Round twenty five selections

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Wests Tigers – Thursday night – ANZ Stadium

If the Tigers did win by a margin the Rabbits could potentially fall out of the top four. It's unlikely, but the Rabbits need to find some winning form, because four successive losses isn't the form you want to be in before a finals campaign. The Tigers beat the Rabbits not so long ago, but their last two games have been a loss to the Dragons and a narrow win over the Sea Eagles. Bleugh! It's time for the Rabbits to make a statement.

Verdict – Rabbitohs by 14

Result – Rabbitohs 51 defeated Tigers 10

New Zealand Warriors vs Canberra Raiders – Friday night – Mt Smart Stadium

Ricky Stuart has lasted in the Canberra gig longer than our last four ex-Prime Ministers, and if he's still in the gig next season I expect he'll outlast a fifth. The number nines are proving the difference for these teams in season 2018. Issac Luke has found his mojo across the ditch and the Warriors are a much better team as a result, and the Raiders must wonder what might have been if Josh Hodgson had been available all season. In the last fortnight they've knocked off the Roosters and the Rabbitohs, they're the only team outside the top eight with a positive points differential and they've scored more points than any other side. What may have been. The Raiders are in 10th and whatever happens this weekend 10th is where they will stay. If two of the Panthers, Dragons or Broncos lose this weekend the Warriors can pick up a home final with a win. That's not as unlikely as it sounds. Ricky for PM? He'd make Question Time interesting.

Verdict – Warriors by 10

Result – Warriors 20 defeated Raiders 16

Melbourne Storm vs Penrith Panthers – Friday night – AAMI Park

If the Panthers somehow won this game these two could be playing each other again in the first week of the finals. That's a pretty crappy reward for the black cats. They may prefer to hang on to their tenous grip on a home final in week one, providing they don't slip to 7th or 8th. The Storm could potentially lose the minor premiership, but I could potentially still wear the baggy green for Australia. It's not going to happen Thinker...just let it go mate. The Panthers have played at AAMI Park on seven occasions...and never won. History is against them, and they're not in the sort of form that would have you believing they could defy history on Friday night. The Minor Premiership looks settled...another trophy for the pile.

Verdict – Storm by 7

Result – Panthers 22 defeated Storm 16

Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons – Saturday afternoon – McDonald Jones Stadium

The Dragons are spending plenty of coin on Ben Hunt, and they may have to open the purse strings again and find the young half a good therapist. It looks like all the pressure and criticism is starting to get to him. Newcastle isn't the sort of crowd you want to playing in front of when you're struggling with form, particularly at an Old Boys game. Ponga is hinting he'll put the boots on for this one but he's getting around in a moon boot so it seems unlikely. In any case this is a game the Knights usually lift for, and the Dragons were seriously crap last weekend.

Verdict – Knights by 4

Result – Dragons 24 defeated Knights 14

Gold Coast Titans vs North Queensland Cowboys – Saturday night – Cbus Super Stadium

You can't get a ticket to this game, and I'm not sure if the Titans have ever put the 'Sold Out' signs up before. While it would make more sense for Thurston to play his last game at home, I'm pleased to see he'll be calling time in front of a packed house. If the Cowboys can repeat their performance from last weekend they'll win again. Scott, McLean and Taumalolo chalked up more than 600 metres of go forward against the Eels and again, a repeat of that and the Cowboys win again. Let the Thurston Festival continue.

Verdict – Cowboys by 1

Result – Cowboys 30 defeated Titans 26

Parramatta Eels vs Sydney Roosters – Saturday night – ANZ Stadium

The Roosters appeared to be warming up when it mattered, but successive losses to the Raiders and the Broncos may have them second-guessing themselves. Dylan Napa gets to cool his destructive head for three weeks, and the Chooks will need some of their littler big men to step up and take on a little more responsibility while their biggest big man bides his time. Waerea-Hargreaves should be back this weekend, which helps. The Eels probably need to accept the wooden spoon is theirs this season – we've had a few teams disappoint us this year and the Eels are definitely one of those. What's the story Norman Corey? You need a little time to wake up wake up. Well?

Verdict – Roosters by 10

Result – Roosters 44 defeated Eels 10

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Cronulla Sharks – Sunday afternoon – ANZ Stadium

This is probably the game of the round, because these two sides are arguably in the best form in the NRL. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five, and two of those wins were against teams in form (Warriors and Broncos), while the Sharks have won three in a row including a win over the (likely) minor premiers in Melbourne. The Sharks have a top four berth to protect and have a bunch of teams nipping at their heels, so I'm leaping to the conclusion that's motivation enough to perform. Watch for Aaron Woods off the bench...could be fireworks.

Verdict – Sharks by 4

Result – Sharks 30 defeated Bulldogs 18

Brisbane Broncos vs Manly Sea Eagles – Sunday afternoon – Suncorp Stadium

Two teams have beaten the Roosters and the Rabbitohs in the last fortnight, and this is the other one. Wayne Bennett clearly knows how to put on a good barbecue because the Broncos looked down and out three weeks ago. If they were in the top four they'd be premiership favourites on current form. By the time they take to the field on Sunday the Broncos will know if a home final in week one is a possibility. Given the teams in front of them (Panthers and Dragons) appear to be free-falling it's looking likely. Meanwhile Manly are leaking points like a team with some very serious issues. Perhaps their number one club member, Tony Abbott, is in there wrecking that joint too.

Verdict – Broncos by 20

Result – Broncos 48 defeated Sea Eagles 16

Wally Lewis - round twenty-five selections (in bold)

  • WARRIORS vs Raiders
  • STORM vs Panthers
  • Knights vs DRAGONS

A couple Tigers players talked about playing for pride tonight, I think they forgot to tell the rest of the team. Got off to a good start and I thought we had a chance of the win. Really guttered with the end result.
Hoping we can continue building and get a place in the 8 next year.

NuL1F3's picture

What an upset! :O

BigPeteBx's picture

Hello Mary.
Its the Pabdul brotherly love here. I recall the "young fella" did the same last year. I hadn't even heard a whimper from him. I think I remember him saying something like, "he had no chance of winning it, so he let the others play it out" - or along those lines.

That's the kindness in Brother Pabdul, of which TAD already has experienced.

@Pabdul - I'll be out your way in January 2019, to see Phil Collins Concert at Qudos. Secured me tickets yesterday.

Cheers all and have great final round of NRL and weekend to boot.
Keep well - Big Pete

Tuisova's picture

It's looking like the storm are resting the whole squad.

Happy with their 2nd place.

christine 's picture

I'm changing one of my tips to Penrith instead of storm but apart from taking Penrith instead of storm the rest of my tips are the same as the thinker's ...

mark ashford's picture

Tuisova
Makes it hard for us tipsters when Coaches rest players in the last round. Bellamy is a wily old coach who will do the best for his team with finals starting next week. I'm sure Storm would like the minor premiership but the following weeks are what counts.

mark ashford's picture

Big Pete
Like others here I miss Padbul's comments. He has a great sense of humour. Like a lot of us we have no chance of winning so he is welcome to stop tipping BUT we miss his comments.
C'mon Paddy a few more "gems" before seasons end.

Tuisova's picture

NRL obviously want another Storm minor premiership.
The calls have been absurd and idiotic , the yellow card is a shame.

Steel Panther's picture

Both sin binnings deserved in my opinion. Penrith totally undisciplined yet only 4 points in it at half time.

TigerGirl's picture

Thinker just wanted to make sure that you saw my post regarding my tips for this week.
West Tigers til I die.

mark ashford's picture

Tuisova
Why would the NRL want another Storm minor premiership?
Penrith have been so undisciplined they deserved the penalties and the send offs. James Maloney is an idiot giving penalties away like lollies at a kids picnic. Drinkwaters disallowed try was a joke.
Storm without 8 regulars are doing ok.

Steel Panther's picture

Totally agree about Drinkwater's no try Mark. Bizarre ruling. He smoked Maloney one on one with no Penrith player disadvantaged from what I could see!!

mark ashford's picture

Steel,
Don't know that the best team won tonight. Storm had so many players out but Drinkwater was a stand out. Had Storm had their usual players then it was a 20 point Storm win. Panthers played well and would have been more in front if Cleary's boot had been in song.
Most importantly if the Roosters win by 26 or more then I believe they will take the minor premiership.

Mary S's picture

Agreed in regard to Drinkwater's game tonight. Shame about the disallowed try!!!

Looks like he is pretty good at directing traffic too!!!

Anonymous's picture

Tuisova I hear u brother. Same ref Bronx v Coast semi-final sham. Most corrupt officiating i’ve seen til last nite. Somehow the wrong team got up tho.

Baggy_Gee's picture

Sam Williams was just as robbed, as the Warrior got back across to cover the man running through the line, even made the tackle. Agreed Drinkwater got a dud call there, but he looks a little like Martin Lang with all that hair at speed, but the only time Martin went that fast was on the team bus.

christine 's picture

Rocket
Well done with picking Penrith over storm , i'm glad I changed my tip before the game too ...

Rick's picture

Yes well done Rocket ???? cheers.

Steel Panther's picture

Baggy I agree with you too regarding the Sam Williams no try. While there was contact with the Warriors player he was never going to make the tackle on Williams....he was too far away. Canberra were unlucky not to come away with the points. A season of what might of been for the Raiders.

mark ashford's picture

Baggy & Steel
Didn't see the Warriors/Raiders game so can't comment. With Raiders well out of contention for finals I gotta say good luck to the boys across the Tasman.
Titans are leading Cows 20/12 in another game that won't effect the finals.
Big game tonight. If Roosters give the Eels a flogging then they secure the minor premiership.

If you want to be taken seriously on this site, declare yourself and some of us, maybe just some of us will be interested in your comments

mark ashford's picture

WOW with only a few minutes to go it's Cowboys 30 Titans 20
A nice send off for JT if they hold on.

a's picture

I'm so happy for JT in his final game Cowboys will be better in 2019

mark ashford's picture

Just watching the pre-game talk on #9 and Gould has claimed the Panthers victory. "I just said go down and play some footy and you'll get the win" He failed to acknowledge the Storms missing stars or the Panthers lack of discipline in the first half blaming the refs.
Gus is a goose.

christine 's picture

Mark
What happens now with your mini comp the person I had was broncos swimmer but broncos swimmer didn't even put there tips in so please let me know what happens now , does your comp include finals ???

Mary S's picture

I was not able to watch the Cowboys/Titans game, but ecstatic to see the final score.
So glad Coop also made history, by being the first forward to score a try in 9 consecutive games.

christine 's picture

Mark
No need to answer the above ? I know the answer & thanks for running your comp it gave us something else to do ...

a's picture

Yes Mark I agree I really hope Gus Gould goes

Mary S's picture

Roosters now take minor premiership after their result to night.
They certainly ran over the top of the Eels in the second half to rack up the points.

@Brad S
Congrats on your tipping success this round. If Sharks and Broncos win tomorrow, you will have 'full house'!

Brad S's picture

Thanks Mary!
I had 6/6 a few weeks ago and then both of my Sunday tips lost. Hopefully not today. Taking my old man to watch the Broncs this afternoon so hoping they get the win!

Mary S's picture

Actually saw Wayne Bennett smile when Corey Oates got his 3rd try today!!!!

Don't see that often!

The Thinker's picture

Greetings football fans,

just a reminder that I am across the ditch and working with limited technology at the minute.

apologies if my updating of results in round 25 is delayed.

tiger girl...I saw your updated tips in the comments and will adjust.

all the best

a's picture

So Panthers and Broncos finish on the same points differential but Panthers finish above them on defence

a's picture

Do you think that's fair anyone

mark ashford's picture

Firstly Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there. Hope you had, as I did, a nice day. Lots of good food and a drink or two or three.
Sharkies got home against the Dogs and the Broncs had a 32 point win over the Sea Eagles giving them a home final against the Dragons.
The Broncs have a good record against the Dragons so I hope we can go on from there.
Good luck to anyone who still has a team in the final 8.

mark ashford's picture

Amazing ladder this year. Top 4 are on 34 points bottom 4 are on 32 points. Only for & against separating them.
Could this be the year someone from the bottom 4 wins.

Mary S's picture

Hi Brad,
Congrats on your 8/8.
Hope you and your father enjoyed the footy today - an excellent home crowd for the Broncos/Sea Eagles clash.

mark ashford's picture

"a" just had a look at the NRL site and it appears The Broncs & Panthers have ended on exactly the same for & against points both being on 32 points in the regular season. Don't know what this will mean to the playoffs.

Brad S's picture

Thanks Mary. As a Broncos supporter, it was a great game!
"a" that's really interesting. Can't remember 2 teams finishing on the same amount of points with the same points differential. Pretty happy with the outcome of playing the Dragons at home rather than the Warriors. No offence to any Dragons supports but I'm sure most would agree that their form hasn't been great of late.

Anonymous's picture

I read the tie-breaker rule is to work out the percentage for/against and Broncos have a slightly higher % than Panthers so clear as mud why they are 6th not 5th.

Anonymous's picture

sorry Panthers 112% Broncos 111%. close comp this one.

Brad S's picture

1 win is the difference between 1st and 8th. Have we ever had a closer finish to a season?

a's picture

Yeah we never have a colder finish

manyana's picture

Congratulations Brad S. Also to Rocket Ryan & the others in the top bracket. Thanks also to Steel Panther, you did a great job.
The finals should be very interesting.
Just a thought, & probably throwing the cat amongst the pigeons, but why do people enter these competitions & then drop out if they're not going to win?
Personally, I'm in for the long haul. If I win, that's great, if I lose, I've done the best I can, but I ALWAYS hang in, you never know what will happen. Look at Steven Bradbury, he hung in & won a gold medal.
Cheers to all, Manyana.

Steel Panther's picture

Thanks Manyana...close but no cigar!! Now I have to aim for the Thinker's prize as we head into the finals.

Well done Brad S on tipping a full round. You and Rocket were brave men tipping against the Storm.

Thinker...how about an update on your travels in NZ?

mark ashford's picture

Well the regular season is over and what a season it's been.
Plenty of upsets and the closest final series in memory.
The mini comp is over and providing the Thinker has updated his comp correctly we have our winners.
1st...... Rocket Ryan on 119 points.....winner.... Rick
Eq 2nd..Tiger Girl on 118 points....winner....Scott M
Eq 2nd....Brad S on 118 points....winner...Brad Apple
There is $100 on it's way to Thinker when he gives me his bank details providing he still has a bank account after taking the family to NZ.
I would suggest $50 for Rick and $25 each for Scott M & Brad Apple.
I'll leave it to the boss as to how this is paid.
Thanks to all who participated.
Don't forget Thinkers comp goes right to the grand final.

You're starting to post interesting stats and sounding a bit like our friend Coach. Only the finals to go if you would like a say?

Great Comp Folks in Thinkers Comp.
Nrl - all over the paddock this season.

Congrats Rocket - good things come peoples ways, who concentrate on tipping and not necessarily the posts made.

Steely - we need to take a swab on you mate.

But in all kindness - well done to Tiger Girl and Footy Chick, because they kept the leader-board, pretty honest throughout the season.

Scott M Sharky - I'll have some of that stuff you were on, to bolt up the ladder that late in the season. At one stage you were dwelling in the cellars, like my team. you finished to be equal with the great Mark A and I with Manyana keeping us in check.

Thinker and Thinkers Little Helper - thanks for a well run comp, as only you know how to do it. A bottler.

Yes Mark A - last week, one word had me thinking about the latest Anonymous person, we have. This round cemented my thoughts, similar to you. If it is you Coach - good to see you "slurking" around the woods, like a wildcat (Panther). Your boys are there, or made it.

Cheers everyone and keep well - Big Pete Bx
