Round twenty five selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

If the Tigers did win by a margin the Rabbits could potentially fall out of the top four. It's unlikely, but the Rabbits need to find some winning form, because four successive losses isn't the form you want to be in before a finals campaign. The Tigers beat the Rabbits not so long ago, but their last two games have been a loss to the Dragons and a narrow win over the Sea Eagles. Bleugh! It's time for the Rabbits to make a statement.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 14

Result – Rabbitohs 51 defeated Tigers 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Canberra Raiders – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

Ricky Stuart has lasted in the Canberra gig longer than our last four ex-Prime Ministers, and if he's still in the gig next season I expect he'll outlast a fifth. The number nines are proving the difference for these teams in season 2018. Issac Luke has found his mojo across the ditch and the Warriors are a much better team as a result, and the Raiders must wonder what might have been if Josh Hodgson had been available all season. In the last fortnight they've knocked off the Roosters and the Rabbitohs, they're the only team outside the top eight with a positive points differential and they've scored more points than any other side. What may have been. The Raiders are in 10th and whatever happens this weekend 10th is where they will stay. If two of the Panthers, Dragons or Broncos lose this weekend the Warriors can pick up a home final with a win. That's not as unlikely as it sounds. Ricky for PM? He'd make Question Time interesting.

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result – Warriors 20 defeated Raiders 16

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – AAMI Park

If the Panthers somehow won this game these two could be playing each other again in the first week of the finals. That's a pretty crappy reward for the black cats. They may prefer to hang on to their tenous grip on a home final in week one, providing they don't slip to 7th or 8th. The Storm could potentially lose the minor premiership, but I could potentially still wear the baggy green for Australia. It's not going to happen Thinker...just let it go mate. The Panthers have played at AAMI Park on seven occasions...and never won. History is against them, and they're not in the sort of form that would have you believing they could defy history on Friday night. The Minor Premiership looks settled...another trophy for the pile.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Panthers 22 defeated Storm 16

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Dragons are spending plenty of coin on Ben Hunt, and they may have to open the purse strings again and find the young half a good therapist. It looks like all the pressure and criticism is starting to get to him. Newcastle isn't the sort of crowd you want to playing in front of when you're struggling with form, particularly at an Old Boys game. Ponga is hinting he'll put the boots on for this one but he's getting around in a moon boot so it seems unlikely. In any case this is a game the Knights usually lift for, and the Dragons were seriously crap last weekend.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result – Dragons 24 defeated Knights 14

Gold Coast Titans vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

You can't get a ticket to this game, and I'm not sure if the Titans have ever put the 'Sold Out' signs up before. While it would make more sense for Thurston to play his last game at home, I'm pleased to see he'll be calling time in front of a packed house. If the Cowboys can repeat their performance from last weekend they'll win again. Scott, McLean and Taumalolo chalked up more than 600 metres of go forward against the Eels and again, a repeat of that and the Cowboys win again. Let the Thurston Festival continue.

Verdict – Cowboys by 1

Result – Cowboys 30 defeated Titans 26

Parramatta Eels vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

The Roosters appeared to be warming up when it mattered, but successive losses to the Raiders and the Broncos may have them second-guessing themselves. Dylan Napa gets to cool his destructive head for three weeks, and the Chooks will need some of their littler big men to step up and take on a little more responsibility while their biggest big man bides his time. Waerea-Hargreaves should be back this weekend, which helps. The Eels probably need to accept the wooden spoon is theirs this season – we've had a few teams disappoint us this year and the Eels are definitely one of those. What's the story Norman Corey? You need a little time to wake up wake up. Well?

Verdict – Roosters by 10

Result – Roosters 44 defeated Eels 10

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

This is probably the game of the round, because these two sides are arguably in the best form in the NRL. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five, and two of those wins were against teams in form (Warriors and Broncos), while the Sharks have won three in a row including a win over the (likely) minor premiers in Melbourne. The Sharks have a top four berth to protect and have a bunch of teams nipping at their heels, so I'm leaping to the conclusion that's motivation enough to perform. Watch for Aaron Woods off the bench...could be fireworks.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 30 defeated Bulldogs 18

Brisbane Broncos vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

Two teams have beaten the Roosters and the Rabbitohs in the last fortnight, and this is the other one. Wayne Bennett clearly knows how to put on a good barbecue because the Broncos looked down and out three weeks ago. If they were in the top four they'd be premiership favourites on current form. By the time they take to the field on Sunday the Broncos will know if a home final in week one is a possibility. Given the teams in front of them (Panthers and Dragons) appear to be free-falling it's looking likely. Meanwhile Manly are leaking points like a team with some very serious issues. Perhaps their number one club member, Tony Abbott, is in there wrecking that joint too.

Verdict – Broncos by 20

Result – Broncos 48 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Yes Manyana - well said.
One thing Steve Bradbury managed to do and that was to remain upright. GOLD GOLD GOLD!!! as the late Norman "Nuggett" May would have said. His anniversary closely approaching.
Keep well - Big Pete

Pabdul - if u r out there and away from playing trains - stick your feathers and beak in here and say a mighty hello to all.
Keep well young fella - Big Pete

Hey Mark - does this comp continue through the finals series, as I don't recall tipping the past two seasons for them (Finals).
Anything can happen I guess and changes do occur. But if Thinker is away, he might have himself primed to rest, if he hasn't programmed the respective finals rounds onto the site.
I'll keep looking in, to continue the fun, if it does.
Cheers mate - Big Pete

Hi Pete,
Thinker made the following comment on p2 Round 24 comments about the ongoing comp here -
"Last week is the final round of the regular season. Take note that this tipping comp will continue all the way through until the Grand Final. Many tipping comps do not, including the Mark Ashford tipping tipping comp here.'

As it has been such a weird season for trying to pick a winner, let the guessing games continue!!
Cheers,
Mary

Are we tipping in the finals

manyana's picture

Thanks for the extra competition Mark, it made the final rounds more interesting than we thought they could be.
Re the double post, you either need a beer or coffee!! lol.
Cheers, Manyana.

manyana's picture

Thanks BigPete, glad someone else feels the same as I do.
PS I don't usually comment on a lot of the posts, but I do read them.
Cheers, Manyana.

Mary S's picture

Yes 'a' - we are tipping to Grand Finals (according to Thinker's comments)

Mary S's picture

Now I have made a double post!!! Sorry folks!

Your suggestion on needing a beer or a coffee Manyana, sound like an excellent idea.

BigPeteBx's picture

Thanks Mary for correcting me on my thinking.
I remember now that I read that somewhere. Yes, many sites don't continue through the finals.

Our regular season work one finished, but they are starting up a $10.00 each player in. Each week during finals, you pick one team only, to win and advance. Week 1 you might pick Storm, then in Week 2 you might pick Roosters, only if your week 1 selection wins and you stay in play.
If you lose, you're out and the winners keep going until after grand final is decided. Then the winner/s collect. It keeps you thinking.

But thanks again, for pointing it out here.
Cheers and keep well - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Pleasure Manyana to be in the same grade as you.
I must also comment that Tigerholic & Tigers 717 were also part of our finishing 109 from 192.
Tigers will enjoy that final run this season, as it will keep them focused, when next season comes around. Manly and Parra will lift, but it will take some rebuilding of esteem and issues they face, to get up the ladder.
Oh well, when our 2018 NRL season has ended, I'll be devoting my time to EPL in UK concentrated efforts and watching some A-League and BBL Cricket.

Cheers and keep well - even if its an Early Grey with Mark A.
Big Pete

Hello football fans,

Apologies for any confusion, but yes we are tipping all the way through to the end of the season...including the grand final.

That mini-comp for Mark Ashford has ended though. I will touch base with Mark about the prize (thank you sir) and will then contact the winner or winners to organise payments.

Steel Panther,

My first visit to your country. At the risk of sounding like everyone else....it’s beautiful, and friendly, and safe...and the mini-thinkers are much better skiers than me but that’s okay.

No sign of Johnny Ray though...it would help if I knew what he looked like.

Heading back to Oz tomorrow in time for the finals.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Yay, a marvellous effort to come dead last out of the people who saw out the full 25 rounds and still lost to some who missed a few rounds. There's always next year.

Mary S's picture

Hi Pete,
It's all good Pete - I thought I had seen something about continuing the comp too, so had to go searching!

Your additional work comp for the finals sounds interesting - hope you do well.
Cheers,
Mary

manyana's picture

Thanks BigPete. I think that when the finals are over, I'll try & save what brain power I have for the NRL next year.
May the football Gods be looking down on us in 2019.
By the way, don't forget to get either Mark's or my, details so that we can meet up when you come to Sunny Queensland.
My housemate is a Kiwi & I've been over to NZ a couple of times.
It's a beautiful place.
Naa, not Earl grey, it's gotta be c-o-f-f-e-e.
Cheers, Manyana.

No problem Mary S. Enjoy your drink of choice.
Cheers, Manyana.

Baggy Gee, you're so right. Always next year.
Good luck with your tips for the finals.
Cheers, Manyana.

manyana's picture

BigPete, your work competition sounds like a great way to keep people interested.
Good luck to you.
Cheers, Manyana.

mark ashford's picture

Hey Baggy don't knock yourself out mate. Plenty of us had poor results this season me included. What sticks out to me is your continued support of your Eels surely more important than winning a comp.
Speaks volumes about your character. Keep well!

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete
Always lovely to hear from a gentleman like yourself.
Your question has been answered so I won't go there.
Yes it may be our friend Coach was having a sneaky comment, if so, how about a comment or two about the finals, Coach?
More important is your neck of the woods suffering from this terrible drought.
AND do you have any good news about your vision?
Manyana, her partner and I enjoy a good coffee now and then. None of that tea stuff for us mate!

BigPeteBx's picture

@Mary S
@ Manyana

Thanks for the words on our work Finals Comp.
But guess what - I wont be picking Manly in it either.
They want to have a good rethink, as it is the supporters and sponsors who get the raw deal, on what happens within clubs.

Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Manyana - I will keep that on my to do list, for crossing the Mexican Border ooops Qld. Aloe Aloe....good juice also.
I'll have a nice Kids Beer - ginger beer or red fire engine when eating out.
Not The Reg Reagan drink - KB.Then if we go to the local pub/club - I'll have a nice hops brew. No fear - a beer.

Hmmmm......I wonder what The Doggies where drinking on Mad Monday.
Cheers - Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark - Baggy stuck to his guns and kept tipping, not only his Eels but on this site. That's commitment!

Keep well - Big Pete

mark ashford's picture

Don't know if we should be talking about this but the Dogs mad Monday has hit the headlines.
1. It was a private function at a Sydney hotel.
Answer...how can you have a private function at a Sydney hotel.
2. How did Telegraph photographers get in. Or were these photos posted by other Dogs players.
Answer..looks like the pics were from iphones.
3. The Dogs players behaved abominably stripping to nude etc WHY
Answer...why would you want to take your clothes off.
4. The Dogs do have a history for this behavior.
Answer...just look at Coffs Harbour
5. Where was Coach Pay and Dogs minders.
Answer..don't you think they would have learned from the past.
NRL has said this will be looked at hard. I'll believe it when I see it.

BigPeteBx's picture

Yes Mark A - drought bad in this area. Had some good falls recently, but need heaps to fill creeks/dams and get rivers flowing.
I really feel for the farmers everywhere in this nation and I hate seeing stock lay down, then die. Poor buggers!

Thanks mate for asking about the vision. Surgeon happy with repair and healing - thus far. See him again in another 3 months. Has a clinic in P/matta and works out of Westmead as well. Top notch bloke. Loves talking sport also.

We'll work the beverages out when I arrive, but for now, need to play waiting game. First shout will be mine, as long as my passport is valid to enter.....hehehehe!!!!

Cheers and keep well - Big Pete in Bx Country (West of The Sandstone Curtain) hahahaha....
Rocket R will love to see that in print again.

BigPeteBx's picture

Mark - re Doggies Mad Monday and their past and what Manly boys did a few seasons back.
From past experiences, the theory is to lock them up and throw the key away.
This time I think they (Doggies) were down at The Rocks, in a very historic part of Sydney Cove (near Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay). Yes, they had rocks in their head, to do what they did.

NRL is again under the microscope. This time referees are at ease, as is The KFC Bunker.

Cheers and a beer mate - not with The Doggies either.
Big Pete

BigPeteBx's picture

For those concerned, or who it may concern.

The headlines you read Mark A and please excuse me all, for saying this, but I wonder how the newspapers stand would have read if the headlines went this way.
Dogs Pissed on The Rocks!!!!!!

Apologies ladies....sorry, just in humour. Sorry Thinker/Mark, if my gentleman status has just been eroded.

Big Pete

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete
Your gentleman status is intact.
Dogs relieving themselves on some rocks I leave to Dr. Harry he seems able to cope with bad doggy behavior.
You wont need a passport to come to beautiful south east Qld just take off your blue jumper and you'll be welcome.
We'll fight about who pays when you get here.

What about what Bulldogs did in 2012

Baggy_Gee's picture

The point is why do they get caught, the solution is simple, Find a very quiet place on the top of a hill, confiscate everyone's phone, and don't invite anyone who is not family of the players and coaches. So no office staff, no friends, no reporters, and no private enterprise. They did ok when they crashed ANZ until they got baited by T.V. reporters. Or straight on a plane to parts unknown just the playing group. Really that management hasn't twigged yet is incredible.
