Round fourteen selections

Cronulla Sharks vs Melbourne Storm – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

The Sharks have had plenty of time to prepare for this game, and their big-name Origin players return after a confidence-boosting performance for NSW. These sides met in round 6 when the Sharks prevailed 11-2 in Melbourne, but a few important points to take away from that game. The weather was terrible, and the Sharks scored just one try in the 73rd minute. Those conditions, I would argue, suit the Sharks more than the Storm. The weather in Sydney does look pretty bleak (again), so it's worth keeping an eye on the sky. Another wet night and you have to start leaning toward the home side again. Also worth noting that the Sharks in round 6 had much the same team as they do this Thursday, while the Storm have some pretty handy additions to their seventeen this time around (Cameron Munster, Jesse Bromwich, Tohu Harris and Cheyse Blair). Furthermore I note the performances this season of the Sharks at home and the Storm away from home. The Storm are undefeated on the road in 2017 – six wins from six starts. The Sharks home ground used to be a fortress but this season they've won just 3 from 6 – those three wins were a one point victory over the 16th-placed Knights, a one point victory over the 14th-placed Bulldogs and a four point victory over a Thurston-less Cowboys. If the Sharks want to beat the Storm they'll need to be better than that. Clearly they can be better, but I'll stick with my purple buddies in what looks likely to be a gripping, low-scoring contest.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Cooper Cronk has now been ruled out and he's pretty darn important. I'll stick with my original tip but you should all be aware of this team change before you select yours.

Verdict – Storm by 1

Result – Storm by 5

Manly Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights – Friday night – Lottoland

The Knights have won just two games this season and they've won just two of their last ten starts at whatever Manly are calling their home gound these days. Akuila Uate gets a chance to show his old club he isn't a spent force just yet. He's worth backing in try scoring markets if such things interest you. Sea Eagles comfortably on a dry track and slightly less comfortably on a wet track, but Sea Eagles whatever the weather.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 14

Result – Sea Eagles by 4

Brisbane Broncos vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Friday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Rabbits have lost five of their last six games, and that one victory was over the Tigers who are a rabble. One of their more competitive losses during that period was a one point loss to the Broncos. On that occasion, Cody Walker played in the halves and I think they're a better side when he's there. On Friday night he's playing at fullback to make way for Adam Reynolds, and this playmaking combination just doesn't have the spark to challenge the defence of their opponents. The Bunnies record at Suncorp isn't flash at the best of times and we are a long way away from seeing the best of the Bunnies. The Broncos just fell short against the Roosters in Sydney in round 13. Back at home and with Milford and Nikorima returning – they just look like a team with points in them. I can't see the Bunnies keeping up.

Verdict – Broncos by 16

Result – Broncos by 6

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

On paper this should be the game of the round and it would be if the Warriors weren't such a useless lump of lumpiness. Jarryd Hayne has agreed to terms with the Titans and picks up the number one jersey this weekend for his troubles. He's a better player at fullback...surely. A good chunk of the crowd on Saturday will be ex-pat Kiwis but it won't make a lick of difference. The Titans pack will actually turn up to play and they'll win that battle for sure and certain. On the back of that, this fabulous Titans spine of Peats, Taylor, Elgey and Hayne will outpoint that fabulous (on paper) Warriors spine. Back the total points overs I say – there'll be no shortage of razzle and dazzle on the Coast on Saturday afternoon.

Verdict – Titans by 8

Result – Warriors by 22

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Carrington Park (Bathurst)

Forgive me Ricky Stuart for I am about to sin. From memory I had these sides pegged as my top two teams at the start of the season. The Panthers then went out of their way to prove to everyone just how wrong I was, but in recent weeks things are starting to look up. Now I accept that their last three victories have been against some pretty ordinary opponents, but they have scored 114 points in those three games, and last week they kept their opponent on zero. That tells me that, slowly but surely, the Panthers are finding their feet. Beating the Raiders is a step-up compared to their recent opponents, but I think they can do this. Note that the Raiders are without the two prop forwards that were injured in the Raiders loss to the Sea Eagles. That evens up the contest for the big men, and the Panthers little men have clearly started to work out where the try line is. Those of you in the greater Bathurst region should find your way to this game. There should be plenty of attacking flair on show and I'm expecting one of those 38-30 scorelines.

Verdict – Panthers by 8

Result – Panthers by 4

Parramatta Eels vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – TIO Stadium (Darwin)

Note the venue folks – this is closer to Townsville than it is to Parramatta, but it's really an away game for everyone. Keep in mind that Darwin still gets maximum temperatures in the low 30s this time of year, which is a little more like Townsville in June than what you'll cop during a western Sydney winter. There'll be more thongs than ugg boots in the crowd on Saturday night. On extended benches we have Corey Norman for the Eels and Jonathan Thurston for the Cowboys, but I'm assuming neither will play. The Cowboys have named debutant Kyle Laybutt in the halves for this game. Laybutt is a promising kid (and at 6 ft 3 inches you won't miss him) but this is a big ask. John Asiata was a revelation in the playmaking role for the Cowboys earlier this season but clearly the Cowboys need him as a prop. You can't trust the Eels for a minute and this is just the sort of game they should win but will throw away with ten minutes of stupidity (I'm looking at you Kenny Edwards), but I'm tipping them anyway. No confidence...and I'm actually hoping I get this wrong.

Verdict – Eels by 2

Result – Cowboys by 26

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – Campbelltown Stadium

In round 11 the Broncos beat the Tigers 36-0, and just last week the Roosters beat the Broncos 18-16. I have every expectation that the Roosters will do to the Tigers what the Broncos did to the Tigers. 36-0 would be a stretch, given the venue, but it's the tri-colours in what I expect will be a dominant performance.

Verdict – Roosters by 20

Result – Roosters by 22

Canterbury Bulldogs vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

If the Bulldogs weren't awful in round thirteen they were something very close to it....unlawful perhaps? I expect they will improve after that effort, if only because they couldn't possibly get any worse. The problem for the Dogs, above and beyond their crappiness right now, is that the Dragons know the Bulldogs will improve and will prepare accordingly. Given there's next to no chance the Dragons will take this game lightly, they will take this game and win it. It's the Red V for me.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Bulldogs by 14

Wally Lewis - round fourteen selections (in bold)

Note: tips from Wally will be published on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

  • SHARKS vs Storm
  • SEA EAGLES vs Knights
  • BRONCOS vs Rabbits
  • TITANS vs Warriors
  • PANTHERS vs Raiders
  • Eels vs COWBOYS
  • Tigers vs ROOSTERS
  • Bulldogs vs DRAGONS

Steel Panther's picture

Can anyone on here show me one single post where Steel Panther has said he hates Manly. In fact before NZ had a team Manly was the first choice team of most people here as it had many Kiwi connections namely the Iro brothers, Darrell Williams, Matthew Ridge to name a few and probably the biggest name Graham Lowe as coach. Fortress continually interprets a difference of opinion as hatred for his club. On this site we all have our opinions and just because it is not the same as someone elses doesn't give us the right to attack the poster personally. I applaud your passion for the game and your team Fortress but you lose credibility and respect with your personal attacks and accusation that I hate Manly.

Doggie's picture

Morning Christine. Hope you werent suggesting that Bulldogs tank games just because they cant make the 8. If a side is good enough then they will beat sides below them and deserve a spot in the finals. Tanking is a blight on the AFL because once a team cant make the finals they try and finish as low as they can to secure draft picks. Bulldogs last year had agood run and were in the top 4 coming towards finals but lost last 4 or 5 games and were bundled out of playoffs straight up. Deservedly so. No side took it easy on them just because they were higher on ladder.

christine's picture

Doggie the word tank never came out of my mouth I never said tank you did i'm just telling mark how I do things when i'm in a comp so don't accuse me of anything if your team isn't doing any good this year that's not my fault nor is it yours for that matter but don't get all defensive & accuse me of things I haven't said , I tip when i'm in a comp the way I tip & if you don't like that then who is the person with the problem I can tell you right now it's not me ...

christine's picture

Doggie the way you jump down my throat & accuse me of something I didn't even say is the reason people don't like bulldogs fans they have the worst fan base of any club they always cause fights at games & I for one don't need it so don't jump down my throat accusing me of something I did not say or do in typical bulldogs style ok ...

christine's picture

To all on this site fortress this includes you this is a friendly site lets keep that way if you don't agree with something someone says don't take it personal as an attack on you or your club there is no need to stoop so low as someone who shall remain name less it doesn't mean you have to resort to verbally attacking them & insulting them saying things about there I Q this is not jerry springer it's a rugby league website so lets be civil we don't need bullying on here but banter is ok & if you can't contain yourselves the powers that be ie : the thinker will deal with you ...

christine's picture

Fortress before you even say it no i'm not picking on you i'm saying it to everyone ok ...

christine's picture

Thinker news of 1 hour ago john grant resigned ...

a's picture

I so hope the NRL is not in trouble

christine's picture

"a" nrl isn't in trouble they have to much money for that but the clubs / teams wanted john grant gone because of the salary cap so due to pressure he's going ...

a's picture

Yes he's putting too much pressure on players

Doggie's picture

Sorry i upset you Christine, not my intention. You seemed upset that the dogs will try and stop teams getting 2 points, thats what all sides do and if they dont its tanking. Im agreeing that the dogs are gone, dog gone it, ha ha. just come up with that one.

Mary S's picture

Hi to all,
I would like to comment on personal observations I have in regard to the site and hopefully not offend anyone by doing so. Christine, I felt that Doggie was asking for clarification of a particular point in his post this morning. It would appear he has a very philosophical view on his team (Bulldogs) success (or lack of) this season and I did not feel he was accusing you in any way.

The consideration that I have for this site is that everyone that contributes has a common interest – football (in whichever form). The fact that we do not necessarily know any of the posters on this site personally, we give a piece of ourselves, through our opinions, every time we post. We do this in trust that our opinion will be respected and acknowledged, if not necessarily agreed with.

From personal experience, I know the devastating and lasting effect that bullying can have on an individual but that can be overcome with time, otherwise the perpetrator wins.
In regard to bullying on this site, my personal observation is that “Coach Potato” has a lot to answer for as he betrayed the trust of those that give to “The Thinker” site and to football in general, by the continual disrespect and ridicule of others opinion. The fact that he can still be referred to (in any form) indicates to me the damage he has managed to do during that time.

I give this piece of myself in the hope that if my observations give you pause for thought, and how you react to others opinion, then it has been worthwhile.

Have fun with your tipping this week!!!!!

christine's picture

Mary s I respect what you said , your view & thoughts on things & doggie all is good naturally I thought you were accusing me of something I hadn't said , what I said about dogs stopping other teams getting two points when it counts come time for finals is nothing I wouldn't say about any other team it's what they are supposed to do isn't it that's the point but no I never said the word or used the word tank it's just not me to say that but mary s when I refer to bullying if you don't like a team some one else likes you don't have to resort to insulting their I Q that's not necessary & that is the sort of thing coach used to do & worse than that so now coach has gone lets all try to get along is what i'm saying ...

Here are my tips

Storm by 1 I think the Storm will ride home in extra time here

Manly by 16 I hate tipping Manly but I will have to against the Knights

Broncos by 12 I think the Broncos will win here

Titans by 2 I think the Titans will continue Warriors road woes

Panthers by 1 I think the Panthers will win in a thiller

Cowboys by 6 I think Cowboys will get back on track with a win over Eels

Roosters by 14 I think the Roosters will flog the Tigers here

Dragons by 4 I think the Dragons will continue Bulldogs woes

christine's picture

I just read paul carter has been dropped by his third club in 4 years , his immediate playing future doesn't look good ...

Steel Panther's picture

Nice post Mary S. The last sentence in your second paragraph is particularly relevant on this site.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Mary S
Agree with Steel, that was an excellent post and I think reflects what we all want from the site.

Fortress's picture

But opinion should also be based on fact not lies not just made up stuff that has nothing to do with what we see that is in front of us,yes we all have rights of opininon most of u have misunderstood my posts maybe it's just too much for someone to understand go back and read carefully steel panther its not about opininon that I'm angry about its ones inability to look at fact OK for example steel panther let's look at the year so far now in your heart of hearts based on overall performance and I'm asking you to state fact but have your opininon OK where would you in all hounesty on there overall performance so far for the year where would you put parramatta please also state fact .

The mighty eagles are extremely popular in new Zealand I've been to mt smart they love them there with all the kiwi greats that played for them,I'm sorry steel panther bit I know u like baggy pants but there is jealousy and hate from him read his posts when I hvnt even said anything he knows he can state these comments thinking he has support on here,Christine I like you but you must read my posts properly I am stating fact that is all !!!!!!

No one can run away from the truth even when it hurts!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

I was born here my parents are kiwis steel panther love both country's!!!!!!!

christine's picture

Fortress I just saying it's constant between you & baggy gee ,if baggy gee says anything you jump down his throat & in return baggy gee is defending himself so no won wins all i'm saying is just leave it alone for a while & things might calm down ...

christine's picture

Let me tell you all it's been raining in Sydney all day we had hail yesterday were I am & it rained heavy over night & the 7 day forecast says showers each day so does that affect who you take this week may be but the showers from tomorrow on shouldn't be as bad as it was today but even now we are still in the middle of a storm ...

christine's picture

Fortress can I ask you a ? this rivalry between manly & Parramatta has it always been that way or is it only been in more recent years because I always thought it was rivalry between Penrith & Parramatta ?

christine's picture

Cronk has been ruled out of the game against sharks ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

It's more that we are still smarting that Judas Lyon left the team that nurtured him to go to the silver spoons. The battle of the west is always a great clash and us vs. the Dogs is a good game especially if the Pooch punchers lose. I think we are the last 3 straight games vs Manly.

Fortress's picture

Christine yes the arch rivals for us are the storm and what's the matter many players have left a club to play for another club for baggy pants its just because he went to the mighty eagles where he became a legend.

Christine you have got it wrong its the other way around us mighty eagles supporters have always defended our mighty club against the jealousy and hate ask big Pete ask any mighty eagles supporter I think u have got it wrong read baggy pants past posts how u continually bags my club never does he comes to terms with the fact that his club has not won a comp in 35 years that is a very very long time for a club that he calls so great, greatness is based on records titles won, look at our record and look at there's there is no comparison.

To be hounest with you Christine baggy is an actor, spud head was the same its a shame u don't see it he hides behind his teams ineptness and bags out the dominate clubs of the modern era for example the mighty eagles, the broncos please Christine go back and carefully read his posts some I havnt even been on where his hate is there than I defend my club I reckon if u did I would change ur mind buddy!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

I challenge anyone, and I'll include the boss and his incredible helper on this one. I have never spoken about the history of my club, our final wins or proposed that we are the bestest of all time. Proof will be accepted. And possibly rewarded with cash prizes.

Greetings to each of thee from the Spartan Warrior,
Thank you Master Thinker for allowing my presence to revisit thy site.
Thank you also Lady Christine, Lady MaryS, Master A, Master Sir Ashford for your invitation to participate once again. My best wishes to all who dwell and contribute here.
I recall a quote:
'There may be people that have more talent than you, but there is no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.'
– Derek Jeter
As in life, as in rugby league, work ethic will always determine the final outcome.
A game maybe lost but a season won through thy own work ethic.
Coupled with team work it will thwart thy opponents advance.
As a Spartan Warrior interlocks his shield with he who stands by his side so too must those who play for the jersey they represent.

christine's picture

Fortress i'm not taking sides with anyone it's pointless so don't bring me into it any more ok I don't want to know ...

christine's picture

Fortress before you say it no i'm not siding with anyone but it's like coach is back on here again but this time you are being no better than coach & I didn't want to be the one to say it but just because your a manly supporter you have a grudge against baggy gee because he supports Parramatta & if you want to hate me for saying it go right ahead i'm not a bad person i'm just pointing out what I see & if I have offended you for saying it to you then sorry for that but it's not just banter going on with you its a real hatred & it's not necessary ...

Fortress's picture

So bag out your own club baggy pants have you ever looked at the mess the ineptness the non titles the rorts I really don't give a stuff what u think ur hate is evident ur imabilty to face facts is evident so go shove it you are a waste of space go away I have told u in the past stop posting about my club and me from this post forward people on here will see for them selves what your really liked I worked out your mate the spud head I have worked u out I don't give a stuff that u have fooled others on this site just like spud head so you and anyone that supports you on this site go jump no more and all will be evident the end baggy pants and we will see p##s off !!!!!

Now back to the footy I will have my round 14 tips in tommorrow

Dragons-fanboy's picture

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Sharks by 8- Cronk is a huge out for Storm, but they do have Smith back who is a huge in for them though without him they did smash the Knights last week. But, the Sharks though they aren't playing very good football, they just keep finding ways to win. They did it to the Storm at the start of the year, and I think that they'll do it again here.

Sea Eagles by 14- Sea Eagles should win and I think will win quite comfortably here.

Broncos by 12- Broncos too good for the Rabbitohs here.

Titans by 4- Keep in mind the Warriors have a great record against the Titans and also at Cbus Super Stadium. Though, I think that Titans will win in a tight one here. Interesting to see how Hayne goes back in the Fullback position.

Panthers by 1- Panthers in a thrilling game.

Cowboys by 8- Dunno if Thurston is playing here, but my tip of Cowboys were for three reasons:
1) I know that it's an if, but Thurston in the side will be a world of good for the Cowboys, they've struggled without him.
2) The conditions over at Darwin is very warm which'll favour the Cowboys who come from the tropical area of Australia.
and 3) Cowboys have won a game their in Darwin in fact their only game there to date.
Though, condidering Cowboys have won their lone game in Darwin, the Eels are undeafeated in 3 attempts in Darwin, it seems to be their hunting ground. But my tip is Cowboys.

Roosters by 20- Gotta give my hat out to the Tigers for their effort aginst the Dargons last week, they were gutsy though coming out losers. Roosters should beat them but by how many? Unfortunately for the Tigers, I think comfortably.

Fianally... the mighty Dragons by 2- Dragons too good for Bulldogs here. I think that it'll be close. The Dogs have some key names back which'll inspire and improve that Bulldogs side. Though, us Dragons have stayed strong with the same side as last week. Last week, we were a little off our game. We should improve I believe here. And that will be enough, plus our class for victory here.

Awesome. Good luck with everyone's teams this week and with everyone's tips for this week. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

christine's picture

I just see your relentless with your attacks i'm not defending anyone but it's getting a bit much Fortress & don't ever tell me to p##s off again you are being no better than spud head as you call him so unless you apologise to me don't mention my name again this war your starting is crazy just because of a football team ...

newbie from perth's picture

Sa-wat-dee krup,

Yup, late again. These Thursday night starts are still doin’ me head in. I don’t know how the Boss does it, especially seeing as he has so much more to do and prepare than Newbie. And the fact he’s leading the way on top of the tipping tree. Sheesh! OK, let’s get into it …

Melbourne - Revenge time? The Storm might be thinking it is. Sharkies at home but I’ll go the Storm Troopers.

Manly - On paper the Manly boys should get the bikkies here and get 'em easy.

Brisbane - Origin 1 has been and gone and the Ponies should get back in the groove this week.

Titans - Toss of a coin for mine. Both lost last week but the Titans’ form line reads a little better in my puny brain. GC for me in this one.

Panthers - The doubts I had last week with the Panthers have magically transferred over to the Vikings. Based purely on how the Panthers carved up the hapless Doggies last week, I’m on the Panthers.

Cowboys - Both won last week. Both have a chance here. Who to pick? Who to pick? Hmmm … maybe because they’re playing in Darwin in the humidity and the Cowboys should be used to that, I’ll go the Cowboys. Giddy-Up!

Roosters - My BBB to win this. Liked how they held on last week against the Ponies. That form is sitting in the bank earning interest!

Dragons - Seriously, I could not believe what I witnessed last week. You couldn’t possibly consider the Doggies based on last week’s effort. What was in their heads I’m still asking myself. Nah, no way, no how, sorry. Dragons for me.

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. If Keira Knightley is naked but no one is around to see it, do I still get aroused? Hmmm…

Greetings from the Spartan Warrior,

Johnny Awesome's picture

Good morning all,
Another bus ride and another day at work in this fine city that is the nation’s capital.
Mr Thinker your tips, insight and analysis looks very formidable again this week. I must admit, I’ve been trying to play catch up with you for a few weeks now, like picking Canterbury last week…..what a disaster. Oh well, it’s never too late to get back to basics, but not this week. The two teams, I’ve differed with you on, is the Cronulla and Parramatta tips. Normally, pound for pound, I’d pick Storm, too clinical, too consistent, and just ruthless. Two factors for me is Cronk, but the main one for me is the mental thing. Cronulla are starting to become Melbourne’s bogey side methinks. I reckon, a very close one and wouldn’t be surprised if it was golden point. Now with Parramatta vs Nth Qld, I picked Nth Qld solely on a catch up basis again ha. Fairdinkum, I never learn huh?
Cheers all great game tonight, don’t miss it folks.
Catch up later from Mr Awesome

Rocket Ryan's picture

Christine why don't you leave Fortress alone, and stop encouraging that other fool.

Mary S's picture

Newbie from Perth and Johnny Awesome, I really enjoyed your take on the teams - so easy to overthink who might win and you still have a 50% chance of being right!!

Rocket Ryan's picture

All the talk as to when Slater will be picked, as a mad Queensland supporter I'm hoping he does not, the side needs to move on, the game waits for no one, Billy will always be remembered as a great of the game and state, but there are a few in the maroons who are now holding out young talent and we might well lose a series but we need to expose them to origin and like Napa their journey begins.

a's picture

Can't we all just get along

Doggie's picture

Going to the game Bigpete? We got one in darwin sat night unfortunately i got a 50th to go to. Well maybe not unfortunately cause its going to be a cracker of a party.

christine's picture

Fortress all I am saying to you is your not annoying baggy gee but it's annoying other people & no one has said you can't support your team or that baggy gee can't support his but don't bring me into it & rocket ryan isn't funny that you feel the need to tell me to leave fortress alone but it was a very different story when it was coach giving you a hard time & fortress I post comments to who ever I want & if you don't like it then don't read it ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

Very hard not too when it is non stop!

a's picture

It okay to support your team everyone where all friends right

christine's picture

Rocket ryan are you telling me i'm not aloud to post comments but others can , if people such as yourself didn't deliberately say things like you just did to make me post another comment then I wouldn't but I don't need your permission or anyone elses rocket ryan to be on this site & how many comments do we get about manly from fortress or broncos from you rocket ryan , don't get involved in someone elses argument rocket which you always do , Spartan warrior if i'm not on here for a few days posting comments i'm never far away I still see what gets posted so keep that in mind rocket ryan & the person that used to post no stop comments was coach at least 400 comments ever time when he was on here I have never done anything like that amount thank you very much rocket ryan so you & your buddy fortress can get off my case & annoy someone else ...
