Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos – Thursday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium
Tipping NRL results is fraught with difficulty at the best of times. Early season games are more difficult, and this particular game is more difficult still. We have sixteen (yes...sixteen) interchange players named for this game, so the make-up of the final seventeen for both sides is anyone's guess. A couple of inclusions on the extended bench to keep your eyes on. For the Sharks, Daniel Mortimer is available as a possible alternative number 9 to the youngster Jayden Brailey. Valentine Holmes is on that bench too – so he could slot into that backline somewhere at a pinch. For the Broncos, David Mead is named on the bench, but it wouldn't surprise me if he starts somewhere and Tautau Moga doesn't. As named Moga is lining up against Jack Bird so that's a match-up to keep an eye on...if it happens. Both sides return from unsuccessful tours of duty in the UK, and it's hard to get a read on that form so I'm choosing not to read it at all. In recent years the Sharks have started their seasons slowly – they haven't won a round one clash since 2013 and they lost two of their first three last year. The Broncos won away from home in round one last year – defeating the Eels 17-4. That proved to be good form as the season played out. But that was last year and this is not (trust me...I checked). In 2017, someone other than Corey Parker needs to take on the role of Corey Parker. Wallace looked likely, but someone needs to take on the role of Wallace too. Meanwhile the Sharks are without two of their all-important spine (Ennis and Barba) that saw them claim their maiden premiership last season. The Broncos spine is intact, and Ben Hunt needs to show the rugby league world he's worth 45 million dollars. Perhaps that proves the difference. Note the weather too – Sydney weather can be diabolical this time of year and it's not pretty at Shark Park at the best of times. I'm expecting a low-scoring, old-school grind to open the season.
Verdict – Broncos by 2
Result – Broncos 26 defeated Sharks 18
Canterbury Bulldogs vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Belmore Sports Ground
As Queensland captain, Cameron Smith gets to hold plenty of trophies aloft, but he hasn't held the main prize above his head since 2012 when the purple machine beat their round one opponents. Both sides have played finals football every year since, but the Storm, as they were in 2012, have always been the slightly better side. I'm quite certain that will hold true again in 2017, but if the Storm have an achilles heel it's their second row. They'll be without Kevin Proctor (Titans) and Tohu Harris (injured) on Friday night, and those two always gave the Storm a little bit of variety in what can otherwise be a somewhat predictable attack. It's a niggling doubt, but not enough to change my selection. The Bulldogs starting thirteen look pretty darn good, on paper at least. But much of this side has been lacing on the boots for the Bulldogs for a while now, and they always seem a shandy sort of a premiership contender. A big watch on Munster in the number 6 jersey for the Storm. If he goes well (and I expect he will) a Melbourne spine of Smith, Cronk, Munster and Slater can go all the way. Another game of wet weather football looks likely and the Storm are pretty good at grinding out a win when they have to. In 2016 the Storm won in round one by 18-16 and in 2015 they won by 12-4. Back the total points unders folks...if that's your thing.
Verdict – Storm by 4
Result – Storm 12 defeated Bulldogs 6
South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Friday night – ANZ Stadium
Tigers have to play without Tim Simona...Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind, I always get it up, for the touch, of the younger kind.
Rugby league is rarely about one man but, for this game at least, all eyes will be on Robbie Farah. He wants this and he wants this bad, but I want Scarlett Johansson pretty bad too – and I think Robbie and I will have to get used to disappointment. Outside the obvious exception (Inglis) the Rabbitohs backline look out of their depth to my eye. The Tigers have to play without Tim Simona, but that backline is oozing with attacking flair. They started season 2016 well and I expect more of the same this year. The Bunnies are the favourites but I can't see them winning this. And that song by The Knack was pretty bloody rude.
Verdict – Tigers by 8
Result – Tigers 34 defeated Rabbitohs 18
St George Illawarra Dragons vs Penrith Panthers – Saturday afternoon – UOW Jubilee Oval
I have no idea how to pronounce the new name of Jubilee Oval (U OWe me an explanation Dragons fans). Mind you, it's not the silliest stadium name this season (more on that later). No-one expects the Panthers to lose this game, and the only reason they would is if the Panthers don't think they can lose either. The Panthers forwards will hold their own and their backline is a class above. I'm not expecting a gap job on Saturday afternoon – the Dragons often put in a good one in their first outing of the year – but the cats will prevail.
Verdict – Panthers by 10
Result – Dragons 42 defeated Panthers 10
North Queensland Cowboys vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – 1300SMILES Stadium
The Raiders got on quite a run at the back end of last season, and if they were to pick up where they left off you'd be keen to consider them here. Their trial form has been so bad it's impossible to take it seriously, but it's worth noting they won just two of their first seven away games last year. Note also that the Cowboys lost only once at home last season (to the Storm). In their first four games at home the Cowboys racked up 140 points while conceding only 32. Take note of the all important tropical weather too. This game is at night but the minimums in Townsville at this time of year are still in the mid twenties and there'll be plenty of humidity to temper the enthusiasm of those vikings from the south. I'm pretty confident the Cowboys will win and win well, but it's still the game of the round.
Verdict – Cowboys by 14
Result – Cowboys 20 defeated Raiders 16
Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – CBus SUper Stadium
Confession time folks – I had forgotten that the Titans played finals football last year...I blame those two beers I had at Christmas. I expect both these sides to improve this season. The Titans have recruited well and the Roosters will be keen to move on from the debacle that was their season in 2016. I'm leaning slightly to the tricolours but not heavily so. Most of the forwards are available, Mitchell Pearce (we're told) has his head screwed on at the minute and the addition of Gordon at fullback sees them with close to the best backline in the NRL. A game to keep your eye on – I'm anticipating a high-quality contest.
Verdict – Roosters by 4
Result – Roosters 32 defeated Titans 18
New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – Mt Smart Stadium
This game may be at Mt Smart, but I doubt we will learn much on Sunday afternoon. The Knights are a very warm favourite for the wooden spoon and a Warriors victory by 50 could mean next to nothing in a weeks time. The Knights have been pretty good at the trials, but tipping on trial form is a formula for failure. I am keen to watch youngster Ata Hingano in the halves alongside Shaun Johnson. Better judges than I rate him as a promising young talent, and he gets an opportunity to show us his wares in the absence of Kieran Foran. Beyond that, I hope the Knights show some promise and the Warriors show some ticker. We may get neither. Why don't the Kiwis use Bound for Glory by Angry Anderson as their team song? Oh yeah...that soccer team in Perth. And yes, that is a young Anthony Mundine in the film clip.
Verdict – Warriors by 28
Result – Warriors 26 defeated Knights 22
Manly Sea Eagles vs Parramatta Eels – Sunday afternoon – Lottoland
Lottoland! Brookvale Oval is now called Lottoland. The Sea Eagles are pocketing a seven figure sum for their trouble so I can't begrudge them the opportunity, but Lottoland! This will take some getting used to. I don't need to buy a lottery ticket when the Parramatta Eels are the outsider on Sunday afternoon, because that is, IMHO, giving money away. If Norman plays the Eels win, and he's been named in the 7 jersey. That's all I need to know. That under-rated Eels pack and the fastest backline in the NRL will take care of the rest,
Verdict – Eels by 8
Result – Eels 20 defeated Sea Eagles 12

Don't be too hard on Old Tommy for this reason alone.
He was part of State of Origin One - 1980.
Both States knew little or nothing of each other and a lot like run of the mill warfare mentality - you will hate intensely anyone who threatens your territory.
King Wally has mellowed, MG has mellowed, that was their choice.
Tommy hasn't mellowed and that's his choice too. He does like QLD, Cowboys, Titans, or Broncos. Each to their own.
It was a bit far to let rip with the F-bomb though.
As live as you think TV really is, the directors still had time to bleep it out but they didn't. That was a sadder reflection of today's society and any individual swearing. Throw the first stone if you've never sworn before.

I'm hearing you all in regards to Tommy, I grew in his era, watched him play, and played the game myself then. I know he's always been outspoken and he's passionate through and through but I still feel he needs to temper how he says things these days. How do you feel Hunt feels as a young bloke copping that personal stuff from a legend. I believe Tommy doesn't mean to get personal but in this day and age with depression, suicide etc on the rise, it's time to temper old habits methinks.
Cheers from Mr Aeesome

I'm no doctor, just a spectator but what I saw of Inglis last night matched up a lot like Grade 3 on this list. If we here next week it came back Grade 3 then maybe call me Dr Potato.
"...Based on physical examination, MCL injuries are graded in severity on a scale of I to III.
Grade I injuries are incomplete tears of the MCL. The ligament is still intact but stretched, and the symptoms are mild. Patients usually complain of pain with palpation of the MCL.
A grade II MCL tear is a partial or incomplete tear. There is significant pain with valgus stress of the knee and palpation along the medial aspect on the knee over the ligament. Athletes with these tears often complain of knee pain or instability when attempting to cut or pivot.
Grade III tears are complete tears of the MCL. These athletes have significant pain along the medial aspect of the knee. Even deep bending of the knee is uncomfortable. These tears often occur in combination with other injuries in the knee, and complaints of “giving out” or instability with walking, running, or pivoting is common. A knee brace or a knee immobilizer is usually needed for comfort."

Gidday Tigers 717 and all of the other new comers. Those that were here last year witnessed me not having faith in my mighty Rabbit Eating Tigers, this year has started the same.
That is the best round one win for the Tigers since 2006, I was impressed with there spine in Tedesco, Moses and Brooks, hopefully they can maintain that for at least next week.
I watched the start of the footy show on Thursday and I too was shocked with Tommy and his dropping of the F Bomb on live television, totally not needed and I felt a little awkward watching the response from the other panel members. I don't think Fatty heard him due to the face lift that he had pulling the skin too tight from ear to ear blocking his ears.
Anyway folks, 3 games down and it is great to have the best game in the world back, good luck for the rest of the games.

From the Dr's recollection, a season only goes for 6 months.
Is there some crazy thought that Souths will play semis and so GI's season isn't quite over.
Bit disappointed about Origin, when we smash the Maroons to smithereens they will now say they didn't have their best NSW player on the park.

Red V absolutely outstanding. I knew a big loss was on the cards for the Panthers this season, teach them to deal with the expectations. Just didn't realise that it would come in their first game of the season. They should be better for it.
Taking nothing away from the Dragons though, absolutely burned the black cats. Congrats dragons fans.

clearly 2 teams had read the press this week, 1 reacted to the bagging they had got and fronted up (St George), the other obviously got wrapped up in believing they already had the prem ring on their fingers (the Panthers)........well done to the Dragons, great win...and just goes to show there is some "justice" for all......can not wait to see all the blame from some on here; what was it the ref ?, the bunker ?, the wet ball ?........

Hi All
Well I picked the Rabbits last night and the tigers flogged them.
Forget about Inglis he should have been taken off immediately but wouldn't have made any difference. Well done the Tiges you were supreme.
Just heard Dragons have flogged the Panthers.
Amazing how a team slotted in for the spoon beats a team favoured for the crown.
Yes Rocket Coach may be missing for a while.
On Raudonikis well he is a NSW tragic and hates all QLD teams but enjoys living on the Gold Coast....go figga.

Sorry viewers having dinner with a houseful of Dragons and haven't been close to technology til just now.
No excuses from me. Voyeux how bout you go and have another wank in the corner.
Pretty disappointed that our million dollar player was too good to do any time on the field.
As I had thought all along, Cartwright at number 6 was the reason they got so far. Only had a handful of chances today and blew most of them, but that's the pressure of only getting the ball once every three sets. He needs to be number 6. He is dangerous. He showed that last year.
Got smashed in defence. Tamou warming the bench obviously no help to the cause, but missed Mansour and Watene-Zakezniak taking their usual hit-ups off the kick return.
If we were going to lose, I'm not unhappy it was a smashing. Means they need to do something different. If the same 17 run out next week with the same numbers on their back, don't back Penrith.
Don't change what isn't broke.
I'm guessing Hook hasn't heard that one.

Cowboys - How hard was it to write that name. I want the Raiders to get up, and they should have more than enough ability and youth and desire to do so. But game 1 for the Cowboys is at home and that swings it for me. Dare I say it another stinking golden point game for the NQ team.
HOT DAMN, can I call them or can I call them. Do I get two points for calling a draw at the end of 80 minutes Boss?

Well I'll be. Gee, the Dragons did well, grew a bit of mongrel over the off season. Last year their forwards were the best part of the game but didn't gel with the backs. The forwards are doing what they did last year but now with the proper support. Very impressive performance. Hard to make to many predictions after round one but if they play with that mongrel and attitude every week, the Dragons will win more than they lose. I'm taking a screen shot of the ladder after round 1, Dragons will be on top after for and against. Go the Dragons.

Up until now Inglis's problems have always been medial, to the point where he has hardly any left.
When it comes to ACL reconstructions, they will fail if there is not enough stability provided by the other ligaments. The ACL is the thickest and strongest ligament holding femur and lower leg together, but whilst it's healing it becomes the weakest. It needs to be supported by ligaments around that are stronger. If the others are not strong enough, it's over.
Without predicting doomsday, just analysing black and white, this is GI to a tee. This ACL reconstruction doesn't have much hope of success and doctors will be ethically bound to advise it to be a waste of time.
GI has played his last.
Yours truly, Doctor Potato.
Still, a doctor cannot revive himself.

I hope I'm wrong.
Even though the guy sold his soul to Bananaland a dozen years back, he has been one of the greats. He has a huge say in Origin. I'm sure it would have been a more even looking history if he had worn Blue.
He has had his share of off-field drama, but has become a better person for it. Never liked his carry-on in the play the ball to the benefit of his team. I guess I can't like him too much.
Good luck to him, if my medical junk was right. I'm guessing we will all know soon enough.

Greetings football fans,
I've updated the tipping ladder and the NRL ladder following the conclusion of round one.
Our top tipsters this round included two of our oldest contributors (yours truly and the mighty Johnny Ray) and two of our newest contributors in J-Jones and TheMexican.
I'll do my best to have the round two page published on Monday night and will get my tips and previews published on Wednesday.
I'll also get together with my Helper during the course of the week and work out if we can add a few more people who posted tips in the comments for round one.
Thanks for showing your interest. I'll let you know the plan as soon as we have a plan.
All the best

Well not a bad start, at least I made it this time. How good were the Cowboys a? And the broncos played pretty bloody well against the sharks. Coach, the panthers were below ordinary, maybe because all of the hype of them being the premiers, I don't know but they were shit. Well done to the raiders up north in the stinking heat, look out for those boys, they will be in the top 4. I'm really glad the Eels got off to a good start and hopefully keep it going and make the 8. I thought Roosters were ordinary against a depleted Titans side, and good to finally see the Warriors get off to a good start. All the best everyone on round 2. I will be up in Cairns having a well deserved break and probably sweating my ass off. And maybe get hit by a cyclone. Happy days.
Submitted by Coach Potato on
Tailspin, they could be shit for a while.
Both wingers Mansour and Watene-Zelezniak are out with bad knees. If you recall, they were both major keys to last year's attacking style. Also both would hit it up and take pressure off the forwards. The biggest change is moving Cartwright out of five-eighth. Martin needs to step up, or step down.
Sidenote - not sure what Cartwright's infidelity or other personal matters have anything to do with his employer, the ,NRL, or the public. None of the above's business.

Also, I knew it would be a case of weird irony.
Panthers, I'm sure many would agree led the way with their expansive style in 2016. Others teams no doubt took note, and many if not all of them have modelled themselves on this style.
It would show in round 1 that our own style was used against us. Ok maybe that's taking too much credit from the Dragons magical transformation. Let's just say there was at minimum some Panther 2016 influence.
