* note: team line-ups are subject to considerable change, but will be updated as news filters through.

Much has been made of the changes affecting the Queensland Origin team. I don't dismiss these changes lightly – when you take away Thurston, Inglis and Scott it's hard to plug the hole their absence leaves behind. The big blue elephant in the room that no-one is talking about is the changes in the NSW side, so let's have a look at this elephant now, Since the last Origin game at Suncorp Stadium in 2016 the Blues have made the following changes:

  • A different fullback
  • Two different centres (arguably playing out of position)
  • One different winger (they've replaced a Morris brother with the other Morris brother – you're forgiven if you didn't notice)
  • A different halfback
  • A new first-time captain
  • Two different prop forwards
  • Two brand new faces on the bench

That's a heck of a lot of changes, particularly when the QLD side have made just three. Even the four guys on the bench for QLD have been there before, so for my money the QLD side are actually a more settled squad than the Blues. QLD Captain Cameron Smith, two-parts footballer and two-parts metronome, is an old hand at all of this. Anything thrown at him in the lead-up will be fended off with ease. It's likely that anything thrown at him on the field will be dealt with in much the same way. I'm a card-carrying member of the Boyd Cordnor fan club, and I've been telling the Blues to find a new captain for about seven years, but this is his debut at the toss of the coin. It's a big deal, and he's in enemy territory. I don't want the man to crumble, and I don't think he will, but it's a big deal.

I've been banking on (literally banking on) low scoring totals in the first game of every Origin series since forever. Since 2011 the highest combined total is 28 points and the highest total by any team is 18 points. In the last three years the totals are actually shrinking further. In 2014 the Blues won 12-8, in 2015 the Maroons won 11-10 and in 2016 the Maroons won 6-4. This trend can't go on forever, but it doesn't look like breaking anytime soon. Take note though, that this game is at Suncorp which is a better surface for football at this time of year. That 28 point game I mentioned earlier was at Suncorp back in 2011. The three lowest scoring games were all at ANZ. The venue matters, if you're banking on these things (bankle responsibly).

There's talk that NSW will aim Tyson Frizell (and others) at Anthony Milford and why wouldn't they? That said, he knows it's coming and QLD knows its coming. QLD will have a plan to manage that just as they have with their small playmakers in the past. Milford gets targeted in defence when he plays for the Broncos and they seem to be travelling just fine. The word is that Will Chambers will be defending alongside Milford in the line but we shall see on the night. There's no shortage of Bronco backrowers in this QLD line-up that can help out if need be.

As far as a result goes I'm tipping a low-scoring contest but not quite as low-scoring as recent years, and I'm banking on the composure of Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Darius Boyd (whose growth as a player in recent years is truly astounding) to get the home side home. Enjoy the game football fans. Enjoy the game.

Verdict – QLD 13 to defeat NSW 12

First try scorer – Dane Gagai

Man of the Match – Cooper Cronk

Hi all,
I'm awake quite early this morning. Went to the footy yesterday arvo with my daughter to watch the Raiders play. Yep, it was a scratchy win but a win nonetheless. My daughter loved it, it was unreal to see her excitement. When we got home, I mentioned an early night for school and already she started pretending illness, not to attend school today. I’ve had a scratchy sleep bit like how the Raiders played, thinking about my daughters bullying, that’s why I’m up, can’t sleep. Christine, you’ve been brave enough to put into words, what I’ve been thinking about for a while and yep I’ve said nothing either. I’m sure the lads were trying to have a joke, but when the person receiving the jokes is not laughing it stops being one. I found out that my daughter felt sorry for a girl who looked alone and was being laughed at, so she made friends with her. My daughters bullying, has been on and off for some time now, she is different to other girls her age [that’s all I will say on that]. So what these group of girls have been doing is bullying my daughter then becoming her friend, then bullied her again and became her friend again, it's a game to them, I didn’t know the extent this has been going on until recently, my daughter keeps forgiving them and accepting them, and that’s where it hurts me. She always forgave them, each and every time, she doesn’t count or hold any bad feelings to anyone, fair dinkum this is getting hard. The so called leader of this group of these young girls told my daughter she couldn’t hang around them because she made friends with this lonely girl now. Obviously, my daughter ignored her and then she started receiving more bullying. Can’t sleep, taken the day off work to help my daughter out, so I’ve had plenty of time to go through the posts now, and that hasn’t helped me either, actually quite sad. I can see your point Christine and it’s not funny watching someone being put down. There is nothing good in this. I’ve checked previous posts and can’t see one post where the Mr Spartan was rude, his posts are different, but he has always been respectful. I think Mary s was referring to Mr Spartan being rude and not you Christine, but gee she’s mistaken there as well, Mr Spartan posts are respectful. Hey guys, you can all be funny enough without having to be funny by putting another down. I’m sure the guys have been joking but how about we just lighten up some now. I’ve got enough bullying to contend with in my real life and that hurts especially when it’s someone you love, their pain is yours pain, without reading it here as well. Let’s not plant bad seeds here on Mr Thinkers site and lets not make the jokes about anyone.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Yep, Mr Thinker, State of Origin is back you can't help but love it. Gee, I love the look of the NSW side. The Qld side? Well what can I say? They always looks awesome. I just have a feeling that NSW have a chance this year, it’s a very small feeling but it's there. I actually think it would be good for league in general to have a NSW win. I can never see NSW dominating Qld like they do to us, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the old rivalry of yester year when a series win could go either way. Can't help but respect Cameron Smith, what a role model, he has never boasted the dominance of Qld, terrific leader.
Cheers from Mr Awesome

Ha Mr Rocket Ryan whats the go with your stutter mate. Good come back though, for each game.

Mary s I accept your apology no harm done ok & johnny awesome thankyou for seeing my point about Spartan warrior when I say do we really want to be no better than coach by berating everything Spartan warrior says & isn't Spartan warrior just as entitled to be on this site than anyone else like it or not it's the thinkers website & the thinker has the say who stays & who goes I don't know why we can't all just get along lets not be racist of anyone lets just be excepting & johnny awesome those girls that pretend to friends with your daughter really aren't her friends at all they will lead your daughter to stray & no good trust me I know , the girl by herself that is her friend & they will bond such a friendship if they stick tougther that will last a life time & that's what your daughter really needs because you can't & won't always be there for her even if you want to there will be times you just can't you really have to help those two girls stick toughter ok

christine's picture

It's qld for me I don't take nsw even though I live in nsw I only take a winning team ...

christine's picture

Johnny awesome it was never Spartan warrior that's been rude to anyone the only person that has was coach & he is gone end of story ...

Johnny Awesome's picture

Hello all,
Thankyou Christine for your kind words, they are very much appreciated. You definitely have a grasp on things, yep you make a lot of sense. I had a meeting this morning with the Principle and Deputy. Step 1 complete, we will take one day at a time.
Ok Christine, you said you will take the winning team in State of Origin? What will happen if NSW beat QLD this year? Will change to NSW? Cheers from Mr Awesome.

a's picture

Yeah no one is rude escape that one person and I won't mention his name he's now gone here now we're all friends and you right Spartan may be different but he seems like a decent person sonI think we should give him a chance Spartan please stay on the site we need someone like you

Christine 's picture

Thanks for your support with the situation with Spartan "a" & Johnny awesome I will never pledge allegiance to Nsw when it comes to origin I only take a winning team but it doesn't hurt to lose one now & then if we do that is...

Go The BLUES

Rocket Ryan's picture

Tigerholic everybody feels sorry for you we will have all chip in and see if thinker or christine can send you a qld beanie clearly you have suffered enough this last decade that last little go the blues was piss poor.

Baggy_Gee's picture

State of origins here, yay. At least we know Ryan has the patience of a typical QLD supporter, keep hitting it till it works. The media up here is silent for a change, might be that they sense a beating coming and don't want to give others ammo for after the record breaking winning margin by NSW. Now for the BOYS to cement a top eight spot before Norman gets back life will be peachy.

Baggy_Gee's picture

And with Moses as an Eel, tigerholic can live the success vicariously.

Christine
I've reread Mary S's comments and think you may have misread them.
Mary S referred to comments made against you and "a" not by you.
Spartan you are a little different mate.
You appeared about the same time Coach left us.
Coach caused considerable angst on the site.
Some, perhaps unkindly, thought you were Coach in Spartan clothing.
You say Thinker invited you on the site, well Thinker also invited Coach on the site.
As a Rugby League tipping site your posts are interesting, historical, educational but have nothing to do with the game.
Thinker is a rusted on RL fan, did he not suggest you offer a tip or two occasionally? you know between the history lessons.

Fortress and Baggy Gee
It's just 48 hours to SOO 1
Time to kiss and make up. (at least for the origin period)
Now that Gallen, Beau Scott and Ennis are gone I'm finding it hard to "hate" the Blues.
QLD without Inglis, Matt Scott, Corey Parker and Thurston must surely be beatable, even at Suncorp.
I think QLD should have picked Slater at fullback and Boyd on a wing or somewhere. Slater has regained his electric returns and is always in the play and talking heaps.
Wednesday will decide it. Good luck to the Blues.
BUT QLD to win by 12 points

mark ashford's picture

Sorry folks
I foolishly posted the above 2 on the round 12 page so cut and posted as they may be worth a read.

Baggy_Gee's picture

QED should have picked Boyd and then put him on the bus to game 2 early. I have never seen the hype lived up to surrounding him and he would definitely get a start in my last pick team. It's the attitude, I hire on attitude as you can teach skills, and with professional athletes it's more about polishing the skills than teaching them. But attitude can only change if the player is willing to do it himself, he can fake it for a while but the true colours always come through.

Fortress's picture

Late post folks I will make it quick.

This should be a ripper,I'm a blues man so I'm sticking with the blues,if jt was playing it would be a lot harder as for mine he has been the main difference in qld's dominance in the last decade, without him its going to be very close, for most most mine who ever wins the forwards battle wins this game as both halves combo's cancel each other out.

My final word I will stick with the blues though its at suncorp, the blues must go hard the full 80mts,any letting up then it will be the old story!!!!!!!!!!!!

Verdict:...the blues by 7

Enjoy the game everyone ,scream the house down, and go the blues !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortress's picture

Meant to say "for mine(my opinion) who ever !!!!!!!!;

Just for the spelling police!!!!!!

Goodluck everyone bring it on from the fortress !!!!!!!

Saw Cameron Smith being interviewed last night re State of Origin and the players pay dispute with the commentator’s suggestion of the players going on strike. Have just read the article on Thinker’s site by Foxtel on the issue (NRL must take pay dispute seriously…). How will this affect the SoO series do you think?
Go QLD – to win by 2 points in a close game.
Cheers to all and enjoy the match.

Johnny Awesome's picture

Good morning all,
This is not the first time something like this happenend Mary S.
The players won't hurt State of Oridin, it means too much, but they are trying to get their point across. Time to get start moving to work shortly.
I'm hoping the Blues win, starting with game 1. And even the most ardent QLD supporter would have to admit, The Blues are not only playing them, but we’ve also got to contend with a little bit of refereeing as well, as we’ve done since it began.
Remember Gomersall when he referreed State of Origin between 1982 and 1988. As a ref, he was welcome as a wet shoe for NSW.
I was reading an article on the NRL site that referred to Cameron Smith as the ref whisperer. Yep, Cameron Smith is good, check out the stats Fox has found:
OLD have been favoured 52 matches to just 7 for NSW when playing in QLD.
When Cameron Smith has been captain, QLD have two thirds of the penalty count and he has never lost a penalty count as captain for the Maroons. So there you go, interesting stats. Can't wait for the footy to start. Time for a brew and then another day at work.
Cheers from Mr Awesome.

Mark all is good between mary s & me she had already explained & I had already excepted her apology & told her no harm done but on the Spartan note do we really want to be no better than coach mark we don't only talk about nrl on this site as you know & no one has the right to say who can be on here & who can't except the thinker so if spartan wants to be on here weather he talks nrl or not it's not up to me or you or anyone else on this site only the thinker we are not coach & we should aim to never be like coach just because someone dares to be different does that mean we can evict them ?

Yeah no one needs to be like Coach

Spartan Warrior's picture

Greetings from the Spartan Warrior,

The Spartan Warrior will speak for one last time,

I thank thee all in advance for listening to me. I must however clarify a misconception; Master Thinker did not personally invite me here. As my previous comment said, he knows of my identity. I contacted Master Thinker at the start and being the gentleman he is, he allowed me to participate on his site.

Master Mark Ashford and Lady Christine, I sincerely thank you for your kindness. You both show much wisdom. Lady Christine you say, I need not go, I can be myself and suggested I take part in the tips to join you all. Wise words indeed Lady Christine, you are kind and given time that would have ensued. Master Mark Ashford, your words are also words of wisdom and yea, I will learn from thee. Those history lessons you speak of, did include rugby league. I spoke of women, I spoke of the game in the country and I also spoke of the children growing up in rugby league. My communication was aged, yea I agree, but the message was true. Rugby league is my passion. I had hoped to gradually show more, participate, but other events here have curtailed that. I thank thee Master Mark Ashford, good advice indeed. I am still learning.

Lady Christine and Master 'a', I will use a modern word to describe you both....it is simply wow. You are both inspiring people, your kind words reflect kind souls. Your words Lady Christine brought real tears to my eyes, you are both so genuine. Thank you both for teaching me more about life, this is true. I have followed this site for some time and thought I could share positivity here. The Spartan Warrior is a symbol of power and strength, not overtly, but inside each one of us. Sparta was a small entity that stood up against tyranny; its women were treated as equals. I had hoped to convey this message with rugby league in general, but it was not to be. Sadly, I arrived at an inopportune time; I was also mistaken for another. Master Thinker knows my identity and knows I am not he that was here before.

I will be absolutely honest, the words used against me unintentionally, actually hurt. I remained quiet but finally could not remain so. I was saddened that my presence could inflame so much angst. I have faced many battles in my life, I face many now and I will face many more. The battle here was even too great for me, I did not believe it would hurt as much as it did, I surprised even myself how it affected me. My intentions were honourable, though I can see I was misdirected. What has worked in the past needs to be modernised to work today. There is a place for history; rugby league is all about history.

I truly take full responsibility for any upset that has occurred; no-one else is to blame. Ye, for that, I am sorry. My time here has come to a close. I wish to sincerely thank Master 'a', Master Mark Ashford, Lady Christine, Master Baggy Gee, Lady MaryS the ever passionate Master Fortress, Master Biggest Peter, Master Pabdul. I thank thee all for your understanding. Master Pabdul, I apologise for any misunderstanding with your spoken words, I too have erred many times in my lifetime and will again, and that is life. I believe amongst all this we have all learnt something, I certainly have. Please enjoy your banter, your jokes, enjoy your rugby league, your sport in general, but most of all, look out for one another, be a family. I'll still be watching from afar. It is time for me to go home. There are many good hearts here, starting with the creator of this site, Master Thinker. Maybe, Master Thinker may invite me back as a wiser more modern warrior one day. Master Thinker, I thank thee also for your understanding.

I bid you all goodbye. Take care to thee all.

Ego enim non est ultimum tempus

[I will have spoken for the last time. The Spartan Warrior]

Mary S's picture

All the very best to you Spartan Warrior whatever your decision as it is yours to make.
The old fashioned English takes a bit of getting used to ( reminds me of the days I had to study Shakespeare in High School) but it grows on you with time and patience. That is a commodity (patience that is) that is lacking in this day and age and you see, and hear on the news, of so many incidences where people react without thought. I think it is referred to as 'progress'
Cheers
Mary S

a's picture

Yeah thanks Spartan it's up to you whenever you want to stay here or not but I would like you to continue but it's up to you

christine's picture

Spartan I for one thank you for showing us a different side to life considering everything going on in this world right now & I for one am not ashamed to say you being on the site is like a breath of fresh air blowing in to clear out the cobwebs when things get a bit stale & I would appreciate it if you would stay on site but that decision is up to you , I know what it's like having someone against you all the time which I did put up with but I don't want to mention his name on here I feel he's had to much air time already I won't give him anymore air time so again Spartan warrior I would like you to reconsider not leaving the site but the decision is yours in the end & if you do decide to then good luck with whatever you do but it brings me much sadness to think they have chased another person off this site & I am not proud of the family for doing it ...

christine's picture

Mary s your right it is referred to as progress there are two things I won't & can't adjust to progress & technology I live in Sydney & our whole skyline now is wall to wall blocks of flats & apartments it is rather depressing it's a concrete jungle but if you don't adjust to it then it suffocates you ...

Rocket Ryan's picture

I dare say old spartan smokes a bit

christine's picture

rocket I think you might do to but seriously where has this aggression between fortress & baggy gee come from I mean fortress is just going at him like a pitbull all fired up which is what my father says about me when anyone pisses me off i'm relentless but baggy gee is only defending himself & now Spartan so we are starting to see a pattern here I think & I for one am not suggesting any solution so don't think I am ...

a's picture

Yeah Spartan I will miss you. It good you have shown us peace considering Donald Trump is going to start WW3 and the bombing at the Ariania Grande Concert you are a breath of Fresh Air I'm going to miss you Spartan

Spartan Warrior
From what I've read of the Spartans they were a fierce warrior group who rarely lost a fight and never gave up.
Seems you're tossing in the towel too easily.
Stick around and enjoy the fun.

Fortress's picture

Christine I spoke fact he always seems to bag out the top clubs for example mighty eagkes ,the broncos but look at the rabble and inept club he supports he never thinks they have been a failure over the last 3 decades Christine its all an act he and coach are actors ,its the real people on hear like me and you ,big Pete, mark A,"a",rocket,Mary s,padbul,Mary s,johnny awsome we are all real no fake I can feel it ,but with baggy pants and coach I can't its all an act just read baggy pants posts he will put me and my club. Down then I will defend myself and my club just like I did with coach isn't that strange its the same thing both made out I was in the wrong to suck up to the rest and have everyone go against me coach tryed to did but did not succeed and baggy is no different, its OK chrisrine I know you like baggy but read his posts from the past then u will see its me who is defending myself not the other way around this is the same mistake u made with me and coach but then u woke up to him and found out the truth about him,in time everyone will know what a suck up baggy pants really is people who are fake and pretend to be what they are not will always get found out look at what happened to spud head ,I'm copping the same from baggy pants only that I'm smarter, wiser, more passionate than he will ever be and one last thing my club has been one of the greats in the modern era his club javnt won a comp in 3 decades I mean come on the facts are facts .

Thanks Christine keep strong u are real not fake that's the way to be!!!!!!!!

christine's picture

Fortress I'm not against you so don't think I am it was sarcasm you no tounge in cheek but I was aware of coach being coach way before you think I was because I had been on the receiveing end of it before you came on site & I knew I had to find a common ground to get you talking which was you are both passionate about your clubs & footy & that's what got you talking otherwise coach would have made it hard for you from the start & what i'm saying about baggy gee is he has been on this site for a long time almost as long as me & mark , "a", newbie , steel panther, johnny ray guru craig & yeah we are all people so why can't we just be civil & get along as the thinker has said before if someone says something you don't like don't react just say nothing & before you say it the reason I reacted to what mary s said was the way it was worded so at the time i felt justified in doing so but I don't jump down mary s 's throat every time she says something in my direction & I did accept mary s 's apology so fortress as much as it pains you just try to be a bit more accepting of baggy gee please for me fortress so we all can be a bit more civil to each other ...

christine's picture

Fortress one thing you do have in common with baggy gee is you are both passionate about your clubs , your teams & your footy try & work on that basis & see how you go you might actually find a common ground ...

christine's picture

Fortress my point is you don't have to like baggy gee's team & he doesn't have to like yours but it's the passion you both have for your teams that is the common ground & we have already lost enough people of this site we don't want to lose even more so if Spartan stays on site which he has a right to do if he chooses to & in case you haven't noticed there was someone else that only posted a couple of times that used the name of handy & handy has since then disappeared he could have been coach so you have no proof Spartan is coach but I can assure you Spartan isn't coach from his articulate vocabulary , grammer & education all coach knew was stats because he can count & dribble but lets not give him anymore air time , if Spartan chooses to stay on site that is up to Spartan & no one not me , you , or anyone else has the right to say someone can't so please fortress just be excepting ...

a's picture

This site has really turned into a soap opera this is why we need Spartan because he wants peace dont forget we on the Thinkers site not some silly sort of soap opera like Home and Away

a's picture

Just enjoy the site if this keeps up the Thinker might have to put someone in the bin

Steel Panther's picture

Spartan Warrior are you at all related to New Zealand Warrior or the late Auckland Warrior?

christine's picture

"a" that's my point if we aren't excepting we are no better than he who shall remain name less & we are probably only annoy the powers that be ( the thinker ) so we all have to be excepting & if you don't like it then maybe you are the one that has to leave not the other people just because you won't except them ok just food for thought I thought I would put out there so think about it before we do get sin binned ...

christine's picture

We really don't want to get sin binned before origin it would mean if we annoy the thinker bad enough not being able to post comments for a few days & I for one don't want that ...

mark ashford's picture

OK folks how about a bit of footy talk...enough of the other.
Johnny Awesome you remember Barry Gomersall a QLD based ref.
Well I remember Hollywood Harrigan and others all NSW based who did the Maroons no favours.
NSW came to bash and the Maroons came to play, no wonder the penalty count was in favour of the QLDers.
Origin is a test of the best players in Aus.
If one team comes to fight and the other comes to play.
Then the players will win.
With no Gallen you may just be a chance.
Give Klemmer a valium before the match.
And ask James Maloney to stop the head highs...then who knows you may just win.
For mine QLD by 6 (revised from previous)

Taka's picture

Hi,

Game 1 is always a must win game to build confidence. It's a away from home for blues & it's gonna be a tough one for them. But still I'm gonna tip the blues to win this one because all the 17 players are playing good footy for their respective clubs.

The maroons with the loss of JT,GI, Slater, Matt Scott & retiree Parker I'll just have to watch & see how the new guys will play.

I'm tipping Blues to win by 8.
First try Brett Morris.

Enjoy watching the game.

Thank you. :-)

mark ashford's picture

Good call Taka
The Maroons are well down on usual troops will be interesting to see how the new boys go.
Will it be a new dynasty or is it the Blues time to excel.
Either way will be a cracker of a game.
I'd still prefer to see origin played at seasons end to give all clubs a shot at the title.
