Round nine selections

Brisbane Broncos vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – Suncorp Stadium

The Panthers were pre-season premiership favourites but have won only twice this season, and only against poor opposition. We salivated at the potential of this Panthers backline but they've scored only ten tries in those six losing games. Something is missing. Trent Merrin has earned himself another Test jersey but he's missed 14 tackles in his last three games. He has some (bad) company in that Panthers pack as Campbell-Gillard and Peter Wallace have been found out in defence in recent weeks too. I expect the Broncos to focus on that, with Milford and Nikorima ready to expose the Panthers right up the hi-diddle diddle. The Broncos have had an extra day to prepare and are preparing at home. The logical tip.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Broncos 34 defeated Panthers 18

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles – Friday night – Allianz Stadium

Note that the Rabbitohs are playing this home game away from home, although Manly fans are notoriously poor travellers so the Bunnies should have the majority of the support in the crowd. The shoulder charge by Burgess (George) was deemed worse than the shoulder charge by Burgess (Sam).  George takes a seat on the sideline as a consequence. Manly have surprised most of us (especially me) with the quality and consistency of their performances this season. I have to accept they'll turn up to play...and they're good enough. The Cherry-Evans/Green partnership in the halves is working, and their fullback has slotted in to fill the space once filled by Brett Stewart. The local lad looks like he'll be wearing the number one jersey on the northern beaches for the next decade. This is a football team, and I'm tipping them here.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 4

Result – Sea Eagles 46 defeated Rabbitohs 8

North Queensland Cowboys vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

All eyes will be on the Cowboys line-up on Friday night, with Jonathan Thurston named on the extended bench. Rugby League may be a team game, but Thurston is among a handful of players that can make a mockery of that truth. I've tipped against the Eels in their last two victories and I'm taking them on again. Surely I'll get it right...eventually. Coen Hess has replaced Gavin Cooper as the Cowboys try-scoring back-rower – he's racked up 6 tries in 6 games. With that in mind, the Eels will be watching Hess like a hawk, so it's probably time to back Gavin Cooper in try-scoring markets. It's so darn crazy it just might work.

Verdict – Cowboys by 4

Result – Eels 26 defeated Cowboys 6

Gold Coast Titans vs Newcastle Knights – Saturday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

15th plays 16th but fans of both teams can, at the very least, appreciate the efforts of both sides. While both are competing against superior opponents, the Titans do appear to have more upside. The Titans forwards look set to dominate, and one has to assume that Peats, Taylor, Roberts, Hayne and Elgey (off the bench) can create enough try-scoring opportunities on the back of that.

Verdict – Titans by 10

Result – Titans 38 defeated Knights 8

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

For some time I've had doubts about the ability of the Bulldogs to cross the stripe. Thus far in season 2017 they are averaging a snifter more than 15 points per game. That's not enough, particularly against the Raiders who are racking up (on average) 25 points per game. That's a lot of points for a team who have lost as many games as they've won, and the Bulldogs haven't scored 25 or more points in a game all year. You score more points than your opponent and you win folks...it's not rocket surgery.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Bulldogs 16 defeated Raiders 10

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks – Saturday night – Leichhardt Oval

Aaron Woods has announced when he will make his announcement (I'm disappointed he didn't announce when he was going to announce when he will make his announcement but I'm hard to please). I suspect he's holding off until after he has played this game at his 'spritual home'. Given that, I'm expecting a bit of a battle here and I've got this game pencilled in as the match of the round. The Sharks will be keen to win after the shock loss last week, and the stripey cats could step up for Woodsy. The Sharks are clearly the better team and I'm tipping them, but I'm expecting a closer contest than most.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 22 defeated Tigers 16

New Zealand Warriors vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium

Where the bloodity heckity heck are my team lists for the Sunday games? Sheezus McSneezus won't somebody think of the Thinker? Anyhoo...the four teams playing on Sunday are the same four teams that played on ANZAC Day, which seems fair. And I think it's fair to say that the two ANZAC Day games gave us the highest standard of NRL we saw for the round – perhaps everyone just lifted given the occasion. Now these sides have to lift again, and I'll take a little punt on the Warriors having a little more to play for this weekend. They're at home where they are an entirely different proposition and there is an ANZAC Test coming up.

Verdict – Warriors by 2

Result – Warriors 14 defeated Roosters 13

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Melbourne Storm – Sunday afternoon – WIN Stadium

Again no team lists are available at the time of writing so I'm shooting fish in a very dark barrel with this prediction. One thing I do know is that Gareth Widdop is out for six weeks. I can't say that means the Dragons can't win, but it certainly makes it an awful lot harder. As for the Storm, they are a pretty predictable piece of machinery regardless of who laces on the boots. I may be in the dark, but it's dark purple.

Verdict – Storm by 10

Result – Storm 34 defeated Dragons 22

Wally Lewis - round nine selections (in bold)

Hi All,

Submitting my tips last minute!

Broncos – They’re the better team but I backed the Panthers last week and they didn’t pull through, so this is probably the week that they win and prove me wrong.

Sea Eagles – They’re a better bet than the Rabbitohs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bunnies pull it off, they have a knack of doing it each time I tip against them... and losing when I do tip them.

Cowboys – I like their form, but a win by the Eels is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Titans – The best of two evils, I think they’ll pull it off.

Bulldogs – I don’t support any one club but if I did, it might be the Bulldogs.

Sharks – I reckon they’ll be looking to redeem themselves from last week.

Warriors – This week they’re at home and ready for a win.

Storm – Can’t go past them at the moment.

Good luck everyone!

Fortress's picture

Good luck mark and rocket I've tipped the broncos to win then watch the footy show.

Milford has to step up a big game from him and if the forwards can win the advantage line and control the game, then the back line can do the rest.

The inclusion of kahu gives the team another strike weapon, another thing the broncos must do is play an expansive game that's what your team is so strong at very similar style to my team the eagles .

Go get em !!!!!!!!!;;

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin Fortress.
Each to his own and he feels things might affect one with banter here.
You don't have to be sorry, I know how it is being a Sea Eagle.

Again Fortress, all you need to do with private email, is ask Thinker if he can send it to me. That way it is all discreet and not violated or abused.
You need to give the permission. I did it last time and it backfired like a T-Model Ford with a cracker up its clacker.

Hello everyone, my tips for this week are:

Broncos by 10- Broncos too good for sluggish Panthers. Like I said last week, Panthers will get the wins that they're after, but it won't be this game.

Sea Eagles by 4- Rabbitohs were very unlucky last week and will be looking to bounce back after last week. George Burgess is out suspended which is a huge blow for the Rabbitohs. Manly, who have been pretty consistent this year will come away with the win in a close game.

Cowboys by 2- Jeez, I was thinking to pick Parra for the upset a few days ago, even yesterday, and even today. But I will go for the Cowboys at home in a thrilling game.

Titans by 8- Titans will be too good against the valiant Knights side.

Raiders by 12- Raiders have too much attacking flair for the Bulldogs who haven't been scoring much points this season. Will be an entertaining forward battle which I believe the Bulldogs have the edge in, but the Bulldogs will be chasing points in this one and will fail in the process.

Sharks by 8- Tigers may get the upset win in this one. But, I don't think that they will, Sharks' style of play will get them over the line here to bounce back from last week.

Roosters by 2- Both teams are backing up from their tough ANZAC day matches last week. Warriors to fight with plenty of spirit but Roosters too classy here in which will be an incredibly close and entertaining game.

And Storm by 8- Well, I'm going against my beloved Dragons this week. This two teams too will be backing up from their tough ANZAC day encounters. How good was it when the Dragons scored that try converted which sent it to extra time but unfortunately having our hearts broken in extra time. Widdop out will have a huge effect on us. But I expect all of the boys to play their roles and hopefully play their roles well enough for a win over the Storm. But, unfortunately, I just don't see it against a classy side like the Storm who have a full strength team under their belt now. Will be a great table-topping clash. I will love to see the boys win. Storm are the safest to tip in my eyes though.

God luck with everyone's teams this week and with everyone's tips this week.

Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel a blow out ouchhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

OK big Pete will do mate!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Thanks Fortress!
Half time and the Broncs are probably playing their best game of the season and the Panthers one of their worst.
First disallowed try to the Panthers a bit of a mystery. Think it has taken a bit of wind out of their sails.
Watched Hook in the pre game interviews, seemed to lack a bit of interest. There is a problem there.
Broncs seem determined to revenge last years loss.

Rocket Ryan's picture

22 blot

The Thinker's picture

Yeeesh!

The Panthers have lost $12 million over the last two years creating this team. They were okay with that, because they felt that was what they had to do to be a powerhouse in the competition.

On current form they probably should have lost $20 million.

Fortress's picture

Oh well there's always next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Great win by the broncos the game was done ,few concellation trys at the end but the game never in doudt.

The difference of standard by the winner compared to the loser was painfully obvious.

Congrats to mark and rocket on a job well done.

Punt high and follow on!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Broncos need to toughen up in defensive when they are A ahead

Coach Potato's picture

(sigh)

Well done Broncos. Gave you a scare in the 2nd half but not good enough. Not sure about the first try, and Gillett's at the end was wide-receiver stuff.

One bright side is that having to perform a miracle triggered them into action, and they showed what they can do. How they should play from the word go. If they had played that way for even 60 minutes it would have been real close.

Will take another miracle to back to semi contention from here, we are about a Manly 2016 chance (ie snowballs), but they know the style of play that will get them there.

mark ashford's picture

Coach your Panthers looked ok in the second half probably because the Broncs were worn out scoring tries.
You had some ref help with that second try. They must have been feeling sorry for you.
Maybe Gould's 5 year plan should have been a 15 year plan, then you might get there.

Coach Potato's picture

Yes, Mark there was some ref divine intervention in the first no try too.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Teal??????? Colour me confused.

Steel Panther's picture

I thought the Thinker warned everyone about playing the ball and not the man? Disagree with one another, but why make it personal?

Coach Potato's picture

Steel, noone gets to question the refs integrity on the field, and seems no one is gonna question the integrity here either.

What is the most pathetic is others applauding his behaviour. Sad, Embarrassing, and Shameful.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Coach Pototo Coach Potato Coach Potato a loose carry cost you the first try as for your great second half effort we were thinking about next week let me tell you about young cleary no state of origin for him this year as you predicted last year he needs to get through the second year blues cause that is where he is go back and dust off te marie martin because cartwrights effect wasn't good at 6.
Moylon tried to make a difference but to little to late dynamite dreaming by you good news is i have that bloody card maybe you and gus gould could dust off roycee simmons to talk about when he scored in a grand final defelct everyones attention from your team and the empty trophy cabinet
I have to use the H word twice Hopelessly hopeless.

Coach Potato's picture

Hate to have to agree.

Coach Potato's picture

(my two H's back)

Coach Potato's picture

It was a try though.
It's play on in the field of play, right?

Rocket Ryan's picture

Loose carry over the line is what the bumker ruled but the talent on the panther list should of got over it the broncos made the panthers pay for some bad mistakes your problems are the halves clearys bombs were ineffective broncos put pressure on him.

Tailspin's picture

Shit, shit, shit.
Sorry Thinker, In hospital with my boy all yesterday and last night and forgot all about the tips. Oh well, life goes on. Here were my tips anyway.

pabdul's picture

hey baggy
ive had a teal experience. we just moved into out first home and my wife decorated while i was at work. when i got back i was impressed by the colour schemes. in the tv room i said i love the brown and aqua and at that moment it was liked she transferred into a werewolf she screamed its mocca and teal whats the matter with you.
i did return 5 mins later and say i love the mocca and teal she said now im just being a smart arse.

Fortress's picture

Stop gulit tripping u bag other people and there clubs on this site yet you always from day dot pass the buck on someone else.

Coach come to reality ur team is the most over rated in the comp u were soundly beaten last night you havnt won a comp in donkeys years why blame the rest of us its not my fault or anybody else's fault have u thought bout jumping ship how bout if u started to support let's say the sharks there you go you can jump on the band wagon the champions of last year great club im sure the shie would welcome you with open arms so there you go everyone I was been nice and helpful ok .

You win some and you lose some that's life the world shouldn't be held to account if ones team is not good enough!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Well there u go strike me pink now padbul has jumped on the coach and baggy pants band wagon, our comedian on this site padbul Joan rivers u are not ok .

Strange how we will always have a little gang on a site that seem to have the same IQ.

Bag my spelling out as much as you want padbul but as I have said in the past and now since you belong to the potato brain and baggy pants party if u bag my team out or me accept the same from me back at you comprehend!!!!!!!!!!!!

pabdul's picture

easy mate i didnt know anything about a spelling mistake i just saw a msg from baggy regarding teal and responded. i have no sides i communicate with anyone i dont take things personal. so if i communate with people u dont like then im against you?

Fortress's picture

No padbul Mr baggy pants was bagging my spelling out I know I should go back and spell check but sometimes couldn't give a rats.

I was just saying and hope u agree if some on this site wanna bag others and there team they should accept it in return right.

I mean coach has been rude disrespectful since day dot on here attacking people on this site so when someone turns around and stands up to him like I have he doesn't like it.

I'll tell you something about me padbul I love my eagles been going for them since I was knee high,

But I also love the game will watch other teams as well sometimes you win sometimes you lose I mean we all want to be winners but the problem here is when ones team loses why blame the others on here, why blame others behaviour when his behaviour has caused pain and stress for others on this site why pass the buck he talks about me paints me out to be someone I'm not yet in reality he is talking about himself I'm not a fool it takes a lot to pull the wool over my eyes padbul my mum always says to me since I was a kid always stick up for yourself people may make fum because u may be different but your special in my eyes so most of my life since I was a kid I've been short sighted wearing glasses at school wasnt easy I've had to work very hard on my spelling which sometimes upsets me but I won't lie down for a person or 2 on here that have an agenda, and that is to did credit anyone who has a passion for there team and stands to them.

I love this site it gets me away from the stress and daily grind as I have a high position. Job this is somewhere where I can express my self im not perfect no one is but one thing I can't stand is someone who can't come to terms with there own faults and actions

Have a good one padbul chat soon!!!!!!!!!!

pabdul's picture

mate i hear you
first of all no one knows about you unless you tell them. people have made it clear about their conditions and we can use sensitivity around them. some people rely on this site for me its only a hobby
you know i dont like manly but i say it in jest. ive surfed there and even know ex players for brookie u shouldnt take it to heart. i dont agree with greenies scientology or john Farnham combacks but i dont hate the people involved.
as far as me im sarcastic and as my dad used to say im a cheeky bugger thats me and im not going to change anytime soon but im no comedian just a happy person.
my advice to you 8s lifes too short
lets get back to the footy

Doggie's picture

Glad thats sorted, good story about the teal padbul. How good was jimmy the jet last night. As gus likes to say, you cant beat speed. Hope he didnt go out and celebrate. Thats enough Qld kissing, how stupid can you be calling the cops on yourself for drink driving, Qlder. Not that i condone drink driving. Go the doggies.

Fortress's picture

All good padbul be yourself its cool its a great site with good people on here look its OK not to like each others clubs but when it becomes personal and one can't take others success than maybe sport isn't for them, you are going to win or lose unless in case of a draw.

All good I enjoy ur posts witty and full of things from the past keep on keeping on mate.

Its Friday and the mighty eagles to lock horns with rabbits should be a great battle it always has been and tonight should be a cracker !!!!

Go the mighty sea eagles!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yes everyone should like and hate whatever clubs they want as longer as we respect other opinions

Steel Panther's picture

I hear ya Coach...I hear ya....

Fortress's picture

Isn't it good to get some help from a fellow club supporter.

Now if I was to get help from fellow mighty eagles supporters it would be deemed a travisty of justice.

And the word integrity was bought up for god sake lets all look back on his posts from day dot can any one tell me where is the integrity there.

It beggers to believe!!!!!!!!!!!

a's picture

Yeah Coach do you agree with what I just said

kate's picture

From memory Steel Panther is in NZL and a Warriors supporter.

Fortress's picture

Ok then thought with the name panther attached he goes for Penrith my mistake.

jt playing tonight sounds like danger on the horizon.

A great night of footy comingup with old great rivals the mighty eagles vs the rabbits first up .

Then johnathon Thurston's cowboys in a training run.

Have s great night everyone!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

"a"' great night everyone!!!!!!!! fixed that up just in case of the spelling police!!!!!!!!

Mary S's picture

Hi Fortress, I hope for you and for me that the Eagles win tonight as I tipped them in the work comp I still take part in and could surely do with more success this week!! Cheers to all
Mary S

Steel Panther's picture

The Thinker's picture

So I deleted a couple of the comments from Fortress because they were a little bit over the top and personal. Sadly that meant his reference to teal isn't there anymore.

That means all the teal comments that follow seem out of context, but I'm leaving them there because I teally enjoyed reading them.

Fortress,

I can see that Coach is making an effort to play the ball and not the man. I'm prepared to give him a chance and I ask you to do the same.

You both love the game and I'd like you both here...as long as you don't kill each other.

All the best

mark ashford's picture

Hi Folks
The Fortress/Coach/Baggy thing just won't go away.
We all make spelling mistakes so how about cutting a little slack OK.
Coach seems to be trying to be nice so how about the same for him.

Manly to have a win tonight over those naughty Rabbits.
I accused Sam of the shoulder charge when it was George.
Those Burgess boys all look the same to me....huge and menacing.

Sorry Baggy but the Cows will just sneak home against your Eels.
Townsville is a tough road trip...and it's hot!
Good luck to all 4 teams tonight.

Coach you we're gracious in defeat.

mark ashford's picture

THINKER just read your post you and I are on the same page.
Ah I think that's page 2!
