Round fourteen selections

Cronulla Sharks vs Melbourne Storm – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

The Sharks have had plenty of time to prepare for this game, and their big-name Origin players return after a confidence-boosting performance for NSW. These sides met in round 6 when the Sharks prevailed 11-2 in Melbourne, but a few important points to take away from that game. The weather was terrible, and the Sharks scored just one try in the 73rd minute. Those conditions, I would argue, suit the Sharks more than the Storm. The weather in Sydney does look pretty bleak (again), so it's worth keeping an eye on the sky. Another wet night and you have to start leaning toward the home side again. Also worth noting that the Sharks in round 6 had much the same team as they do this Thursday, while the Storm have some pretty handy additions to their seventeen this time around (Cameron Munster, Jesse Bromwich, Tohu Harris and Cheyse Blair). Furthermore I note the performances this season of the Sharks at home and the Storm away from home. The Storm are undefeated on the road in 2017 – six wins from six starts. The Sharks home ground used to be a fortress but this season they've won just 3 from 6 – those three wins were a one point victory over the 16th-placed Knights, a one point victory over the 14th-placed Bulldogs and a four point victory over a Thurston-less Cowboys. If the Sharks want to beat the Storm they'll need to be better than that. Clearly they can be better, but I'll stick with my purple buddies in what looks likely to be a gripping, low-scoring contest.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Cooper Cronk has now been ruled out and he's pretty darn important. I'll stick with my original tip but you should all be aware of this team change before you select yours.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result – Storm by 5

Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – Lottoland

The Knights have won just two games this season and they've won just two of their last ten starts at whatever Manly are calling their home gound these days. Akuila Uate gets a chance to show his old club he isn't a spent force just yet. He's worth backing in try scoring markets if such things interest you. Sea Eagles comfortably on a dry track and slightly less comfortably on a wet track, but Sea Eagles whatever the weather.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 14

Result – Sea Eagles by 4

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Rabbits have lost five of their last six games, and that one victory was over the Tigers who are a rabble. One of their more competitive losses during that period was a one point loss to the Broncos. On that occasion, Cody Walker played in the halves and I think they're a better side when he's there. On Friday night he's playing at fullback to make way for Adam Reynolds, and this playmaking combination just doesn't have the spark to challenge the defence of their opponents. The Bunnies record at Suncorp isn't flash at the best of times and we are a long way away from seeing the best of the Bunnies. The Broncos just fell short against the Roosters in Sydney in round 13. Back at home and with Milford and Nikorima returning – they just look like a team with points in them. I can't see the Bunnies keeping up.

Verdict – Broncos by 16

Result – Broncos by 6

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

On paper this should be the game of the round and it would be if the Warriors weren't such a useless lump of lumpiness. Jarryd Hayne has agreed to terms with the Titans and picks up the number one jersey this weekend for his troubles. He's a better player at fullback...surely. A good chunk of the crowd on Saturday will be ex-pat Kiwis but it won't make a lick of difference. The Titans pack will actually turn up to play and they'll win that battle for sure and certain. On the back of that, this fabulous Titans spine of Peats, Taylor, Elgey and Hayne will outpoint that fabulous (on paper) Warriors spine. Back the total points overs I say – there'll be no shortage of razzle and dazzle on the Coast on Saturday afternoon.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result – Warriors by 22

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Carrington Park (Bathurst)

Forgive me Ricky Stuart for I am about to sin. From memory I had these sides pegged as my top two teams at the start of the season. The Panthers then went out of their way to prove to everyone just how wrong I was, but in recent weeks things are starting to look up. Now I accept that their last three victories have been against some pretty ordinary opponents, but they have scored 114 points in those three games, and last week they kept their opponent on zero. That tells me that, slowly but surely, the Panthers are finding their feet. Beating the Raiders is a step-up compared to their recent opponents, but I think they can do this. Note that the Raiders are without the two prop forwards that were injured in the Raiders loss to the Sea Eagles. That evens up the contest for the big men, and the Panthers little men have clearly started to work out where the try line is. Those of you in the greater Bathurst region should find your way to this game. There should be plenty of attacking flair on show and I'm expecting one of those 38-30 scorelines.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Panthers by 4

Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – TIO Stadium (Darwin)

Note the venue folks – this is closer to Townsville than it is to Parramatta, but it's really an away game for everyone. Keep in mind that Darwin still gets maximum temperatures in the low 30s this time of year, which is a little more like Townsville in June than what you'll cop during a western Sydney winter. There'll be more thongs than ugg boots in the crowd on Saturday night. On extended benches we have Corey Norman for the Eels and Jonathan Thurston for the Cowboys, but I'm assuming neither will play. The Cowboys have named debutant Kyle Laybutt in the halves for this game. Laybutt is a promising kid (and at 6 ft 3 inches you won't miss him) but this is a big ask. John Asiata was a revelation in the playmaking role for the Cowboys earlier this season but clearly the Cowboys need him as a prop. You can't trust the Eels for a minute and this is just the sort of game they should win but will throw away with ten minutes of stupidity (I'm looking at you Kenny Edwards), but I'm tipping them anyway. No confidence...and I'm actually hoping I get this wrong.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result – Cowboys by 26

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

In round 11 the Broncos beat the Tigers 36-0, and just last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 18-16. I have every expectation that the Roosters will do to the Tigers what the Broncos did to the Tigers. 36-0 would be a stretch, given the venue, but it's the tri-colours in what I expect will be a dominant performance.

Verdict – Roosters by 20

Result – Roosters by 22

Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

If the Bulldogs weren't awful in round thirteen they were something very close to it....unlawful perhaps? I expect they will improve after that effort, if only because they couldn't possibly get any worse. The problem for the Dogs, above and beyond their crappiness right now, is that the Dragons know the Bulldogs will improve and will prepare accordingly. Given there's next to no chance the Dragons will take this game lightly, they will take this game and win it. It's the Red V for me.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Bulldogs by 14

Wally Lewis - round fourteen selections (in bold)

  • SHARKS vs Storm
  • SEA EAGLES vs Knights

Good morning all.
Mr Awesome's on the bus chat.
Canterbury; Slow, predictable and ordinary. Des is lucky he signed that contract when Reynolds was still there. Even with Reynolds they will struggle.
Penrith: Great coach, well balanced side, tough and professuional.
Manly; Always tough, nice blend of players, Trent as a coach will get better and better. Main thing is the players respect the coach.
Canberra: Play with a lot of heart, too many mistakes, get the least rub of the green by the refs, will need to play for more than 40mins if they want to make the finals.
Melbourne: The best team and coach in the comp
Newcastle: Lean times for many years.
Parramatta: Highly rated coach, will be a threat in the 2nd half of the season.
Warriors: Goodness knows
Saints: Will be a dark horse in the finals
WestsTigers: Will upset a few more sides this season.
Roosters: Highly rated coach and team
Brisbane: As per Roosters
Nth Old: Well coached tough outfit. The break from Johnathon Thurston will hold them in good stead for the finals now.
Gold Coast: Great looking side with a great coach. Will get stronger as the team stays consistent without injury.
What a lovely mild morning at -1 degree.
Cheers from Johnny Awesome

Spartan warrior you need not stay off the website you are as entitled as anyone to be on here so pick up that fighting spirt of yours & come back Spartan warrior & give them what for ...

christine's picture

Thinker do you think bulldogs can turn it around this week with the return of Reynolds , morris & graham playing against dragons at anz ???

Mary S's picture

Spartan Warrior,
I expect you continue to come on site and read the comments. I agree with Christine and others who have commented – your contributions are valued, because differences in views of people adds to the fascination of the site!
If any of us don’t agree with someone’s view, we can always walk away for a bit and calm down, instead of getting “our knickers in a twist’
Cheers to all and have a good week,

christine's picture

Mary s well said I agree with you 100% get back on here Spartan warrior & ignore anyone being negative ...

christine's picture

I know bulldogs are playing bad & i'm not saying for one minute they will beat dragons this week because they won't but they are one of these teams that come time for finals they will win games just to stop the other team from getting two points on the ladder ...

Come back Spartan

mark ashford's picture

Hi Johnny A
Interesting analysis of the teams.
As we have now passed the half way mark are you game to predict a final 8 and maybe a bit gamer for the top 4.
Sharks at home V the storm. This will be a cracker with Gallen trying to save some face from his SOO losses. If Cam Smith plays then it's Storm.
Manly at home V the Knights...no contest Manly by plenty.
Broncos at home V Rabbits...two losses in a row for the Broncs plus the SOO embarrassment. Broncs by plenty.
Titans at home will give a hapless Warriors a lesson.
Panthers V Raiders out at Big Pete's territory. Will be cold and maybe the Raiders handle the cold a bit better.
Eels V Cowboys...Will JT be back? if so then it's the Cows.
Tigers V Roosters...on form you must take the Chooks.
Dogs V Dragons. Two weeks in a row Dogs lose to higher placed teams Sharks and Roosters then lose to Panthers who are just above them. Forget the home advantage they are a club in trouble.
Dragons by a comfortable number.
On their form against Panthers you surely take Dragons

christine's picture

I agree with your take on rd 14 mark but tell me who are your top 8 in no particular order & your top 4 , my top 4 are what you see right now on the ladder & if there is any change it will be between broncos & roosters & I have to say wouldn't be good if bulldogs finished as wooden spooners this year instead of knights ?

mark ashford's picture

Hi Chris
My top 8 in no guaranteed order are;
Storm; Sharks; Roosters; Broncos; Cowboys; Dragons; Raiders and Eels
With the Panthers and Titans to challenge the Eels for the #8 spot.
Top 4 is a bit harder again in no particular order but Storm, Roosters, Broncos and Raiders seems to fit.
The team who could upset my predictions is Manly they are going well.
Just as I hope you are well.

The Thinker's picture

Christine

When I've really had doubts about the Bulldogs they tend to do better than I expect..even if they don't win.

I didn't think they would beat the Panthers, but I didn't see a 38-0 loss coming.

Teams often bounce back after an embarrassing performance so it wouldn't surprise me if they turned up this weekend.

Will I tip them though? I doubt it.

mark ashford's picture

Thinker
It would take a brave man to tip them after the Panther demolition.
However look at the Panthers (as far back as I go) Round 3 loss to the Chooks RD 4 win over Knights Rd 5 loss to Storm Rd 6 loss to Rabbits RD 7 loss to Sharks RD 8 loss to Eels Rd 9 loss to Broncs Rd 10 win over Warriors Rd 11 win over Knights Rd 12 bye Rd 13 win over the Dogs.
While everyone is applauding the Black Cats have a look at their form this year. 2 wins over the Knights and 1 over the Warriors and now a good win over the Dogs who are struggling.
They have almost as bad a win rate as the Panthers.
For mine neither Dogs nor Panthers to make the 8.

Wonder if Coach still reads these pages. His Panther predictions would surely be embarrassing to say the least.

christine's picture

Thinker I certainly won't be tipping them as I said but not in exactly these words I think the bulldogs are like an annoying pimple on your butt or any where else for that matter that just turns up out of the blue to ruin your day / weekend for that matter & then no soon as it turned up it's gone or they might win one game but they won't be winning too many more they're only going to be there to try to stop the teams higher on the ladder getting two points when it counts , sorry for my choice of wording but I did try to clean it up for you as much as possible ...

christine's picture

Mark It's up to you what your top 4 is but if I was you I wouldn't have raiders in my top 4 & I would have eels in my top 8 but that's me you have your top 4 / 8 the way you want to ...

christine's picture

Mark I do think raiders will be there some where in the 8 but I don't think they are playing the same as they were last season they had more drive to win last season & this season it seams to be lacking ...

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
and hello Mr Mark Ashford,
Yep it’s the halfway mark and I’ve got an idea of what I think might be a top eight.
Minor premiers: Melbourne, 2nd: Roosters, 3rd: Cronulla, 4th: Nth Qld,
5th: Brisbane, 6th: St George, 7th: Penrith and 8th: Manly, Parramatta or Canberra [Even bet on these three].
Still contemplating on this week’s round 14 games. All is not what is seems.
Cheers from Mr Awesome.

christine's picture

That is going to make for a good game to watch this week rapana v Mansour ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thank you for the optimist outlook mark, while I do think that your eight is pretty close I'm not yet sold on the BOYS being there. We are getting to be more Bronco like, winning without the stars on the field. Which gives me hope that we are a team not just a group of talented blokes where one needs to do all the lifting, and deep down in my cynical, jaded hospitality burnt soul, I feel we will be there.

Fortress's picture

I'm sorry mark as much as I respect and like you your top 8 while close 2 the mark leaves a club who has been quite magnificent so far this year in all honesty the eels, panthers, the warriors, the tigers, the knights are not up to first grade standard people can come on here and attack me as much as you like but its my opinion based on form, fact the top 6 are head and shoulders above the rest with the cowboys in that mix because of jt and there skill.

My top 8 not in order with form holding up...........

1.the mighty eagles
2.the storm
3.the broncos
4.the sharks
5.the roosters.
6.the dragons.
7.the raiders
8.the cowboys

The only teams outside that top 8 are the titans and bulldogs i put the dogs there because of des hasler and the fact they can still improve if there team plays to there potential then they could shock.

That's my opinion based on fact and form.

Good evening from the fortress where the mighty eagles just simply keep winning !!!!!!!!

a's picture

Here's my ladder

1 Storm

2 Sea Eagles

3 Broncos

4 Roosters

5 Sharks

6 Dragons

7 Raiders

8 Cowboys

9 Eels

10 Panthers

11 Titans

12 Warriors

13 Bulldogs

14 Rabbitohs

15 West Tigers

16 Knights

Steel Panther's picture

Baggy...I'm confident your BOYS will make the eight instead of Manly.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hello all,
Mr 'a' interesting ladder. You've rated Manly 2nd. They are good Mr 'a' but not sure they'll climb that far. On current form, they could make the right. Just surprised you've rated the Ciwboys so low. Then again Mr 'a' there are still two State of origins to go and that could mess up the standings as well. You and I agree that the Dragons will get sixth, let's hope we are wrong and they make the top 4.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Baggy_Gee's picture

I'm hoping so Steel, be nice to see the Warriors and the BOYS get there by seasons end. Amazing stat, about 4-5 teams will have had both their byes before we get our first.

a's picture

Yeah State of origin always messes things up

Steel Panther's picture

The Warriors dont deserve to make the 8 Baggy. Same old same old just a different year. My tip is take the bye to win next week against the Warriors!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Think they'll struggle with the opposed session. A few years ago I'll agree the BOYS didn't deserve to even dream of being top 8, but now with a few more consistent performances they are earning that spot.

Fortress's picture

Steel panther keep dreaming, keep dribbling ur hatred of the mighty eagles is killing you come off the meds, get back to reality and smell the roses if u care so much for your great mate baggy pants is it fair you give him so much false hopes dynamite dreams your opinions including your mates,is based on jealousy and biased and hate when are the both of you going to face the facts, both your clubs are insepid!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Johnny awesome "a" is right he is going on form and what has already happened this year on form the mighty eagles are in the top 4,what happens from now to the end of the year nobody knows but when u are going to predict the top 8 it must be based on what already has happened based on truth and fact, look I hate the storm ,but it doesn't mean I don't have them in the top 4,its not about who we hate and like its about fact and form over the last 13 rounds ,teams like what's the matter, penrith ,the warriors ,the tigers, the knights what we have seen from these sides has been at most 2nd rate its not just me saying it but most experts are saying if you check the power rankings by experts round by round what's the matter,Penrith, warriors, tigers and knights have never once appeared in the top 8 never ever, the top 6 have always been the top 6 and as I've stated above the cowboys in that mix with the jt factor its not about hate or like it's about fact so why can't people face the facts !!!!!!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

H. Fortress H. Our opinions aren't valid while yours are? Is it simply because we dare to have a difference of opinion, or that we don't follow your team. Passion is a word used to cover up some disgraceful behavior by fans and it seems here as well. My H word is hubris.

christine's picture

Johnny awesome I don't believe you being a dragons man you seriously don't see dragons making top 4 , how about 5th or 6th then do you think they can do that ?

Fortress's picture

Baggy pants the "h" was often used by your other great mate tgs spud head, which was used against a very respected Lady Christine on this site,u are now sinking lower than a snakes belly to keep using the "h" word against others on this site .

Look if u think you crap has been side what's the matter can make the top 8 well then good for you we all want our clubs to be in the top 8, but its a top 8 for the semi finals not top 16 are you sure your following the right sport, yes we are all on here to offer our opininons and we all have that right but and I will say it again because I know ur slower than the average bear, your opininons is based on who you like or hate.

If I had a top 8 of who I liked or hated the top 8 I stated in my previous post would be different so baggy pants we are going on form over the last 13 rounds not just one or two games fair dinkum man surely you can see that u and steel panther need to understand one thing u have to stop blaming other teams success on your clubs non success that's the crux of it all !!!!!!!!!;

mark ashford's picture

Chris
We're only half way through so it's impossible to predict top 8 or top 4.
So many things can happen. Loss of form, Injuries to top players, coaches getting sacked (tongue in cheek) etc.
Penrith or Manly (or any other team) could win their next 13 games and where would that put us.
Manly's Jorge Taufua (apologies for the spelling) is supposedly out for the season. How will that effect the Sea Eagles.
Slater has allegedly been called up for Qld. How will that effect Storm.
So many factors to influence the final make up.
I thought Klemmer had his temper under control but watching him against the Panthers he looked ready to explode (can anyone remember the name of that sci-fi movie where contestant's heads exploded in a mist of gore ?) It'll come to me!!!! just did Scanners!!!
Old movie great special effects.

mark ashford's picture

Chris
I've said it before but it's great to see you posting so regularly here.
A certain x-regular made it uncomfortable for you, which was very unfair as he was aware of your medical problems.
"a" is another one of our respected posters. He has a problem or two as well but has given us an extra comp this year to add to the fun.
I hope you both see this site as "happy therapy" as I do.

a's picture

Yeah I am yes I did have a problems with you know who he criticised me for running my comp but it's all good since he's gone

Fortress's picture

Mark one player does not make a team, yes Georgie is a great player but everyone thought since we lost tommy turbo through injury and thank god he is soon to come back, many people thought we would struggle but we thrashed the titans, and beat the raiders in a golden point epic.
My club is playing as a team we will be fine hastings and others are great replacements.

Look at your club injuries ,state of origin yet their in the top 4 to win the comp it has to be a team effort.

Its going to be a great second half of the year but I will stick with my top 8.!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Johnny A
Before we give 'a" too much grief remember it was a "not in any order" selection for the finals.

mark ashford's picture

Hey all it's too early. Lets wait until round 20 to give our predictions.
By then we should know who's going well, and SOO will be behind us.

A tip if you'd like a laugh. Shaun the Sheep is on ABC 2 at 6.50 every night. It's clever, funny and guaranteed to make you smile.
A bit like Wallace & Grommit but faster.
If you don't like Bitzer the dog there is something wrong with you.

mark ashford's picture

Fortress
I expect your Manly to be there when the 8 is read out.
You have 2 great rivalries.
1st is Storm and you know why.
2nd is Broncos. Who beat you on their entry into the comp, and you have beaten the Broncs many times since.
Don't worry too much mate about those other Sydney teams who are jealous of your success.

christine's picture

Mark Hello I know it's too early to predict I just wanted opinions remember last year mark everyone thought I had lost my bet that I put on for who would win the grand final in fact I had people even tell me I had put it on to soon I had lost my money & what happened sharks won I didn't lose my money at all see sometimes you can get a feel for the way a team is playing & also remember one person doesn't make a team good it's a shared load so if a good player gets injured & they are out for weeks at a time the team can continue winning because they have multiple good players for example storm & mark if you think about it by this stage in the season we should have indications already of which teams will be there & which teams won't ie : we know knights , tigers , bulldogs ,souths , have no chance so they are out of the equation straight away , part of it is also looking & thinking ahead & making allowances for penalties & injuries that's why a team can't just rely on one player to be good at what they do ,see that's they way I try to analyse things sometimes it's easy sometimes it's hard but that's league & it also depends on the draw of who is playing who ...

christine's picture

Mark I will give you another tip it's up to you if you take it or not but at the start of an nrl season say about rd 4 you should have an indication which teams are winning their games & which teams aren't so you don't tip the ones that aren't winning there games & you can ignore this advice from me if you like but it has helped me win three in house comps over the years ...

mark ashford's picture

Chris
I love your enthusiasm. Keep that analysis going and put a dollar or two on who you fancy.
My favourites are Storm, Roosters, Cowboys and Broncos.
Being a Qlder I haven't picked too many NSW teams.
Off to bed now going to a Caravan & Camper show tomorrow in Bris.

christine's picture

Mark my family knows the person behind shaun the sheep his name is Justin scnider true story look at the credits when it comes on ...

a's picture

Yeah Shaun the Sheep is my favourite kids show I love the sheep of this show

a's picture

My predictions for the finals in round 20 could change you know

christine's picture

"a" Your predictions for finals in rd 20 will change that much I can assure you but also keep in mind with what I said to mark some seasons are harder to pick than others & when they start playing finals footy they really do step it up a notch ...

a's picture

Yeah upsets can happen at any time

Mary S's picture

Hi Fortress,
I would agree that one person does not make a team, but the cohesion of the team is often missing when a particularly good player is off through injury, because of the skill, canniness, ability to anticipate the plays and run with the ball that the player represents. This ingredient can have a big impact on the remaining team until they manage to regroup.

Yes, each club has skilled replacements but a lot are not able to bring the same cohesion to the team that the missing person represents.

Good luck everyone with your tipping this week.

Fortress's picture

Agree with you christine, mark and "a" you people know ur footy, spoken with truth and fact,no bias no hate just plain old common sence its a pity there are 2 people on here that can't relate or see it as it is but of course anything can happen it what's footy so great and sport in general expect the unexpected !!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Mary s I agree with you to some point mate, but the top teams learn to cover they have the ability to rise to the occasion,Smith was out for the storm many believed hey wait on the knights have a chance here but not me look I don't like cam Smith or the storm but having said that it does not mean he isn't a champion player from a champion team there are 2 people on here and they know who they are if u read there posts they have hate ,bias they don't see fact, that game between the mighty eagles and the raiders was an epic battle my god,now let's say that Canberra lead manly 20_6 and manly came back in the second half to level and Canberra kicked the field goal I promise you mary s baggy pants and steel panther would of been on here saying what a great win it was for the raiders, you see there disgusting hate of my club is so deep that if the mighty eagles won 20 comps in a row they would still not give them an inch of credit I have seen in the past both their clubs perform well in years gone by,I dont like what's the matter but I'm the 80's they had a golden era but for god sake they havnt won a comp 35 years fact is fact even the kiwi boys have performed better its the truth its fact its how it is its what has happened and its what is happening.

Just for the record the storm minus cam smith beat the knights by 40 yes people will see but it was Newcastle but Smith makes a great difference!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Awesome's picture

Good morning all,
Another fine but windy morning in the Nations Capital. I'm hearing ya Mr Mark Ashford regarding predictions at Round 14. Like Mr 'a' said by round 20 our round 14 tips might be all different. Hi Christine, I am a Dragons man been following them since 1969. But at my age, I'm also a pragmatist at times and realise a top 4 is possible for the Saints hope so, but with the quality of opposition, it will be hard. I'm also realistic in the sense that if Saints or Canberra number two team play indifferent, I'll say it but it won't diminish my love for the sides. Talking about clubs, I may have a different view to most. I actually follow the club itself not a player, not the admin, not a coach. That's where it is for me, people come and go but the club as it remains. Great to hear views, you talk a lot of sense. Time for the bus all, getting some shut eye on the trip. Cheers all from Mr Awesome
