Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium
Tipping NRL results is fraught with difficulty at the best of times. Early season games are more difficult, and this particular game is more difficult still. We have sixteen (yes...sixteen) interchange players named for this game, so the make-up of the final seventeen for both sides is anyone's guess. A couple of inclusions on the extended bench to keep your eyes on. For the Sharks, Daniel Mortimer is available as a possible alternative number 9 to the youngster Jayden Brailey. Valentine Holmes is on that bench too – so he could slot into that backline somewhere at a pinch. For the Broncos, David Mead is named on the bench, but it wouldn't surprise me if he starts somewhere and Tautau Moga doesn't. As named Moga is lining up against Jack Bird so that's a match-up to keep an eye on...if it happens. Both sides return from unsuccessful tours of duty in the UK, and it's hard to get a read on that form so I'm choosing not to read it at all. In recent years the Sharks have started their seasons slowly – they haven't won a round one clash since 2013 and they lost two of their first three last year. The Broncos won away from home in round one last year – defeating the Eels 17-4. That proved to be good form as the season played out. But that was last year and this is not (trust me...I checked). In 2017, someone other than Corey Parker needs to take on the role of Corey Parker. Wallace looked likely, but someone needs to take on the role of Wallace too. Meanwhile the Sharks are without two of their all-important spine (Ennis and Barba) that saw them claim their maiden premiership last season. The Broncos spine is intact, and Ben Hunt needs to show the rugby league world he's worth 45 million dollars. Perhaps that proves the difference. Note the weather too – Sydney weather can be diabolical this time of year and it's not pretty at Shark Park at the best of times. I'm expecting a low-scoring, old-school grind to open the season.
Verdict – Broncos by 2
Result – Broncos 26 defeated Sharks 18
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Belmore Sports Ground
As Queensland captain, Cameron Smith gets to hold plenty of trophies aloft, but he hasn't held the main prize above his head since 2012 when the purple machine beat their round one opponents. Both sides have played finals football every year since, but the Storm, as they were in 2012, have always been the slightly better side. I'm quite certain that will hold true again in 2017, but if the Storm have an achilles heel it's their second row. They'll be without Kevin Proctor (Titans) and Tohu Harris (injured) on Friday night, and those two always gave the Storm a little bit of variety in what can otherwise be a somewhat predictable attack. It's a niggling doubt, but not enough to change my selection. The Bulldogs starting thirteen look pretty darn good, on paper at least. But much of this side has been lacing on the boots for the Bulldogs for a while now, and they always seem a shandy sort of a premiership contender. A big watch on Munster in the number 6 jersey for the Storm. If he goes well (and I expect he will) a Melbourne spine of Smith, Cronk, Munster and Slater can go all the way. Another game of wet weather football looks likely and the Storm are pretty good at grinding out a win when they have to. In 2016 the Storm won in round one by 18-16 and in 2015 they won by 12-4. Back the total points unders folks...if that's your thing.
Verdict – Storm by 4
Result – Storm 12 defeated Bulldogs 6
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
Tigers have to play without Tim Simona...Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind, I always get it up, for the touch, of the younger kind.
Rugby league is rarely about one man but, for this game at least, all eyes will be on Robbie Farah. He wants this and he wants this bad, but I want Scarlett Johansson pretty bad too – and I think Robbie and I will have to get used to disappointment. Outside the obvious exception (Inglis) the Rabbitohs backline look out of their depth to my eye. The Tigers have to play without Tim Simona, but that backline is oozing with attacking flair. They started season 2016 well and I expect more of the same this year. The Bunnies are the favourites but I can't see them winning this. And that song by The Knack was pretty bloody rude.
Verdict – Tigers by 8
Result – Tigers 34 defeated Rabbitohs 18
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – UOW Jubilee Oval
I have no idea how to pronounce the new name of Jubilee Oval (U OWe me an explanation Dragons fans). Mind you, it's not the silliest stadium name this season (more on that later). No-one expects the Panthers to lose this game, and the only reason they would is if the Panthers don't think they can lose either. The Panthers forwards will hold their own and their backline is a class above. I'm not expecting a gap job on Saturday afternoon – the Dragons often put in a good one in their first outing of the year – but the cats will prevail.
Verdict – Panthers by 10
Result – Dragons 42 defeated Panthers 10
North Queensland Cowboys vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
The Raiders got on quite a run at the back end of last season, and if they were to pick up where they left off you'd be keen to consider them here. Their trial form has been so bad it's impossible to take it seriously, but it's worth noting they won just two of their first seven away games last year. Note also that the Cowboys lost only once at home last season (to the Storm). In their first four games at home the Cowboys racked up 140 points while conceding only 32. Take note of the all important tropical weather too. This game is at night but the minimums in Townsville at this time of year are still in the mid twenties and there'll be plenty of humidity to temper the enthusiasm of those vikings from the south. I'm pretty confident the Cowboys will win and win well, but it's still the game of the round.
Verdict – Cowboys by 14
Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Raiders 16
Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – CBus SUper Stadium
Confession time folks – I had forgotten that the Titans played finals football last year...I blame those two beers I had at Christmas. I expect both these sides to improve this season. The Titans have recruited well and the Roosters will be keen to move on from the debacle that was their season in 2016. I'm leaning slightly to the tricolours but not heavily so. Most of the forwards are available, Mitchell Pearce (we're told) has his head screwed on at the minute and the addition of Gordon at fullback sees them with close to the best backline in the NRL. A game to keep your eye on – I'm anticipating a high-quality contest.
Verdict – Roosters by 4
Result – Roosters 32 defeated Titans 18
New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
This game may be at Mt Smart, but I doubt we will learn much on Sunday afternoon. The Knights are a very warm favourite for the wooden spoon and a Warriors victory by 50 could mean next to nothing in a weeks time. The Knights have been pretty good at the trials, but tipping on trial form is a formula for failure. I am keen to watch youngster Ata Hingano in the halves alongside Shaun Johnson. Better judges than I rate him as a promising young talent, and he gets an opportunity to show us his wares in the absence of Kieran Foran. Beyond that, I hope the Knights show some promise and the Warriors show some ticker. We may get neither. Why don't the Kiwis use Bound for Glory by Angry Anderson as their team song? Oh yeah...that soccer team in Perth. And yes, that is a young Anthony Mundine in the film clip.
Verdict – Warriors by 28
Result – Warriors 26 defeated Knights 22
Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Lottoland
Lottoland! Brookvale Oval is now called Lottoland. The Sea Eagles are pocketing a seven figure sum for their trouble so I can't begrudge them the opportunity, but Lottoland! This will take some getting used to. I don't need to buy a lottery ticket when the Parramatta Eels are the outsider on Sunday afternoon, because that is, IMHO, giving money away. If Norman plays the Eels win, and he's been named in the 7 jersey. That's all I need to know. That under-rated Eels pack and the fastest backline in the NRL will take care of the rest,
Verdict – Eels by 8
Result – Eels 20 defeated Sea Eagles 12

Hi everyone,
Yee-Hah! Round 1 is tantalisingly close. These are happy days, happy days indeed. Have done some rudimentary “research” and not really any the wiser on who’s gonna win this week so I’m just going to pick ‘em how I walk. That is, left-right, left-right, left-right or in other words, home-away, home-away, home-away and so on.
Living in the “AFL dominated” West, you can’t just pop into the local newsagent and grab a fixtures card so Newbie had to lovingly create one himself in an excel spreadsheet. And a fine piece of artistry it is too I must say. So, my tips for the opening round are:
Sharks
Storm
Rabbitohs
Panthers
Cowboys
Roosters
Warriors
Eels
Pretty pleased 2016 is finished and my BBB can start rebuilding to former glory days (hopefully). Just quickly for those who don’t know, BBB stands for (B)eautiful (B)oys from (B)ondi. Obviously that makes me a Roosters man.
When I did some quick research for this opening round I was surprised one pundit from a certain online bookie had them as his tip to win this year’s premiership. As much as I’d like to have that happen, I’m just not feelin’ the vibe. Hey, I hope it happens but really? Newbie will be tickled red, white and blue if they just make the top 4.
I might take a peek at what the prices are for the Chooks to make the 8, the 4 and the GF and have a semi-serious think about having a small dabble. I’ll most probably chicken out (no pun intended) but I’ll have a think about it nevertheless. Not much else to say at the minute so I’ll just love and leave ya. Bring it on!
OK kids, good luck with your tipping for Round 1 and may your team win by 40 points!
P.S. Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations? Hmmm…

Awesome. Every year. Every year I basically say the same thing to everyone that this will be my final time on here and what do I do ? Every year I come back on here like nothing else has happened. I have literally become that one drunk person you used to see at every party growing up who says he going to go after he's finished his drink but then spends entire night standing next to fridge drinking everybody else's beer. "Yeah, yeah, guys, I'm going go now, yeah thanks again, yeah, I'm leaving now, alright, I'll catch you kids later, yeah great party, great party, seriously bye now, so long, bye, no I don't know when I'll be back, cool, I could be gone for a while as I have few things I need to look into first while I'm there before I'm able to get anything done, yeah, bye, so long dude, see you around, laters, yeah I know precisely what you mean man is this some kind of party or what, goodbye..." It's so embrassing. Seriously I don't know why I do it to myself. Let's get on with this week's tips ...

Thank you Mr Thinker, the link works fine. I'll be be doing my tips shortly. Gotta hand it to Footy Chick there’s no slack in your rope. The first round is always a lottery. As the saying goes, a drought usually ends a flood so I'm leaning towards the broncos against the Sharks. I've said it before, I cant believe no-one is actually rating the Bronco's that high? The roster looks amazing as well as having a coach as handy as your shirt pockets. I feel Melbourne Storm and the Broncos will be the bench mark this year, too much experience with two of the best coaches in the game.
Catch up soon cheers from Mr Awesome

Good to see you back and posting JR. We need passionate club men populating the pages here.
I'm going to wheel out my first round excuse as being my head is full of flu and not working as well as it should.
Sharks - Optimisim for the first game. Brisbane on the road against a team that has had a few weeks to watch how they got beaten over seas.
Storm - The Dogs forwards are bigger, and there seems to be no end to them coming off the bench and rolling forward. But I can't get excited about the rest of the team. As much as I can't stand some of the Storm players the at least have a few more facets in attack.
Tigers - I think that the Bunnies are going to be close but are going to lose to the youth of the Tigers, a more established halves pairing and no Farah, puts the Tigers in a good place to start the year.
Panthers - Hard no to like the Panthers in this game. Spare play makers stuffed in at all spots. Even if you take out the new signings and just filled the team with locals they are going to be tough to beat. Like Wallace as hooker too.
Cowboys - How hard was it to write that name. I want the Raiders to get up, and they should have more than enough ability and youth and desire to do so. But game 1 for the Cowboys is at home and that swings it for me. Dare I say it another stinking golden point game for the NQ team.
Titans - Lie, Cheat, Steal! the motto of Eddie Guerrero can be perfectly added to the Titans, Theft of a few good Parra players, Cheating with the Salary cap with Scott Prince, and Lying about it to all and sundry. I think they can get up this weekend. Not happy about it but some of the things JH did at the end of last season shows that he still has the ability to defend the try line effectively.
Warriors - I think that the world would love to see the Knights blow the Warriors off the park. At Mt Smart, there is only one team that can blow the Warriors chances of winning, the Warriors. The Knights have to hold tight, show faith and these young bodies are going to start winning and winning well, but those days are a little way off yet.
Eels - Here goes another 24 games where it makes no difference who we can field, who we are playing or where, that I'll be backing the BOYS to the hilt. Think we can really show the comp how well we are going to go in this one. The only thing that will frustrate me is the left edge of Jennings and Sami. Shuffle French into the wing, Gutherson back to Fullback, and Kenny Edwards to 5/8 when he's fit and there is your line up post Sami. CARN THE BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone, I am the guy who changed his name about 5 times last season. Already no games in and I've changed my name yet again this season to Dragons-Fanboy from St George Illawarra Dragonsfan4ever. But I promise you guys that this will be my name from now on. Anyways now with the footy, it's awesome being back tipping this season. I enjoyed most of my summer watching the summer of cricket. Now back with the footy, my tips for round 1 are:
Broncos by 2- As you guys should all know, the first round is a very hard round to choose from. A great way to start the season with the premiers against Bennett's Broncos. I think the Broncos will win in a low-scoring close one.
Storm by 10- The Storm to ruin the Bulldogs' visit to Belmore with yet another season-opener victory.
Rabbitohs by 14- Yes, Robbie Farah against his former side, now this is going to be some battle. But, I think that the Rabbitohs will start strong here and get the win. I think that Robbie Farah will play well in this one.
The mighty Dragons by 4- The mighty Dragons to get the upset of the round. The Dragons usually get hyped for these openers and this season will be no different. But, this time we'll get the win rather than the tight losses that we have suffered of the hands of the Storm the last two seasons.
Cowboys by 6- The Cowboys to start strong here with a tight win over the Raiders.
Roosters by 12- The Roosters have close to the best backline in the comp to follow up with a strong forward pack. The Roosters to start the season strong here with a win over the Titans.
Warriors by 18- I really feel sorry for the Knights, I really do. They have been the dreadful wooden spooners for the last two seasons with last season being the toughest season of the toughest. I wish the Knights all the best this season. Sorry Knights fans but I think that your team will start poorly with a big loss of the hands of the Warriors.
Finally, the Sea eagles by 8- It's really weird knowing that the Sea Eagles' new home ground is named Lottoland. Anyways, the boys from Brookie will start with a win over the Eels here.
Awesome. Good luck with everyone's tips this season and for everyone's teams this week. I really hope that I'm on the tipping ladder this season. And to finish off, welcome to the ones who have joined this site this season it's a pleasure that your here.
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two games that gave me the most thought was Souths and Wests and Manly and Parramatta for different reasons. Even without Reynolds Souths should scrape home only on the view I rate the McGuire a far better coach than Taylor. Taylor can be so contrary he could easily float upstream. He's got footy smarts now he needs people smarts. Now Manly over over Parra, I think Manly may have more in the tank towards the second half than Parra. I don't rate Barret yet, but I like him and he may not look like a chicken but he still has to shed some of his chook yard ways. Anyway, picking the games is still as hard as bagging flies. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Rabbitohs by 6 Souths finished of the season strong last year and will start of with a win here
Panthers by 10 Panthers will be a strong team here and will start of with a win
Cowboys by 12 Cowboys will be way to strong in Townsville
Titans by 1 I think Titans will win in a thriller here
Warriors by 20 Warriors will win no contest here
Eels by 6 I think Eels will start off strong this season

Hey Everybody - good to see the blasts from the past back with us.
Welcome to the newcomers and great to see some of us kept the fort and communicated through the off season break.
Yes, I know some are commenting about the new name at Brookie.
I guess the naming rights is one thing about several grounds lately and if Manly are to keep Brookvale Oval as their home ground, you have to open the door to corporate sponsorship and ground improvements might follow.
So when you come to Lottoland - don't be expecting to win Lotto, as you might leave empty handed and with no comp points. Many aren't rating Manly to finish in the 6 or 8 - look out when this sides clicks as you might have second thoughts.
Cheers and all keep well. Good luck for 2017 season.

Where is people's faith in the Warriors actually coming from?
It surely is not coming from their starting number 6 household name, Ata Hingano.
It surely is not coming from their starting number 5 household name, Ken Maumalo.
It surely is not coming from their starting number 11 household name, Bunty Afoa.
It surely is not coming from the fact Tuivasa-Sheck has not played since round 7 of last year.
It surely is not coming from the fact that the Warriors lost their last 4 games of 2016, 3 of those at Mt Smart with a combined score of 64 - 117.
It surely is not coming from the fact that the Warriors have lost the opening round of the season 16 times out of 22 attempts.
So where is it coming from?
If you are all such experts, what have you got to say for yourself?
Or is it all about Newcastle? Because they look ok.
A much fitter looking Trent Hodkinson is forming some very good combinations with youngster Brock Lamb. Origin star Dane Gagai, and potential Origin debutant Nathan Ross are in the backline. Forwards are bolstered by Manly's Jamie Buhrer, and Josh Starling.

My second year on this great Mr Thinker’s site [cheers] and yeh it's starting to feel like home now. Just wanted to clarify that I am a Dragons supporter and have been following them since 1969, grew up in the central west near Mudgee. Now being a country lad, I don’t really care what anyone calls me as long as you call me for a feed and a cold one. It may seem like I’m hot as a stolen tamale on the Brisbane side, but actually in fact I’m just a huge fan of Wayne Bennett. I still haven’t got over Alfie Lingers song in the 1993 grand final over the Dragons even though Bennett played a role behind the scene. Apparently, what fired Brisbane up was a so called sheet leaked to Bennett with some not so nice criticism on the Walters Boys living in the shadow of Langer. Now apparently, Bennett being as bright as a new coin had actually got hold of some Dragons stationary and made it up himself and got those Broncos fired up. By the way, I forgave Bennett for that when he got the Dragons another premiership. Anyway moving on, for those of you interested in reading it, the Mudgee area has a proud rugby league heritage dating back to 1919 including some great football players that have long been forgotten. For example Ray Stehr who was captain and coach with Mudgee in 1934. He also represented Country, played 117 representative matches including 11 tests. He was known as being among one of the best forwards of this great game and about as friendly on the field as a blackberry bush. Another obscure but fine player was Jack Hartwell, another forward; this tough player had horns holding up his halo.
Anyway, that’s it from me for now. Catch up shortly.
Cheers from Mr Awesome.

Tommy Raudonikis really? He's losing the plot methinks. Uses the ‘F’ word on live TV. Ok, a lot of people think that criticism is coming from a few precious people, but in this day and age, there isn’t room for that anymore, especially when you want women, children and families to follow this great game.
Next he gives Ben Hunt an undeserved serve. The Bronco’s just won and Ben Hunt played his part yet he gives a pretty bad character assessment of him and the money he’ll be getting with the Dragons. As far as I’m concerned that’s none of his business and you can’t blame any player for doing what he can to secure his future including the financial side. Ok, you may be critical of player’s performance but why get personal? He did the same with Robbie Farah and Laurie Daley a few years ago. Couldn’t believe the spray he gave about how Ben Hunt performed...really. He said he had a bad game...fairdinkum. Hunt was solid without being flash, not a bad first week back playing real footy.
Fox sports said Hunt made one handling error and two missed tackles during 80 minutes of tough footy, first week back. They also said Hunt set up a try, busted two tackles, made 283 metres off 12 kicks and guess what his team won.
I really think it’s time Tommy Raudonikis gets off TV, takes a chill pill and pulls his head in. He is just becoming is a chin musician in his old age and playing out of key.
Cheers from Mr Awesome
