Round twenty one selections

Penrith Panthers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Pepper Stadium

There are 12 premiership points available in what is left of the regular NRL season and, in my humble opinion, the Bulldogs need all 12 to make the finals this year. While they aren't playing any of the absolute top tier teams in their last six games, four of their matches (including this one) are against teams fighting it out for slots in September. The Bulldogs 2017 campaign is effectively over, and they are too far in front of the Knights to be worried about a wooden spoon. That leaves them stuck in neverland for the next six weeks, with little to play for. Meanwhile the Panthers have won 7 of their last 9 – their only hiccup in recent months was their baffling loss to the Rabbitohs. They don't look like potential premiers, but they remain the most lkely team outside the top 8 to force their way in. These sides met in round 10, when the Bulldogs actually had a reason to try, and the Panthers won 38-0 at ANZ. The NRL can always throw up a surprise result, but if the Bulldogs win this game I will fall off my chair and I doubt I will ever get up again.

Verdict – Panthers by 16

Result – Panthers by 8

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

What I said about the Bulldogs is just as true for the Warriors, although they do have an easier run home. This is their most difficult challenge in what is left of their season, and while they are often a better team at home they'll need to be much better here. The last time they played at home they were bidding farewell to Manu Vatuvai. They couldn't get out of second gear for that game so why would anyone expect them to make an effort here? Cronulla need to keep firing to hold on to a top four spot so expect an effort from them. Note that they are without James Maloney until round 24, but he's been quite the tool in recent weeks. The Sharks will win without him, and be slightly less annoying in the process.

Verdict – Sharks by 10

Result – Sharks by 14

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

May I be the first to congratulate Baggy Gee, because his beloved Eels will be playing finals football in 2017. Given I had them pegged as a top three team at the start of the year it's the least they could do. They have one difficult team to face in what is left of the regular season, but they do have to face them twice. Friday night is the first of those meetings. Only a week ago I was chatting with myself about rugby league (yep...weird) and I was asking myself which players have surprised me this season. The first name I thought of was Clinton Gutherson, who really has come of age in the number one jersey this season. Sadly his season is now over, so I'm going to try not to think about any other footballers in case I'm cursed. While the Eels lose their fullback, the Broncos get theirs back. Darius Boyd polarises football fans like few others do, but I've seen how much he does for the Broncos when he's in the number one jersey. He reads the game, in attack and defence, at a level that few others match, and his return makes a world of difference as the Broncos prepare for yet another finals campaign. There's a few cracking games of football this weekend, and this is definitely one of them.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Eels by 14

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights, like The Thinker last week when he had a long drinky night at Noosa, have fallen down and I don't think they can get back up. At the very least they need two wins from their last six games to avoid the spoon (more accurately, they need two more wins than the Tigers). Given what's left in front of them, I can't see where they can get two wins. The Dragons were fantastic for about 80% of their contest with the Sea Eagles last weekend. That should be good enough here, and they add Dugan and Thompson to their starting thirteen. If the Red V keep winning they make the eight. The winning shouldn't end this Saturday.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Knights by 7

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

The Raiders find themselves on the cusp of the top eight but they really need a team or two above them to start falling over. By the time the Raiders take to the field their two nearest rivals on the ladder (Panthers and Dragons) have probably skipped further in front. Perhaps that will deflate them a little, and perhaps footballers don't even pay attention to such things. I expect Raiders coach Ricky 'shut up and take my money' Stuart will keep the message simple – start winning...and keep winning. They'll need to win without Sia (the forward not the singer) and Jordan (the winger not the country) but what's left of the green meanies looks good enough to prevail here. I announced the Bunnies season as over last week. It still is.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Raiders by 14

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

It seems a little silly to be critical of a team in outright second, but I feel like the Chooks aren't going as well as some people may believe. In their last seven games they have had two convincing wins, but they came at the expense of the 15th placed Tigers and the 16th placed Knights. They got over the 14th placed Bunnies by just two points. Their other wins were during the Origin period against teams managing the Origin period – where they beat the Broncos by 2 and the Storm by 1. They're winning, but they haven't won me over just yet. Their other two games were losses to the Raiders and an absolute flogging by the Sharks. As I said, they haven't won me over. Meanwhile the only two teams to beat the Cowboys since Thurston has been unavailable are the two grand finalists from 2016. Are the Roosters that good? That's for you to decide, but I've a hunch they aren't quite at that level, particularly with Cordnor, Friend and Gordon sitting in the bleachers. The Chooks are the favourites, but it's the Cowboys in a minor upset.

Verdict – Cowboys by 1

Result – Roosters by 6

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

In round 20, when the Sea Eagles had thirteen men on the field they conceded 52 points and scored 4. While they had 12 men on the field they conceded 0 points and scored 18. This is a peculair phenomenon, which shall henceforth be known as 'the curse of Lussick'. Trent Barrett surely has to pull his key men into a small room and ask them, off the record, what is it about the presence of Darcy Lussick on the field that makes you all drop your heads? Instead, Barrett was so discombobulated by what happened that he's dropped the wrong Lussick, with younger brother Joey getting punted this weekend even though he scored a try while his older brother was fuming in the sin bin. Perhaps he hopes Lussick will be sin binned again, during which time the Sea Eagles can score enough points against the Storm to prevail. It's an unusual strategy. A unusual, losing strategy. The Storm to win at home, even without Slater and (possibly) Smith.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm by 34

Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Some may look to the Tigers narrow loss to the Eels last weekend and think they're some chance of an upset victory here. I'm inclined to think the complete opposite. I fear they'll look at last week and think 'you know what, even when we put in and have a dig we still lose'. This is a danger game for the Tigers...for their PR department. They have nothing to play for, and they've got a team of young men with high disposable incomes on the Gold Coast for a weekend. I'd be flying a dozen minders up with them...and locking their hotel rooms until kick-off. Technically the Titans season isn't over yet, and it won't be over this weekend either.

Verdict – Titans by 14

Result – Tigers by 22

Panthers win, but the Dogs gave their all. Could have gone either way.
James Graham has got to stop using his head in tackles.
I believe he still thinks he's back in England where the good old "Liverpool Kiss" is how you win.

a's picture

Yep Panthers won

Baggy_Gee's picture

It was the man in the back who said everyone attack, that is prompting James Grahams flying headbutts. But the girl in the corner.............

Rocket Ryan's picture

Get out the corner baggy we coming to get your BOYds.

tigerholic's picture

Padpul

I have feelings:(

If the Bulldogs keep Des Hasler, something is wrong. They have nothing in attack, their defence was great for the majority of the game last night but the Panthers were not that impressive and still the dogs could only muster 8 points.

Another upset down the gurgler.
Have a great Friday folks

Hello Mr Thinker,
I found a glitch you may need to tidy up in your footy comp. I noticed I was still able to change my tips today. I tried it out. I changed my tips from Canterbury to Penrith after knowing Penrith won, it let me to do so. I logged out and back in again and yes was still able to change my tips. For the record, my tips are back to the original status, I dont cheat.. I'm sure everyone is honest here as well but it's still a glitch methinks. Hope this info helps Mr Thinker. Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Yeah Thinker it's a bit unfair you allow people to change after you tips are finish you need to fix that

Johnny Awesome's picture

Mr Tigerholic its Pabdul not Padpul. I'm sure Mr Pabdul would appreciate that better.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Steel Panther's picture

Baggy you'll be gutted to lose Gutherson for the rest of the season. He's been a real shining light all year for your BOYS!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Not only playing has he been great with the ball, but keeping the team head/morale up during the games as well. Laughed last week as they caught him singing along to "Eye of the Tiger" on field while the game was being played. Show that his head is in the right space and he is enjoying his football.

Rocket Ryan's picture

I wondered how Big Pete was picking those winners........................... and would like a full admission from Tigerholic regarding his winning year.

mark ashford's picture

Hi Baggy
Losing Clint Gutherson is a major loss.
Even before I heard this I was worried about my Broncs down there in enemy territory.
Your big boppers are bigger than our big boppers so will have to rely on our halves and back line for a bit of speed and razzle dazzle.
Roberts to score a couple of late ones when you are tired (I hope)
Luck to you and may the best team win.

On the other game surely the Sharkies to get over the Warriors.
Sorry to the Warriors supporters. Don't know what the answer is.

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete & Tigerholic
Take no notice of Rocket's post. He still hasn't sobered up after QLD flogged the Blues. Come to think of it neither have I.
Heard Laurie will sign on for another year. You do like punishment down there in NSW.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thanks Mark, looking for no ref issues so the teams can determine the result. Best of luck and we'll see who's the best.

BigPeteBx's picture

Steely and Baggy - Gutherson playing extra well this year.
Ex Manly boy, but being creative with a new lease of life.
Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

I'd say "a" with all the drama's that went on in Round 20, that Thinker possibly overlooked the lock and forgot to padbolt (NOT Pabdul) things.
It can happen. I think there is a degree of honesty on this site.
Because Thinker will see a time log in his records of a change and otherwise smell a rat.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Mark A for that support.
I dont cheat either, if that is what Rocket was "hinting".
I finish my work late at times, rush home and check late injuries or non-starters for starters. I have a thesis I can use - sometimes works, but my margins haven't been too bad this year.

Sober up boys or you will both miss the GF this year. I pick what I pick and if any of you browse The Roar site, you will see a bloke there with Bx and where is he sitting. I am off the pace with my work comp, but they play 3 jokers, through the season, for double points all matches. I have only used one, so far.

Also Mark, I for one will keep majority of my postings to footy - not just RL. You know how it is. If you want to make this site better, have a peek at how the mix is done elsewhere. Keeps the flavour of footy alive.
Beware of The C Eagles in Melbourne , as I have gone for a margin of 2 and a possible golden point match. Especially if pot shots aren't taken, during regular time.

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Rocket R - niggle niggle Mr Squiggle!!!
No flies on me mate. Time is of the essence with me, most days.
But appreciate that is what you thought of me, because being kind, I was going to suggest you find the biggest banana you can find and go play with it.

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

mark ashford's picture

Hey Big Pete
How have your temperatures been going out there?
On Bribie we have had 6 early morning going up to 25 during the day.
How do you cope with minus temps?
Do your taps freeze, does any other part of you freeze?
So much for global warming, I've been wearing a tracky to bed.

The Thinker's picture

Johnny Awesome

Thanks for letting me know, and for your honesty. I will investigate and make sure its fixed.

For the record there are time stamps on changes tipsters make, so we will know if anyone makes changes after the result is known.

In any case we will fix so no-one is tempted.

BigPeteBx's picture

Don't know Hardyards (re yours of Wednesday), but they will sure know the flogging feeling - certainly not loving......hummer hummer.
I expected better, but 30 nil at half time, is the writing on the wall.
Reminded me of The Rocky movies, when you cop a barrage of it.
Your Cowboys will certainly need to watch their final games, because all isn't straight sailing. Last game is at home for you - v's Bronco's.
Will be indeed....... interesting.
Enjoy your weekend - getting some nice minus temps here the last week.

BigPeteBx's picture

Mark - we learn to live with minus temps from our youth. I can assure you, it sends shivers down your backbone - hum hum.
Yes taps/pipes freeze and snap. Last Saturday I found two business houses with water running everywhere and phoned them and left messages. You'd think they'd have an after hours number.
Freezer a jolly good fellow mate. Certainly brass monkey weather.
Thanks for asking mate!
Big Pete

Rocket Ryan's picture

Just having a giggle big pete you are tipping well and are currently in a great position keep up the good work.

a's picture

Yeah it could have been that after all the drama went on the Thinker must have forgotten to stop people changing their tips

mark ashford's picture

Rocket has spoken Big Pete. He was always joking there was never any suggestions sorry if I gave the wrong impression.
I take my hat off to the people of western NSW or country Victoria living in those freezing conditions.
I have a simple solution.....you are all invited to sunny Queensland, shortest winter in the world, beautiful beaches, plentiful rainfall, the great barrier reef, huge barramundi just waiting to be caught, best fresh fruit you could ask for, reasonably priced real estate.....etc etc
All you have to do is support the Broncs or the Cows (titans don't count)
You can always go home for a holiday just to remind yourself how good it is in QLD.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Edwards in the bin, Brown OK. Slipped and didn't make contact. Edwards has his usual brain snap and needs to go for five weeks.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy perfect read of the situation. Edwards shot not needed.
Game is perfectly balanced. Looked like a Broncs whitewash early but the Eels have looked the best as the game went on.
Need the Broncs to improve in the second half.
Our speedy guys need to run around your big men. Hope they are a bit tired.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Sorry Mark, avi bent himself into that compromised position. Not a penalty.

BigPeteBx's picture

No probs Rocket - just the way I thought you were trying to get a bite out of me, seeing that poor old Fortress, isn't about.
Thanks Bro, I'll try to keep amongst the leaders. There are good tippers about here, as long as they are prepared to risk it and tip against Thinkers selections.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Take the points, get the kick off and build to more positional play.

BigPeteBx's picture

Aah luv ya Mark......ideal description of QLD - but forgot the babes and meter maids & good beer.........hahahaha.
I had been to Townsville years ago, on two visits. Had some friends out at Kirwan. Have two email buddies at Gold Coast and will try one day to visit them and look you up for a "gathering". Friends of mine here locally go to Burleigh each year for a break.
Manly is my team wherever I go, or migrate to.

Keep well mate - Big Pete

The Thinker's picture

Eels vs Broncos....quality game of football on show here.

Baggy_Gee's picture

You did say yourself boss, game of the round. I'm a very happy little league fan.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
This Parramatta team is a quality side with a quality coach. I agree Mr Thinker great game of footy. Good to see you back BigPete.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Baggy_Gee's picture

Blair should get ten, professional foul same as Crock holding down last week. But Edwards should have been binned earlier, swings and round-about.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Fairdinkum, what a game. go Parra.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
Brisbane are done. What a game. Well done Parramatta.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

The Thinker's picture

Ouch

Baggy_Gee's picture

Indeed, but what a take by Brad.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
Congrats to your team. After the first 15 minutes they outplayed the Broncs in commitment and won the game.
Don't know what your talking about re Blair? many of your guys were holding down and wrestling. What about the shot on the ground, no penalty. I do think you were helped a bit by the penalties.
But saying that the best team won. You wanted it and got it.
Don't think Wayne will be too happy with the boys.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Still on a - +/-. A worry with that logjam ahead of us.

Baggy_Gee's picture

The shoulder charge Mark, but that's why I said swings and round-abouts. It was nice to get a win over a good side who played good football. Even better to play 65 minutes of consistent football.

mark ashford's picture

Yes Baggy your team did you proud tonight.
Next week you will flog the Dogs and then keep the knights looking at the spoon.
A finals spot is coming and I wish you well.

Baggy_Gee's picture

I'll be there round 25 at suncorp. That'll be a great game in a great ground. We need to win by 6 vs the dogs to get that positive differential. But with great completion from the broncos it'll be hard no matter who plays them they'll be there at the pointy end.

a's picture

A good win by the Eels

Baggy_Gee's picture

Maths time, if the dragons win by the landslide people expect, and Manly lose to Melbourne then 26 points for 7th and 8th with the +/- the key figure. But if Manly win the the Storm and Roosters will both be on 32 and we have the same deal as if Manly lose. What a fluid top eight we have this year.

Mary S's picture

A great result for your club Baggy - see you have started the tipping well this week 3/3.
I was watching the grand daughters soccer match tonight, so only caught the last 15 mins of the match - Eels certainly had a strong finish!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thanks Mary, there have been quite a few weeks thought I've burst out the gates fast only to trip over myself and end up on only 3-4. Hope your grand daughter got the win as well.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Awesome J - Eels believed in themselves tonight and knew they could win, when it was 14 all.
Thawed out and back for a read/chat. Had a good think about a comment made last round, about why Manly supporters are allowed on this site and so bugger it - I'm still here.
Next weekend UK Community Shield and then week after EPL starts again. Certainly some monies worth going to be on show.
Cheers JA and keep well/warm down in The Capital.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Mary S - good to see your grand daughter knows a good game.
Big futures with womens soccer/football in USA. Big bucks as well.
I dont know her age group, but do keep her positive with it. You've a good climate up there for Winter and Summer code.

Cheers.
