Round nine selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Panthers were pre-season premiership favourites but have won only twice this season, and only against poor opposition. We salivated at the potential of this Panthers backline but they've scored only ten tries in those six losing games. Something is missing. Trent Merrin has earned himself another Test jersey but he's missed 14 tackles in his last three games. He has some (bad) company in that Panthers pack as Campbell-Gillard and Peter Wallace have been found out in defence in recent weeks too. I expect the Broncos to focus on that, with Milford and Nikorima ready to expose the Panthers right up the hi-diddle diddle. The Broncos have had an extra day to prepare and are preparing at home. The logical tip.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Broncos 34 defeated Panthers 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

Note that the Rabbitohs are playing this home game away from home, although Manly fans are notoriously poor travellers so the Bunnies should have the majority of the support in the crowd. The shoulder charge by Burgess (George) was deemed worse than the shoulder charge by Burgess (Sam).  George takes a seat on the sideline as a consequence. Manly have surprised most of us (especially me) with the quality and consistency of their performances this season. I have to accept they'll turn up to play...and they're good enough. The Cherry-Evans/Green partnership in the halves is working, and their fullback has slotted in to fill the space once filled by Brett Stewart. The local lad looks like he'll be wearing the number one jersey on the northern beaches for the next decade. This is a football team, and I'm tipping them here.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 46 defeated Rabbitohs 8

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

All eyes will be on the Cowboys line-up on Friday night, with Jonathan Thurston named on the extended bench. Rugby League may be a team game, but Thurston is among a handful of players that can make a mockery of that truth. I've tipped against the Eels in their last two victories and I'm taking them on again. Surely I'll get it right...eventually. Coen Hess has replaced Gavin Cooper as the Cowboys try-scoring back-rower – he's racked up 6 tries in 6 games. With that in mind, the Eels will be watching Hess like a hawk, so it's probably time to back Gavin Cooper in try-scoring markets. It's so darn crazy it just might work.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Cowboys 6

Gold Coast Titans vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

15th plays 16th but fans of both teams can, at the very least, appreciate the efforts of both sides. While both are competing against superior opponents, the Titans do appear to have more upside. The Titans forwards look set to dominate, and one has to assume that Peats, Taylor, Roberts, Hayne and Elgey (off the bench) can create enough try-scoring opportunities on the back of that.

Verdict – Titans by 10

Result – Titans 38 defeated Knights 8

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

For some time I've had doubts about the ability of the Bulldogs to cross the stripe. Thus far in season 2017 they are averaging a snifter more than 15 points per game. That's not enough, particularly against the Raiders who are racking up (on average) 25 points per game. That's a lot of points for a team who have lost as many games as they've won, and the Bulldogs haven't scored 25 or more points in a game all year. You score more points than your opponent and you win folks...it's not rocket surgery.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Bulldogs 16 defeated Raiders 10

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Leichhardt Oval

Aaron Woods has announced when he will make his announcement (I'm disappointed he didn't announce when he was going to announce when he will make his announcement but I'm hard to please). I suspect he's holding off until after he has played this game at his 'spritual home'. Given that, I'm expecting a bit of a battle here and I've got this game pencilled in as the match of the round. The Sharks will be keen to win after the shock loss last week, and the stripey cats could step up for Woodsy. The Sharks are clearly the better team and I'm tipping them, but I'm expecting a closer contest than most.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 22 defeated Tigers 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Where the bloodity heckity heck are my team lists for the Sunday games? Sheezus McSneezus won't somebody think of the Thinker? Anyhoo...the four teams playing on Sunday are the same four teams that played on ANZAC Day, which seems fair. And I think it's fair to say that the two ANZAC Day games gave us the highest standard of NRL we saw for the round – perhaps everyone just lifted given the occasion. Now these sides have to lift again, and I'll take a little punt on the Warriors having a little more to play for this weekend. They're at home where they are an entirely different proposition and there is an ANZAC Test coming up.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 14 defeated Roosters 13

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – WIN Stadium

Again no team lists are available at the time of writing so I'm shooting fish in a very dark barrel with this prediction. One thing I do know is that Gareth Widdop is out for six weeks. I can't say that means the Dragons can't win, but it certainly makes it an awful lot harder. As for the Storm, they are a pretty predictable piece of machinery regardless of who laces on the boots. I may be in the dark, but it's dark purple.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result – Storm 34 defeated Dragons 22

Not convinced Thurston will play especially with the upcoming test match. For mine the eels have turned a corner and should put the cows away

Fortress's picture

Hi everyone hope u all had a great Anzac day. And may the memory of the men who fought for this great country ,never be diminished from our hearts.

My tips for round 9 of this fascinating 2017 premiership season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The mighty sea eagles

In what was the game of the round the mighty eagles were magnificent as they defended there line with mighty force just like the anzacs ,and attacked with razzle dazzel to produce a mighty upset in the game of the year so far.
The rabbits were gallant against the broncos but if the eagles bring there form of last week then we should charge to victory!!!!!!!

The broncos
Many people say they were lucky to beat South's ,well the refs may of erred but after watching a replay of the game I think they mag of got it right, they won and now back at home we could see a clinical execution of the cats broncs to buck and rocket to victory!!!!!!!

Raiders.
Despite losing to the mighty eagles they were tough and defended with venom in a great contest, the dogs lost there way against the tigers ,this should be a good game but i have to stick with the green machine!!!!!!!

The sharks.

This was a tough one to pick, the sharks were shocked by the titans and the tigers were brilliant in there upset of the dogs.this could be a game where an upset could happen just leaning towards the sharks in what will be a very interesting game.

Titans.
Huge upset of the sharks last week, they played so well and they should be too strong at home for a spirited knights outfit.

The storm.

As much as I hate the storm the dragons are without Gareth widdop a very big loss for them he has been in great form,in a dour close battle the storm to just get home but its a tough one to pick.

Roosters.
Tough grinding win over the drags
The warriors almost upset the storm in a hard fought battle, this should be a top clash just leaning towards the chooks but the kiwis are tough as teek they will fight to the end love to pick them is this another golden point ?

Cowboys.

To put it in a nut shell if the cows were at full strength them they would carve what's the matter up but since they are not then I will go for half a carve up the cows to beat whats the matter and without Mr thurston.

Well folks that's my tips just remember one simple thing you should never ever back down if u believe you are right !!!!

Cheers from the fortress soaring with the mighty eagles!!!!!

Good post Fortress. Your Manly boys are on a roll.
"a" still not 100% clear on your comp.
My pick last week lost so I get 2 more goes at the Sharks?
Anyway this week put me down for the Titans.

Hi Think,

Round 8 results was a shocker. Well I hope those those winning teams back it up with a good performance for Round 9.

Here is my Round 9 Tips:

Panthers by 4
Eagles by 10
Eels by 2
Titans by 12
Bulldogs by 12
Sharks by 12
Warriors by 6
Dragons by 7

The Thinker's picture

You're right Taka

When I watched that Eels/Tigers match in round seven I thought there is no way this form will stack up...and they both won in round eight.

Oh well....as long as I get it right 99% of the time :-)

tigerholic's picture

Fortress

You used the "H" word.

Tigers out spending, I often do that when I am feeling down.

christine's picture

Mark you get one more chance to tip the sharks because they lost when you tipped them last week & if you tip them again this week & they loose then you have two strikes so that gives you one more chance then after that to tip them again & if they loose that then your out of the comp okay ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

Christine is that 2 many chances for mark

christine's picture

Rocket ryan don't confuse mark even more than he already is ok it's simple if you get a total of tree strikes then your out ,each time you choose a tem if that team looses then you get a strike but if they loose you can select the team again but only if they loose if they win you can't use them again & who ever gets to ten points then has to keep tipping against everyone else until there is a winner okay ...

1. I didn't think anyone would dare tear strips of my post paying homage to the origins of The Ode but I was wrong
2. I didn't think anyone would have a problem with my nicer approach to my thoughts but I was wrong.

And now I'm on report?
What was the grading?

christine's picture

Changing one more of my tips for rd 9 to :
broncos
manly
eels
titans
raiders
sharks
warriros
storm
no more changes for me these are my tips guys sorry about that ...

Fortress's picture

That is exactly correct you are wrong man you really are desperate now slowly running out of ideas I did not tear strips of you Anzac poem u liar I was saying that all of a sudden this massive change in your attitude please for god sake be man enough to own up to your mess and stop this guilt tripping i read u like a book coach u will never play me do a fool this is the last post I talk about this so please back off and let's let the powers to be deal with this do not post to me or about me again u make me cringe !!!!!!!!!!

Big Pete mate im sorry can u please tell me what to do about giving u my personal e_mail we will meet very soon as I need to talk to you in person and hope this thinker site will be rid of the rubbish but when we meet we will talk OK don't get me wrong apart from a few the rest of the folk on here are great !!!!!!

tigerholic's picture

Hey Fortress
I mentioned spending by the Tigers, I'm all good mate, love your posts and do you think we can give he who we don't mention another chance.
I see him struggling at the moment, everything he posts seems to offend.
I don't agree with everything he posts and a lot lot of his attacks on A, Christine and others were way out of line, this is one occasion where I believe Mr Thinker could have banned him or put it to the panel(us) to determine how long his ban would be, what do you think?
How often do you go to Brookie??

Fortress's picture

Christine your doing well keep it up OK just remember no matter what the odds u can overcome anything.

Thanks mark Ashford glad u liked my post mate its good to have a positive comment from a fellow poster.

Hope ur all enjoying ur evening on this chilly night in Sydney its going to be cold down hear at brookvale tonight keep warm everyone.

And don't forget if u can meet triumph with disaster and treat those 2 imposters the same then only then we can understand the true meaning of winning and losing.

Cheers. From fortress!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Hey tiger yeah mate go there as often as I can I am a gold member ,but I do love to sometimes join the army on the hill when we pack out the atmosphere on the famous hill is electric!!!!!

On the other subject just want to leave it alone for now OK just had enough we will let things get sorted and don't worry all will be good u have a good night tiger and as I stated in my post that was a hard game to pick and if ur tigers upset the sharks well then ur dreams of making the 8 may become a reality u never know!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Christine. I think I've got it now.
I get 3 goes at each team and if they all lose I'm out.
At the same time I need to pick 10 winning teams and then I'm a winner.
Who is keeping score, is it you "a" or Thinker.
AND how long do you predict this will go?
I'm sticking to my offer of a $75 prize, hopefully to be given before the finals.

a's picture

Yeah I think it will be over from round 18-20

I think we both keeping score

mark ashford's picture

Fortress,
The Potato man has backed off and I think it would be good if you did too.
Coach and I have crossed swords many times, he hates the Broncs and QLD SOO.
Which is all good as long as we keep it to club/state rivalries.
The H word that a few have referred to was "hypocrisy" and I would like to see it gone, when talking about other posters.

Coach and I clash tomorrow night. The underperforming Panthers against the "just getting there" Broncos.
Of course I've tipped my Broncs but we don't have a great record against the black cats.
Good luck Coach...may the best team win.

christine's picture

Mark no you don't get three goes at each team , if you tip a team one week & they win you can't use that team again but if the team you choose looses you can use that team again & each time a team you choose looses you get a strike against you max aloud is three strikes so get three strikes your out okay & I say "a" & the thinker will be keeping score ...

christine's picture

"a" I have put my tip for your A game comp in the lounge section I tipped titans for week 2 of your comp ...

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Christine and "a"
As the major sponser of "a"'s comp can I be left out of the result?
Would be embarrassing if I won it! Just kidding but leave me out.

Coach Potato's picture

Good luck to you too Mark and Rocket.
Won't need half as much luck as what the Panthers will need.

Thanks for your comment although I'm not so much requiring allies, just the same go as others.

Not sure how all this stuff about me is passing the appropriate test, but anywho. Thinker is the judge and I should trust his integrity.

Enjoy the game.
It'll probably be close until just after kickoff.

christine's picture

Mark why are you pulling out of "a's" A game comp now when you were in it last week seriously do you really think i'm going to let you do any better than me mark , you underestimate me ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Coach, tomorrow's game will be decided after 90 minutes, your guys have the potential, and as the Tigers and other teams have shown that it ain't over till its over. Have a bit of heart and hopefully all that potential will fall right and you can get the win.

christine's picture

Mark I was only stirring you up do what ever you want it's up to you ...

newbie from perth's picture

Hi everyone,

Newbie returned to work today after 2 weeks off and still trying to get the clock working again. Lost all track of time and this week’s round starting tomorrow night hasn’t helped either. I’m starting to feel like that rabbit from Alice In Wonderland running around with too many things to do and not enough time to get ‘em all done.

“Oh my fur and whiskers! I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!”

That being said, I only have time to get my tips in and that’s all. No comments on who and why, not that it makes much difference going on my less than impressive effort last week. I thought I had this caper sussed but my true worth is starting to shine through! Just need to soldier on eh? Anyway, my tips (for what they’re worth) are as follows:

Broncos
Manly
Cowboys
Titans
Raiders
Sharks
Roosters
Dragons

OK kids, good luck with your tipping and may your team win by 40 points! Until next week people. Cheers.

P.S. If a turtle loses its shell, is it naked, homeless or both? Hmmm…

Rocket Ryan's picture

Broncos Panthers big day for me off to work now cant wait to get to Suncorp and fix the balance sheets we owe you coach wont be a happy camper till we pay in full, I hope we don't take this game to light just when you think a side is no hope they pop up look at the tigers they prove anything can happen in the NRL.

Coach Potato's picture

Ah your memory serves you well.
That being the slaughter that was to be Suncorp 2016.
The day the young lambs beared their teeth.
Lambs to the slaughter it was not.
Those young lambs have memories too.

Don't forget to clean up that junk under your bed when you get home.
You just might need the space.

Coach Potato's picture

It's time.
They've done it.

Thats good hook has obviously listened to your website comments on cartwrights best position when those dynamite dreams explode you will be without any excuse i reckon milf won't be disappointed.

Steel Panther's picture

Cartwright can only improve after last week Coach...he had a dreadful afternoon.....

pabdul's picture

Penrith frustrate me on paper pretty much best team. but quick fixes aint the answer. cartwright in form is good but unfortunately hes not. last year moylan was nsw first choice fullback he got dropped for tedesco in game 3. but because of injury to reynolds they in front of all others gave him the 6 jersey. with Maloney ageing and nsw building you need to persist with moylan at 6. best option for nsw and panthers.

christine's picture

I'm changing 2 more of my tips i'm now taking roosters instead of warriors & cowboys instead of eels ...

The Thinker's picture

Queenslanders rejoicing with the news that Paul Gallen is considering playing State of Origin again this year.

NSW won three series in a row from 2003-2005, then Paul Gallen started his Origin career. During this period Queensland won 10 of 11. The only year they didn't win (2014), Cronulla won the wooden spoon.

He's a black cat walking under a ladder.

a's picture

What Paul Gallen is playing Origin this year I dont think thats fair

Coach Potato's picture

Roosters must have frustrated you a tad last year then Pads.
Whilst they were contemplating challenging for the spoon, you are excused for not taking too much notice of what was happening up the top.

Cartwright at #6 is no quick fix. It was the move the made their season.

Coach Potato's picture

Forget about Gallen, it's Pearce's stats that Maroons should be cheering about.

mark ashford's picture

"a" I'll stay in the comp but exempt myself from any prizes.
Should I be lucky enough to get there (unlikely) I''ll flick pass to the next in line.

Coach Potato's picture

I'll be in UK for game III.
My first day-time Origin.
11am kickoff.

Makes me think that a day time Origin game, played on a sunny Sunday afternoon would be great.

Origin BBQs everywhere.
