Round eighteen selections

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Panthers Stadium

The Panthers have the luxury of not having to name their Origin halves in the line-up after unleashing a new pairing in round 17. That said, team changes are pretty likely. Former Panthers golden boy Matt Moylan returns to his old stomping ground, which should create some interest. Now the whole world will be tipping Penrith on Friday night and so they should, but the Sharks will be loving that. They will also recall that when these sides met in round seven the Sharks were comfortable winners (although a few late tries to the Panthers made it look closer than it was). On that occasion the Sharks were without Paul Gallen and Wade Graham and lost Luke Lewis in the 13th minute. Back then the Sharks didn't have Woods or Bukuya coming off the bench either. I'm probably the only one, but I'm tipping the Sharks can win this with their big boppers.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 24 defeated Panthers 12

Newcastle Knights vs Parramatta Eels – Friday night – McDonald Jones Smart Stadium

We have had some better showings from the Eels during recent efforts, but their habit of losing is proving hard to break. Mitchell Pearce returns to boost the home sides fortunes, and they did beat the Eels 30-6 earlier in the year. Here comes my best Kanye West impersonation:

You know I've got to be right now, though the Knights can't get much Ponga.

Sheesh. That's terrible.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result – Knights 18 defeated Eels 16

Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs – Saturday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

The Bulldogs, like the Eels but even more so, have been better in recent weeks, but their late capitulation to the Raiders would be quite deflating. I doubt they've had enough time to pump themselves back up in time for a challenge from the in-form team in the NRL.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result – Rabbitohs 24 defeated Bulldogs 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm – Saturday night – Lottoland

Last week the Storm racked up a half century and this week they welcome back up to seven State of Origin players. Not many teams like to spend Saturday night at Brookvale, but the purple machine are on the verge of a top two finish and they have a track record of not letting such opportunities slip.

Verdict – Storm by 8

Result – Storm 14 defeated Sea Eagles 13

Canberra Raiders vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – GIO Stadium

Some people think I focus on the weather too much, but when the North Queenslanders wake up in Canberra on Saturday morning it will be -5 degrees. The Cowboys season is over and they'll spend the weekend in Canberra wishing they were somewhere else.

Verdict – Raiders by 10

Result – Raiders 38 defeated Cowboys 12

Brisbane Broncos vs New Zealand Warriors – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

7th plays 8th and if you just used round 17 as a guide you'd think it was 1st vs 18th. The Broncos didn't concede a point while the Warriors barely scored a point. I assume Peta Hiku has been on defensive drills this week but we can be sure the Broncos will be testing him on Sunday. I'm reluctant to write the Warriors off completely, but this is the time of the season (post-Origin) where the Warriors usually start their slide out of contention. Mr Thinker is planning to drag the mini-thinkers down to the ground for a rare daytime game for the Broncos. Fingers crossed for a contest.

Verdict – Broncos by 8

Result – Warriors 26 defeated Broncos 6

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Wests Tigers – Sunday afternoon – Jubilee Oval

The Dragons are short-priced favourites on Sunday but I'm taking them on. Four of the their all-important forward pack back up from Origin, and Ben Hunt had to play in the forwards for QLD too. There's also some very important inclusions for the Tigers this weekend (Matulino, Marshall, Grant, Nofoaluma, Liddle). The Dragons haven't lost a game at home all year so I've clearly broken my brain but:

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Tigers 20 defeated Dragons 16

Gold Coast Titans vs Sydney Roosters – Sunday night – Cbus Super Stadium

The Roosters should be nice and fresh after a week off, and there is some talk of resting Boyd Cordnor this weekend. I'm assuming Arrow and Wallace will be backing up for the Titans but they'll have heavy legs. Before last weekend the Titans looked like a team that could make a last ditch run at a top eight spot, but that dream is over now. Given their lack-lustre performance last Sunday, it's hard to imagine they'll give us much this Sunday.

Verdict – Roosters by 14

Result – Roosters 20 defeated Titans 12

Wally Lewis - round eighteen selections (in bold)

  • Knights vs EELS
  • Bulldogs vs RABBITOHS
  • Sea Eagles vs STORM
  • RAIDERS vs Cowboys
  • BRONCOS vs Warriors

Sorry I forgot to add my closing point
When they were about to announce the player of the series how many of you thought Billy Slater.... exactly

Mary S's picture

Hi Pabdul,
Seriously, I don't think anyone was more surprised than Billy Slater.
He was one of many good players to my way of thinking!

pabdul's picture

I don’t have anything against Slater
But feel for the more deserving
I know the feeling losing my best back trophy to the coach’s son

Christine 's picture

Thanks for everyone responding to my? About Billy Slater I was just interested in getting differing thoughts on it ...

NuL1F3's picture

Didn't think Storm were going to come away with that one!! Heart goes out to Sea Eagles. Come on COWBOYS! :D

NuL1F3's picture

Hmmm... Very well played Raiders. Certainly not the farewell tour that J.T. would have hoped for. Just too many mistakes.

NuL1F3's picture

Oh boy! And it just keeps getting worse D:

@ BigPete

Apologies for getting back so late but been otherwise engaged. Yeah, always dreaming of the LOS mate. My desktop picture is a photo I took in Chiang Mai (not Chiang Rai) so I look at it every day M-F and at home I have a visualisation board right in front of me on the wall that includes photos pertaining to TH(ailand). OK, Chiang Rai is basically due north of Pattaya (about 365 kms as the crow flies I reckon) and very close to where the borders of Myanmar (Burma) & Laos meet.

To be brutally honest, yes, I really do need to relocate there. It may sound strange or unpatriotic, but as I’ve said to many people many times … there is nothing and no-one in Australia that would keep me here. Mate, home is where the heart is and my heart is in TH. Always has been since the very first time I went there in ’85 (yes, I am that old ha-ha). IMO there’s nothing here that they don’t have that’s not up to my standard. I’m a simple guy with simple tastes but will agree that maybe our medical standards are higher. Other than that, TH is just as good and in some ways better. But hey, it’s all subjective eh?

Anyways, I’ve rambled on too long so better get off to bed as it’s just gone midnight here. Thanks for the comment mate. Stay well BigPete and everyone else too. Cheers.

I might clarify my position here.

Slater wouldn't be my pick for the Wally Lewis medal. I picked Tedesco before the series even started and I'd be happy to stick with that.

My point is that the way the result is determined looks flawed and probably needs adjusting. Meninga, Daley and Lockyer gave the medal to Slater using the scoring system that was in place.

Opinions are divided when it comes to picking a winner from the NSW side...and this is exactly why Slater ended up winning. Points were split among a number of NSW players, and it's why they won the series. Slater got 4 points from each judge in game 3, and picked up votes from all 3 judges in game 2. That was enough to get him in front against a whole bunch of Blues players.

For the record, Wally Lewis himself would have given it to another Blues player that no-one else has even mentioned.

If it was just up to Wally the medal would have gone to Damien Cook.

Yeah Thinker I kinda worked it out
It’s a bit like Rocky Laurie in 1980 and Preston Campbell in 2001 winning the Dally M their teams weren’t the best but because of their dominance in their own team they got ahead of a Steve Mortimer or a Andrew Johns
By the way when I missed out on the best back trophy the next year I actually won it and the coaches son got most improved
But for some strange reason his trophy was twice the size of mine

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks NuLif3 - some people have feelings, especially for a team many dislike. I thought we had it, but for that last penalty. Trent H missed a dropped goal, which might have got us extra time and depending on soreness and tiredness of Storm, we might have come away with the win.
Cheers Champ and keep well
Big Pete in a VERY icy Bx (FYI - minus 7 here at 8am)

Baggy_Gee's picture

I like the fact that they didn't grab a player from the winning team as the default man ofvthe series, but there should be the caveat that you play all 3 games, why not Gagai, or McGuire who played all the games.

BigPeteBx's picture

Morning Newbie, when you awaken.
Understand your feelings and the love for a Singha........I remember you - Frank Ifield hummin.
Thanks for the geography on Chang Rai. I think somehow in Siam calculations, that Chang Mai was the early capital of Siam, now Thailand. I love my history and that seems to ring a bell from by tour there in mid-late 80's.
Before you go disappearing, please give Thinker the permission to send me your home email address and we will keep in touch. You never know, you might run into my Scottish Everton fanatic who relocated from here.

You haven't rambled on. Its telling it how it is and that takes time.
Cheers and keep well, like I try to - Big Pete in Icy Bx.

How the hell do you lose so badly one week and then play like superstars the next? Has there ever been a more Jekyll & Hyde team in the NRL than the Warriors? I'm shaking my head...

Rick's picture

I really have to agree with you on this one Steel unbelievable result only two tipsters were with the Warriors this round and yet they pull that one out of the hat amazing.

manyana's picture

You're not the only one, Steel Panther. I think the Broncos could use some tackling practice. It was a great game by the Warriors, but a very poor performance from the Broncos.
Very disappointing!!

pabdul's picture

How come Jason Akamanis is playing five eighth for the dragons?

Thinker...did you manage to get to Suncorp this afternoon? Brisbane haven't played that bad for a wee while. After Oates butchered that try they never got out of first gear. I thought Milford and McCullough were both poor for the homeside whereas Johnson turned up for the Warriors for a change.

The Thinker's picture

I did Steel. Perfect conditions for football. Ordinary performance by the Broncos.

The Warriors looked good throughout....gosh it's hard to get a read on them.

Steel Panther's picture

That's an understatement Thinker!!! Great tip on the Tigers. Well done.

a's picture

Well done on the Tigers Thinker

The Thinker's picture

Even jagged the margin right. I'm coming good late in the season.

The money is rolling in for the Titans to knock off the Chooks with all the line-up changes. Should be interesting.

NuL1F3's picture

My picks were poor this week :O My thoughts exactly SP!! HOW?! Haha :P

BigPeteBx's picture

Funny you know Pab - I was thinking similar.
Like, Changa's white boots and Whiddops new hair - both losers on their day.
Cheers - Big Pete (just a little west of ya Chooky)

Mary s
See I should have taken my own advice & changed my tip from broncos to warriors because jimmy the jet was out & tevita pangi but I stuck with my original selections & finished on 6 / 8 , could have done better ...

Mary S's picture

I know what you're saying Christine. Trouble is, hind sight is a wonderful thing. I would have a better score than 5/8 if I hadn't changed my selection at the last minute!!
Cheers

Greetings football fans

I have updated the tipping comp and the NRL ladder. For the first time in quite some time Rocket Ryan has some company at the top of the tipping comp. Tiger Girl with an impressive 7 from 8 has joined him at the top.

Tiger Girl top scored for the round...along with some noob called The Thinker, who is coming from nowhere and making a run at the title.

The tipping page for round 19 has been published, and I'll have my tips and previews done on Tuesday.

All the best

tigerholic's picture

Well done Tiger Girl and Thinker, I wish I had more confidence in my Tigers.

Have a great week folks.

Tiger
