Round six selections

Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

Sometimes I repeat myself. Often times its because I'm a tad forgetful, but occassionally I repeat myself because I'm trying to make a bloody good point. Last week I mentioned the Dragons had scored just three tries in their last four hours of football. We're now up to 5 hours and 20 minutes, and they're still on three tries. Their last two away outings have yielded no tries at all, and here they are in another away game, against a team that recently beat the team that just beat the Dragons 36-0. The Broncos are yet to taste defeat at home this season, and I suspect I can repeat that statement in a weeks time.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result - Broncos 26 defeated Dragons 0

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

At the start of the season I would have highlighted this game in the schedule, but a lot can change in five weeks. The Eels/Raiders clash the next day looks more enticing, and I would never have said that five weeks ago. These sides actually met in round one when the Rabbitohs put the Chooks to the sword in a clinical display. Things have only gotten worse for the tricolours since then. Losing is a much harder habit to break than winning, and there's no reason to think they've cured their woes yet. To make matters worse, the Rabbitohs will take great delight in pinning some tailfeathers to the bottom of the ladder. No doubt the Chooks will try - there's every chance they'll lift and give us their best performance of the year thus far, but they shan't be winning. No they shan't.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result - Roosters 17 defeated Rabbitohs 10

Parramatta Eels vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday afternoon – Pirtek Stadium

I'm teetering here, and I'm very close to tipping the Raiders. Their form is tremendous, their record against the Eels is good and they have a better strike rate in daytime games. That's three good reasons to tip them, but here are my three reasons I'm not:

  1. Successive away games and a short turnaround from Monday night.
  2. Iosia Soliola is out and he give the Raiders some real punch in the middle third.
  3. Nathan Peats is back for the Eels, and if he can keep his body together long enough he'll be quite the footballer.

It seems odd to say this, but we could be looking at the game of the round. If you like a bet back the Raiders with the handicap start - if they don't win I don't think they'll lose by much.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result - Eels 36 defeated Raiders 6

New Zealand Warriors vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday night – Mt Smart Stadium

The Warriors are a frustrating outfit at the worst of times, so I've made a bit of an effort to avoid watching them this season. I didn't think I was missing out on much, until I found out (just now) that the Warriors have an interchange player named 'Jazz'. That is outstanding, and some very brave parenting from someone out there. I don't know if Jazz is any good, but I have a copy of 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis...and I will listen to it, right after this game. For reasons I can't quite fathom the Warriors are a very short priced favourite here. They did beat the Roosters last week...just, but the Sea Eagles just beat the Roosters too. Granted the Sea Eagles are missing a few key personel, but they win a lot more games at Mt Smart Stadium than the Warriors. Trent Barrett has given his side a nice little freshen up leading into this game and I'm taking a punt that they'll respond positively.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result - Sea Eagles 34 defeated Warriors 18

Penrith Panthers vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Pepper Stadium

At the risk of upsetting our resident Coach Potato, the Panthers are lucky they aren't sitting on zero points right now. They deserved the wins they got, and they were against decent opposition, but if things didn't work out they could be hanging out with the Roosters (and after the Mitchell Pearce fiasco no-one wants to socialize with them). Now at the risk of pleasing our resident Coach Potato, the Panthers could also, with a little more luck, be entrenched in the top four. All their losses, like their wins, have been by narrow margins. I happen to think the Panthers are a team on the rise - Matt Moylan will improve each week, and Segeyaro and Whare should return in the next fortnight or so. Now at the risk of upsetting our resident Coach Potato yet again, I won't be tipping them here. The Cowboys are the form team in the NRL right now and, given the Panthers victories over the Broncos and Eels, they'll be preparing for a contest on Saturday night. If this game was mid-winter and smack-bang in the middle of the Origin series I could entertain a victory for the locals...but not right now. Here's a little stat for you - five games down and Jonathan Thurston is yet to make a single error this season. All those touches and all that running around like a terrier in defence...and not a single error. If he keeps this up he might end up being a pretty decent footballer one day.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result - Cowboys 23 defeated Panthers 18

Cronulla Sharks vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Southern Cross Group Stadium

As a man who likes to poke sticks at the Cronulla club from time to time it unnerves me a little to say this, but here goes - I like the look of this squad. They have the combination of tough, aggressive forwards, level-headed playmakers and exciting backs just about right. Can they actually bring the Shire their first premiership? I say no, but the rumblings have already started on the beaches. Ben Barba appears to have his zing back, and rugby league is a much better spectacle when the little men are zinging. As for the Titans, they've won more games than they've lost - not too bad for the team most assumed would run last. This challenge might be just beyond them - Cameron Cullen makes his NRL debut in the halves and this won't be the easiest place to start your first grade career. There are a few other notable inclusions for the visitors (David Shillington, William Zillman), and they'll give this a good shake. The Sharks to prevail, shaken but not stirred. The name is Bird...Jack Bird.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result - Sharks 25 defeated Titans 20

Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Hunter Stadium

If the Knights repeat that effort from last week they beat the Tigers on Sunday, particularly with the support of a home crowd. I do have a rich history of backing the Knights in these Sunday afternoon fixtures in the Hunter, and it's a strategy that has served me well over the years. But, and there's always a but, this is very young Newcastle squad, and its quite the challenge to back up after a strong effort and produce another strong effort. I suspect they'll be below their best this weekend, and that's a level that doesn't win games in the NRL. The Tigers have lost three games in a row, but they've been competitive. Narrow losses to the Sharks and the Eels is better form than it used to be. Curtis Sironen returns to an otherwise settled Tigers line-up. You want to have points in you to win these afternoon fixtures, and the Tigers have scored 114 in five games - not bad given that they won game where they didn't score at all.

Verdict – Tigers by 8

Result - Knights 18 defeated Tigers 16

Melbourne Storm vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Monday night – AAMI Park

There are four teams below the Storm on the ladder with a better points differential this season, including the Bulldogs. Such is the nature of the purple machine, particularly early in the season where they do enough to keep on winning and not much more. They aren't at their best, but they've won four from five and are undefeated at home. Their only loss came at the hands of the Sharks on a Monday night in Cronulla, and even then they only conceded 14 points. This is a difficult team to tip against, even when you know they aren't firing on all cylinders. While the Storm are a metronome, the Bulldogs remain a riddle wrapped inside an enigma. Just when you convince yourself they're a premiership force (racking up 42 points against the Bunnies) they underperform a week later in a game where I had them pegged as a lock. I'll stick with what I know, and I know the Storm. I don't expect it to be pretty, but they'll get the job done. I've a feeling this game will be the lowest scoring for the round - adjust your betting accordingly.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result - Bulldogs 18 defeated Storm 12

Coach Potato's picture

Thinker how would I be upset about someone tipping against the Panthers? They surely go into the game as outsiders. Although wasn't very long ago Cowboys visited Western Sydney and got hammered by Parra and they were no favourite as I remember. Pretty sure they as much toughness as Parra, and I dare say a little more flare. That adds up to me. Makes no difference if it doesn't to anyone else.

The Joker's picture

P.S am i the only one that thinks moylan and molan have a secret admiration for one another. They make a good couple...even though they look like bro and sis.. HA!

Coach Potato's picture

Wow, I'm the only Raider so far this week. 1 out of 12. Wouldn't expect to have the prospect of getting one back with a team that just smashed the Bulldogs@Belmore.

I'm with the Eels, in heart, Coach, the mind is having second thoughts. They BOYS can do it. Stand strong, Stand firm, and defend those edges like your lives depend on it.

Ok guys I'm out till next week, heading over to Wa for a wedding, Tips are in, proven I have many more years to catch you mob up as supporters, and looking forward to a ripper of a game on Saturday.

Coach Potato's picture

I see Manly play New Zealand away this Saturday night and then play again in 5 days, next Thursday. NRL, are you going to be chartering some light aircraft to get the Eagles back home taking only a few hours longer than the normal commercial flights would?

At the rate of money wasted on this sort of pointless crap alone, it won't be too long before the NRL is in receivership itself.

Coach Potato's picture

I don't have it anymore but I loved my Newtown Jets yo-yo.

Sammills's picture

Broncos can't rely on the home bunker all season but unlike Cowboys the dragons are no match. ponies by 18 +

Roosters should AV beaten Manly and Manly should AV beaten Rabbits. Strange logic but roosters by 2
Tough one agree with Thinker so EELs by a slippery 1
First live Cows game for me since GF so expect Feldt to be the difference again Cows by 8
No Cherry so Warriors by Johnson and 8
Sharks by 6 thanks to nice guy Gallen
Tigers will score more than 26 points which hopefully will be enough.
Storm by 4 with Billys ears making a meal of the dogs forwards

Coach Potato's picture

Long way to come Sammills. Long way home. Contact the NRL. They might be able to get you home slower.

Johnny Ray's picture

Hang on. Wait Coach. They had Yo-yo's ? Man would that would of been awesome especially considering the up and down season NZ Warriors have had these last five years ! Also here's fun fact, did you know Yo-Yo was originally used as weapon in Philippines ? How war weapon got turned into kids toys I have no idea ! It's about as messed up as somebody going into battle with live action bumblebee transformer ! " I'm not taking any of you bastards alive ... " ;-D

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Anyone following the “Newbie System” would have got 5 last week seeing as I only got 3. No seriously, glad I can help you out. That’s the sort of guy I am. Thoughtful, considerate and modest. Then again, maybe I’m just lulling you into a false sense of security before I pounce! Might be this weekend or might not. You’ll find out when I get the perfect 8/8. Yeah, like that’s gonna happen any time soon! Nah, just havin’ an “annus horribilis” like Liz did all those years ago.

OK, enough of this rambling, let’s get this barbie started …

Broncos - I reckon the Boss nailed this one. As he alluded to, I can’t see where the Dragons are gonna their points from. Not against a classy mob like the Ponies anyway. Easy pickings for the Broncs at home you would think.

Rabbitohs - Yeah, it had to happen. Newbie’s tipping against his Beautiful Bondi Boys this week. It breaks me heart to do it but maybe if I tip against them the opposite might happen as has been the case so far this year.

Eels - Raiders are confusing me with their form. Then again, my form this year is confusing me too. Eels look home in this one I reckon. Baggy should be smiling a lot this weekend after his BOYS get the job done. Well, I’m assuming they’ll get it done.

Manly - The thing that has me worried about the Warriors is they’ve only beaten Newcastle and my beautiful boys and as we all know, those 2 teams only have 1 premiership point between them. Nah, gotta go Manly.

Cowboys - Show me the money! Show me the money!

Titans - Sometimes you look at a game and think “yeah, they should win pretty easily” and everyone else says the same thing. The form suggests it and the betting market suggests it. And yet, every now and then Newbie gets this “weird” feeling that it’s just not right. Well, this is one of those times. Got this crazy feeling the Titans might just pinch this one. Considering my position on the ladder I wouldn’t blame you for having a chuckle. No worries, I’ll stick with the Titans.

Knights - This will (possibly) be a close one. Knights at home is good enough for me.

Stormers - This one’s a toughie. Storm, only because they’re at home. Not a huge amount of confidence though.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Cheers.

P.S. Ever wonder what the speed of lightning would be if it didn’t zigzag? Hmmm…

christine's picture

Coach your not the only one on raiders this week I changed my mind that many times & decided there is to much turmoil at parra so I changed to raiders & also the fact they knocked off bulldogs which was great to see so it's raiders for me .

The Joker's picture

SAMMILS ... Billys ears making a meal of the dogs forwards.. what on earth does that mean??

WOW Johnnie Ray that scoops the pool anytime you wanna sell any of that loot mate remember your friends.
Originally thought Knights might win but changed to Tigers cos Knights form a bit ordinary.
Just heard that big Tigers dude out for three weeks....will it make a difference?
Coach the Cowboys will teach your Panthers how to play AND SCORE POINTS. If I'm wrong I'll send an apology.
Just got this from an NRL site.
10 highest players in the NRL for 2016
10 Will Hopoate @ $800 000
9 Ben Barba @ $800 000
8 Roger Tuiavshek $ 850 000
7 Greg Ingles $850 000
6 Anthony Milford $900 000
5Robbie Farrah $900 000
4 J T $1 000 000
3 Cam Smith $1 000 000
2 Kieran Foran $ 1 200 000
1 Daly Cherry-Evans $1 670 000
Just a thought, how many players are out-playing these highly paid players. Apart from J T I think there are many.
Does this create bad feeling in the clubs these guys play for?
Your thoughts?

mark ashford's picture

Just realised 6/10 are Qlders and 2/10 are NZ so where does that leave your blues?
Daly has indicated that the blues will be the same that beat Qld in 2014
Oh dear...Reynolds and What's his name?...maybe bring back Pearce?
When the Chooks (with Pearce)play the Dogs again I'm sure some of the Dogs players will be a little nervous. Or maybe Reynolds scrum play will play into Pearce's hands. A dog any dog will do!

Coach Potato's picture

Are Broncos hoping to break a hoodoo against the Dragons? There is no doubt fans and players alike are fully aware who their bogey team is. Bennet would also be in no doubt about the record. The team that's won their last 8 visits to Suncorp, and all toll the last 11 out of 13 meetings.

I haven't tipped Dragons, but I'm having to have a lazy $10 @$5.80 on the hoodoo continuing, and helping finance some footy bets on the weekend. Regardless of their form, history shows that hoodoos are a phenomenon that are hard to break.

Would also love to hear from the Broncos chest-beaters if the underdogs had a win. Golden point would be lovely.

Hey Mark 2014 boy was that a big year for the blues! some people say persistence beats resistance this could be so, I so badly wanted a decade of dominance, now we have to start again!

BigPeteBx's picture

Evening Guys, yes Thursday and into it again.
Round 6 Predictions/Tips for me are - BRONCOS, RABBITS, EELS, S/EAGLES (yes in NZ - Manly came home strong in second half last week and I think Souths coach breathed a sigh of relief when the full-time whistle went), COWBOYS, SHARKS, TIGERS & STORM (but dont write Dogs off, as they could cause an upset, especially after Raiders giving them a going over last week).

Cheers & keep well - Big Pete (South of the Border and West of The Sandstone Curtain)

Coach Potato's picture

Rocket, you really need to comment on your own two feet, Man! This requesting back-up thing is having me feel more than a bit embarrassed for you.

mark ashford's picture

Heejus Big Pete...where the hell is the Sandstone Curtain?
yes Rocket If we weren't robbed of big Sams try it would be different.
Never mind Sammy is ready to make amends.
Just wish those blues would give us someone to play against.
Maybe Coach's Panthers could provide some players?

Rocket Ryan's picture

Sit back and watch the Broncos coach Potato that will make you feel better.

Coach Potato's picture

From what I read, Panthers will be sitting back passing popcorn on Origin night. Suits me if Merrin Moylan Mansour and Cartwright don't make the cut.

Coach Potato's picture

Seriously, Dragons defence was getting lauded a week ago and now they are chumps? Geez, I hope Broncos frustration doesn't boil over, because that's when the start to break down. When things aren't going to plan.

Jazzy's picture

I don't often post, I'm the silent type, but I just love reading all the comments and banter here. Love my football.

I don't have as much footy merchandise as Johnny Ray, but realised I do have more than one piece, I have Bronco bear, t-shirt, polo, scarf, hat, head scarf, Grand Final 2015 Bear, and my Mal Meninga signature on a napkin I got when I was 10 when he was patrolling the footy field at Souths Acacia Ridge (Brisbane) as a cop just as he was beginning to make his mark in football. Everyone said keep that because he is an upcoming star. So I did.

Hopefully I do better this week than previous weeks. I am on 22 on Footytips.com
I will throw in my tips for this week. I have to go watch my mighty broncos play.

Broncos by 10

Hi Thinker/everyone here's my predictions for round 6.

Broncos season so far
----------------------------
Wk1. Parramatta. Not tested. WON
Wk2. New Zealand. Not tested. WON
Wk3. Penrith. TESTED. LOST
Wk4. North Queensland. TESTED. WON
Wk5. Gold Coast. Not tested. WON
Wk6. St George-Illawarra. Not tested. WON

Looks like the Broncos have really only been tested twice this year, Panthers and Cowboys. Penrith the only team to test enough to send them home as losers. Hey, did I just mention Broncos, Cowboys, and Panthers in the one sentence? Yep. I did.

Tailspin's picture

I'm in but not too much stuff
Cowboys jerseys x 2, coffee mug , drinking glass, big ass hat, the finger, pair of boxers, bed doona cover, JT headgear, football, and for QLD - 2 x jerseys, 1 by fully autographed 1995 jersey the fat mans 3 nil series and heaps of posters. Also a RUM 66 number plate tigerholic - proud sponsors and also an awesome to drink :).
Broncos won pretty easy last night, helped by the dragons being absolutely woefull.
GO the Cowboys.

Whoa. Dude ! Define irony. The St George Dragons has been held scoreless in their last two games against Cowboys and Broncos meanwhile in English Super League the Catalan Dragons have just beaten Hull 40-Nil. :-S

Hey Leon, just put your tips in minus last nights game

Coach Potato's picture

2 weeks from ANZAC weekend. Last year was a mouth-watering 5 game 10 hour feast of footy.

This year it's just the normal round although 3 games on ANZAC Day Monday. What a disastrous program we have in store

Newcastle v Manly
St George v Sydney
Melbourne v New Zealand

Surely it's about time other teams got their turn to sing the National Anthem. Dragons and Roosters have to go. Panthers / Eels I'm sure would battle it out with some spirit.

Johnny Ray's picture

Coach I agree with St George Dragons Game in Sydney, Melbourne Storm Game should be played in Wellington and Queensland should get third game. A Gold Coast Titans V Canberra Raiders Anzac Test Match at Suncorp would be awesome ! ;-D
