Round four selections

Three things The Thinker learned in round three

  1. There has been plenty of talk about the penalty counts...and you've needed all of your fingers and toes to keep track, but there were slightly less penalties in round 3 (averaging just less than 18 per game) than rounds 1 and 2. Hopefully this is because the players are learning to do the right thing.
  2. Luke Keary is getting talked up as an option for NSW  in the Origin series. At the risk of starting another turf war, Keary was born in Ipswich, lived there until he was 10 and was part of an emerging QLD origin squad not so long ago.
  3. With the launch of the NRL womens competition in 2018 I expect the New Zealand Warriors will finally win their first Premiership trophy (and the Sharks are entitled to be filthy that they didn't get a slot).

North Queensland Cowboys vs Penrith Panthers – Thursday night – 1300SMILES Stadium

The Cowboys don't like Thursday night games at the best of times, but with three quarters of their territory underwater at the minute, pulling a decent crowd will be quite the challenge. Paul Green chose his words wisely with his criticism of the team at the post-match press conference a week ago – his words may have had a little more colour in the sheds. The Storm are very good at shutting down Taumalolo but most other teams can't. He's likely to produce an effort this week. The Panthers (and possibly NSW) are without Cleary for up to ten weeks. With Maloney and Peachey they aren't shy of playmaking options (or goalkickers) but I'm not telling you anything you don't know by saying the Panthers are a better side with Cleary holding the steering wheel. The potential return of Coote puts the Cowboys best spine on the paddock and they look the winner at home.

Verdict – Cowboys by 8

Result – Panthers 33 defeated Cowboys 14

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Friday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

It's become the traditional Good Friday clash and fans of both clubs will be pleased to see their teams score their first win of the season in round three. Reynolds is unlikely to return but you wouldn't rush him back anyway, given what this side did in round 3 to a team that won 54-0 in round 2. Did the Sea Eagles have a sense that salary cap news was looming and played accordingly? Better stuff from the Bulldogs too but their opponent did play out the game without their conductor (and he spent 20 minutes on one leg when he was out there). Given the convincing margin of victory for the Rabbits,  versus the Bulldogs hanging on for two points (and one of their tries was dubious at best), I'm with the Easter bunnies on Good Friday. Rabbit season.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 4

Result – Rabbitohs 20 defeated Bulldogs 16

Cronulla Sharks vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Southern Cross Group Stadium

In round 3 the Storm played the Cowboys in a replay of the 2017 grand final, and here we have a replay of the 2016 grand final. The Sharks scored their first win of the season last weekend, but it came at the expense of the Eels and there's some doubt on that form right now. The Storm accounted for the Cowboys in a convincing display and they'll be focussed on reducing their indiscretions (and penalties conceded). Rest assured that Paul Gallen will be reminding the referees at every opportunity just how much the Storm are doing wrong. There's expectations that Moylan will play but I wouldn't be locking that in just yet – Bukuya is definitely out, and that's one less big fit body for the purple machine to manage. Kaufusi looks set to return in purple and Kenny Bromwich could be back too. I foolishly took the Storm on last week but I doubt I'll be taking them on very often.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Sharks 14 defeated Storm 4

Sydney Roosters vs New Zealand Warriors – Saturday afternoon – Allianz Stadium

It wouldn't have looked like the match of the round a month ago, but it sure does now. A resurgent Roosters takes on the undefeated Warriors. Note that if the Warriors win on Easter Saturday they will win their first four games of the season for the first time ever. I've always said that when the Warriors are playing well they are a joy to watch, and this season has been no exception, but there's a difference this season. This season we have seen a fortitude in defence that the Warriors haven't had for a very long time (if ever). They'll need a fortified defence though, as the tricolours have scored 68 points in their last two games while conceding just 20. Last week they put the previously undefeated Knights to the sword. This Warriors side doesn't look like a side that will get sworded, but these Chooks have points in them. Compulsory viewing...the chickens to keep their beaks in front.

Verdict – Roosters by 7

Result – Warriors 30 defeated Roosters 6

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Lottoland

The most peculiar thing about Manly cheating the salary cap is that they still paid their squad less than a lot of other teams were paid – they just paid them the wrong way. Still....rules are rules, and as much as some people may not like the salary cap there is no doubt it goes a long way toward giving us one of the most even sporting competitions on the planet. More positives than negatives I say. Manly may have some other issues soon too because the company that pays for the naming rights to Brookvale Oval may not have much reason to hang around in Australia for much longer...but I'll leave that discussion for another day. Ricky Stuart has already pulled out his annual post-match spray and it was pretty restrained by his standards – I do hope we get to see it again this season. If the Raiders keep losing games they are winning it's only a matter of time. Manly are about as predictable as a service station meat pie at the minute so I can't tip them with a shred of confidence, but they are back at Brookvale for the second time this season...and you can all remember what they did the first time.

Verdict – Sea Eagles by 8

Result – Sea Eagles 32 defeated Raiders 16

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Newcastle Knights – Sunday afternoon – WIN Stadium

The Dragons have flown the gates and sit atop the NRL ladder but they've had strong starts in the past and still fallen short. Just last season they were strong early and (just) missed the top eight. We might have a better read on how the good the Dragons are after this game. If the result is anything like the Roosters win over the Knights in round 3 the Dragons are the real deal. I think they are. Brock Lamb comes in for Connor Watson and Heighington returns on the bench. The Dragons are unchanged.

Verdict – Dragons by 18

Result – Dragons 30 defeated Knights 12

Brisbane Broncos vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday night – Suncorp Stadium

It would make more sense if this game was played on the Gold Coast, because half of Brisbane leaves Brisbane for the coast on the Easter weekend anyway. In any case, there'll be more than enough locals avoiding the Commonwealth Games to keep the turnstiles ticking over. Not so long ago this local derby was one of the season highlights, but it's well and truly lost its crown to the other Queensland Derby in recent years. The injuries to Oates and Pangai Jnr are not insignificant, but Jonus Pearson is no slouch and the Broncos pack has enough starch in it. The Titans pack will find the Broncos forwards easier to manage than the Dragons, but it's hard to see them doing enough to win.

Verdict – Broncos by 10

Result – Titans 26 defeated Broncos 14

Wests Tigers vs Parramatta Eels – Monday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

If you're in Sydney for Easter and you're looking for something to do, then this is something you should do. The game itself will (hopefully) be entertaining enough, but more importantly this is Stay Kind day. There's plenty of good causes out there, but this is definitely one of them, and you can find out more here. Let's hope kindness prevails, and the Tigers in a thriller.

Verdict – Tigers by 4

Result – Tigers 30 defeated Eels 20

Wally Lewis - round four selections (in bold)

  • RABBITOHS vs Bulldogs

Unbelievable
The referees and penalties are like Michael Phelps and swimming
Every time I see them they seem to be on world record pace

Baggy_Gee's picture

And also like Phelps they are also on the record for something else as well.

a's picture

Wow 30 penalties in the Sharks and Storm game what a rubbish game that was

Mary S's picture

Cameron Smith would not appreciate being sent to the sin bin!!

MGM's picture

Thank you Thinker for the quick response and correction to my score (I need every point I can get with this crazy first month of the season!)
Did everyone that saw Inglis' try near the end of the fist half against the Dogs feel the injustice that I did when Josh Jackson wasn't allowed to get back in position ? When Jackson protested straight after, Ref Cummins said "I didn't realise, sorry" ... Bullshit! He was calling for the Dog's captain, saying "where's Jackson , where's the captain" and then WATCHED as Jackson ran the 45metres over to him !!... and what a pointless exercise it was anyway- did he give Jackson a chance to even follow his pointless instruction to warn the players -NO, so the only point it all served was to get the captain out of position!...
Here's an angle that may not be as crazy as it first sounds - the obstruction rule (impeding a defensive player from making a tackle) is usually only imposed when a try is scored, with replay after replay by the video ref. The bunker should have intervened and disallowed that try because Cummins was guilty of blatant obstruction on Josh Jackson ... since when is "I didn't mean to" or "I didn't realise" ever been an acceptable excuse for obstruction ?!

Steel Panther's picture

With Checchin you expect a lot of penalties anyway as he is the most pedantic ref.

MGM...and didn't one of the refs (can't remember if it was Cummins) impede Hopoate when Sths scored one of their other tries?

Baggy_Gee's picture

There was also a March of soft penalties to get them into range for the first one if you remember. They only penalty that annoyed me all night was a play the ball one, last week the BOYS were penalised for playing the ball with a guy dropped over their shoulders, last night the exact same situation and the penalty goes against the tackling side.

christine 's picture

Now we have seen all Cameron smith getting sin binned , he's a protected species ...

christine 's picture

They want to speed up this great game of ours but all they're doing is ruining it with over the top penalties & the bunker calls , todd Greenberg get it right the fans are suffering ...

BigPeteBx's picture

Good Easter Saturday morning to you Steely.
Hope all is well, in your neck of the woods mate.
Yes, looks like refs are stepping up a gear this year, with back-chat, as well and marching on another 5 or so yards, depending on their stride.

Correct with blowing the whistle - more biff in that match, than a Reg Reagan (Matty J) advert.

Cheers and keep well
Big Pete

Agree there Mark A with 13 v 13 and our previous thoughts on The Cap, along with Baggy's.
We are all here for the right/same purpose - to play the bloody game and not rort it.

We see/hear enough in the horse racing game. Problem is, the poor horse has no say, in some mongrel, jamming him with a needle.

Just a tip for you - this next is horse power, but not horses or greyhounds.
The 6 Hour Race is on tv this weekend. yes we have several top line races here, each year now. This event is for privateers, the starting out fellows - gives them their chance to strut their stuff, when they wouldn't otherwise get a chance. Some 12 Hour and V8 drivers here as well. Chas Mostert, Steve Owen & Tim Slade are amongst them.
Several of our local drivers are in there and well accustomed to the track. FOX Sports showing it - if you, or any of our Thinkers are interested. The 6 Hour flag, falls around 11.30am

Cheers and enjoy your long weekend.
Keep well ALL.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

U r certainly on the money there Christine.
Hope u r well or better.
That Souths v Dogs match, had more stoppages, due to personal disagreements and high blood pressure run-off, than many that we presently recall. It slowed the game down, like boxing match grapples.

Penalties are a necessity, if they reflect the punishment.
The Bunker (Bugger), as you once commented, is also a necessity to give the KFC brand, a bit of additional exposure. Now, NRL wants to again penalise clubs, for salary cap breaches. There are times, where The Bunker is a breach, on our viewing rights and chance for the refs to catch up with themselves, or get their breath back.

Cheers, keep well and have a nice Easter.
Big Pete in Gods Country (Heaven if you like!).

Big pete I didn't want to say it on this site but it would seem I came in contact with T B some 31 years ago but I have never shown or had any symptoms but it can all resurface when they treat me for the ms so they tried to put me on tablets to get it out of my system but the tablets are that bad I couldn't function so that's the reason I didn't go in to TAD's comp I couldn't even walk from one room to the next without falling or even sit up right in a chair the tablets make you that weak but when you have ms you have a lowered ammune system & to treat me for the ms it's going to lower my immune system even more which can make the T B resurface again in which case I will have no choice but to go on those tablets , anyway big pete such is life we all have our problems don't we ...

christine 's picture

Spell check police I know I spelt immune wrong & I don't care ...

christine 's picture

Big pete How are you going with your eyes now ? ...

Baggy_Gee's picture

Thanks for the word on the 6 hour Pete. I knew we had the 12 hour at Bathurst, bit sad that the only way I can follow the smaller one is on pay. Vote for me to take the refs bosses job, short term pain for long term gain. I'll make them impartial again.

christine 's picture

Soon we will see refs on the sideline eating kfc & I hope they choke on it ...

MGM's picture

YES, I saw that too! ... and the channel nine commentators didn't even mention it, they were too busy trying to be funny about nothing important.
I didn't include that because I'd already had enough of a rant and don't want to make a bad first impression But you're dead right Steely, that's TWO tries and a win to the Dogs instead of a loss.
And I actively DIS-like the Dogs ,but I dislike billshit a whole lot more.

christine 's picture

TAD I bet you didn't see cam smith being binned for 10 mins coming ? what a shame no one had it as there prediction for this season ...

MGM's picture

Hello to all my fellow tipsters.
In case I've given the impression so far that I'm "anti-referee"(please see my comment on the Dogs v Souths fiasco) , I've copied below a comment I sent to the Continuous Call Team @ 2GB whilst they were whinging about all the penalties this year ...
Can you guys pleeeaase stop with the hypocrisy ... for the last few years at least you have quite rightly been crying out for the play of the ball to be cleaned up and for tackled players to, for God's sake, stop putting the ball on the ground while they're still on their hands and knees ... and the other favourite whinge has been players not getting back the ten .. and quite rightly so !!.. especially off their try line when the attacking side is 2 or 4 metres away and needs and deserves every inch ...................... it's already much better this year ... LOOK at the play of the ball NOW , but the spin off from that is, naturally, holding back in the defensive line which is going to take a bit longer for the players to get through their thick heads (Helloooo Fafita). .... We wanted these parts of the game cleaned up and WELL DONE you referees for taking on such a hard task and DON'T back off just because these hypocrites thought it would be easy and happen over-night !!

The Annoying Devil's picture

Hi Christine
I can’t believe in such a long career that was the first time he’s been to the bin
He has that much say in a game it was like sending off one of their own

BigPeteBx's picture

I don't really worry about spellcheck so much, when "blogging".
Its one of those things that can happen Chris, as we have so much in the mind to get to the brain, to the fingers, to the keyboard. Anything can happen on its journey!!!!
I myself am rather particular about comma's and pause in sentences, so that two things don't run into each other, to become one and I get the full monty, from somewhere here, about having a go at them.
Sheeeesh!!!!!
Cheers Chris - Big Pete

The Annoying Devil's picture

Just on the josh Jackson thing
The bulldogs players need to be back on side before Souths can take the tap which they were as they were behind the try line. It’s not up to the ref to make sure their in position just to make sure on side couldn’t they all push out and man up while he was caught in the middle or is he the only one who can tackle out wide

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey TAD - hope u r enjoying it here and the Easter break.
You'd also think it was like the sending off, of the 3rd ref, when Cam got binned. However, he's been very repetitious, over the past seasons and no doubt the refs, might have been taking a deep look into their crystal ball. Ok - plural if you wish mate.

Cheers and keep well
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks for asking Chris.
Had the cataract/lens job done last September, as we are aware.
Now getting ready for the other eye, but in between had the vitrectomy for floaters (what an experience that was) and whilst there, they found the retina tearing. First 5 nights I had to sleep sitting up, not allowed to lay flat.
I can see, but now with a slight blurr, as many here will attest to, before they have their cataracts done. Glare can be my worst enemy.

Cheers mate and keep well
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Chris with the eating of KFC, but those without the guts to stand up to some of the let go, they let go - could be eating Kit-E-Kat.

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Baggy - you've got my vote.
If Bill Harrigan hasn't slowed down too much, re-employ him.
One of the fittest if not the fittest and best, in his time.
Ex-cop from TRG, and they me lad, were extra fit.
I met him a couple of times through PBC/PCYC movement, when they came to Bathurst as "crowd control" for the races.

Cheers - Big Pete

christine 's picture

Big Pete I will try to improve on the use of my comma's for you I for one don't mind if sentences run into each other ,,, ...

BigPeteBx's picture

I understand Chris - if there is anything really personal, you'd like to discuss, send it to our good friend Thinker and he can email it.
TAD seems understanding of us, who didn't make the grade in his comp. He even offered me to still participate, but we couldn't win the gold medal.

Cheers and watch out for my mate The Easter Bunny aka The Rabbit.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Chris - I wasn't referring to you or others. I was only indicating the way I like to prefer, to set my lines out.
I'd hate to start a war with Putin, Kim Jong or Donny.

Steel Panther's picture

Good to see you posting again Big Pete. Half time in the Warriors game & I'm stunned at what I'm seeing. I keep waiting for the "what we've become used to" Warriors to resurface. Keep well!!!

BigPeteBx's picture

No probs on 6 Hour Baggy G.
I don't have Pay TV either!
But try a link from your computer, as I seem to think that Supercars site is also showing/previewing the race, along with FOX.
At least you will get ongoing updates.

You'd like this event, like others, who might like the occasional rev (NRL refs included), as you'd appreciate the "up and comers" will have somewhere, to start out from.
Cheers - Big Pete from Bx (where the engines are roaring and causing Thunder on The Mount).

BigPeteBx's picture

Struth Steely - Roosters must have indulged in the Easter chockies too soon. Mind you, they are playing at home and Warriors weren't good travellers, over the past few seasons.
I bow, to me Sydney FC and wonder where me Red Devils will end this season. Although, they are into FA Cup semis, at the mo and will play Spurs for the right to play in big one.
Cheers Sporting Cobber - Big Pete

The Annoying Devil's picture

Hey Pete I know one thing your old sparring partner pabdul will be inching closer to end of the ledge with this result

Steel Panther's picture

TAD....the Roosters awful tonight. Is Cronk even playing?

The Annoying Devil's picture

They’re terrible steel
I wasn’t sure Cronk was playing till he kicked it out on the full

Steel Panther's picture

I honestly thought that with Johnson out the Warriors would get killed. I'm stunned!!! That's Mitchell kicked out on the full twice now from the restart...

a's picture

Good to see you posting BigPete

The Annoying Devil's picture

Sometimes that happens when you lose your main playmaker the others lift
Look at Souths winning without Reynolds and panthers winning without Cleary and last year cowboys without Thurston

Baggy_Gee's picture

I would have loved to see the money being offered for the Warriors to go 4-0 to begin the season. Hats off to them, they have kicked it together for at least a few rounds. If only the BOYS could follow their example and get a few wins together.

Meanwhile Raiders are 0-4 to start the season

Evenin TAD - Not sure what Pab's doing these days.
he's in recluse and gave me/us the flick, well before the NRL season finished last year.
I gave him an offer to come and meet me at Qudo's Arena when Paul McCartney Concert was on. He never replied.
But, I know how he feels, as Manly lost 5 straight games a few seasons ago, under Tooves and still made semi's. Chooks just need to gel, but more so at home.

AFL would have been another thing today, as his and my teams played. Well not the one his love is in, but his "residential neighbourly team".
Pad was more of a partner here with humour ending with sarcasm. The real sparring partner, has fallen into a Smiths Crisps bag.

I think I just joined The A Comp exit this week as well!

Cheers TAD - keep watch for my mate late tonight, bouncing around with a bag full of eggs - chocolate ones, not chook ones.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Hey Steely - is Cronk still in Melbourne?
Nah, he and his partner have bought in Sydney.
Maybe he got caught in a traffic jam. The thing is with this years NRL, one man isn't going to win the comp for anyone. It will be team efforts, big team efforts, that will get teams home and win matches/comps this year.

Shouldn't be too long and Spartan should spear onto the scene with his roundup posting of The Bluebags' cousins, downfall.
Cheers and well done to your Warriors.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

I've been about 'a', but quietly.
Today's my biggest postings, to date.
No need to remind me, Storm just put me out of your A Comp this week.

BTW - any of you guys/Cowboys coming down this way, for Round 9 on 4th May?
You (Cowboys) play Panthers again, oh so soon - here in my grazing pastures.

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes 'a' - you can say that again.
Go Mighty Manly!!!!!
So far, won 2 from 4 and those two at home.

Cheers - Big Pete

christine 's picture

Big pete there won't be any more talk of it , how good was it to see roosters being beaten by warriors , warriors certainly are playing like they have something to prove this year , Thinker I apologise to you for the comment I posted earlier on , I just wanted you all to understand whats been going on for me & I will keep it nrl talk from now on ok ...

BigPeteBx's picture

'A' - I'll retract that.
Cows put me out - either way I was on the outer.
Benched in Round 4.
Good luck with the comp
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

I don't think that Thinker minds Christine - we are a friendly lot here, or meant to be. How on earth do you get to talk with people here.
Pick up the phone and dial, isn't that easy.
Either way Christine - take it steady Miss and keep the airwaves alive here.
Cheers - Big Pete

The Annoying Devil's picture

Thanks for the update Pete
It’s great to hear your eyes are improving
I guess if there is an upside you get to wear an eye patch outside of fancy dress parties and wiggle concerts
I wore one walking down the street once and my eye was ok but the parrot wasn’t
