of the year thus far, but they shan't be winning. No they shan't.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result - Roosters 17 defeated Rabbitohs 10

Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Pirtek Stadium

I'm teetering here, and I'm very close to tipping the Raiders. Their form is tremendous, their record against the Eels is good and they have a better strike rate in daytime games. That's three good reasons to tip them, but here are my three reasons I'm not:

  1. Successive away games and a short turnaround from Monday night.
  2. Iosia Soliola is out and he give the Raiders some real punch in the middle third.
  3. Nathan Peats is back for the Eels, and if he can keep his body together long enough he'll be quite the footballer.

It seems odd to say this, but we could be looking at the game of the round. If you like a bet back the Raiders with the handicap start - if they don't win I don't think they'll lose by much.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result - Eels 36 defeated Raiders 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

The Warriors are a frustrating outfit at the worst of times, so I've made a bit of an effort to avoid watching them this season. I didn't think I was missing out on much, until I found out (just now) that the Warriors have an interchange player named 'Jazz'. That is outstanding, and some very brave parenting from someone out there. I don't know if Jazz is any good, but I have a copy of 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis...and I will listen to it, right after this game. For reasons I can't quite fathom the Warriors are a very short priced favourite here. They did beat the Roosters last week...just, but the Sea Eagles just beat the Roosters too. Granted the Sea Eagles are missing a few key personel, but they win a lot more games at Mt Smart Stadium than the Warriors. Trent Barrett has given his side a nice little freshen up leading into this game and I'm taking a punt that they'll respond positively.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Sea Eagles 34 defeated Warriors 18

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium

At the risk of upsetting our resident Coach Potato, the Panthers are lucky they aren't sitting on zero points right now. They deserved the wins they got, and they were against decent opposition, but if things didn't work out they could be hanging out with the Roosters (and after the Mitchell Pearce fiasco no-one wants to socialize with them). Now at the risk of pleasing our resident Coach Potato, the Panthers could also, with a little more luck, be entrenched in the top four. All their losses, like their wins, have been by narrow margins. I happen to think the Panthers are a team on the rise - Matt Moylan will improve each week, and Segeyaro and Whare should return in the next fortnight or so. Now at the risk of upsetting our resident Coach Potato yet again, I won't be tipping them here. The Cowboys are the form team in the NRL right now and, given the Panthers victories over the Broncos and Eels, they'll be preparing for a contest on Saturday night. If this game was mid-winter and smack-bang in the middle of the Origin series I could entertain a victory for the locals...but not right now. Here's a little stat for you - five games down and Jonathan Thurston is yet to make a single error this season. All those touches and all that running around like a terrier in defence...and not a single error. If he keeps this up he might end up being a pretty decent footballer one day.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result - Cowboys 23 defeated Panthers 18

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

As a man who likes to poke sticks at the Cronulla club from time to time it unnerves me a little to say this, but here goes - I like the look of this squad. They have the combination of tough, aggressive forwards, level-headed playmakers and exciting backs just about right. Can they actually bring the Shire their first premiership? I say no, but the rumblings have already started on the beaches. Ben Barba appears to have his zing back, and rugby league is a much better spectacle when the little men are zinging. As for the Titans, they've won more games than they've lost - not too bad for the team most assumed would run last. This challenge might be just beyond them - Cameron Cullen makes his NRL debut in the halves and this won't be the easiest place to start your first grade career. There are a few other notable inclusions for the visitors (David Shillington, William Zillman), and they'll give this a good shake. The Sharks to prevail, shaken but not stirred. The name is Bird...Jack Bird.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Sharks 25 defeated Titans 20

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

If the Knights repeat that effort from last week they beat the Tigers on Sunday, particularly with the support of a home crowd. I do have a rich history of backing the Knights in these Sunday afternoon fixtures in the Hunter, and it's a strategy that has served me well over the years. But, and there's always a but, this is very young Newcastle squad, and its quite the challenge to back up after a strong effort and produce another strong effort. I suspect they'll be below their best this weekend, and that's a level that doesn't win games in the NRL. The Tigers have lost three games in a row, but they've been competitive. Narrow losses to the Sharks and the Eels is better form than it used to be. Curtis Sironen returns to an otherwise settled Tigers line-up. You want to have points in you to win these afternoon fixtures, and the Tigers have scored 114 in five games - not bad given that they won game where they didn't score at all.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result - Knights 18 defeated Tigers 16

Melbourne Storm vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Monday night – AAMI Park

There are four teams below the Storm on the ladder with a better points differential this season, including the Bulldogs. Such is the nature of the purple machine, particularly early in the season where they do enough to keep on winning and not much more. They aren't at their best, but they've won four from five and are undefeated at home. Their only loss came at the hands of the Sharks on a Monday night in Cronulla, and even then they only conceded 14 points. This is a difficult team to tip against, even when you know they aren't firing on all cylinders. While the Storm are a metronome, the Bulldogs remain a riddle wrapped inside an enigma. Just when you convince yourself they're a premiership force (racking up 42 points against the Bunnies) they underperform a week later in a game where I had them pegged as a lock. I'll stick with what I know, and I know the Storm. I don't expect it to be pretty, but they'll get the job done. I've a feeling this game will be the lowest scoring for the round - adjust your betting accordingly.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Bulldogs 18 defeated Storm 12

Wally Lewis - round six selections (in bold)

Where's Penrith Parra Tigers and Dogs in the proposal?

newbie from perth's picture

At last! Thank (god, the universe, the source, whoever) we’ve finally won a game. You bloody bewdy!

More than happy to lose the tipping point tonight. Awesome effort from my Beautiful Boys. Dylan Napa is my new favourite. Absolutely loved his first half. Big boy dishing out big hits.

Newbie is happy again. Phew …

Coach Potato's picture

Why am I so sick of early weekend footy? It's the Rabbits. They are clogging the early weekend footy with their patheticly boring unamaginative unoriginal predictable style. Look what we've endured since Round 4, and what's to come ...

Round 4 Friday v Bulldogs
Round 5 Thursday v Manly
Round 6 Friday v Roosters
Round 7 Friday v Broncos
Round 8 Friday v Cowboys
Round 9 Thursday v Tigers
Round 10 Friday v Parra
Round 11 Thursday v St George

Bloody torture.

Leon's picture

Cheers Tailspin
Well I missed tips for 2 games this round, broncos i wouldve picked but the bunnys didnt do as wel as I expected, and now ive just missed half of eels raiders game. I wouldve picked eels but none of that counts now obviously.
So EAGLES to beat Warriors
COWBOYS to beat Panthers
SHARKS to beat Titans
TIGERS to beat Knights
STORM to beat Dogs

christine's picture

Let me be the first to say it Canberra played like garbage they were out played by eels & eels deserve the win .

christine's picture

Coach souths don't get a say in the draw either does any other team .

mark ashford's picture

Don't like to agree with you (again) Coach but it's the same as last couple years when all we got was Broncs on a Friday night.
I don't have cable so rely on free to air and would love to see some of the less highly regarded teams play.
Is it true that #9 sets who will play? I know they pay a lot for rights but surely that must p--s off a lot of fans.
Souths looked tired and did the Burgess boys play???
Dylan Napa's tackling style is not far from a shoulder charge. Wraps his other arm around after the hit.
I know he's a QLDer was he one of the offenders from the drinking session after emerging origin QLDers were banned for 12 months? by our coach? In hindsight maybe not such a good idea.

Coach Potato's picture

No you're right Christine, Souths don't make the draw. Where you got that idea I'm not sure, but someone or group of someones in the NRL do make the draw, and it's clearly not fair. Dragons had their years of Friday nights, as has Broncos and Souths - and it continues. Is it purely coincidence that teams who continually get to put their feet up Saturday and Sunday has resulted in Grand Final appearances and Premierships? I think it's a fairly curious relationship at minimum.

mark ashford's picture

Coach yes the NRL makes the draw but I'm sure it's done in conjunction with #9.
Better rating teams (bigger audiences) dictate who gets what time slots.

Coach Potato's picture

Ratings? You obviously don't mean NSW ratings because footy fans watch Friday night, just the same, whoever is playing. It's only the Queenslanders who tune out when a Queensland team is not playing.

Thinker has previously confirmed this as true.
So here we are, bowing to the audience who only care about their own. It's truly ironic that the arseholes of the league, end up getting the world.

mark ashford's picture

Coach, you don't think #9 don't take the NSW audience into account?
Broncos game regularly rate higher than any other.
Rather than blame QLDers maybe you should look in your own back yard.
You people from NSW think you own Rugby League and bleat like babies when you don't get your own way.
It's NRL and the last time I looked the N stood for National not NSW.

Coach Potato's picture

And even more ironic that St George and Souths aren't Queensland teams. When NSW ratings are rock solid no matter who plays, and there are 16 teams to choose from, we just don't see them.

Fairness (meaning equality) in scheduling of games through a season needs to be addressed. The NRL needs to try a bit harder to show itself as above board, and not bowing to State League factions, and movie star owned teams.

Anyone ever heard any more of the Independent Tribunal? Was I just dreaming there was such a thing? I must have been.

Coach Potato's picture

When it all comes down to it, what does money have to do with running a fair competition?

If 4Billion people tune in to watch the 100m mens athletics Final, but only a fraction of that watch the ladies doubles badminton Final that doesn't mean we get rid of badminton, and have more 100m events.
Ratings should have no influence on how the game was run. If I was in charge, money would never undermine the integrity of the game.

mark ashford's picture

I guess Coach that when the broncs, rabbits or dragons are playing there is another team on the field?
Maybe balances out but I agree (what again?) I would love to see more other teams making up the free to air games.
I assume you have cable so you can see all games (maybe not live) but again a Titans/Warriors or whatever would be welcome on free to air.
QLDers love their footy and would watch any game on free to air.

tigerholic's picture

I have always hated Manly, especially Jamie Lyon. The Warriors diid't play their best footy but every decision went to the Manly grubs. If Many were a team full of NSW players, I would still hate em.

I had a T-Shirt years ago that said, "I follow two teams, Balmain and who ever's playing Manly.

This bullshit rule about throwing punches needs to be changed, the refs can take a lot of responsibility for the frustration of the players, let them throw a few, Nate Miles needed to be taken down a level, what a pussy to stay down to get that penalty late in the game, there was nothing in it.

That sort of crap tonight spoils the game, the refs "f----d it but next week they will be back again, do the refs review their performance or do they just pat each other on the back no matter how bad they perform.

Well done to those that tipped the Manly grubs.

Evenin M A - nice to get a reply or inclusion.
I'm a newy with Thinkers Pool & Posts.
Where might you be from mate?
The Sandstone Curtain is The Great Dividing Range, not a lot know it as that. I'm an ex Raily but still employed with NSW Govt Dept.
The Bx in case you may not have worked it out, is Vroom vroom V8's that run around another mountain (once a volcano but more like in T-Rex days). Cheers keep in touch - Big Pete in Bx Country (aka Gods Country).

BigPeteBx's picture

I know where u r coming from Coach, but Media today runs the NRL.
They dictate if kick-off times (televised game/s) are delayed 5mins because they are waiting for someone to get back from the powder room or from showering the crowd from the field.
Money does rule sport today, I've said it before in other "chats" I've had in other avenues. I still administrate in sport and coach for over 40years in several codes. How the hell can the USA Mens Basketball team be bloody amateur because most of the team are full time NBA Professionals on big gazonkers ($'s). I don't have cable/pay tv and agree with free to air tv. Who minds adverts, they have to get some airplay as well, for dollars they cough up. Gives us viewers a chance to go get a beer or make a cuppa, if you have cold Winters, like we do here.
Plus a lot of Olympic sport's futures are decided by player participating ratios. They got rid of Softball like that. About the only sport I haven't seen included to this day is Darts & Pocket Billiards.
There are times I felt that the NRL Video Ref would have qualified to play Pocket Billiards.
Cheers and keep well - Big Pete in Bx (West of The Sandstone Curtain)

mark ashford's picture

Hells Bells Big Pete I'm still no wiser. The Great Dividing Range runs from near Cairns down most of the east coast. I'm assuming as you're a NSW Govt employee that your somewhere in NSW but I'm sorry mate I don't know the Bx (not being a big motor sports fan)
Perhaps a country or coastal town nearby would help.
Me, I'm semi retired on Bribie Island just a bit north of Brisbane and a Broncos fan. Who do you support mate?
Agree sport today is controlled by money but what can you do?
Darts in the UK can be big money but pocket billiards....well I guess it's a bit hard to get a camera in there so you're probably right.
Keep posting and welcome!

Warriors ! Oh man I don' know how you guys are after your team loses a game that were expected to win but me I get as angry as guy in Liverpool trying to learn to how to play guitar but knowing full well that he will never be as good as The Beatles : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DbUPjEbIvA :-(

Well done Cowboys.
Bad luck brave Panthers.

Forget about people who know nothing except table positions. Regardless of where you sit in the table in only 6 weeks you have made a statement against the Bulldogs, against the Broncos, against the Eels, against the Cowboys. Chin up it'll come together and when it does, these teams are in your sights.

Coach Potato's picture

Coach Griffin, can we give Te Maire Martin back number 19? Against the Broncos he came off the bench and starred.

Three games since, he's worn number 6, and hardly been sighted. How is that possible? Number 6 is your team's best attacking player. How & Why the hell is he not being made the centre of your plays ? Who's your real halfback Soward or Wallace? Because the other one is out of position constantly. Te Maire is number 6. Let him play. He's the silkiest player I've seen since Lockyer came onto the scene. Keep treating him like a 1st year apprentice and another team would love him to wear their number 6.

Coach Potato's picture

C'mon Cowboys. Not much bloody fun ribbing myself over a loss. I knew you'd be church friggin mouses if you'd lost, but not if you won.

BigPeteBx's picture

Sorry MA, u wouldnt credit it. I typed a reply to you but wasnt signed in and lost the lot.
I live in Bathurst and it was abbreviated Bx over many years. So Bribie Island forms part of Nth Stradbroke does it not. I've been there twice but many years ago now - actually back in my younger days.
Had some friends lived on The Broadwater at Southport/Labrador where Johnny Satts had The Queens Hotel. That was where I met him, as we stayed near The Grand Hotel, but someone seems to have told me The Grand is gone these days. I have an ex-NSW Raily friend who lives at Runaway Bay.
I support the team that Everyone Loves to Hate. I have done since school days. Cant be helped I guess, but Ken Arko was a very shrewed businessman in getting Sea Eagles to where they are today. Bob Fulton did and still does a lot of work for the club. That sort of business was well before NRL became known and was just an entity of ARL. All clubs are big business these days and they wouldn't survive without the injection of funds. Salary Cap is a bit of a farce as NRL are losing very good long serving players because of it. All it is to NRL is farming out of older players who have given divine service to their adopted "parent" club.
You know mate, this chat reminds me of a fellow I met at Silvertails site a couple of years ago. It got to more than just NRL and we exchanged otherwise. We followed the same EPL and A-League clubs and our birthdays were both in May. Small world ay!
I'm not in your final Tipping Comp, so I best restrict my posts.
Cheers mate and keep in touch - it is your choice, especially if u r a Manly hater hahahahaha..............

Sammills's picture

Nice trip to pepper stadium tonight. Thumbs up to Cowboys showing real premier quality holding out a good panthers outfit. There be stronger with Segearo back but unfortunately they will still have that Enigma Jamie Soward.

Sammills's picture

Sorry coach just saw ur comment. Panthers impressed me but soward decision making at times will always haunt u. Great one minute then just plan brain dead the next.

Tailspin's picture

Hey Coach, bad luck mate, but like I said, Cowboys just too good.
bloody good game though, good completion sets by both sides but as usual, cowboys giving away too many penalties. I like the look of the panthers and their 60 billion dollar new club house and definitely rate them in the top 8 by end of year.

Tailspin's picture

Hey Johnny Ray, I don't think I will back the bloody Warriors again, they were woeful, and that's being nice, with the blokes they have on paper you would think by now they would be showing us some great stuff, but instead they are showing us crap. Maybe we are due for our first coach sacking for the year :)

Coach Potato's picture

Sammills and Tailspin, glad you enjoyed the Panthers experience, and went home chuffed instead of huffed.

I was in Townsville for the golden try game in 2003, and had the same trip home in reverse. That night I thought I was watching a Grand Final preview. I was wrong as is not unusual - although half-right. Last night I started getting the same feeling. No doubt I am wrong again - although wonder if I might be at least half-right again?

Lots of people have the opinion Panthers 2016 are a basement team, and so must be pleased with their expert eye because that's where they currently sit.

christine's picture

I 'm going to get a bad score this week already down three games it's not going to be good but you don't gain anything without trying to .

BigPeteBx's picture

I know the feeling Christine.
It happens to me in UK EPL, I was leading the comp by 900 and now have all the ones below me within 100 points with 5 rounds to go.
It helps a big deal when the Joker comes up for you, as it doubles your points for that one game. I'm new about The Thinker site and not a member of your final Tipping Comp, but I register my predictions for each round (except 1st Round, as I was waiting to see if I was accepted) for some fun. Great to see a lady keeping the boys honest.
Cheers - Big Pete (South of the border and West of The Sandstone Curtain in Western NSW)

Tailspin's picture

Early days coach, Panthers biggest problem over the last few years is injuries, so if they can keep going the way they are now, even though they still have a fair few injuries, they will be up there and playing good footy, unlike those bloody warriors.

Tailspin's picture

Hey Thinker, good call on the Eagles game, but if you use your philosophy, wont the Dogs beat the storm as they have a good win record there.

Coach Potato's picture

How do we explain 2014 then Tailspin, we were decimated by injury all year, and if not for the NRL thinking money is everything, and scheduling the prelim to be plkayed at the wrong ground, we would have played the Grand Final v Souths - and who knows we might have won.

a's picture

Cowboys are the best way better than Panthers right coach

christine's picture

"a" don't provoke coach he's never going to admit to that .

Coach Potato's picture

I can't argue with the scoreboard.

No team is way better than Panthers. Panthers have shown enough ability to beat any team on their night.

Broncos had their best team and got done. Cowboys had their Grand Final side and scraped home, while Panthers are still waiting for Segeyaro and Whare to return.

Have yourself on all you like, noone's stopping you.

christine's picture

This is my second worst week for tipping 3/7 & the next game I've taken bulldogs to beat storm at AAMI ,it could get worse yet .

Winning & Losing Streak Scores.
----------------------------------------

Very early days, but even after just 6 weeks, the Streak Score theory is quite telling and a pretty accurate guide to in-form and out of form teams. Tomorrow's game ain't gonna change things too much.

Best Winning Streak Scores (sum of three longest winning streaks)
1. Broncos 5
2. Storm 3 (would move to 5 with a win, but stay on 3 with a loss)
2. Parramatta 3
2. Cronulla 3

Worst Losing Streaks (sum of three longest losing streaks)
1. Roosters 5
2. Tigers 4
2. Knights 4
2. Dragons 4

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Coach, as u r a Penrith supporter and I know a few that came from my way and played with them. Dont forget also that Penrith Park and all other names to follow was and will always be known as The Graveyard.
Many high riding teams fell from grace when they travelled to Penrith.
We have a sister club of Panthers at Bathurst (Bathurst Panthers), but why I really responded to this "hit" was, you will most lilely also recall back in 1974 The Amco Cup Final - Western Division v's Penrith.
There is a book that was written by Ian Heads called "The Night The Music Died". Great reading for any rugby league and sporting tragic. Not costly to buy and I purchased mine at BIG W and had some of the team members, that were present at the launch and signing session, do the honours for me. Anyway, if you knew about it, no probs - my community service done for another day.
Cheers - Big Pete in Bx

Coach Potato's picture

No worries BigPeteBx. I know Bathurst Panthers. For quite a small club, you would be surprised to know it's bigger than the North Queensland Cowboys League's Club. What an embarrassment that place is. The house full sign went up on Grand Final day and they had managed to squeeze 100 people in the door. Feel free to comment on the comparison to Panthers, Tailspin and Sammills or anyone else.

Cowboys will work work work to win back to back premries

Coach Potato's picture

Just to remind Sammills, Soward was to the 2010 Dragons premiership, what Thurston was to Cowboys 2015. Neither teams would have won without them.

Also to remind, Thurston was outgunned against Beniji in 2005 G/F, and subsequently didn't get his team too damn far in the following 5 years himself.
2006 9th
2007 Prelim
2008 15th
2009 12th
2010 15th

Soward's 5 years since Grand Final 2010
Dragons 2011 5th
2012 9th
2013 14th
Panthers 2014 - Prelim
2015 - 11th

Doesn't look too different to me.

Steel Panther's picture

@ Tigerholic & Tailspin

Lads, the Warriors were simply their awful best on Saturday night. Let's be honest Manly aren't the side they once were and haven't exactly been setting the world on fire to date in 2016. Warriors had some momentum with back to back wins and a home advantage but got out played. Here the media are talking about the decisions that went against them but you can't blame the refs for under 5s type handling and lack of discipline. The team are an embarrassment to the die hard fans that turn up every week!!

Rant over......

Coach Potato's picture

Steel Panther. Isaac Luke. He's got influence. Bad influence. He didn't exactly leave Souths. I have a feeling he was booted for laziness. Warriors already had some lazy bones players on the field and in training, but Isaac (in my opinion) has cemented that culture.

Drop the lazy ones for ones with half the ability but who are dedicated and will train all day. To me, that's the current answer to the team that many on paper couldn't see missing the top 4.

Tailspin's picture

I couldn't agree more Coach and Steel Panther, the warriors are letting the fans down big time and Isaac Luke is playing shit/lazy to be fair. Anyway it had to happen I guess, Nights got up, eagles got up and roosters got up, that would have been a nice bet.

@Steel Panther. Dude, don't worry about Warriors. With Eels salary cap scandal it looks like club is going to be stripped of their Auckland 9's trophy along with points so if that happens as recipients of their Auckland 9's trophy it looks like we have won something ! Yay ! We can only achieve success through failure of others ! Yay ! We suck ! Yay ! We suck ! We suck ! We suck ... :-(

christine's picture

Issac luke is definately not playing the same way he used to , it's a problem with the coach or it's a personal matter either way it's certainly seen on the field & in his game .

Mark Ashford : I saw my nuro & there isn't going to be any treatment till either later this year or next year for my type of ms .
