Round sixteen selections

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Parramatta Eels – Thursday night – WIN Stadium

First plays last but this isn't a formality, with a fair chunk of the Dragons seventeen backing up (and backing up quickly) from representative duties. Tyson Frizell won't play, but the other eight have been named. It's a big ask, but the Eels are a big basket case. There could be a few at Parramatta (Norman and Hayne spring to mind) who might be playing to pick up new contracts elsewhere next season, but that doesn't mean they'll play like a team.

Verdict – Dragons by 8

Result – Dragons 20 defeated Eels 18

New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

On paper the Sharks look like they have an edge in the forwards here, and they've rushed the big teddy bear Aaron Woods straight into the seventeen – I expect he'll go well. Valentine Holmes at fullback will be wanting to impress too. There's no doubt he wants a gig somewhere as a fullback, and a few teams (Cowboys definitely and Broncos probably) will be keeping an eye on him. The Warriors have been tough to beat at home this season but I'm with the visitors here.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 18 defeated Warriors 15

Sydney Roosters vs Melbourne Storm – Friday night – Adelaide Oval

This game heads back to Adelaide again and this time around Cooper Cronk will be facing off against the Storm. The absence of Waerea-Hargreaves and Cordnor for the Chooks have me leaning purple, although the Storm are missing a few big boppers themselves. If Asofa-Solomona can't find a functioning airplane I'd lean the other way, and if Billy Slater is rested I'd lean heavily the other way, but based on the teams as named it's the Storm for me. For those of you that don't have to tip as early as I do I urge you to keep your eye out for team changes.

Verdict – Storm by 4

Result – Storm 9 defeated Roosters 8

Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles – Saturday afternoon – Panthers Stadium

The Panthers have named their Origin players and they should back up (although Maloney isn't getting any younger). Just as importantly Kikau returns and he adds an X factor in the middle. Manly look like a team that have put a line through their season already, and they haven't beaten Penrith at Penrith since 2011.

Verdict – Panthers by 10

Result – Sea Eagles 18 defeated Panthers 10

Newcastle Knights vs Canterbury Bulldogs – Saturday night – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Knights don't start as warm favourites too often but this Bulldogs side is barely recognisable. While this doesn't look like much of a game the Novacastrians will be out in force and the Knights will give the locals a good night out. And Ponga.

Verdict – Knights by 14

Result – Bulldogs 36 defeated Knights 16

Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders – Saturday night – Suncorp Stadium

What a difference a Hodgson makes. The Raiders were an entirely different proposition with his return last round, and if they bring that form again they'll be winning here too. If they did I wouldn't be surprised but I want to see it happen before I'm convinced that the Raiders are still a top eight proposition. Their only two wins away from home this season are against the Cowboys and the Tigers, and I think the Broncos are better than that. Not much better mind you. Could be the game of the round this one.

Verdict – Broncos by 2

Result – Broncos 26 defeated Raiders 22

Wests Tigers vs Gold Coast Titans – Sunday afternoon – Leichhardt Oval

The return of Robbie Farah couldn't be better timed, as he's back for a Sunday afternoon at the picturesque Leichhardt Oval. But he's not the only new face at the Tigers, with Moses Mbye slotting into the fullback role. Handy inclusions and the Tigers are warm favourites, but I'm pretty keen on the Titans in an upset here. It's a good looking pack of forwards and a fairly settled backline, taking on a team that may take a week or two to get their combinations right.

Verdict – Titans by 4

Result – Titans 30 defeated Tigers 12

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs North Queensland Cowboys – Sunday afternoon – Barlow Park

I was lucky enough to be up north for the Cowboys narrow loss to the Warriors in round 15, and the general feeling in the room was that the loss that night spelled the end of their finals aspirations this season. I was also lucky enough to be up north for the Cowboys narrow loss to the Rabbitohs earlier this season. The Cowboys were a little unlucky that night, but back then they had something to play for, and the only thing they have left to play for is pride. I doubt that's enough against a genuine premiership contender. Note the location though folks. Maybe, just maybe, the extra travel for the Bunnies gives the Cowboys a sniff here. I can't tip them though.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 10

Result – Rabbitohs 21 defeated Cowboys 20

I think video refs should rule on foward passes

You only have til midnight tonight to put you next stage tips in. Here are the games, the scores so far followed by my tips.

** The other important rule is when is a draw. A draw is declared if the game goes to penalty shootout (regardless of the shootout result) If the game is won in extra time, that’s not a draw - it’s a win for that team.

Hey Coach, great info there and I get all that and I agree with most of it. However, in regards to try's scored, I think there is enough camera's to give enough evidence of a blatant forward pass which should be used by video refs. Like you said, refs and linemen call on forward passes in the field of play and they get that right 90% of the time, which is a shitload better then it used to be. You know yourself that there is a hell of a lot of forward passes leading to tries being scored now and I really think its an easy fix.

Coach Potato's picture

Really?
Where’s the ego in expressing my opinion?

Coach Potato's picture

How is it my fault that I choose to express. and others either choose not to, or else couldn’t care less?

How is that anything to do with ego?

This is a forum I thought.

Week in, week out there were 20-30 posts a week. Now there are hundreds, and lots are mine - but not all of them. So what would you rather?

Coach Potato's picture

Thanks Tails, you are right about the blind-eye forward passes. They should be checked without fear of backlash by the affected team. A bit horrible to think, but I’m sure a great build up, and this thing they called “deserved a try” gets away with a forward pass at the end. It’s just crap. Nothing is deserving of a try unless if passes the rules of the game.

Coach Potato's picture

Tailspin and anyone else who may have a “passing” interest.

Watch this video carefully.

It should totally silence those who insist that a ball caught in front, is always forward.

Here, as the car is moving along, the ball is thrown out the window just straight out 90 degrees, some would call it a very flat pass. But watch where it lands. Two car spaces in front, that’s right about 5 metres in front of where it was thrown.

The player running at speed has the same influence over the football. This is what they speak of on page 22 of the rulebook.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-VJzr_aSSE4

pabdul's picture

Not a very good example coach
The girl throws the ball forward and ends up where she threw it forward but because the car is moving it gives the illusion that the ball is thrown flat which it wasn’t
When you pass a ball in footy your moving and so is the receiver but in this case the thrower is moving and the car spaces are not

Coach Potato's picture

Agree to disagree.
I think it’s a perfect example of the balls kinetic energy.

I was talking about the percentage of viewers who believe that line markings point to point can judge a pass forward - and I am saying that’s not entirely true. The car spaces are not in like the line markings on the footy field.

Yes, the ball is thrown half a yard foward, why then does it land 5m in front of the point from where it was thrown. Why didn’t it land only half a yard on front of where it was thrown. It’s because the ball being carried at speed, possesses that same speed for a short time after it is passed. Eg player makes a break and is running at 25km/h at the time of passing, the ball possesses 25km/h forward momentum. They say the ball drifts forward but it’s not drifting at all. It has energy relating to the speed of the ball passer.

If you want to believe that the Earth is still flat, it’s a free world.

pabdul's picture

You should be watching your panthers instead of trying to prove people wrong though the game is woeful with more mistakes than your physics exam
I like how one of the commentators said it’s because of the bye
Well let me tell you when I come back from a weeks leave Istill remember my job skills

Tailspin's picture

I love the banter, but just let me emphasise that I used the word blatant, which means a blind man couldn't miss it.

Coach Potato's picture

Yeah Panthers no good today. You concentrate on kicking a ball over from in front you joker.

pabdul's picture

And all this time I though Egomaniac was a song from Flashdance

Coach Potato's picture

Doesn’t take ego to stand up for myself.

Every thing I write about you want to pick apart. Go and have a paid for, lie down I could suggest.

mark ashford's picture

Coach we went through this "kinetic energy" thing a couple of years ago.
Theoretically you are correct and some passes thrown, shall we say, flat do float forward.
I think that what most are saying is there are a number of blatant forward passes in a lot of our games that go undetected.
" You are charging to the line not too far away and see your unmarked winger racing up the sideline. Your brain calculates where he'll be when he receives the pass and tells you he'll be offside.
Do you
1 Let it go anyway and hope you get away with it (90 % of current players) or
2 Look for an alternative play (guess that leaves 10%)
With the speed of the game now you can't blame the players.
We have 2 refs and 2 linespersons (hopefully keeping up with the play) to call forward passes.
If we pass the responsibility to the Video ref (and it can't be done while play continues) we'll end up with an 80 minute game down to 40 something.
For most of this great game we've had a single ref and went home happy. (If your team won of course the rest was wonderful pubtalk like "how did the ref miss that")
As the best contact sport in the world it will never be perfect.
Unlike lots of things today humans are involved and I say "thank heavens" for that

pabdul's picture

As you say coach it’s a forum and your not always right so if your putting out so much info expect some criticism if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen
And don’t get offended by the ego thing just remember it’s not a dirty world - skyhooks

Rocket Ryan's picture

Big Pete let the Eagles Fly without you today bad luck old mate

Coach Potato's picture

I grew up my whole life until a few years back thinking it was “Eagle is not a dirty word”.
And I also spent the same amount of tome thinking What the hell are they talking about, it’s wash your mouth out vocabulary.

I agree mark and Tails, the blatant ones need to be reviewed. Maloney’s pass to Addo-Carr should have been called. The Sharks pass last night should have been called. Then there’s the other side of the coin where they repeatedly pull up fair passes based on the point to point rationale when their own rulebook says they can’t do that.

I have no issue with anyone on this page, but where is this ego thing coming from. As I have said, show me someone who believes their own opinions are wrong! (ie You all think your own opinions are right too, yeah ? So where does that place your own egos?)

Oh, I see. Just the same as me.

mark ashford's picture

What is going on in this comp.
Panthers equal second get beaten by Eagles 3 from the bottom.
I can hear Fortress yelling from the tops of North Head.
But can't hear much from Coach.
Eels on the bottom unlucky to go down to Dragons on top.
This is the year of upsets.

Baggy_Gee's picture

My biggest issue with forward passes are not the long pass that drifts forward, it is the short ball in the line where the target is in the defensive line and being ignored as the man without the ball only to receive it a moment later. I understand what people are saying about imparted relative velocity, but have always thought of it as a lazy excuse .

Coach Potato's picture

Your NBN must be on by blink if that’s the case.

We’ve only seen a few games this week, so let’s see how the rest of the week pans out. I predict much of the same chaos. I think the recent bye, plus last weeks pseudo bye mean that large groups of players have only hit the field twice in a month. Rust is only to be expected I would have thought.

Steel Panther's picture

No one on here tipped Manly. And the Dogs have just scored first against Newcastle...

Coach Potato's picture

I can actually understand the Latrell from Hell.

I mean, really, who practices goal kicking from in front anyway. It’s the ones wide out you work on.

Just jokes. Was a Barry Crocker.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy
There's a "drifter" and a "blatant" not rocket science (no reference to you Ryan) surely can't be to hard to tell the difference.

mark ashford's picture

Coach on Letrell
Sure he is a great player and sometimes a good goal kicker.
But for mine he's a young man with anger issues.
When he scores a try he's giving it to the defence.
When he's tackled he gives it to the opposition.
Has a great career in front of him, just hope he doesn't take his anger off the field.

Coach Potato's picture

forward passes out of dummy half, and the no-look passes back on the inside that are mostly forward.

The refs are hesitant to pull too many up because they don’t want the stop/start play. Repeat. Repeat. The flow of the game has nothing to do with the ref. They aren’t the bloody conductor of an orchestra. It’s their job to call every forward pass that’s thrown.

Coach Potato's picture

Did everyone miss my post on Jack Wighton? No one cares?

He played two months on the premise that he was waiting for his day in court over assault charges. Then when his day comes, he pleads guilty.

So what was his claim to being on the field all those weeks? One would assume it was on the basis that he was pleading innocence.

mark ashford's picture

Coach didn't miss your post but admit I hadn't heard anything about Wighton's actions.
A quick google look has enlightened me.
4 charges of assault causing harm and public urination.
Raiders tried to shield him but he has now pled guilty.
Can't erase the past two months but he must be gone.
Kinda makes you feel a bit for Todd Carney who only tried to dampen his own mouth.

Baggy_Gee's picture

All I read was he pleaded guilty to doing something stupid. He has the brains of a limp noodle and deserves what he copes as long as it isn't a slap on the wrist. He has been over here long enough to know better and to be incarcerated as a national.

a's picture

Yeah Penrith played terribly

Coach Potato's picture

Every player that’s ever played on awaiting court hearing was on the basis that they should not be classed as guilty without their case being heard. They all were adamant they were innocent. They rightfully played on because who was to know if they would be found guilty or not.

This guy has known his own guilt all along, and admitted as much in court. So he had no right to play prior to court. He should have been stood down the day after. Surely the Raiders were made aware of his guilt???? I hope not. Else did he tell Raiders he was innocent??? and now they want a please explain?

Either way he has helped his side win games, and aided the team to improve their for and against all these weeks. It shouldn’t have been allowed to happen (unless as I say, he was lying to the Raiders about his guilt)

Coach Potato's picture

Bx, happy for you to win today afterall we ended your season last September so fairs fair.

Thanks Coach with WC Final 16.
I was going to send you my teams before I went out.
I have sent them in.
Struth mate - talk about all over the ballpark scores.

I've seen some comments both here and emails.
Its tipping comps where you are meant to rule by the head, not heart.
Either Penrith played like something out of a cows backside, or Manly got it together. When the chips are down, in years gone by, Penrith has been a graveyard to Manly.

Maybe the Chooks should watch some W/Cup footy and see how to kick goals. Hitting the upright, plumb in front - what a shocker. Yes, I tipped Chooks at home.

Cheers Coach - Big Pete OR Bx

BigPeteBx's picture

Hint hint Steely.
Yes, I went against them, especially out Penrith way, as it is a known graveyard to Manly. That's tipping mate.
I didn't see where Screaming Eagle tipped this round either.
I was just sick of the crap that is being served up and all the off field sages/drama's going on - there'll be more.

Cheers mate and keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Rocket, as I've said to others - that's tipping.
So much crap results being served up by Manly.
A supporter can take so much, but when it comes to tipping comps - gut feel often helps.
They'll win enough to avoid wooden spoon.
Cheers Rocket - Big Pete

Brother PAB - u got me humming again Bro.
Great muso's those Skyhooks. All my friends got married.....hum. hum.

That was a great tour of duty with TAD - Congrats mate on being the true, genuine chaperone/ambassador.
Look out Home and Away with The Adventures of TAD & PAB, about to make the silver screen.
Keep well mate and stay on the tracks.

No need to mention the Horror Movie

pabdul's picture

No that was at 3pm at Penrith

BigPeteBx's picture

Yeah PAB - Ego is the word in in the script.
Red Buttons had a lot to do with Skyhooks' composing.
Shirl's Neighborhood wasn't a bad show either. Pity many have to go so early. Still had talent to burn.

As I said before here, I saw Jimmy Barnes Concert on a walk through his life. He' was lucky to survive, where others have gone before him.
I take my hat off to JB, for doing what he did. He's certainly opened a can up on depression, drugs, alcoholism and how many hold it back, until it catches them out.

Keep well Champ - Big Pete

PAB - is your other stage name Quick Draw McGraw.
