Round twenty one selections

Penrith Panthers vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Thursday night – Pepper Stadium

There are 12 premiership points available in what is left of the regular NRL season and, in my humble opinion, the Bulldogs need all 12 to make the finals this year. While they aren't playing any of the absolute top tier teams in their last six games, four of their matches (including this one) are against teams fighting it out for slots in September. The Bulldogs 2017 campaign is effectively over, and they are too far in front of the Knights to be worried about a wooden spoon. That leaves them stuck in neverland for the next six weeks, with little to play for. Meanwhile the Panthers have won 7 of their last 9 – their only hiccup in recent months was their baffling loss to the Rabbitohs. They don't look like potential premiers, but they remain the most lkely team outside the top 8 to force their way in. These sides met in round 10, when the Bulldogs actually had a reason to try, and the Panthers won 38-0 at ANZ. The NRL can always throw up a surprise result, but if the Bulldogs win this game I will fall off my chair and I doubt I will ever get up again.

Verdict – Panthers by 16

Result – Panthers by 8

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

What I said about the Bulldogs is just as true for the Warriors, although they do have an easier run home. This is their most difficult challenge in what is left of their season, and while they are often a better team at home they'll need to be much better here. The last time they played at home they were bidding farewell to Manu Vatuvai. They couldn't get out of second gear for that game so why would anyone expect them to make an effort here? Cronulla need to keep firing to hold on to a top four spot so expect an effort from them. Note that they are without James Maloney until round 24, but he's been quite the tool in recent weeks. The Sharks will win without him, and be slightly less annoying in the process.

Verdict – Sharks by 10

Result – Sharks by 14

Parramatta Eels vs Brisbane Broncos – Friday night – ANZ Stadium

May I be the first to congratulate Baggy Gee, because his beloved Eels will be playing finals football in 2017. Given I had them pegged as a top three team at the start of the year it's the least they could do. They have one difficult team to face in what is left of the regular season, but they do have to face them twice. Friday night is the first of those meetings. Only a week ago I was chatting with myself about rugby league (yep...weird) and I was asking myself which players have surprised me this season. The first name I thought of was Clinton Gutherson, who really has come of age in the number one jersey this season. Sadly his season is now over, so I'm going to try not to think about any other footballers in case I'm cursed. While the Eels lose their fullback, the Broncos get theirs back. Darius Boyd polarises football fans like few others do, but I've seen how much he does for the Broncos when he's in the number one jersey. He reads the game, in attack and defence, at a level that few others match, and his return makes a world of difference as the Broncos prepare for yet another finals campaign. There's a few cracking games of football this weekend, and this is definitely one of them.

Verdict – Broncos by 4

Result – Eels by 14

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights, like The Thinker last week when he had a long drinky night at Noosa, have fallen down and I don't think they can get back up. At the very least they need two wins from their last six games to avoid the spoon (more accurately, they need two more wins than the Tigers). Given what's left in front of them, I can't see where they can get two wins. The Dragons were fantastic for about 80% of their contest with the Sea Eagles last weekend. That should be good enough here, and they add Dugan and Thompson to their starting thirteen. If the Red V keep winning they make the eight. The winning shouldn't end this Saturday.

Verdict – Dragons by 16

Result – Knights by 7

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

The Raiders find themselves on the cusp of the top eight but they really need a team or two above them to start falling over. By the time the Raiders take to the field their two nearest rivals on the ladder (Panthers and Dragons) have probably skipped further in front. Perhaps that will deflate them a little, and perhaps footballers don't even pay attention to such things. I expect Raiders coach Ricky 'shut up and take my money' Stuart will keep the message simple – start winning...and keep winning. They'll need to win without Sia (the forward not the singer) and Jordan (the winger not the country) but what's left of the green meanies looks good enough to prevail here. I announced the Bunnies season as over last week. It still is.

Verdict – Raiders by 8

Result – Raiders by 14

Sydney Roosters vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Allianz Stadium

It seems a little silly to be critical of a team in outright second, but I feel like the Chooks aren't going as well as some people may believe. In their last seven games they have had two convincing wins, but they came at the expense of the 15th placed Tigers and the 16th placed Knights. They got over the 14th placed Bunnies by just two points. Their other wins were during the Origin period against teams managing the Origin period – where they beat the Broncos by 2 and the Storm by 1. They're winning, but they haven't won me over just yet. Their other two games were losses to the Raiders and an absolute flogging by the Sharks. As I said, they haven't won me over. Meanwhile the only two teams to beat the Cowboys since Thurston has been unavailable are the two grand finalists from 2016. Are the Roosters that good? That's for you to decide, but I've a hunch they aren't quite at that level, particularly with Cordnor, Friend and Gordon sitting in the bleachers. The Chooks are the favourites, but it's the Cowboys in a minor upset.

Verdict – Cowboys by 1

Result – Roosters by 6

Melbourne Storm vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – AAMI Park

In round 20, when the Sea Eagles had thirteen men on the field they conceded 52 points and scored 4. While they had 12 men on the field they conceded 0 points and scored 18. This is a peculair phenomenon, which shall henceforth be known as 'the curse of Lussick'. Trent Barrett surely has to pull his key men into a small room and ask them, off the record, what is it about the presence of Darcy Lussick on the field that makes you all drop your heads? Instead, Barrett was so discombobulated by what happened that he's dropped the wrong Lussick, with younger brother Joey getting punted this weekend even though he scored a try while his older brother was fuming in the sin bin. Perhaps he hopes Lussick will be sin binned again, during which time the Sea Eagles can score enough points against the Storm to prevail. It's an unusual strategy. A unusual, losing strategy. The Storm to win at home, even without Slater and (possibly) Smith.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm by 34

Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Cbus Super Stadium

Some may look to the Tigers narrow loss to the Eels last weekend and think they're some chance of an upset victory here. I'm inclined to think the complete opposite. I fear they'll look at last week and think 'you know what, even when we put in and have a dig we still lose'. This is a danger game for the Tigers...for their PR department. They have nothing to play for, and they've got a team of young men with high disposable incomes on the Gold Coast for a weekend. I'd be flying a dozen minders up with them...and locking their hotel rooms until kick-off. Technically the Titans season isn't over yet, and it won't be over this weekend either.

Verdict – Titans by 14

Result – Tigers by 22

You are always welcome here sir.

The most impressive thing about the Eels last night was they stayed the course. Broncos kept tryless for the last 70+ minutes of the game, and the longer the game went on the stronger the Eels looked.

Their pack has always been under-rated I feel, and having some big wingers putting their hands up for early carries doesn't hurt either. French isn't big, but he's quick and strong.

At their best they're definitely a top four team...and if they keep playing like they played last night they will be a headache for everyone in September.

christine's picture

Baggy Your team played well last night i will give them credit for that but I do think what Kenny Edwards did was a bit over the top even if he did get away with it so congrats on the win even though I did tip broncos ...

christine's picture

Mark Have you considered doing tourism for Qld I think you should you would be good at it say the next lara bingle perhaps ...

Mary S's picture

Good to hear from you BigPete, I agree with you on soccer being a great game. It is a game I would have enjoyed playing if it have been available to women during my junior years. I played hockey instead!

My grand daughter & grandson both play in 12-14 yr age group and their mum is President (+ team coach) of the soccer in Ingham. Because of their age we will see if the interest is maintained in the future.

Baggy - Olivia did not have a win last night although her team is currently top in her age group. An upset for her - similar to your clubs upset of Broncos I suspect!!!!! I had tipped Broncos to win too!

May we all enjoy more great matches this weekend.
Cheers to all.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hahahaha.....love it Christine.
I think Lara would leave Mark for dead in the beauty and smiles department. I doubt Mark would make an ideal Meter Maid, if he is wearing his footy jumper. However, he might just make the grade, as a narrator in a documentary on "beaches".

Somehow I get a feeling, that Knights and Bunnies might just give more than their sixpence worth this round, after seeing what Eels could do at home last night.
Keep well and enjoy your weekend.

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Mary S - nice to hear back in return.
Hockey and soccer similar in rules etc. except that in hockey (as they say) you carry a weapon.
Wasn't it Ingham where Kerry Boustead hailed from.
Usually find if a player has parents involved in junior sport, they usually carry a few, than more, responsibilities. It is a good age you have there with the two g/children. Many are giving it away at that age, as they have been pushed into it from age 6. This is the age where the skill and techniques come into play. Get a hold of a few of Brazil's World Cup players videos/online links etc. and show the kids it. Amazing what they can pick up on and won't forget. I haven't coached juniors for 8 years now in soccer, but did similar, when I was coaching Western NSW at State Championships and also used motivational stuff, even State of Origin from its inception, to gee my players up. I coached a lot of athletics after, and that doesn't hurt for running styles/speed and correctness.
Keep well - Big Pete

christine's picture

Big pete bx I was going to say the next lara bingle but please not the bikini that wouldn't be a good look . ...

a's picture

Your right that binki would be a bad look

Baggy_Gee's picture

Good call on the Knights Pete, wow, that was a good win.

Mary S's picture

Wow, what an unexpected result with the Knights win. All season you think, it should be this week they win, and it hasn't happened......Now they beat the Dragons who were magnificent in their win last week!!!!
Conrats to GaryChesterUK and Rocket Ryan - the only ones to pick the Knights.
Never say never...........

EagleROCKS's picture

Good day folks, regarding last nights match the Brocos were well below par, while the Eels were good, for mine they still lack what the top sides have and the game itself wasnt really as good as all are saying but thats my humble opinion.
G'day Big Pete good to see some of us Manly boys still have a voice on here, its the greatest thing in the world being an Eagles suporter mate, winning becomes all that much better.
Looking forward to our big clash tommoz against our great rivals the Storm, the match of the round by FAR and the Mighty Sea Eagles to shock them and everyone else, and march back to the top 4.
so lets all ROCK ON with the MIGHTY SEA EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!

IM JUST CRAZY BOUT THE WAY YOU MOVE DOIN THE EAGLE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mark ashford's picture

Ha Ha Christine you a funny lady. If I became a tourism ambassador for Qld the state would be deserted except for Broncos & Cowboys fans.
See myself in a monokini terrifying young children and grandparents.
Didn't tip them but happy to see a Knights win.
They have bought well for next year and may well be in contention.
Eels showed the Broncs last night what commitment means.
After two early easy tries the Broncs clocked off but the Eels didn't give up.
Broncs need to step up a cog or two if they are serious.

a's picture

Yes Im happy to see Knights win too

christine's picture

Mark & "a" your both right knights have bought well for next year & i'm still waiting for some confirmation on weather or not they are also going to be signing tau tau mogaas well I read that in tweets two weeks ago the announcement was supposed to come be last week but as yet nothing that i'm aware of, does anyone know if this is true ?

christine's picture

that was meant to read tau tau moga as well ?

christine's picture

Yes knights have brought well they will be a force next year well I won't be writing them off put it that way are we talking premiership material to soon to say yet but they be giving other clubs a challenge I think ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

But Mark you in a monokini would really cement us as the fun loving larrikin state of Australia. But in all honesty who thought that the Knights Dragons game was going to be anything but a massacre. Great for the Knights and they still are a scary side for everyone who underestimates them.

Rocket Ryan's picture

You said it eagles broncos well below par eels very good no mistakes but where were the broncos halfs our only trick inside ball to jimmy not good enough.

Rocket Ryan's picture

Big pete you haven't bscked the rabbits or knights.

BigPeteBx's picture

No Rocket I didn't tip them.
It was a feeling I had this morning, well after my tips were placed.
Lets call it a Fortress upset.
Rabbits often start well and failed. Either way I didn't tip Eels or Knights in our comp. Anything is good, to give Dragons what they gave us last week. What goes round comes round.
Keep well Old Son - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Evenin E-Rocks - hows it going mate.
We are few and far between here, on The Thinker site. But I'm not the spruiking type. Just go along merrily on my way. Cheerios to the mighty Brooky Fortress if u r speaking with him.
He never took the option up to contact Thinker and ask for my contact details, thus I couldn't really mentor him away from the site. Things across the ditch, are much different here on mainland Oz.
We'll leave it there. Take it Steady Eddy, keep well and the plumage looking good for finals. We'll be there - no fear or contradiction on that.
These kicks in the pants will make us better for what has happened.
Catch ya - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Baggy - I didnt pick Knights.
It was a feeling and warm feeling I had. Better than a frosty morn here.
Lets call it an upset.
Keep well - Big Pete

Baggy_Gee's picture

I know you didn't Pete, but you did call the likelihood of the boil over. That in itself is a win for thinking and gut logic.

The Thinker's picture

A thank you from me this round. It's great to see all the on-topic comments in round 21.

And I'm sure I'm not the only one that appreciates it.

I'm looking forward to Storm vs Sea Eagles...I'm not as confident as Eagle Rocks, but Manly do tend to lift for this game. They did leak 50 points to the Dragons last week though, and the Dragons just got beaten by the Knights. It's a worrying form line.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
Yep Mr Thinker, Manly tend to fire against the Storm. I think the rivalry was cemented with the final game at Brookvale in 2011 against Melbourne. There was that famous fight between Glen Stewart and Adam Blair. Manly won that game 18–4. I remember it well, both were sent off and started fighting again near the side line. That fight and the melee leading to it goes down as the battle of Brookvale. How they call Brooky, Lottoland now is beyond me? Surely they could have kept the Brookvale name somewhere in the equation? Anyway, ever since that game, there has been that fairdinkum tough rivalry between the two clubs. I must admit, I personally didnt mind a bit of biff in those days, now its handbags and courtesies with the lads. All good though, the footy will be as tough as ever. Mr Thinker, Saints had a ripper last week and sadly loaded the wrong truck this week. Manly had a shocker last week, theyll be as friendly as a footy field full of bindies this week. It will be an interesting game. Cheers from Mr Awesome

a's picture

Yeah it's good to see everyone on topic

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes "a" on topic of footy.

@All at Thinker -
Manly flogged again......looks like they're getting their points for and against sorted out, in the wrong manner. 92 pts in two weeks.
I admit defeat, before you guys throw it at us early and to think better was coming this week.
Keep well - Pete

Steel Panther's picture

Yea it was a tough lesson for your team Big Pete but Storm would have flogged anyone today playing how they did. They are clinical and in my opinion the best team in the comp right now. Manly clinging on to the eight. Dragons also looking vunerable with Penrith knocking on the door...

EagleROCKS's picture

Well done to the Storm too good for us today, I hate to mention the refs, when u get beaten by that scoreline. But in the first half the Storm got the rub of the green with many penalaties, when we seemed to be gettimng back intio the game. One Storm try was not a try, but they just gave it anyway.
Big game for us at Brookie next week come on the boys, we have had a great year beyond peoples hate and critics, but we will be in the finals. The roosters could be the game to get us back on track.
You stick with your club through thick and thin and us Manly boys know how to do that.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks.

THE EAGLES WILL ROCK ON BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baggy_Gee's picture

Pete sometime a team needs a kicking to sharpen up their structure and mental approach. But 2 in 2, isn't good. Let's hope they can step it up next weekend and stay in the eight.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Penalty count was 7 all according to the ABC commentators. Just some days you run into a red hot team.

mark ashford's picture

Roosters and Storm must surely be favourites for the GF this year.
Manly, Broncos and Cowboys slipping away.
Tigers are well above the Titans in attack so far. I know it's only 4 nil but the Tiges attack and defense is far superior.
Where is the legendary, try scoring machine, Jarrod Hayne?
Is he back behind the posts reading his press?
C'mon Jarrod do something electric, it's only the Tigers.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Tim lolaheia is going great guns since he came across the ditch, good kicking and looks good in attack.

mark ashford's picture

Don't normally tip the Titans and probably never will again.
Don't know how much they are paying Hayne but would ask for my money back. I know he scored their only try but it was a gift.
Tigers attack was non stop, Tedesco a star. Say goodbye to any finals hopes Titan supporters.

christine's picture

I wouldn't have awarded the hayne try I personally thought it was short of the line & he made too many errors , he's a cat ...

christine's picture

Mark If you remember earlier this season I did say I think we are looking at a storm / roosters grand final well there are still a couple of teams that could upset that possibility sharks , broncos , manly sharks aren't playing the way they were this time last season broncos have lost mc culloch , & manly have just lost two games in a row & need to turn things around if they are going to be any threat & given the level storm are already playing at & the fact they beat manly 40-6 today need I really say any more ...

christine's picture

Before any one says it no i'm not picking on manly ok ...

The Thinker's picture

Baggy,

I know your points differential is an issue, but you are a massive chance of top four from here.

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,

I've updated the NRL ladder and the tipping comp. Congrats to Rockey Ryan who topped the tipping in round 21 with 6 from 8. Scott M rejoins some nub-nub called The Thinker at the top, with a large pack of contenders in pursuit of a podium finish and some sort of prize happiness.

I'll have the round 22 page published as soon as I can and I will have my previews and tips published on Wednesday.

All the best

Baggy_Gee's picture

Even I'm starting to get excited about the possibility. Just trying to contain myself until it happens. What a way it would be to break a 9 year drought from finals football than to make the double chance bracket.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hi all,
As clinical and deadly as Melbourne is, there is one team which seems to to take them to their limits and that team is ...................................................................................................................................................Cronulla. Yep, Melbourne is like the Brisbane of old but they are beatable. The trick is finding the right game plan. in recent times, the closest games have been against Cronulla. i still reckon its a two horse race bewteen these two great sides.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Johnny Awesome's picture

Mr Thinler have you sorted the after close off period team changes bit. I logged on and it was still there?

tigerholic's picture

Afternoon Folks
I was fortunate enough to be at the Tigers - Titans match yesterday and as it turned out it was a great day to be a Tiger's Fan.

I have to thank the generosity of Ash Taylor who arranged free tickets for myself and my wife and kids, 6 tickets in all were left at the gate, thank-you to Ash Taylor's brother whom I won't name as I work with him. Thanks heaps it was a great day.

I have to talk about the average family turning up every week or at least to every home game that their team plays.

If I was living in Sydney and love the footy as I do, I would almost need a second job to cover the cost of attending your teams matches for a year. We had to cough up for one ticket which was only $22, we took a further $200 with us and all that was in my pocket this morning was a few gold coins.

My missus took the 4 kids down stairs to get the first round of food(we took in water) and she came back and said that was $80, she also said that one of the kids wanted fairy floss, this on the way out cost another $20. I had 6 beers during the match and this cost me close to $60, include ice creams for the other kids and the $200 was gone.

I love my footy and I must admit that this was my first game this year that I have been to and yes it was on free tickets, if you throw in the cost of tickets you probably need close to $350 for the day if you add in the long neck on the trip home from the train station.

Does anyone have an opinion on the cost of attending NRL matches, I have an out of towners membership with the Tigers that use to include entry to an away game but doesn't anymore.

How does QLD compare to NSW matches.

Cheers

tigerholic's picture

Mr Thinker
Rocket Ryan seems to be screaming up the table faster than the Wests Tigers team.

My question is, who has he started to follow for his tips, all of a sudden he can't miss a beat, something has changed or he has he been on some really good medication.
Last year it was him and the one whom we can't talk about battling it out for the spoon, now he is coming down the inside rail with 200 to go.

Have a great week.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hello all,
Mr Tigerholic, you are right that it's costly going to the footy plus fighting the traffic to get there and back home. In my case, I pay for two seats for all the Raiders home games. That costs me $500 a year. I have a payment plan of $50 a month with the Raiders over 10 months, no interest incurred with the plan. So two of us get 12 home games each, usually my daughter goes with me. I always take my esky with food, snacks and drinks but still get my daughter a treat. In your case with a whole family, I can see how hard it would be cost wise. Clubs really need to re-assess family ticket prices at least. The cost of food may not be able to be changed much because most of the vendors are private and need to pay wages and fees to be there etc. Cheers from Mr Awesome

Baggy_Gee's picture

We'll things never change Tiger, I've been fighting a rear guard action for the last few only beating those who stopped tipping. But I think it is dependent on who you follow, I get the out of town eels membership and that gets me into Suncorp to watch the BOYS and 2 local games, which being at ANZ I refuse to attend. Waiting for the new stadium to be finish so I can go Home proper.

Baggy_Gee's picture

If the clubs who own their own grounds, brought the prices down it would force a similar change across the entire country. Why pay $20 for a pie and drink at ANZ when you only pay $10 at Belmore? It would start sending clubs back to packed home grounds instead of empty super stadiums and the clubs would reap the financial benefits of full houses.

Rocket Ryan's picture

This would be the worse couple of years I have ever endured tipping wise, but you can relax Tigerholic its not as if baggy will pass us although he is not far away, Tigerholic feel free to follow me this week and jump on Rockets Roughie when I announce it,you need to get on it as well Big Pete.

The Thinker's picture

Tigerholic

There is very little effort made to entice NRL fans to the NRL games.

Compare that to the AFL. A pie at the MCG costs $4.30 - the price has gone up just 30 cents in ten years.

When you think about how hard it is to get to and from games in Sydney...and how much it costs when you are there.....I can completely understand why people don't go.

Food and drink at Suncorp isn't cheap (a pie is $5.10), but its cheaper than Sydney, and it's an awful lot easier for most people to get to and from the venue.

Hardyards's picture

Hi footy fans,
Well, I’m guessing Manly lent the Cowboys a plumber while we were down south because we sure did leak points in the second half. Good win to the chooks, at least we can take away the fact that we can match the top sides in the first half at least. Greeny has some work to do this week, with the storm in the form their in, we need to defend ALL game. Nice of the Broncs to wait for us on the ladder too! :) C’mon home crowd advantage.
